Ok. So it turns out that I couldn't quite get this one to be out and out whump. It's more memories of whump and them being put to bed because, darnit, Alyaa deserves it! @pepperonyscience I hope it's ok that I wrote this!

The petals of the delicate flowers, tied safely in their bouquet, trembled with the slight shiver of Alyaa's hand. The tiniest hint of nerves that she couldn't quite squash down. She thought back to the florists advice as the flowers had been handed over to her.

Don't grip on to them too hard and hold them low enough to let everyone see your dress. And this was a dress that she was happy to be seen in. She had chosen it. She was comfortable in it. Thoughts of marriage in her past had always led her to assume that Ethan would use it as a means to keep keep her forever.

A deep and shaky breath let the trembling subside a little. She transferred the bouquet to one hand and reached out to lace her fingers with Tony's, the nerves unable to stop her smiling. He lifted her hand and kissed the back of it.

"Shall we get you and this gorgeous megawatt smile to your about-to-be-husband?"

"You just try and keep me away."

Question for Tony: What did you think the first time you saw Alyaa?

*he pauses to think about it for a moment*

"I thought finally Rory's got a friend close to where he lives. And then I thought that she seemed very sad. Not in any obvious way. She smiled. She was kind and polite. But that girl was sad. No hiding it from me and Brenda!

Brenda worried about her constantly from there on in.

But I tell you what. I only had to spend a few minutes in her company to know that she had a lot of happy waiting to get out. She just didn't realise at the time."

Rory Gets Belt Looped

No tws here unless you count the gratuitous use of the word testicles! This is a present for @pepperonyscience who asked to see how Rory's parents Tony and Brenda reacted to the time that Rory caught himself on the school railing by his belt loop. He also now has a tiny scar from this incident but he would say his parents talking about his testicles on speakerphone was waaaay more damaging!

“Phone!!!!”  Brenda yelled, her hands covered in pastry dough.

“On it like a car bonnet, love of my life!” Tony called back.  Brenda smiled and shook her head.

“You’re so hip darling,” she shouted back, plunging her hands back into the dough.  She looked up as Tony wandered back into the kitchen and sat down at the dining table, phone pressed to his ear and a look of absoloute glee on his face. 

“I’m sorry, could you just go over that with me one more time?”  Tony asked, then took the phone away from his face and pressed the speaker button, before he laid it on the table, leaning back and crossing his hands behind his head.

“I SAID I’m stuck on the school railings!” Rory’s voice floated into the room.  Brenda frowned, the corner of her mouth just upticking into a smile. 

“Details, son, details,” Tony said, barely able to contain his amusement.

“DAD!  I’m...shut up!...”  Rory’s voice faded a little as he yelled at the laughter that could be heard in the background of the phone call.  “I’m...” his voice dropped a few notches quieter, as though that could somehow stave off the embarrasement.  “...belt looped.”

“Belt looped?”  Brenda asked, her smile getting bigger.  She tried to keep her laughter in and she looked at Tony, hands flailing and mouthing sorry as a giggle bubbled up and out.

“Am I on speaker!?  Dad!  Am I on speaker!?” 

“Of course you are my dangling delight,”  Tony said, the laughter in the background getting louder and louder.  “Am I?”

“SHUT UP!  Yes!!!  It was, look I’m kind of upside down here and it was just about the only button I could press so yes you are and this isn’t helping my street cred!”  Rory half yelled, sounding more and more desperate.

“What street cred darling?”  Brenda asked, wiping her hands on the edge of the bowl to get the worst of the dough off, before taking the rest of it off on her apron.  In the background of the phone call, someone started up a chant of street cred over and over again.

“I hate you all!”  Rory shrieked.  “Dad I’m going to pass out and die and then you’ll all be sorry!”

“You’re so dramatic Rory,” Tony said. 

“Have your pants ripped yet?”  Brenda asked.

“Which loop are you hanging from?”  Tony asked.

“How are these the pertinent questions!?”  Rory shouted back at them.

“That’s a terribly big word for someone who’s dangling upside down.  All that blood rushing to your head is making you ever so clever.”  Tony said laughing.

“Ever so clever!” Brenda said with glee.  “You’re a poet and you didn’t know it!”

“How is this conversation even happening!?”  Rory screeched down the line.

“Because you belt looped yourself sweetheart,” Brenda said, chuckling and sitting down next to Tony.  “Which loop was it again?  I don’t want you to damage your testicles.”  The laughter in the background pitched up to a new level, with someone screaming that they were going to wet themselves, and another voice hollering out that they were going to die from laughing.

“My what!?”  Rory yelled.  Brenda clapped a hand over her mouth to stifle the laugh that was threatening to fly out of it.

“Testicles, son,”  Tony said.  “You only get the one set, can’t grow new ones.  Best to look after them.”  He looked over at Brenda who had just slid off the seat and on to the floor, holding her stomach and red in the face, tears streaming down her cheeks. 

“Go and rescue him!”  she panted out.  “I don’t think his friend are the only ones about to die from laughing!”

“Ok ok,”  Tony said, stretching and standing up.  “Rory my boy?  I’m on my way.  You just, uh, you know, hang in there,”  the laughter reached a screeching picth in the background of the call.  “If your testicles start to hurt, call me on my mobile and I’ll drive a bit faster.” 

Tony pressed the call end button and bent down to kiss Brenda who waved him away wordlessly, all ability to talk having been wiped out by her uncontrollable laughter.  Laughing to himself, he picked up his keys from the side.

“I’ll be back shortly, dangling delight in tow.  Be sure to ask him about his testicles the minute we step through the door.”  He left the house with a shriek of laughter ringing in his ears.

