Making a level 0 Lancer character just to try it out and I wanted to make a kinda support character, so I ended up with a playstyle that does stuff like using Lock On to support allies, and also placing drones and using tech attacks. When it came time to pick my weapons, I realized I probably won't actually be shooting them too often, so weapons that require reloading won't have that much of a downside.

And that's how my support character ended up wielding a pair of Missile Racks and a Superheavy Cyclone Pulse Rifle.

Hear me out, ok. Sentinel Prime heavily, heavily advocates for chastity. He very publicly denounces casual intimacy, waxing poetic about how it's a very special thing that should only be shared with someone you truly love and trust. To give yourself away to a stranger in a one night stand or even casually to a friend is one of the greatest disservices one can do to themselves. Interfacing should only be done with your bonded mate. While it's certainly not illegal, their Prime's warm concern and insistence that they're all special and should be treated as such keeps a lot of mecha's panels closed. The vast majority of them are saving themselves for their conjunx endura.

Now, the real reason Sentinel doesn't want them having sex? He doesn't want them breeding. Specifically the lowest of society, he doesn't want his cogless servants sparking each other up and having babies with t-cogs. It would raise too many questions, and while he has no qualms about taking a newspark's cog out before they're presented to their parents, accidents happen. People slip up. Some sparklings come before their parents can get to a hospital. Some nutcases want home births because it's "more intimate and natural". Some just plain don't realize they're carrying until they start having contractions. Cogless bots popping out babies with cogs will only cause problems, so the best way to prevent such a thing is to convince them that chastity is their best option. Most of them die before they can find someone they want to be with forever, and even among those that do, they struggle to save up enough money for a bonding license. Keeping them repressed and chaste is just another means of his control.

Now, as for sweet D-16 >:) he practically worships Sentinel Prime. He has such blind adoration and trust in him. Orion adores him too, of course, but not quite on the same level. He doesn't look at Sentinel with the same stars in his optics, though certainly has boundless respect and admiration for him. When they're visited by the Prime post-Iacon 5000, they're invited up to his personal suite 👀

Consider: instead of getting immediately jumped by Darkwing, they actually do get escorted up there. It's grander than anything either of them have ever seen, a shining and spotless penthouse with a 360° view of the city, expensive chaises to lounge on and bottles of the finest, smoothest high grade, even a jacuzzi! Sentinel Prime meets them there, and, placing a gentle hand on each of their faces, purrs that he wants to reward them.

"I've never seen anything like what you two did today," D-16 whimpers at his praise, beaming sunshine, and Orion is awestruck. "Come... sit with me."

They follow their Prime obediently and he relaxes onto one of the lounges, pulling the two cute little miners down on either side of him. They talk--or rather, Sentinel talks and they hang onto his every word, each tucked under one of his arms and nestled close against his chassis--and eventually he pops a bottle of champagne and pours them each a glass. Neither Dee nor Orion have ever had such high quality energon before: it goes down thick and smooth and warm, sending a blast of heat through their little bodies that pool in their tummies and make them start to squirm and feel woozy. Sentinel prompts they drink the whole thing, each of them, and by the time they're done they're gasping and swaying. So strong! Too strong!

The Prime's huge blue servo slides onto D-16's face, admiring his dazed expression. His optics are flickering, shutters at their halfway point, and he's visibly flushed, mouth dropped open and pretty lips parted as he pants. Swaying gently back and forth like that, Sentinel can't resist. He leans down and kisses him, gentle but controlling, and D-16 makes an honest-to-Primes squealing noise.

As soon as Sentinel pulls back, Dee wavers and collapses back against the chaise, optics blown wide even as an uncontrollable smile splits his face. He starts giggling, covering his face and rocking back and forth as euphoria bubbles out of him in uncontrollable, adorable laughter. "Oh my stars-" he gushes. "Oh my stars omistars omistars wow...!" His first kiss has left him breathless and elated, barely able to speak, worship and the greatest joy imaginable shining in his optics.

Sentinel Prime has them, both of them, in his suite, over and over and over again. They're both virgins, have never touched another mech or been touched in turn, and their leader takes great revelry is breaking their seals. Fucking their tight little valves until they're wailing and cumming in his lap, sobbing in ecstasy into his neck, clumsily kissing at his plating and swearing that they adore him, they love him, please more, more, more! He frags them on the furniture, against the wall, on the floor, even in the hot tub. He has them both on their knees in front of him on the lounge, licking and sucking at his spike and pushing each other to lap up drops of his transfluid, asks them to use their mouths on each other while he watches. He even asks them to bear their sparks and they do: he doesn't share his own but he's glad to tease at theirs, and it reduces them to mewling little piles on the floor, twitching and rocking and moaning as they crash through overload after overload. Such beautiful little pets, so eager to please, he could definitely get used to having them around for awhile.

When their time comes to an end they've started to sober up, snuggled against his sides on one of the lounges, still whimpering and panting high on pleasure, excess charge making them woozy and giggly even though the high grade is nearly out of their systems. Airachnid arrives and doesn't even give them a passing glance, informing the Prime that it's time to depart. He sends them back to their home in the mines, promising to see them again soon, just as soon as he returns from his next crusade to the surface.

D-16 and Orion stumble home giggling and shoving each other, still adjusting their armor and poking at the paint transfers spattered all over them. They're euphoric, there's no other word for it, high as a kite on pleasure, on the knowledge that Sentinel Prime wanted them and they were able to satisfy him! No longer virgins and instead claimed by the Prime!

Their batchmates welcome them home with a cacophony of cheers and hugs and jostling--MINERS! In the RACE! Their very own brothers, in the Iacon 5000! And- wait, why are you two all wet...?

They weren't intending to tell everyone, but the way they look at each other and blush and start snickering and struggling to explain is telling enough. Ratchet is already approaching with a wrench to scold them, they know better than to let a moment of excitement cloud their judgement-

"Uh, w-well-"

"Sentinel Prime wanted to-"

"SENTINEL PRIME?!" The entire room screams out in shock at once, before the cheering resumes tenfold. Their batchmates got the attention of THE Sentinel Prime?! Sentinel Prime made love to their batchmates! A couple of miners got the attention and affection of their Prime! If they thought the Iacon 5000 was inspiring that's nothing compared to this: before you know it the entire sector is mining energon at a lightning fast pace and they've hit their quotas before shift is even a quarter of the way done.

