Tumblr probably hate me for this one lol but I am getting a bachelors degree in business administration, but! I am also getting a minor’s specifically Alaska Native Business management where it’s regarding the 12 corporations formed in Alaska from the ANCSA deal. I am hopefully working in a native corporation so it can help benefit the native community in the area. My mom is working for one and she seems to be doing some good work there.
Also a surprisingly lot of math I had to take stats accounting and calculus 😭
#lol I know it’s a boring business degree and everyone tells me it’s basically useless#but like it’s a broad bachelors#and my scholarships cover all costs so I’m not super stressed about it#also like I’m native lol that’s why I want to do it specifically about Alaska native business#not many people know but some Alaska native corporations actually are working on helping the villages#offering a lot of benefits and culture revitalization#also I just wanted something basic and something that always is looking for work#at the very least I can always fall back on an office job#ask tag#anon ask

Speaking of, what do you, as a linguist, think should be done about a dying language? Obviously we can promote policies that convince people to learn it but we can't force them, and eventually all languages die (or I guess morph into something unrecognizable). It's a bit sad, but in the end, it's just a language. So should we just let it die? Be content with writing everything there is to know about it in a book?
It's not really a question of what "we" should do, it's a question of what the language's community wants to do. Language revitalization efforts are not something to be imposed on a community from the outside, they're something which, ideally, communities should have the option to engage with to whatever degree and in whatever ways they feel benefit them most. This may range from instituting full immersion schooling in the language, to translating texts and software for use by speakers, to simply documenting certain aspects of the language for posterity. Ever community is going to have its own needs and its own constraints—economic and cultural—and language revitalization efforts need to work within these constraints to provide for the requests of the community as maximally as possible.
It's also worth making clear that language revitalization programs, where they exist, generally only exist because the community of speakers (or the broader ethnic community around the language) has fought very hard to make them happen. Funds for this kind of thing don't just materialize out of nowhere! There's a weird assumption in this ask that speakers of endangered languages are generally disinterested in seeing their language continue, and this is... close to the polar opposite of the truth, as far as I can tell. Every actually existing language revitalization effort that I have ever encountered has been the result of tireless organizing on the part of the language community, generally in the face of stark obstacles from both within and without. Language revitalization is something people really want, and are willing to work hard to make happen.
And so the answer to your question is in fact very simple, it's really no ethical conundrum at all. Where a language community is fighting for revitalization, we (outsiders to the community) should offer help in what ways we can. Linguists should step up to do work that is useful for the revitalization effort (compiling reference works and educational materials, bringing language acquisition expertise to help develop curricula, etc.). The broader public should vote in favor of funding for relevant programs, where and when it comes up, because in the grand scheme of things this sort of stuff is not especially expensive and it means a lot to people. Companies should translate their products, especially tech products, into smaller languages—and they should employ translators from the given language community in order to do it.
Probably someone with more expertise in language revitalization could list more things or describe in more detail what specific sorts of efforts are most effective. Anyone with that kind of background is invited to do so!
I think there are also probably communities who are troubled by the decline of their language, but who aren't aware of language revitalization as a concept, or believe that their language is simply doomed to die no matter what, or so on. Probably work should be done by linguistics to make it known to these communities that language revitalization is an option, and I'm not sure how that should pan out. Again, anyone with more expertise is invited to chime in.
If a community or individual has the option to pursue revitalization and they reject it? Well, that's their prerogative. It's that simple. To impose revitalization on someone who doesn't want it would be to impose culture on another person from without, and to my eye that's inherently unjust.
It's really that simple.

Joe Ricotta gives insight on Best Places in London for Property Investment
This year, prospective homeowners in London must make several important choices, the first of which is how near to the city's center they must be. Nevertheless, the alternatives need not be constrained if the response is "extremely" addressed by "Joe" Ricotta, a real estate developer.
As crucial as the quality of the local housing stock, the variety of transportation options, and the availability of local amenities are factors like a history of excellent price growth—with capacity to expand in the future—and regeneration potential.
1: Woolwich, South-East London
Woolwich is the first place suggested by "Joe Ricotta". Five miles downstream from Canary Wharf, Woolwich is emerging as a viable alternative, with Berkeley Homes' multibillion-pound regeneration of the Woolwich Arsenal, which includes 5,000 new homes as well as bars and restaurants, revitalizing the waterfront, and Crossrail set to improve transportation links in 2021.
British Land is to create a five-acre mixed-use complex on inland Woolwich's run-down high street, while Greenwich council has offered £40 million to adapt a few historic buildings on the waterfront into arts and cultural spaces.
CBRE predicts that Woolwich will have the highest "regeneration home price growth premium" in London, at 7.6 percent each year.
The river, a lot of green space, including Oxleas Wood and Plumstead Common, made Woolwich an attractive site to invest in real estate.
2: Wembley, North-West London
Located in West London, Wembley has a lot to offer, says 'Joe' Ricotta. It is particularly well-known for hosting the England national football team and Wembley Stadium, one of the world's most iconic event sites.
