Tips For Choosing Your Prom Gown
So, you're thinking of having a wedding video to capture your special day, but what next? There's a lot of choice around and to make certain that every component of the wedding is captured exactly as you would like, you'll need to discuss a couple of things beforehand - in the end, you may not get a second take! Here, we've come up with ten top questions to ask your Wedding Videographer ahead of the wedding day. For a couple who likes nostalgia, you will find them some antique art that they can add interest to your certain section of their residence. It can be anything from an old oil painting or possibly a vase. You can check out flea markets and boutiques of vintage collectibles for these things. Another concept for unique wedding gifts is usually to put in a frame an old photo from the place where the couple met. You can get images similar to this from museums.
For the sleek and stylish gowns and ones where maximum headdress is being worn, a delicate sterling silver, Marcasite and either fresh water pearl or blue topaz looks amazing. If you are struggling to find that 'something blue', then blue topaz is a superb option. Some of the jewellery available today shows this semi-precious stone away and off to perfection and the jewellery sets, especially earrings and necklace look stunning over a bride. You can have a custom-made jewellery suite to fit your whole outfit and usually speaking this will not need to amount to a lot of money. Just hire a company where one can discuss your ideas, let them have a concept of an allowance to operate to and discover what they come up with, you could be amazed!
The event planner should tell the catering service if he plans to host an internal or outdoor event. The venue affects the type of food served. An indoor event may permit a sit back meal, while a backyard event provides for more portable foods. It also determines whether or not the caterer will bring paper plates and plastic silverware or if the catering company will take normal plates, silverware and napkins. Serving trays will likely be used no matter where the event is held. Wine Ceremony:The Wine Ceremony is pretty similar to the Unity Candle, but uses red and white wines as opposed to candles. The mothers from the groom and bride take the wine, one pours the burgandy or merlot wine into one glass and also the other pours the white wine into another glass. The bride and groom each take one glass and pours it in a third glass where both of them drink.

The Queen Mary 2. Gloriously Remastered And Back At Sea.
The worlds favourite ocean liner, the magnificent Queen Mary 2, was docked at the Cape Town Cruise Terminal for a couple of days, and I was lucky enough to enjoy a tour and lunch onboard.
Purpose built to do the trans-Atlantic crossing, the Cunard Line’s Queen Mary 2 has a deeper reinforced hull to help her cut through rougher weather at great speed. Unlike the cruise liners who spend most of their time at a leisurely pace on the Mediterranean or Caribbean seas, this beauty can be tough, and is able to push forward at a speed of over 30 knots, making it possible to travel from South Hampton to New York in just 5 days.
Her square shaped stern gives better hydrodynamic efficiency, says Steven Payne, the ship’s designer. Her lifeboats are high above the water line, so even a rogue wave can’t hurt them. And he shaped her bridge to protect passenger decks. The balconies are so high up that they are certainly not vulnerable – protected forward by the superstructure front, within the hull. And most of all besides the technical genius that she is, the QM2 is built for comfort and style.
After 14 years at sea, this magnificent ocean liner recently took a 90 days break in Germany for some essential remastering and upgrades. Taking cognisance of guest’s feedback, the changes included the additional of more single rooms, a fresh look at colour and refurb of the state rooms and restaurants.
The refurbishment, which is the biggest makeover Cunard has witnessed in its 176 year history, cost in the region of £90 million, and included the addition of 6000 pieces of new furniture and 4000 pieces of art to the cruise ship's rooms. It is said that 5200 men and women worked over a million hours to overhaul her machinery, refresh the exterior of the ship and transform her reception rooms, dining areas and cabins.
One of the recently remastered states rooms. The natural light capturing the naval blues and white couches, inspired nooks enhanced by modernistic lighting. You'd want to spend much time here, cocktail or coffee in hand, watching the ocean go by.
Passages are lined with lush red swivel chairs to take in the views from.
The Grand Lobby with it’s centre flower piece and symmetrical staircases, is where tours are booked and the Purser’s office is found.
More opulence, as one walks from one lounge to the next.
In her Queens Room is the largest dance floor at sea. Illuminations is a luxury 3D cinema, there’s a planetarium and a classical music venue and if you fancy a little shopping, there are some fine boutiques centred around the ship’s magnificent Grand Lobby, which provide a range of products from tempting souvenirs and gifts to exquisite jewellery and designer clothing.
