So, this. I was homeschooled, and I will say. I did meet people who had legitimate reasons that homeschooling was better for them. Many had been in public school and were severely bullied, most due to disabilities. I myself was bullied relentlessly and my mom cites that as her reason for pulling me and my siblings out of school. (She was also enamored with the idea of downsizing into a trailer and traveling the country. Yes, with a newborn baby, two audhd kids, a dog, and her crumbling marriage) Here's how that went:
The thing is, I didn't stop being bullied when I was pulled out, I just didn't have any escape from the bullying happening in my home. I went from having a small group of friends and acquaintances and teachers to talk with to only my abusive mother, absent father, struggling little brother, and the baby I was raising in place of my mom. (She slept in the same bed as me for the first 6 years, I fed, bathed, changed, and entertained her)
Occasionally, we would fall in with homeschooling co-ops, but inevitably, drama would happen, and I learned not to get attached. I don't think I could name one single person I met during that time period if you held a gun to my head. The whole traveling the country thing didn't work out, and we went from having a house to camping or renting in small spaces. I was 12 when I started homeschooling, and I stayed at a 5th grade education level for the most part until I was 16. My mom soon stopped having any interest or ability to teach me, so I mostly just read and fucked around all day. It was boring and frustrating, I didn't have consistent access to the internet, and I fought with my family all the time.
My state doesn't require homeschoolers to submit a report card or have the children see a counselor once a year, or really anything. In 2015, my mom gave up on educating me and put me in a dual enrollment program at a community college for high schoolers, and that was what got me finally to something approaching my peers on an education level. It also finally put me in contact with adults who cared about me and wanted me to succeed, professors who checked on my progress and listened to my concerns. A library with an internet connection and nobody watching what books I was reading.
That school saved my life, and I don't say that lightly.
In 2017, a fellow homeschooler in my state was not so lucky. Matthew Tirado was a 17 year old nonverbal autistic kid who was enrolled in public school. His parents were repeatedly reported for child abuse, especially by his sister, until they took his sister out of school completely. Two months later, Matthew died. His sister didn't have any way of contacting outside help anymore, and her brother died because their parents knew that nobody could speak up for him any more.
I remember everyone else's horror, and outrage, and I remember my mom. The woman who had abused me when she knew I had nobody to go. She was scared. Because she still had my younger siblings, and she did not want to face consequences. So many homeschooling parents in my state did the same, and they fought hard to defend their right to abuse their kids. And they won.
To this day, in my state 36% of parents who pulled their child from public school in order to homeschool them did so *after* a Department of Child and Family Services (DCF) investigation revealed that they were abusing their children. That's more than one fourth. Once a child is pulled out of school in my state, there are no requirements accommodations, no therapy, no supports, and no accountability. Homeschool parents willfully practice 'unschooling' or buy curriculums from shady organizations that purport to provide an education that will turn their children into whatever parents want them to be.
Public schools aren't great. We all know this. Neither are private schools, in a different, equally fucked way. But homeschooling with no checks or balances, nobody even making sure the kids are still alive after they're out of the system? It's a level of nightmare I dearly wish nobody had to experience. And I got off so lightly.
Anyway enough lame gifted kid discourse we are in our 20s. Let's talk about how homeschooling in america should be fucking illegal it's insane lol

Hi! I was wondering If you'd be up for writing shy reader with Remus and him being just as flustered over her? Thank you!!
Tumblr media
Out Of Order
 a/n: Thank you for requesting this was cute! <3
Word count: 0.5k
Remus heard the bell ring at the shop but paid no mind, really. He was assigned to the register, but the day was slow, and everyone who had come in so far had left without a book.
The customer who walked in didn’t seem to need help. No one interrupted him, so Remus was deep into his book, slouched over the counter, when he heard someone shuffle, as if trying to make noise.
Then he heard a voice, “Hi.”
The sound of it alone caused him to freeze as he looked up. He blinked quickly, adjusting the reading glasses resting on his nose. The smile the stranger gave him made him clear his throat, sit up straight, and ditch the glasses altogether.
“Sorry. Sorry, uh, yeah?”
The smile you gave him made his cheeks flush, but he blamed it on the heater being right next to him.
