#oc: iris trevelyan

Oohh this one's a tough one - I've made so many OC's for so many fandoms so I'll settle for the first real OC I made for Dragon age, and that's probably Iris Trevelyan actually.

Like yes I played DAO and DA2 but I feel like I didn't really start making up intricate headcanons/ideas for fics until I played DA:I.

Iris in my first DA:I playthrough actually romanced Cullen. And I could not tell you how it started, but eventually down the line, I thought back to how much I loved Alistair in DA:O and how excited I was to see him back in DA:I. Then my brain was like 'okay now make them kiss'. Why Iris specifically and not another Inky? Couldn't tell you.

Iris's story is cool to me bc I wanted her to be this really serious researcher/academic. Actually, she was SUCH an academic, I headcanon she was one of the pioneers of early neurology in Thedas. She essentially pioneered research neurosurgery in order to map out the functions of different nerves in the body. The way she did this was she used a metallic probe to conduct little currents of lightning magic to stimulate different parts of animal/human brains, to map out the peripheral nervous system (okay, if I stimulate this part of the brain, the right leg twitches, etc.). She also used the same technique to ablate certain parts of the brain to see what deficits would result if you destroyed certain regions of the brain - localizing where speech, and understanding language, memory, personality, vision, coordination, etc. are stored. She's published several manuscripts on these subjects. Iris had to fight to be able to do said research and spent a lot of time under Templar guard when she was doing her experiments, especially since they usually required live subjects.

And as I was making her I was thinking like, how interesting would it be to see this hyper-focused academic taken out of her little bubble, put up on a religious pedestal, learn to play the game (courtesy of her bffl Vivienne), learn to navigate politics and things on a grander scale than her little laboratory in the Circle tower, achieve all these great feats, and then ... what happens next. When Corypheus is defeated and all is said and done, does she go back to being a mage-scientist? Can she even go back to doing that?

And thus I started thinking about her and Alistair together. And the political turmoil in Thedas post-Corypheus and how to navigate that with an Inquisitor who is so forever changed by what happened. She felt like she had to keep everyone at an arm's length during DA:I in this fic-idea, so she doesn't even end up romancing Cullen (though I imagine he might have pined after her for a bit ... lel).

The angst of pairing her with an Alistair who's Warden love broke up with him before the final battle and then DIED. Too good. When I have time I definitely need to actually write this fic because it's like...haunting me lmao.

I think I love Iris because she definitely has a bit more of a vindictiveness to her than my other OC's. She harbours a lot of resentment towards her ultra-Andrastian family for basically disowning her - going so far as to blame her mage gifts for ruining her younger sister's future marriage prospects, to using her name for clout in social circles once she becomes the Herald. She does NOT take well to that and refuses many of their attempts to reconcile. Girlie can hold a grudge. It gets even worse when they catch wind she might be marrying into royalty and they're trying to get her to find favourable matches for her sisters.

And now I'm thinking of the insanity of potentially throwing Sebastian Vael, Prince of Starkhaven into the mix (among Alistair and Gaspard). Oh man. Someone stop me ;-;

Other things about Iris:

She's TALL! 6ft 1., lanky/athletic build (from training as a Knight Enchanter with Viv), and prefers storm magic when she's not in the thick of the fight.

I'm still debating if I want to keep her hair black. Previously, I wanted both of her eyes to be a bright Fade-green, but I think I'm actually going to change that. Her left eye, the same side as the mark (i think) is like a bright fade-green, her right is grey. She's ... intimidating to say the least. Iris has a fairly commanding presence. I think she's sweet at heart but a lot of that has been lost given the life she's lead.

Maybe a certain King of Ferelden can soften her back up again!

My Daisy worldstate- a summary ;

Daisy ~ floral name symbolizing new beginnings and loyalty

City elf archer rogue warden, she grew up losing everything dear to her while she lived in the denerim Alienage. After years of violent vigilante work, a ruined relationship, losing her best friend, finding her mothers body right after her murder, avenging her mothers death and almost being forced into marriage with a man, Duncan recruited her as a warden, saving her from the city elf life and giving her a second chance.