The first planetarium at sea.
The Art Gallery to appease any art collector.
There are walls of painting of famous fold who have take journeys on the Queen Mary 2, and its as though their spirits still live on in the lounges and on the dance floors.
The library is found at the helm and offers natural light and comfy reading chairs next to the windows, with views towards the ocean and is home to 10000 books.
One of the five swimming pools onboard.
About the Queen Mary 2.
The winter garden has been magnificently transformed into the Carinthia Lounge room. There’s a sherry bar with one bottle that dates from 1875, to some current brands and vintages. 1310 luxurious staterooms comprise standard cabins, penthouses and deluxe apartments complete with butler and concierge services and, in some instances, private elevators and gyms.
There’s a 1000 seater state-of-the-art theatre, the largest library at sea with 10 000 books, a 360-degree promenade deck, casino, traditional British pub, ballroom, nightclub, art gallery, five swimming pools and a 3D cinema that morphs into the first at-sea planetarium, making for no shortage of leisure options.
Eleven restaurants have 150 chefs showcasing 343 wine labels, and offering passengers menus that range from healthy to hearty, light to haute cuisine and an English high tea. The smoke their own meat, bake their own bread and from a supplier point of view are very meticulous. Fresh produce, wine, meat and flowers arrived whilst they were in Cape Town, enough to see the guests through to Sydney. The kitchen caters for all dietary requirements, from halaal to vegetarian.
A full time florist onboard and a team of 30 assistants sees to the fresh flower bouquets on each table, in each cabin, lobby and lounge. There is no class grading on the QM2 and the public areas are accessible to all guests, whether you’s in a small cabin or a suite.
The ship also has a very impressive green policy and allows nothing but a limited amount of finely processed food waste to go overboard. All else is sorted and collected, for disposal each time they arrive on shore. Including grey water. They process their own drinking water too.
A look at the remastering.
All 172 Grills suites have received a comprehensive restyling and have been reconfigured to maximise space. The Grills dining experience has been elevated and the two Grill restaurants have been redesigned to offer more table size options and space.
The King’s Court buffet has been redesigned to create a more open and central buffet area. The Carinthia Lounge – QM2’s Winter Garden – is now unrecognisable as it has been reconfigured into a refined, airy and versatile new venue. The Verandah replaces the Todd English restaurant.
Exactly 80 years after the first Cunard Verandah Grill went to sea on Queen Mary, the latest incarnation of The Verandah concept is now available on board Queen Mary 2 and offers contemporary premium French cuisine.
The Queen Mary 2 fun facts.
- She is four football fields in length – a total of 345 metres - She is equal to the height of a 23-storey building with 17 decks that tower 200 feet above the waterline - She covers an area of 3.5 acres - Her whistle is audible for ten miles - Her speed of 29.5 knots is double the speed of a Caribbean cruise ship and nearly three times the speed of a blue whale - She’s constructed from some 300,000 pieces of steel; her hull is made up of 94 steel blocks and weighs 50,000 tons (more than a school of 330 blue whales). The QM2 gross weight is 151,400 tons. - She carries 343 different wines on board with annual wine sales estimated at around 230 000 bottles. - In total over one year, passengers will consume 38,000 lbs of smoked salmon, 346,000 gallons of fruit juice, 249,000 lbs of potatoes and 420,000 packets of breakfast cereal. Excluding wine, the QM2 serves 1.5 million drinks per annum. - There are 1310 staterooms in total of which 955 (73%) cabins feature balconies. - The maximum capacity is 3090 passengers, with a staff 1290 staff members, which explains the high level of detail that those on board experience.
A voyage on the Queen Mary 2 is certain to create unforgettable memories. This particular cruise journey continues onwards to Port Elizabeth, Mauritius, Reunion and culminates in Australia in April. This will be the first stop on her world cruise following her remastering.
Don’t be thinking that a trip onboard is out of your reach, a 7 day cruise can cost as little as R30000pp all inclusive. Or you could save up for the 118 around the world life altering experience. Packages include an onboard spend for meals and drink, and you can top up if needed.