Wembley is continually being renovated and has evolved into a bustling and active neighborhood with a diverse range of retail outlets. It has a posh retail mall with a theater, restaurants providing a wide range of cuisine, entertainment opportunities, and plenty of green space. Wembley has three stations and three subterranean lines, and it is approximately 12 minutes distant from Central London. Because of these attractions, young professionals are particularly drawn to the area, says Joe Ricotta.
3: Hendon, North-West London
Finally, Joe Ricotta suggested Hendon, one of the most vibrant residential areas in North London, is a wonderful neighborhood with several investment opportunities and attractions. Brent Cross, one of London's largest shopping malls, as well as the Brent Reservoir, often known as the Welsh Harp, with its 170 magnificent hectares of marshland and water, are both located here.
Hendon has a diverse spectrum of architectural styles. Modern detached residences costing several million pounds may be found on Brampton Grove, one of Hendon's most prestigious streets. Families may benefit from excellent schools, parks, and restaurants, as well as excellent infrastructure that gives quick access to the rest of London.

Community Engagement Videos for Cleveland's Revitalization Projects
Community Engagement Videos for Cleveland’s Revitalization Projects
Cleveland has been undergoing an impressive revitalization in recent years, with investments in infrastructure, housing, green spaces, and cultural initiatives bringing new life to the city. From transforming old industrial sites into vibrant urban spaces to renovating historic neighborhoods, the city's renaissance is visible everywhere. However, an essential part of this transformation is ensuring that Cleveland’s diverse communities feel involved and empowered throughout the process. Community engagement videos have emerged as a powerful tool to promote these revitalization projects, build trust, and invite residents to take part in shaping their city’s future.
In this blog, we’ll explore how community engagement videos can play a crucial role in Cleveland’s ongoing revitalization efforts, foster collaboration between stakeholders, and inspire civic pride among residents.
The Importance of Community Engagement in Revitalization
Cleveland’s revitalization efforts span a wide range of initiatives, from redeveloping neighborhoods and improving public transportation to creating more sustainable green spaces and fostering economic growth. While these projects are transformative, they must be inclusive, ensuring that the voices of residents and local communities are heard and reflected in the development plans.
Community engagement is vital because:
Increases Transparency Residents want to know how revitalization projects will impact their neighborhoods. Engagement videos provide clear, visual explanations of proposed changes, timelines, and goals, keeping the public informed about what’s happening.
Fosters Collaboration Revitalization works best when it’s a collaborative effort between city officials, developers, local businesses, and the residents themselves. Engagement videos offer a platform for stakeholders to share their perspectives, encouraging dialogue and collaboration to ensure that the needs and desires of the community are met.
Builds Trust and Inclusivity People are more likely to support projects when they feel like their opinions are valued. By sharing testimonials, interviews, and updates through video content, city officials can show residents that they’re being listened to and included in the decision-making process.
Inspires Civic Pride Cleveland’s revitalization is something that residents can be proud of. Community engagement videos help tell the story of Cleveland’s transformation, instilling a sense of pride in the city’s future and motivating more residents to get involved.
How Community Engagement Videos Can Impact Cleveland’s Revitalization
Community engagement videos are an effective way to share information, collect feedback, and rally support for revitalization projects. Here are some key ways these videos can make an impact:
Showcasing Before-and-After Transformations One of the most powerful ways to illustrate the benefits of a revitalization project is through before-and-after footage. Videos can showcase how vacant lots, old buildings, or underutilized spaces have been transformed into thriving parks, modern housing, or community centers. These visuals provide a compelling case for continued investment and encourage residents to look forward to future improvements.
Spotlighting Local Voices Community engagement videos give local residents a platform to share their stories, opinions, and hopes for the future. Including interviews with longtime residents, business owners, or community leaders adds an authentic, human element to revitalization efforts. Hearing from familiar faces helps build trust and ensures that projects reflect the desires of the people who live in the affected areas.
Explaining Project Goals and Timelines Complex urban development projects often involve multiple phases, technical jargon, and long timelines. Engagement videos help simplify these elements, breaking down complicated information into easy-to-understand visuals. Animated graphics, voiceovers, and on-site footage can explain the “why” and “how” behind a project, addressing potential concerns and keeping residents informed about the process.
Encouraging Resident Participation One of the key goals of community engagement videos is to drive participation. Whether it’s attending public meetings, submitting feedback, or volunteering in revitalization efforts, these videos can call residents to action. By clearly communicating how residents can get involved, the videos ensure that revitalization projects aren’t just happening to the community, but with the community.
Celebrating Success Stories As Cleveland’s revitalization progresses, it’s essential to celebrate the successes along the way. Videos can highlight completed projects, such as new parks, public art installations, or housing developments, demonstrating the tangible improvements being made. These celebrations of success help sustain momentum and foster ongoing support for future initiatives.
Best Practices for Creating Effective Community Engagement Videos
To create impactful community engagement videos that resonate with Cleveland residents, it’s important to focus on authenticity, clarity, and inclusivity. Here are some best practices for producing successful videos:
Keep the Community at the Center The most effective community engagement videos focus on the people, not just the projects. By featuring interviews with local residents, neighborhood leaders, and stakeholders, the videos reflect the community’s perspectives and foster a sense of ownership over the revitalization process.
