Ok I gotta ask, what are your thoughts on all this speculation and worry that they’ll be broken up come season 4? HAPPY THOUGHTS ONLY!!
"happy thoughts only" anon you have come to the right place!! since a few hours after i finished the season, I've been rainbows and sunshine about the potential of season 4.
I'm gonna say something maybe mildly controversial: I'm actually glad they left jiara open ended in the 18 month time jump. I would have liked to see more in the rest of episode 10, but I wouldn't have changed anything about the time jump scene in relation to Jiara.
The thing about the Pates is that they like to write themselves into corners. With Sarah and John B's "death" in s1 and the pogues getting stranded on an island in s2, they usually have to write themselves out of the last season before they get started with the plot of the next season - and there's usually a little bit of a wacky plot line to go along with it. I don't see the blackbeard thing as a corner - they can do anything with that small, small snippet of information we've gotten.
And similarly, they can do anything they want with Jiara in season 4. Are they together? are they broken up? have they not talked about it? are they just not into PDA? It could be any of those things, or a million others, and the writers aren't tied to any of those plot lines. they can pick and choose whatever feels the most natural, and I think that will save us from some wacky story line that we won't like, if that makes any sense?
and i'll be so honest, I'm an easy girl to please (I say as I critique literally everything the pates do down to how they breath) and I think there's a lot of ways that the pates' own blind spots can work for us here. Remember in s2 when there was a month long jump in the banks that was equivalent to 2 days in Jarah B time??? if there's an 18 month time jump in banks time that is, like, a week in Jiara time, I'm seated. If they're fwb who are about to make the distinction between "i love you" and "i'm in love with you", I'm seated. If they've been dating this entire time and they're happy but not into PDA, and Luke coming back starts some external pressure that they work through, I'm seated.
i know this is blindly hopeful. I know. but it's honestly how I feel!! and maybe tomorrow i'll be doom-and-gloom, but as of now, i'm looking through rose-tinted glasses.
and at the end of the day, I just come back to this:
Tumblr media
maybe i'm silly but I'm not worried!!!!

the previous anon’s message made me think about the pogues’ signs and this is what i came up with:
johnb — leo
pope — capricorn
jj — aries
kiara — aquarius
sarah — gemini
i have a fair bit of knowledge of astrology but obviously this is just my opinion 😆
okay I'm a bit late replying to this but according to the Pogue Life book Sarah is a Sagittarius, John B's a Leo, Kie's an Aquarius, Pope is a Virgo, and JJ is an Aries, so you got 3 outta 5 :)

Between The Lines
Tumblr media
Summary-> It's the little things that go on behind the scenes between you and Drew that makes your chemistry electric.
Belongs to my: OBX Season 5: Payback for Maybank Series
These can be read in any order!
Tumblr media
"Park place." Maddison narrates where Drew lands his dog piece across the monopoly board. "I'll buy it." He says but your hand is in his face, "Not so fast. I'm sure you would love to buy it if I didn't already have a hotel on it. You owe me $1500. Pay up." You show him your open palm, ready for lots and lots of cash.
"He's so cooked. Look at that pathetic stack of cash Drew has. I've got piggy banks with more than that." Jonathan's comments send the four of you erupting into a fit of laughter which eventually dies down to a patient silence. "Sometime today would be great." Madison clears her throat.
"Josh is coming!" Drew points, appealing to your gullibility and you all fell for it. By the time you realized he was bluffing, the board was tossed and the pieces were all out of place. He gets up and runs off as if he already knew you'd be hot on his heels.
Your outburts left JD and Madison alone to pick up the pieces, but not without an interesting conversation. "50 bucks they're together by the time we finish the season." Madison says it so casually as she reaches underneath the couch for the pieces.
"So I'm not crazy? You see it too?" He looks almost relieved. "Trust me, I've got a knack for these things." JD seems skeptical about the timeline of the bet. "I dunno, we finish filming in four months. That might be too soon, I say by the premiere."
The both of them look up to Carlacia who seemed to have been streaming live on her istagram. She enters the room mumbling something about getting winded by you and Drew sprinting past her.
Madison scoffs, "That's like nine months from now. They could get together and break up by then, but you know what-- If that's what you wanna bet, then be my guest." She holds out her hand and JD shakes on it. "You're on."
