Film Review: Of An Age ★★★★★
Writer-director Goran Stolevski’s achingly romantic Of An Age opened Sydney’s 30th Mardi Gras Film Festival last night ahead of its US theatrical release on Friday, February 17th. Set in Melbourne’s northern suburbs in the summer of 1999, the film quickly establishes a riveting, frenetic pace as high school senior Nikola “Kol” Denić (Elias Anton) receives a distressed early morning phone call…

30 Days of Classic Queer Hollywood
Day 28: James Dean (1931 - 1955)
"No, I am not a homosexual. But I'm also not going to go through life with one hand tied behind my back." - James Dean when asked about his sexuality
James "Jimmy" Dean was one of the most iconic actors of the 20th century. Despite only starring in 3 films (East of Eden (1955), Rebel Without a Cause (1955), and Giant (1956)), he is one of the most recognizable actors of his time.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This lasting fame is largely due to the fact that he died in a car crash in 1955 at the age of 24, just as he was reaching stardom. He became the only actor to receive two posthumous Academy Award nominations for Best Actor. In 1999, the American Film Institute ranked him the 18th best male movie star of the Classic Hollywood.
Tumblr media
James Dean was a bisexual man. He had relationships with many women, including model Pier Angeli and actresses Liz Sheridan, Barbara Glenn, Ursula Andress, and Beverly Wills. He reportedly had private liaisons with men including Marlon Brando, radio director Rogers Bracket, writer William Bast, and director Bob Stevens.
Tumblr media
He was relatively open about this with his costars and coworkers. Nicholas Ray, the director of Rebel Without a Cause (1955), is on record as saying:
"James Dean was not straight, he was not gay, he was bisexual... Jimmy himself said more than once that he swung both ways, so why all the mystery or confusion?"

I'm only 3/4 of the way through it, but so far it's amazingly, wonderfully insane that Victor/Victoria has aged sooo beautifully as an lgbt+ movie? Like oh my godddd there are so many things that I'm losing my shit over here (contains spoilers !) :
Victoria coming out of Toddy's closet wearing that one guy's clothes and then clocking and kicking his ass
Them addressing certain straight men's fear and insecurity around being attracted to drag queens (and inadvertently, trans women)- and the insecurity in their masculinity/the need to prove that they're (straight/masculine/cis) men
Norma having it revealed to her that Victoria's a man and immediately jumping into saying "well, a woman can always tell- no matter hormone shots, etc. there's some things that can't be hidden" (she's literally flat out making shit up cuz that aint the case lmfaoo) I love how in the context of now this feels like they're actively dunking on transphobes
Toddy saying "You know, I think the right woman could reform you, too." right back at Norma when she says it to him
Toddy and Victoria's relationship <33
It's a low asf bar now but an insanely high bar for the time: no transphobic slurs or comments so far???!! Even media from the 2000s often fail this test
Victoria absolutely owning King Marchand every time he's homophobic or obvious about his fragile masculinity :)
Deliberate misgendering framed negatively in a context without trans people or transphobic implications... idk I just think it's neat
Being chill about str8 drag lets fucking go
Textual proof that Julie Andrews is a gay icon and also SO fucking hot in drag
Gay man + straight woman friendship/solidarity in a way that isn't annoying or too stereotypical
The way that Victoria's relationship with both Toddy and King Marchand almost comes off as homoerotic cuz of the drag (wrote this before I got to the part where they were perceived as a gay couple lol)
Honestly you could give Victoria almost any gender/sexuality and this movie would still be a massive slay
"I don't care if you are a man" *kisses her* "I'm not a man" "I still don't care" *they kiss again*
Victoria clocking that one guy multiple times
People thinking King Marchand is gay ("so there was this polish fairy..." and "if a guy like you has the guts to admit he's gay... so can I")
"I said you can stop pretending" "I don't think I want to"
"You know a lot of guys, you'd be surprised [how many of them are gay]."
The convo about men and women not having any particular gendered way of acting, and some women having adams apples ILY <3
That asshole who's trying spy on Victoria getting his umbrella absolutely nuked by the lightning lmaoo

anyone else ever think about how felix catton would look laid in bed with his shaggy hair fanned out on the pillow beneath him while his skin glows golden in hazy morning sun?
(bonus points if oliver is sat on top of him bracketing his waist with his knees lazily running his fingers through felix's hair while they smile at each other all love drunk and drowsy from summer's heat)

elias: i just want to be with you.
young hearts (2024)
#ik the queer coming of age tag hates to see me coming#hey queer coming of age stories was literally my summer research paper i think i'm PASSIONATE ENOUGH ☝🏻🤓#like i kind of get the jokes of “hey you just need the countryside + bikes + gay kids = baam coming of age story 🏳️‍🌈”#but at the same time just notice the nuanced differences#in how these stories despite revolving around similar themes are executed so differently#how the country+culture+class+caste systems are inherently interlinked in these coming out/coming of age stories#for example monster (2023) and close (2022) are the other recent releases that young hearts (2024) is being compared to#and how it seemingly is the happier one and hence better#i respectfully agree to disagree#because all these different endings coincide with the different beginnings of these stories#and it shouldn't matter all that much#instead it should be celebrated imo#young hearts (2024)'s main character elias being scrutinised because well of an apt depiction of internalised homophobia#like yes he's an absolute asshole sometimes#yes he should apologise#but at his core he's just a scared kid#and i felt so much joy seeing his family and friends being such a wonderful support system to him#each beat was caught perfectly#i'm gonna think about this film fondly forever#young hearts 2024#young hearts (2024)#young hearts#young hearts film#elias young hearts#alexander young hearts#elias x alexander#elias x alex#alex young hearts#childhood friends to lovers#coming of age

I just watched such an amazing movie at berlinale: young hearts.
it's a coming of age/coming out story. but the focus is not on older teens or young adults like it's usually the case, rather on kids at the beginning of puberty, around 13 years old. The clumsy "Do you wanna go out with me? yes/no/maybe" phase . Little touches, little kisses, first tries at romance and relationships. and the film really succeeds in capturing these tender first feelings, how wonderful and overwhelming they are, even more so if the person you fall in love with happens to be a boy like yourself.
the movie is set in summer which lends it a certain fleeting ease, sometimes nostalgia. its tone is sweet, even lighthearted, but not without depth. the child actors are really amazing & have great chemistry.
there was a q&a afterwards with the director (seems to be a really likeable, kind person) and he said he basically wanted to make a kid's movie about gay feelings/coming out, something also an 8-year-old could watch. because there are barely any movies out there which attempt to tell these very first queer love stories. and he's so right and it was healing for me to watch the main character getting braver about his affection for the new boy in class scene by scene. it was healing because it's really rare to see love between men/boys depicted as something so innocent and tender as a very first romance. especially now when there is this conservative push to (again) understand queerness as sth inherently sexual if not perverted.
when young hearts hits theatres i hope it gets at least a bit of success. I mean it's rather a small european movie, also feels a bit slice of life genre-wise, certainly no grand blockbuster with big names in it. so I don't know how many people it will reach. but should you have the chance to watch it I highly recommend it it's so feel-good, even reparative

Look, I'm not saying Eternals is the ruler of gay rep in the MCU, but the fact that it actually showed two husbands together in scenes together and even kissing but got nothing versus fans celebrating being queerbaited by Agatha All Along basically...

im convinced people on letterboxd hate fun; i keep going on to review movies and seeing most of the reviews talking about how much the film sucks and they didnt even smile once throughout it, meanwhile i thought it was a silly film that didnt take itself too seriously in the best way
