Explosions of residential buildings in Russia in September 1999
25 years ago, Russia was shaken by a series of terrorist attacks. Several apartment buildings were blown up with explosives planted in basements: in Buinaksk, two in Moscow and in Volgodonsk. As a result of the terrorist attacks, 307 people were killed, more than 1,700 people were injured of varying severity or suffered in one way or another. These crimes, sponsored by one of the main Chechen terrorists, Amir ibn al-Khattab, were supposed to be the revenge of Chechen militants for the failed invasion of Dagestan, but eventually served as arguments for the start of the second Chechen war.
Buinaksk (Dagestan), September 4, 64 people were killed and 146 injured
At the end of August, terrorists drove a KAMAZ truck from a Chechen village to the city. There were five tons of explosives in the back of the truck, disguised with bags of sugar. Knowing that due to the tense situation in the North Caucasus, locals would be on their guard, the terrorists began to prepare for crimes in advance. One of them pretended to be a watermelon merchant and took up a position in the courtyard of a five-story building, where most of the families of officers of the 136th Motorized Rifle brigade lived.
The attackers' plan worked: the residents of the house were used to seeing GAZ-52 with watermelons in their yard and on the evening of September 4 didn't pay attention to it. No one knew that there were 2.7 tons of explosives in the back of the car. That evening, many officers were delayed on duty because of an important meeting - and therefore there were mostly women and children in the apartments. When the clock showed 21:45, there was an explosion.
Two entrances of the building, each of which contained 15 apartments, turned into ruins. There was a huge hole in the middle of the house. The house was torn out in the middle, destroyed along the slabs.
Moscow, September 8, 106 people were killed and 690 injured
Most of the 14 tons of explosives for the crimes were manufactured at the mineral fertilizer plant in Urus-Martan, and then packaged in sugar bags. Under the guise of the CEO of the company, the leader of the attack rented a place for "sugar" in the warehouse. To lull the vigilance of the residents, a couple of days before the delivery of the deadly cargo from the warehouse, promoters hired by terrorists walked through the apartments of the house. They claimed that the sugar trade was about to begin on the ground floor of the house.
On September 8 at 23:59 an explosion broke out. It simultaneously brought down two central entrances of building, visually dividing the house into two parts. This crime came as a surprise not only to people, but also to the special services. No one expected that residential buildings would become the target of terrorists.
The explosion sowed panic among Moscow citizens: people were afraid to spend the night in their apartments, so sometimes they even bought tents and sleep in parks.
Moscow, September 13, 124 people were killed and 2 injured
In the story of this terrorist attack, it is striking that explosives packed in sugar bags were discovered in advance. However, the district police officer who checked the premises of the furniture store didn't understand what he was facing.
On September 13, at about 05:00, bomb activated, bringing down the entire single-entrance house. About 700 rescuers quickly began working at the scene of the tragedy, who dismantled the rubble manually in search of survivors.
"I felt like I was flying for a long time, then I fell, and this fall woke me up. I was still flying and sleeping. Then I came to my senses. Dust, sand is flying. I sat on this pile of rubble for about seven minutes and wanted to hear at least someone shout. It's like in a war: silence, dust is falling, and no one even moves, it's quiet, there's no sound, no breathing. Dead silence." survivor of a terrorist attack.
Volgodonsk (Rostov region), September 16, 19 people were killed and 89 injured
The terrorists left a KAMAZ truck with dangerous cargo at a carpool in the nearby village and on the same day agreed to buy a GAZ-53 truck from Abbaskuli Iskenderov, allegedly to deliver potatoes around the city. Then, at the request of the "buyers", Iskender parked GAZ-53 at a nine-story apartment building. At five in the morning there was a terrible explosion.
The facade and stairwells of building were severely damaged, the floors partially collapsed — but the building stood due to a special earthquake-resistant structure. Nevertheless, an explosive wave of monstrous power within a radius of two blocks from the explosion hit 37 residential buildings, two schools, a kindergarten and a police building.

since bruharvey seems to be rising again (I've been a fan since 2014) id like to see a drabble with sugar baby/trophy husband bruce pls. preferably with baby batkids who adore harvey, just like bruce, and hate when he has to leave for work. even if harveys like, who's gonna spoil you little brats if I don't go
Harvey knows he shouldn't, not really. But he had actually managed to get through all his accumulated telework time and was obliged to go to his office for at least three weeks at a time… face-to-face.
