Angst alert: Feargus, the Chosen One's nephew, is Kaga's son in my canon. The two don't meet until Feargus is 6 or 7 ish, after Kaga gets un-exiled for helping out with the whole Enclave situation

in my world the cut character Kaga is my Chosen One's younger brother, and he was exiled several months before Feargus was born (on account of the whole. murdering his opponent in the temple of trials business).

I’ve never seen anyone discussing this so I’m bringing it up... Since the Chosen One in Fallout 2 has a nephew named Feargus, it stands to reason that they must have a sibling, right? Yet, as far as I know this sibling is never mentioned otherwise. You’d think the Elder would want to send more than one Chosen out into the wastes to find the GECK since they’re both grandchildren of the Vault Dweller. This has interesting implications. Either:

1. There IS a sibling who’s around somewhere, but according to Arroyo’s religious beliefs there can only be one Chosen, and you just so happened to be the one who passed the Trials. Or...

2. The Chosen’s sibling died before the start of the game, after they had Feargus, maybe they tried the Temple of Trials before you and died in there. If so, then that would show how seriously the Elder takes the Trials that she’s willing to put her children’s lives in danger since she’s their mother. But the sibling could have died from anything, really.

If there’s some obscure piece of lore that might explain this, let me know.

I was working on a different WIP today so I'll be using my heroine from that piece. It's been a while since I talked about Of Spirits' Kindling here, so here's a quick synopsis before I dive into these questions with Yaeha.

Disillusioned photographer Kirinosaki Yaeha stands mired in her mind's darkest places. Desperate for a way out, she heads to her grandmother's hometown of Kagas Inlet, a small bay town home to forgotten relics and folklore. The quiet, foggy burg threatens to demoralize Yaeha further, until her camera captures a glimpse of the world beyond…

Were you named after anyone?

"Not that I know of. My grandmother is--was--'Mari,' my mother is 'Yomi' and my father is 'Taka,' so who knows where any of them got 'Yaeha' from. Even I think it's a weird name."

Do you have any kids?

"No. ...I'd feel bad for any kid who had to deal with me growing up."

Do you use sarcasm a lot?

"No. I'm not smart enough."

What is the first thing you notice about people?

"Their eyes. You know that whole 'eyes are the windows to the soul' thing? Yeah... so I can't help it. And color, I guess? Facial colors, clothes colors, hair colors. Just... colors. It doesn't make any sense, does it?"

What is your eye color?

"Dark. Dark brown. That black-looking type."

Scary movies or happy endings?

"Scary movies, I guess, if I need to choose. Happy endings are just so... impossible."

Any special talents?

"Not really? I mean, I can take pictures. Of... things. I think I'm pretty good at that. I keep forgetting to ask permission though so maybe I'm not as good as I think."

Where were you born?

"Kagas Inlet, apparently. But after having me, Mom and Dad moved us to the city. Then when Grandma's memory really started going, my parents moved her closer to us, and now that she's gone and I can drive myself, I'm going back to Kagas Inlet to see it again.

"...Sorry, that was too much information, wasn't it?"

Do you have any pets?

"No. The cat at home is my mother's. It stays away from me."

What sort of sports do you play?

"I hike, I guess? But not regularly. Not enough to call it a 'sport' so maybe I don't do anything at all."

How tall are you?

"5'4"."

What was your favorite subject in high school?

"Art. No... photography. I'll just come out and say it. Photography wasn't just a club at my school, it was an actual class we could take as an elective. I was... really, really bad at it at first but I just loved the sounds of the camera, you know? And the window of the viewfinder and the feeling of like, being on my own and seeing something only I can see. And then being able to tell stories about the photos I took and reliving those moments again...! I... I really do love photography."

What is your dream job?

"I'm already doing it. I'm a freelance photographer. But, well... I'm on hiatus. A lot of things happened and I'm not... I can't do it right now. I still love it of course, but I also hate it. I hate... well, I really shouldn't say more.