Use Clear and Accessible Language It’s crucial to avoid technical jargon or overly complicated explanations in community engagement videos. The goal is to ensure that every resident, regardless of background, can easily understand the plans and how they will affect their lives. Using simple, straightforward language and visual aids like maps, timelines, and animations can make the content more accessible.
Create Multiple Formats Different segments of the community engage with content in different ways. To reach a broad audience, it’s helpful to produce videos in a variety of formats—short social media clips, longer YouTube explainers, or even livestreamed public meetings. This ensures that residents can engage with the content on the platforms they prefer.
Highlight Local Culture and History Cleveland’s revitalization efforts are rooted in the city’s rich history and unique culture. Community engagement videos can incorporate elements of local pride, such as historical landmarks, beloved neighborhoods, and cultural touchpoints. This helps strengthen the connection between residents and the revitalization projects by showing that the future is being built on the foundations of the city’s past.
Incorporate Feedback Loops Community engagement is a two-way street. Videos can encourage residents to share their thoughts and opinions, either through online surveys, public forums, or social media interactions. By incorporating feedback into future updates or project phases, the videos demonstrate that the city is responsive to community needs and is adapting based on their input.
Examples of Successful Community Engagement Videos
Across the country, community engagement videos have played a pivotal role in driving support for urban development and revitalization projects. Here are a few examples of how this tool can be used effectively:
Neighborhood Revitalization: Cities like Detroit and Pittsburgh have used video storytelling to document the transformation of historic neighborhoods. By showcasing interviews with residents who’ve seen positive changes and improvements firsthand, these videos help build excitement and confidence in the future.
Public Transportation Projects: Cities implementing new transportation systems or improving existing ones often use videos to explain route changes, construction timelines, and long-term benefits. Clear visuals, like maps and animated diagrams, help residents understand how the projects will enhance their daily commute and access to the city.
Green Space Developments: Cities expanding parks or creating new green spaces can use drone footage and before-and-after shots to demonstrate the environmental and recreational benefits of these projects. Videos that highlight how new parks improve quality of life can help build support and engagement within the community.
Conclusion: Using Video to Empower Cleveland’s Communities
As Cleveland continues to revitalize and evolve, community engagement videos provide an essential bridge between the city’s planners and its residents. By showcasing the tangible benefits of revitalization projects, amplifying local voices, and encouraging active participation, these videos can play a vital role in shaping Cleveland’s future.
With authentic storytelling, clear communication, and an inclusive approach, community engagement videos can foster stronger connections between Cleveland’s neighborhoods and the transformative projects that are reshaping the city for the better. Through these efforts, Cleveland can continue to build a future that reflects the hopes, dreams, and needs of all its residents.

The New Frontier: Garage Conversion's Influence on Living Spaces
In a culture typically consumed with obtaining a lot more, the paradox hinges on the possible wealth of unused areas within our very own homes. The field of home layout has shifted its focus from large brand-new buildings and constructions to ingenious conversions of existing, usually forgotten areas.
Throughout this undiscovered region, the most notable shift is the prevalent adjustment of garages into habitable locations, flaunting immense capacity for modification.
Rejuvenating formerly overlooked spaces holds great prospects for enhancing home environments. This technique resolves the pressing concern of minimal room, particularly in metropolitan locations where square video is at a costs.
This rising trend leads the way for homeowners to develop distinct areas that can accommodate a range of requirements-- from office to guest rooms or entertainment centers-- therefore changing formerly still edges into vivid extensions of their homes.
The influence on living spaces via garage conversions is extensive; it redefines what a house could be while cultivating a sense of belonging and area within these revitalized rooms.
Modern Living Rooms: A Concentrate On Creative Style
The introduction of innovative home style, noted by the rise in garage conversions, has considerably transformed typical space, proffering a one-of-a-kind amalgamation of capability and aesthetic appeals.
As homeowners and designers push past the conventional use garages as storage spaces, a new wave of imagination is changing these areas into multifunctional domains. By repurposing garages right into home offices, studios, guest rooms, or perhaps self-contained apartment or condos, individuals can open untapped potential and increase the general worth of their homes. This ingenious method not only makes better use of space but also infuses it with fresh utility and allure.
Furthermore, the modifications in home layout and performance reflect a more comprehensive societal trend in the direction of convenience and versatility in daily life. As individuals's work habits progress to focus on flexibility and remote jobs, there is an expanding need for dedicated individual offices within homes, which is driving the need for transformative and multi-functional space.
Homeowners are discovering that transforming their garages into practical living spaces is a perfect way to resolve altering home demands without the requirement for significant renovations. This versatile technique not only provides additional area for individual usage but also provides a possibility to generate additional income by leasing the transformed area. This fad demonstrates exactly how garage conversions are enabling people to adjust to moving socio-economic conditions while developing tailored, multi-purpose areas that advertise a sense of belonging and attachment to their homes.
Possible Benefits of Transforming Extra Locations
Unlocking the covert capacity of overlooked rooms in a home can cause substantial advantages, consisting of expanded living areas and an increase in residential property worth. This improvement hinges on the idea that every square foot has the potential to offer a function, hence taking advantage of the readily available area.