It's not that he hated working from home, in fact, if he can feel pretentious, he likes working from there.
He loves having to just wear his coats and shirt, because he can wear his pyjama bottoms and be comfortable there for the hours he works.
He finishes as early as possible and then spends time with his husband and all their beautiful children.
But the pandemic is definitely over now, and he himself can't deny that going back to the office gives a different touch to his work. Not to mention that there are meetings that are better handled in person. Even more so if his gorgeous husband refuses to attend his own company's meetings and it's up to him to ask the Wayne Corp representative what to do and what not to do.
But Harvey is getting sidetracked.
What was important now was the following.
Harvey is an adult, an adult with his own money… and traditionally speaking (within 50's thinking, of course) he is the man of the house.
And as such, he shouldn't have to hide in order to leave for work and be on time, right? Right? Right?
…. Well, he doesn't.
Harvey now finds himself in a terribly incriminating position. He's about to leave the mansion, he only has to take 5 more steps if he wants to get to his office in time and in 30 minutes he can get on with the work he needs to do.
The impediment?
Well, it depends a bit on everyone in the mansion.
If his husband, first of all, doesn't want to monopolise him like an octopus. When he has to take advantage of the fact that his husband is still half asleep, he manages to escape by giving him cuddles and kisses all over his face. After that, he has to make sure that his husband is nice and warm between the sheets.
Then along comes his first child, Dick. Who won't hesitate to hang on to him like a little monkey, trying to show him how he does the pirouettes and jumps all over the furniture in the place, and then call Jason. Jumping like a kangaroo on his little brother's cot bed.
Jason, who is not really a morning child, would be crying inconsolably because Dick would throw himself on him in his cot-bed. (That's when he takes advantage of the fact that Bruce isn't a morning person either and makes his second son into a teddy bear so they can both fall asleep together).
Now that Jason and Bruce are out of the waking zone, he takes advantage of the fact that Dick is still a little jealous of his younger brother and, by the way, casually mentions that Bruce still has his other arm free. Which will quickly make his eldest son go and want to hog his sleeping father.
One husband, and two sons away.
He must take care of his other 2 children.
Tim, his little Timbo. With him it's a bit curious, the infant wakes up almost at the same time as him and only goes to sleep when he is back home. Basically, screwing up his sleep schedule. So, what Harvey has to do every day is simply leave the mansion in his pyjamas, because when Tim notices from his cot that he's still wearing pyjamas, it gives him the feeling that he's just hanging around the mansion before he goes back to Bruce in his bedroom.
Does it work? Most of the time, he just thanks the newspaper service endlessly, who seem to read his need and call to tell him that "there was a delivery failure". Nothing crazy.
"Dad's just going to pick up the paper Timbers, why don't you see if Damian isn't bothered by your big brother? You know how upset he gets if he's woken up before breakfast."
And now… for Harvey's biggest challenge… his only missing son.
Damian. The barely one-year-old baby.
Damian, to his and his husband's misfortune… was like Coraline's evil kitten.
He used to show up whenever and wherever you least expected him to. It doesn't matter if he has the monitor on, or if they put a little balloon on his custom-made onesies, when you least expect it Damian will be there crawling around or demanding (not asking for) total devotion.
He loves all his children equally, but Damian seems to have quickly outgrown the Baba Bruce stage and is now terribly obsessed with being pampered and cared for exclusively by him.
And therein lies the detail. Damian is learning to walk in a running manner. And that has made him unstoppable. So now he finds himself in that awkward situation.
Before, when he got past Tim, Harvey could run up the driveway and go to work. Now? No way.
Because along comes Tim, now awake for good, carrying an annoyed Damian… both of them looking at him with their big baby eyes, waiting to see if he's really going to walk out the door.
It is in a difficult situation. If Damian starts crying, Tim will cry out of sympathy. Which will make Jason wake up and cry because they won't let him sleep.
Which will allow Dick to wake up trying to calm his other brother down, but knowing him that will lead to Bruce waking up and making all his kids and his husband also notice he's going to work.
