[ad_1] Mumbai City FC celebrates against Mohammedan SC (PC: Mumbai City FC) Naman Suri in Mumbai A side in transition, having lost several big names before the season even began, Mumbai City FC have experienced a mixed bag of results in this season of the Indian Super League (ISL) so far. The defending champions are currently fifth on the table with 27 points from 17 games. There are seven more matches to go. Key players like Rahul Bheke and Apuia Ralte, along with foreign recruits Jorge Pereyra Diaz and Alberto Noguera, left the club and these were significant losses. The void left by Diaz is glaring. In 37 ISL appearances for Mumbai City, the Argentine had scored 21 goals and provided seven assists. Although summer signing Nikos Karelis has stepped up appreciably, contributing nine goals in 16 matches, the rest of the squad has struggled to add meaningful contributions. Last season, Mumbai City’s goals were more evenly distributed, with attacking midfielders Lallianzuala Chhangte and Vikram Partap Singh leading the charge. Diaz, for example, managed only four goals in 11 games. Chhangte and Vikram netted nine and eight, respectively, across 18 matches. To strengthen their attack, head coach Petr Kratky brought in Spanish winger Jorge Ortiz during the winter transfer window. A product of Getafe’s youth system, Ortiz has prior experience in the ISL and AFC Champions League with FC Goa. During his time with Goa, he made 36 appearances, scoring 14 goals and providing eight assists. For the Latest Sports News: Click Here Head coach Petr Kratky (PC: Mumbai City FC) “As I said after the Punjab FC game, I believe we are heading for a strong finish to the season. The group is performing very well and I’m very positive going forward. I don’t focus on what’s happening on the ladder (points table). Instead, we’re taking it game by game, which remains our main focus,” Kratky stated in the post-match press conference following their recent 3-0 win over Mohammedan SC. The Islanders added depth to their squad by signing attacking midfielders Brandon Fernandes and Jon Toral. This has helped the team create chances. They are second only to Odisha FC in the league, when it comes to the expected goals (xG) tally, on 23.1. However, inability to convert these chances remains a key concern. Their struggles in finishing half-chances have been a recurring issue, but there were promising signs. They started to make use of their opportunities in the last 15 minutes of their dominant 3-0 victory over bottom-placed Mohammedan SC. This win came after a tough run of three consecutive 3-0 losses at home for the Islanders. Mohammedan SC head coach Andrey Chernyshov aptly summed up Mumbai City’s season after the match. “Look, we understood before the game that we would be playing against one of the best teams in the ISL. It doesn’t matter what happened with them in previous matches. They are still good. They might not have played so well in some games, but their quality with the ball is evident,” Chernyshov stated. Kratky remains optimistic, focusing on a game-by-game approach to finish the season on a high. Mumbai City FC will face East Bengal FC next on Friday, January 31, at their home ground. [ad_1] Left: Mohammed Rakip, Right: Dimitrios Diamantakos. Source: East Bengal FC Even the most ardent East Bengal supporters may now stop dreaming of a Top 6 finish in the ongoing edition of the Indian Super League. Against Odisha FC despite equalizing through Dimitrios Diamantakos’ penalty, the Red and Gold Brigade conceded again in the second half to a Mourtada Fall header, extending their winless streak to six matches this ISL season. In the last two seasons, East Bengal managed to gather some points in the first six games, but this year, despite a significant investment in the transfer window and acquiring some top-quality players, East Bengal has yet to click together as a cohesive unit. Next, they face a stern challenge in the AFC Challenge Cup in Bhutan starting from October 26, where the Red and Gold Brigade will clash with Paro FC, Nejmeh FC, and Bashundhara Kings in a single round-robin format. The new head coach, who has overseen the team in the last two games, remains optimistic about a turnaround in the continental tournament. Is there really a way back for East Bengal? The answer is yes. They boast a formidable squad compared to their opponents and have all the necessary ingredients to succeed. However, there are key areas and certain players holding the team back. In this article, we will analyze those areas in detail. Hijazi Maher is Far from His Prime Hijazi Maher was a vital cog in East Bengal’s defense last season, and any team would retain a player of his caliber. However, his performances this season have been in stark contrast to his previous form. The Jordanian defender has committed multiple costly errors, which have led to goals at crucial moments. Against FC Goa, he struggled, and in the match against Odisha FC, he was responsible for Roy Krishna’s opener, as the Fijian forward was left unmarked and scored with ease. Hijazi’s drop in form has been one of East Bengal’s significant concerns. Nandhakumar Sekhar. Source: East Bengal FC Inconsistent Nandha Kumar Sekhar Given the way East Bengal play, Nandha needs to understand that he can’t attempt risky dribbles and lose possession frequently in the attacking third. If he’s heavily marked, he should play the ball back to the midfield or defense rather than forcing the play. Against Odisha, Nandha lost possession multiple times. While his stamina and runs down the flanks are impressive, he needs to channel them properly and become more clinical in the final third. Lack of a Poacher or Consistent Goal Scorer Both Dimitrios Diamantakos and Cleiton Silva have been far from convincing this season. Diamantakos, who has started only three games due to injury, is yet to replicate his goal-scoring form from his time at Kerala Blasters. Meanwhile, domestic forward David Lalhlansanga has also struggled, scoring only once, and that too from a rebound. None of these three forwards have shown the ability to press opposition defenders or pose a constant threat in the box. Their form will be crucial for East Bengal’s fortunes going forward. Fitness Concerns Though East Bengal started their pre-season preparation four months ago, several players are still struggling to reach full match fitness. Mohammed Rakip and Pravat Lakra, who play in the crucial full-back positions, have both been sidelined with injuries and are yet to regain the required intensity for 90 minutes. Similarly, Diamantakos has been injured multiple times and has yet to reach full match fitness, affecting his performance on the pitch. Jeakson Singh’s Off Form There were high expectations for Jeakson Singh when he signed for East Bengal this season, but he has struggled to make an impact. As a deep-lying midfielder, Jeakson plays a vital role in linking defense and attack, as well as providing defensive cover. However, his performances have been underwhelming compared to his national team partner, Apuia, who is excelling for Mohun Bagan SG this season. Apuia has registered 182 successful passes, 26 duels won, 31 recoveries, and 12 interceptions so far this season.
In contrast, Jeakson has managed only 97 successful passes, 8 duels won, 12 recoveries, and 4 interceptions. Jeakson’s dip in form is another area of concern for East Bengal. Need for a Mental Conditioning Coach East Bengal players are now under immense pressure after losing six consecutive games. Despite their efforts in training, the players are struggling to achieve positive results on the pitch. This could be due to mental fatigue or anxiety. A mental conditioning coach could play a pivotal role in this situation. Such a coach helps athletes manage stress, control anxiety, and turn nervous energy into a positive force. Many successful teams, including India’s hockey team during their Olympic campaign, have benefitted from mental conditioning experts. East Bengal’s management should consider appointing one to restore the morale of their players.
