Hair Color: Black. Hairstyle: Long, reaches his lower back, super wavy and silky. Typically has it pulled up in a ponytail with most of his bangs brushed to one side and two longer strands of hair falling down with them. Eye Color: Red. Skintone: Tan. Notable Features: Stubbled chin, sometimes grows the stubble out a bit more across his cheeks and jaw. Pierced ears, as well as his nips after a dare. Multiple tattoos on his arms, chest, back and legs. Wardrobe Style: Goth Dad. Lots of skinny jeans and black short sleeved/sleeves cuffed at the elbow button up shirts with various designs. Will usually have a chain on a belt he wears. If he is at home though you're just getting him in sweats and bunny slippers. Personality: Tired Dad energy. Stickler for the rules in games and has to enforce them. Easygoing and good natured. Looks out for everyone and isn't afraid to fight back to defend the people he loves. Mainly just wants to be at home cooking in the peace and quiet. Desperately needs a day off from being the owner of these teenagers' brain cell. Very technologically savvy and intelligent. Inquisitive and curious about the world, especially in studying Ancient magic now that he knows it exists. Always has to have 5 plans at the ready in case shit goes sideways. Sarcasm and snark for days. Can be a bit of a gossipy bitch when around the others. Loving and very attentive partner, he just wants someone to shower in love that won't leave him okay. He's got abandonment trauma and depression. Teller of corny dad jokes. Former wannabe Magician, will not tell a soul about it. Hobbies: Cooking, finding new recipes, binge watching the same show for the 50th time, hiking, camping, rock climbing, boxing, journaling, doing card tricks. History:

Born and raised as his parents only child, and was incredibly close to all of his family growing up, but especially his cousin Cecelia.

Became best friends with Max after he first met Cecelia at the party and became attached at the hip.

Originally wanted to be a magician growing up but that dream died out in middle school (along with him having a period of having buzzed hair because the other kids kept picking on him), and he eventually found his new passion in cooking. However, he kept up private magic shows for Cecelia while she was in the hospital because he knew it made her smile.

Like his cousin Kat, he watched a lot of the people he loved perish and lost them within what felt like a large fell swoop, each one more devastating than the last.

Started dating a girl named Paige in high school, much to everyone's dismay as her parents were extremely snooty but he thought he loved her.

They had the twins, and they became his world. A month after their birth, however, Paige abandons the family, cuts off all contact and simply leaves a note telling Maddox to not tell the girls about her. He falls into a long depression, but tries everything he can to be the best dad for his girls despite it.

Moves to San Francisco with Max and works hard at the family security company, overseeing all of I2's security measures.

Has also taken some culinary classes on the downlow and is going for his degree.

make references for the ocs that will be on my page (francis, maddox, cecie, iarmys, inanna, and ayelet (ayelet is @boxxed-upkr ‘s)) (three are done, but i may redo two of them..)

make lil chibis of the above charas to sit on my home profile page

after teams are announced, make borders for this year’s attack icons

hunt down a person to do an 800 level revenge chain with, to try to be in the top 3 longest chains of the year

Oof, tough since my ao3 has only 3 published ones and my fanfic.net profile is. uh. old. And most of my newer fic stuff has mainly been with friends so... Hm! Let's give this a go shall we!

Splashdown (Star Wars). A birthday gift for @moobrvoobl-moobmoob-oobmpoobroom over on discord about her OC since we both have gained brainrot over the others' work. Strike awakes someplace almost unknown to find someone familiar.

No Going Back (Light on the Dark) (Star Wars, Maddox [GFFA]). My first dip back into writing fics since going hardcore with original work for a time thanks to Uni, and I'm glad to say I still got it! Maybe I'll post it here sometime if there's interest - but the logline is: Maddox in disguise has a confrontation with Darth Vader.

