Wandering Spirit | Gondolin
Featuring: Halre, Maeglin @twilightchild & mentions of Turgon @malkuvoitenoldoran
“Is Uncle Turgon aware of your wanderings?”
The question came after a few silent minutes of watching the blacksmith finish preparing for one of his trips out into the Echoriad mountain range. A slight stiffening of his back was the only visible sign of surprise that he gave at the voice. He considered his answer for a long moment as he looped the strap of his pack over one broad shoulder. “I don’t know. If he is then he’s never mentioned it or asked me to stop.”
“Would you actually stop going outside though, if he was to tell you to?”
“What’s with the sudden questions?”
“Just interested since you seem to vanish every few months for two weeks.”
Halrë snorted and turned towards Maeglin, sliding his twin dual handed almost 7ft swords into their sheaths at the same time. “To answer your question, yes I would stop. Your uncle is one of the very few elves who I will listen to. Lord Glorfindel is the other as most are too intimidated by me.” He tilted his head, eyeing the other elf. “Any other questions or can I go now? There’s a storm coming in and I’d prefer not to be caught out in it.”
“Ah sorry.”
The tall silver eyed swordsman watched him disappear into the streets with a unusually, for him, blank expression. Before he turned and headed out of Gondolin, nodding to the guards. But as long strides took Halrë away from his home, he wondered what would happen on his return. For something inside told him that if the King didn’t know about his trips, Turgon would soon find out via his nephew.

@antleredthrone :
Halrë snorted with quiet amusement, relaxing a bit at his words. “Who? You? I don’t believe that.” He teased softly, before dropping to sit on the ground and resting his arms on his knees. Them he caught his companion? friend? ‘s curious look and dropped his own silver gaze to his hands. “I do care though, Thran. Especially when half of the rumours involve me and how long it’ll be until you get tired of having me around.” He murmured softly, playing with a loose thread on his tunic.
“I don’t want to be the reason your reputation is ruined.” | Halrë

“I find it bold to assume that I haven’t already ruined it,” Thranduil chuckled, looking over at him with curious eyes. “I have lived long enough now to know what they say about me, but I no longer have it in me to care.”

⭐ - from TwilightChild
A twitch. Then a sigh. Before one molten silver eye cracked open to see who on Arda was playing with his hair. It was a unusually warm afternoon in Gondolin and Turgon, the King himself, had actually forced him to have a couple of days off. So Halrë had decided to doze in one of the rarely used courtyards, not expecting to be disturbed. "Who?" was his half asleep question.

Halrë Vatari
Halrë only ever knew Gondolin as he was too young to remember much about his actual home, despite having been born in Aman. His family came from a line of Blacksmiths/Weapon-crafters but they were secretive and often known as mysterious, for they tended to work alone. After losing all of his family through the years, he became more isolated out of his work, only really interacting with Turgon and Glorfindel.
A wanderer by nature, he returned from his travels at the request of his King to help primarily with the weapons for the Last Alliance. Not many actually knew what his true name was, for he went only by Ihain. Although he preferred working in the forges, Halrë was a dual sword user and his height meant that he often saw attackers long before they actually saw him.
"Sometimes being yourself is more difficult than expected, especially with no memories."
After Sauron's defeat, no one saw him again and it was often thought that he had died in battle like so many others. That was proven wrong in T.A. 830 when he was found near the Grey Havens with amnesia and nothing but the tools of a blacksmith on him. It was also documented by the healers that when asked what he remembered, Halrë could only shrug and say that all he recalled was fighting, gate of hell (Black Gate), an alliance of Men and Elves, before pain and just nothing afterwards. Although Cirdan recognised him, his name was lost to time and his own lack of memories. He couldn’t exactly go around being called Ihain though, so in recognition of many thinking that he was just a ghost at first, the Grey Haven elves called him Ferne.

‘Half feral blacksmith’
A nickname given to Halrë after he completed his blacksmith apprenticeship in Gondolin. Because of his habit of going outside of the city and exploring, disappearing for a week at a time. It was meant to be unfriendly and even called cruel by some of the older elves, yet none of them stepped in to stop it either. He never complained or protested about the treatment he received from others of his kin, remaining isolated like he had as a elfling. Only his sister’s family and the King knew of his real name. Otherwise he was known as the half feral blacksmith’, mountain or lhain to most.

Insight into Halrë (later Ferne)
As a child, Halrë spent much of his time in his father’s forge, learning the ways of a Blacksmith and Weapons-crafter. When not in the forge or being taught various subjects by his mother, he could be found wandering outside of Gondolin. Growing up, it quickly became apparent to his parents and the city guards that the young elf had been isolated by his height.
Yet even at sword training, Halrë stood out. Partly because he was much taller than the other elves there but mostly due to the length of the swords he carried. Reaching nearly 7 feet from handle to tip, they had been designed to be used by one elf only.
Halrë Vatari.
For not many others, including his father, had either the strength or the height required to handle such massive blades or use them effectively. Much to his amusement. Hence his blacksmith nickname and thus, the name that was used by all but his parents and the King, was Mountain.

Memories
An integral part of what makes a person. Allowing you to recall your past, the people involved, the places you visited. All helping to shape who you are. And yet... I have only the faintest of glimpses into my past.
Fighting, the Black Gate, an alliance of Men and Elves then NOTHING. Only many long years later, would I start to recall faces I once knew but now lack the ability to put names to. ~ Ferne Olorel

“ What I wouldn’t give to go back to the time where I had no concerns. ” (Elladan for your choice)
@twinstarsofimladris:
"If I could remember that far back, I might say I agree, Elladan." Amusement could be heard in a deep, time roughened voice but for a few minutes, it's owner couldn't be seen. Not until Ferne came out of his room, a wry smile on his features and carrying a shirt. He had been cleaning up after working in the forge overnight when the younger elf came in. "Is there anything I can do for you?"