Property owners can take advantage of the possibility of their existing homes by transforming unused locations into useful areas, such as visitor bedrooms, home offices, or art studios, without the demand to buy additional real estate. This strategy not only provides versatility in conference-transforming personal requirements but also promotes resource performance. By repurposing existing spaces instead of constructing new enhancements, house owners can add to sustainability efforts by minimizing building and construction waste and preserving natural surroundings.
Garage conversions can increase a residential property's worth past its useful advantages. A properly designed improvement can be a major selling factor for prospective purchasers seeking homes with versatile spaces. These conversions are likewise cost-efficient means to raise the living area without breaking the financial institution, and they frequently do not call for extensive construction or zoning permits, making the renovation procedure less turbulent.
By repurposing garages, house owners can tap into hidden possibilities and develop distinct living locations that straighten with their individual preferences and demands, ultimately cultivating a feeling of belonging.

Singapore Airlines as the inspiration for the future of the T
Since beginning operations in 1972, Singapore Airlines' goal was to provide superior customer service, becoming the preeminent airline for many years because of it.
In contrast, the Boston T, the public transportation system throughout Boston run by the MBTA has much of the opposite issue, associated with subpar customer service and experiences marked with delayed trains and frustration. But, by taking a few key customer service lessons from Singapore Airlines (SIA), the T can soon be on a path of competitive advantage through customer experience.
Taking inspiration from SIA, the MBTA can start focusing on developing a customer service culture. The first step is to hire people with good communication skills who are excited to be there. This is often easier said than done. MBTA may need to increase compensation and benefits to make the job competitive and create an allure for the position by emphasizing the importance of these civil service members.
Next, thorough training of employees can help ensure that everyone is set up to succeed, this can mimic in a more condensed form, the four-month training program SIA conducts that acts as a mix of boot camp and finishing school. Although SIA was able to exploit the exotic nature of their flight attendants, we do not advise MBTA to do the same.
Additionally, SIA was able to turn over its fleet via existing profits to enable the usage of new aircraft for flight. The MBTA will have a more challenging time doing this, but given there is a substantial investment in revitalizing the tracks for safety, this could be an excellent time to improve the aesthetics of the trains as well.
Lastly, SIA emphasizes the importance of listening to the customer. This is a great area for MBTA to utilize, especially given there are already Ambassadors at stations who can help conduct in-person polls and utilize their internet presence to conduct surveys with a statistically significant user group. Ensuring that any complaints are reviewed and acted on is crucial to SIA's customer service approach and should also be integrated into the MBTA's approach so Bostonians feel heard.
Overall, the MBTA has a lot to learn about superior customer service from SIA but even small practices can have a big impact and offer a great start at improving brand image.

LETTERS FROM AN AMERICAN
January 25, 2021
Heather Cox Richardson
My guess is that the story of today that will stand the test of time is that President Biden is governing according to our traditional practices while he pushes the country into the future.
Biden hit the ground running. In the first three days of his presidency, he has taken 30 executive actions (these are orders, memoranda, and directives). Most of these are directed toward fighting the coronavirus pandemic, but he has also overturned some of Trump’s policies: he has stopped construction of the border wall, ended the Muslim travel ban, cancelled the Keystone XL pipeline, rejoined the Paris climate accord, and rejoined the World Health Organization. He also ended the ban on transgender soldiers in the military. These measures fulfill campaign promises and are widely popular.
Today, Biden also launched out in a new direction. He signed an executive order requiring the federal government to buy more of the things it needs here in the United States, rather than buying cheaper products overseas. The directive is a middle ground between protectionism and free trade. The plan is to protect the supply chains for goods the federal government sees as vital, thus bolstering manufacturing in crucial areas.
Recently, the United States has been more willing than other nations to buy foreign goods for government contracts in the interests of keeping federal costs down. This measure will increase costs, but will give that money to Americans. The president of the labor organization the AFL-CIO called the measure “a good first step in revitalizing U.S. manufacturing,” but the U.S. Chamber of Commerce said it would increase the costs of government procurement and was unlikely to create jobs.
Today the new administration also swore in the first Black secretary of defense, retired general Lloyd Austin, and the Senate confirmed Janet Yellen as the first woman to hold the position of treasury secretary.
But what is taking oxygen today is the war between the two factions of the Republican Party: the Trump faction and the business faction. Republican leaders embraced Trump—unwillingly—in 2016 because he promised to bring energized voters to a party whose pro-business policies were increasingly unpopular.
During his presidency, Trump delivered to business Republicans their wish list: tax cuts and appointments of right-wing judges who are generally opposed to federal government power, which will benefit the businesses who oppose regulation. Trump played to his base and did his best to politicize the U.S. government and make it loyal to him. He seemed eager to turn the government into an oligarchy overseen by him and his children. Business Republicans looked the other way, refusing to convict him in his first impeachment trial.
But when Trump botched the coronavirus response, tanking the economy and turning the U.S. into an international laughingstock, business Republicans began to slide away from the Trump administration. His increasingly unhinged behavior over the course of the past year increased their discomfort. And then, his refusal to accept the outcome of the 2020 election sparked their alarm.
