When this line of dialogue was uttered my brain imagined that the plot would develop as follows:
These fake Doctor and Donna shapes are the representation of the "dark" parts within the real characters. (The parts that hate the other).
In the case of Donna its the part of her that blames the Doctor for every dangerous situation she was ever put in, every trauma she experienced during her travels. (Yes I know she's an adult woman who went voluntarily, but there is an element of dark seduction inherent to every Doctor-Companion dynamic. Quote from the 11th Doctor: "I brought them here. They'd say it was their choice, but offer a child a suitcase full of sweets and they'll take it. Offer someone all of time and space and they'll take that, too." ) More importantly, it's the part of Donna that blames the Doctor and hates him for the way he violated her by taking away her memories against her expressed will.
With the Doctor, I'd go even darker:
his dark version hates Donna as he hates all humans, so fallible, so stupid, so breakable, never lasting, always leaving him for someone else in the end. Why won't they understand him? Why was Donna so weak, why wasn't she strong enough to keep the metacrisis stable? Yes, her feeble human brain and body were weak and pathetic. It's Donna's fault that he's alone, the Metacrisis Donna could have been his real mate, someone who would not leave, someone equal to him, someone who would truly understand him. And here she is now, scared, pathetic, spilling coffee, destroying his TARDIS and whining like a child at the thought of being left alone for five minutes...

[id: five gifs from the god complex, an episode of doctor who. the first gif shows the eleventh doctor talking to rita. rita says, "why is it up to you to save us? that's quite a god complex you have there." the doctor replies, "i brought them here. they'd say it was their choice, but offer a child a suitcase full of sweets and they'll take it. offer someone all of time and space and they'll take that, too. which is why you shouldn't." the second gif shows the doctor staring at the minotaur, translating its words. he says, "you have lived so long even your name is lost. you want this to stop. because you are just instinct." the third gif shows the doctor talking to rita again. she says, "all of time and space, eh?" he says, "oh, yeah. and when we get out of this, i'll show you, too." rita replies, "i don't know what you!'re talking about, but whatever it was, i have a feeling you just did it again." the fourth gif shows the doctor talking to amy. he says, "i stole your childhood and now i've led you to your death. but the worst thing is, i knew. i knew this would happen. this is what alway happens. forget your faith in me. i took you with me because i was vain. because i wanted to be adored." the fifth gif shows the doctor translating the dying minotaur again. he says, "an ancient creature, drenched in the blood of the innocent, drifting in space through an endless, shifting maze. for such a creature, death would be a gift." the doctor stops translating, and says, "then accept it, and sleep well." he translates again: "i wasn't talking about myself." /end id]
Faith is an energy, the specific emotional energy the creature needs to live. Every time the Doctor gets pally with someone, I have this overwhelming urge to notify their next of kin.
