Curse of Strahd Ask Meme Part 4
Part 1 | Part 2 | Part 3 | Original Post by @mandisawesome
///Spoilers Ahead!///
If your party hasn’t gotten the Tome of Strahd item yet or had a chance to learn why Strahd is so obsessed with a certain NPC, and you’re worried about spoilers, you might want to skip this post!
Question 4: Did your DM make any major changes to the module?
Yes! Well, some major, some minor. Aside from maybe making the encounters less brutally punishing, here’s what @inertia-raptor changed or added:
Tumblr media
From what I understand, a few DMs have decided to switch the roles of the Kolyanovich siblings, including ours. This is my first time playing the module so I can’t say for certain just how different it makes things, aside from making it a little more explicitly queer from the outset, and maybe determining which sibling you spend the most time interacting with at certain points. All I can say is I’ve grown very attached to our awkward little wizard Ismark, and I certainly hope he continues to manage to avoid his creepy vampire stalker.
Tumblr media
So in order to sail past any of the potentially problematic implications surrounding the whole Vistani thing, our DM just decided to...not include the Vistani. Now there is a clan of Tabaxi that is more or less on neutral terms with Strahd. We’re also pretty firmly in the camp of “tabaxi/catfolk are allowed to look like domestic cats if you want” which means that these tabaxi absolutely resemble domestic cats, and sometimes our actual pets will make cameos. It’s great.
Not all of the Tabaxi clan members in our game are catfolk--some are human/humanoid--but they are very much included among the Barovian Tabaxi clan that are permitted to traverse in and out of the mists, and sometimes work closely with Strahd. Inversely, a tabaxi from outside of this particular clan might get treated more nicely than adventurers other races if they were to end up in Barovia, but they’d kinda have to prove they were loyal to Strahd first if they wanted the same privileges as the native clan.
Significant NPCS that were written into the campaign:
Our DM wrote in a few OCs that have had a significant part to play in the game so far, and go beyond just fleshing out existing enemies or NPCs:
Tumblr media
Carden is one of those NPCs that was probably meant to be more for background flavour, but then our PCs got so damnged attached to him...We just can’t do anything in Vallaki without checking in on our good buddy Carden at least once. He’s been in Barovia 50 years now (and sadly left behind a human partner on the other side of the mists) and even though he can be a little scatterbrained, still has a good deal of knowledge about vampires, Strahd, and Vallaki that has been really helpful.
Tumblr media
So Sylras is our designated ally and we could not be happier to have them. When Carden fucked them up and couldn’t get Tatyana’s soul to bind to them, he made sure to have them given some kind of combat training before being made to send them to Castle Ravenloft, but he unfortunately didn’t think it was possible to teach Sylras how to express or even feel emotions. It kind of actually protected them from Strahd to some extent...they were still a failure in his eyes, but at least having no emotional response made tormenting them feel pointless (which is exactly as fucked up as it sounds).
Which is why we may have fucked up big time! Being with us and being treated like their own person has actually been making a difference in how they see themself and how they feel about Strahd and the way he treats people. So far we’ve taught them hatred, anxiety, betrayal, fear, self-doubt...we’re working on the nice emotions, alright!? It’s not easy when you’re in Barovia. Anyway Strahd apparently thinks that this is hilarious. Turns out, the more we rehabilitate Sylras, the more appealing they are as a target for Strahd to mess with. Whoops!!!
Thankfully we all love Sylras a lot and are ride or die for them which means we will absolutely do whatever it takes to protect them (so long as they don’t run head first into battle without telling us again nO WAIT SYLRAS STOP WHERE ARE YOU GOING--)
Tumblr media
Baby boy...baby... When I decided to play as Sy for the campaign, I told Malcolm that he could incorporate Joshua into the story however he liked if he wanted to, and man, did he ever deliver. I wasn’t quite sure what to expect, but the result has been a heart wrenching motivator not just for my PC, but for the entire party.