The Christmas Calamity (Eddsworld). While descendant OC-centric, it's one of the few I'd been planning and writing for since 2017 and finishing it in Christmastime 2020 felt immensely relieving. Three bickering descendants of the Eddsworld trio have to save Christmas from an old friend's sleigh and a new foe's threat. Be warned, the characters cuss like sailors and it was one of my first attempts at writing horror, but there IS heart to it that still gets me. Unlike the others, this IS on my ao3 at Christi_Bee, so if you're fine with all these, have fun!

Maddox Auberlaint - an FFXIV OMC

Just A short summary of thoughts:

Coerthas Highlands boy before the Fall of Dalamud, however he fled when it happened because fuck the Holy See. However, his family stayed behind and likely takes refuge at/near Falcon’s Nest. He understands they were not in a position to go with him.

His family tithes to House Haillenarte. Mother is retired due to an injury and so she and his father became farmers, basically. (Which is now basically impossible due to the everlasting winter. They likely try and work with game/animals as much as possible now.)

Maddox is entirely self-sufficient, hunting (can raise and use hawks too) kill and skin raised and wild game.

At present, he is in Limsa taking up jobs here and there. Privateering is not below him and he’s taken to boat once or twice as a temp hired hand.

Maddox is not afraid to kill, and has likely put down a man or two, a dragon or two, anything else between. It means very little to him, he’ll do what it takes to survive. And, when he’s scraped savings together; goes back to Coerthas to bring his family some of his earnings, and other necessities.

Maddox isn't entirely educated, certainly not dumb. He can read and write enough, what is necessary for when he was a farm boy, but he isn't from the City Proper, He's Coerthan, so probably finds Ishgardian's to be really bratty. But they're pretty things, too. He absolute has a superiority complex, what would those posh, blue-butt lordlings and ladies be without they of the fields? Nothing. What would Ishgardian’s be without their kind, hunting and providing for their over abundant tables? Nothing. Ah yes, he tries to avoid them as much as possible when he returns because he would have a lot of trouble holding his tongue.

He’s likely gotten into many brawls, good natured and... not so good natured... Probably sent a few beyond when flying into a rage. Almost been there himself probably... Hmmm.

Maddox is most likely NOT his true given name, and changed it when he left Coerthas because it was too... Coerthan/Ishgardian and figured that might impede him. However, he does not dislike his family and so kept his surname, though he rarely gives this out..

anyways, probably more to come as I run around and think.

I talk a lot about Kat but don't as much about Iris and Maddox which is a Crime and will be fixed bc I'm gonna work on all three of their profiles here soon. Maybe even an incorrect quotes for the yugiverse too.

(also these are all working character profiles and are subject to heavy revision. I’m including the important characters who I don’t currently have backstories for, just to give a relatively complete cast of characters.)

Captain Ista Remak: 

An Alchemisttrained under Zoya Petrakova. She specializes in fire alchemy and has a specialized transmutation circle tattooed on her palm.

Born to a family of traveling acrobats. She has a strained relationship with her family. Ista’smother is a firm believer in the old religion and despises Alchemy andAlchemists. When Ista wanted to leave home to study under Zoya, she was told notto return home if she left.

She’s a captain in the military and was transferred from the Special Ops Division Five to Division Twelve after Zoyabetrayed the military and disappeared. She now resides under Major Reiner Weiss and Brigadier General Barrett Pike, who she met at fifteen when she was drafted by the military and sent to the front lines.

She’s referred to by the code-name “Ghost”.

Major General Zoya Petrakova:

A former Major General in the military. She also specializes in fire alchemy and has trained several students. She abandoned the military after returning from war due to the things she was forced to do. This lead to her heading a terrorist cell with the goal of abolishing the military. However, her morals have since been skewed and she’s begun to target civilians as well as military officials, uncaring of who gets in the way.

Brigadier General Barrett Pike:

A high ranking military official planning to overthrow the current government alongside his sister, Kestrel.

Lieutenant Noel (Noah) Quinn:

A military sniper and a member of Division Twelve. He grew up in the north as his father was stationed at Fort Maddox, one of the two fortresses in the mountains. He previously worked as a mercenary before General Pike found him and offered him a position in his division.