His briefcase from the office is already on the trolley, his suit and freshly pressed tie are there too. Everything was ready.
"Baba"
Oh Fuck.
"Baba, bed, baba bed."
"Oh habibi, you know you should be in your cot, it's not time for breakfast" he still has time, he woke up extremely early today, and the office is not due for another hour. He can get Damian to sleep and get Tim to join him.
"Baba No!" and Damina's crying was what caused the chaos.
Tim quickly began to cry and demand to be held too. And though he tried, even daring to give them that terrible binky he was so insistent on taking away, he had already wasted too much time.
His husband, his beautiful husband, was now coming into his sight. Bruce was clearly upset holding a sobbing Jason, and another clearly upset Richard.
"Where do you think you're going?" she hears Bruce ask, "I thought you were staying all day."
"I got a call and something happened at the office, I need to check it out."
"Going in your pyjamas? How urgent is it?"
"Yes, it is."
"But daddy always goes out in his pajamas daddy" says Tim... and well, if Harvey survives this moment, he might consider cutting Tim out of his will... or not buying him anything on his next trip to Disney. The point is that Tim has really left him in his grave.
He knows he'll regret it if he doesn't get out in time. But, if he wins at least 4 cases today, maybe, maybe Bruce and the kids will forgive him for what he's about to do. He'll make it up to them later.
"Honey, I adore you with all my being, but I really must get to the office" and before Bruce can even say anything, he quickly leaves Damian and Tim in his arms and runs the few steps he has to the front door. He starts the car like a fiend and gets to his office as soon as possible.
Bruce threatened to divorce him for leaving him and the kids? Yep.
Did he calm down when I tried to explain to him that spoiling them meant having to go to work a couple of days at the office? Not at all, he even threatened him and the whole office to be bought out by Wayne Corp.
Did he calm down when he promised them a compensatory family day at Disney Paris when he finishes his days in the office? Maybe a little.
Did he definitely calm down when he told them they could have a romantic dinner at that new restaurant in the historic city centre? Yep. That's when he did calm down.
Although, Harvey couldn't say no when his husband and kids showed up at noon, demanding to spend their lunch with him.

TOO TIRED TUESDAY
Yesterday was a frustrating day. I tried giving money to a small regional furniture chain based in Salt Lake City for mom's washer and dryer. They don't make it easy, and the woman I dealt with on the phone made it even harder.
And I'm still going to have to go through this with other companies. Hopefully they won't be as frustrating. Sigh.
Everyone in this small town gets their mail at the post office, they don't have home delivery. I ran out to pick up the mail and when I came back the geriatric pug had peed on the floor.
She had been much better the past couple of weeks but she has had a little regression. This morning she had a deposit of pug poo waiting for me too. Sigh.
Speaking of frustrating: The head of the secret service just resigned after frustrating and stonewalling congress yesterday. I doubt most of you watched her testimony, but it mostly involved her saying "I don't have that information," or "I can't answer that until the investigations are concluded."
She was almost as frustrating as the lady from the small regional furniture chain based in Salt Lake City.
Now if you'll excuse me it's a new day and new chances to get bogged down in frustrating adventures.
I love you, baby. Thank you for getting me through the day. MWAH!
Y'all have a great day.

2024-09-23: Episode 23 (Let Freedom Ring)
Original airdate December 2, 1992
Episode Synopsis
Because of the gang's activities to secure a better world, they are invited to tour the White House and meet the President. This episode was created before the presidential election of 1992, so the animators opted to have the character of "Mr. President" appear like a caricature amalgamation of George H. W. Bush and Bill Clinton to allow the episode to appear less dated in reruns. While the gang is touring the White House, comrade Vladimir Polutov (Ep. 08) sneaks into the area via a convoy of delivery trucks. Pulotov and his cronies immediately take over the White House and turn it into the Red House (because Communism). Mr. President gets kidnapped by Pulotov's goons in the scuffle. Can the gang fight off this Soviet threat and rescue the President before the Soviets get their hands on the codes to the nukes? A Presidential Medal of Freedom is waiting for those who succeed!
