@tolkienocweek Day 2: Canon-OC Relationships

Annael together with his beloved, Rhíwalph

Rhíwalph originated as a doodle on my phone. Her name is an attempt at Sindarin where I mashed together "rhîw" (winter) and "alph" (swan) to reflect her origins in Mithrim. Other Mithrim-ish details would be her thick winter coat and swan-head hairstick.

My imagination of her relationships with Annael, Tuor, etc. and her story within the events of the Silmarillion are still very vague. I honestly don't have anything set in stone about her, other than her being from Mithrim, but I do still like to doodle her. So here I am!

1. Why do you write fanfiction?

It's fun! Fanfiction lets me explore the characters and worlds that I love in more depth than simply reading about them does. And especially for a book like The Silmarillion, where so much of what we're given in the text is more of a light sketch than a fully-realized portrait, fanfiction is an entertaining way to experiment with different character interpretations.

11. Gen fic or shippy stuff?

I write both, though I think I do write gen more often than shippy stuff. But I have a whole series about Caranthir and his wife, and multiple Fingon/Fingon's Wife and Fingon/Maedhros stories. Sometimes they're the same story, because I hate happiness.

19. Do you have any OCs? Tell us about them!

I have so many OCs, it's not even funny. The ones I've spent the most time on are:

Parmacundë, who was my first Silmarillion OC. She's rather shy and introverted, a grade-A dweeb, and an archivist who handles government records at Tirion's royal archive. She and Caranthir meet as young apprentices (her at the archive, him at an accounting firm) and become friends and eventual spouses.

Ianneth, who has her own series and also features heavily in my Woman King AU (as she should, considering she's Gil-galad's mother). She's the daughter of Annael of Mithrim and the wife of Fingon. I love Fingon/Maedhros, but I also want Fingon to be Gil-galad's father. I'm not by an stretch of the imagination the first person to try to reconcile these things, but Ianneth was in many ways born of my frustration with the fact that, in so many stories where the M/M ship involves a het-partnered party, the feelings of the woman are completely discounted. She's ignored, or vilified, or even written out of the story altogether. I wanted to put the focus on the wife and give her a voice.

Galwen, a Nandorin/Avarin follower of the Sons of Feanor, who was saved by Amras as an adolescent from an orc attack that left her mute. I created her to be a minor antagonist in my Kidnap Fam multichap, and she proceeded to take on a life of her own and start demanding her own stories. She's a pain in my ass but I love her.

Tókhesh/Tavoreth, who is Ulfang's grandaughter and Bor's niece. She's the star of my First Age Easterlings WIP, which is the WIP that has given me the most agita in my life. She's young, but highly adept with languages, and she becomes the chief translator between Caranthir and Ulfang's people. I can't go into too much detail about her without spoiling the chapters I haven't written yet, so you'll just have to keep reading to find out more. :)

For the writing meme, what happens in the future of the “pray for elrond y’all” fics?

pray for elrond y'all aka the saga of Helcerían and Seregeithon has a couple of tentative sequels which may or may not get written, especially as they have linked up in my head with the other OC slowburn multi-chapter romance epic, Release from Bondage's Faron and Faelindis.

But for a quick rundown: Helce and Sereg return to Alqualondë to touch base with their families. Helce conceived on that boatride over, so she's getting some very awkward and stern side-eye from people like her aunt and the queen. Seregeithon goes to his adopted father, Albethor, for an equally awkward family reunion. On the list of reunions that might happen here are Annael and his husband, Tuor, and Elwing. They don't stay in Valinor, however, but return to Gil-galad's court in Lindon.