“Wolf”, AKA: SOPL0771:

A human/wolf hybrid Chimera and a member of the Special OpsProject Lycan. He doesn’t remember his real name or much of anything before military scientists began experimenting on him and others, though he does occasionally have flashes of his past. He’s referred to mostly by his ID number, though eventually people start calling him Wolf as a joke and it sticks.

Initially, he’s sent by officials to assassinate the members of Pike’s Division.

Sergeant Esme Shaw:

A fifteen year old girl and the last of Zoya’s students. She begun learning Fire Alchemy, but after Zoya disappeared she began learning under Ista instead, though Ista is reluctant to teach her more. She comes from a family of travelers (they’re essentially this world’s equivalent of the Roma people).

Major Reiner Weiss:

Ista’s good friend and General Pike’s right hand. He met Ista during the war when he was twenty-one and she was fifteen and promised that he would always be there to watch her back. The two are fiercely loyal to one another. He lost his left arm in the war and has been wearing a prosthetic limb ever since. Due to this, he likes to refer to Ista as his “left hand”.

(I’m unsure if I’m making him an Alchemist or not yet, but that’s certainly a possibility.)

Full Name: Iris Ophelia McGinnis. Nicknames: Irey, Petals (by her grandfather), Cupcake (a nickname that happened for a good while from Alister) Aliases: N/a Nationality: American, Japanese citizenship, ⅓ Irish Birthplace: Domino City, Japan. Gender: Female (she/her, comfortable with they/them as well). Sexuality: Demisexual demi/biromantic. Age: 19-21 years old. Birthday: September 7th. Star Sign: Virgo. Occupation: Nursing student -> Pediatric nurse; counter clerk at Kame Game; book seller at Marcie’s Marvelous Books; Pro Duelist. Voiceclaim: Janet Varney.

Hair Color: Blonde. Hairstyle: Shoulder length, very thick and more shaggy than wavy (though it does curl at the ends), has long sideswept bangs over one eye. Eye Color: Violet. Skintone: Pale. Notable Features: Scar underneath her right eye. Typically wears dark, heavy makeup. Pierced ears, two piercings on the top of each ear, a tongue piercing and a naval piercing. Also got her nips pierced on a drunken dare by Maddox. After Season 4, she starts getting various tattoos as well, mainly on her arms, legs and one on her collarbone. Outfit Style: Thrifted goth, usually getting a lot of her clothes second hand or on sale. Lots of blacks, not a lot of room for other colors unless they're accents. Loves a good fishnet stockings and ripped jeans combo. After season 4 and she gets into Dueling in tournaments more and more, her younger brother finally got to go on a shopping spree and get her some new clothes, coming in touch with her roots as Kaiba's big sister but even more goth. Accessories: Silver rings on her fingers she'll find antiquing, choker necklaces (definitely a lot more of the spikey ones early on).

Personality: Very snarky and sarcastic. Suffers heavily from resting bitch face; also tends to not be able to hide it when she does not like somebody. Beyond that, however, she typically struggles with expressing emotions and vulnerability; to the point that not even her siblings have ever seen her even shed a tear. She tends to also bury a lot of her more negative emotions and feelings to "deal with it one day when she's dead". Is absolutely fantastic with kids and animals. Isn't afraid to be blunt when she needs to be and can be overly straightforward. When you've earned her respect and care, she will be the most loyal person in the world. Very much has a caretaker nature and wants to help heal everyone she can and look out for everyone. Tired Big Sister energy as well as depressed broke zillennial energy. Hobbies: Reading, annotating books,  gardening, thrift shopping, collecting Addams Family merch where she can afford it, researching anything and everything, cooking, playing different card and board games with her family. History:

Grew up being raised by her single mother. Steven was a very infrequent part of her life early on, and was not a good or loving presence and kept a firm distance.

He disappeared almost completely out of her life after the death of her half-brother, Henry, and after his reaction to her mother finding out that she both had MS and was pregnant again with River.

