Background:

Born into the Shimura Clan to his shinobi father, Danzō joined the newly established Academy and was amongst the first few hundred of students to graduate. Ever since his genin days he has been friend with Hiruzen, whom he considers his rival in everything.

During the First Shinobi War, Danzō is part of the Escort Unit alongside Kagami Uchiha, Torifu Akimichi and Team Tobirama.

On one of their missions, during which is said that a member of their team has to sacrifice themselves as a decoy in order for the rest of them to escape, Danzō struggles to bring himself to volunteer and calls himself weak as Hiruzen volunteers himself for the role. After Hiruzen is appointed as Third Hokage, Danzō swears to himself that he'll one day attain the title as well and decides to take up the village's more clandestine operations, something that Hiruzen knew about and allowed Danzō to do.

He creates an ANBU branch named ROOT, with the organisation under Danzō's direct command and hand-picked young shinobi with noticeable potential.

During the Third Shinobi World War, Danzō agrees to provide aid to Hanzō of Amegakure in order to receive help in claiming the title of Hokage, manipulating Hanzō into joining forces with him against the Akatsuki by bringing him corpses of Ame shinobi and claiming they were killed by Akatsuki, while in truth they were ROOT members disguised.

During the Kyuubi's attack on Konoha, Danzō insists that the Uchiha clan is not allowed to join in the defence of the village, fearing that someone like Madara Uchiha would take advantage of the situation and use the Nine-Tails against Konoha, and convinces Hiruzen to have the Uchiha exclusively protect the citizens. Then, after the attack is stopped, he's one of the elders to suspect the Uchiha clan was behind the attack and begins a spying operation on them, relocating the Uchiha to the outskirts of the village. He later approaches a grieving young Kakashi and convinces him to join Danzō's ROOT division and spy on Hiruzen for him.

Over the years, Danzō recruits many new members of ROOT, including clan kids like Aburame Torune of the Aburame clan, Yamanaka Fū of the Yamana clan and Uchiha Itachi of the Uchiha clan.

At some point Danzō, fearing that his stolen Sharingan will go blind with overuse, sends Kinoe on a mission to steal Kakashi's Sharingan as a replacement, but the boy returns after deciding to abandon his mission, much to Danzō's fury. Before Danzō can take action against Kinoe, Kakashi arrives to save him and retreat together.

When word reaches him about a coup d'état planned by the Uchiha clan, Danzō takes advantage of Itachi's pacifist tendencies to convince him into providing him and the other elders information of the clan's actions. When later on Shisui Uchiha presents his plan of ceasing the Uchiha's coup by using Kotoamatsukami on his own clansmen to the Council, Hiruzen agrees. Danzō, however, is determined to protect the village in his own way and steals the Shisui's right eye, pushing him into suicide.

Danzō then secretly meets with Itachi and manipulates him into choosing to slaughter his own clan by presenting him with the option of either killing them and sparing his younger brother or letting them go through with the coup and having them all killed by the village as a result.

Hiruzen, not believing Danzō's story about Itachi having done the massacre out of his own will, voices his disgust at Danzō's actions before removing him from the Council and ordering for his ROOT division to be disbanded. However, despite that order, Danzō continues to keep ROOT secretly active over the years.

Personality:

When he was younger, Danzō was a hot-headed and eager ninja with a strong desire to prove himself. He often displayed jealousy towards Hiruzen, believing he was always one step ahead of him and feeling inferior to him.

As an adult, Danzō is a calm, cold and collected individual who does not allow his emotions to surface. Due to being raised in times of war, Danzō's beliefs differ from those of the Hokage as he felt that the interests of the village should be placed above all else, even ethics and morals.

According to his former teammate Utatane Koharu, Danzō is very ambitious and all he ever did was for the sake of the village.

Danzō prefers to directly eliminate threats through assassination and execution rather than diplomacy and negotiation. However, he secretly worked closely with the international criminal Orochimaru in illegal experiments in order to increase his physical capabilities.

Danzō also possesses a fanatical and arbitrary adherence to the ideals of a shinobi, believing they must sacrifice absolutely everything for the village, all the while hypocritically fearing his own death and hiding this fear behind the belief that his survival was necessary for the sake of the shinobi world itself.

Despite his reputation as a militarist, Danzō wishes for peace in the ninja world, one he wants to achieve by uniting all shinobi forces under his control. Danzō's pursuit of peace follows the idea that the end justifies the means and, as such, he has no remorse taking any immoral actions as long as he believes that it would benefit Konoha.

