[ad_1] MBSG’s Manvir Singh in action against OFC’s Isak Vanlalruatfela at Kalinga Stadium, Bhubaneswar on Sunday (PC: ISL) Odisha FC held Mohun Bagan Super Giant to a 1-1 draw at the Kalinga Stadium in Bhubaneswar in tonight’s Indian Super League (ISL) 2024-25 match. The hosts took an early lead with a goal from Hugo Boumous via an indirect free kick, but Manvir Singh equalized with a well-placed header later in the first half. Although both sides created several chances in the second half, neither could find a decisive goal. Odisha started energetically, winning an indirect free kick after Asish Rai’s back pass was picked up by goalkeeper Vishal Kaith. From just six yards out, Hugo Boumous converted to give the hosts a fourth-minute lead. Mohun Bagan immediately pushed forward, nearly leveling in the ninth minute when Dimitrios Petratos aimed directly at goal. Amrinder Singh, however, was quick to deflect the shot. The Mariners continued to press, and Roy Krishna almost scored on a pass from Saviour Gama, but Kaith’s quick reaction stopped the attempt. The visitors’ persistent attacks paid off in the 36th minute when Manvir Singh headed in a Petratos corner to level the score. Manvir timed his leap perfectly, catching the Odisha defense, including Amrinder, off guard. Odisha’s best chance to regain the lead came in the 73rd minute when Ahmed Jahouh’s precise free kick found Amey Ranawade. However, Kaith made an excellent save, keeping the score level despite the Mariners’ struggle to clear. 12 Years Of Pall Of Gloom Lifted: East Bengal Win A Spine-chiller To Take Home Kalinga Super Cup
Tumblr media
Kalinga Super Cup: East Bengal end 12 years of hurt, as they won their first silverware in as many years, defeating Odisha FC 3-2 after extra time at the Kalinga Stadium in Bhubaneswar, in the final of the Kalinga Super Cup, on Sunday. In a nail-biting finish that saw fortunes swing from one end to another for 120 minutes, both teams were reduced to 10 men at one point in time, but they fought like warriors till the end. If East Bengal had the last laugh, then home side Odisha FC would long be remembered for their indomitable spirit to battle it out till the end. The last time the Red and Golds won a major title at the national level was back in the 2012 Federation Cup, when they beat Dempo SC 3-2 after extra time at the Kanchenjunga Stadium in Siliguri. It was a game of two halves, as Odisha took the lead through Diego Mauricio in the first half before Nandha Kumar’s strike and Saul Crespo’s penalty swung the pendulum East Bengal’s way. Odisha centre-back Mourtada Fall was also sent off for a second bookable offence, putting the advantage squarely at East Bengal’s feet. However, Odisha clawed back deep into injury time with an Ahmed Jahouh penalty before East Bengal midfielder Souvik Chakrabarti was given his marching orders in extra time. Cleiton Silva, however, made sure that none of that counted in the end, as he capitalised on a defensive error to score the winner. Despite trials and tribulations about football being a team game, one truth remains in the Kalinga Super Cup – you stop Ahmed Jahouh, and you stop Odisha FC. Souvik Chakrabarti, the man tasked with marking the Moroccan knew it, East Bengal head coach Carles Cuedrat knew it, the 10,121 fans at the Kalinga Stadium in Bhubaneswar knew it. Odisha took the lead when Ahmed Jahouh sent in an accurate aerial ball from the half-way line into the East Bengal box, where Roy Krishna got into a duel with Borja Gonzalez. While the Odisha attacker lost the fight for the ball, his teammate Diego Mauricio was on hand to pounce on the ball and slam it home, minutes before the half-time break. East Bengal, however, were not to give in without a fight. Defender Lal Chungnunga and winger Mahesh Naorem, the two returnees from national team duty, replacing Mandar Rao Dessai and Javier Siverio, respectively. This gave a new dimension to the East Bengal attack, as the width that Mahesh provided the Red and Golds down the left allowed Nandha Kumar to drift into the centre from the right, a combination that worked wonders for them. Minutes after the restart, Mahesh was able to thread a ball through to Nandha behind the Odisha defence, as the latter rounded Odisha keeper Lalthuammawia Ralte and slotted home the equaliser. The momentum was firmly in East Bengal’s favour, and unlike their hosts, the Red and Golds capitalised on it. A penalty shout and 10 minutes later, East Bengal were finally rewarded for their second penalty appeal after Cleiton was brought down by Mourtada Fall, who was booked for his indiscretion. Saul Crespo sent Lalthuammawia the wrong way, putting the Kolkata giants on top. Odisha were to fall further, as their Senegalese centre-back received his second booking just five minutes after the previous one, this time for an elbow on Borja Gonzalez. Fall had to prematurely march off the field, leaving his side down to 10 men and Odisha’s best player, Jahouh, covering for him as a makeshift centre-back. Despite going down to 10 men, the Juggernauts left it till deep in injury time for Mauricio to break free behind the East Bengal defence, as he went tumbling to the earth at the slightest hint of a touch from an onrushing Gill. Jahouh, who was man-marked throughout the game, stepped up for his retribution. Unlike the rest of the game, he had ample time to see which way Gill would leap, and he lazily chipped it in through the centre. We would need another 30 minutes to decide this. As the two sides had to dig deep for the extra 30 minutes, Chakrabarti, who had been brilliant throughout the night, committed his second bookable offence, cancelling out his side’s numerical advantage. More importantly, in the context of the midfield battle, however, Jahouh was now unmarked, with more space and time. The Red and Golds showed more desire when it mattered, however. Six minutes into the second half of extra time, Cleiton pounced on a pass by Lalthuammawia to Narender Gahlot, as the latter was unsuccessful in controlling the ball. The East Bengal captain, although faced with an empty goal, did well to score from a tight angle. Read the full article

