okay people I am about to RAGE. put your seat belts on and prepare for story time.

so about a week ago, I was procrastinating school work by going down led zeppelin rabbit holes on the internet, as one does, and I came across a vintage Mexican magazine called the Mexico Canta:

I had never seen this before, including the picture of Jimmy, and had certainly never seen an original version of it, and it is such a good picture of his smile. of course we've all seen the other photos from this night, which is may 31, 1969 at the Fillmore East in New York. from there started my journey to find the original version of that photo and on that journey I came across this photo which I posted separately because I had never seen it before.

anyway, I was having no luck finding it and was pretty bummed out. Then the next day, which was Tuesday, I was looking through eBay for a very long time (which I had never done before because I couldn't find the patience) and I came across none other than the actual Mexico Canta magazine FOR SALE and it was literally posted to eBay hours before I found it. here is the picture that was on eBay:

what are the chances!!?!?!?!?!??? AND IT WAS ONLY $14.99

so I of course put a bid on it.

now, disclaimer, I had never used eBay before and I'm 18 and apparently stupid when it comes to these matters. so when placing my "high bid" I thought that meant that was just my bid in general which, I admit, I thought was pretty weird, because I was thinking, "why would they even ask us to pay something other than what the minimum cost is?" So I stupidly --so stupidly-- put $15 as my high bid, just one penny more than the listed price.

the entire week I was watching it, increasingly getting more excited that nobody else had bid on it and slowly realizing what "high bid" actually meant. But I had no idea how to change it and it seemed like nobody was going to bid on it, so I was like 🤷‍♀️

big mistake

Today was the last day of the eBay auction and I've been distracted with work stuff all day and totally forgot to check on it as I had been doing every day this week. When I realized it was past 9:40, I flipped out because I realized it had ended. And when I checked to see the status, somebody had put a bid on it just a few hours earlier for $15 and 50 fucking cents, just one penny more than the minimum bid to counter my high bid. and they got it.😐

Now, I did actually come across the original version of that photo. More or less.

as you can see, it has been edited to the high heavens and back again. but, in some life time, it was in fact the same photo. I have reverse image searched with it and nothing comes up, not even the original source from which I found it. It was evidently uploaded by ledzeppelin.com and then taken down like they did with hundreds of photos (including so many 1972 ones, btw) and all that remains of those photos are Pinterest posts and personally saved versions. very sad indeed.

so that is my story time. I had to tell somebody because I was so mad at myself that I may or may not have shed a tear or two, but I feel better now. Ironically, I was going to make a post about this when I finally got this thing in the mail because again, what are the chances of someone putting this for sale on ebay they day after I discovered it. ugh.

the moral of the story is that I need to learn how to work eBay and that you learn from your mistakes.