In the early spring of 2215, the Elder of Arroyo had a child. The child was healthy and well cared for, and survived their first year. When it was time for them to be named, it was remarked upon by all how similar the child appeared to their grandfather, the great Vault Dweller, and so they were named Alex (later, Alexandria).

Two years later, in the fall, the Elder had a second child. He, too, survived his first year, and was named Kaga.

Although the two siblings were close, it was obvious to all who Arroyo's golden child was. Alexandria only grew to ever more resemble her grandfather, and displayed great skill with speechcraft, a mastery of the spear, and a quick mind well-suited to making decisions. Kaga, meanwhile, constantly tested himself against the standard his sister set - and constantly found himself falling short.

When the two were young adults, Arroyo was ravaged by a plague. The Elder herself fell ill, and during this time Alexandria stepped forward to guide the village.

Kaga, meanwhile, spied opportunity. He entered the Temple of Trials and, when the time came for him to face off against a fellow villager in combat, he broke the rules. In the middle of the fight, he pulled out a knife he had hidden in his boot, and gutted his opponent on the temple's sacred grounds.

When he exited the temple triumphant, expecting to be greeted with newfound respect, he was instead met with horror at his actions. Alexandria disappeared into the Elder's tent for many long hours to decide Kaga's fate, while he was held in his own tent by a set of guards.

(It is rumored that, furious at the betrayal of her son - who was supposed to set an example for the rest of the village - the Elder demanded his execution. This would have forced Alexandria, as the acting Elder, to take her own brother's life.)

Kaga, at his sister's spearpoint, was forced from the village. As he went, bitterly angry, he swore revenge on both Alexandria and the whole of Arroyo.

He left behind his mother, slowly recovering from the illness and the loss of her son; his sister, heart-broken; and a sweetheart who, within weeks, would find out that she was with child.

He would not be seen again for five years.

Chiyoko's World The slow shaking of Chiyoko's head does nothing more than display how disgusted and totally "amazed" at how one could create such mess but the tingling jealousy which almost consumes her real intention of being here in the first place is rather alarming. "I don't care who or how many men or women you do it with," she pauses, clearing her throat before continuing her lies- of course, she cares when her subordinate is doing her boy toy! Not that Hikaru means anything but she simply doesn't like her toy playing with someone else. "At least keep it clean, the room reeks of..... sex!"

A mischievous grin appears on Star's face as she closes the door, "I don't think housekeeping would like what they find in my room." Chiyoko follows the blonde's gazes and lets out an annoyed sigh when she sees the guns and torturing tools lying all over the floor. "Plus I'll be keeping my eyes on the screens these days so I won't have time left for other business." It only makes Chiyoko's eyes roll further before focusing back on what they are really here for.

Behind every successful man, there is a woman. Chiyoko Yamasaki takes pride in being that, the perfect wife standing proudly next to the perfect husband- Akihiro Saji, the 4th generation of The Sajias corporation, one of the very few decent men among the rich and powerful. She could never forget how easy it is to approach him, his family's another story but she has had Akihiro in the palm of her hand. Quietly supporting him, doing whatever needs to be done. She doesn't mind the credits going to him, to the world, he's a model example of the man who could have it all. The truth is only known to few people and if you repeat enough times, the lies would eventually become the ultimate truth.

Akihiro's intrigued with her ideas of fun and games when she proposed him the itineraries of the cruise. With how well this trip is going, Chiyoko makes no attempt to hide the curl on her lips. She signs approvingly and stands in front of the multiple screens, playing the hem of her silky red dress which brings out her chocolate brown hair, and deep brown eyes. Once Star has finished setting up, Chiyoko takes one last look at the data pad that holds the guest list, there's only one that she's really after- Eisuke Ichinomiya.