In contrast, Republicans who were hoping to pick up Trump’s supporters in future elections signed on to his challenge of the election outcome. For some of them, pushing the idea that there were questions about the election was a safe way to signal support for Trump and his supporters, knowing that argument would fail. Others, though, apparently intended to take that idea forward to attack our government.
The January 6 attack on the Capitol split the party. It was a profound attack on our government, in which a group of the president’s supporters overpowered police, broke into the Capitol while Congress was counting the electoral votes, and threatened the lives of the elected representatives who refused to throw out the results of the election and name Trump president.
The attack implicated a number of Republicans: the president, of course, and also Senators Josh Hawley (R-MO), who was the first senator to agree to challenge the counting of the certified electoral votes for Biden, and Ted Cruz (R-TX), who jumped on board the challenge, along with about ten other senators. More than 100 Republican representatives also signed onto the challenge.
Arizona Republican representatives Paul Gosar and Andy Biggs reportedly asked Trump for pardons before he left office because of their participation in the events leading up to the attack on the Capitol. Seven Democratic senators filed a complaint with the Senate Committee on Ethics asking for an investigation of how Hawley and Cruz might have contributed to the January 6 attack. Hawley is trying to brazen it out: today he filed a counter-complaint continuing his objection to the election results and attacking the seven senators who asked for the investigation.
The actions of the insurgents spurred corporate donors to flee, refusing to donate money either to them or to the Republican Party, at least in the short term. Today, Dominion Voting Systems, the company Trump’s lawyer Rudy Giuliani and other supporters accused of falsifying the election results, announced it was suing Giuliani for defamation, seeking damages of more than $1.3 billion.
In contrast, Republicans who care about the survival of our democracy joined Democrats to impeach Trump for inciting an insurrection. Some Republicans are taking a principled stand. Others are aware that Trump’s attack on our government destabilizes the country and hurts business. Further, they are aware that, if Trump or his supporters do manage to put a dictator in charge, the end to the rule of law would make it impossible to do business in this country. Finally, some business Republicans—like Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell—are furious with Trump for working against Republican Senate candidates in Georgia in his attempt to pressure party members to overturn the election results for him. Trump now has nothing to offer that they want.
The two Republican factions are struggling for control over the party. The Trump faction is organizing around the former president, who is launching broadsides at business Republicans he fears will vote to convict him in his upcoming impeachment trial. Over the weekend, he threatened to start a new political party—the Patriot Party—with the idea of backing Trump challengers to Republican politicians in upcoming Republican primaries. He took in a lot of money after the election on the promise to fight for his reelection; he may or may not have significant money to spend on new candidates. Determined to continue to pressure Republicans, today he launched an unprecedented “Office of the Former President.”
His supporters—including the Republicans implicated in the January 6 insurrection—are downplaying the attack on our government and suggesting that impeaching the president or holding accountable the lawmakers who helped the attack is “cancel culture.” They are insisting that questioning the election is simply free speech. “Give the man a break… move on,” former South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley said in opposition to Trump’s conviction in the Senate.
With Trump blocked from most major social media channels, state Republican parties are acting on his behalf. This weekend the Arizona Republican Party voted to censure Republicans Jeff Flake, the former Senator; Cindy McCain, Senator John McCain’s widow; and current Governor Doug Ducey, who got swept up in their dislike of Trump opponents because he didn’t try to switch the state’s electoral votes to Trump. The Oregon Republican Party did them one better, suggesting that the January 6 insurrection was a “false flag” operation by Democrats to discredit Trump. The Texas Republican Party is now openly supporting the QAnon conspiracy theorists.
Other Republicans are running away from the party as it becomes a personality cult. More than 2000 Florida Republicans switched parties after January 6, and today former Representative David Jolly of Florida, a Republican who has criticized Trump, floated the idea of running for Congress as an independent. About 7500 Republicans switched parties in Arizona. In North Carolina, 6000 Republicans switched out. An ABC News/Washington Post poll from January 10-13 discovered that almost 70% of Americans said the Republican Party should move away from Trump.
But business Republicans still need Trump voters, and the Wall Street Journal today urged them back into the fold. It will not be an easy sell: they are now wedded to Trump, not the party, and his interests are in pressuring Republican senators not to convict him in his upcoming impeachment trial and in keeping his supporters loyal to whatever he decides to do next.
Republicans have a problem. As an aide to House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy told Alayna Treene of Axios, “We’re eating sh*t for breakfast, lunch, and dinner right now.”
Lawmakers will soon have to make a choice about where they stand. The House managers took the article of impeachment to the Senate this evening.

Half-Orc Inquisitor
(Sorry this took so long, real life keeps draining me of energy.)
A repeating theme of the half-orc is persecution, so it’s interesting that today’s half-orc NPC is one whose entire job could be considered a form of persecution. Of course, when you’re “persecuting” undead horrors or demon worshippers not many are going to decry your actions. And the dedication, precision, and power of the inquisitor are what cause them to be seen as heroes of their faith.