Orion and D-16 happily get to work as well, eager to do their best so that when their dashing Prime returns to them, they can tell him about how hard they worked and how much energon they mined and how well everyone is going to eat because of them!

When Sentinel Prime suddenly returns and orders triple shifts, they're surprised. Very surprised. It's not like him at all! Pretty soon the miners are running on no sleep and little fuel, some are injured and being denied time for repair and seek medical treatment. And D-16, despite his best efforts, is starting to fall behind after several weeks of the brutal demands. He's getting dizzy which he attributes to the lack of recharge. His servos keep dropping things even when he's sure he has a tight grip on them. He's nauseous, all the time, and multiple times a shift stumbles away from the rest of his crew to gag and vomit in a corner of whatever energon vein they're currently working in. Orion tries to get him to slow down, to stop, because he's clearly sick and needs medical care, but Dee isn't willing to stop. "Sentinel Prime needs us, Pax! We can't stop now!"

It all comes to a head as they're dragging themselves out of a tunnel with a full load of raw energon to be refined. D-16 suddenly stumbles, clamping one servo over his mouth and running off to the side. Orion hurriedly follows him after making sure Ironhide and Jazz have got the minecart.

"Hey, easy, easy-" he comes to rub his back as his best friend bends over, servos braced on his knees and body already rolling with slow, threatening heaves. He moans that he doesn't want to, he's so sick of purging, it hurts, please Primus, not today! "C'mon, just, let it out. You'll feel better once it's out, Dee."

D-16 groans and hunches over further, arms wrapping around his middle. "No... Primes, please- hgk-!"

"OI!" A miserably familiar voice suddenly bellows behind them, and Orion's sympathetic expression drops to sheer annoyance. Oh, no. "YOU TWO! Whaddo you think you're doin'?!" Darkwing is storming up to them. "Sentinel Prime wants his energon, so GET BACK TO WORK!"

"Darkwing, please," for once Orion is polite, one servo still braced on his friend's back. "D-16's sick, he needs-"

"I don't CARE what you think he needs!" Their superior roars, grabbing them both by the shoulders and forcing then around to face him. "I said, get back to-"

Dee promptly hurls all over the slagger's pedes.

He can't hold it anymore, but he tries, clamping both servos over his mouth even as he purges again. Half-digested energon splashes through his fingers and sprays all over Darkwing's chassis, who roars in disgust and backpedals away from him. Dee crumples to his knees, gagging, both servos planted on the floor before he throws up one final time, emptying his already meager tanks and ejecting a puddle of digestive acid that burns at his throat. It dribbles out of the vents on his neck and nasal ridge, and he sobs. Primus, he feels so sick!

Darkwing's response, naturally, is to grab them both and throw them down to sublevel 50 😌 there they meet B-127, and the plot kicks off, though a bit later than before. They make it to the surface and set out to find the Matrix. The journey is significantly longer with D-16's condition, constantly having to stop so he can rest or purge. Orion, at one point, offers to carry him, and Dee is too miserable to protest. Let's Orion gently hoist him onto his back and promptly passes out with his helm on his shoulder. He's overly warm, Orion notices: feverish, surely a sign that he's getting worse. They need to find the Matrix, soon. Maybe it can help cure Dee's sickness! And if not, well, once energon flows again they won't have to mine, and D-16 will be able to see a doctor as soon as they get home. They'll get him the medicine he needs and he'll be just fine.

When they finally arrive at the Grave of the Primes, D-16 is in bad shape. Shaking like a rust rattler, dry heaving because there's nothing left in his systems to throw up, and very hot to the touch. Orion nor Elita nor B-127 have ever seen a mech in quite such a miserable state, and they're all very worried. Orion sits him down on a rock and tells him to rest, and D-16 just hunches over, helm between his knees and arms folded over his head, the epitome of misery. Whimpering softly and praying to the Primes to please, please, make it stop. Whatever this virus is that's tormenting him, please just make it stop!

Then, they find and awaken Alpha Trion.

The Prime notices Dee's condition. Immediately. He can see it, an invisible aura none but the divine can see: this young mech hosts a precious newspark inside of him. Before he tells them the story of what happened, he opts to examine the little one. He's so young, probably too young to be a carrier yet, but he's undeniably sparked. A few decacycles along.

He tells them what's going on, why D-16 is so grievously ill. "Your sparkling is starving," he tells him seriously. "You are not receiving enough donations. Their protoform is cannibalizing your body, that is the root of your sickness. Where... is the sire? He or she should be caring for your needs."

All four of them are staring at Alpha Trion with their mouths open. D-16 is carrying?! He's pregnant?! But who-

Elita one punches Orion in the face as hard as she can, sending him sprawling into the dirt with a cry of surprise. "OW! What the-"

"You slagger!" She plants one pede on his chassis and presses down til she hears metal creak and he goes 'ow ow ow!'. "It was you, I know it was you! Who else would be so dumb?! You got him sparked up and haven't been taking care of him?! You worthless deadbeat! I should rip your fragging denta out with pliers! One at a time! I should!"

"Omigosh, Dee," behind her, B-127's voice has gone airy and light in excitement. He comes up to the silver mech's side, grabbing his servo to squeeze. "Congrats, dude! You're gonna be a mom!"

D-16, for his part, is sat there in shock. Shoulders dropped and loose, mouth hanging open, staring at Alpha Trion with his optics so wide they're at liberty to pop right out of the sockets and need recalibrating. "I'm..." his voice is barely above a whisper, shaking servos drifting toward his tummy. "You mean- I'm-?!"

He's starting to smile, joy bubbling up in his chest. Excitement, too. And terror. And a million other things that he can't name because he's too shocked, but suddenly despite how sick he feels he can't help but start to laugh. Delight blooms in his chest and forces it's way out of his throat as he starts to giggle and chuckle, and before long he's doubled over holding his stomach and laughing with tears of joy streaming down his face.

"I'm- I'm having a-" he jumps up to run over to Orion, shooing Elita off of him and throwing his arms around his friend. "Pax I'm sparked! I- I can't wait to tell Sentinel, he's gonna be so excited!"

"Sentinel?" Alpha Trion's voice goes cold and harsh behind them.

"Yes! Oh- Oh yes, Sentinel Prime, he-"

"He is NO PRIME!" The old mech bellows, and all four of them turn to look at him in confusion. "He does not bear our name!"

"...WHAT?!"