Eisuke's World

Itch- that's the word that comes to his mind, something is off with the unshakable feeling all over his body. Perhaps he hasn't had his coffee yet, a proper decent one by Mia instead of whatever filth Baba has been making. Fingers impatiently tapping on his smartphone, the multi-billionaire is tempted to send another text to Luke who obviously never bothers with technology. "Which floor is that female doctor's office?" The twisted grin and voluntarily offer to visit only means Ota has some kind of sick bond with the doctor that Eisuke has absolutely no interest in knowing but the walk to her office does sound too much of a hassle, now he misses that pager- one easy flick and she will come running and panting, at his disposal with no questions asked. 

Waking up without her by his side is unusual since he normally wakes before her, and not knowing completely what's going on is eating him up a bit but then he has bigger problems on hands. Mia could wait and she will return, eventually, how long would those tests take anyway? 

"I want my woman back now, Luke and learn to use the phone!"

Once the text is sent, Eisuke sits and pounders, eyes on the metallic black invitation lying on the glass table. A party to die for- whoever is behind this seriously has got under the King's skin, much more than he intended to admit. This isn't what he signs up for though he has clearly underestimated how out of hand one cruise trip could get- he's been winning all his life until Mia is nearly lost again. His entire reason to even begin this ridiculous cooperation is to find his father, demanding the truth- the one thing Eisuke naively believes his father could at least do for him but who is he kidding?! The man left his children, he was no longer the loving father Eisuke once remembered. His stubbornness has almost cost Mia's life, for the second time.

Not in the mood to lose or continue with these sick jokes and games, Eisuke Ichinomiya cannot wait to crush them in their next "party", the only dead body shall be the mastermind behind this fiesta.

Moments later.... Mika’s World

"Oh, Cluedo is my favorite broad game." 

"No one asks, old man." The devil angelic face smirks but soon rolls his eyes when he spots the pout from Baba. "Snap out of it. You're far too old to play cute."

A team of six arrive is led to a double door, Baba swings open excitedly and a tall figure with a hand raised in the air comes to sight.

"Freeze!" 

You hear Mamoru calls instinctively while your eyes travel down to the floor with a lifeless body lying face down before any of you could take a step further, a loud siren rings and a mental cage rolls down from the high ceiling, trapping the man in captive who slowly turns around as he lowers the crowbar in hand, his expressionless face meets the rest of your shocked ones. "Boss?!"

"Welcome everyone." 

The computerized voice announcement sends more chill than excitement to each person in the large room- one that no one has the luxury to look around but time is all they have.

"Your mission tonight is to solve the murder of Mr. Shigeru Kikushima, CEO of Kikushima Group. Everything you need is in this room, let the game begin."

No explanation is given about Eisuke Ichinomiya's presence before the others but his "planned" imprisonment obviously implies proofing one CEO's innocence along with solving the mysterious "death" of another. 

A set of cold dark eyes peers into the screen and studies closely- Mitsunari Baba, Ota Kisaki, Mamoru Kishi, Hyogo Kaga, Seiji Goto, Mika Hijikata and of course, Eisuke Ichinomiya. How disappointingly naïve of him to believe that he could fool around with their fake credentials, though, for law enforcement, they are fairly good actors. Their history and intention bore the mastermind- Chiyoko Hanasaki is only interested in one person and one person only- Eisuke Ichinomiya. 

"It's okay," The woman grins, her fingers gently brushing the screen and follow the outline of his unreadable face, "our time will come soon, Eisuke. Very soon."

NOTES: Let my challenge begin- solving a murder, proving Eisuke’s innocence- wait perhaps I don’t want to prove it, he could rot right there XD

Kaga slipped, lost his footing, and that was it. It was over.

He collapsed on the sands and lay there, panting. Any attempt to move failed, his power armor whirring and clicking in distress; Alexandria must have hit some vital components. The woman herself loomed over him; she, too, was clad in power armor, although she had forgone the helmet. Her wild mane of hair probably wouldn’t fit under it.

Alexandria had managed to slip her spear into a few gaps in his armor; the wounds spiked painfully in time with his heartbeat.

Stupid. Why had he ever even tried? What chance did he have against the golden child, Arroyo’s perfect, precious, Chosen One?