This route has them sweeping over the Indian Ocean on a 16-night cruise. After Cape Town, the QM2 will pause for the game reserves of Port Elizabeth before touching down in Reunion, with its rugged, volcanic interior - then on to beach-fringed Mauritius. Eight days later, historic Fremantle will welcome them to Australia. Here’s a look at pricing should you hope for a similar experience.

Thank you to Wired Communications for the invitation to join you for a tour and delicious lunch onboard

Art Deco
Art Deco became popular by the end of the nineteenth century in France, and affected the design of buildings, furniture, jewellery, fashion, cars, movie theatres, trains, ocean liners, and everyday objects such as vacuum cleaners and radios. Art Deco combined modernist styles with fine craftsmanship and rich materials. During its prime, Art Deco represented luxury, glamour, exuberance, and faith in social and technological progress. Art Deco came to be as designers and architects were starting to realise that Art Nouveau was starting to fade off. The Exhibition that officially launched the movement was held between the esplanade of the golden-domed Les Invalides and the entrances of the Petit Palais and the Grand Palais on both sides of the Seine River. During the seven months in which the exhibition was held over 16 million people toured the many single exhibits and more than 15,000 artists, architects, and designers presented their work at the exposition. The Art Nouveau was inspired mostly by nature and praised the qualities of the hand-crafted, however the Art Deco aesthetic underlined machine-age streamlining and smooth geometry. Art Deco's main visual characteristics originate from repetitive use of linear and geometric shapes including triangular, zigzagged, trapezoidal, and chevron-patterned forms. We can say that Art Deco was a pastiche of many different styles, sometimes contradictory, united by a desire to be modern. From its outset, Art Deco was influenced by the bold geometric forms of Cubism; the bright colors of Fauvism and of the Ballets Russes; and the updated craftsmanship of the furniture of the eras of Louis Philippe and Louis XVI; by the exotic styles of China and Japan, India, Persia, ancient Egypt and Maya art. It featured rare and expensive materials such as ebony and ivory and exquisite craftsmanship. A more sleek form of the style, called Streamline Moderne, appeared in the 1930s; it featured curving forms and smooth, polished surfaces. Art Deco became one of the first truly international architectural styles, with examples found in European cities, the United States, Russia, Latin America, Africa and Asia. Art Deco took hold even in world capitals as diverse as Havana, Cuba, Mumbai, and Jakarta. The port of Shanghai contains more than fifty Art Deco structures and the London Underground railway system heavily incorporates this style. Sydney and Melbourne in Australia have many structures inspired by this style as well. Deco also helped to inspire the Memphis Group, this was a design and architecture movement positioned in Milan during 1980s. The style came to an end with the beginning of World War II. This was mostly as further technological advances allowed for cheaper production of basic consumer items and thus reducing the need and popularity of Art Deco. Art Deco was replaced as the dominant global style by the strictly functional and unadorned styles of modernism and the International Style of architecture. This style has now become a nostalgic, affectionately remembered classic.

Unveiling the Allure of Beach Boho Jewelry: A Bohemian Symphony of Style
The boho style, short for bohemian, is characterized by its laid-back, unconventional, and artistic vibe. It draws inspiration from the bohemian lifestyle and is known for its eclectic, earthy, and vibrant elements. Beach boho jewelry takes this style a step further by infusing the very essence of the beach and ocean into each piece.
One of the most enchanting features of beach boho jewellery is the use of natural materials. Seashells, sea glass, driftwood, and stones are lovingly incorporated into designs, celebrating the raw beauty of the shoreline. These pieces transport you to the beach, even when you're miles away, evoking memories of sandy toes and salt-kissed hair.
The color palette of beach boho jewelry is a reflection of the sea and its surroundings. Expect to find soothing shades of aquamarine, sandy beige, and tranquil blues, mirroring the ocean's endless depths and the sun-kissed shores. These hues evoke a sense of calm and serenity, making beach boho jewelry the perfect accessory for those who seek solace by the water's edge.
Beach boho jewelry also often features intricate beadwork and macramé techniques. These handcrafted details add depth and dimension to each piece, creating a visual feast of textures. The juxtaposition of soft, flowing materials with the solidity of stones and shells creates a harmonious balance between the rugged and the delicate.