The grand reveal is even more sour this time around. So, so much more sour. The betrayal runs so much deeper, and D-16 is horrified and sickened. Watching the mech he adores and admires so much bowing to the quintessons and giving away the energon that they worked so hard for. It was already bad, but now? Now, he's carrying that monster's offspring. A sparkling conceived under false pretenses, under coercion, under lies. This baby hadn't been created by love and mutual respect, it has been made by a mech that lied to their faces to get them into his bed, to get access to their bodies to use for his own pleasure however he saw fit.

D-16 feels disgusting. Violated. Worthless. He feels tricked and used and abused. He stares down at his body feeling more nausea already roiling in the deepest pits of his tanks. Sentinel had touched him everywhere. There's not a single inch of space anywhere that's clean of that mech's touch.

No one is surprised when he suddenly folds to his knees and screams. Screams with all the force of his anguish, his shattered trust, his broken and reviled body. Manic, he claws at his chassis with feverbright optics, wailing at them to, "Get it out of me...! GET IT OUT OF ME! I don't want it, I don't- I don't want it, GET IT OUT!"

Orion is at his side in an instant, yelping, "Dee, no! Stop, you'll hurt yourself!" As he forcibly grabs his friend's servos to stop him from tearing himself apart. D-16 shrieks a wordless noise of agony, and then collapses forward onto Orion to begin sobbing violently into his shoulder. Clutching onto him like a lifeline, wailing with all the devestated force he can. Bawling against Orion and falling to pieces, brokenly asking what he's going to do.

never thought about it exactly like this, but the Poppy story is:

I am a licensed therapist who literally markets myself as someone with a superior understanding of relationships, boundaries, mental health and polyamory.

I was in a 4 month online relationship with a woman who was constantly breaking my boundaries, not "showing up", not doing the work, and not doing any of the research I asked her to do.

None of that was enough for me to end the relationship, though. I couldn't, because I was transfixed my her being my FP, I was completely powerless. None of my therapy or skills could possibly have helped me with that at all. It's not MY responsibility.

Also, that woman repeatedly told me that she was not really into sex, which is really upsetting for me because I am hypersexual and identify as a succubus. I made that clear to her all the time. I attempted to tell her at least a dozen times that her expressing herself as having a low sexual interest (and then being ACE) was upsetting to me, but she never changed her mind about it to please me!

What a monster she was! It's not like I could have ended the relationship at any point! I couldn't! Even though I'm a licensed therapist with so much experience and skill, I had absolutely no options but to stay in this situation!

Then, we had this big fight right before this trip I was supposed to come on! Things were really tense for days, and she kept trying to break up with me.

Obviously I wasn't going to LET her just break up with me before we had a chance to meet in person! I already had all of these fantasies about us being together, and I put all of this weight on the importance of this trip! She wasn't allowed to just abandon it just because she had concerns and fears and because we were fighting!! She was just NOT SHOWING UP YET AGAIN! But I wasn't going to let that happen. So, yeah, I asked her to pretend for me and try to act like everything was fine, because it was better for me - but don't you see how manipulative SHE was being?

So we finally get to the hotel, and it's going fine, but I'm on edge the whole time because everything has been so weird, but she seems to not be bringing up the fights, so I guess everything is fine!

So that night, I initiate sex, because of course I do! And she goes along with it. And then I do it again later, and same thing.

So I think, GREAT! EVERYTHING IS GREAT!

She definitely wouldn't have had sex with me if everything wasn't great! Plus, it's not like she ever told me that she wasn't enthusiastic about sex in the past. She NEVER said before that she would really only do sex with me to please me!

So I was SHOCKED when everything went to shit the next day! Zena was just yelling and I then Noeh just tried to leave and finally did!

And then I started to think about it:

Wait... Why did Noeh leave? It couldn't have been because I did anything wrong!! Not me!

She must've only been there for the SEX and to test her feelings! OMG, yes! Looking back it, she was never listening to ME! I told her how important sex was to me, and she WEAPONIZED THAT! She used it as a TEST!

She TOOK ADVANTAGE OF ME!

I'm looking back now and realizing that for MONTHS I've been totally manic and out of my mind!

I COULDN'T HAVE CONSENTED!

AND NOEH SHOULD HAVE *KNOWN* THAT!

Me, the licensed therapist, couldn't even see it until now, but it's NOEH'S RESPONSIBILITY. Sure I've been posting videos and having relationships and giving my opinions - those are all still FINE! None of that was a problem, of course!

And Zena, who knows me better than anyone, ALSO couldn't see it! But it's NOEH'S RESPONSIBILITY!

But it's not like I'm saying we might have blind spots or be wrong or our opinion is an issue! No way! We're still the smartest people who know everything and won't listen to anyone's opinions!

We are always 100% right about everything but this one thing!

Because anyone who can't see the truth is an apologist. And the truth is clearly that:

This person I'd only known for 4 months online, during which I was apparently manic the ENTIRE TIME, obviously took advantage of their knowledge of me, and used that knowledge to just get something from me and move on!

If she didn't want to have that sex, or wasn't sure about it, it was 1,000% her responsibility to say it and turn me down. Sure, I'd told her a dozen times how much that would devastate me, but that's HER problem.

That's R*PE plain and simple.

2024 goals - March progress

I can't claim I focussed on my goals at all this month... Idk I don't really see them as goals either they're just kinda.. things I keep some track of. I know I said this last month but I think April will be more productive because this month for sure spring will feel like it's here (we're still waiting for the trees to turn green, it snowed A Lot last week, just to give you an idea of the situation).

Anyway love and light below are some reflections on my specific goals :)

Get back into a reading routine

I've kept on reading Orlando by Virginia Woolf and I only have 35 pages left. I'm still not consistent at all with it, I read a bit about once a week. I find it so hard to reach for the book instead of my phone, it's annoying because I really do enjoy the book.

Meet friends at least once a month

I've had some good hangouts this month, mostly others that have been reaching out. I'm happy because one of my friends came to my boyfriend's show and was so excited about it and I'm happy they are bonding! In April I have plans to go visit a friend who lives in another city (one of my closest friends who will also meet my boyfriend for the first time) and I'm also planning to reach out to another friend!

Do the damn exercises for my back :(

I did them like.... 2,5 times :( not good at all. And my salsa classes stopped in the middle of the month and I've decided to not continue so it's not looking perfect. Hopefully with the extra light we get now I can have more energy to do them in the evening.