He closed his eyes and waited for the end.

And waited.

And waited.

There was a shuffling noise, and then a heavy thump. He cracked open one eye and peered at his sister, who was now sitting at his side. She wore an unreadable expression.

Fuck. They had been close, once. So much so that it felt sometimes like he could read her mind, and she his. And now, eight years apart, he felt like he knew nothing at all about her.

“Get it over with,” he rasped. “Kill me.”

Her voice shook slightly when she spoke.

“I couldn’t kill you back then, Kaga. I’m not going to kill you now.”

What?

“I was exiled,” he said slowly, as if either of them could have forgotten.

“Only because I managed to talk mother down from executing you,” Alexandria replied. Kaga blinked slowly, stunned. “When she found out...Kaga, she was furious. She would have had me prove a point to the whole village: a life for a life. That she was impartial, even when it came to her own kin.” Alexandria laid her spear across her lap. “I told her she couldn’t, said it would set a terrible precedent, that it wasn’t what grandfather would have wanted.” And here she met Kaga’s eyes again, expression soft and tears in her eyes. “I’m sorry I couldn’t do better.”

Kaga opened his mouth, closed it. Tried to sit up and then cried out in pain, falling back against the ground. Alexandria instantly became a whirlwind of movement, pulling stimpaks from the pouches around her waist and moving to treat his injuries. He watched her work, less confused now as to why she would even bother.

Alexandria was covered in tattoos. Kaga had seen her receive her first, and although he would later find out how painful they were to get, she had been stoic and resolute through the whole process. The needle had dipped into her skin again and again, and she made no sound as the prancing wolf that represented the Miller line was inked onto her shoulder. Kaga’s own wolf had been altered, a dozen arrows stabbing through it, branding him a traitor and an outcast.

Right now he watched the ink on her hands as she worked. On her thumb, pointer, and middle finger were fine, highly detailed tattoos of the bones that lay just beneath her skin, marking her skill as a healer. She was always going to lead the village, but in her teen years she had spent hours in the perfumed medical building, following Hakunin around like a puppy. Wide-eyed in wonder at the man’s abilities and knowledge. Kaga had always though him a crazy old man, wildly superstitious and speaking in riddles, but had never said any of that to the man’s face. There was no use in insulting your doctor. And the man had talent – it was evident in how he had managed to pass it on to Alexandria. She sat back, and Kaga could breath without pain now.

Slowly, he sat up. Alexandria was looking away from him, out into the distance.

“It doesn’t matter anymore, anyway,” she said. “You got what you wanted. Arroyo is destroyed.”

“What?!” he yelled. She didn’t even flinch.

“This group – the Enclave – they came in while I was away, on a mission to try to save the village from starvation. They burned everything down, took everyone who didn’t die in the initial attack away with them, I’m going to their base now.”

He stared at her – at Arroyo’s perfect, precious Chosen one – and realized that she had always been just that.

Even when they were children.

“What are you going to do there?” he finally asked.

She turned to him, smiling bitterly.

“I’m going to kill every one of those bastards I can get my hands on. Probably die in the attempt.”

He tapped a finger against his leg, metal against metal. Looking across the sands, he saw the car he had defiantly stood in front of to force her out to confront him.

“Got a seat for one more?” he asked, nodding towards it.

Lexi grinned, genuinely this time.

“Like I said, it’s probably a suicide mission.”

“And what better way to go out, than in a glorious battle of revenge alongside my sister?”

She stood, and offered him a hand.

He took it.

Chapter 23:  All The Help She’d Get

Mia’s & Eisuke’s World “I think this is a mistake.” Mia stares at the reflection of Eisuke as his back is facing her.

“I rarely make any mistake.” He says coldly, “And your opinion isn’t required on this matter.”

It never is! Mia internally screams her remarks, no one ever values her opinion, they never bother asking because her thoughts don’t matter. She has no say- not in the matter of getting caged and sold in a black market auction, or taking her time to digest the shock and confusion before choosing her NEW OWNER and most definitely never has the choice of being involved in so many troubles. 

