Okay, so I got the fabric, and it's prewashing now.
Only lost about 6" on Green Store Chiffon Roulette (details to follow).
And then I got home and this was in my facebook memories from two years ago: "When your ankle feels "kinda funky" at work and you get home and it PUNISHES YOU FOR EVERY TRANSGRESSION YOU HAVE DARED CONSIDER including, but not limited to, challenging someone to fight you wearing lolita dresses in a county-owned trench"
And I need to come clean about something.
While I have no doubt that this is a thing I did, I am not clear on the details. Did I challenge someone to a fight in a county-owned trench, where in the fight we were both wearing lolita dresses? Did I, while wearing a lolita dress, challenge someone to a fight in a county-owned trench? Did I, standing in a county-owned trench while wearing a lolita dress, challenge someone to a fight? All of these are possible and gosh darn it, past me, we need to be MORE SPECIFIC. It was likely me, in lolita, challenging someone to a fight in a county-owned trench. Which county-owned trench is not the question. I'm completely confident about which trench.
Anyway, Green Store Chiffon Roulette works like this. When I started working there, chiffon was a fabric that was always ripped instead of cut, because fabrics that rip will rip in a straight line exactly on the grain of the fabric. Chiffon is slippery and very difficult to cut straight, but is a plainweave and very easy to rip straight.
However, it's often wound onto the bolt at an angle, and customers did not believe the cutters when they said it was straight. I cannot being to explain how many times I unfolded the fabric to have the customer look at it and still have them complain that it was crooked while staring right at the straight, right-angle rip line. So, anyway, it then went to "ask the customer" which is stupid because giving a customer an option that they didn't know they had just makes them angry 8/10 times. The other problem is that, if you rip one end of the cut and then cut the other end, the cut will not be parallel with the rip and either the customer or the store gets shorted on fabric, which isn't accounted for. This turned into, "if it's cut you cut and if it's ripped you rip, which rapidly devloved into "if it hasn't been ripped, rip the end until it's straight, and then measure what you ripped off and write it as damaged, and you must always rip chiffon," which has now added several steps, taken a lot of time, and the customer still doesn't like what's happening. So, they said fuck it, just cut the chiffon like it's a god damn broadcloth and whatever happens is not our problem.
My specific store also has Fabric Vandal, who is a lady who wants the cutter to rip her quilt cottons. This is a service that was never offered, but someone once confused the "you can rip chiffon if it's been ripped but not if it's been cut" and told her that it can't be ripped specifically because the bolt end had already been cut.
So she started bringing in scissors, ripping the end of the bolt, hiding the fabric strip she ripped off in her purse, and then demanding that the cut counter people rip her quilt cotton. This is relevant because, at a normal store, me asking the cut counter person if they could rip my chiffon so that my cut is on the grain of the fabric is a question that might be unusual but does not inherently point to fraud. At my Green Store, all the cutters have been told that under no circumstances ever do you rip fabric, because of one abusive customer, which is why we can't have nice things. I know exactly what those training notes say, because they're in my handwriting, because I wrote them before I changed jobs. I don't like that I have to pay for offgrain fabric that I have to throw away, but I also don't like that I have to pay for the peel when I buy a banana by weight but it's just the way things work.
So, instead, we play Chiffon Roulette. You get the chiffon home, and you tear little pieces off the end until you get a rip that goes from one selvedge to the other (which is how you know it's straight on the grain). You go to the other cut end and repeat the process. The amount that you have removed, added together, is your score for the game, and it's golf scoring where low is good. 6" over two ends is pretty darn good.
My cat (not Midnight) needs like $900 of vet work so this is the last non-necessary thing I buy in the next while, so apart from this 2.883yd of green chiffon and the dollar fabric, whatever this is made with is going to be what I have. I do have a High Quality Concept Render of the dress.

which is just me turning AaTP's Gather Chiffon JSK classic into a skirt and calling it not weird.
Considering imposing a rule that all accessories to go with this project must be bought at dollar stores but that will have to wait until we have xray and ultrasounded my cat's intestines.
Today's my day off from work and I got this text:
Coworker: Are people on your blog still calling you dollar-chan? Me: I hope so Coworker: We have money fabric that just came in Me: PLEASE put it on hold for me
so. Time for 20dollarlolita-themed dress?