After the Blight, Daisy reunites with her best friend after thinking she was dead for a very long time, she then later goes into the forest and starts the life she always wishes she could have had. She becomes a polymath of self sufficiency. Making her own clothing, growing her own food with her little farm and garden, and with her new found passion for woodworking she builds everything with her own hands, her log cabin, her bows, her furniture. Everything.

She starts a mabari rescue for disabled and elderly combat dogs, seeing too many dogs being used and abused during her warden recruit days, she felt like she had to do something to help them and give them a home.

For the rest of her days, she tries to live a quiet life, finally having learned to love and trust again, living close to her best friends and their children, they become like a small family, and she truly feels like she's living for a purpose, not just for survival.

Iris Hawke ~ Floral name symbolizing trust and valor

A half elf dual-wielding rogue originating from the Denerim alienage, at a young age Iris was taken by mercenaries hired by Daisy's father, after finding out about their relationship, he wanted her to disappeared, instead of killing her the mercenaries took pity on her and dropped her off far away, in a clearing near Lothering. For safety reasons, she could not go back to the alienage, so she was in the care of the chantry and then adopted into the Hawke family. Even if she wanted to return to her family in the alienage later in life, they unfortunately died to the blight.

Having lost her adoptive mother, who was really the only family member she felt an attachment to, to mages, it made Iris go down a dark path of mage hatred.

After the the kirkwall rebellion, Iris and Fenris are on the run for many years, while on the run she meets the inquisitor, who turns out is also her biological half sister. Her sister being a mage made it so it was very rocky at first, but the more they spoke the more they helped each other heal and understand the world.

Years later, Iris and Fenris settle down in a small home in Ferelden near family.

Calla Trevelyan ~ floral name symbolizing sympathy and union

Having lived a truly privileged and sheltered life, Calla, a highly trained mage from a noble family, grew up having everyone doing everything for her with the flutter of an eye. Having to then flee the circle, Calla is forced to start being more self reliant and trusting in her self.

Falling into the role of the inquisitor and falling in love with a templar of all people, she learns that life is beautiful and worth fighting for, and if she wants it done right, its best to do it herself.

During Calla's hunt for Corypheus, Varric introduced her to his close friend, the champion of Kirkwall. After getting to know eachother and talking about their home lives, they figured out that they are related, even more, they are half sisters.

Once Coypheus was defeated, Calla stayed in touch with Iris, with their collective life experiences, Calla has truly learned how to be a better selfless person through Iris, and Iris's hatred towards mages had truly diminished throughout the years through Calla.

Years later Calla, Cullen, their child and dogs find a home near Iris and fenris in Fereldan.

Yarrow Aldwir ~ floral name symbolizing bravery and courage

A Veil jumper mage originally from the Denerim alienage, as a toddler she was kidnapped from a man who sold children on the black market but she was then rescued, and her kidnapper murdered, from the alienage vigilante, Daisy Tabris.

When the blight hit, her and her parents escaped to safety, but her parents were never the same. They became paranoid, to the point where when Yarrow would want to go outside to play with the other children, they would lock her in her room for days. Yarrow had enough, and escaped in the middle of the night.

Being a very intuitive and curious mage, she left her home and set out to explore as much of the world as she could. She later on joined the veil jumpers as she was very attracted to the idea of the exploration of ancient elven ruins. being obsessed with the thought of being a hero due to her idolization of her childhood hero, she tried helping and saving as many people as she could, even if it put in her high risk dangerous situations. People caught on to this fact and started taking advantage of her, to the point where she eventually cracked and almost killed a fellow veil jumper with her own hands.

Yarrow then learns that aiming for the life of a hero is not for her, she is tired of being taken advantage of so she turns to a more chill life, deciding that sticking her passion for research and experimenting and smoking a pack a day is more her speed.

Until she meets a certain scout and falls in love at first sight, not being able to say no to her in her request to find Solas.