She hasn’t asked for any of it, she always bites her lips and accepts her fate because she believes everything happens for a reason and each painful experience is just as precious as the rest. Being an unexpected highlight of that auction has miraculously led her to Eisuke, the one man who’s misunderstood by many yet she sees right through him at critical times. 

“Let the others find him!” She clings to him from behind, begging him not to go because this is one of those times. Something is not right and if she’d feel this is a trap, so does Eisuke.

His hands rest on hers, squeezing them for a few seconds before pulling them away. “He’s my father.”

“You don’t even know if he will be there or if they have actual information on him.”

“Yes, they do.” His hands back on his tie while his eyes stay on her. “I need to know the truth. He’s my father. Aren’t you the one who goes on all the time about how important family is?”

“I am your family, Eisuke. And I’m your…….” Her argument trails off, who is she to him? His woman, his girlfriend, his fiancée? They haven’t exactly put a tag on it and Eisuke hasn’t even once mentioned about their future, does he intend to make her Mrs. Ichinomiya or she’ll see someone else takes her place over some business deals while Eisuke makes her stay? It is very possible, Mia knows that deep in her heart, she simply chooses not to think about it. But right now, she’s not exactly convincing. 

“He’s my family.” He clears his throat then draws a long, shaky breath. “I deserve to know the truth.”

“But this could get you killed, Eisuke. Just listen to me for once, please!” Her plea makes no difference, as expected. She has lost again, she could never win against him. Not with her concern, morals and certainly not with her love. “I’m your family too.” She murmurs once again, mostly to herself.

All these years of care, tolerance, and understanding, persuading herself that he always has a good reason for whatever he does because the ends justify his means. With that, the bathroom door closes behind her. She needs some space, anywhere free from Eisuke. 

“I’ll see you at the party,” he stands by the door frame, “though I prefer to show up together." 

Mia sighs, nearly laughing at herself. This is his way of telling her that he’s being understanding, he has changed his preferences for her mood swing.

Standing in front of the mirror with her hands gripping onto the marble sink, she thinks hard. What can she do to stop him? She pulls her hair back into a high ponytail then holds an eye makeup pen up close to her lash line. Who would help her to make it happen? She presses her finger on the outside corner of her eyelid and draws a thin line. Next, she picks up a makeup brush and swirls it in a small container of blushes before dabbing it onto her cheeks. What is Eisuke most afraid of? Picking up a lipstick she carefully applies a deep, glossy red, one that matches her dress perfectly. Eisuke does like her to stand out regardless of the efforts she has spent on staying away from spotlights. It’s simply not possible, not when she’s with Eisuke Ichinomiya.

That’s it!

An idea strike, a brilliant one she would think but perhaps not to others or at least it could only be brilliant with their help. She needs to be careful with her choice of help though, someone who has the knowledge to make it happen and the ability to keep it under everyone’s radar.

"Why can’t you be a supportive sister like you should for once?!”

The room is left with dead silence again, honestly, you hate Eisuke’s suite so much! Glaring at your twins with your fists clenched, you don’t even know where to begin. With so much going on and now being accused of a lousy sister really should be the least of your worry. You exhale deeply and huff out in frustration, “Soryu hasn’t waked up yet.” Eying Luke on the side, he nods as confirmation. “I need to find the shooter." 

"And I need to stop Eisuke from dying.”

You have to bite your tongue before slipping out something you’d regret. Mia worries a lot and normally you wouldn’t blame her, with the deals and underground businesses of Eisuke’s, she would be insane not to think so. But, death? When Soryu is the actual one lying in bed, the only truth you want to tell your sister is to stop being dramatic but her teary eyes meet yours, whispering out a request you couldn’t ignore. “Please, help me.”

Whatever reasons Mia has, she has persuaded Luke to take part and now you are her only hope.

“Fine,” you mutter, “just text me the essentials, skip me for the planning.” You quickly add then excuse yourself for a conversation you have neither the time nor the energy to engage.