"We're ready for you guys." One of the assistants notifys them that it was time to head to the screening room where the weekly table reads were held.
Today would be your first look at the script for the second episode, and to say you were shocked was an understatement.
Script Summary:
Eventually the pogues put their trust in Piper and she gives them a fair exchange of some arms that they can handle, while she opts for her weapon of choice, a steel pipe.
"How do you think I got the name and the scar?" She says and it puts an odd sense of comfort among the group, minus a skeptical Rafe, to know you were confident enough in your skills that you didn't need a gun.
They beleived they were in good hands, until they realized they weren't. There was movement coming from the bushes and it made the pogues stand on guard, beckoning them to come out. Soon, the figures finally revealed themsleves. More mercenaries.
"Nicely, done Piper. It seems you can still make yourself useful after all." The red-headed woman speaks up, tossing you a pouch of money that you caught with one hand effortlessly.
"Never doubt my capabilities, it's insulting." You warn, tucking the pouch into the bag strapped across your back. The british woman continues, "Y'know, Mr. Finch could use your talents again. Once we're done tying up loose ends, we're headed back to home base in Lisbon."
Rafe is livid. He knew he couldn't trust you. It couldn't be by pure coincidence that the mercenaries popped up in the middle of this oasis when you were leading. "Lisbon? You told us Finch was here-" Kiara exclaims and Rafe interrupts.
"It was all a lie, from the very beginning. Mr. Alami, the merchant from Agapenta, he was working with you, wasn't he? You knew he'd send us to you, and now you got your sad little payout from these dipshits for bringing us to them." Rafe seethes.
"I'll neither confirm nor deny that claim, love the enthusiasm though." Your attitude remains unbothered throughout the ordeal until Pope demands, "What do you want from us? We don't have the crown! Groff took it." The red head shrugs casually, sharpening her blades as she approaches the group.
"Don't you worry, Groff will get what's coming to him. For now, it's time to repay the debt that is owed. You get blood on your hands, I get blood on mine." Your eyes bulge, "Hang on, you never said you wanted to kill them." You step in and the woman pays you no mind.
"Perhaps because It's none of your concern. You've got your cut, now's a good time as ever to leave. It's about to get messy." She retracts her hand, about to plunge the blade into Pope when she's knocked out cold by a flying piece of steel.
The group looks over to you in shock, fear, and a hint of gratitude, but there's no time to gush about it when there's suddenly a brawl that breaks out between the mercenaries and the pogues.
You all hardly take them out before escaping.
"Piper, what the hell?!" John B yells and his anger is heavily agreed on in the group, you take it on the chin before offering the most sincere apology you could come up with. They're unconvinced. "I deserve that. Everything you heard back there is true. Finch's Fortress is in Lisbon. If you find him, you'll find Groff," You trail off, reaching into your bag, handing Cleo the pouch of money you'd just gotten.
"Take this. It's more than enough to get you a boat big enough to get across the atlantic and even have some leftover for food for a few days. When you arrive on the coast of Cascais, you'll need to head north in-land."
There's silence.
A long silence, nervous glances between the pogues and Rafe's eyes roll. "You guys cannot seriously be considering trusting her. She almost had us killed! Am I the only one who cares about making it back home?"
"Just shut up, Rafe!" John B silences him, and Pope speaks up. "Listen, I don't know about you guys but Piper just saved my life when she didn't have to. We've already lost someone. Going after Groff could be a suicide missison for all we know. But we all know this isn't about our safety, it's about revenge. For JJ." His speech is moving, the expressions agree.
"For JJ." They all agree.
"To Lisbon we go." Cleo chimes, and the group moves on.
End of Script*
You had just finished reading the script and you were blown away. The cast never knows what to expect whenevfer a new script is dropped in front of them.
"Wait a minute... If the pogues are going to Lisbon in the next episode then," Madison trails off and the director ties in, "So are we. Pack your bags, flights are booked for Saturday morning at 5am, please do not miss these flights, we're not opposed to writing you out!" Josh jokes and there's excited and shock all around the table.
You knew that the last season of the show had implied that the pogues would be on their way to Lisbon but it never dawned on you that it would be so soon, even though it made sense.
