Day 1 ~ Introduction
Another start to @khoc-week and we begin with introductions! This year I will be focusing on Y! She’s an Oc near and dear that I haven’t focused on since the very first KH Oc week, though she’s been mentioned in others. Y begins her story in Birth By Sleep, where she is a Keyblade wielder training alongside the Wayfinder trio. Due to Xehanort’s plan though everything falls apart. And while the other three suffer their fates, Y is turned into a Heartless. For the time  between BBS and her return to the story she hides out in Castle Oblivion, keeping watch over Ventus. She comes into play once again during Days, where she finds new friends and her journey can begin again. Her main focus is usually helping out the heroes, while also trying to find her lost friends. But it all gets much crazier when she realizes she is a human incarnation of Light, a key piece in Xehanort’s game.
Tumblr media
Y has always been a challenging character for me, as I find her to be very much my opposite or at the very least incredibly different from me. She is a character who on her surface seems very happy and cheerful but harbors a lot of anger. I’m hoping to be able to explore more of that over this week.

But to have the queen, with all her many, many faults, avow her opposition to the Heartless and have her men ordered to fight them, is an excellent cap on the world's story, one I'm sorry to have missed all these years.
This brings to mind part of what made KH1 and KH2 so damn good: the consistency and cohesiveness in the universe. The Disney worlds and characters actually hold connections to the main KH-original plot, themes and concepts. In KH1 we get to see how every world responds to the appearance of the Heartless, with some of the characters even learning that their world isn't the only one and that this is a universe-scale threat. Traverse Town has working ties with Disney Castle and also holds some destroyed Disney world refugees, and Hollow Bastion is full of Disney villains and Disney princesses from across many different worlds. KH2 continues this with some of the Disney characters from Traverse Town migrating to Hollow Bastion which the entire digital world of Tron is tightly linked to, we see new worlds reacting to Heartless and now the Nobodies + Organization XIII, with more characters learning the wider scale of things such as Jack, Will and Elizabeth in Port Royal, and old worlds from KH1 still carry on with where we left them off - Hades still has command over Heartless and ties to Maleficent, Agrabah has concluded a lengthy time of rebuilding after the big Heartless invasion of it that Jafar led, Jack Skellington still remembers the Heartless and how they ended up not being so good for the holidays, and in Atlantica we even have King Triton reference his surprising knowledge of the Keyblade again. People like Mushu, Simba, Belle and the Beast are back in their own worlds but still remember how others exist through their time with Sora, Donald and Goofy in KH1, while Genie once again can be summoned in other worlds and now so can Peter Pan and Tinker Bell whom Sora befriended in KH1.
It's part of what makes KH3 so disappointing. While half of the time we'll still get good stuff like with the summons, Disney characters operating businesses in Twilight Town, Hades' link to Maleficent and the Heartless still being addressed, the Unversed responding to the negative emotion of all the leftover scream cannisters in Monsters Inc., and just about everything in the Carribean, the other half feels like the KH-original concepts and characters are just there in the Disney worlds and with the Disney characters but not actually leaving an impact on them. Andy's toys being put inside some kind of illusionary world, Heartless and Nobodies swarming across Corona and Arendelle, and a guy talking about freaking time travel in front of Big Hero 6 all get swept under the rug like "well, that happened". Maleficent and Pete just wander around aimlessly in search of a mystery box, not doing anything even when they find it. And the whole core 7 vs. 13 Keyblade War plotline largely just kind of ignoring Donald and Goofy for large periods of time while only focusing on the OCs plus Keyblade wielder Mickey and former Keyblade wielder Yen Sid (although Donald and Goofy at least get to temporarily kill Terra-Xehanort and help Sora kill Master Xehanort). It just feels like a game universe crossing over with Disney, rather than Disney within a game universe.
Yet Another "Kingdom Hearts" Revisit, Part 1
Against my better judgement (because once I start any of these games, it becomes an inescapable time sink until I finish), I started up another playthrough of Kingdom Hearts. Initially, this was just because I had the itch to revisit certain boss battles and never thought to create multiple saves at different stages of the story for easy access before, but inevitably, a fresh look has led to pondering the story - and, in this case, the gameplay.