Get better at Portuguese

I signed up for the Portuguese course at uni <3333 Hopefully I'll get in and I'll be able to do that in the fall. I studied in some way 11 days of the month which isn't nothing!! Started doing Clozemaster and I really like it, especially on the writing mode (let's be honest, all my knowledge in Romance languages makes the "choose from these four options" a walk in the park for me). It's super annoying that the free plan only allows you 30 words a day. What I really should do is produce more, write little texts and stuff.

Get my license

We're still waiting for the permit to be able to practice driving with my boyfriend but it's taking a while... I've had 2 lessons though (was supposed to have 3 but one got cancelled). I don't know that I feel that I'm getting any better but I do really have to start studying the theory. It would be nice to talk to my instructor also and ask him what he thinks a reasonable time frame would be for me. In my head I'm seeing myself getting the license during the summer but who knows.

Get back into the habit of going on walks

I have been on some walks this month but more in the sense of I am somewhere and walk a bit instead of taking the closest subway. But I mean now with the change of the hour and the warmer weather I for sure am seeing myself going on more walks!

Go to the theatre more (youth discount my beloved) and also to some museums!

I went to the Maurizio Cattelan exposition at the Modern art museum because my friend had a free entrance with her job. I actually really liked it! Unfortunately I was in a bit of a hurry so I didn't have time to meander or look at the other expositions but I would love to go back! They do the free entry on Friday evenings so I think I might go!

Improve my sleeping schedule

I actually compiled my statistics for this this month (yay!). Slept an average of 7h15 but if we just look at work nights it's 6h20. Not great... It's not something I've paid particular attention to this month but I think I should. I think a goal could be maybe sleep before 1 more often (this month it was 3 times hihihi ma come siamo messi raga).

So, to preface this, I just want to say that this is going to be US based as US based mental healthcare is what I have most experience with utilizing as I've lived here most of my life and I work in mental healthcare as well. I'm sorry I can't give information about other countries but I don't want to give inaccurate information.

Mental healthcare is hard. It is demonized and stigmatized and figuring out where to start is difficult. And even when we find resources, even when we do find that starting point, taking that first jump to ask for help is hard. Asking for help is hard especially if we've spent years being told to toughen up or that other people have it worse or, my personal favorite, it's all in our heads. Of course it's all in our heads, it's in the name!

Our brains can get sick just like any other part of our body and it's nothing to be ashamed of but people make it a shameful thing so... where do we start?

First of all, we need to talk about the difference between a psychiatrist and a psychologist/therapist. A psychiatrist is a medical doctor who specializes in mental healthcare and the diagnoses and treatment, including writing prescriptions, of mental illnesses/disorders. A psychologist/therapist is a counsellor who has been trained in talk therapy to help you manage mental health symptoms and improve how you handle stress as well as help you process trauma. There are some states where psychologists can now write prescriptions for medications and you don't need to see a psychiatrist. I don't know have a full list of those states so I suggest you looking up that information for yourself but I will always advocate for seeking out a trained medical professional for medication first and foremost.

With all that being said... let's get to finding a professional for ourselves.

Psychology Today is a great resource and I wish I could tell you how much I utilize this magazine/website in my every day life at work but you would get bored and hate me. But I love them SO MUCH.

They have separate searches for what you're looking for including Psychiatrists and Therapists. They also have searches for telehealth, treatment centers and support groups and while those are not the ones I'll be focusing on they are also super duper helpful.

So, you go into those searches and you input your zipcode and hit search and it brings up the results. But what's really cool and makes this better than just Googling professionals in your area is the way you get to tailor the search results for yourself and it looks like this:

This helps you find somebody you are comfortable working with because if you are not comfortable working with somebody, you will not make progress in your mental healthcare and that is unfair to you.

You can choose what kind of issues you want your therapist to specialize in handling (the list is extensive, I won't be including it here for brevity purposes). You can choose what insurances they take if you are one of the fortunate people in this country to have health insurance and therapy is covered by said insurance. You can choose the gender of the therapist (male, female and nonbinary are options). You can choose the type of therapy they are specialized in administering (CBT, DBT and EMDR are three very popular and common types but they are not the only types nor do they work for everybody). You can choose their age range. And my favorite: Price range. Because price is a big factor in why a lot of us don't seek out mental health help. They have four options, it looks like this:

I always choose less than $90 and that sliding scale option. That means it's based on your income level. Do not ever feel ashamed of clicking the sliding scale option. You can also look for places who have interns working for them. They're in their last semester of training before they start the licensing process and they're usually a lot cheaper. For example: I started with my therapist when she was an intern and she was 20$ per session for me on a sliding scale.

Then there's the more tab where you really get to narrow your search down between ethnicity served, sexuality, language spoken and the faith of the therapist. It looks like this:

Because, again, if we're not comfortable with who we're working with, then we're not going to do very well in our healing. Not only do we want professionals who know what they're doing, we want professionals who empathize and sympathize with us as well, who might have experience with what we've gone through ourselves. Tailoring the search results and finding a professional who meets you where you are is so important.

Then comes the really hard part of actually making phone calls but, honestly, email works great too if you have anxiety about talking on the phone. I reached out to a few therapeutic practices and just put myself on a couple of waitlists. It cost nothing and they move super fast. When you come off a waitlist and find a therapist you're comfortable working with, just politely email the other organizations and let them know so they can move somebody else up on their list. I have never experienced a professional being mad nor have I ever been mad at somebody taking themselves off the waitlist. Mental health professionals want you to get the help you need and the help you're comfortable with and if you found somebody before somebody else can help you, that is fantastic and we will genuinely wish you the best. Because we want the best for you.

It all started in the comments to this post. Lovely @lovebillyhargrove came up with this amazing headcanon (go read it) about Steve having hots for Billy's Camaro, and we talked about how he would be itching to get a ride in it.

And it inspired me to this little something.

Steve needs a plan. It's not like he can just go to Hargrove all 'Hey, I like your car, mind giving me a ride?' Holy shit, the only thought makes him red in the face.

But when Steve wants something, he gets it, period. No other options. And he really, really does want it.

So naturally, he's sitting in the Science class and writing in his notebook. The teacher is probably surprised he's being so diligent. He would be even more surprised if he saw what exactly Steve's writing though.