You still need to meet Goto for another dinner party, just how many more of these damn parties do you have to attend before anyone of you are even close to finding who the heck is manipulating this whole orchestra!?

Chapter 22:  Can You Handle It?

“He’s alive, isn’t he?” Kaga’s appearance isn’t exactly welcome at this moment but his comment just makes it worse.

“You piece of shit!!! You left him there to die!”

All you could see is red, the blood of Soryu Oh and the rage boiling inside. You are beyond furious, shaking with fury, betrayal, and disbelief. Like being smashed by a fifty-foot high wave, unprepared. You couldn’t have seen it coming, Kaga is reckless, sure but he’s not that ruthless. Not when it comes to human lives.

“So he’s alive then.”

“Oh my god, are you even hearing yourself?”

“No, are you hearing yourself? I WAS DOING MY GOD DAMN JOB!”

“Is that what you tell yourself when you leave him there to bleed to death!?”

“Fuck sake! He was fine when I left! And he’s still breathing, isn’t he?”

You raise your hand and slap Hyogo Kaga across the face as hard as you could. A large red hand-print is now evident on his cheek, the two of you stare at each other. No one else in the room at all bothers to say another word, let out a snort or even hint what they have been thinking once Soryu has finished the surgery. Luke had returned to the suite in time and joined Mariana so Eisuke was relieved that his best friend wasn’t going to die in the middle of high sea. The blood transfusion had weakened you slightly but not nearly enough to get over your disappointment.

“What is wrong with you?”

“What is wrong with you! You’ve gone soft! If his life could save the rest of the people on this ship, I would personally end it without a blink of an eye!”

Your hand raises again, Kaga grabs and twists it a little, his voice booms through the spacious suite. 

“It’s not my problem that you two fucked or the air head is in love with you. Don’t blame this on me! I’m a public safety officer, who the hell are you!?”

Kaga’s POV

Today is one of those shitty days I particularly hate, total bust at work, man down and the ex-fiancée who I’ve recently reconciled with now wishes me dead. To top it off, I see a man waiting outside my room with an angry expression on his face.

“What the hell were you thinking?”

It’s a relief that Mr. Hijikata couldn’t raise his voice, I honestly don’t think I’d take another meltdown without punching someone in the face.

“Your action could have killed my client’s child!” I am about to swipe my key card and continue this unwanted conversation inside but the door swings open and Soryu’s puppy glares at us.

“Get lost! You are not welcome here!” Throwing my bags out the door, the young mobster quickly shuts it to our faces.

Eiji san looks sympathetic for a second before his stern expressions returns. “I’ve warned you how dangerous they are, stop jeopardizing cases and people lives. Kaga, you are not a hero. Stay away from my client.” As if things couldn’t get any worse, I pull out a pack of cigarette to only find it empty. “Oh fucking great!” “Here.” I turn to see the lazy detective offering me the one thing I crave most, “I take it that you have no place to stay? If you ain’t gonna complain about sleeping on the couch then this way.”

Kishi hasn’t said much once I’m in his suite, not that I’m in any mood to talk. “Well, keep this pack and help yourself with the mini bar. I’m gonna head back, I’d lay low if I were ya, kid. You ain’t exactly popular right now and I seriously don’t wanna deal with an actual dead body just yet.”

With a firm pat on my shoulder, he lets out a loud yawn and leaves. The headache of Namba nagging is not comparable to my rage that’s on the edge of erupting. Whoever is responsible has a hell lot to pay and they’ll be sorry for ever crossing me.

The room is filled with dead silence after Kaga has stormed out of the suite and you choose to cool down by the balcony before calling Jin.

Goto has already filled him in but you’re not happy with how the mission has gone, truth be told, no one is. 

“Keeping him out of trouble was one of your missions.” Jin says bluntly, “If we get caught up in the rights and wrongs, we lose track of the real issue.”