Incorporating these pieces into your wardrobe is as effortless as a day at the beach. Beach boho jewelry complements a wide range of outfits and occasions. Whether you're donning a flowing maxi dress for a beach wedding, slipping on your favorite cutoffs for a weekend getaway, or layering pieces for a boho-chic festival look, these accessories are incredibly versatile. They effortlessly transition from day to night, from the shoreline to the city streets.
The best part about beach boho jewellery australia is its accessibility. You don't need to be a skilled jewelry maker to create your own pieces. Many beach enthusiasts have embraced the DIY approach, crafting jewelry that is uniquely personal. Online tutorials and local workshops offer plenty of guidance for those looking to try their hand at this creative endeavor.
Not only is beach boho jewelry a fashion statement, but it's also an avenue for self-expression. Every piece tells a story, reflecting the personality and experiences of the wearer. It's a way to carry a piece of the beach with you wherever you go, a tangible reminder of the carefree moments and the endless horizon that beckons.
Beyond aesthetics, beach boho jewelry embodies a deeper connection with the environment. By using natural materials, it encourages sustainable practices and an appreciation for the beauty of the natural world. This resonates with the eco-conscious spirit of our times and aligns with the values of those who cherish our oceans and beaches.

Extraordinary Women: The world is full of extraordinary women who are inspiring, creative, daring and powerful, all while embracing femininity in their own unique way. Women appreciate craftsmanship, talent and creativity. They invest in what can be passed down and what can create an emotion. For them, the new Piaget Limelight Gala.
Piaget Patrimony, model 1973 – Inspiration for LImelight Gala
Stealing the Limelight
The new Limelight Gala was inspired by an iconic model created in 1973 when the brand’s famous Piaget Society was in full swing. Celebrities, artists, clients, and friends of the Maison would get together for the most fabulous parties, gathering stars such as Salvador Dali, Jackie Kennedy, Elizabeth Taylor, Andy Warhol, Cary Grant and Sami Davis Jr.
As vibrant today as it was in the 1970s, the Piaget Society continues to unite a creative, curious, and intelligent set of people who share a certain art de vivre.
Piaget Patrimony, model 1964 – Inspiration Limelight Gala
A Feminine Icon
Piaget’s Limelight Gala was inspired by the elegant spirit of the 1960s, with its sensual curves, cambered case and asymmetrical lugs that extend from each side of the case onto the bracelet. The modern interpretation of the Limelight Gala reproduces the same design with a perfectly integrated case and lugs that are combined with a swirl of exquisite gemstones, ornate dials, and sumptuous gold bracelets.
Piaget Palace Decor
Almost 60 years on and the Piaget Limelight Gala is more than a wristwatch, it is a feminine icon that has become a symbol of elegance and harmony.
Piaget Limelight Gala Precious Rose Gold G0A45161
Dazzling new editions for 2020
This year, Piaget is presenting a host of new Limelight Gala timepieces in celebration of these iconic creations that dates back to more than half a century. Each piece follows Piaget’s four pillars of excellence: The Art of Movement, The Art of Gold, The Art of Colour and The Art of Light.
The Art of Gold
Shimmering in the light, this new Piaget Limelight Gala Precious Sapphire Gradient (Ref. G0A45163) celebrates the signature design of the Limelight Gala collection with a hand-engraved gold bracelet and dial that are highlighted by 20 large diamonds (approx. 1.46 cts) and 22 blue sapphires (approx. 4.01 cts) set in a subtle gradient of blue.
Piaget is one of the few remaining Maisons that has the savoir-faire to make hand-made gold bracelets. This rare traditional craft started in the 1960s and became hugely popular thanks to Piaget’s bold creations. Mainly inspired by nature, Piaget has used over one hundred different life-like motifs to craft its hand-made gold bracelets, such as leather design, ocean waves, frost, flowers, foliage, bark, snake scales and many more.
Piaget Limelight Gala Precious Sapphire Gradient G0A45163
The work of a chainsmith is similar to that of a Haute-Couture dressmaker. The artisan will start with hundreds of gold links, which will be tightly assembled. The next step is the soldering of the countless miniature links that will result in a bracelet of remarkable suppleness.
The white gold bracelet featured on this new timepiece has been created in this fashion, then hand-engraved in the Palace Décor style, one of Piaget’s most iconic motifs, which requires eight hours of work. Only a few artisans, who work in Piaget’s “Workshop of Extraordinary Creations”, have the expertise to hand-engrave this pattern.
