sick day

have a short lil drabble abt my ocs shaun and ry :) summary: rys sick, shaun has a family thing that she wants to skip to take care of him

Shaun frowns as she watches Ryland coughing up a lung. She’s attempting to put on her makeup before her family outing that evening, but Ryland’s illness is worrying. She knows he’s been just as sick, if not sicker, before, but she can never help being worried about him.

Shaun looks over at Ryland where he’s sitting up on the counter and hazily watching her. She frowns a little more and sets a hand on his knee, “You know I don’t have to go tonight, right?”

Ryland rolls his eyes a little and waves a hand dismissively. “It’s fine. You never miss your family outings, I’ll be just fine alone.”

Shaun snorts and rubs his knee a little before crossing her arms. “Baby, I can afford to miss one outing to take care of you. My dads’ll be fine without me this week.”

Ryland blows a raspberry. “I knowww, but I don’t wanna put you out or anything.” He says the last part a little softer, a little shyer.

Shaun gives him a sad look and sets her makeup brush down before gently cupping Ryland’s face. She tugs him down a little so that she can carefully press her forehead against his before talking softly, “It’s not putting me out if I want to stay home to take care of you.”

Ryland blushes a little and averts his gaze. He stays quiet for a long time before shrugging a little and kicking his feet out in front of himself a little.

Shaun frowns and carefully studies his face for a moment before pulling away a little so she can gently trace the bridge of his nose. “Poor baby,” she murmurs softly. “If you won’t let me take care of you, I’m at least gonna stay home to keep you company.”

Ryland half laughs and pulls away a little so he can cough before smiling weakly at her. “There’s really no stopping you from staying, huh?”

Shaun smiles brightly and pushes his hair away from his forehead before standing up on the tips of her toes to kiss his forehead gently. “Duh!” she says before starting to put away all of her makeup. “Have you ever met me? I always get what I want!”

Ryland laughs again and rolls his eyes before carefully hopping off the counter. “You’re a dweeb. ‘M gonna go lay down.”

Shaun smiles and reaches for his hand to squeeze it for a moment.  “I’ll be there in a minute to keep you company!”

Ryland smiles and nods, leaning down to kiss her temple mindlessly. After he pulls away, he sneezes and frowns a little to himself before rubbing at his eyes as he walks into their bedroom.

Shaun smiles fondly at him and quickly finishes putting her things away. Once she’s done, she walks into their room while stretching a little. She melts a little when she sees Ryland snuggled up under the covers, half asleep, with their cat lounging by his head. She smiles a little more and carefully crawls into bed next to him. She shushes him a little when he starts to stir and quickly snuggles up closer to him. She reaches up to gently scratch his head in order to try and lull him fully to sleep. She knows she really should text her parents to let them know she won’t be able to make tonight’s outing, but she’d much rather give all her attention to her boy right now.

he does, mostly when the feeling is Extra strong. usually, the feeling that hes like his father is something that he can manage on his own n he can kind of talk himself Out of feeling that way. but when that feeling gets very large and overwhelming, he talks to her about it! and shauns always veryvery supportive. she Tends to lean towards tough love, but since ry can be kind of sensitive, Especially when hes already hurting, she does like. Diet Tough Love. shes gentle with him and lets him panic and cry if he needs to, and she’ll pet his hair n sing to him softly until he calms down enough for her to be able to talk to him with him actually like. Processing what shes saying. and when hes calmed down enough, she reminds him of how he couldnt be Further from being like his father and how the fact that hes concerned about being a bad person is what makes him Not bad and that hes kind and gentle with people and is very good at removing himself from situations that make him mad before he gets Too mad. and once shes done explaining that hes a Good Person, she smiles at him n kisses his forehead n tells him that she loves him :)

Love is all consuming, some would say. It'll make you stupid and obsessed, unable to focus in anything at all. Shaun respectfully disagrees, having a stronger boundary on equally spreading out her time. Ryland tries to agree too, most of the time.

But, he'll be damned if sometimes the slender silhouette of his lover, his best friend, his everything, doesn't encompass him and swallow him whole. It'll make him dizzy and ditzy, like a schoolgirl who twirls her hair and pops bubblegum, who writes her and her first love's names in a heart.

aw, thank you!! making moodboards is always so fun to me, i love figuring out how to organize them n everything :) i’ll gladly tell you all about ryland in bullet point form!! (tw for abuse mention in the sense of like.. all i say is that It Happened)

hes bi And non binary! (he primarily uses he/him pronouns, but he really enjoys they/them pronouns too)

hes the second youngest of the carlton family (lucas being the oldest, jennifer being the second oldest, and kylee being the youngest) (rys only older than kylee by about 5 minutes tho)

hes from a very tiny town in colorado called creekwood (its an entirely fictional town, hehe)

he has asthma

he was diagnosed with lung cancer when he was about 5 years old, but was found to be in remission by the time he was about 7!