“The real issue is he investigates alone without sharing important information and almost causes a team member’s life!” You try to hold onto your temper, this isn’t Jin or anyone’s fault but Kaga’s.

However, Jin’s gentle reminder backfires. “We are public safety, it’s not up to us to question morality.“ 

"I am in the MPD!”

Silence.

Is he frowning? Scratching his chin likes he always does while searching for answers? “You were one of our best Mika, one of us. I remember who you were and what you’re capable of but do you? Or running away for the past few years have completely changed you?”

“You’re fighting desperately not to realize that I’m right, you don’t want to see it. This isn’t about Kaga or who the shooter is, you have made things personal.” He goes on quickly, “I wouldn’t put you on the mission if I don’t think you’d handle it.”

”You are upset, I get that and if you can’t do it, fine, withdraw from the case now or else do your job. So can you handle it or not, Mika?“

Damn him, Jin is right. You don’t want to think, the thought of losing Soryu Oh for good has terrified you. Working in homicide isn’t pretty but you don’t go to work every day worrying if any of your partners are going to make it or convince yourself that it’s alright because that’s what they sign up for. As much as you love preventing crime, it takes tremendous sacrifice to be a Public Safety Officer. Facing dead bodies and catching murderers by day with occasional one night stands by night leads a much easier life.

But Jin’s right, he often is. You’ve been running away for years and yet fate has put you back on spot, facing your fear, pushing your limits and perhaps this really is your true calling whether you like it or not.

Eisuke’s World

Meanwhile back in Eisuke’s suite, the next phase of the party is about to begin. Mia sees a black envelope in Eisuke’s hand and peeks from his side.

An icy hot shudder runs down Mia’s spine and she’d feel the blood draining from her pale face, her breath stops short with her heart stutters a wild, frantic convulsion in her chest. 

Just how far is this going and when will it stop? She couldn’t stomach another surgery on the cruise or see anymore dying body, especially when one could be Eisuke so easily. 

She wouldn’t be able to live without him, he is her whole world so there’s only one thing left to do. She is going to stop him from going to the auction, putting an end to this nonsense before the mission costs her the love of her life.

Chapter 21: Last Apology

Your steps are fast, heavy and furious through the narrowed corridor. It is easy to get to the location but not so much when you and Goto have to keep a poker face with all the security cameras and passengers around. Cursing Kaga in your head, you bloody hope whatever trouble is up ahead is something manageable for just you and Goto.

He exchanges a quick look with you before bursting open the door to the deck. You rush inside, one hand already reaching for the gun that’s strapped onto your inner thigh but your eyes widen at the sight of a dark figure sitting on the floor with his head down.

“Goto!”

The two of you run towards the corner and you’re soon greeted by a rare yet familiar smile. “I’m okay.”

You get down on one knee and press a hand onto Soryu’s wound, it must have been at least 5 minutes but he’s still bleeding. Goto begins asking the obvious, who did it, how it happened and where’s Kaga. You would have told him to stop, saves the talking for later but this is the best time to get answers in case there’s no later or whenever that maybe.

Every breath causes a new stab of pain to the mobster but he answers as much as he could. “He’s following someone, next there’s a bullet firing at us. He’s chasing after the shooter.” Soryu takes a deep breath and you press the palm of your hand firmly over the leaking wound in hope to make a difference. Stop! Stop! Just stop! You need the bleeding to stop and medic, he needs medical attention now. The heavy mixtures of emotion is overwhelming, your thought processes stops, blinded by fear, anger and pain.

Thankfully Goto has already put an arm around Soryu and helping him up in no time. The drunk act is all you’d afford and lucky enough the place has quiet down since breakfast session is over.

You’d hear the vague gasps and questions firing in every direction as soon as you set foot inside Eisuke’s suite, the king himself particularly demands you for answers that you are reluctant to share.

“Luke!!” Your half scream and half cry has shut everyone up but not for long as the peculiar doctor has wandered off somewhere else without his cell phone. “First aid kit!” You bark and see from the corner of your eyes that Mia has run off to get one, your sight never leaves the wounded man.

