Progress so far in bookbinding

So I've never bookbound before, but I decided to give it an ADHD go with greenTeacup's Lionheart series, a Harry Potter Rewrite focusing on Draco, wherein he is in Gryffindor and will eventually end up with Hermione (as it should be).

Had to make an account to ask her a question regarding imagry, so might as well use this Tumblr thing.

I have made Vol. I and II and II (sic) into typesets on Google Docs. The 2nd Vol. II is incomplete at this moment, but I worked what I had thus far. Total between the three Volumes is about 700k words, so they are not small, lol.

I've also started gathering material to make the books. 11x17 paper painstakingly chopped to 8 1/2x11, because I live in Hawaii and you can't get shit here without costing an arm and leg, and because every bookbinder firstly raved about ensuring the short grain for your paper.

I also couldn't find any endpaper I liked, except a single sheet from a Michaels' booklet that wouldn't ship here without an absurd shipping cost for a small item. So I made my own.

Made this in Procreate, then had OfficeDepot print and mail like 8 double sided copies to me... still with an absurd shipping cost for what they were, because Hawaii. I'm really happy with how this came out, and I ensured that the Draco constellation was included.

Then, I tried my hand at the cover arts. I have plans to make them from Heat Transfer Vinyl (DTV not HTV, for color choice), then slap it to the covers as it'd be the best option I have IMO. I made them also in Procreate, and will send it to some Esty sketchy seller to print and send to me. Plan to use Leather to bind the books, because I'm extra like that.

This one is Vol. I, gold because it'll be on red leather. I initally tried to mimic the ones provided within fic.... but then I got extra. I did keep to the image and stamp of original. Couldn't find OG script type, so something that fit IMO. I am happy with this one. The fligree is a different style per volume.

This one is the first Vol. II, so designed to be black on yellow. I might swap out the cup to something that matches the sketch style of the other images, and would likely print better. IDK. I did add some color to the filigree, as it seemed dull to be 100% black.

Lastly, thus far, is the 2nd Vol. II. I'm acting under the assumption it's supposed to be Vol. III, but we'll see. This is designed to be on top of blue, so tried to use a bronze color. I might make the owl intentionally white internal, with brown on the back, to show it's Hermione's owl. But might just leave it outline.

Each DTV would be cut to apply in the correct area, and applied. So they don't need to be 100% aligned to print. I'm debating waiting to print these until after the books are printed, so I can get an understanding of how thick the books'll be to size appropriately, but eh. I am deep in my ADHD hyperfixation, so I don't know if I can resist buying the shinies.

And that's it so far. I'll be test printing the signatures next, then validating the typeset before printing the lot. I'll try to remember to post progress pics as needed.

Just finished binding the first lion heart book! I’m hoping as I bind each one to add more and more of the hogwarts express to run across the spine. @greenerteacups

Summer always turned Hermione’s hair lighter, and this was no exception. A number of sandy gold strands laced her normal curtain of fringe, though she’d grown it out. This opening scene from Lionheart by @greenerteacups absolutely gripped me.

Chapter 57 - Summer's End His door banged open. The pretense of tranquility was punted into the doorjamb. She leapt into him — into was the right word, socked right into his stomach, nearly bowled him over — and he stumbled with her into his room, laughing. “I knew it! I knew it’d be you if they went by marks, I only worried she might choose Harry for preference! No offense, obviously.”

I was about to make a whole background but then the song Stupid Cupid plays when I'm coloring and my whole mood change to how Draco probably feel when Hermione leapt into him, hence the pink ♥ this is a Lionheart fanpage.

“You don’t have to say that to make me feel better, by the way,” she said, feigning indifference. She wasn’t good at it. She spoke with her hands, and they were too honest; they were already trying to wring themselves for the mistruth. “I can take it. I’m tough.”

“Hermione Granger.” He wondered if it sounded too fond. It was worrisomely close.

She stopped.

“If they cut you open, and withdrew a fragment of a particle of marrow — if they drew a single drop of your heartsblood, and laid it together with one cell of your gray matter — if all that remained of you was a constellation of particles, in other words, you profoundly intransigent idiot — the distilled essence of you, your vanishing remainder, would still hold more goodness in it than this school has under its roof without you.”