Episode Sponsor: KidSkidz
Plastic furniture sliders have often been used like makeshift skates for kids on carpet. However, they didn't allow for extended slides. That's where KidSkidz shines. Using omnidirectional ball bearing technology fitted to a slip-on shoe platform, almost any floor can be transformed into an "ice rink"! The product worked best on non-carpeted floors, though it functioned similarly to furniture slides on carpet. It didn't have built-in brakes because it left the toes exposed to propel forward and stop.
Notable Episode Feature: The Eagle Has Fallen (Encounter)
At the climax of the episode, Polutov has Mr. President chained to a chair in the Oval Office, and Polutov is demanding the nuclear codes. All the curtains in the office are now red and gold to represent the Soviet coup. Mr. President hasn't given up the codes yet, despite looking pretty beaten up. But then a handful of Polutov's armed goons enter with a secret service official in their custody. The codes are stored in a briefcase handcuffed to the secret service official's wrist. All seems lost, but you never know what the fish folk can do to turn the situation around!

its that time of year again
To all the new undergrads out there, here are the best ways I found to save money without completely sucking all the joy out of life, from a current grad student :) (a lot of this advice is usamerican-centric for students that live on/very close to campus because that was my undergrad experience)
Advice under the cut because I wrote too much:
School stuff:
Don't buy the textbooks from the bookstore. Especially don't buy them new. Rent them from Chegg or Amazon, or straight up pirate them from the internet. (I am a huge advocate for textbook piracy)
You can also see if your school has a textbook swap. You can try to start a textbook swap, or coordinate with friends about swapping books if you take the same classes at different times. Maybe talk to your RA about organizing one for your dorm floor/building.
Apple, HP, and Dell all have educational discount programs, if you need a computer with a little more oomph than a Chromebook or a ThinkPad. (I also highly recommend getting anything BUT a chromebook, but I know that's not always in the cards). DON'T get an Apple computer if you are a STEM major. It will cause more headaches than it's worth.
Take advantage of the bus pass your college tuition comes with. Go places. It's not as fast as an uber but it's a hell of a lot cheaper and you've already paid for it. Consider using this service instead of keeping a car on campus, too! Parking passes are also usually pricey.
Some regions have services like ZipCar where you can rent a car by the hour. Universities where this is available often have a deal to make it more accessible to students. (Use this when the bus isn't an option! It's usually also way cheaper than an Uber, and you can get different sized cars for different needs!)
If you get sick/hurt (of the non-emergent variety) badly enough to warrant a doctor visit: try visiting your campus health center first! Students usually get a free visit or two per semester/quarter.
Your student health center will often have free safe sex supplies. Sometimes they have the good stuff. They really don't care how often you come in and dig through the condom bowl. My campus had a monthly delivery service you could sign up for (for free). I've managed to get free condoms, lube, dental dams, and gloves this way. (This is a very cheap way to figure out what lube and condoms you like and hate, btw)
Don't say no to ANY of the free stuff. Take all the t-shirts, stickers, pens, mugs, markers, discount codes, reusable shopping bags, temporary tattoos, snacks, and cheap sunglasses they're willing to give you. Even if you won't use it yourself, it all makes excellent branded merchandise for the people in your life supporting you. You can even save on gifts during holidays by passing some of this stuff off to people who will use it. (I was given a free pair of sunglasses in my freshman year that I still use—7 years later—in situations where I don't want to lose/damage my better ones).
Smaller businesses close to campus will probably have a student discount. Ask. It'll probably be less than 20% but take what you can get, because it adds up.
Often your college will have some amount of free software for you to use while you're a student. Typically Microsoft Office, but sometimes others. I've gotten access to Photoshop, ArcGIS, MATLAB, JMP Pro, and a few others this way. (Piracy is an option here, but it's more challenging because these things are more closely guarded.)
Sometimes at the end of the year, people moving out will just leave the furniture they don't want anymore outside. I don't recommend doing this, because someone has to clean it up but take advantage of it when it happens if you see something you want.
Steal food from the dining hall (if it's the buffet kind). Some places you have to be more sneaky about it, but some places you don't. My bestie used to straight up bring in two half-gallon jugs and fill one from the dining hall milk dispenser and the other with lemonade once a week or so and nobody ever stopped her or said anything. Generally dining halls are staffed by students that don't get paid enough to care that it's your fourth stop by the pizza station and you can't possibly have eaten that much pizza in the last thirty minutes. (Bring tupperware in your backpack. If they don't allow backpacks, napkins in a sweatshirt front pocket also work (transfer to tupperware once you get your bag back)
IF YOU QUALIFY FOR WORK STUDY: do it! The WS jobs generally pay better because half the wage comes from the government and half comes from the person who hired you (makes it easier to pay you more because they don't even have to budget for a minimum wage employee).