Showed back up when Iris was in middle school to bribe her mother into letting her and River attend a dinner with his boss, and she met the Kaiba brothers. He tried to arrange a marriage contract between her and Seto, and it became a heated battle.

Tried to put up with it to help keep an eye on Seto and Mokuba, though fought against it the best she could. The boys became like brothers to her and River.

Her Mom and Roland worked to protect the kids and eventually fell in love with each other.

Has quite a bit of trauma from Steven, as well as Gozaburo, during the time leading up to Seto taking over KaibaCorp, all that she took in an attempt to protect her siblings.'

Started taking college credits her last year of high school and even graduated high school a semester early. Went to college on a full scholarship to get her nursing degree.

Meets Alister a year before the story starts when he begins working for KaibaCorp in the IT department (all undercover to try and take them down from the inside) and they end u pbecoming friends and later something more.

aa wow this is super cool! i love how the whole color scheme and style in general really stylizes this and makes it look really cool!! the wings also look awesome. the sleeve of the closest arm is a bit bunched in awkward places, i.e the elbow. A sleeve would be more tense and not wrinkled on the outside of a bent elbow. also, since the hand is in the pocket and the character is profile, there would be perspective to the lower half of the arm, and it would be partially hidden by the upper arm. from the angle, the other side of the hood on the hoodie should also be visible. i looked up maddox-rider, and you emulate them well! - mod ollie

Backstory:

Born to an Olympic Equestrian and an actress.

Her older sister was diagnosed with her illness when Kat was about 3.

Grew up trying to keep her sisters spirits high and the two having this beautiful and inseparable bond with each other, especially in the face of their parents marriage troubles they did their best to keep from the girls, and their mothers narcissitic and controlling tendencies.

Grew up with her cousins whenever they got to visit and was especially close to her cousin, Sonia, they were best friends.

Played a very early, early prototype to Duel Monsters, before it was ever Duel Monsters, in the hospital rooms her sister frequented.

Lost a lot of her family within a year of each other; the Harmonia sinking, then Mason passing away in a car accident, then Cecelia and then Evangeline. Would be adopted by her godparents, who the will dictated were to take her in the event anything happened to her parents; the agreement was decided as the best move by both them, Maximillion and Wes.

Moved to San Francisco with her godparents, Maddox, her nieces and Max when Industrial Illusions properly started up.

Got to beta test Duel Monsters for her big brother and competed and won in the very first tournament.

Continued the tournament circuit, making time for her family as much as she could.

Met Kaiba at a tournament and they quickly became dedicated rivals and her goal has been to beat him some day, as he was the only person she had never beaten before.

Is with Max when he gets the news that Kaiba has been defeated and she's more upset that somebody beat him before she did than anything else; though, there is definitely quite a bit of surprise when she goes to try and figure out who this Yugi kid is and finds he himself has an Item like the one Max has as a fake eye.

Goes to Duelist Kingdom to watch, since she was barred from competing, and begins to uncover more than she could have ever imagined.

How will 2017 Pitt football follow up on beating Penn State and Clemson?

The Panthers are progressing nicely, but this season is probably a bump in the road.

In my North Carolina preview, I mentioned how Larry Fedora had the unstable program achieving at a strangely normal rate. The Tar Heels are now recruiting and playing at a top-30 level. They cannot be called underachievers.

Narduzzi has pulled off a similar feat.

It felt like I was bringing it up in the Pitt preview every year just to twist the knife: the Panthers had, over the course of two decades, experienced brutal close-game luck.

Since Johnny Majors retired and Walt Harris took over, Pitt has had a winning record in one-possession games just five times and has been at least two games under .500 in such games nine times. In this nearly two-decade sample, the Panthers are 35-53 in these contests, a 0.397 win percentage.

The Panthers have managed to attend 13 bowls and share two conference titles in these 18 years. If these demons that have taken over Heinz Field ever relinquish their powers, Pitt could easily become an annual ACC Coastal contender.