After the events of having to fight the gods, Yarrow and Lace move back to ferelden, and having stayed in contact with Calla after the events of the war, they moved to a home not too far away from them. Yarrow and Lace continue exploring and looking for new discoveries, a genius theorist and the best scout out there, they make for a great forever team.

bio: the trevelyans, despite originating from antiva, are one of the most prominent noble families of ostwick. because of their strong ties to the chantry, the family does not hesitate to send their children to the circle when they discover the gift of magic. luca felt betrayed when he was sent away at just 12 years old and left on bad terms with his mother, who he was extremely close with. growing up with his father's strong disdain for magic and fearmongering from the templars caused luca to develop a fear of his own magical abilities. luca's mother passes away from illness before luca has a chance to reconcile, intensifying the guilt, fear, and nightmares he already suffered with. before he was even considered to do his harrowing, he begs the templars to make him tranquil so he won't be a threat to anybody, and won't have to further deal with his pain. when kirkwall's circle rebelled, ostwick quickly followed suit, and luca was forced to join the rebels for his own survival. he eventually joins the senior enchanters at the divine conclave as an unbiased voice. when the anchor is accidentally fused with luca's hand, his severed connection with the fade was restored, curing him of his tranquility. after being tranquil for a decade, luca must relearn how to live, how to feel, and how to be a leader, as he's thrust into reverence as the only hope to save thedas.

bio: growing up, lilith had always had an immense and dangerous fascination with magic, and desperately wanted to learn it for herself. but there is not much a lowly street urchin can do when your main focus is surviving the day in a dirty, corrupt city. despite the hardships, lilith will always try to steal magical trinkets and tomes to try to teach herself magic. perhaps if she was strong enough, she would be able to make enough money for her and her mother to have a real home. however, lilith was caught stealing from a powerful noble, and - in a desperate attempt to save her daughter - lilith's mother takes the blame, resulting in her being cut down before lilith's very eyes. months pass and lilith is suddenly approached by a ghostly voice, claiming to be the spirit of her deceased mother. her mother's spirit says that she returned to watch over her daughter, and will be willing to teach her magic if lilith does what she is told. lilith accepts immediately, and is ecstatic that she is getting to two things she wants the most - her mother, and magic. unbeknownst to lilith, however, this apparition is not her mother. it is instead a fiend, taking advantage of a grieving orphan with a strong desire for magic, in order to manipulate her into doing its bidding. the fiend's goal is to feed lilith so much power that she eventually goes berserk, wreaking as much havoc as possible before she inevitably loses herself to the very magic she longed for.

For Ravonna, I chose something more angsty and serious, as I'm currently writing the chapters where she will eventually be forced to come face to face with her grief. The song I chose is "The drug in me is you" by Falling in Reverse. This is like her angsty anthem in WYGTYA! The lyrics really represent how she refuses to deal with unpleasant emotions and to always hide behind the "cheery, fun bard" mask. Also, the last line could be an exploration of her feelings towards being the last dragonborn.

I've said it once and I'll say it again, "Iris" by The Goo Goo Dolls is Miraak's song! The pining!! The softness!! The suffering!! And these lyrics really fit into his arc of how he wants to get rid of the 'Miraak' persona once and for all because that's not who he is. He doesn't want the world to see him as 'Miraak' because they wouldn’t understand. They don't know what he's been through and how he was forced to join the Dragon Cult and become their leader. He wants people to know who he really is. And he is Fenrik, the healer from Atmora with a heart that is too soft.

For my beloved Hjaldir (who *will* be in my fic at some point, I promise), I think that the perfect song is "Slipping through my fingers" by ABBA. As of where the story is now, we don't really know what happened to him. For Max Trevelyan, I chose "The little things give you away" by Linkin Park. Wow, I really woke up today and chose angst, but these lyrics really fit with his family and how disapproving they are of him even just for the fact that he exists. And how becoming the Inquisitor and the one with the ability to close the rifts was the best think that happened to him, because he finally cut ties with his family. Really ironic, considering that The Anchor was slowly killing him. BUT HE IS FINE NOW, LIVING HIS BEST LIFE WITH HIS HUSBAND AND HIS ORANGE KITTY.