“No, I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to bother you. I just… I wanted to buy this,” you said, holding the book out to him. “I’m half convinced I should buy whatever book you’re reading. You didn’t notice I was here for like four minutes.” It was a joke, he thought, but he forgot to laugh, his eyes fixated on you as if trying to memorize your face.
You mistook his staring for judgment and cleared your throat. “I was just—”
He cut you off.
“Sorry, sorry! I swear I’m usually better at my job. Yeah, the book’s uh, good. I honestly think I just zoned out,” he said sheepishly. “But sure, I can ring this up for you.” He cringed at himself. “Obviously. That’s why you came up to me.”
You relaxed, realizing he was probably just a bit socially awkward—almost more than you.
You realized you should probably say something, but there was too long of a pause to continue, so you asked something else, “You like working here, then?”
Remus let out a breath, glad to move on. “Yeah, it’s nice. I don’t really have to do much. You’re the first person who’s actually bought something today,” he said, scanning the book’s barcode. The book you chose was part of a series Remus had read out of order. “The fourth book is horrible.”
You raised a brow. “You’ve read it?” The cover was purple, and you were surprised. He didn’t look like someone who would read it, but maybe that was just stereotypical. He looked smart, and his hair looked soft, and he smelled good, and—
“Well, not that one exactly. But the fourth book, yes.” He laughed a little. “Actually, now that I think about it, I might’ve only thought it was so bad because I had no idea what was going on without reading the first three.”
He watched you huff a little, a breathless laugh. “Yeah, that’s probably it,” you said, your voice soft, and he leaned in a bit to hear it, wanting to soak it up.
“You can let me know how it goes, then.” He felt his cheeks burn at the implication. “If you come back to buy the second one, I mean.”
He noticed the slight pink tinge to the apples of your cheeks, and he felt slightly better. He passed the bag to you, shuddering slightly when he felt your fingertips brush his.
You nodded, looking flustered. “Sure.” With that, you quickly exited the store, a grin on your face and ears tipped red.

I remember reading in one of your blog entries (years ago??) that in the new book you were writing, the main character's *sister* had cancer. Does that mean that Alice was originally the main character of Long Live Evil? Was she going to go into the book to save Rae, instead of Rae going in to save herself?
How extremely kind of you to remember!
No, that was actually a YA murder mystery that I wrote while ill, revised while recovering, and sent out into the world where it died on submission. (Which means we sent it out to about 12 editors and the editor either said no, or said yes and took it to acquisitions - a group of people at the publisher including sales and marketing - and acquisitions said no.)
One editor told me she really wanted and really tried to buy it. Another person who worked in publishing (and has since changed jobs, or I wouldn’t share this) said the response at her acquisitions was - if you like this writer, find the next her (implications about health and youth were made).
I was terrified my agent was going to ditch me too, but she said ‘We’ll sell that one day, for now let’s write the next thing.’
I remember another writer telling me she missed my work that wasn’t a tie-in, and I felt ashamed to tell her it wasn’t that I wasn’t writing other things - it was that I couldn’t publish them.
The tie-ins meanwhile were paying the bills (they still are tbh!) and I was and remain so grateful for them. But I also really loved writing them - especially my Sabrina tie-ins, you don’t forget the first, and it reminded me I want to write horror and poly one day - and how they got me to love and sympathise with so many fandoms.
I see the burnout of caregivers all around me, and I wanted to write the story of one. But maybe I also wanted to take a step back from cancer. I didn’t think I did, at the time. I had a whole lot of things I tried writing before Long Live Evil, and I think some of them were really good. One of my critique partners gave me a lipstick with the same name as someone in the murder mystery. There was a romance novel another critique partner said was her favourite thing I’d ever written. But none had someone with cancer at the heart of the story.
And even though Rae isn’t much like me, maybe I had to start there. You can’t make real magic using someone else’s liver. Maybe I had to wait to be brave enough to use my own liver.
I do get requests for advice on how to cope with rejection of your writing, and I always worried I didn’t have anything else to say, but I suppose my example says - if you can, (and I know it’s hard, you feel so terrible at writing and so useless) (and you love the work you’ve done so much and you don’t see a way forward to loving the next thing) (but still, if you possibly can) write the next thing.
Even if the first thing sells, you’ll want the next thing one day. Writing the next thing is more writing practise, so it’ll make you better. Write the next thing.