Tony, what do you love best about Rory and Brenda?

What do I love most about Rory? That he got all my devilishly handsome good looks of course! Oh, I'm pulling your leg. I love everything about that boy but if I'm picking? Then it's how kind he is. He's got a heart big as a house. He's just been waiting for the right people to come along and fill it. Looks to me like he's heading the right way.

And Brenda? Everything. There's nothing about her that I'd change. Nothing I tell you! You know what's really lovely though? She's fairly convinced that a cold glass of lemonade will improve any situation. And who am I to argue!

Brenda and Alyaa: Meta Analysis

Presenting a meta analysis of Brenda Linden and her wonderful relationship with Alyaa Ashiq.

So, everyone knows Brenda; Rory's mum and staunch believer that lemonade in posh glass bottles might not solve everything but it certainly helps things along a little when you're feeling down. What people don't know much about is her relationship with Alyaa.

Alyaa doesn't open up quickly or easily since her time spent being Ethan's possession. The only person that she connects with instantly is Callum. She wants to be near to him right from the first moment that she saw Rory bring him home after he rescued him from Hayden. She has met Tony and Brenda but due to her quiet nature and subdued personality, she never gets much further along than niceties and relief that they seem like they'll be kind to Callum.

The Bad Thing:

Thanks to The Bad Thing, Rory breaks down and wants nothing more than to be with his dad. As a result, Rory, Callum and Alyaa all end up staying with Tony and Brenda for a while. And THIS is where Alyaa truly finds a home and a family. They don't live in Rory's childhood home because they moved away once he was settled and looked like he wouldn't injure himself too much if left alone! But they took their old comfortable couch with them. And it's down the side of this couch that Brenda finds Alyaa trying to hide and keep out of everyone's way.

"Rory used to hide down the side of this couch," Brenda said, as she eased herself down on to the cushions. She didn't look directly at Alyaa. She spoke the words out into the room. "I'm quite used to spotting a shock of black hair that thinks it's well hidden."

It's partly this, and partly the fact that Brenda has had recent surgery on her knee that gets Alyaa out of her hiding space. Brenda eventually gets back up and crouched next to Alyaa. Alyaa believes that she is entirely to blame for what happened to them all and she can't bear to add more to that by letting Brenda be uncomfortable on her account.

"It's ok if it's there forever. Because it will be. It's a part of you and your life."

And so they sit and they talk.

"I always wanted a daughter. A sister for Rory. Turns out all I had to do was wait for him to fall out of a car with one behind him."

Alyaa is beyond scared that she's not wanted. That Brenda and Tony will blame her for what happened to Rory. That she'll be kicked out and frankly she believes that she deserves that to happen. But Brenda has seen right through it. She is so upset for what happened to Rory. She needs to be with her son and know that he'll be ok. That the dull daytime stare and the screaming in the night will stop. But she knows without a shadow of a doubt that Alyaa is not to blame for what happened.

Brenda knows that Alyaa needs Rory and Callum as much as they need her but she's astute. She can see that Alyaa is insisting on putting herself on the outside in some way or another.

The Sphere:

Rory and Callum are soulmates. But Alyaa doesn't see herself in there too. Brenda describes them as a sphere. If Alyaa sees herself as an outside part of their lives, then she's clinging to their sphere. And then it's not round anymore. They can't roll along nicely and she's going to get hurt.

If Alyaa sees herself as taking something away from their relationship by being there, then there's a chunk missing from the sphere. It still can't roll along. She's missing from it and it's gone off kilter.

Rory and Callum see Alyaa as entirely a part of their sphere and it doesn't occur to them to think of her as anything else. She just needs to catch up to the idea, and Brenda is there to help every step of the way.

New Parents, New Daughter:

Alyaa craves a parental figure in her life. She adores Callum. She gets around to adoring Rory too. But she needs a parental influence. It's having the support of a full family that finally fills all of the gaps.

Callum tells her to think of the board that she works with as plankton. They're awful to her and they use her grief and her money for their own good, just the same as Ethan did too. But without the backing of Brenda, would it ever have happened? Without the unquestioned support that Brenda gives her, would she ever feel like she had it in her to follow through on Callum's plankton suggestion?

Alyaa gains different types of strength from Callum and Rory. And through Brenda, she gains the parental motherly strength that will help heal her while the sphere keeps her safe.

Can I get some facts about a young Brenda and Tony?

Of course you can!

Brenda and Tony went all through school together and she had her eye on him from the get-go. When she was six years old she proudly announced that she was going to "wear a marrying dress and marry him!"

Brenda started a rumour about herself when she was eighteen that she was moving abroad to study. Tony finally got up the courage to ask her out.

Tony couldn't afford an engagement ring initially so he drew a ring on a sticking plaster and wrapped it around Brenda's ring finger while she was sleeping.

It had all finally gone quiet. And actually, Alyaa was glad about it. Giving birth, as it turned out, was a long and tiring process. Not to mention painful.

She loved her family. Loved them. They meant the world and more to her. But she was grateful to sink into the quiet of her hospital room, the silence only broken now and then by the soft snuffling of her newborn baby against her chest.

David had gone with them to see them out. Rory and Brenda and Tony. Callum was due on his shift in theatre and so, had made his own way into the bowels of the hospital. A second home to him.

The gentle click of the door took her attention. She expected a nurse. A midwife. A doctor. David.

She didn't expect Tony, all on his own and a little out of breath. She didn't expect him to hurry on over to her beside. She didn't expect the kiss on her head and the whispered words.

"We love you so much". And then he was gone again.

But she knew her smile would last long after he left.