Which leads me to Wonderland. Am I the only one who likes this world? Based on some of the comments I've seen, this may well be another instance where my utter lack of experience with video games outside this series works in KH's favor, as the only real platforming experience I have to compare it to is the Spyro the Dragon trilogy. But Wonderland really doesn't seem that bad. Sora and his Mickey Mouse shoes might have a little trouble on the mushrooms, but he can still get around. The different configurations of the Bizarre Room are fun to find and navigate, the puzzles are basic but enjoyable, and there's a good amount in this world to encourage revisits.
And I only realized on this playthough that, on the first revisit after Hollow Bastion, I hadn't ever checked back in with the Queen of Hearts and her cards. Wonderland has always been a nice slice of variety in the first game, having a villain who wasn't part of Maleficent's cabal. But to have the queen, with all her many, many faults, avow her opposition to the Heartless and have her men ordered to fight them, is an excellent cap on the world's story, one I'm sorry to have missed all these years.
I do have aesthetic objections to Wonderland; it doesn't look that much like the film and the Lotus Forest borders on the ugly with its color choices. And as marvelous a beginning to the "save the Disney worlds" quest as Alice's trial makes, and as good a hook her disappearance is, I have grown increasingly disenchanted over the years with her being one of the Princesses of Heart - but that's for another post.

Man, I love it when Canon validates some of my headcanons. I operate on the belief that Lucky Charm adapts depending on the wielder (and their allies) and would never give the wielder something they can't figure out how to use. Marinette is just a special brand of zany. Other Ladybug holders don't need to McGyver their Lucky Charms to be successful.
In the latest episode, Joan, while she is recorded in history as a brilliant strategist, is baffled at how Marinette uses her Lucky Charm. The implications on how differently Joan uses her Lucky Charm is amazing to me.
Adrien's giant mirror Lucky Charm is exactly what he asked for because he had a plan that was simple and direct. It later served a secondary purpose for Marinette to use on Reflektdoll, taking into account his ally. Then there's the perfume bottle which he just uses as an excuse to go to the Agreste Mansion without exposing his identity. Only Adrien could've cracked that one.
Alya immediately got a trash bin to defend herself with. The frying pan was something she was able to solve herself with a little encouragement. And she was having her moment of self doubt about not being as good of a Ladybug as Marinette... perhaps the Lucky Charm picked up on that and gave her something that would require Marinette's help.
Marinette, when she's under the effects of an akuma and couldn't think straight like in Psychomedian, is given a Luck Charm that Chat Noir can figure out in her stead. It also showed that Lucky Charms can also fail its intended purpose (so Adrien wasn't that bad at using Lucky Charm on his first try. His initial plan was just unsuccessful which happens even to the best of them).
And every time some akuma, sentimonster or other apparitions uses a bootleg version of Lucky Charm and it turns into some oversized sword (or gun in one case), it's because all they wanted to use it for is to cause harm (Anti-bug, Nightmare!Bug, Miraculer, Wax!Bug, SentiBug...).
Lucky Charm is more adaptable than people give it credit for, and it's not something only someone with Marinette's way of thinking could use. We mostly just see Marinette, who prefers to overcomplicate things, using it. One's objectives are actually taken into account whenever they're given a Lucky Charm, so it isn't as random as it seems. Ladybug holders don't have to do it exactly like Marinette to make it work.
On a side note, I feel validated because my future!Ladybug holder OC is more straightforward with his Lucky Charms, unlike Marinette. This opens up a lot of possibilities on how other Ladybugs operated. My portrayal is now a possible take in canon and I am living for it.
Yes! Marinette's particularly inventive and can make just about any random object work, but the Lucky Charm IS geared towards the particular Ladybug Holder, so any Holder should be able to use their object to great effect. Does make me curious how Joan used her charm though.