Ultimately I’m really glad Long Live Evil was my comeback book. I think it needed to be. It took the time it took.
But maybe it was a shade of that past book (where the heroine’s sister with cancer was six, so not much like any of the Time of Iron characters) that made me think of the YA version of this book, which I always had in my mind as something I was intentionally hewing away from - a more straightforward book, a book that might have sold better - in which shy reader Alice was the hero. She’s the one with the suggestive hero name - Alice through the looking glass - the heroine looks, and the more projectable-upon personality. She’d get called annoying less often (though still some, because she’s a girl), partly because she is (with love, Rae knows I’m right) a genuinely less annoying person. Much kinder, much sweeter, and much better at in-depth reading! Her sister being in trouble would’ve been a backstory, a catalyst point, and - you’re totally right - a great motivation for her to get the Flower. Saving a family member is a much more sympathetic and heroic motivation than saving yourself and one I do love (the Hunger Games, Labyrinth, Mahy’s the Changeover, and I write it a lot!). I think Snarky While Tragically Dying Rae would’ve been a pretty popular side character, too. I think it would’ve been a good book! Just not mine.
I love your question because I love thinking about POV, and all the decisions that are the building blocks of a story. To me, the Alice centric Time of Iron is a version that exists. As are several versions of the Lia centric Time of Iron. And versions centring other characters exist to me, too. (Eric, absolutely.)
Speaking of POV musing, I think Rahela the wicked stepsister featured more in the musical than the book. If the Time of Iron series ever became a TV show (and at this point in time I think I’d rather a movie because it wouldn’t… get cancelled…) and I got to write it (don’t know why I would…) I would start with the beginnings for three characters about to go on a journey to somewhere strange to them: Key in the Cauldron, Rae in the hospital, and Vasilisa in the icelands. There are so many possibilities! And I really wanted the sense that there were so many possibilities, too.
But I wanted the chronically ill one to be the centre of the story, and for it to be her villain origin story, and to ask a lot of questions (hence a lot of villains!) about who gets villainised and why. And I thought hers, to my mind, would be the most fun of all the possible stories.
So that’s the one I made. But Long Live Evil has a lot of origins. Thank you for remembering one of them! I don’t think I would’ve dared tell the story, if things hadn’t worked out for me (so far, fingers crossed).
And I also tell it to be clear my publisher was taking a RISK with me and Long Live Evil, and I really appreciate that, and I’m so happy it’s worked out for them (again so far, early days, fingers crossed, etc).
I hope some writers - whether in the process of submission, rejection or making the choices that are the building blocks of story - find this helpful, and some readers find it interesting.
Let this be one of the universes in which your story is told.

Where did the money for Zuko's quest for the Avatar come from?
So Zuko got burned and banished and told that he had to find the Avatar to return home.
But the thing is that Zuko got a ship. Sure, it was an smaller, probably older ship, but it still represents a lot of value. And it has all sorts of running costs associated with it: coal, ammo for the trebuchets, feed for the war rhinos, spare parts, major repairs for whenever Avatar crashes it into an iceberg, etc. And then there's the crew. They need to be recruited or assigned somehow, replaced if there are deaths or desertions, fed, and paid. All of this costs a lot of money.
And then there's the fact that even beyond that, Book 1 Zuko and Iroh never seem to be short on money. They have plenty of fine food, Iroh can buy whatever he wants at the market, and Zuko even promises June "Iroh's weight in gold" if she helps capture Aang. All of this suggests that there's some substantial financial power behind Zuko.
Where is this money coming from? I see four main possibilities:
Zuko is being funded by the Fire Nation government, as part of the Fire Nation Navy. If this is true, this probably means that Ozai OK'd this government money going to his banished son. Note that the very much non-canon "Zuko's Story" comic (it was made in association with the much hated movie) has Azula be the one who interceded with Ozai and convinced him to give Zuko a ship.
As a prince, even a banished one, Zuko has access to some money, property, or income in his own name as part of his birthright, and this money is going to fund Zuko's expedition even with Zuko in exile. Note that this would mean that Ozai didn't bother to or perhaps want to strip Zuko of all his royal privileges.
Iroh has access to wealth, property, and income in his own name as a royal prince and as the former crown prince, and he's using to it fund the expedition.