First son is born; Helcerían soon pregnant with first daughter. (The placeholder names because of the Final Fantasy deep root inspiration are Ricard and Rydia, btw). During this period is when Gil-galad sends the letter inviting Faron to visit him at Lindon. Faron and Faelindis (along with Cuddles the Therapy Dog aka Former Warg) arrive and have some reunions and conversations about homecomings and growing away from family shadows healthily with Gil. Also Faelindis gets mad jealous at the very visibly pregnant Helcerían and Hiswalagawen the Giant Swan Maia notices Cuddles and has that awkward "we knew each other from High School, heard you fucked up your life bitch but I see you're doing better/wow your sister is so much more successful than you that's got to sting" catty conversation solely through averted eye contact.

During the war against Sauron Seregeithon fights alongside Elrond and is one of the key military commanders. Helcerían and kids also live in Imladris. When Elrond marries Celebrían, Sereg and Helce stand in for Elrond's parents. Their younger kids are the playmates for Elrohir and Elladan.

Elrond isn't surprised. Not thrilled, but not surprised.

...Seregeithon is probably one of Celebrían's guards that gets killed when she is captured by orcs. Or 'Ricard'. Whichever one dies, the other will join the revenge spree alongside the twins. Most of the family goes with Celebrían to Valinor. Whoever doesn't will go with Elrond

“It’s hard for us to tell, with mortals,” Annael admitted, “but you’re of an age now that you’re growing a beard, so that’s a sign of your maturity.”

Tuor scratched at the stubble on his chin a bit self-consciously. He was only thirteen; he didn’t think that made him an adult, but...well, Annael was right. He’d never known any humans, and the Swan-folk didn’t know very many aside from him, and certainly not very well. He was pretty sure he still had some growing up to do, but...he did feel pretty mature. And if Annael said so, and the other leaders agreed, it must be true. He glanced to the other elves, and saw them smiling at him, nodding their heads.

“So, we have decided it is time to give you the first of your coming-of-age gifts,” Annael pronounced, and unfolded the white cloth in his lap.

Tuor gasped. “A swan-cloak?” he said reverently, reaching out to stroke the feathers softly. “But I’m...”

“Our family,” Annael said firmly, draping the sacred cloak over his shoulders. “You have been raised among us, and are a part of us. You are of the Folk of the Swan as much as any other of our children, and deserve to take part in our traditions.”

“But Nimphiel didn’t get her cloak until she was seventy-five,” Tuor whispered, awed to 

“I’ll live a lot longer than you, little Tuor,” Nimphiel said, smiling. “And it took me a lot longer to grow up.”

“I don’t think I’m done growing,” Tuor said, spinning around so his cape floated dramatically. A chuckle ran through the assembled elves, and Tuor grinned.

“Probably not,” Annael agreed. “Which is why this is only the first of your gifts.”

Nimphiel sighed dramatically. “At this rate you’ll be counted as a full adult before I am,” she complained. “Don’t go getting married before me, though!”

2020 Art Highlights :)

Rules: It’s time to love yourselves! Choose your favorite works you created in the past year (fics, art, edits, etc.) and link them below to reflect on the amazing things you brought into the world in 2020. Tag as many writers/artists/etc. as you want (fan or original) so we can spread the love and link each other to awesome works!

Oh goodness, I have a lot of favourites! I’ll start with my four large paintings; these were done to practice full-body compositions and backgrounds.

A Party in Tirion. My first large painting! I especially love the lighting and atmosphere of that piece.

The Baths of Menegroth. I painted this one as a way to practice female anatomy and atmospheric backgrounds, while also taking the opportunity to develop my headcanons for Lúthien.

The Argument. There’s not a lot of art on this scene, so I thought I’d try my hand at it. I learned that I needed to practice more male anatomy, and also that Maedros was pretty much the sole point of interest of this piece.

The Elven Bathhouse. This one is from my stories, not Tolkien XD I learned quite a bit about male anatomy while painting this piece, and I’m quite happy with the result though I know there’s lots I can improve on.

Next are the solitary pieces! I’ll put this under a “keep reading” since it’s a bit long, sorry ^^;;

Fire and Smoke. I think this is my favourite of the kidnap fam paintings I’ve done so far. I was able to closely match my initial vision, and I also tried an experimental style for the backgrounds, which turned out nicely.

