Prince Ereson Luna is the heir apparent of the kingdom of Shadd and is named after one of their gods. For as long as he can remember, he's had the ability to see the auras of those around him. Around himself is a tar-black mass that writhes like worms. Around Prince Landon of Lyth is a white-gold aura that shines brighter than any other. Ereson's aura corrupts anything it touches, and he cannot control it. Because of this, though he cares deeply for Landon, he avoids him. This is quite the struggle considering that, as fate would have it, Landon is both his soulmate and his mortal enemy. You see, Ereson is what is known as the Nocturne, the prophesied child of the aforementioned god Erese, who is destined to drag the world into his father’s divine realm of the Endless Dream, diametrically opposed to Landon's own destiny as the Lucerene, a vessel of the god of light, who is meant to lead the war-torn world of Pandora into an era of peace and prosperity.

Cedric Maximilian is the elder of the two Maximilian siblings, being 13 years old. He and his little half-sister Lucy had been out trick-or-treating when they managed to slip through the Veil separating Earth from Samhain, the land of monsters. The only one willing to help them was an antiques shop-owning demon named Monarch, who informs them that the Veil has shut behind them and offers to be a guide and guardian in their search for some other way out. Cedric is a nervous wreck to start, but as time goes on and the trio meets all flavors of monster throughout Samhain, he overcomes his fear and develops a strong compassion for those around him. When he sacrifices himself to protect his newfound friend group, the truth about how the Maximilians slipped through the Veil is revealed: Cedric is not entirely human (he's half-phoenix, to be precise) and this monstrous heritage makes the Veil especially thin for him. Lucille was only able to come through because they were holding hands when he fell.

Leah Edmonds was human once upon a time, but a get-together with friends gone horribly wrong led to her and her brother Jackson becoming the sole survivors of a vampire clan's feeding frenzy. The clan leader who turned them, Arturo, claims that the two "owe" him for sparing their lives, and with the threat of that second chance at life being taken away looming over her head, Leah works as a traveling nurse to pay off her supposed debt. When she's done, and she very nearly is, she plans on making sure Arturo never does this to anyone ever again.