Azula has access to some money or income in her own name due to being royalty, and she's using it to fund Zuko's quest. I think this is by far the least likely possibility, but it would also be objectively the funniest one if it were true.

Unconventional
[Sakusa Kiyoomi x Artist! Fem! Reader]
Sakusa chuckled, "You got a very unconventional way to propose a friendship"
Sakusa always notice your presence whenever you're nearby.
You're always on your phone among the cheering crowd in Itachiyama's tournaments. Sakusa is always wondering if you're actually recording his matches or something.
He also wondered why he wishes you would cheer for him rather than doing whatever you do with your phone.
"I don't even know her name...", Sakusa muttered under his breath after he put on his mask again as he walked out of the gymnasium with his teammates.
"Whose name?", Komori asked, startling Sakusa a little as he didn't realized he was thinking out loud.
Sakusa stared at his cousin for a second, considering if he should ask him or not.
"The funny looking girl who's always on her phone on our matches", Sakusa's curiosity wins him over this time.
"Oh, her? I believe her name is [Last Name] [First Name]", Komori answered his question.
Sakusa hummed as a response, trying to make it seems like he's done being interested. Deep down, he knows he's far from being done looking for anything about you.
~~~
Apparently, you're a relatively new transfer student in Itachiyama. Your class is next to his, so Sakusa sometimes see you at the hallway.
Whenever you make eye contact with him, you always smile at him but says nothing.
Sakusa noticed how your eyes would lighten a bit whenever you noticed his presence. He also noticed you always bring a book wherever you go. For three months, no words are exchanged between the two of you, despite how badly Sakusa wants to.
"Sakusa! Someone is looking for you", Iizuna shouted from the door of the school gym.
Sakusa saw you panicked and said something to his team captain before you practically running away from the gym.
"What happened?", The curly haired boy was saddened as he thought he finally got a chance to talk to you.
"Here, she said it's for you", Iizuna handed him the book you're always carrying everywhere. He can read the book title right away, [First Name]'s Sketchbook.
Sakusa decide to open the sketchbook when he's finally alone in his bedroom.
The book is full of your headshot and bust up drawing of him, from rough sketches to fully rendered ones. Sakusa noticed your artstyle varies based on the media you used, although he can't name them one by one as he's not an artsy type himself. However, there's something remarkable about your artstyle that anyone will recognize.
~~~
The next day, Sakusa wasted no time to go to your class first thing in the morning.
You were already sitting at your desk by the time he arrived. Mixed feelings swirling inside you as the curly dark haired boy approached you.
"Why do you give this sketchbook to me?"
You smiled at his question, "Consider it as something I offer in exchange of a friendship I want with you"
Sakusa chuckled, "You got a very unconventional way to propose a friendship"
You sheepishly answered, "I'm not very good at expressing my feelings in words"
"Same, but I'm not skilled at anything else than volleyball. I'll just buy you another sketchbook in return, sounds good?"
You giggled, "Is gift giving your love language?"
Although he's wearing his mask, you can sense a smirk across Sakusa's face, "Isn't it yours too?"
Your giggles subsided, "Yeah, you're right"
The two of you know these remarks a new friendship bond that's going to differ from the usual.

Headcanon:
Elain and Nesta knew Feyre wouldn’t buy things for herself until she felt the need to even when they saw the need, so they asked for things for themselves to give her hand me downs.
The new boots Nesta wanted when Feyre came home with the pelt even though Feyre saw Nesta’s perfectly fine pair next to hers falling apart? Nesta broke them in so Feyre wouldn’t get blisters or friction burn climbing a tree in new ones and get frostbite, and then Nesta asked for new ones so Feyre could wear the broken-in ones. Elain asking for a new cloak? She knew it was getting cold and Feyre would need more layers out in the wind all day.
From book 1, Feyre is asking Tamlin to earn her keep from the moment she arrives. In the night court, she enjoys working even when she doesn’t need to and even when she and Rhysand say they barely have enough time both to be with each other and to sleep. They’re both prone to taking care of others at the expense of themselves and not take care of their own needs, and the sisters know this about Feyre.
I don’t think their mother tried to burden Feyre with keeping the sisters together; I think Elain saw herself as a helpless burden and Nesta saw herself as a thorn in her side, and only Feyre would give of herself to keep them together - not because the others only cared for themselves but because they wanted better for Feyre.