Poor Joshua was studying away from home to become a bard and wanted to surprise his dad with a visit when the mists arrived to bring him to Barovia. Strahd manipulated Joshua’s situation, putting him in mortal danger and then “saving” him by turning him into his spawn, then convinced him that Ravenloft was the only safe place for him to live in Barovia (not entirely untrue but...come on, dude, Barovia’s only unsafe because of you). Joshua thought of him like a kind saviour, and it was easy for Strahd to convince him to become one of his consorts. Strahd hasn’t made any sexual advances towards Joshua (yet???) and has told Sy that he wants to “preserve Joshua’s purity for as long as possible” which has easily got to be one of the creepiest things a middle aged ass looking dude can say to you about your kid.
Sy kinda had no choice but to leave Joshua at Castle Ravenloft even after their heartfelt reunion, but they still exchange letters. I write Sy’s letters in an adventure diary channel in our game’s discord server, and then me and DM discuss how Joshua would be able to respond and what sort of twist Strahd would give certain events to skew his perspective, which has been a fun/interesting bit of side story to have going on in the background of the main action.
Other changes:
Tumblr media
Adventurers love their naked bonding time, and our resident geologist said it was definitely plausible for someone to have discovered a geothermal spring somewhere in Barovia! So the story is, when Carden was setting up his alchemy shop, he was digging a well and...well. The hot spring was pretty useful for him as an alchemist, and his druidic knowledge of herbs and natural remedies meant that he could maintain a decent side business selling soaps, bath salts, and other bath related luxuries, so he went ahead and built a number of pools and facilities as a sort of side business.
Our party has made use of the hot springs several times, but for some reason, we always seem to ruin the relaxation with depressing discussion topics, stressful revelations, or...you know...not noticing one of the party members was actually absent, and the person who had been bathing with us for the past hour was actually Strahd in disguise. That was. A time.
I’ll be able to go into this more in a later post, but one more neat change our DM has made is that he set up a whole masquerade ball for us to go through, which was so much fun! He definitely put a lot of hard work and preparation into it, and we ended up playing several sessions of it, it was so eventful lol. For now, though, I think I’ll end this post, since it’s gotten pretty long! Hopefully it was a fun read, at least lol.

PACIFIC (DXPEDITION) TOUR ALMOST DID NOT HAPPENED (Update). Heli, DD0VR,
(along with XYL Bigi, DE3BWR) informed OPDX on Monday that their Fiji
“DXpedition ends here.” Heli explains that after two visits to the Fiji
Customs Bureau, and having endless discussions, the couple was told that
they would have to pay three times 1540 Fijian dollars (700 USDs) for
their transmitters & amp in order to take their equipment into the three
islands they planned to operate from (Fiji, Samoa and Tonga). So Heli/
DD0VR and XYL Bigi/DE3BWR then decided to make their trip a “normal
holiday” and pick-up their equipment on the way back to Germany. At
this point, they were very disappointed. However, on Wednesday, thanks
from some help by Tevita Navila (Telecommunications Authority of Fiji),
Tony/3D2AG and Bernie/W3UR of The Daily DX, Heli was able to retrieve
his equipment and was able to be active as 3D2VR from Fiji for a few days.
By the time you read this, Heli (along with his XYL) will be heading
to Samoa and should be active as 5W0VR from Samoa sometime between Sep-
tember 9-16th. Activity will be on various HF bands and modes. QSL via
DD0VR. Next stop will be Tonga, Heli will be signing as A35JY between
September 16-21st.
PJ4, BONAIRE (Reminder). Randy, K5SL, should now be active as PJ4/K5SL
from Bonaire (SA-006) until September 14th. Activity will be on 40/30/
20/17 meters using mainly CW, but possibly some 17 meters SSB. QSL via
his home callsign.

Curse of Strahd Ask Meme Part 9
Previous post | First post | Original post by @mandisawesome
Question 9: Did you attend dinner at Castle Ravenloft?