Findekáno and Arakáno. You ever have that painting that you keep coming back to, maybe because it feels very ... cozy? Or fuzzy? Or the composition is just very ... cuddly? I don’t know how to explain it ^^;; I think it’s just the way Fingon cradles Argon, and how Argon holds Fingon’s shoulder. I’m not sure how I brought this effect about, or if anybody else feels the same as me, but it’s like I can feel the cloth of Fingon’s sleeve and the arch of his shoulder as though I’m leaning my head against him. Is it just me? Maybe I need a break from the House of Fingolfin lmaoo

Tell Me About Your Family. Beren and Lúthien are my favourite couple, but I hardly make any content of them. This was really fun to draw in that I was able to create a comfortable, warm atmosphere between them ... or at least I hope I was able to ^^;; 

Autumn Tree. Two of my favourite OCs, Aurelydan and Talevar, in the style of my Fire and Smoke paintings. Honestly, I hadn’t drawn them for a while at that time, so it was nice to spend some time with them.

Nolofinwëan Wrath. I think this is my favourite Fingon piece to date. At first I was going to draw him with a blank expression, as though to suggest that he’s dissociating. But then I thought to myself, no, let’s make him angry.

Annael and Rían. I love how Annael turned out here. I dunno what it is, but I just have a thing for immortal beings (usually elves loll) holding mortals in their hearts, if you know what I mean. And I still can’t get over how small and round and cute Tuor is XDD I just imagine Annael holding him so tenderly against his chest, and Tuor falls asleep surrounded by the body heat, and dreams of shiny droplets splashing against the cave walls from little waterfalls ... 

Fëanturi Siblings. I need more content of Námo and Irmo with Nienna. Please, more platonic family interactions, I need them.

Illumination. My favourite rendered piece of Aurelydan and Talevar, and the physical form of Aurelydan’s power -- the Firebird. Not only did I get to practice drawing wing anatomy (which took me a dang while to get right loll) I got to have fun with all the lighting, too!

Sisters at Odds. I haven’t drawn these two for ages and ages, so I was all too happy to spend some time with them.

You're literally the first person I've encountered in this fandom who hates Fingon, mad respect lmao. It felt like he was just sorta there, and I sometimes forget he exists during my read-through. I also started out neutral because I would just forget about him but seeing the majority fandom, even the most Noldor-critical, praise him as some golden child who did no wrong just gradually made me dislike him. The rescue gets sung praises over and over again meanwhile I just /do not care/ about those two. Don't even get me started about how the Feanorian apologists like to pit him up against Turgon for being ~unjustly bitter and petty~ for holding a grudge.

EXACTLY my trajectory, with some added "Can we STOP Victim-Blaming the Teleri and focusing the fannish portrayals overwhelmingly on one of the main perpetrators who we actually do NOT get explicit regret over said war crimes". Fingon was completely forgettable to me for almost all my reads and re-reads of the Silm, except of a detached acknowledgement that here's exactly what the main slash ship of this book will be and what stock personality and character traits and plotlines they will give. And said ship is basic - I mean not interesting to me. ;) And it is the juggernaut that warps the fandom and overshadows all other canon and fanon pairings and cannot pretend otherwise though some do.

There's more Fingon haters out there, or at least very Fingon-neutral, especially if you look into Túrin fans. But yes, even if my disdain for Fingon is subtext in the fics that I write, I'm proud and loud on my blog in part just to prove the existence of someone who finds him only interesting as a counterbalance to more sympathetic mostly female textual ghosts around him.

Turgon is the extrovert to Fingon's introvert, btw. Turgon willingly traps himself with a city of people for centuries. And successfully and independently ruled a kingdom. And their sister chose him - and even when she said she was going to visit Fingon, didn't.
