Excerpt from this press release from the Department of the Interior:
Today, the Biden-Harris Administration announced that NOAA is designating 4,543 square miles of coastal and offshore waters along 116 miles of California’s central coast as America’s 17th national marine sanctuary. Chumash Heritage National Marine Sanctuary will conserve the area’s diverse range of marine life and celebrate Indigenous peoples’ connections to the region. It is the third largest sanctuary in the National Marine Sanctuary System.
The sanctuary designation advances President Biden’s ocean conservation legacy and his America the Beautiful Initiative, which supports locally-led collaborative conservation efforts across the country and sets a national goal of protecting, conserving and restoring at least 30% of U.S. lands and waters by 2030. With this designation, the Biden-Harris Administration has now conserved more than 45 million acres of lands and waters.
Stretching from just south of Diablo Canyon Power Plant in San Luis Obispo County to the Gaviota Coast in Santa Barbara County, the sanctuary will bring comprehensive community- and ecosystem-based management to nationally significant natural, historical, archeological and cultural resources — including kelp forests, rocky reefs, sandy beaches, underwater mountains and more than 200 NOAA-documented shipwrecks.
The sanctuary’s boundaries exclude areas where future subsea electrical transmission cables and floating offshore substations could be installed outside the sanctuary to connect the Morro Bay Wind Energy Area to the electrical power grid at Morro Bay and Diablo Canyon Power Plant, ensuring that the sanctuary meets both conservation and clean energy goals. NOAA will consider a potential expansion of the sanctuary in the coming years, after transmission cables have been laid.
This sanctuary designation is the result of a decade of work by Tribes, Indigenous Peoples, community leaders, organizations, businesses, state and local officials, and members of Congress — including then-Senator and now Vice President Kamala Harris — to develop and advance the vision for the Chumash Heritage National Marine Sanctuary.

Bixby Bridge, CA (No. 1)
Bixby Bridge, also known as Bixby Creek Bridge, on the Big Sur coast of California, is one of the most photographed bridges in California due to its aesthetic design, "graceful architecture and magnificent setting". It is a reinforced concrete open-spandrel arch bridge. The bridge is 120 miles (190 km) south of San Francisco and 13 miles (21 km) south of Carmel in Monterey County on State Route 1.
Before the opening of the bridge in 1932, residents of the Big Sur area were virtually cut off during winter due to blockages on the often impassable Old Coast Road, which led 11 miles (18 km) inland. The bridge was built under budget for $199,861 (equivalent to $3.64 million in 2023 dollars) and, at 360 feet (110 m), was the longest concrete arch span in the California State Highway System. When it was completed, it was the highest single-span arch bridge in the world,  and it remains one of the tallest.
The land north and south of the bridge was privately owned until 1988 and 2001. A logging company obtained approval to harvest redwood on the former Bixby Ranch to the north in 1986, and in 2000 a developer obtained approval to subdivide the former Brazil Ranch to the south. Local residents and conservationists fought their plans, and both pieces of land were eventually acquired by local and federal government agencies. A $20 million seismic retrofit was completed in 1996, although its 24-foot (7.3 m) width does not meet modern standards requiring bridges to be 32 feet (9.8 m) wide.
The bridge is "one of the most photographed features on the West Coast" and in the world. It has been featured on "postcards, TV ads, everywhere," according to Debra Geiler, project manager for the Trust for Public Land. The bridge's location on the scenic Central Coast of California, the parabolic shape of the arch, the tall spandrel columns, and the architectural piers contribute to an "intense aesthetic experience." "It's the gateway to Big Sur and the interior has never been logged. The land is pristine." Zad Leavy, former executive director of the Big Sur Land Trust, described the land as "...the most spectacular meeting of ocean and land in the entire United States."

A Visit to the Pacific Coast
Saturday morning’s blood sugar was up a couple of points to 164. Since we planned to get on the road early for our fifth anniversary trip, we only managed the Spelling Bee with our coffee. We did the other brain games when we got home this evening.