Activities:
Go to the activities put on by the dorms and various student groups. I promise you'll have more fun than you think, and they're usually free to very inexpensive. Get a free succulent. Make friendship bracelets and cute soap. Watch a free movie. Go on that kayak tour. See a sports game for a team you don't care about. This is an excellent way to supplement your work-life balance and you might make a friend.
Share streaming service passwords/costs with friends or roommates. If everyone in the friend group comes in with one, you can have the whole shebang for a fraction of the cost. Alternatively, split the cost of one or two that you rotate between every few months (in my experience, this works best seasonally: Autumn is Netflix and Hulu, Winter is HBO and Disney+ etc) Piracy is also an option here as well.
Try to make most of your fun beverages on your own at home. Limit the starbucks coffee or boba to once or twice a week. Take the $15-30/week you saved by not buying starbucks everyday and go to the movies or something. Save up for a camping trip with friends. Idk. I spend $12/every six weeks-ish on the costco-sized container of the coffee I like and that's roughly the same price as two medium lattes. I like having that money for other stuff.
If you have metered internet: do all your big downloads on the free campus network.
Support your on campus artists by going to shows, showings, exhibits, and galleries. They're often a very inexpensive way to see art.
Like reading for fun? Check out your local library. They have the books, but also movies and games. Some libraries have a Library of Things where you can borrow like. Baking pans or a lawn mower. The city library is guaranteed to be quieter than the university libraries, if that's your thing. You also probably won't have to trip a basketball player to beat them to the last available table during finals week.
If you're going on hikes that are less than 10 miles round trip, I'd argue that you really don't need much in the way of specialized equipment* (especially if you have cell service the whole time (for maps/GPS)), which makes it very inexpensive if you already have a couple water bottles, snacks, comfortable shoes, and a backpack. *See the great outdoors section for more recommendations
Live somewhere like Alaska? Like outside? Find someone who knows what they're doing and go foraging. It's very important you bring an expert the first few times ESPECIALLY if you live in an area where you could be ingesting poisonous mushrooms or berries. My roommate and I love going on berry picking hikes.
Like hiking but don't like hiking alone? Join an on-campus club OR a meet-up group. This is an excellent way to make friends (and find a few hiking buddies)
Regal movie theatre is the most expensive. If you have a different one in your area your tickets will likely be a few bucks cheaper. (we only have regal where I am and I am angry)
General shopping:
My personal philosophy is if I don't need it immediately, I don't buy it unless it's on sale.
Get a credit card or two with decent cashback rewards. DO NOT SPEND ANY MONEY YOU CANNOT IMMEDIATELY PAY OFF (this will avoid interest charges AND build your credit score, which will be important later on for things like renting an apartment, buying a car from a dealership, or buying a house). Use the card(s) for all your expenses. Cashback will add up pretty slowly, but it will add up. Discover It is pretty good for students and comes with a quarterly rotation of different things that get higher cash back. Apple Card has good cashback ONLY if you're using actual Apple Pay instead of the physical card (which is harder in less urban areas where cardreaders haven't been recently updated).
Make a throwaway email and sign up for stamp cards, loyalty programs, and rewards programs everywhere you shop (new email is so you don't have to be spammed with all the junk they send you but you can still access the coupons when you want them). Don't sign up for the ones with the credit cards unless they have good cashback (> 1-2%) for places that aren't their store. The Fred Meyer program slaps because it gives you gas discounts. I am currently paying less than $3.00/gallon (current cost in my area is ~$4.30/gallon). Fred Meyer is a Kroger brand, so if you don't have Freds but do have a different Kroger thing, see what they've got.
Check thrift/consignment stores and yard/garage/estate sales for things that you don't necessarily need to be in the nicest condition. Suitcases, dishes for that camping trip, a mat for outside your front door. Be really careful with soft furniture (it could be hosting bugs; if it's from a yard sale, ask the owner where it was stored before the sale. Items in the garage or a storage unit or outside should be extra scrutinized) and give everything you can a good wash/scrub down before letting it live in your house.