Now, half-orc inquisitors have a lot of opportunities similar to their half-elven counterparts for stories. Maybe your NPC is part of a faith that orcs and non-orcs share and is working to prevent conflict and heal old wounds for their faith. Alternatively, they could have embraced their faith due to being an outcast and are more dedicated to it than any racial or cultural identity. Another possibility is the allure of an inquisitor’s status in their faith. They hold a position of power and responsibility similar to clerics or paladins but even more specialized. Whatever the case, these NPCs are profoundly defensive of their religion and fellow worshippers.
Irma Bosch [Domain: Knowledge]
Words and ideas should be free to flow from person to person. But some words, said in the right way, can be terrible instruments for darker powers. There are tomes and scrolls in the world whose words could destroy or corrupt to a terrible extent. Irma has been tasked with hunting these dread inscriptions and either destroying them or locking them away. As a half-orc in a land where her kind are more often servants to others, she can move through many places in disguise without drawing undo attention. Often working alone, she still keeps track of local mercenary groups or bands of adventurers who may come across ruins or bring whispers of her quarry. While not opposed to accepting help, Irma knows that any knowledge of what she seeks is dangerous if it spreads. So, if she has to, she will employ methods that others would find... questionable.
Mari Sobol [Domain: Darkness]
There are no churches to the god of thieves, but that does not mean he has no priests. Even more surprisingly, the Uncatchable has inquisitors who actively work to ensure that thievery and criminality in general are never entirely wiped out. Mari only ever ate because they stole food or coin, and so sees no benefit in a society without a seedy underbelly. To that end, Mari has travelled the world to places where the law is strong in order to weaken it. Or, at the very least, give crime a boost where needed. They have trained promising thieves, revitalized guilds and syndicates, and on occasion acted as an assassin with targets of lawmen, judges, and nobles.
Suman the Dedicated [Domain: Repose]
The desecration of the dead is one of the most vile acts one can make, at least according to the followers of the Good Boatman. This lesser deity is the protector of souls on their way to the afterlife, and as such his mortal followers protect those who are dying and the remains of those already gone. Suman is a “preserver,” though his role is not one of tending to graves. Though he chose his faith as a result of the lessons of his parents, he was not content to follow their ideals of pacifism. Too many across the land think they can simply break into graves and tombs to steal burial gifts and disturb hallowed spaces. The ancestral shrine of Suman’s own ancestor was found to have been looted. It drove him to start down the path of one who would stop the desecration. Now, he moves from graveyard to graveyard, shrine to shrine, and temple to temple, offering his services to faiths besides his own whose dead are disrespected. After all, everyone dies, no matter which god you follow.

Interview with a Graduate
Abbey Hoerchner
1. Are you working on any big projects at the moment?
We have been working on our NBA All-Star Campaign - with a big push for social and web graphics to get votes for Giannis, Khris and Bledsoe. We also had been pushing “Let Pat Dunk” to campaign for Pat Connaughton to get into the dunk contest for All-Star weekend - this was through both graphics and even t-shirt designs. We are also already thinking ahead to what our Playoff look will be come April - it is usually an edgier spin off our our regular season look. Lastly, the Bucks have an Esports gaming team for the NBA 2K League (video game). They draft 6 players who get paid a salary, receive benefits, have their housing paid for, and fly to NYC each week for their games. I am currently designing the look for their Season 3 Campaign - this includes their Draft graphics, Gameday graphics progression (Matchup Motion Graphic, Starting Lineup Motion Graphic, Live Now Motion Graphic, Half-Time Score Static Graphic, Player Stat Highlight Static Graphic, Final Score Static Graphic, Victory Motion Graphic), any general announcement graphics, etc. that will end up on social media.
2. What is your intent as designer?
I focus on capturing the attention of, engaging, and holding the interest of fans/followers. An obvious secondary intent is to efficiently and effectively organize information that is easy for the viewer to decipher.
3. How do you use design to positively impact a community?
At the Bucks, we had a large focus on building up the Deer District, the area around the arena, and getting the Milwaukee community to see it as a revitalized place that they want to spend time at. We focused on creating graphics that promoted the plaza, and highlighted the different restaurants and establishments, to ultimately bring people together.
4. In what way do you think students at UWM can use design to strengthen the culture in Milwaukee?
I think there may be opportunities to showcase neighborhoods, areas, events, etc that aren’t always heavily promoted whether digital or print. I think using class as a time for research and production is great, however I wonder still if there is a way to push research, ideas, designs (especially connected with Milwaukee culture/geography) further into the public than within the UWM network.
5. Is there anything you wish you had known prior to graduating?
Connecting with #8 below - the faster pace of design in the workplace would have helped my transition more immediately. I also work in Photoshop daily for actually creating digital graphics and I was not extremely efficient in that program, based on the high focus in upper-level DVC classes on InDesign and Illustrator.