Danzō also believes Konoha is strongest and most stable when the village has a target to focus its anger and hatred on. To this end, he was key in stigmatizing the Uchiha clan and was the one to secretly leak out the knowledge that Naruto Uzumaki was the container of the Nine-Tailed Fox, ensuring the villagers would loathe him as a result.

Treacherous by nature, Danzō will not hesitate into eliminate his allies if they ever prove themselves too capable for his comfort. However, despite his his self-righteous and amoral methods, Danzō does have a sense of nobility and dignity, reprimanding Sasuke for his hatred and violence against Konoha, saying that it had wasted both the sacrifice of the Uchiha clan and Itachi's own personal sacrifices.

Willing to do anything to further his physical and political powers, Danzō allows Orochimaru to experiment on him with Hashirama's cells in order to gain the power to control a tailed beast and extend his use of Izanagi.

In his later years, Danzō has become somewhat delusional and extremely arrogant, believing himself to be unbeatable and that only he would be able to change the entire Shinobi World on his own.

Abilities:

As the leader of the Root and the Sixth Hokage Candidate, Danzō is an exceptionally powerful shinobi and his skills are held in high regard by the elders Homura and Koharu as they considere him one of Konoha's strongest ninja.

Danzō is adept in both using and dispelling high-level genjutsu. He also has some skill in taijutsu and a decent amount of physical strength despite his old age. Danzō is also quite fast and agile. Additionally, Danzō is also skilled in the use of kenjutsu.

Danzō is well-versed in the use of fūinjutsu and cursed seals. In fact, he placed binding seals on the tongues of every ROOT member to prevent his secrets from being exposed. He can also implement binding seals in battle, which is shown when he places a seal on Sasuke, temporarily paralysing him. Lastly, upon his death, Danzō reveals his most powerful sealing technique, the Reverse Four Symbols Sealing, a technique that causes four seal symbols on Danzō's skin to exit from his body and form a large sphere around him, forcing everything inside it to be drawn in and imprisoned within his corpse.

Danzō has access to a very unique summoning, a giant tapir-like creature known as a Baku, described as the "Nightmare-Eater". A creature of massive size, it has the ability to suck in objects and targets within the area in front of it. The Baku's suction can also be used to increase the power of Danzō's wind techniques, despite the suction leaving the creature vulnerable to fire techniques.

Danzō can utilise multiple nature transformations which include Wind, Earth, Water and Fire Release, as well as both Yin and Yang Release. He's particularly proficient in Wind Release, using powerful vacuum-based attacks that can either slash like blades or pierce like bullets. If needed, he can use enhanced or localised variations, some of which are strong enough to destroy an extremely durable wooden dome or damage a humanoid Susanoo's defences. He can also use his wind chakra to manoeuvre himself in mid-air, as well as infuse wind into his weapons to increase their offensive power.

Possessing Hashirama's cells in his right arm, Danzō has the ability to use Wood Release, albeit with a significant toll on his chakra. This, combined with the fact that his overall skill with the technique is quite rudimentary, forces him to only use it when necessary.

Danzō's right arm originally belonged to Uchiha Shin and was implanted with ten Sharingan and lastly enhanced with Hashirama Senju's DNA. He normally keeps the arm hidden under bandages and a gauntlet-like seal, presumably to conserve chakra and keep the eyes and DNA in check.

Due to integration of Hashirama's cells, Danzō has gained the ability to heal nearly any wound without the use of hand seals. According to Tobi, Danzō's possession of both Uchiha and Senju DNA most likely meant that he was after Naruto, since he possessed the potential capability to control Kurama.

Danzō's right eye was that of Uchiha Shisui's Sharingan and was very skilled at using it, able to detect multiple assassins hidden among his surroundings and subdue individuals with genjutsu. Danzō can activate Izanagi, a technique forbidden even amongst the Uchiha clan. However, even with Danzō's physical energy augmented by Hashirama's cells, it takes a substantial amount of chakra to sustain the technique.

Having his eye constantly hidden, Danzō has never been seen activating Shisui's Mangekyō Sharingan. Despite this, he has made use of Kotoamatsukami an unknown amount of times. Augmented by Hashirama's cells, Danzō reveals that he can use the technique once every several hours, as opposed to once every decade.

Upon his death, Danzō destroys the eye in fear that it could one day be used against Konoha.
