bad day

Sebastian is still hunched over his desk, studying field notes and scribbling in the margins when he hears the front door open and slam shut. Immediately, he knows something isn’t right. Sloane is usually quiet when she returns to their little London flat, so much so that he doesn’t notice she’s home until she’s sneaking into his office to greet him, asking what he wants for supper (and playfully chastising him when he says her).

Today, however, Sebastian is left waiting. He shifts in the chair, perturbed by the disruption in their unspoken routine. It’s probably nothing—he thinks—maybe she needs to use the bathroom before coming to see him. Last week, he’d tickled her until she was flailing at him to stop before she had an accident. Sebastian softly chuckles at the memory, but the mirth fades as more time passes without her appearing in the doorway.

He stands, stretching as he makes his way down the hall to their bedroom. “I’m warning you now, love. If you’re in the bath, I will be joining you…”

Sebastian’s teasing words fade when he enters the room, his chest tightening at the sight of his fiancée curled up on the bed, holding a pillow to her face to stifle her sobs. He carefully crosses the space, tentatively sitting on the edge of the mattress before reaching out to touch her. Sloane flinches but gradually relaxes upon realizing it’s him.

“Sweetheart?” he says the term of endearment softly, rubbing his thumb across her shoulder. He attempts to turn her just enough so he can see her face. “You’ll suffocate like this.”

Sloane reluctantly pulls away from the pillow, revealing her tear-stained cheeks and watery eyes, her skin flushed from the effort of crying. Sebastian’s heart aches, and despite the longevity of their relationship, he’s at a momentary loss of how to comfort her.   After spending the last year apart at their respective apprenticeships, he’s gotten used to seeing her smile every day. He can’t imagine what could cause the shine in her expression to fade so drastically.

Did…did he do something to upset her?

The thought is gone just as quickly as it enters his mind. They’d agreed to never allow disagreements between them to fester, not after everything that happened during their years at Hogwarts. So…if not him, then what? Or who?

“Do I need to hurt someone?” Sebastian tries to joke, brushing the back of his fingers across her cheek to catch a few errant tears. Sloane shakes her head, with not even a hint of a smile. He frowns, swallowing thickly as he fights back the instinct to fix what’s broken. “Do you want to talk about it?”

Sloane sniffles.

“Do you want me to leave you alone?”

“No,” she says, quiet but emphatic. Her eyes flick up to meet his, and it’s like two miniature storm clouds—a mesmerizing sight, despite the circumstances. Sebastian offers a wry smile as he stretches out beside Sloane on the bed, swiftly wrapping his arms around her waist.

“Come here,” he whispers, cradling her to his chest. She exhales, still trembling as she leans into his embrace. He gently rubs his palm along her back and presses a kiss to the top of her head. “I’m here.”

Sloane tightens her arms around him and nuzzles her face against his shoulder. “Thank you.”

i think my favorite part of ghoul au is actually all the bullshit between sloan and pre-ghoul hancock. i love the weird power imbalance bc of the difference in their emotional investment. i love them trying so hard to Not have feelings, but accidentally being so so so sincere with each other. i love hancock being so angry and so sad with no where to put it, and sloan is like 200 years old, she's been through this so many times, this awful hopelessness and downward spiral

and she sees so much potential in him because he IS incredibly passionate about the things he cares about, and he obviously cares about people, and she tries so many times to get him to join the railroad to do Something, to make a positive difference in some ppls lives and feel like he is in control of his life

but he doesn't listen to her ! that isn't a solution to the Problems, how can you change ppls attitudes like that. how can you stop ppl like his brother from making certain people illegal. what's the fucking point.

but when he isn't being sad and angry and self-destructive, when he can put that stuff aside for a while and just be a guy, he is so much fun and he's beautiful and he has this natural charm and so sloan keeps spending time with him, and he keeps waiting at her apartment for her when she leaves to run synths out of the commonwealth and he looks at her like a puppydog every time she comes back.
