“A Routine Day Of Losses” Eighty Years Ago, Today: (Saturday) March 6th, 1942: In the middle of nowhere, 627 miles northwest of the Azores, or 640 miles southeast of St. Johns, Newfound (we’ll let you pick), the Norwegian freighter “SS Thorstrand,” falls prey to U-172 (Type IXC). Only four men are killed in the sinking, but its no easy days for the survivors in three lifeboats. Since the ship was running alone, they are stuck in the open sea with no hope of rescue. One boat starts to leak, and they split the balance between two boats. Striking off for the Azores, one boat is found after a week. The other is found after ten days. All told, 43 men survive the ordeal. About 1,800 miles to the southeast, U-410 stalks Convoy KMS-10. About 83 miles southwest of Sagres, Portugal, she strikes. Her torpedo sinks the British steamer “SS Fort Battle River.” Wonderfully, there are No Fatalities as the ship sinks. Another torpedo finds, but only damages, the British steamer “Fort Paskoyac.” There are No Fatalities to her crew of 67, and she steams on to Gibraltar with the Convoy. She is repaired and back in service by Autumn.