The dial is also made of white gold and is engraved using the same Palace Décor technique. It takes two hours to complete the engraving on the dial and it is always carried out by the same engraver who decorates the bracelet to ensure a uniform design. To let the Décor shine through, the dial is covered in translucent blue enamel. It is oven-fired multiple times at a temperature over 800°C, giving this technique the name of “Grand Feu” Enamel.
Piaget Limelight Gala Precious Sapphire Gradient G0A45363
Finding the perfect colour gemstones for this timepiece was also one of the most challenging operations. It involved sampling large quantities of gemstones to ensure the perfect colour match, a task made even more complex given the large progressive size of the stones and the high gem quality standards of the Maison. To magnify the brilliance of the stones, Piaget’s gem-setters have expertly set the gemstones by hand, using the Serti Descendu technique.
This timepiece is so unique that it is a numbered edition. There is also a similar version (Ref. G0A45363) with a mother-of-pearl dial and a dark-blue alligator strap, limited to 88 pieces.
The Art of Light
Recognised for its daring vision and incredible savoir-faire, Piaget is one of the world’s most prestigious watchmakers/jewellers. For over 140 years, the Maison’s artisans have been creating high-jewellery masterpieces by combining precious metals with flawless gemstones and innovative design.
Piaget Limelight Gala Precious Rose Gold G0A45161
A new rose gold version, (Ref. G0A45161) also using the Serti Descendu technique to set the 57 diamonds (approx. 4.80 cts), is available with a burgundy-coloured strap and a delicate mother-of-pearl dial of exceptional quality. It is extremely white in colour, with beautiful reflections, which attests of its high quality.
Piaget Limelight Gala Precious G0A45170
Three new Haute-Joaillerie Limelight Gala timepieces join the collection this year with stunning oval dials paved with snow-set diamonds, and a captivating setting of marquise-cut gemstones on the bezel, lugs and bracelet.
Piaget Limelight Gala Precious G0A45171
The marquise cut is an important part of Piaget’s history. As legend has it, France’s King Louis XV asked to cut a diamond in honour of the smile of his beloved Marquise de Pompadour. The resulting diamond let the light shine in from the very centre of the gemstone, giving it a unique radiance. This unique cut became a signature for the Maison.
Piaget Limelight Gala Precious G0A45168
The three new High Jewellery timepieces come in a 28 by 23mm case. One model adorned with a fully-paved bracelet set with 364 brilliant- and marquise-cut diamonds (approx. 12.42 cts, Ref. G0A45170), a second one set with both diamonds and blue sapphires (Ref. G0A45171), and the third one set with 237 diamonds and fitted with an elegant blue satin strap (Ref. G0A45168).
Piaget Limelight Gala Aventurine Glass Dial 26mm G0A45152
The Art of Colour
Three new aventurine glass models join the Limelight Gala collection, showcasing the brand’s love for the celestial sky above our heads. Each dial is crafted from aventurine glass, a magical material that takes its name from the Italian word avventura, meaning “adventure”. Aventurine dates back to the 17th century with some of the first records coming from Murano, Venice, a town famous for its glass making. The process consists of adding copper oxide to glass to give it a mesmerising twinkle that mirrors the starry night sky.
Piaget Limelight Gala Aventurine Glass Dial 32mm G0A45162
There are two Limelight Gala Aventurine Glass Dial: a 32mm case (Ref. G0A45162) adorned with 63 diamonds (approx. 1.76 ct) and a smaller 26mm case version (Ref. G0A45152) with 57 diamonds (approx. 0.87 ct), both limited to 300 pieces each.
Piaget Limelight Gala Precious Aventurine Glass Dial G0A45180
Another model, the Limelight Gala Precious Aventurine Glass Dial (Ref. G0A45180), is set with 57 diamonds (approx. 4.80 cts) using the Serti Descendu technique and limited to 200 pieces.
Piaget Limelight Gala Ref. G0A45007
Piaget Limelight Gala High Jewellery Black Opal
This stunning one-of-a-kind high-jewellery creation (Ref. G0A45007) features a dial fitted with a rare and precious black opal. Black opals are fascinating as they reflect a myriad of bright colours when they catch the light, such as yellow, green, blue, orange and red. The colours depend on the structure of the stone, and also the angle and brightness of the light, frequently changing before our eyes.