I wrote in 2015 that bringing in a guy who helped kill the “Sparty, No!” meme was a deft one.

Baggage: shed. Sort of. Narduzzi is still struggling to get his classes balanced and takes on a massive rebuild of the two-deep, but not only have his Panthers reminded everyone of the program’s upside, they’ve finally won their share of close games.

Pitt is 7-7 in one-possession finishes over the last two years. For this program, that feels like 14-0. Last year they beat two Power 5 champions — Penn State early and national champ Clemson in November — by a combined four points. They were two of the most exciting, symbolic Pitt wins of the last decade. They survived shootouts with Georgia Tech (37-34) and Syracuse (76-61) and finished 20th in S&P+, their best finish in seven years. They fielded maybe their best offense since Dan Marino was quarterback. They took on a brutal schedule, one featuring six S&P+ top-25 teams, and landed punches.

There were still regrets, though.

There was the 45-38 loss to Oklahoma State, which could have been a win with one fewer deep-ball breakdown.

There was the 37-36 loss at UNC, in which the Tar Heels scored the winning touchdown with two seconds left.

There was the 39-36 loss to Virginia Tech, which could have flipped if the Panthers had managed a minus-2 turnover margin instead of minus-3.

There was the 31-24 bowl loss to Northwestern, which could have flipped had the Panthers held NU’s Justin Jackson to 150 rushing yards or so instead of 224.

2016 was huge. But the Panthers still left wins on the board, and despite the top-20 S&P+ finish, they ended 8-5. The demons aren’t vanquished just yet, and last year’s pangs might feel a little stronger as Narduzzi attempts a third-year rebuild.

Pitt has to replace star running back James Conner, quarterback Nathan Peterman, tight end Scott Orndoff, All-American guard Dorian Johnson, all-conference tackle Adam Bisnowaty, four of five defensive linemen (including Ejuan Price and Shakir Soto), three of four linebackers, and three of five defensive backs. Plus, Canada leaves Watson with nearly impossible expectations.

The Panthers are not without star power; dynamic rusher/receiver Henderson is back, as are leading receiver Jester Weah, cornerback Avonte Maddox, and, of course, 2016 Piesman Trophy winner Brian O’Neill. And if some high-profile transfers find niches, Pitt will have more than enough talent to challenge good teams.

Still, it’s going to be nearly impossible to match last year’s upside, and Pitt’s success might end up defining how we look back at 2016. Was it the year a corner was turned, or was it a year of dramatic upside and too many missed opportunities?

From a symbolism standpoint, you could do worse than this:

Narduzzi is 16-10 after two years, ranked 20th in S&P+ in his second year. He faces a third-year setback.

Mentor Mark Dantonio at Michigan State: 16-10 in his first two years, 23rd in S&P+ in year two, and 6-7 in year three.

Beginning in year four, Dantonio went 65-16 over his next six seasons.

So there’s that.

2016 in review

2016 Pitt statistical profile.

The offense was not only good; it got better against better teams. Unfortunately, the defense was demonstrably worse.

Pitt vs. S&P+ top 50 (3-5): Avg. percentile performance: 68% (80% offense, 36% defense) | Avg. yards per play: Opp 6.6, Pitt 6.5 | Avg. score: Opp 40, Pitt 36

Pitt vs. everyone else (5-0): Avg. percentile performance: 78% (60% offense, 54% defense) | Avg. yards per play: Pitt 7.0, Opp 4.9 | Avg. score: Pitt 50, Opp 28

Against top-50 competition, the offense averaged just 0.4 yards per play fewer than it did against lesser squads, but the defense allowed 1.7 yards per play more. As a result, Pitt games were virtually guaranteed shootouts; only the first and last games of the season finished with fewer than 70 combined points. Not what one would expect from either Pitt or a Narduzzi team.

The most encouraging thing I can say about Watson is that Canada hadn’t proved himself before coming to town either. In nine seasons as a coordinator, Canada had never fielded an Off. S&P+ top 20 offense, and his average finish was 51.9. His first Pitt offense was 46th before his second surged to fourth.