'How to make That Asshole (B.H.) give me a ride in his car'

What? After all, making plans is, like, science too. Right? And anyways, this shit goes the same as the actual class - Steve has literally zero idea about anything. The said B.H. sits next to him, staring in front of himself (no way Steve would believe the dickhead is actually paying attention) and not even looking at Steve.

He stabs his pen into the empty page, doodles on it and grows more and more frustrated, when suddenly-

"What was the last phrase? Lemme see, Harrington," the notebook is snatched from Steve's hands before he can do anything.

"Give it back!" Steve tries to return his notes, but Hargrove stares at the page, the smirk blooming bigger and bigger.

Steve wants to punch him.

"Oooh! Who do you want to give you a ride, king Steve?" Hargrove all but purrs.

"Not you!" Steve blurts out, cheeks and ears crimson red, and the teacher gives him a stern look.

"Mmm? Who's B.H. then?"

And Steve panicks, okay? He barely remembers his own name at this point, so it's pure miracle he manages to come up with a fitting name the teacher called out at the start of the class.

"Benny...Benny Hanneman!"

He's hot in the face, and hell if he knows shit about who this Benny Hanneman is.

Unfortunately, he gets a chance to find out soon enough.

"Hey, king Steve."

Steve stops on his way to the Beamer in the parking lot. And of course, there's Hargrove, smug as hell. There's another guy next to him though - some quiet kid, looking between them all unsure. Steve vaguely remembers him from Science class. Uh-oh. He has a bad feeling.

"Benny here," Hargrove is basically beaming. "Kindly agreed to give you that ride you've been dreaming of, Stevie. Right, Hanneman?"

Benny Hanneman nods enthusiastically, tiptoeing on the spot.

"Uh," Steve breathes out weakly. "Really? Yay..."

And then he sees it. The. Car. Steve's not sure what model it is, the only thing he's sure it looks like is a nightmare.

"Only the best for your royal highness," Hargrove opens the door for him, and Steve imagines how he punches all the teeth out of this stupid syrupy smile.

He just glares and shuts the door, trying to get comfortable in the passenger seat.

"Um," Benmy Hanneman pipes from the driver seat. "I've only recently managed to get my license..."

Steve buckles in.

Turns out, Steve was wrong when he called the car a nightmare. The car and the driver in combination make the biggest, scariest, most horrible nightmare ever existed. They're driving for just a few minutes (eternity) and Steve's getting more and more carsick with every move. Which he hasn't felt since being, like, eight! And to make it even worse, there's the blue Camaro following them. Steve honestly, really tries his best to play it cool and not give Hargrove - who must be the devil himself - his sick satisfaction. But his body has its own opinions.

"Oh! Here, stop here."

"Right...here??" Benny arches his brows.

"Yeah yeah, near this tree. I just. I remembered that I forgot something at school."

"We can turn and..."

"No!!!" Steve yelps, probably scaring the shit out of the driving kid, but he has, like, less than zero fucks to give. "Just, just stop here."

He stumbles out, mumbling a rather sincere 'thanks', which is for letting him out of that hell, and plops down right in the grass, leaning back on the tree and trying to normalize his balance and breathing.

Soon enough, there's a shit-eating grin in front of him.

"How's the ride, Harrington? Fit the royalty?"

Steve grits his teeth, trying to make his voice sound not as whiny as he feels.

"Yeah. It was," he hiccups and blushes immediately. "Unforgettable."

Hargrove lets out this growling chuckle of his, somehow making Steve squirm, and holds out his hand. Steve clutches it without any thought.

"C'mon. Let the original B.H. give you the ride of your life."

Steve gapes at him, blinking and still holding Hargrove's warm hand.

"You...what?!" apparently, there's no point in lying anymore. "You knew all this time?!"

Steve's gonna kill him. No. Make it worse. He's gonna make him get a ride in Benny Hanneman's car.

Hargrove just jerks him up, sending Steve stumbling right into his firm, hot to the touch body. Um. Steve's already too close, when there are lips ghosting over his ear, purring all smug.

"All you had to do was ask nicely, pretty boy."

I wish translations of anime and visual novels and so forth followed more of the same patterns as scholarly translations of out-of-copyright stuff. Less "our group has claimed translating this, you go do something else", more aggressive efforts to cover as many points as practical along the Pareto frontier defined by the various tradeoffs in translation.

Like, look at the variety of translations you can find for something like the Iliad. Multiple new translations coming out via the big academic publishers each decade, each trying to optimize on different axes, and that's before you get into the less formally-published ones like MC Lula's sadly-probably-abandoned rap translation.

The Iliad is an outlier, of course. Most works, even relatively-popular ones, don't get nearly that many translations. But it's an outlier which is indicative of the culture of the people doing the translating. It's very much a multi-translation optimization process, creeping increasingly closer to optimality on whichever axes the different translations are optimizing on, one translation at a time.

(Or, sometimes, ceasing to creep forward on some axes; when I read the Iliad for school, we were using Lattimore's translation from all the way back in 1951, which was apparently still the state of the art on whatever axes my school cared about as of 2015.)

But fan-translation, as practiced on the modern internet, doesn't seem to work that way. Nor does official translation, for those works which get licensed. Among the fans, there's this terrible cultural norm wherein it's considered rude to translate something another group has already done. (Or, sometimes, even something that they've just said they're going to do eventually, judging by the shreds of drama I've seen around the translation of the Tsukihime remake.) Among the official licensors, there seems to be a pattern where, when a new company gets the license for a given work, they might do a new translation (or they might not), but licensors want exclusivity and so new companies getting the license is a relatively-rare occurrence.

It's probably hard to fix this on the officially-licensed-translation end, given economic practicalities. The licensors have minimal incentive to put out many translations, since each translation is expensive to produce and most people will buy only one; the licensors have incentive to continue getting exclusivity deals, for the same reason; and the licensors have incentive (and legal authority) to suppress fan-translations, also for the same reason.

But I'd really like to see a change towards a more Iliad-like direction on the fan-translation end. Instead of a single group squatting on each work irrespective of what their translation is optimizing for and how well it does at that, let all sorts of different translations propagate and slowly build out to the Pareto frontier of translation-optimality. Let one group do a thoroughly-literal translation with extensive footnotes for purposes of in-depth analysis, and one do a fully localized rice-balls-are-jelly-donuts-now translation, and one do a new attempt at a middle-ground translation aimed at Paradigmatic Anime Fans because they think they can do better than the somewhat-mediocre one of that sort which a different group previously did, and so forth, all working separately on their individual projects but working together towards the shared goal of giving people more and better options for how to consume whatever story they're translating.