He shivers as you apply the disinfectant, too weak to give further reaction. He would have pumped himself up for an explanation, reassuring his friends that he’s fine but instead, he places a hand on your cheek and wipes away the tears that you don’t even notice. “I’m sorry.”

He murmurs weakly, “I am sorry for that night, no matter how mad…” His pauses take longer each time as he searches for the right words, eyes occasionally glancing sideways while Eisuke orders Baba and Mamoru to find Luke. “It shouldn’t happen, Mika. You said no and I should have stopped.”

Shaking your head repeatedly, you sob and wish that none of this is real. Taking a deep breath, Soryu moves his hand from your cheek and join yours on his wound. “I’m ashamed. I am not the man my grandfather teaches me to be, I….” It’s getting harder for him to speak, probably due to the loss of blood or the fact that he’s trying not to let his tears fall, or possibly both.

You watch as he mouths the last three words with his eyes closed, “Soryu!!! No, keep your eyes open! Don’t sleep, no, you can’t die!! Your hear me? Soryu Oh! You can’t die!!!”

The suite has only gotten louder, Samejima and Inui arguing in the background, Eisuke yelling on the phone but the only voice that has everyone’s attention is Ota.

“Mirana, get ready, you’ve got a patient coming in for surgery now!”

Eisuke’s World

Eisuke Ichinomiya shows tremendous leadership skills even at times like this, especially at time like this. Collected, calm yet demanding. Giving orders to his men while Mika Hijikata remains a mess. He has thought about defeating her of course, in his own cruel way but when the time has come, he realizes no black mailing or competing would ever break her the way she is now. Perhaps his friend would be relief, grateful even. Soryu is such a fool when it comes to her, the woman who deceives them and nearly cost them their friendship.

Eisuke could imagine the grin on Soryu’s face if he’s awake but the king quickly pushes the worthless image aside and concentrates back to his phone, bossing Mamoru and Baba to clean up the mess on the deck, waiting for the regular updates on Luke’s whereabouts from The Dragons while Ota and Mia are running around to turn the VIP suite into a temporary operating theatre.

His eyes however are fixed on his best friend’s dying body, ironically enough Eisuke finds no urge to smirk at Mika’s state. He would have if this was one of the stupid Public Safety and he couldn’t quite recognize the emotions he’s experiencing, he never likes having them since they are unnecessary. He would have done anything to get rid of feelings if he could, his time should be well spent on other pressing matters like checking the background of this British doctor who doesn’t seem too surprised at the situation, finding Luke, (God damnit, where is he?!) catching the son of a bitch who shot Soryu Oh, uncovering the truth- whatever that might be.

This is no ordinary cruise, he has no clue of what or who they are up against but the unidentified group must be huge, powerful enough to be well structured yet under the radar without Soryu or him knowing. Goto pulls up some files on the laptop and gestures Eisuke to walk over without tipping the others off, the female doctor looks clean on first glance.

No sudden income or off shore account, just one dedicated surgeon who has saved a lot of patients. A lot, more than it records on paper. Patients who were on the bottom of waiting list or got dropped due to funding during new drug’s trial. Patients who were supposed to be dead had somehow magically survived.

Eisuke begins having doubts, she is likely to be working for the mysterious group but is this part of their plan? Setting up the reckless captain and brings him down while expecting Ota to get Dr. Edwards involves so she could easily kill whoever’s lying on the table. It doesn’t matter who they shoot as long as it sends a message- they know, about the undercover, the investigation.

What worries Eisuke more is their identities, their hidden agendas, the auctions, just how MUCH do they know? Oh and how he hates being in the dark with absolutely ZERO control! This cruise is not to the King’s liking at all.

Eisuke shifts his gazes back and forth from the screen to the silhouettes in the middle of his suite, heartbeat raising at the split-second of his hesitation- gambling between Soryu’s life and their darkest secrets. Whoever has the most to lose, it would never be Eisuke Ichiomiya- the man who wins it all.