And for Aedan Cousland, I went with the angsty option again. I chose this wonderful song called "Burning Daylight" by Dion Cooper and Mia Nicolai. This song could fit with several ocs of mine, but it encapsulates Aedan's feelings towards his dangerous quest and being a grey warden. It perfectly encapsulates the pressure of wanting to be a grey warden to honour his father's deathbed wish, but hating every part of being a grey warden, especially how everyone in the order hid the gory details from him before he joined. He feels like he is running out of time, but he wants to burn daylight, he wants to slow down and just live, while he still can.

In an attempt to prevent Jowan from being subjected to the rite of tranquility, she decides to help him. Bio: The eldest child of Malcom Hawke and Leandra Amell, Amaris Hawke, has lived in many places in Ferelden due to her father, sister, and herself all being apostates. While raising her sibling, she taught herself how to be a rogue, out of fear of being caught by the tempalars. Despite the age gap of 7 years, Amaris was extremely close to her siblings, and was more of a mother to them than a sister. Bio: Katari Adaar “Weapon of death” lived most of her life as such. Her parents, two Tal-Vashoth warriors, rigorously trained her to not let emotions cloud her judgment, and not to think of herself, only of her mission. After Katari’s sixteenth birthday, she joined the Valo-Kas mercenary company and quickly made a name for herself as a very skilled, resourceful, and capable soldier, and leader. Katari is a very traumatized and emotionally repressed woman, who catches Cole's eye. Throughout the base game, jaws of Hakkon, and The Descent, Cole slowly breaks down her walls and helps her work through her trauma, and as they spend time together they both end up falling for each other. This is something Katari deeply struggles with, but in-between Corypheus's death and tresspasser they finally end up in a relationship, but dont fully work everything out until during/after DA:V.

Kierra lived in relative peace, until shortly before the conclave. A dear friend of hers, Yenna Trevelyan, found her way to Kierra's home, but died shortly after due to her wounds. Kierra decided to assume her identity to see what was going on with the templars and mages. She barely missed the explosion, and decided to join the inquisition.

Bio: Kierra Rutherford, witch of the wilds, daughter of Flemeth, is better known as Yenna Trevelyan, despite having no connection to the Trevelyans. When she was young About 13, a chase with a group of templars nearly got Morrigan, her younger twin, caught. Kierra managed to help Morrigan escape, but was caught herself. The templars decided that it was not wise to keep her so close to Flemeth, and decided to move her to the Ostwick Tower. Kierra was quickly made tranquil due to her constant successful escapes. Eventually, she was touched by a spirit of curiosity, and hid that she was no longer tranquil, until she managed to escape that night.

Kiera then decided to live a life similar to before she was captured, earning her the title of “Witch of the Freemarches.”

One OC I want to flesh out more is my mage F! Trevelyan Iris who I ship with hardened King! Alistair

I imagine her as a bit of an Ice Queen lol. She resents her family for giving her up to the Circle, essentially disowning her for being a mage and losing the life she had. She was determined to outperform everyone’s expectations in the Circle and rise to the rank of senior enchanter faster than anyone had before. She worked and studied to catch up to the other initiates as her powers manifested later in life (like 12,13 ish).

She doesn’t end up romancing anyone in Inquisition because she’s just focused on doing The Job. She has a tendency to abandon herself in pursuit of her goals (also never had any relationships or friendships in the circle).

All of a sudden, fresh off the trauma of Corypheus’ defeat, this emotionally constipated academic gets put into a situation where she’s forced to choose between Gaspard (ew) and Alistair (YEAHHH) in terms of a political marriage for either of the nations to take advantage of her name and relationship to the Divine. And to influence the decision to disband or keep the inquisition.

I imagine Gaspard would want to keep the Inquisition alive and well and absorb its forces into as an extension of the Orlesian army. Alistair/Fereldan want it disbanded because they see it as a threat but they want the Inquisitor on a leash in terms of all the information their organization is privy to and the Inquisitor’s influence.

I think there’s going to be a lot of distrust on her part with any kind of romantic intention from Alistair. Not just because she knows exactly why the marriage proposal came, but because she sees herself as fundamentally unlovable. She’s too closed off, too hard, too quiet, she’s a mage (coming from a heavily Andrastian family that made her feel like her magic was the worst thing that could ever happen to them).