he was a really shy, nervous kid growing up n was bullied a lot because of it

his father was very abusive towards him growing up, n it took ry a Long time for him to feel like he was healed from it

he started getting into drugs when he was ~14

most kids in creekwood did the same bc theres fuckn Nothing to do there But drugs

ry rly struggled with sobriety for most of his 20s, but he finally went to rehab in his late 20s n managed to Stay sober!

he moved out to the “big city” (aka denver) for college n met n started dating this guy, hunter, who turned out to be... very abusive

he left him when he was ~22 n moved out to new york to stay with his sister, kylee!

a couple years later, he met his partner, shaun diaz :)

their relationship was very tumultuous n filled with lots of up n downs that would take me a while to explain! i am planning on writing a book/maybe a short series of books about them someday in the future, we’ll see, hehe

a little while after him n shaun got married, he finally got Officially diagnosed with depression and got onto medications that did a World of help for him

him n shaun eventually had two kids! first, their son, evan, n then three years later, they had their daughter, raleigh!

their son was diagnosed with autism fairly young, n because him n shaun noticed a Lot of similarities between ev and ry himself, they got ry in to be tested too, n what do you know! he got diagnosed with autism too!

aaaand thats about all i can think of right now :) theres the gist of ry :)

boy howdy, i would Gladly tell yall abt my babes!!

ok! so! ryland elias and kylee elizabeth. aka the carlton twins. i first made kylee in about 2014, and ryland came into an existence about a year later, so they r my actual gd kids (fun fact, when i First made ryland, he was kylees twin sister named catherine ryland. honestly? ryland the way he is now has only been in existence for nearly a month). born and raised in southern colorado, theyre the youngest siblings of the carlton family, ryland being just a few minutes younger than kylee. they have two older siblings, the oldest being their brother, lucas, and the second oldest being their sister, jennifer. the twins both have mad daddy issues cause their dad? is shit. but between the two, ry’s got Far more issues, mostly stemming from their father constantly comparing him to kylee. growing up, kylee was always the more popular one that, like, Everybody liked and, when they were kids, they looked almost exactly the same, which resulted in ppl mixing them up a LOT and being super disappointed when they realize theyre talking to ry (more often than he’d like to admit, someone would come up to him and start talking to him, and hed get super excited until he turned his head just enough for the person to see his birthmark. when they’d walk away from him, like, right away, the disappointment? crushing)

now. im gonna go into a lil more detail abt each of em individually. kylee? a total bitch. an absolute heathen. shes a bitchy, egotistical jock. shes always been one of those Popular Kids who would make fun of anyone and everyone (basically, just think of like. a slightly more muted regina george). shes been a huge jock ever since she was a little kid. basically, think of a sport that schools have teams for, and i guarantee you that she played them. as a super little kid, she was a huge tomboy—she had short hair, constantly wore sports jerseys, an absolute goddamn rough and tumble bratty kid. as she grew up, tho, she got more in touch with her feminine side. she grew her hair out, dyed it pink, threw out her wardrobe, and started wearing more feminine clothes. she’s far happier now that she’s let herself be more feminine, and its also a nice ego boost when she kicks the ass of some dude who underestimated her for being so feminine. basically, she is the most cutthroat bitch you will ever meet, even if she doesn’t seem like it. she’ll ruin your life if you get on her bad side, or if you fuck with ryland. she straight up cares more about starbucks than most people. but if you crack down her defenses enough, shes secretly a very sensitive sweetheart who would die and kill for the people she loves

now, ryland? completely different than kylee. hes an absolute goddamn angel. a flirty as shit bastard angel, but an angel nonetheless. as a kid, his dad gave him a lot of shit for being “too girly,” when in all actuality, ry was just an emotional kid who just really liked the color pink and playing dolls with his sisters. he absolutely loves love though. the thought of Actually falling in love scares the shit out of him bc hes afraid of being in a relationship similar to the one his parents have (whether he would be his mother or his father in that potential scenario, he doesnt know. and he doesnt know which would be scarier for him). but hes just the biggest sucker for seeing romance. hes the type of guy who, when hearing about someone getting engaged, hes Gotta know all the details—was their a speech? did anyone cry? how romantic was it? hes a complete and utter cheeseball. despite all that, hes got a major fear of intimacy, and ends up flirting and sleeping around just to avoid his Feelings (basically, just picture parts of him as buck 1.0 but like. less of a fuckboy, but same amount of dumbass, yknow?). despite always being second best to kylee, he still loves her with all of his heart and soul. and despite all the heartache and trauma hes gone through, hes still got a soft heart thats full of love for all of his siblings