The first place we stopped was Our Daily Bread in Veneta, just a dozen miles west of Eugene, for a nice breakfast. During a brief conversation with one of the employees, we were saddened to learn that the place had been broken into four times in the last three months. They are now contemplating puts bars over all the windows.
Then we continued to Florence on OR 126 and turned north on OR 101. Before leaving Florence entirely behind we stopped for a cold brew at Ocean Grinds, a nice local coffee shop.
Just about 13 miles north of Florence is the state park where the Heceta Head Lighthouse is located. The lighthouse, built in 1894, is midway up a 205-foot-tall headland. The 56-foot-tall lighthouse shines a beam visible for 21 nautical miles, making it the strongest light on the Oregon Coast.
The light is maintained by the Oregon Parks and Recreation Department, while the assistant lighthouse keepers’ house, halfway up the headland, is operated as a bed-and-breakfast inn. It is maintained by the U.S. Forest Service, and there were tents in place for a wedding that was taking place later in the day.
The interior of the lighthouse itself was open, but only the first floor. A few exhibits were located there and in an adjacent building, and there was also a gift shop on the corner of the keepers’ house grounds. We bought a magnet for our fridge, and a sticker for granddaughter Kathleen and a pin for sister Deborah.
We also walked a little bit along the beach where Nancy picked up a few small pieces of driftwood, since the traditional fifth anniversary present is “wood.”
Then it was on to Yachats, where we spent a couple of hours walking check out some of the town. According to Oregon Geographic Names, the name comes from the Siletz language and means “dark water at the foot of the mountain.” It was originally named Oceanview. It was renamed Yachats in 1917.
The “Gem of the Oregon coast” has an official population of about 1,000, but the Yachats area has been inhabited for at least 1,500 years. Today, tourism is the city’s main industry.
On the way to a park overlooking the ocean we passed by the Little Log Church, a historical museum displaying Yachats artifacts. The church, built in 1926, was designed in the shape of a cross. The museum is now owned by the city, and the exterior logs are all being replaced due to rot. We did not visit the museum. We will save that for a future trip to Yachats.
A little after 3 p.m. we went to The Drift Inn for an early dinner. It was recommended by a couple of friends, and we were pleased with the food and atmosphere of the popular place. Nancy and I both got cheeseburgers and fries. Nancy got a local IPA.
According to a couple of pages of history included in the menu, The Drift Inn was built in 1929, with wood brought down the beach from Toledo, another 30 miles north along the coast. The bar “shut down” and became an ice cream parlor during prohibition, with a dance hall, drinking and card playing upstairs.
The Yachats Covered Bridge is about nine miles outside of town. Built in 1938 over the north fork of the Yachats River it was renovated in 1989 after an accident caused serious damage. At 42 feet long, the bridge is one of the shortest in Oregon and it is one of only two covered bridges in Lincoln County open to vehicular traffic. The bridge was on our list of things to see, but that will wait until our next visit to the area.
On the way back home, we drove up to see the Cape Perpetua Overlook. Cape Perpetua is a large forested headland projecting into the Pacific Ocean. The land is managed by the United States Forest Service as part of the Siuslaw National Forest. The cape was named by Captain James Cook on March 7, 1778, as he searched for the Pacific entrance to a Northwest Passage. Cook named the cape Perpetua because it was discovered on St. Perpetua’s Day.
At its highest point, Cape Perpetua rises to more than 800 feet above sea level. From its crest, you can see 70 miles of Oregon coastline and as far as 37 miles out to sea on a clear day. Unfortunately, by the time we reached the top, fog had enveloped us and we could see no more than a few yards from the viewpoint. We could still hear the waves crashing on the shore below.
We finally arrived home a little before 7 p.m., and shortly afterwards I took off for another walk around the neighborhood that went for two miles. Once home, we finished the evening with an episode of “Midsomer Murders.”