Sorta! As was covered in the last post, our DM @inertia-raptor decided to add in some additional flair and turned Strahd's dinner party in a full blown masquerade ball. Everyone got their own personalized invitation under their pillow (because that isn't unsettling whatsoever) and for the most part the party agreed on how to proceed. Which was not to, obviously. Like, fuck that guy; we've heard enough about him to know that we ought to stay as far away from him as possible. Easy choice.
...Except Sy's invitation included the phrase "my little songbird has told me so much about you," and Sy was therefore easily prepared to go completely by himself, because how dare this motherfucker.
Anyway that wasn't gonna fly with two lawful good characters in the party so they talked Dorian into going everyone agreed they should all help Sy make sure his kid was okay, and Ismark would stay behind in Vallaki where he would be "safe" and try not to get alcohol poisoning waiting for our return. The upside to all of this? Strahd wanted to make sure we were all dressed appropriately for the occasion, and provided plenty of fine clothing for us to look through, as well as...Sylras, who would be there to buy us any additional clothing items we needed, and would even teach the uncultured among us how to dance in the days leading up to the event before escorting us there. (Dorian helped with this as well, since he's not a backwater hick like the rest of us)
So since I didn't get to showcase exactly how fabulous everyone ended up looking for the masquerade in the last post, I decided to make that the artwork portion of this post! In order of in-game outfit reveal:
Tumblr media
Cinaed! He sure got his invite from Strahd and thought "fantastic! I get to go to a masquerade ball in a fancy castle! This Strahd feller might just be not so bad after all!" ...Until he saw some of the things written in the other invitations and decided that maybe this would be a good chance to politely teach Strahd some manners. Either way, our boy was sorely mistaken, and actually got SO appalled by the host's terrible manners that he nearly attacked the guy...twice! (Thankfully, his friends stopped him before Strahd noticed the second time, meaning Cin only got strangled by him once)
Tumblr media
Dorian could've easily really enjoyed a fancy ball and been the star of the evening, but in this case he spent most of the night wishing he were invisible...to the undead attending, at least. He probably wished his party paid a bit more attention to his presence that night (especially a certain someone), but instead he kept having to shake off a couple of very insistent vampire ladies keen on dragging him away from the ballroom. They were so insistent that at one point he had to be supervised for a while after one of them landed a successful charm spell on him. Poor guy did not feel very dignified after it wore off.
Tumblr media
Alasdair really thought he could just go to the masquerade wearing his religious vestments. Like a cleric of Kelemvor could really just show up to a ballroom half full of undead and it would be fine somehow. Bless his heart though, he was dedicated to helping Sy find Joshua, and managed to open up enough to try on some more frivolous clothing...even if they ended up being heavily influenced by his very unique tastes. Unfortunately, those tastes were very much appreciated by the Count, and Al was the first to fall victim to getting special attention from Strahd that evening...
Tumblr media
I cannot tell you how wonderfully entertaining it was during the sessions leading up to the masquerade arc to listen to the other players react, both in and out of character, to Sy procuring the different pieces of his outfit. It was seriously SO great and if it weren't for the beautiful way our party dynamic had started out, which pretty much guaranteed that Sy would behave closed off and distrusting to everyone, it wouldn't have been nearly as satisfying. The reveal was even better--not only was everything he bought incredibly camp, but he looked great as hell, and was extremely comfortable mingling with the other, potentially very dangerous guests at the ball. Sy was very motivated to find his kid, and knew he was walking into a den of vampires...to him, it seemed like a no brainer for him to sashay in there, neck exposed, and put on his best customer service voice to get as much attention (and information) as he could gather, and it honestly didn't matter to him what kind of bodily fluids he might have to part with to get what he needed.
And the best part was that from the outside, it made him look like the biggest, most selfish idiot who clearly needed rescuing, and he got in really big trouble with everyone for wandering off and letting himself be seduced and whisked away without consulting the party, and for setting aside looking for his own son just to get laid, and for being so gullible that he could've easily fallen victim to a vampire, etc. It was beautiful, honestly. I don't think I could have asked for a better response lmao.