6. Do you have any tips and/or words of encouragement for current design students?
One tip would be to get comfortable talking about your work, be confident in why you did what you did and be able to clearly explain it. In the workplace you may have a client (in my case another department) that doesn’t really understand what we do or why we do it. In these cases, it is imperative to be able to clearly articulate design reasoning. Be thorough in the design process from ideation to final product - it will help you in the long run figure out what process works best for you to get the strongest design. Along with this, I would say to push the boundaries and explore the possibilities of a design. Go out of the box and you can always reign it back in after review/critique. There could be something you tried that maybe could work as an idea for a future project. I would highly encourage students to get a design internship while still in school (ideally one that you can get paid AND get credit). I stumbled upon my internship with the Bucks during my final semester of school. As a Women’s Soccer athlete at UWM, I knew I was passionate about athletics, so was intrigued about practicing design in a sports industry. I think for others who don’t know which specific industry they would like to practice in, getting internships while still in school and with different companies (whether sports, ad agency, other companies) will help you decide what specific industry you are passionate about. If you think you may be interested in Motion Graphics/Animation - take the class while still in school. I ended up finding this was the focus of design I became most passionate about, as it mixes up the creation of static graphics. While I was interning at the Bucks, I was also taking the Motion Graphics class at UWM. At that time, there was not anyone at the Bucks who knew the program, so I started elevating some graphics by using simple animation. After interning, I continued to grow my Motion Graphics skills and from there became a Multi-Media Designer, working in Adobe After Effects daily. Along with static graphics, I also create many animations that go on social media and a lot of content that runs on the LED boards inside the bowl during games (crowd prompts, matchups, sponsored content, themed animations, etc).
7. What do you feel are important resources to consult during the design process?
Specific to my role at the Bucks - I do a lot of visual auditing of other teams to see what they are doing. I don’t stay in the realm of the NBA, but look at football, soccer, baseball, etc. When I am doing my research, I am usually looking at their social channels. I also utilize Pinterest and Behance to start ideating.
8. What are the differences between the professional design climate and the one created at UWM? Do you feel you were prepared for the changes?
I think UWM prepared me very well for a professional design career, especially when thinking about the very thorough design process we go through for each of our classes in school. I think this helped figure out a personal design process that works best for each individual (ie. I still like sketching ideas/layouts out, even if they are very rough….but there are other designers who go digital right away).
One big difference that I had to get acclimated to was the fast pace for a lot of projects at the Bucks. This may be due to the professional sports industry. With some special player announcement graphics, we may have to create something within the hour. Some information design graphics may have to be done in a day. On the other hand, there could also be a logo design that you have a few days to ideate, sketch and digitize before reviewing.
9. Beyond the finished product, what is the most important part of being a designer?
For me, I think an important part is still getting the face-to-face contact with whoever you are designing a project for, especially when it is for another department. For many projects, we could sit behind a screen, design a few iterations, send via email and continue that process until a final design is approved. I am a people person and like social interaction during my work day, therefore if I am able to chat with the individual before starting, or take an iteration over to them to discuss in-person, I will! I think this offers me a better perspective on what their ultimate vision for the project is.

As a person who is interested in learning about different languages and cultures, is it offensive if I want to learn the language of the First Nations tribe that is by my city? I am really interested in their culture and traditions, but not many speak their language left
Okay so, first of all, language is not a good place to start when learning about a culture and community. I’ve said this before but I have to stress it again. If you want to learn about a community, the place you should start at is with the people, their history, their current circumstances, and their traditions.
Now that that’s out of the way. . . Does this tribe have any resources for outsiders to learn the language? Like open programs, classes, etc? If there’s a cultural center or something similar that offers classes, then I would suggest asking them about it. If the classes are open to outsiders and are free, then I would absolutely recommend doing something to help out the community in exchange, like volunteering or donating money.
If there aren’t any open programs like that, then look into whether the tribe has a revitalization program going on and how you can support it. A lot of the time, those sorts of programs are restricted to the community because ofprioritization and lack of resources, but you could still donate or ask the heads of the program for other ways to support it. I know it may be frustrating to support language programs that don’t directly benefit you, but if you have a passion for language, then your priority should be to keep languages alive in their communities regardless.

Contactless payments

Simplified booking, reservation, check-in, and check-out procedures, room service orders, etc
Reduced waiting times at the front desk
It enhanced the personalized visit experience
Facilitated communication with the staff
So is Contactless technology in the hospitality industry impersonal or a positive experience?
Well, there is an excessive appetite for more contactless experiences throughout the travel journey. Several companies are leveraging contactless technologies accessible to help reimagine the guest experience and revitalize guests to utilize mobile dining, mobile check-in/check-out, mobile key, and mobile requests whenever feasible and wherever convenient.
Technology has been a crucial part of other industries, and hospitality is no exception; it is here to stay, so let us not think of it as impersonal. It is an integral part of modern life. It can be utilized to extend personal touch, and this will assist in presenting a wide-cut contactless service in the hospitality sector.
Contactless technology is an efficient tool — it will help industries adapt to the change in the hotel culture due to the shift in consumer behavior and expectations. Businesses need to understand that contactless technology in hospitality can increase social interaction. To conclude, contactless technology contributes to and helps create a connected place that brings people back together, in safe spaces, interacting and engaging.

To explain why Americans aren’t moving to where the jobs are, look no further than The Newcomers, an excellent book about a year in the life of South High School’s ELL program, peopled by refugees and illegal immigrants from every pocket of the world.
