A gorgeous Great Hammerhead from Tiger Beach last week swims amongst the vibrantly colored Tiger Beach reefs! Great Hammerheads arrived early this year and we expect to have them through May like the last few years! Late fall through early spring Great Hammerheads, Tigers, Bulls, Lemons, Nurse and Reef Sharks are the standard locals at Tiger Beach! When you add vibrantly colored reefs, crystal clear water and shallow water (nitrox) for extended bottom bottom times, it is a no brainer why Tiger Beach is quite simply the very best shark diving worldwide! White Shark once ruled our oceans in temperate waters maintaining the health and balance of our oceans! Today over 90% of all large sharks have been killed just for their fins...for a bowl of soup! For many years this 17ft tiger gentile giant was my closest shark friend in the Bahamas, prior to Emma! This gorgeous and friendly Tiger Shark...White Spot was killed by trophy hunters within weeks of when Tiger Beach location was revealed by another shark operator. These trophy hunters applied for a world record with her weighed and measured carcass! The local marina where she was weighed cut her down thinking she was pregnant after the KILLERS went to the bar. Two of the pups were still alive and were set free. The rest were already dead. My great friend Dr. Guy Harvey disqualified the attempted trophy. Since then I have honored her life by placing this image of her, on the side of my shark expedition vessel "Shear Water" to inspire all that know her story to help me save sharks! Why do we still allow and give trophies for the needless killing of our beautiful wildlife? Please help me end this needless practice by sharing this post! The many stories like this bring great sadness to me, however they also inspire me to save the few we still have!