"You ever been to Portugal?" Drew leans in, a soft whisper in your ear tickled your skin and made the hairs on the back of your neck at attention. "Never, have you?" He thinks about it, "If a layover counts then yes, yes I have." You're not sure if the joke was funny or if it just left the mouth of an incredibly attractive man, nonetheless, it made you giggle.
Madison kicks JD from under the table, jutting her chin towards the two of you giggling in secret and he rolls his eyes. "Patience." He says it calmly, but Madison is impatient, she knows she'll reign triumphant by the end of it all.
-
It’s a Friday night—or, more accurately, the early hours of Saturday morning. The world outside your accommodations complex is still cloaked in sleep, and you should be too. But no. The responsibility of making your flight in two hours has ripped you from the warmth of your bed. Groggy but determined, you scrambled to gather your belongings, knowing you wouldn’t be back.
After a last sweep of the room, you opened the door with a flicker of confidence—only to jump at the sight of a six-foot-two figure standing in your doorway.
“Drew! Oh my god, you scared me.” Your hand flew to your chest in a theatrical gesture, your pulse thrumming in your ears.
A small smile tugged at his lips, his eyes crinkling slightly. “Sorry. Just wanted to make sure you were actually up. Everyone else already left. There’s one driver still waiting downstairs.” His voice was smooth, annoyingly easy to listen to this early in the morning. Too easy.
“You sound oddly refreshed for 3 a.m.,” you quipped, your own voice still husky from sleep as you grabbed your suitcase.
“That’s the beauty of insomnia.” He shrugged, gesturing to his temples with a finger like it was some kind of genius life hack. “You can’t wake up tired if you never really sleep.”
The elevator dinged open, and the two of you stepped inside. The silence that settled was heavy, charged with something you couldn’t quite define. It hung there until you both spoke at once:
“So where are you—” “How did you—”
You broke into quiet laughter, and Drew’s mouth twitched with amusement. “You first,” he said, giving you a slight nod.
“How did you know I hadn’t already left with the others?” you asked, tilting your head curiously. For a moment, something flickered across his face—an emotion too quick to name—before a light blush dusted his cheeks. He masked it with an easy tone.
“I did some askin' around,” he replied, the answer short and almost vague. It was just enough to spark your teasing instincts.
“Ah,” you said with a smirk, “so you missed me?”
Instant regret settled within you. The elevator seemed too small, too still as Drew turned to look at you, his gaze steady and disarming. For a heartbeat, he didn’t respond, and your cheeks grew warm under his stare.
“You could say that,” he finally said, the ghost of a smirk curling the corner of his lips. His attention shifted to the elevator doors as they slid open, leaving you to wonder if you’d imagined the whole thing.
The ride to the airport was longer than expected thanks to roadwork that forced a detour. You should've been annoyed, but at some point, your head found its way to Drew’s shoulder, and your eyes fluttered shut. The fabric of his hoodie was soft against your temple, and his warmth lulled you into a half-dream state.
Drew didn’t dare move. The weight of your head against him was almost too perfect, and he fought the sudden urge to reach for your hand resting on your lap. Instead, he focused on the ticking clock in the back of his mind and the quiet hum of the car.
When you arrived, he sprang into action. “C’mon, we don’t have time to waste,” he murmured, grabbing your suitcase and his carry-on in one hand while ushering you toward the terminal with the other.
You barely had to lift a finger. Drew handled everything—tickets, baggage check, even navigating customs—with practiced efficiency, his jaw set and his movements quick. He wasn’t just organized; he was determined.
“Do you always walk as fast as a drill sergeant?” you teased as you reached the gate, breathing a little easier now.
He shot you a look, his lips twitching. “I'm not a huge fan of being late,” was all he said. But the way his eyes lingered on yours for half a second longer than necessary told you there was more to it than that.
Finally, you made it to your seats in first class. You settled across the aisle from Madelyn, who flashed you a bright smile.
“I was starting to think you two wouldn’t make it,” she teased, leaning toward you with a glint in her eye. There was an underlying subtext to her words but you were too tired to decipher it.
“Drew made sure that didn’t happen,” you replied with a soft laugh. The words were simple, but they carried a warmth you couldn’t quite suppress.