Let me tell you how good Thorpe’s book is: she believes that we should bring in millions, or at least hundreds of thousands, of refugees every year. She inserts herself constantly into the story, bleating platitudes about the magical qualities of people who simply happen to come from another country. A truly admirable African family of ten move themselves off subsidies in a matter of months, while their two high school kids RFEP-ed in less than a year. An almost certainly mentally ill Iraqi woman turns down or loses most of the jobs she’s offered, buys two cars when she still can’t make the rent, and barely parents her two daughters who skip school every week, until she nearly kills one of them in an at-fault wreck in one of the cars she couldn’t afford–but hey, that’s ok, because, you know, Medicaid will spend millions on the daughter’s recovery.
…
At some point while writing this piece, I saw a comment characterizing the romantic, narcissistic mindset driving the left on immigration. (edit: thanks to my own commenters who pointed me to the source)
Immigrants are sacred not because they save us, but because their presence gives us the chance to show how we can save them.
We are the agents; they are helpless and can do nothing without our grace.
That captures Thorpe’s mindset beautifully.
So I’m recommending Thorpe’s book despite vehement disagreement with her savior-complex political and philosophical values, despite the relentless shilling of a refugee and immigration policy I find extremely harmful.
Thorpe is irritating, but thorough. Her rhapsodies on the mystical value of shared culture is as easily parodied as Wordsworth is on spades, but deeply reported narratives here and abroad, the vivid classroom descriptions, and (most importantly), the in-depth look at the expensive and relentless support the refugees received are worth the near-epileptic eye-rolls her misty-eyed romances induce.’
…
Liberals like Troy get paid by government grants to help refugees. Conservative Christians like Mark volunteer for free.
Oh, that’s not fair. There were plenty of free services offered by liberals: in-class therapy, Goodwill teacher aides, and the aforementioned foodbanks. All tax-deductible, of course, and often covered by federal grants.
…
As a group, would be immigrants have only one universal shortcoming: they aren’t American. We owe our fellow Americans the resources, staffing, and opportunities we lavish on immigrants, refugee or otherwise.
While Thorpe goes into considerable detail about the cost of relocating and settling refugees, she never mentions the fortune we spend educating all these first and second generation immigrants–some of whom become exceptional, most of whom need welfare just like mom and dad do.
Scratch the surface of every happy story report of a region that welcomed immigrants, refugees or otherwise, to “revitalize” its economic doldrums, and you’ll see a mention of the tremendous cost of educating new refugees. Immigrants cost much more to educate than native English speakers. They have smaller classes. They have lots of teacher’s aides, often hired from the immigrant community–another jobs program. Sometimes, immigrant parents become unhappy with the local schools so they use public dollars to set up an immigrants only charters, or perhaps they’ll attend one of the many public schools using tax dollars to run ESL-only schools.
Thorpe describes the refugees’ work: dishwashers, factory jobs, meatpacking plants. She sees it as a selling point: look, the refugees are working, providing for themselves. Without refugees filling these jobs, perhaps the employers would be forced to pay more. I’m certain rents would be much lower. Perhaps natives–black, white, Asian, Hispanic–would be able to take the jobs as dishwashers and meatpackers and make a living with additional government aid. If every immigrant job was automated away with no net improvement in citizen employment, we’d still be saving a fortune in education and Medicaid from the refugees that don’t become self-sufficient and their descendants.
In another piece on these undeserving American poor, Kevin Williamson suggests that housing policy would encourage the worthy to relocate. While it’s certainly true that Americans are reluctant to relocate to expensive cities, Williamson neglects to mention that immigrants resettling to cities to provide cheap labor are driving up housing costs. And the immigrants’ housing is cushioned by support organizations hunting down the apartments, furnishing them, and handing out ready cash.
To say nothing of the fact that employers in high-immigration areas use network hiring, create immigrant “job ghettos”, and are actively biased in favor of immigrants over citizens.. Then, of course, refugees come over with their entire families, all of whom are unemployed with no work history. American citizen families are more complex. Fathers might not want to leave their children after a divorce, or a girlfriend might have a good job that a move would put at risk.
…
The entire script of sacred immigration is based on uplift. The only way to save America’s soul is to pay to transport thousands of uneducated immigrants, those “huddled masses”, send them to American schools at taxpayer expense, find them living quarters that increases the demand for housing and drives up costs, spend thousands of hours helping them find and, best case, keep low-paying American jobs. That last bit, of course, is why business has become so relentlessly progressive, or as Ross Douthat puts it, signed on for the Peace of Palo Alto.
When Charles Murray, Kevin Williamson, and others wonder why the hell American workers don’t move, why not instead ask why the hell we spend so much time and resources importing unskilled workers with scores of children who cost a fortune to educate, when we could be spending that money supporting American workers to relocate?
Helen Thorpe’s book answers Murray and Williamson’s questions posed at the beginning of this piece. Americans don’t move to where the jobs are because immigrants, refugees or otherwise, get there first. Immigrants aren’t better than Americans. They’re just more sympathetic to elites with a savior fetish and more affordable to employers who want cheap labor. And so they benefit from entire public and private infrastructure that uses taxpayer dollars to help those immigrants provide cheap labor and burden our educational system while locking out Americans who need a second, fourth, or eighth chance.