The Archon’s Review of SOULCALIBUR VI
SOULCALIBUR VI is the seventh installment of a venerable series of fighting games that started with Soul Edge. The series is created by BANDAI NAMCO Studios, more specifically by Project Soul. In the 16th century, rumors of a powerful sword, Soul Edge, have emerged. Many seek it, some to wield it in service to a greater cause, others in service to themselves. However, only a few know of the truth, that Soul Edge is an evil, soul-devouring blade that slays every wielder to comes into its possession. Fewer still know that Soul Edge has a twin, the spirit sword, Soul Calibur. In the midst of this turmoil, many warriors fight for good or evil, order or chaos, and future of the world and all its souls hangs in the balance...
Tumblr media
While I was never very good at fighting games in general, I consider myself passing skilled in the specific arena of 3d fighters. I’ve played the shit out of Soulcalibur II, Soulcalibur III, and even Soulcalibur IV. When I heard that another one of these was coming out, I was rather quite pleased, especially since it’s out on Steam.
So, in case you haven’t heard, the Soul Calibur series is a tale of souls and swords, eternally retold. In this case, it really is a tale retold, as it is a soft reboot of Soul Calibur, which came after Soul Edge. What this really means is that we get the tragic backstories of certain characters as they were told in SC, plus the tragic backstories of other characters as they were told in SCII and SCIII, and some stories were changed entirely, just for funsies, as far as I can discern.
“But Archon,” I hear you ask, “this is a fighting game. Story would have been shunted faaar down the priorities list; why are you talking at length about it?” And to that I would ask you how you got into my house. But also, I would say that the Soul Calibur series has always put a whole heaping helping of plot and story in its titles, and that story is often... interesting, but not skillfully executed, leading to some... peculiarities.
I’ll start with the main story. They call it “Libra of the Soul”, and it’s called such because it uses a set of scales (or “Libra”) as a metaphor for their moral choice system. So you’d think that if they’re naming the main campaign after the moral choice system, then that system would be executed well. You would be wrong, sadly. Basically, what happens is that every so often, usually after a fight, you’ll be presented with a binary moral choice. Some of them make sense, such as “Steal this defeated bandit’s weapon, or tussle his hair and tell him not to do bad things anymore”. But the decision that sets the tone, the very first one, in fact, is completely bonkers. See, you’re in a dream sequence, and you’re presented with two swords, one golden and one azure. You’re told that the golden one represents freedom and the desire to forge your own fate, while the azure one represents a desire to impose order and harmony on an inherently chaotic world; you’re then asked to choose one. Naturally, because I am a red-blooded, eagle-fucking, burrito bowl-eating American patriot, I picked the golden sword, after which the game literally told me that I was “Aligned with the darkness.” Oh I’m sorry, I didn’t realize that wanting to forge my own destiny made me a bastard! And there are plenty of other choices that the game boils down to either “good” or “evil”, despite being more complicated than that. Worse yet, the post-game content, as far as the morality goes, is literally just picking from those fucking swords over and over again. So why is it even here if it’s so poorly presented? Well, the only things of substance that seem to change if you’re good or evil is which of the two plot-important swords your character wields in certain cutscenes, and a particular line your character spouts after a post-plot optional fight. The game will tell you that certain optional fights are only available to characters who are either good or evil, but I don’t buy that, frankly. And certain weapons have an increased rate of scoring critical hits depending on your alignment, but realistically, you can just wield the one with the biggest average damage and you’ll be fine.
Tumblr media
(This question about fate is the only moral choice in the game with a neutral option, and frankly, it isn’t even really a moral choice, in my humble opinion.)
While Libra is the story of your OC (more on that in a bit), the game also infuses the main cast with individual stories of their own. And it even does something quite revolutionary for fighting games: it creates a central canon and has the cast all tie their plots around it, so that you don’t have a case where theoretically one character’s ending is just as canon as another’s, unlike most fighting games I’ve played and seen. However, this creates a couple of glaring issues. First, it means that the main cast can’t be fighting each other all the time, because they’re all in different places and times. To solve this issue, a not-insignificant number of plot relevant fights are against total randos who contribute nothing to the story. This contributes to the second issue, that is to say that any character’s plot outside of the main canon feels tacked-on and unnecessary. Most of the characters don’t even interact with the main macguffins at all. In addition, many chapters are extended dialogues instead of fights, which seems extremely misguided seeing as how we are here for the fighting. One particular instance that really got my goat was the character Zasalamel, who’s entire plot is given via monologue, without a single fight. It honestly made me wonder what I was even there for.