Estate sales are fantastic for furnishing an apartment. Usually an estate sale is done when (old) people die and the family wants help getting rid of the stuff they don't want for themselves. Currently, old people generally have very well made, solid wood furniture. It will go for much cheaper than it's actually worth if you buy it at an estate sale (rather than at an antique store). A lot of the time the furniture even matches. They'll also have things like vacuums, kitchen stuff, and maybe garage stuff.
TJ Maxx, Ross, and Homegoods (et cetra) are good for finding inexpensive clothes or home items.
Back to school sales are great for just about everything. Lots of big stuff like good furniture and electronics go on sale for things like labor/memorial day.
Don't buy a mattress just because it's the cheapest one. Buy one you actually like. Buy sheets and pillows you actually like. Having a good night's rest in a bed you are comfortable in is invaluable. It will make the rest of college way less bad I promise.
See if you can repair something before buying a new one. At best, you fix it. At worst, it continues to not work. I was gifted a pair of bose noise cancelling headphones that I use often enough that I've had to replace the foam over-ear pads 3 times and the aux cable once. This has cost me about $40 over 7 years instead of the ~$300 getting a new pair would cost. Replacement parts and patch kits are where it's at.
Some insurance companies give discounts for good grades. Take advantage of that.
Check Buy Nothing groups. I've never done this but I've heard good things.
Some car companies give a small discount to recent graduates who are buying a new car. (I did this, it was only $500.)
IF YOU HAVE THE MONEY TO DO SO!!!! Buy something that is going to last over something that is cheap. You will save money in the long run if you can pay the upfront cost.
IF YOU HAVE THE MONEY TO DO SO!!!! (and the space for storage of the larger package) Buy in bulk. Unit price is always cheaper and one large package is generally wrapped in less packaging than the same amount in many smaller packages (save the earth!)
Keep track of warranties and register products for them if necessary. If something breaks and it's still covered under the warranty, the company may be obligated to replace it (depends on how it broke). Shoot your shot! If you're really lucky, the warranty period will start over with the arrival of the replacement, and if the replacement breaks within the warranty period, it will also be eligible for replacement. (I've managed to take advantage of this on multiple occasions and have saved probably $600 this way.)
The Great Outdoors:
Need to buy seasonal equipment (like snow gear or swimsuits)? Wait until the end of the current season. Prices will drop as stores attempt to clear inventory for the upcoming season's stuff. Buy your kayak and bikini in October or November and your heavy winter jacket and ski goggles in March. Keep an eye out for the sales beginning in the weeks prior if you are a common size, as those will sell out first).
I really recommend getting an REI membership. It's a one-time cost ($30??) that opens up the used website, the garage sale, and extra bonuses like random coupons, member only sale prices, discounts on gear rental and classes, a wider window for returns/exchanges, and free US shipping (I live in Alaska and the free shipping makes this one of the best deals I can get). It will pay for itself probably within your first purchase.
Consider buying open box, but make sure all the parts are there.
Keep an eye on warranties and register products for them when necessary. Trust me, given how expensive outdoor stuff is, it's entirely worth it. Keep receipts, packing slips, and tags if you can as proof of purchase.
On campus clubs for your activity of choice. Make friends, get to go cool(er) places possibly for free/cheap.
Trying a new activity? Rent/borrow some gear to do it a few times before committing to purchasing your own. This will ensure you don't spend hundreds of dollars just to find you hate backpacking. REI has a good gear rental program and a plethora of classes, and your campus may have an outdoor equipment rental option. They may also have lessons or classes you can take about your new activity so you can learn to do it safely. I learned how to ice climb this way in March, and am going to take advantage of my current university's free gear rental and free ice climbing tower until I feel comfortable enough to go out into the wild and do it on my own.
Decided you like your new activity? Check these places (none of this is sponsored lmao I just like outside and have personal experience with all these sites):
Geartrade: Discounted new* and used gear in a variety of conditions. Definitely read all the fine print here. *Geartrade sells things sometimes that are brand new but had some packaging defect; these things are usually half off.