Alistair himself carries a lot of resentment, because back when they saved Ferelden together, the Landsmeet would never accept Amell as Queen (even though she was from a noble family). But all of a sudden they’re chill with the Inquisitor being queen even though she’s a mage because she has the fancy ‘herald of andraste’ title. Amell, his first love, is gone, and he never really got over that. So he doesnt make much of an effort to actually.. woo her for a long time. He just does the bare minimum to get his advisors off his back.

I imagine Gaspard will try and pull some Orlesian ‘Games’ to pit them against each other, and make her accept his offer instead so he can more easily push into Ferelden. Maybe forge some letters? Reveal some dirty secrets? Who knows.

I think its going to be a struggle to write a fic with lots of political tension but Im looking forward to it.

Okay so I just hit 30 tags talking about my DA mages. It might be that I need to talk about them again. (HyperFocus Engage!)

Note: I have a headcannon that all mages have an element they're drawn to but circumstances can influence it as much as personality etc.

Origins

Domynic is naturally fire and seizes being a blood mage as soon as possible. He wants to be powerful and in charge (so no one can hurt him again). He is all about that DPS life.

Domynic Amell and Irys Amell (Twins!)

Irys is water/ice naturally and pushes herself to be a healer. She wants to be a calmer soothing presence like Wynne but gets so angry...! She's more support/DPS.

They both have a natural tendency towards damage and anger, but Irys refutes it and Dom embraces it. They are my "actually opposites" twins.

Zerdali and Jezper Surana (Twins!)

Jezper is Earth naturally and very defence focused, becoming an arcane warrior to protect his friends. Think tank over support.

Zerdali is a natural spirit healer and lightning mage (she's supposed to be super powerful to Jez's average power). She went to the tower long before her brother and goes very strict arcane and creation, but becomes a shape shifter when she's given the freedom to choose and she can do real damage(!). She's more of a "dark" healer?

DA2

Abigael Hawke is my baby. She is my most OC ever. She is a Primal Mage by birth (lightning and earth combined) and very very powerful. (I like powerful electric mages, leave me alone).

She has no real healing talent but essentially forces the fade to let her be a spirit healer in a life or death situation. She heals with a spirit of Duty, not Compassion or Love or anything.

Aislynn Hawke is a spirit healer naturally but her weakness and connection to Creation and spirit school makes her feel so weak. She becomes a blood mage for the power. (I was playing an ill conceived hard run...)

Evelyn Hawke is a "people person" aka a manipulator. She is also a healer because people like that, but she's entropy and ice to the core. You ain't touching her.

(2's way of leveling means I had to choose something and healer is better than blood mage so ta-dah loads of healers...)

Inquisition

Jenavieve Trevelyan is a messed up lady with a lot of baggage. She is another natural healer but because Inquisition threw away spirit healer, she is spirit and ice. She doesn't do damage for a long time as she levels, just mind blast and generic attack.

When choosing her specialism she tries necromancer but (I don't like playing that school and Dorian is usually in my party taking care of that)... But! Her spirit healer spirit is upset so she stops. She embraces being part of the action so she can heal more effectively and becomes a Knight Enchanter.

Hissera Adaar

Hiss was born under the Qun and trained there for the start of her magic, which meant damage, damage, damage and forced her into fire primarily.

She was always a blunt weapon so when given the chance she goes down the subtleties of Rift Mage and study.

Elenansal Lavellan

The narrative foil of Hissera, Elenansal was coddled and raised to be a fine instrument of magic as the only other mage in the clan other than the keeper. She is precise and elegant and tends towards controlled lightning and ice.

When given a chance, she went full damage and sized on taking Arcane Warrior (Knight Enchanter) because that's Elven gosh darn it and she is a keeper by right! Also means she gets to release a lot of rage and frustrations out with a big sword.

So uh yeah

I have lots of thoughts about my mages (and my rogues and my warriors), too many for tumblr tags. And yes I know they're all OP and a bit Mary Sue but Cringe is Dead and they are the main damn characters in a game, they're allowed to be OP, so shush.