Tumblr media
(Now, when the game decides to go full cutscene, it’s pretty stunning)
So a fighting game has a poor plot; and in other news, bears remain Catholic. I bring attention to it, however, because SCVI just has a shitton of plot, more plot than is socially acceptable for a fighting game to have. This makes me wonder something. A thought, you see, crept into my brain pan as I traveled across the world map of Libra, stopping intermittently for plot-relevant fights and sidequests which I had little personal investment in. That thought being, “Would Project Soul be more comfortable just making RPG’s?” I mean, the Libra mode has all the trappings of an RPG: an expansive world map, random battles, tons of sidequests, weapon and item drops, a levelling system, and expansive scope, a binary moral choice system. And yet it was bound, or maybe cursed, to be a fighting game. So, Project Soul, if you guys happen to read this ever: Would you guys be more comfortable making RPG’s? Because I can’t speak for other people, but I would play the shit out of a Soul Calibur RPG. Just something to think about during the next company meeting when some bigwig from BANDAI NAMCO is droning on about how you’ve gotta make Sophitia twenty percent more “milfy” or how you’ve gotta make Siegfried sixty percent more emo.
So, lets veer away from plot and get more mechanical. I’ll start with the character creation; and let me just say that I’m actually more mixed on it now that I’ve had time to reflect. When you first create a character, the game gives you a list of fantasy races to choose from (my idea from when I was like, 13 years old, but go off I guess), and you can be as fat or as skinny as you want to be, and you can modulate your character’s voice to be however you want it to be. All in all, first impressions were good. However, I was disappointed to learn that you couldn’t be a female lizardperson. In fact, several races lack female options, which really irritated me, because I had an awesome idea for a lizardwoman character, but I couldn’t use the female clothing options to make that idea a reality, so I just had to use male clothing options and headcanon my own OC as a female, even though it said “Male” on her sheet. What chuffed me even more was the fact that you could have a female skeleton, skeletons being the one entity I could imagine skipping out on gender designations for. In addition, they still havn’t brought back the custom character styles from SCIII yet, nor have they allowed you to make your own, forcing you to use a pre-existing style, which, as has been stated before by better critics than I (notice me Yahtzee), is basically just crafting a custom model for an already existing character. This wouldn’t be a problem if they just brought back the custom styles from SCIII or let us create our own style in the vein of Mortal Kombat: Armageddon. However, the creator may be more robust than I give it credit for here; I did manage to make some characters that I thought were pretty awesome, and plenty of people have bent it toward the ever-noble goal of transplanting Pokemon into the Soul Calibur universe. Basically, if you want to create a fun and interesting-looking character, great. If you want to have a custom moveset, or if you wanna make a big-tittied lizard play a female lizardperson, so sorry.
Tumblr media
(Seeing this screen actually brought me no small amount of joy.)
Now, what about the mechanics of play? Well, this is the reason I, despite all my earlier criticism, really like this game. The fighting is solid, each move having appropriate weight and impact. The controls are responsive and smooth, even at high graphical settings (online play notwithstanding). Guard impacting makes a triumphant return after its apparent disappearance in SCV, although, it seems like the timing on it is a little more lenient than in previous installments. Soul Charging is its own little cutscene and knock-back effect, instead of SCII, where I remember Soul Charging being a liability that no one used. There’s also this new thing called a Reversal Edge, where you and your opponent both press a button and the person who pressed the best button wins. Okay, it’s a little bit more complex than that, as when the two players tie, they do it again, except verticals win, except if both players did a vertical, in which case the instigator wins, so the whole process ends up being like speed Rock-Paper-Scissors with extra rules. People seem mixed on whether this is a welcome edition to the formula or if it’s pointless and dumb, but I personally like it. If nothing else, it’s flashy as fuck. The move list also seems slightly more simplistic, although that could just be down to me finding all my favorite moves early.