REI ReSupply: Used gear in a variety of conditions. Defects are detailed in product descriptions. Even things in excellent condition are usually at least half off the original price.
Sierra(dot)com: brand new stuff from well-known brands at a fraction of the price. It's usually past-season overstock, but it's all perfectly serviceable and the differences between this season and last season's gear is usually negligible. They have sales and clearance as well. Get what you want/need even cheaper if you have time to wait for it to be further discounted.
Costco sometimes has pretty good outdoor gear. I personally know that the bear spray here is NOT a good deal (it's a two-pack, but the can volume/spray-time is smaller than the two-pack at REI and they go for the same price) but their trekking poles are good and I really like their men's merino wool socks. I've heard from reputable sources that the costco snow-shoes suck. Definitely read reviews before committing here.
Facebook marketplace/craigslist: Both can be hit or miss. You'll usually have better luck for equipment that is used for activities that can be done locally (ie. you will probably not find an abundance of skis in desert Arizona) but that's not a hard rule. DEFINITELY read the fine print here, and ask to inspect the item before you hand over any money (people usually aren't weird about this and if they are you might be being scammed). I got a new dog last year and got everything for him for under $100 (two beds, two crates, bowls, harnesses, dog sized sleeping bag for camping, lick mats, the whole shebang)
I'm sure that other people have better advice regarding things like electronics, traveling, and activities that don't fall into the category of Wandering Into The Woods, but this is what I know!

The Haunted Mortuary New Orleans
In New Orleans, graveyards makes a perfect back drop for a haunted attraction. However, The Haunted Mortuary is a bit more special than most. This attraction is set up in an actual haunted mansion. The massive three-story building was constructed in 1872 by Mary Slattery.
Her intentions was to build a home for generations of her family. Mary and her husband John had six children. Family friends Mr. and Mrs. John Kane also lived with the Slatterys. In October 1905, the house was sold to Mrs. Marie Lafontear and William Klein who maintained it until May 15, 1923. Then, it was purchased on behalf of PJ McMahon in 1928 as the future site of a grand funeral home called PJ McMahon and Sons. In 1959, an ambitious building project was launched adding a specially designed elevator, a rear garage for the discrete delivery of the dead, additional viewing rooms and offices. At its height, the building featured amenities found in only the nicest of mansions such as smoking parlors for the men, private bedrooms and apartments with separate baths for the bereaved, maid service, an on-site cook, dining facilities, chaise lounges for the ladies in their private bathrooms and private drawing rooms. The purpose was to mimic the comforts of home and rivaled all but a few of the grandest of residences of New Orleans.
PJ McMahon and Sons was a full-service funeral home. There was an autopsy room and an embalming room as well as a crematorium onsite, cold storage for the dead, casket storage, casket sales and a flower sales facility. The property was designed to anticipate and take care of every aspect of the funeral business. PJ McMahon and Sons was massively successful, performing an estimated twenty thousand funerals. On April 29th 1985, PJ McMahon and Sons merged with the Security Industrial Funeral Home Corporation. The building transferred owners a few times over the years. On March 23, 2004, EHN2 Holdings, also known as Neil Corporation which owns Aveda’s Spas purchased the mansion.
Neil Corp’s goal was to turn the ornate funeral home into a Day Spa Academy. They gutted the property due to its poor condition and the hazardous materials throughout the building. Almost everything was removed. All that was left was the wood framing, doors and the staircases of the building. In this process, the CEO of Neil Corp died by somewhat mysterious circumstances and their board decided to discontinue the project. The gutted building was listed for sale in 2004, remaining empty and abandoned for three years. During this period, Hurricane Katrina swept through in 2005. The mansion survived the storm due to being located on high ground. In July 2007, Jeff Borne, the owner of PSX Audio/Video Technologies purchased it, turning the house in to the Mortuary Haunted House that it is today.
The many souls who passed through PJ McMahon and Sons Funeral Home may never have left. A woman in white has been seen on the top floor crying for her long dead husband. A tall well-dressed man is said to appear whenever someone is disrespecting the cemeteries that surround the property. Two rambunctious ghost children, a boy and girl, have been known to play pranks on visitors. A former mortician is often seen in the basement continuing his bloody work beyond the grave. Other activity includes, footsteps, whispers, furniture moving on its own, and poltergeist activity.