[ad_1] Jamie Maclaren with Boria Majumdar (PC: MBSG/X and File Photo) Mohun Bagan’s fans were thrilled when A-League legend, Australian star Jamie Maclaren, joined the team for this season. Though he faced an early setback due to an injury, he made a strong comeback. He has already made history by scoring against both Mohammedan Sporting Club and East Bengal respectively. As he gears up for the game against Odisha FC on Sunday, he had a freewheeling chat with RevSportz’s Chief Editor, Boria Majumdar. Maclaren shared his thoughts on scoring in the derby, his connection with Mohun Bagan fans, his love for Indian food, and more. Here are some highlights from the interview:  Your thoughts on that goal and scoring in the Derby? I missed the pre-season, a serious injury caused me a lot of pain, and I did not think I was going to play the first maybe 10 games. So, to know that I was playing in these big fixtures and you could see the fans around the streets talking about the Derby, the 19th. Obviously, I was getting to a point where I was fit enough to play, and the week before I scored against Mohammedan with my head, which is something that has caused me problems. Look, it is a fixture that is the biggest in India, one of the biggest in Asia. I watched it previously before I signed for this football club, and it was just an amazing feeling to be part of a Derby game. But to get us off the start with a nice goal… many more Derbies to come. Why Mohun Bagan? – Well, their history speaks for itself, but also I know (of) a few players that have played here in the past, not only now, but in previous years, and they are the most successful. I think something that I did in Australia was win trophies and I want to be a part of a team that is always consistently, striving for greatness and that is why I have come here. It is a huge club, huge organisation, and there is no better feeling than walking into a stadium, our home games, whether we are playing a big Derby or playing a smaller game or whatever. In our minds, it is always about winning and having a standard. The fans have a high expectation and that is something that comes with getting nearly 30,000 plus fans, every single game is important. That is what I want to do. I want to play. For the Latest Sports News: Click Here   What do you think of the young footballers in India? Perhaps, you can play the role of a mentor? Is that something you believe will be one of your legacies? – Look, I hope so. But there are also some young players in this squad that from day one have been asking me questions. For example, young Suhail, after the first month, was asking me because I was not training. But I saw the way he was moving in some drills and I said, too many times, you are not going towards the front post, you are a striker. And he started to ask me more and more questions. When you have players that want to learn off you, but I am also learning off the quality. I have come here and I have seen the level. I have seen guys that play in the national team. They have got 50 odd caps for their country. It is special and there is no better feeling than knowing that you can improve, but also you can help others improve. Thoughts on the fans? – Unbelievable. I have not played in an atmosphere (like this) since I played at the World Cup against Argentina. It was just so loud from minute-one-to-minute-90. Just a fantastic atmosphere. The big reason why I came here is because there is always an expectation to win, to win trophies, to perform, to entertain. But also the way they show their love for football, I have not seen too many countries like that. The passion and the noise, similar to a game in South America, like a River Plate or Boca Juniors and the flares going off when I scored the goal and just the goosebumps. The fans are giving me goosebumps and I am sure that is why a lot of players come here and are very proud to wear the jersey. Jamie Maclaren for Mohun Bagan (PC: MBSG/X) What about the pressure of expectations? How do you deal with pressure?
– I do not see it as pressure.  I wanted to experience a new culture, a new country, a fantastic league. I kind of wanted to really impress and I have got the record of all time goals in Australia with 154. I kind of came here with the mentality of, yes, I want to score goals. And in this team, goals will come. But I ultimately want to come here and win trophies and just add to this team. This team is already great and I wanted to just add to that. That is sort of the mentality I have come with. You do win those individual accolades if your team is performing and the team always comes first. That’s a big reason why I joined Mohun Bagan, because they focus on team performance that leads to trophies. How is Jamie MacLaren backstage? – I like a bit of sport. I follow cricket very well. Australian sport, Golf… I have been enjoying a lot of Indian food. I have grown up with it. My parents do love it as well. At the moment, Bhindi Masala is the number one favourite for me and going on the vegetarian side. It is an amazing culture. People are so friendly. Behind closed doors, I like to be a little bit reserved and I have got a wife and a little baby, who will be coming here in December. I look forward to showing them this beautiful country.