Piaget Limelight Gala Ref. G0A45007
Black opals are only found in Australia and Ethiopia, making them particularly rare. Australian black opals were first found in the 19th century, where Ethiopian stones were only discovered around 15 years ago. In the present case from Australia, Piaget kept this rare and extraordinary opal for five years and waited for the perfect creation to host it.

The Limelight Gala High Jewellery Black Opal highlights its black opal with the addition of 86 brilliant-cut blue sapphires (approx. 5.51 cts) and a colourful array of marquise-cut coloured gemstones that start with 58 sapphires (approx. 6.23 cts), first yellow followed with orange and 14 pink rubies (approx. 1.41 cts) in a progressive gradient of colours to create a jewel that celebrates the best of the Earth’s treasures.

Be the Climate Change you want to see
As we bid goodbye to the Deccan Herald’s School Edition, I share the last short story I wrote for the newspaper, with nostalgia and sadness - will miss you DHSE
Part 1
Lena opened her cupboard and jumped away from the clothes that tumbled around her. She rifled through the pile of clothes and picked one dress after another and tried them on.
She knew it. Not one of them looked right. She had nothing to wear for the party tonight. She gathered all the clothes again and pushed them back into the cupboard and forced shut the door.
‘Ma, I have nothing to wear for Geeta’s birthday party. Can we go and buy some new clothes?’
‘No, Lena, I already told you, no more new clothes, until you declutter your cupboard. We bought new clothes for Diwali, Christmas and new year – wear one of them.’
‘But Ma, all my friends have already seen them,’ scoffed Lena.
Her mother just shrugged.
Lena pleaded with her through the day, but she did not budge. Lena reluctantly went back to her cupboard and picked the most faded jeans and a top she had worn maybe once last year, which she hoped nobody would remember.
As she got ready for Geeta’s party, she wondered what her friend had planned for her party this year. She always managed to surprise her friends with a new theme every year.
As Lena walked into Geeta’s home, she was surprised that there were no streams of electric fairy lights outside. She was greeted with fruit juice, there was no aerated juice. Inside the apartment, the AC was switched off and all the windows had been thrown open. The table had a huge spread – lots of salads and healthy organic food, and everything was vegetarian. No meat and no junk food.
If Lena was surprised, what shocked her more was when Geeta greeted her. She wasn’t wearing any new clothes. She wore the dress she had worn for the New Year party. Come to think of it, she had worn it for Diwali too.
What had happened? Why hadn’t Geeta’s parents got her new clothes or fairy lights, or…or junk food…or kababs.
‘Hey Lena, come join the gang, we are all sitting in the terrace garden amongst the plants.’
Eek, there might be creepy crawlies there, why couldn’t they sit in the large living room and play music or something.
In the terrace garden, everyone was sprawled around on the lawn. There were candles lit around the lawn, which created a magical atmosphere. Someone was speaking. Lena craned her neck to see - he would be only 16 years or so. As young as all of them.
‘Geeta happy birthday. I am so glad you decided to go green on your birthday. I’m Vishal – I am a climate change activist. Geeta invited me to talk to all of you. I am sure, you all know about climate change, but how many of you are acting on it? How many of you are concerned enough to be part of the change?’
Everyone was silent.
Vishal then spoke about Greta Thunberg and her campaigns for climate change. The 17-year-old Swedish teenager had spoken at the UN climate change conference and had spearheaded the ‘School strike for the climate’ and had addressed world leaders on the climate crisis and to take action on global warming. She even sailed across the Atlantic Ocean from Plymouth, England, to New York, USA, in a yacht equipped with solar panels and underwater turbines. Her journey was considered a carbon-neutral transatlantic crossing and took 15 days.
Geeta added ‘Greta doesn’t eat meat and convinced her parents to give up air travel to reduce their carbon footprint. We are all around the same age as Greta, how many of us have the courage to do what she’s doing.’