(Or maybe the story languishes in obscurity and ends up with just one translation anyway. Making a good translation takes a lot of time and a lot of effort, after all. But I'd much rather have stories do so for the good reason of limited translator-capacity, rather than for the bad reason of [weirdly exclusivity-demanding cultural norms among the translators].)

Bucky didn't get to feel like a hero often.

Of course, he had saved the world along with the Avengers and was still fighting together with Sam for the sake of humanity, but it just wasn't the same. It felt like he was repaying a debt he owed to the world.

He owed nothing to you, the girl who ran onto him on a street at night and pleaded to help. There was a man chasing you, Bucky saw him. Judging by the way he moved and the abnormal expression he wore, it was easy to guess he was under some drugs.

"Wait inside." Bucky said, pressing his intercom key to the panel and opening the door to the hallway.

You got there immediately, but looked at him with deep concern in your eyes. In your mind you were leaving some man you didn't even know to deal with an ax-crazy who was after you. You didn't know who Bucky was, what he was capable of. Were you worried about him? Maybe you were. Bucky thought it was odd.

It didn't take him long before the man was there, throwing punches at him and acting like an enraged bull. When among other things Bucky kicked him in the ass, it rang a bell - he had certainly done it before, though he couldn't remember when or where. It felt strangely satisfying.

Then he stopped, looking at the unconscious body laying on the ground near row of dirty trash bins. He was supposed to give a call to let someone know about it, and he did. 911 could handle this man from now on.

You couldn't see much from the angle the glass door could give you, but when you spotted Bucky coming back he saw relief washing over you. You were happy he returned. It was very, very odd.

"Are you okay?" You asked right away once he opened the door and stepped inside. "Did he hurt you?"

"No."

He watched how you trembled like a leaf. You probably had some nervous disease, but he didn't know much about that. Bucky didn't know much about any diseases at all since he could have none after Zola worked on him.  Did he had to call the ambulance? You didn't look good with your face puffy from tears, eyes all red.

"Thank you so, so much." You said, smiling through tears at him. "You just saved my life. Thank you. Thank you."

Although you were still crying, the way you looked at him made him feel better. There was so much appreciation written on your face. You kept saying lots of words of thanks, and Bucky suddenly felt like a savior. It wasn't like no one had thanked him before, but never like that. Never so sincere. Desperate, even.

He motioned you to come to his apartment because Bucky wanted you to keep looking at him like that. Besides, you were still trembling. Where would you go like that in the middle of the night? It wasn't wise, he thought.

"Oh no, I forgot my handbag there." You mumbled, pressing your hand to your forehead. "My phone, my wallet."

"Where?" Bucky cocked his head to the side.

"In that goddamn club where this guy and his friends were." It brought you to tears, and Bucky reached for the napkin box.

"I will call there."

There it was. That look on your face as if you saw a halo of light surrounding his figure. Bucky liked that. He liked that very much.

He took his phone out of his pocket and stared at the screen, trying to remeber what the pattern he had to use. Sam was telling him something about Google maps.

It turned out to be quite easy except the fact that his huge fingers didn't press the write buttons all the time. How did people get used to type so fast? Well, maybe he had to buy a different phone, a bigger one. His was too little.

"... yes. She think she might have forgotten it on the bar counter. There are her wallet, cellphone and set of keys."

You were lucky the security had found your belongings quickly. It seemed like nothing was stolen.

"Can she pick them up tomorrow? Yes. Thank you."

He saw the surprised look on your face. You thought you were going to go, but he didn't want you leaving his apartment just now. He wanted to feel like a hero a little bit more.

"You said his friends were still there. It's not safe to go now." He explained calmly and saw the realization hit you. Then you wiped the tears away again, saying you didn't even have the money to get a taxi to take you home. You didn't live close, and walking to the other side of the city at night seemed like a horrible option. You were hopeless.

Bucky took you to the kitchen and took out a box of tea Sam brought him a month ago - it was huge, a dozen of different tea bags inside. Going throw them, he took out a camomile one. He remembered his mother saying something about it calming people down. You seemed like you needed it.

"You can stay here for the night." He said, pushing a big white cup with hot tea closer to you. Then he filled his own, thinking you might feel odd drinking all by yourself. Having a little company was nice.

You gawked at him with your mouth open but took the cup, nonetheless. You just couldn't believe someone was so nice to you, he thought. People wasn't often nice to him either, so Bucky could understand your hesitation.

"It's not safe out there." He said, looking at the window hidden behind the curtains. "Those guys are probably looking for his friend. If they caught a glimpse of you in a taxi, they might remember its license plate and find out where you live. If you walk by yourself, it will be even worse."

It sounded logical to him. You thought so too, probably, as you started shaking again and he had to reach out to touch your hand.

"Don't worry. They don't know you're here."

You nodded, swallowing your tears and gulping down the tea.

"I'm so sorry for all the trouble. I don't want to impose, truly." You muttered, keeping your head low and staring into the cup. Bucky thought your hair looked pretty in the dim light of the room.

"It's okay. It's not your fault." He said and made a sip of his tea.

He didn't remember when was the last time someone had tea with him in the kitchen. Sometimes he went with Sam to some bars together to have a couple of beers, but it didn't feel the same. Having a woman in his apartment was just as odd. Wanda came to help him settle in for a few times, and once Natasha visited him, too, but no other woman had ever been here. No other woman looked at him like he was a hero to her.

"I will sleep on the couch." He said and pointed to the fridge. "You can have whatever is there."

"Thank you, but you're too kind." You shook your head. "I've already brought you enough trouble to make you uncomfortable in your own home."

Bucky remembered the way Sam behaved when he saw a woman he liked and curled his lips a little, his face lit up when he smiled at you. Apparently, it worked as you immediately relaxed.

"It's no trouble at all. I'm glad you asked for my help." It was true. "I don't like when something like this happens."

"I still can't believe one time I got to go to the club I was chased out by some psycho." You sighed, making one more sip of the tea you seemed to like. "Guess I'm never coming out of my apartment again."

He let out a chuckle, still thinking of the way Sam would handle this conversation. Actually, he silently agreed that you shouldn't be coming to places like that nightclub. Staying home sounded like a much better option.