I think their mother probably knew that their skills and what they had been taught and trained for would be useless in survival, but Feyre was not only a fighter but a protector. Elain was more of a caretaker, and Nesta was begging her father to fight.
I also think that Elain was probably the one to teach their father to walk again and to take care of him for all those years. She probably did most of the housework except for cooking. I think the one thing she probably avoided was cooking both because they would only be able to know what they were eating once Feyre got home and because she may have feared burning food which would waste what little they had.
Do I think this was the original idea SJM had when writing book 1? Probably not. But by now? Yeah maybe.

i was given marching orders to read 'the secret hours' as i had many questions pertaining to molly doran and lamb's relationship with her. i've finished it so now i need to have a think with you all. 😭
most of molly's pov felt strangely like standish's usual pov. i guess because they both possess that bookish quality about them.
apparently nicking scarves isn't a new preoccupation for lamb so my headcanon re: scarfgate is that standish bought a scarf, jackson stole it and she had to buy a new one to replace her old one. that's why they look almost identical.
i suppose neither mick herron or will smith knew this at the time that s2 was written or filmed, but lamb knew dickie way better than any of us have been led to believe.
i wrote out the timeline from when lamb's stasi joe was killed to when partner's death/the standish saga begins and there's seemingly no time at all between the events. everything happened within a span of three years give or take.
there's a line of dialogue or two that mentions river being born/cartwright becoming a granddad and i enjoyed that.
also the seeds were planted for the creation of slough house back then too via dialogue and i thought that was v crafty.
i had assumed that lamb and molly had a longer, possibly romantic relationship but they definitely did not. she knew him for a month, slept with his friend/asset, was involved in a bombing and then didn't see or speak to lamb for fifteen years. idk why i'm bummed by that. it didn't satisfactorily explain to me why lamb and molly seem so warm with each other in the books/on the show. also i think i wanted some assurance that lamb had loved/is capable of loving someone? idk i wanted to meet a version of him that isn't exactly the version of him we have now.
final thoughts: a HUGE part of my lamb and standish obsession is trying to work out why standish? what was so special about her that made lamb do x, y and z before and after partner's death? and i guess this book helped me refine the 'he felt guilty' angle of the why standish? question a bit better... but it STILL doesn't all the way work for me? what happened to molly happened relatively close to partner's death and she essentially ended up being a victim of partner and cartwright too. so why not molly? instead of standish, why didn't he take on molly? is it because he felt molly had betrayed him in berlin, going to cartwright when he'd asked her not to? was it because molly knew ALL OF THE THINGS and in order to start fresh, he needed someone around who knew NONE OF THE THINGS? please, i need to understand! what was it about standish that made him cling to her and never want to let go?

Searching for overseas musician autobiographies that are NOT Keith Richards or a KISS member in the middle nowhere of French countryside thrift shops is like searching for a needle in the middle of a haystack
#sorry i can't stop talking about my holy grail (bob henrit's book)#but it's out of print. unavailable on ebay. nowhere to be seen on amazon. zilch on vinted. and i'm not british so it's extra hard to find it#i swear if i find it i'm making it my entire personality and i'll be insufferable for months#and even then... the bands i like are either unpopular or their books weren't translated (yet)#and i'm only talking about second hand since it's where i usually get books since i'm too used to not spending much#i can easily find books by more popular musicians (nick mason. neil young. dave grohl) first-hand in shops#but it's because their books were translated in french. and language plays a large part in availability#i have yet to check if the davies brothers' books are on vinted though#and even if i try to gather my courage and try to buy things through the net (or even physically)#there's this thing where my mother drilled through my head to not impulse buy (i'm very prone to that)...#except that now i struggle to differentiate impulse buys and things i genuinely want. so i just don't buy and think for months#and by the time i made my decision they're not here anymore and i get depressed because i think i should have trusted my gut#(i spent an entire year eyeing a weki meki album once because my mother refused to get it for me since she thought it was an impulse buy#ended up getting it for myself after i got the pass culture... trusted my gut and i had an inclusion of my bias in it)#and i feel i have to tell my mother about everything i want to buy so i can get her approval#... which can be a double-edged knife as she has knowledge but also she has a very “money-saving” mindset and doesn't like spending much#on things she doesn't consider are worth for their price. whereas i have a more “as long as i get it” mindset (which isn't a good thing)#..#sorry i got carried away 😭#you don't have to read all of this