Vishal went on to give more details on Greta’s activism and how students around the world were organising school climate strike protests under Fridays for Future. ‘All of us are guilty of being part of this consumer society. We hoard, we buy more than we need, we are constantly taking, taking, taking from this earth. Each year we dump more carbon into the atmosphere, we are endangering the planet. Life on earth as we know will change – look at forest fires in Australia or all the recent flooding we have had in India across the country. We have to change before it’s too late.’
‘We can’t live as though there’s no tomorrow. It’s our tomorrow, our future, our earth, we have to preserve it,’ added Geeta. ‘How many of you are with us?’
Someone asked, ‘But, what can we do, Greta is on the world stage, people listen to her, she’s an influencer, nobody is going to listen to us.’
‘But when Greta began her school strike nobody was with her. She sat in protest alone. It caught the attention of social media and the rest, as they say, is history,’ said Vishal.
‘We can start with ourselves, in small ways. I am going vegetarian and I am going to stop buying any more clothes, unless I really need them. This is my pledge. What about yours?’ asked Geeta.
To be continued
Be the Climate Change you want to see
Janaki Murali
Part 2
Soon everyone was adding their own pledge.
‘Switch off the fans in unoccupied rooms. I can do that.’
‘Everyone talks about growing a tree, I live in a flat, but I can have a potted plant and take care of it. Maybe I will grow herbs.’
‘I am going to cycle to school, instead of asking my dad to drop me off in his car. It will reduce one car from the traffic congestion around our school gate.’
‘We can do car-pool. We can talk to other school children going to the same school or nearby schools in our apartment blocks and our parents can take turns to drop us or pick us up.’
‘We too can do the Friday strike at school.’
‘We are not ready yet. Unless we practice, we cannot preach. Nobody will listen to us, if we can’t all be Gretas,’ said Geeta. ‘How much are we willing to give up? We have to be willing to change before advocating change.’
Lena had been quiet through it all. She was thinking of how she had wanted a new dress to wear at Geeta’s party. And to think, Geeta had turned up for her own party wearing some old clothes. ‘I have so many clothes, it’s not funny. Can we set up a donation fund, to collect some of our old but nice clothes. We could donate these to the kids at the government school near our school.’
‘What a fantastic idea. We could donate our old toys too. I have so many board games and Barbie dolls which are lying in cartons under my bed.’
Soon ideas were flying back and forth about the things they could do.
&&&
Geeta’s birthday party was the start of many good things to come.
For one, Lena surprised her mother by clearing her overflowing cupboard. She borrowed two empty cartons, from the store nearby, to fill with the clothes she was giving away. As she started sorting out her clothes, she felt ashamed at how many clothes she had. She found that there were many clothes she didn’t even know she possessed - tops and shirts and tees and dresses and skirts and jeans and pants and scarves and hairbands and bangles and earrings. Phew!
She picked out some of her favourite clothes she wanted to keep and stacked them back in the cupboard. Then she folded the clothes she had decided to give away and stacked them neatly in the cartons, At the end of some three hours, she looked at her cupboard. It looked so neat and tidy now and she even had two empty shelves to keep other stuff, like hairbands and scarves and jewellery.
Her mother walked in with a tray of biscuits and hot chocolate.
‘I am so proud of you Lena. You know you inspire me. I am going to do the same with my cupboard. I have so many saris and salwar suits. I am going to sort them out and give away too.’
‘Aww, mom, that’s so sweet. When it all started in Geeta’s house, I never thought we could really bring about change, then Geeta said it had to start with us. I never thought you would join in too,’ said Lena. ‘And, is it okay if I cycled to school from now on? I know you worry about me cycling in traffic. I will be careful and take all the side roads. You and dad can stop dropping me at school or picking me up.’
Lena’s dad dropped her at school and her mother picked her up.
‘Hmm, the problem is there’s no cycling track on the route to your school and you’re right, I will worry, with this crazy Bangalore traffic. How about if we do car-pool? Find some more kids from the building to join us. All us moms and dads can take turns to drop y’all at school?’
Lena was smiling when she went to school the next day. She had so much to share with Geeta and Vishal.
She had not only climate changed her life - she had managed to climate-change her mom’s life and some of the other kids in the building too. Two children in the building had agreed to do car-pool with her. They didn’t go to the same school as her, but went to schools that were in the same neighbourhood. Their parents were happy to car-pool and most important of all, Lena made some new friends.
Concluded