She rested her head against the mantle and looked at him frankly for a moment, like she’d never seen him before. He discovered that it was pleasant to say the things that he believed. What a terrible shock.

“So for God’s sake, pull yourself together,” he said.

She laughed with less humor than surprise. Her eyes were shining.

“Sometimes I used to think I imagined you,” she said.

He’d imagined she might come back at him with some sort of equivalently nice or affectionate thing, so this was moderately disappointing. He was brave about it, however.

“That must have been depressing.”

Typesettings done!

Finally, the typesettings for Volume I and Volume II (Book 4) are done! Vol. II Book 5 is as done as it can be before @greenerteacups finishes the volume. I think she estimated another nine chapters, but we'll find out. I'll update and post when avail.

The program I used, Bookbinder.js, unfortunately does not make one PDF--it makes a PDF for each signature, starting count at 0... for reasons. I spent probably an hour trying to combine the files into one cohesive unit, but with 38 signatures for the first volume and 39 for the second, and each PDF didn't seem to want to combine in the right place when I tried, and it was such a PITA to check to see if they were added right as nothing is in numerical order--eh. Someone else can do that if they want the suffering. Or have Adobe pro, which would make it far easier.

I did add some blank pages/title pages/Table of Contents to the actual writing, so it looks pretty professional IMO. I have it set to that, when you're attaching the end papers, you would have a blank page before the title page built into the signature. Therefore, the first "page" will be blank when printing, then the title page, posting info, etc. Each signature is set to be 4 physical pages.

I also used BookletCreator, which thankfully does make one PDF, to provide a copy with wider margins for those who want it.

As today is Friday, I'll be able to print in the morning, fold and press, and then begin stitching. I am happy to share these typesettings. Please be aware, I have made some minor edits. Specifically, I went through and tried to catch any unintentional typo (e.g. misspelled name) or formatting issue (e.g. additional space between sentence and quotation mark) I saw. Notably, I also changed letters into handwriting styles. This may not be everyone's cup of tea, so just an FYI before you use.

This is the 'what if Draco had been sorted into Gryffindor' fic, and it's a masterpiece. The writing sings, the characters all have distinct voices and get to shine, the world feels so alive you forget you're reading a fic, it's just perfect.

Snarriet with pregnant Harriet! I'm so, so happy to see danpuff writing Snarriet. Her Snape is caustic and angry and angsty, and he also loves Harriet with all his heart. The way their relationship is depicted is so good. Plus hot smut, and all the feels that come with Harriet's pregnancy!

Day 10: a fest/event fic

Leak by amassy (Harry/Snape, E, 4k)

Hot plumber Harry is called in to help with Snape's leak. He thoroughly investigates the problem... and plumbs Snape's arse. A fun, smutty little fic that I adore!

Day 11: an underrated fic

Lupin's Cat by harbingerfrost (Hermione/Remus, M, 7k, WIP)

A cute fic where Hermione bonds with Remus while in her cat Animagus form. The soft side of Remus is well-depicted. A fic full of soft feels!

Day 12: A fic from your favorite author

From Graves Somewhere by evejenson (No pairing, M, 2k, WIP)

The prequel to Certain Dark Things by the same author. We get to see a young Snape on his first day as a teacher, and it's fascinating.

Day 13: a rare pair

Scylla and Charybdis by @saintsenara (Snape/Voldemort, E, 55k, WIP)

Snapemort, my beloved. It's a pairing that by nature will be angsty and tragic and self-destructive, and here the author distills it to its purest essence and serves us a feast. The writing is sharp and incisive, exploring Snape's guilt, his desire, his hatred of himself. The political machinations are deftly rendered, and there's a intertwining of past and present that's used masterfully to deliver blows to the reader or produce dramatic irony while highlighting the tragedy of it all.

Day 14: a fic rated T

Dudley "Capability" Dursley by Coconutice22 (Harry/Snape, Dudley/Neville, T, 9k)

Snarry through the eyes of Dudley while he himself is falling in love with Neville. It's fun and fluffly and I love Dudley's POV here!
