What a Liberty

North End suffered their tenth defeat in sixteen league games as they went down 1-2 to Swansea City at the Liberty Stadium. A much changed side with six changes from the Watford game looked like they had done enough to earn a point until the Swans won, for the first time at home since October4th, with a ninety fifth minute goal from Paterson. For the most part, and particularly in the first half, it was a pretty drab encounters with the home side looking nervous and North End desperate not to concede. The game changed a little once Paterson opened the scoring for Swansea as North End quickly replied with a Liam Millar effort cutting in from the left. From that point North End looked odds on to win the game but never really did enough to claim all three points and were punished right at the death with another late, late show to send the travelling faithful home with nothing after a 500 mile round trip.

The manager made six changes to the side humiliated by Watford at Deepdale last Saturday with Woodman, Whatmough, Whiteman, Millar, Osmajic and Keane making way for Cornell, Hughes, Ledson, Brady, Holmes and Evans. To a point I can understand his logic in bringing in players not tainted by the horror show last week. However to have Millar, Osmajic and Frokjaer on the bench sort of beggars belief in the current crisis surrounding the club. The game started tentatively but it was the home side who looked the more likely with Lowe having an early effort and then having a near post flick very well saved by Dai Cornell who was making his Championship debut for North End. Brady shot over and had a shout for a penalty turned down but there were not too many protestations by the visiting side. Swansea had the ball in the net in added time at the end of the first half but the linesman's flag saved North End from going in one down at the break.

Millar had replaced Brady just before the interval and was to prove the key to North End`s attack throughout the second half. Having said that it was the home side who took the lead on the hour mark when Paterson was found unmarked in the inside right position and he fired into the far corner to give a very shaky looking Swansea side the lead. North End responded and eight minutes later Millar was found in space on the left and cut in round the defender to fire home the equaliser and put North End on the front foot. We looked like we we go on to win a very poor game at this point and Millar and McCann both had chances late in the game, However it was to be the Swans that took all three points with their first home win in seven games as Paterson was found in almost exactly the same spot as the first goal and it was exactly the same outcome. It was a sickener but no surprise has North End have conceded late in a number this season and this was no exception.

No Pound Shop Klopp routine from Lowe this time at the end of the game as the manager timidly clapped the away fans from the safety of the technical area for about ten seconds before disappearing into the night. He looked like a manager who knew his time was up at Deepdale and that he had lost the fans and the dressing room. As i` have said before I had no problem with Ryan Lowe`s appointment but he has clearly gone as far as he can go at this point in his career and it is time for an immediate change at Deepdale. The focus is going off the football onto the manager and that is very unhelpful for the club. Unfortunately it is usually the case that when an unpopular manager will not fall on his sword that the anger and toxicity turns towards the boardroom. That would be very unhelpful for everyone at the club if it were to happen on Tuesday in front of the SKY Cameras. Finally just a word for the 246 who decided to make the trip to South Wales on Christmas Friday - you are not fans, you are Gentry .......and you deserve so much more than you got in Swansea.