Watson’s track record hasn’t been sterling either. Including his time at Texas — even though he was technically QBs coach and associate head coach, he was at worst a co-coordinator in Charlie Strong’s strange arrangement — he has spent 15 years as an OC with an average Off. S&P+ ranking of 45.7. Since ranking in the top 10 in 2007-08 at Nebraska, that average has ballooned to 64.9. At Louisville, with Teddy Bridgewater at QB, he peaked at 47th in 2013.

Narduzzi and Watson worked together at Miami (Ohio) 25 years ago, and apparently the bond was a good one.

For his struggles as an OC, Watson is still regarded as a good quarterbacks coach. In Peterman’s absence, the Panthers turn to either USC grad transfer Max Browne or sophomore Ben DiNucci. Whereas Peterman averaged 15.4 yards per completion in last year’s explosive offense, Browne and DiNucci combined to average just 8.6. And creating explosiveness will be a key now that Conner, a wonderful grinder in the backfield, is gone.

Quadree Henderson

Then again, you don’t have to throw deep to Henderson for him to end up going deep. The 5’8 junior was one of the most thrilling players in the country, gaining 631 rushing yards in just 60 carries. One in five carries went for at least 20 yards, and while he lined up all over the field (he was also targeted with 42 passes), it appears he will begin as Pitt’s No. 1 receiver.

That leaves relative unknowns at running back, but there’s size and upside. Sophomore Chawntez Moss (5’11, 210) and juniors Darrin Hall (5’11, 220) and Qadree Ollison (6’2, 230) combined for 111 carries and 514 yards in 2016. That’s an average of just 4.6 yards per carry, 0.5 below Conner’s pace, but while Conner was far more explosive, this trio was actually more efficient. Plus, two incoming freshmen — Todd Sibley Jr. (5’9, 215) and A.J. Davis (6’0, 205) — are four-star prospects per the 247Sports Composite.

There’s quite a bit of potential in the backfield, and there’s even more up front. Losing Johnson and Bisnowaty hurts, but Piesman-winner O’Neill was a third-team all-conference selection, guards Alex Officer and Alex Bookser have combined for 51 career starts, and size won’t be a problem: the 10 players on the OL two-deep average 6’5, 319. Combined with the bigger backs, that’s quite a bit of meat.

Brian O'Neill

The receiving corps could be a thrill as long as Weah and Henderson don’t get hurt.

Weah’s return gives the Panthers one sure big-play threat. He was one of the nation’s most underrated receivers, combining a 24.2 yards-per-catch average with a 51 percent success rate. He caught fewer than three passes per game but still nearly finished with 900 receiving yards. Henderson was a nice possession option near the line of scrimmage. The tight end position, meanwhile, has quite a bit of potential as well between four-star sophomore Chris Clark, senior Devon Edwards, Rutgers transfer Matt Flanagan, and incoming four-star Charles Reeves Jr.

Size isn’t an issue here either. Weah is 6’3, backup sophomore Aaron Mathews 6’4, and Reeves is listed at a whopping 6’5, 280.

A single injury could be devastating, though. After Weah and Henderson, Mathews, sophomore Maurice Ffrench, and junior Rafael Araujo-Lopes combined for just nine catches last year.

Defense

The offense has potential, but there’s almost nowhere to go but down. That means the defense will have to pick up the slack. Easier said than done.

A Narduzzi defense is nothing if not aggressive. He is willing to give up big plays in the name of making some. He wants to force college players to make plays college players typically can’t, and that’s great as long as he has the personnel. But his first two Pitt defenses ranked just 50th and 62nd in Def. S&P+. Last year’s Panthers made plays up front but gave up too many big plays; meanwhile, the pass defense was strangely conservative (and still gave up too many big plays).

Pitt allowed 213 gains of 10-plus yards (120th in FBS) and 24 of 40-plus (121st). And that was with Price and Soto up front. That duo combined for 33 tackles for loss and 17.5 sacks, and of the nine players to record at least 4.5 TFLs last season, six are gone.