Social Media Photo Shows Alligator Crossing Busy Sarasota Road Ahead of Mating Season
A social media photo recently showed an alligator crossing a busy road in Sarasota just before mating season. This unusual sight reminds us that alligators live in our area and are starting to move around more as the mating season approaches. It’s important for drivers to be extra careful and watch for wildlife crossing roads. Alligators are usually found in swamps and marshes, but they can sometimes wander into places where people live. Seeing an alligator on the road is a good reminder to respect their natural habitat and to be aware of their presence. Local wildlife officials might use this information to help keep both people and alligators safe during this time.

NASA Goddard to Build Quake Detector for Artemis III Moon Landing - NASA
New Post has been published on https://sunalei.org/news/nasa-goddard-to-build-quake-detector-for-artemis-iii-moon-landing-nasa/
NASA Goddard to Build Quake Detector for Artemis III Moon Landing - NASA
Tumblr media
NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland, will build a moonquake detector for astronauts to deploy on the Moon in 2026 during the Artemis III mission, which will return astronauts to the lunar surface for the first time in more than 50 years.
NASA selected the instrument, the Lunar Environment Monitoring Station (LEMS) as one of the first three potential payloads for Artemis III. LEMS is a compact, autonomous seismometer designed to carry out continuous, long-term monitoring of ground motion from moonquakes in the region around the lunar South Pole. The data LEMS gathers will help scientists study the Moon’s internal structure and could help refine our understanding of how the Moon formed.
Planetary scientist Mehdi Benna, of the University of Maryland Baltimore County (UMBC) Center for Space Sciences Technology (CSST), leads the LEMS team at NASA Goddard.
“The LEMS project is the culmination of several years of collaboration between UMBC, University of Maryland, College Park, and NASA Goddard,” Benna said.
Benna began conceptualizing the idea behind the LEMS instrument in 2018 after realizing the need for technology that could withstand the Moon’s harsh conditions to measure lunar geophysical activity for a long duration of time.
The team began developing his idea of a small, self-sustaining station that operates almost like a buoy in the ocean — what Benna calls a “lunar buoy” — that can survive on the surface through the lunar night and operate during the day. In 2018, Benna’s team received funding from NASA’s Development and Advancement of Lunar Instrumentation program to develop LEMS to flight readiness.
LEMS is intended to operate on the lunar surface from three months up to two years and could become a key station in a future global lunar geophysical network.
Moonquakes were first observed after Apollo astronauts placed seismometers on the lunar surface during their missions between 1969 and 1972. Moonquakes’ sources include the same tug of gravity between Earth and the Moon that cause ocean tides. In addition, the Moon trembles as it expands and contracts due to temperature changes, like a house creaking when the weather heats up or cools down.
The Apollo seismic data was collected on the Earth-facing side of the Moon near the lunar equator. “We don’t have seismic data from the lunar South Pole that can inform us on the local and global lunar subsurface structure,” said Naoma McCall, LEMS co-investigator and seismologist at NASA Goddard.
UMBC leads LEM’s science investigation. NASA Goddard will build and operate LEMS. The University of Arizona will supply LEMS’ two state-of-the-art seismometer sensors; Morehead State University in Kentucky will provide LEMS’ telecommunication system and the homebase of the mission’s operation center, and Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri, will manage the instrument’s data processing and dissemination to the larger scientific community.
The other candidate instruments selected alongside LEMS are the Lunar Effects on Agricultural Flora instrument, led by researchers at Space Lab Technologies in Boulder, Colorado, and the Lunar Dielectric Analyzer instrument, led by researchers at the University of Tokyo and supported by JAXA (Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency).
Together these instruments could collect valuable scientific data about the lunar environment, the lunar interior and how to sustain a long-duration human presence on the Moon, helping prepare NASA to send astronauts to Mars. Final manifesting decisions for Artemis III will be made at a later date.

The Breakers in Rhode Island: A Glimpse into Gilded Age Opulence
Tumblr media
Rhode Island's magnificent coastline is home to some of America's most iconic landmarks, and nestled among its shores stands an architectural masterpiece that epitomizes Gilded Age extravagance - The Breakers. This opulent mansion, located in Newport, is a testament to the grandeur and wealth that characterized America's elite during the late 19th century. Let us delve into the captivating history and architectural brilliance of The Breakers, exploring why it continues to fascinate visitors from around the world.