From behind your seat, Drew caught the sound of his name on your lips--and god did he love the way it sounds. He didn’t know what you’d said, but it didn’t matter. The fact that you were talking about him stirred something in his chest.
As the flight began, you glanced back once, meeting his gaze. He held it for a fraction of a moment before looking away, his expression unreadable.
And yet, for the rest of the flight, he couldn’t stop thinking about you. Couldn’t stop replaying the memory of the weight of your head on his shoulder—or wondering what it might feel like to hold your hand in his.

Addressing the OBX drama and the speculations:
Was JJ’s Death planned?
No, Rudy asked to leave the show. It wasn’t something the writers planned. He didn’t want to renew, the writers were rightfully upset and then decided to kill JJ off.
Did the writers/producers create an uncomfortable set?
Tumblr media
No, they didn’t. This post is not true. The brothers were never inappropriate.
Was Madison a bully on set?
I’ve seen a post going around of someone saying Madison was a bully, controlling the set, and bluntly treating Rudy and crew members like crap. That is NOT true.
Was Rudy’s decision sudden?
Yes and No. No as in he let the Pates know ahead of time he didn’t want to continue (some time during the strike, so they had time to change what was already written). Yes, as in they were shocked by it.
Was there on set drama between Rudy and the Pates?
Yes, there was many disagreements/personal problems during s4. Yes, Elaine was involved and so was Lilah Pate. They are civil now.
Why did every ship but Jiara get a still?
The jiara still does exist but idk why it was not released. My source doesn’t know either and I don’t want to spread something not true. Rudy and Madison took pictures just like everybody else did.
Why did the cast chemistry seem off in part 2?
They shot episodes 1-5 first, THEN 10, then 6-9. The cast didn’t know rudy asked to leave until they received the script for episode 10. You can tell there was a drastic change between JJ and Kiara in part 2 because after the cast found out, Madison was upset with Rudy and his decision, so she didn’t put in as much effort into the scenes with him. She was upset because she knew that would mean the near end of obx and her character… in a way.
Was there alternate endings?
Yes, but that was only because they wanted to see if rudy would change his mind. There was even scenes where a funeral was shot (obviously they didn’t air it so I’m assuming they’re saving it for s5). From March-June of 2024, they spent the entire time doing reshoots of some scenes. That is why some things don’t make sense.
Did Rudy and Madison talk on set?
Yes, but not closely or anything. They’re not friends, they just did the scenes they had to do and that was it. All those people saying they’re hiding their friendship from the cameras or whatever… that is not true sorry. The pates can’t force them to act like best friends as long as they were doing their scenes.
Why did Jiara have “less” than everybody else?
It’s true that Jiara scenes were toned down. Part of it was Rudy asking for it. Madison didn’t care as much. Another part was just Rudy and Madison not doing more than what the script asked.
Was Elaine uncomfortable with Jiara scenes?
Yes, and she has been since s2. It got worse during s3 and obviously s4. That was part of the conflict.
What is the Rudy and Madison Drama?
Obviously what happened between them is private. It wasn’t the fans. The fans were more so the catalyst to something that had been brewing.
It is true that the girlfriends are involved and that they weren’t happy. Madison hurt Rudy, but not by being a bully. It was emotionally. The feeling was then returned on his end and it just got worse from there. It didn’t help when the girlfriends and fans were involved. It is true that it’s not a coincidence this happened when they both got involved with relationships. Most of you have speculated correctly, that is all I will say. I think you know by now what I’m trying to say.
Also when I say fans, I don’t mean the “shipping.” They never cared about that. What I do mean is that all this drama happened when Jiara fans were at their peak. Them wanting to see those characters together put Rudy and Madison in a problematic situation because they knew they couldn’t avoid each other on screen. Instead they just did so off screen.
Should the Writers/ Directors/ Producers stepped in?
Yes, but what I need you guys to understand is that these writers were basically father figures to those actors. They watched them grow their careers, supported them, made them who they are now. It’s hard when you spent so much time with each other and became a genuine family. Even their conflict with Elaine was hard because Jonas knew her family, his wife treated her like a daughter, and lilah treated her like a sister. They had every right to be bitter because from their POV, it’s basically like “hey I trusted you to bring my project to life and now I’m being forced to go in a direction I never wanted to go in.”