Rori Blair

The end position still has plenty of potential. Rori Blair and Allen Edwards combined for seven TFLs as complementary pieces, and four-star Tennessee transfer Dewayne Hendrix had a good enough spring to be listed as a starter. But there’s a massive void at DT, where the three leading tacklers are gone.

Shane Roy and Amir Watts combined for 6 tackles, and that’s the extent of your experience in the middle. Big things are expected of four-star redshirt freshman Keyshon Camp, but he’s still a redshirt freshman. There’s still plenty of size here, thanks to players like junior Mike Herndon (6’4, 315) and incoming freshman Jalen Twyman (6’2, 315), but there are no proven pieces.

There aren’t many at linebacker either; junior Oluwaseun Idowu is the only of last year’s top four tacklers to return, though senior Quintin Wirginis and sophomore Saleem Brightwell showed some potential in backup roles.

Avonte Maddox

Last year, opponents had to be wary of the run defense and took to the air. They ran just 49 percent of the time on standard downs (123rd in FBS) and 24 percent on passing downs (126th), a sign that there wasn’t much fear of the secondary. Maddox took advantage of the extra attention, combining for 8.5 TFLs and 11 passes defensed, but opponents still completed 64 percent of their passes with a 143.6 passer rating. Pitt basically turned every quarterback into Washington State’s Luke Falk (145.6).

Opposite Maddox will be some combination of sophomores Dane Jackson, Damar Hamllin, and Malik Henderson, junior Phillipie Motley, and redshirt freshman Therran Coleman. Blue-chip freshman Paris Ford could help, but he needs to secure his eligibility first.

Safety was less of an issue last year, but it remains unsure. Free safety Jordan Whitehead returns, and junior Dennis Briggs had 2.5 TFLs and a breakup and might be a play-maker. But once again, if someone gets hurt, there’s almost nothing proven after them.

Special Teams

Chris Blewitt made the biggest field goal of his life against Clemson but still left something to be desired from a consistency standpoint. Pitt ranked just 85th in field goal efficiency, and while punter Ryan Winslow’s leg was strong (42.6 average), the Panthers ranked just 103rd in punt efficiency because of an eight-yard return average.

When you grade poorly in those, you’re going to grade poorly in Special Teams S&P+. Pitt ranked 81st, losing about 0.4 points per game, despite Henderson’s superhuman averages (30.5 yards per kick return, 15.8 yards per punt return, four combined touchdowns). Winslow is back, but Blewitt is replaceable, and Pitt isn’t likely to fall further here.

Ten years ago, Pitt pulled one of its biggest upsets ever, when a team that had lost seven of its last nine games went to Morgantown and took down No. 2 West Virginia, 13-9.

It was the biggest possible rivalry move — we can’t make anything of our season, but we’re going to destroy yours — and it was a springboard. Pitt went 19-7 over the next two seasons, their best two-year win total since 1981-82.

It’s hard to imagine that happening again following last year’s PSU and Clemson wins. The Panthers just have too much to replace. And that’s fine — sometimes it takes a while to get your classes balanced, and Narduzzi’s mentor experienced a third-year blip before he got rolling at Michigan State.

But as with UNC, newfound normalcy will be tested by a 2017 blip. If Pitt manages a top-40 performance and wins seven or eight games, that could set up a nice run in 2018 and beyond. This team doesn’t have many seniors, after all.

In the increasingly talented ACC, a top-40 performance could take on a lot of looks in the win column. S&P+ projects Pitt 33rd, which means three likely wins (Youngstown State, Rice, Virginia), one likely loss (at Penn State), and a whopping eight relative tossups with win probability between 37 and 59 percent. Pitt has played 14 one-possession games in two years; unless the Panthers fall further than expected, that average probably won’t go down.

That means 4-8 and 10-2 are technically on the table, depending on the bounces that eluded the Panthers for so many years.