For some reason an image of you living with him appeared in his mind. You were wearing a short blue robe and cooking something in the kitchen while laughing at something he said. He could feel the delicious smell of food you were making for dinner. The empty shelves in the room were filled with photos, books, porcelain figurines, and other things that you deemed important to keep there. While you were busy in the kitchen, he was setting up a new wardrobe for you because all your clothes couldn't fit in his old one. He could still hear your lovely laugh when he made another joke about Sam and his issues with women.

Bucky admitted it would be nice.

"It will get better." He said, unsure whether he was talking to you or rather himself. "You don't have to worry about anything.""I'm truly sorry for everything."

"Don't be. Sometimes stuff like that just happens. It's a shame, but that's the way things are"

You nodded at his words and finished your tea, smiling a little into your cup. Bucky felt his chest getting warm for no reason and then tried to remember where he stored anesthetics - you were so nervous you would have difficulty sleeping tonight. If he really was such a good man like you imagined him to be, he ought to help you, right?

June 2021 Roundup

It's been a month of highs and lows. Every year my city holds a cabaret festival, and I've seen some truly amazing acts over the years - including Lea Salonga, Kristin Chenoweth, and Indina Menzel. This year's Artistic Director was the great Alan Cumming, and although due to covid he didn't quite get to curate the program he wanted to, the opening night Gala was still a highlight, as was Alan's DJ set at the pop-up Club Cumming afterwards, where there was much singing at the top of my lungs and dancing to pop anthems and theatre tunes. At one point Alan, dressed in a onesie and perched on the shoulders of a man wearing only sparkly short shorts, was carried around the dance floor while Circle of Life blared. Reader, I was delighted.

I was also able to see his solo show Alan Cumming Is Not Acting His Age, which was hilarious and damn, he can sing!

As for the low, I was meant to fly to Sydney for the weekend to see Hamilton, a trip I have been looking forward to for almost a year, but had to be cancelled because of a covid outbreak and border closures. The tickets have been rescheduled, but I'm still kind of bummed about it (while completely appreciating the need for covid safety, especially when our vaccine rollout has been completely botched by our incompetent, corrupt federal government)

Anyway.

Reading

The Hundred and One Dalmations (Dodie Smith) - With all the bewilderment over Disney's Cruella, I decided to revisit the original novel which I first read as a kid. It's funny, I had very vivid memories of this book, or rather thought I did, particularly the scene where Roger and Anita have dinner at Cruella's house that fixed in my young mind as utterly disturbing with all this devil imagery and the implication Cruella was literally some kind of demon, which must have been either a) my overactive imagination or b) an illustration, because it's not as clear as I thought it was. The strangeness is there (food with too much pepper, Cruella's inability to keep warm, the walls painted blood red) but not the explicit demon imagery I had remembered. There is a part later in the book recounting the history of Hell Hall and the rumors of Cruella's ancestor streaking out of the place conjuring blue lightening, but clearly child me was reading far more into the book than was on the page.

But I still wish they'd gone with this version of Cruella's backstory, because to me an aristocratic, ink-drinking, heat-obsessed, possibly-demon spawn, high camp villain is more interesting and rings far more true than plucky punk against the establishment.

Smith clearly had Facts About Dalmations to share, and she does really craft a wonderful animal-based story that the Disney animated film is largely faithful to. Key differences include: Roger's occupation (he doesn't have to pay tax because he wiped out government debt somehow?!?), Pongo's mate and the puppy's mother is called Missis, Perdita is another dalmation who acts as a kind of doggie wet nurse, Roger and Anita both have Nannies who come to live with them (Nanny Butler and Nanny Cook), Cruella is married to a furrier (who changed his last name to de Vil). Also odd, on her first description Cruella is described as having "dark skin" but later in the novel her "white face" is mentioned, so I'm chalking it up to 50's descriptors not having the same meanings they do today.

The Duke and I (Julia Quinn) - After being just whelmed by the tv series, I wasn't really planning on reading the books, but I saw this on the top picks shelf at the library and damn, the top picks shelf is irresistible. This is very much Daphne's book (and I had known each in the series dealt with the different sibling) so many of the characters and much of the plot of the show is absent, as are some of the more baffling elements of the show like the Diamond of the First Water nonsense, which I always thought was a strange character choice in that it stacks the deck for Daphne when her character arc is better served as somewhat of an underdog (in her third season, the kind of girl who is liked but not adored), and the Prince subplot which was always far too OTT even for soapy regency romance.

It's a breezy, fun read (that scene excepted), even if the misunderstandings are contrived and I'm never going to take "I'll never have kids because I hate my dad" as a credible romantic obstacle deserving of so much angst.

Faeries (Brian Froud and Alan Lee) - A lovingly detailed and illustrated compendium of Faerie and its inhabitants, drawing from a range of European (but primarily Celtic) folklore and mythology. Froud was a conceptual designer on The Dark Crystal and Labyrinth, and the link is clear in the art as well as the focus on faeries as mysterious but oftimes sinister beings, where human encounters with them rarely end well. Lee has illustrated several publications of Tolkien's novels, and was a lead concept artists for Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings and Hobbit trilogies, and there is a touch of Middle Earth here as well, or rather the common inspiration of the old world. A useful resource for my novel!

Watching

The Handmaid's Tale (season 4, episodes 4-8) SPOILERS - So when I last wrote about this show in the Roundup, I was complaining it wasn't going anywhere. Well, I'm happy to be wrong because they finally changed things up with June finally escaping to Canada. That part of the plot following the survivors and their trauma has always been far more compelling than Gilead, and so it was a welcome development even if I side-eye some of the choices (none of these characters is seeing an actual licensed therapist why?).

This show has always been difficult to watch given the subject matter, and that has not changed after the shift in power dynamics. I will give the show credit for showing a broad range of trauma responses, from Moira wanting to move on and not let it consume her, to June, a ball of rage and revenge on a downward spiral, to Emily, trying to follow Moira's path but being drawn to June's, to Luke, trying his best but utterly unequipped to deal with what is happening.

But it is very hard to watch June go down this path - raping her husband (I concede the show perhaps didn't intend for it to be rape, but that's what is on screen and framing it as just "taking away Luke's agency" doesn't change that), wishing death on Serena's unborn child, and orchestrating Fred's brutal murder by particulation, then holding her own daughter still covered in his blood and it getting smeared on Nicole's face (an unsubtle metaphor in a series full of unsubtle metaphors).