(my 9am english)#which kind of killed step 1 of a plan of mine but thats okay#anyways THEN i had to go downtown to pick up this award bc i forgot to show up to the ceremony like a dumb dumb#but the building was like a 25 minute walk and it was COLD (punishment for my dumb dumbness tbh) but anyways i got there early so i walked#around the block and then went inside and picked up my medal#and i was already far downtown so then i popped my head in a couple of stores as i slowly walked back#got a few things from target. new hair clip nail polish m&ms pens and then a mango. very excited to eat that either later today or tomorrow#then i popped in the calligraphy store and then the comic shop and looked around. saw some white ribbon in the calligraphy store which ive#been looking for but didnt get it because it was a bit wide and kind of expensive and i want a lot for my project idea#(want to write out some of my favorite poems on them in sharpie and then use it to accessorize)#and then i went to the comic shop and peeked around. saw a nubia issue and a few gl 2021s in the discount bin but i didnt get them bc#they were all middle issues and i havent read those books yet although i do want to someday bc my guys were in them. one of the gl 21s even#had simon on the cover so i was very !!!!!!!! thats my guy!!!!!#didnt buy anything there but i did ask the guy to make sure to order a copy of the spirit world tpb so ill stop by to get that in a few wks#and then i went to the bookstore cafe and got a cold brew and did a but of English there. they have tables in the stacks its nice. the one i#grabbed was just surrounded by old paperbacks of sci fi and thrillers lol. didnt see anything id read but recognized a few author names like#card (no enders game though) and the pern lady (idk her name i havent read it). anyways did half a blog post thats technically late (ill#backdate though dw) and then packed up and i grabbed a gyro from the halal cart on that block which i just finished back at my dorm <3333#anyways good times. now im gonna try and spam some work and go to freaking trivia team for the first time in a month later. oops#blah#oh and i think the halal cart guy may have given me a free soda. unsure abt that though bc its possible it came with and i was just being#silly again. so anyways i had a ginger ale too

I decided to replay the second chapter of TDA to get the study room and honestly… it’s made me like Nat less already. I feel like he falls into the category of LIs who are the lesser of two evils compared to the person MC is currently with… because these comments don’t sit right with me

reading book? too much effort. sitting down and writing replies?? can't focus.
youtube rabbit hole of in-depth Barbie history and architectural design of dream houses and playsets? i got all da focus in da world baybeee!
#barbie has always been an Interest especially in adult years since i more or less refrained from being#a hardcore barbie enjoyer because ykno not to gender talk on a tues but i rejected just about everything typically femme because i did not#want to be seen as femme or fully femme from a young age#so even if i really liked barbies i distanced myself from them pretty fast :'(#so now i think im compensating by like. instead of buying them for myself because i dont really want to collect. i just like lmao#obsessively info dive and watch commercial compilations and shit kdjfgdg#anyway did you know barbie has two younger siblings besides her main three that were actually her youngest ones#tutti and todd and they havent been seen since the late 90s? like theyre recognized in terms of history but in terms of#barbie lore and canon theyve been completely retconned out cuz theyve never shown up in sets or movies or anything#did you also know they were made of a bendable soft plastic as opposed to hard and the wires were prone to poking through and stabbing kids#and that the plastic stored like shit and if you put them (soft plastic) on your other dolls (hard) they would literally#melt into each other?? :)#barbie also has lots of cousins just got mentioned briefly and then annihilated from technical canon lol#oooh and then there's also Blaine who is an ex bf of barbie that was made specifically to date her briefly during a sort of campaign#barbie broke up with ken and got with blaine but ofc she got back with ken and after that blaine was never seen nor mentioned again. he deA#anyway happy tuesday im gonna eat my soup and try and break out of this info consuming trance so i can wrITE#oHOH and last silly trivia being barbie has lots of canon relatives that havent been retconned or anything BUT they've also never been made#into dolls. off the top of my head i think some of these include like uhhh her mom and dad and some aunts and shit#tho i think these are either just mentioned in passing or from the barbie movies or some in books