Of course, the evening wouldn't have been complete without the NPCs wonderfully played by @inertia-raptor. I didn't draw everyone we ran into, but here are how Strahd, Sylras, and Joshua were dressed for the event:
Tumblr media
(Please forgive Sylras. They still had no say in what they had to wear. Not that they could tell that there was anything unsettling about it, but still.)

Curse of Strahd Ask Meme Part 6
Part 1 | Part 2 | Part 3 | Part 4 | Part 5 | Original Post by @mandisawesome
Question 6: Who is your/the party’s favorite NPC?
I decided to ask everyone who their character’s favourite is at this point in the campaign:
Alasdair’s favourite is Carden!
Tumblr media
This is obvious to pretty much everyone besides Alasdair and Carden themselves, lol. Despite Alasdair being sworn to eliminate all undead as desired by his patron god, Kelemvor, and Carden being...well, a vampire, the two of them actually have a lot in common, and Sy and Cinaed in particular are pretty invested in witnessing them warm up to each other. Dorian, however, is apparently on “team CinDair” and often interferes.
Cinaed’s favourite is Sylras.
Tumblr media
Cinaed’s natural desire to make friends and be kind and accommodating to everyone he meets is a significant reason Sylras has been able to quickly learn things like compassion and love and as a result they have become very attached to him. Cinaed now feels responsible for teaching Sylras how to navigate their new emotions, and has taken on the big brother mantle for their sake (and his own, if he’s being honest). They now hold hands pretty much everywhere they go and it’s SO GOOD.
Dorian’s favourite NPC is Ismark!
Tumblr media
Dorian readily flirts with just about any pretty face he runs into, but he definitely
enjoys making Ismark blush a little more than is typical. He’s also fiercely protective of him, to the point of forgetting to be scared by things that would normally have him hiding behind Sy or Alasdair if it means protecting Ismark from harm--even Strahd himself.
Sy’s favourite NPC (aside from Joshua, who is pretty much a given) was hard for me to choose, but I’d have to say it’s probably Carden.
Tumblr media
Sy has a lot of trouble trusting new acquaintances and can be abrasive and short as a result...and Carden is much the same way. He’s blunt and jaded and sometimes brutally honest, and Sy finds it pretty refreshing. He doesn’t flinch or try to lie when Sy asks him rude or difficult questions, and though he sometimes tries to soften the blow, isn’t afraid to tell Sy how things are in Barovia, or what to expect dealing with Strahd’s personality. As a result, Sy’s learned to trust Carden and accept the kindness he’s offered the party so far. There’s also a sort of unspoken solidarity between the two for various reasons, including past experiences with pariahdom, encounters with Strahd, as well as having someone under their guardianship taken away to Castle Ravenloft.
Plus Carden replaced Sy’s severed arm for him while simultaneously giving him the perfect ammo for countless dad jokes, so like, he wins best non-son NPC for sure.

Some miscellaneous discord emotes from the Curse of Strahd server, including a couple of non-module NPCs.
1 & 2 are Joshua, Sy’s teenage son whose bard apprenticeship got, uh, interrupted by the mists of Barovia shortly before Sy set out looking for him. He is 17 going on 18 but he’s still Sy’s Baby Boy and messing with him WILL result in Sy coming for your ass. And yeah, idk if you can tell but uh...Strahd sure did just that (he calls Joshua his “Little Songbird” just to play with Sy’s blood pressure).
3 is Sylras, an alchemical construct who is very slowly learning independent thought and how to process emotions. The story behind this emote is that Sylras typically can’t convey emotion with facial expressions, and our party, being the well adjusted group of functioning adults they are, got Sylras to furrow their eyebrows ever so slightly as everyone taught them the true meaning of hatred.
4 happened because Alasdair’s player convinced the DM to include what is essentially ye olde Barovian version of Pocky among the exotic treats offered for dessert at Castle Ravenloft, and Sy, having never seen anything like it before, repeatedly referred to them as “phallic cookies”, much to Alasdair’s horror. He later offered one to try and ‘comfort’ Dorian, who was having a rough night.