There are interesting questions being asked of the viewer, and the show (perhaps rightly) not giving any answers. I can certainly appreciate the catharsis of Fred getting what he deserves even if I personally find the manner of it horrifying, but where is the line between justice and revenge, is revenge the only option when justice is denied, when does a trauma release become cyclical violence/abuse - the show is, for now, letting the viewer decide.

Soul (dir. Pete Docter and Kemp Powers) - In a world full of remakes/reboots/sequels, Pixar is perhaps the lone segment under the Disney umbrella committed to original content. However, there does seem to be a Pixar formula at work directed to precision tugging the heart strings, and some of the film feels like well-trod ground. On the other hand, it's hard to criticise the risk of centering a kids film around the existential crisis of a middle aged man, even with the requisite cutesy elements (and of course, the uncomfortable pattern of yet another film where the black lead character spends a great deal of the runtime in non-human form - herein, an amorphous blob or a cat). But the animation is stunning, it successfully did tug my heart strings, and the design of the Great Before and the Jerrys is original and fun.

RuPaul's Drag Race Down Under - Drag Race is somewhat of a guilty pleasure for me, since I generally don't watch reality shows, and this is something I really enjoy even if I'm not invested in the fandom (which like many fandoms can be very yikes). This year it was time for the Australian/New Zealand (Aotearoa) queens to show their stuff, although it's been met with mixed reactions. Covid restrictions didn't allow for guest judges, relegating them to mere cameos via video calls, and its clear that Ru and Michelle really don't quite get all the cultural nuances - Aussie judge Rhys Nicholson was however always delightful. But it wouldn't be Australia without a racism scandal, with the great disappointment of the two queens of colour eliminated first, and one queen having done blackface in the recent past yet making it all the way to the top four.

In the end, the only viable and deserving winner was last Kiwi standing Kita Mean, and it was pure joy to see her get crowned. I do hope they fix the bugs and indeed do another season to better showcase AU/NZ talent.

Writing

A far more productive month - to try and get out of my writing funk I had a goal to try and write every day, even if it was only 100 words. While I didn't quite achieve a consecutive month, I did get a pretty good average, at least got something posted and two others nearly there.

So if this too close to Sam advises, feel free to ignore, you just strike me as competent. I've been living in poverty my whole life. I just finished graduate school in a pretty lucrative health field, and once I'm licensed, I'm going to be making more in a month than I have in a year. Like a lot of poor people, I don't have a lot of experience saving or managing money at all. Where can I start to learn this stuff so I don't accidentally, like, buy a yacht or something? Do you have any tips?

Okay we’ll get into this but before we do, if you ever do accidentally buy a yacht, please document that story for tumblr, accidentally buying a yacht sounds amazing. :D

So here’s the thing: I am not intimately acquainted with wealth management because I am also quite poor, but I do study the wealthy, and I manage my own money, so I have a few pro tips. 

The first is: there are people whose job it is to help you with this. Financial advisors will often even meet with you for free to give preliminary advice. Your bank probably offers financial advisors, your retirement administrator definitely does, or you can find an independent one (here’s a good guide to how to do that, including what kinds you can speak to). Tell them you’re about to have a significant wealth increase and you want to make sure that you’re planning for your future, but you’d also like to be able to spend some disposable income now. Because if you are going to be significantly wealthy soon, Anon, you should enjoy that shit while you’re young. 

The most common advice around sudden wealth is twofold: 

One, pay down/pay off any debt you have. Why let that loom over you? Get your credit balances to zero, pay off your student loans. I’m sure you know as someone coming from poverty that debt is often unavoidable, but if it can be avoided, it should. You want a credit history, so if you don’t have a credit card AT ALL now is the time to get one, put a small charge on it monthly, and pay it off monthly, but if you have debt of any kind, pay that shit off. 

Two, throw a ton of money into your retirement savings. Especially if your company matches it, pay heavily into retirement. It’s tax-free for you now, and if you have a financial emergency later, you can lean on your retirement account to get you through it. Give yourself a healthy income to live on, but be sure you’re putting plenty into retirement, and know where that money is going. Get your financial advisor to explain your retirement investment options, or learn them yourself (as I did) and diversify your retirement portfolio so that the money is in lots of different kinds of investments. 

Once you’ve done these things, you can start getting more complicated with your money; looking into investing, various forms of saving, philanthropy, the whole nine yards. But that can also wait -- you don’t have to become financially super-literate overnight. Pay off your debt, start saving, and then look around and see where you’re at. 

My personal advice, and this is subjective, is not to worry too much about “growing” your wealth. A lot of people are like “Well I have this pot of money, how do I turn it into a MUCH BIGGER pot of money?” and while that’s an option, it can be dangerous, especially when you don’t yet have a good cushion to fall back on. There are a lot of shady people out there who want to offer you unbelievable investments, amazing once-in-a-lifetime opportunities, and then take your money and run. If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. You have time. You don’t need to be a millionaire overnight. Once I started having a tiny drip of disposable income, I started putting it into an account with Betterment, which offers a respectable but not particularly lucrative 2% return on investments; I also have money in a savings account with a credit union which offers a 6% return, so look into your local credit unions, who not only often give great returns on savings but also reinvest your money in your community. 

And if you’re interested in being financially literate, circle back to your financial advisor, or talk to your bank, and ask them what you can do to be more proactive in managing your wealth. There are classes you can take, or you can spend a month elbows-deep in investopedia, like I did, and there are a myriad of other options as well. 

If you’re interested in being philanthropic, talk to your advisor about tax breaks for philanthropy; that might be down the road for you a bit, but there are family foundations you can set up or donor advised funds that you can invest in which allow you to give within your comfort level of anonymity. There are also “socially responsible” investment funds out there (I invest in one through my retirement account) that are concerned with not supporting fossil fuels, industries with known ties to slave labor, ecologically damaging corporations, etc. There are even Halal, Kosher, and other faith-based investment funds that cater to people who don’t want to put their money into investments that would violate their religious beliefs. 

And of course, as I always advocate: having been poor, hold onto that feeling. Don’t let fear run you, but remember what it was like to be cash-insecure, and share your good fortune generously and graciously. Give charitably without an expectation of return, and give in ways that both fill an immediate need and long-term allow people to come up out of poverty themselves. A high tide ought to raise every ship.