A Historic Legacy of Astor Family and Vanderbilts
The Breakers owes its existence to the influential Astor and Vanderbilt families, who left an indelible mark on American history. It was Cornelius Vanderbilt II, the grandson of renowned business magnate Cornelius Vanderbilt, who commissioned the construction of The Breakers. Vanderbilt II, along with his wife Alice Gwynne Vanderbilt, sought to create a summer residence that would rival the grandeur of European palaces.
The mansion's name, "The Breakers," is derived from its prime location overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, where waves crash dramatically against the rocky shoreline. Designed by Richard Morris Hunt, a prominent architect of the era, the construction of The Breakers commenced in 1893 and was completed in 1895. Its opulence and architectural brilliance stand as a testament to the wealth and extravagant lifestyles enjoyed by America's elite during the Gilded Age.
Architectural Marvel and Opulent Interiors
The Breakers stands as a shining example of the Beaux-Arts architectural style, characterized by its grand symmetry, lavish ornamentation, and harmonious proportions. The bridge was constructed in the 1930’s and it connects the city to Marin County. But apart from the stunning view, there are also other activities that you can enjoy like walking and bicycling as there are designated areas for pedestrians and cyclists. Elon Musk Signals Twitter’s HQ May Not Stay in San Francisco
It may not be long until Twitter will find a new home outside of San Francisco. This is based on the response of its owner, Elon Musk, on whether the social media company will remain in the city. It can be recalled that in the previous year, Musk also moved the headquarters of Tesla to Texas from California and this next step is not far from impossible. Twitter is currently under investigation after some employees filed a lawsuit saying that the company has violated several laws including overworking of employees and building code violations. If the movement pushes through, this can have an economic impact to San Francisco as more employees may lose their jobs or may need to relocate.

When Do You Need Custom Signs?
Tumblr media
Businesses, organizations, and properties occasionally need signs, but when and why might you need the services of a custom sign company in Las Vegas, NV?
You Need The Services Of A Custom Sign Company In Las Vegas, NV, When You Need A Sign That Identifies Your Business, Organization, Or Property.
There are a few signs you can buy pre-made and we will discuss those later, but when you need a sign that identifies your business, then you need to work with a custom sign company. After all, you can’t buy a pre-made sign that says, “Gonzalez Auto Garage” or “The #1 Thai Restaurant in North Las Vegas”, or anything else that’s specific to your business. Your unique business needs at least one unique sign that identifies and promotes it.
It’s best to work with a local custom sign company to make such signs. A local sign company can deliver your custom sign much quicker than one further away. You don’t want to have to wait—and pay for—a sign to be shipped across the ocean, or even state lines, when there are excellent sign makers in Clark County. Moreover, a local sign company can install your custom sign for you. This is a nice benefit for signs like acrylic signs and door signs, but it’s absolutely necessary for more involved signs like monument signs or cabinet signs.
A Custom Sign Company Can Create A Cohesive Aesthetic For Your Brand.
Signs that identify your business, promote your services, advertise your products, or brand interior or exterior spaces have to be custom made because they display custom information. But not all signs fall into this category. What about a sign that identifies a reception desk or that points to the restroom? It can benefit your business to have these custom made, too.
Having all your signs look alike presents a cohesive aesthetic. If all your signs use similar fonts, colors, patterns, and/or materials, your brand will come across strongly. A custom sign company can create a cohesive sign system for your business or property.
Las Vegas Custom Signs Is A Custom Sign Company In Las Vegas, NV.
At Las Vegas Custom Signs, we can make just about any custom sign you need. We are based in North Las Vegas, NV, and we offer all the services mentioned in this article and more. We design and manufacture custom signs in our North Las Vegas studio and we can install signs for clients anywhere in the Las Vegas area of Nevada.