Now for small potatoes and nitpicks! They changed many of the voice actors since SCIV, although, since I didn’t play SCV, I wouldn’t know if these are recent changes. While I really didn’t dig most of the choices, I will admit that Siegfried’s VA was spot on, capturing a sort of perfect middle ground between tortured hero and lovable wangsty-man. I remember liking the old announcer more too, although I fully admit to having nostalgia goggles on for that.
The amount of objectification of women in this game is frankly intense, although, if you’ve ever seen the models for the characters of Ivy the dominatrix or Taki the ninja, that shouldn’t surprise you. What may surprise you is that clothing damage is back, which is weird, because while in SCIV, clothing damage had a purpose, as certain pieces of clothing informed certain stats, it doesn’t seem to serve any mechanical purpose here. However, it does mean that the men can get in on the sexualization action too. In fact, I’ll tell you all a little secret: Raphael, the fencer, has a move that can tear off all the clothes of any other character, leaving them in their skivvies. Step one: Soul charge. Step two: Use the Triple Botta In Tempo (forward+vertical, then vertical vertical vertical vertical...). If you’ve completed step one, and the enemy hasn’t blocked, Raphael will do this kind of Zorroesque maneuver and wham bam thank you mam, all your opponents’ clothes fall off. Do it on Mitsurugi the samurai and...
Tumblr media
(Both of these characters are only based on the mentioned characters, but I hope it demonstrates my point. On the left, my Raphael-style character.)
One last point, and one that’s been made to death: the guest characters. While Geralt from The Witcher series made sense, being at least aesthetically consistent with the other characters, BANDAI NAMCO are apparently going to put in 2B from Nier: Automata, and frankly, that doesn’t make much sense to me, but I may very well be in the majority on this, so I won’t say too much more about it, since this gripe is even more subjective than usual.
To sum, would I recommend Soul Calibur VI? I would say so, if for no other reason than that the game mechanics are solid, and frankly, if I take the nostalgia goggles off, I have to admit that this one is the best Soul Calibur so far. In addition, this character creator is pretty robust, if you don’t mind not being able to do very specific things, such as making a big tittied lizard. While the unnecessary sexualization and weirdly grandiose story can bog things down for some, I’d still recommend it for the gameplay alone.
Tumblr media
(No big tittied lizards, but Pokemon/Human hybrids are okay. Sure.)

Please tell us more about THE GREAT PAN WHEILDER
• they were wandering about some old house when they tripped right next to an edge, tumbled off of it, and cannonballed headfirst right into The pot. haven't put that thing down since • their first active interaction with the horde of overseers following them was one of the iterators asking them to do a backflip • someone made a song consisting entirely of them nailing lizards on the skulls. NSH listens to it religiously
Tumblr media
• they are prone to running into walls. one time they pounced Directly into a wall that was like. 5 centimeters away from their face • they could oneshot Inv • despite the best efforts of like 50 separate iterators, Potscug has never gone into an iterator can. until they came across Pebbles of course ( ꈍᴗꈍ). animal magnet magnets • their left arm is so Fecking Stronk from constantly carryin n swingin that pan around that they could win an arm wrestling match against a red lizard. i believe in them • Potscug Has used the pan as a snowboard Once. they sailed far far away right into a crown of a tree and then needed help getting down • their wawas have a metallic echo to them cuz of the pot. one of the iterators almost broke down cuz of it, they couldn't stop laughing • the overseas iterators think that either an entire continent worth of demigod cousins has finally gone fucking insane or some kind of mythical beast has spawned into existence on the other side of the puddle • when i said they have the mindset of a truck i mean that they've repeatedly threw hands with red centipedes and king vultures. common sense Does Not burden the Potscug • the party-pooper iterators call them a threat to society (this includes Pebbles)

A random thought that popped up in my head for Pan Wielder was that they throw everything with the trajectory of a spear, the implication being they hit the item with the pan like a baseball
Imagine your just a lizard chilling then some random squid gets thrown into your face at mach 10

JKLDMCKLDSMGKLDSMCKMGK Potscug should get into the hall of fame of direct assault along with Gourmand at this point tbh

i like potscug he is very cool but....
can he cook????
Tumblr media
i read this initially while blasted a bit n all i could think about was them frying bubble weed... can he cook? well if y'want some goddamned fucken hot air, the creature sure can! pothead got u Covered
less blasted answer: i guess some iterator from the horde most likely tried teaching them how to use a pan in the intended way, however, as nature have desired, Potscug is unshakeably stupid. so they've probably been cookin rocks for a good bit
now here's a fun thought i've been pondering though: what if Potscug the mentor to Gourmand. but the thing is that Gourmand is, unlike Potscug, incredibly intelligent so he picks up on everything incredibly fast. so this Puppy Ball ends up being the more capable one

Who most commonly has an overseer following putscug, and who is responsible for the silly recordings to share around of potscug?
(The one responsible for the recordings doesnt count for the first question, I wanna know who doesn't record the Pitsligo but still follows em around alot.)
well, i imagine that anything the iterators witness gets recorded and archived, but i getcha i kno whatchu mean
Moon has locked an oversser on that bad boy the moment she heard about them and received their location. she has a window of them doin their horseshit live opened 24/7 to the side. she goes the least out of her way to record the bugger, but as an older sister she can hardly withstand the unstoppable need to sometimes send her youngest, easily annoyed brother funny cat pics
Tumblr media
Unparalleled Innocence is DEF the one who's constantly uploading Top 10 Potscug Scavenger Related Fails into the continental group chat. but then again I'd like to think someone is trying really hard to usurp her place as #1 Pan Wielder uploader. there's techno demigods cyberbullying each other over a very confused yet self-confident cat
Potscug is meant to be oc friendly too tho, so who knows! maybe some tumblrspawn iterator could triumph Moon's Hours of Indulgence in Free Potscug

Please elaborate on everyone's reaction when the pan scug went into Pebbles' can? (huh this is like the cat that sat on the lap of the one person in the whole room that hates cats)
-> Potscug makes it to the Precipice of LttM and FP -> everyone watching gets excited. they are ought to enter an iterator for the first time ever -> everyone is hoping it's going to be Moon because Fuck Pebbles. he's a party-pooper. the suspense is high. the tension in the online crowd is rising -> Potscug enters Five Pebbles -> all iterators tuned in:
-> a very confused Five Pebbles writes a singular message to the Potscug group chat. it only consists of "what the fuck." -> everyone present:
-> No Significant Harassment has the best day of his entire function
other than that Moon is happy for him even while he is yelling and physically wrestling the wretched beast out of his chamber (because ofc the Potscug immediately decided to throw hands with him) and makes him promise to send them to her as well. Sig is taking clips and sending them to reasonably amused Suns. Innocence is adding this to her long list of reasons to hate Pebbles' guts

I do have like... 4 iterator ocs so here's how I think they'd react to potscug:
WOGO: the only one who never heard about potscug, their taboos prevent them from even going to public chats unless its the triple affirmative.
RCITN: one of the party poopers, gave specific instructions to his 10 lizards to and I quote "KILL THAT WRETCHED THING ON SIGHT."
GOLD: man has memory issues so, probably forgot he has an overseer locked onto potscug. Occasionally gets jumpscared when the potscug screen feed pops up every now and then.
LWF: actively trying to yoink LTTM's and UI's titles. They want potscug to come to their facility, they definitely posted a 'Oooo big stretch' gif to the continent public chat at some point.
my sincerest condolences to WOGO, hell on this planet to not know about the Potscug. condolences to GOLD as well for the fate of Potscug FNaF simulator torment and goddamn, that sounds like a boss fight fuckin FJKLSAJKLDV the Pan Wielder vs 10 whole lizards. who's gon win? vote now!
also here's one for LWF