What’s going on behind the scenes right now?
A mess. They knew it would be bad but infact it is worse and they know that.
Am I reliable?
Honestly I don’t care if you believe me or not. You didn’t before and I got attacked (literal death threats in my inbox). I’m just a messenger. I’ve given you info before and clearly I didn’t lie about it. It’s up to you to decide.

warning: mentions of disordered eating/extreme weight loss, proceed with caution and remember that food is fuel !!!
Y/n sat out on the covered porch, a book in her lap and Charleston curled at her feet. The sunlight of the early morning peaked through the windows, the aroma of coffee filling the air. Drew sat opposite her, sprawled out on the sofa, his long legs dangling off the edge. His glasses perched on his nose in a way that always made y/n’s head spin as he flipped through a script. This quiet comfort was the usual way they began their day, climbing out of bed and making coffee before soaking in the tranquility of the morning.
“I’m gonna grab some breakfast, what do you want?” Y/n asked, closing her book and getting up with a groan. Drew looked up from his script, his sunken eyes raking over the way the light shone off y/n’s skin.
“I’ve got coffee, I’m alright.” Drew said, flashing a small grin before returning back to his script. Y/n sighed, placing her hands on her hips. He had been preparing for his new project, a Luca Guadagnino picture alongside Daniel Craig that supposedly “required” him to slim down. Drew was already a naturally lanky guy, often building on muscle for OBX, so the idea of losing even more weight seemed insane to y/n, but Drew insisted. She appreciated his commitment and ability to go “all in”, but as he began to lose more and more weight it seemed to be overkill.
“Drew.” Y/n said sharply, glaring harshly at Drew.
“Y/n.” Drew said back, mocking her tone playfully as he looked back up at her.
“What do you want for breakfast?” Y/n repeated, quirking one of her eyebrows. Drew sighed, placing the script down before sitting up and moving to face her. Y/n took a step forward, standing between Drew’s legs and grabbing onto his hands.
“I’m alright, baby. I promise.” Drew whispered, placing a kiss to y/n’s knuckles. As y/n looked down at him, she felt her stomach swirl at his sunken features and the way he was practically swimming in clothes that used to fit him like a glove.
“Drew, please.” Y/n said quietly, her eyes beginning to prickle with tears. As much as she tried to mask her fear as worry, she could feel herself begin to slip. The fact of the matter was that she was utterly terrified. Terrified of the way Drew was pushing himself, going so far just for some stupid, goddamn project. The boy she had fallen in love with, the curves and angles she knew like the back of her hand sinking into something almost unrecognizable as Drew lost more and more weight.
“Baby, hey, don’t do that.” Drew went to stand, his footing stumbling and body swaying for a moment before y/n forced him back onto the couch with a sob. It had become a more and more common occurrence, the bouts of dizziness or shortness of breath that made y/n’s heart break each time.
“Hey, I just got up too fast I’m—” Drew rambled.
“No, Drew, goddamnit!” Y/n shouted, ripping her hands out of Drew’s grip and wiping her eyes harshly. Drew’s eyes widened before hesitantly wrapping his hands around y/n’s torso, his touch featherlight. Y/n wasn’t one to raise her voice often, especially not at him, but the anger in her voice was glaringly apparent.
“I’m fucking tired of this, Drew! It’s ridiculous and—” y/n sobbed, “you’re scaring me. You look sick, Drew.”
Drew sighed, closing his eyes and resting his head on y/n’s stomach. She continued to cry, her body shaking as tears streamed down her cheeks in a way that made Drew feel nauseous. He smoothed his hands along her back, gently tracing the contours of her hips.
“This isn’t healthy.” Y/n whispered. Drew lifted his head to meet her glassy eyes, the fear and worry staining her face. He hated seeing her like this, the hurt on her features acting like a stab to the heart.
“Ok, ok.” Drew muttered, taking y/n’s hands gently as he nodded to himself. Sure, he had been in touch with a nutritionist and maybe he had been… neglecting some of their warnings and recommendations, but he knew this role was going to be big. He wanted to do this right. He wanted to prove to himself and others that he could do it, but was it worth the risks? Hell, was it worth the pain he was causing y/n? Certainly not. Nothing could ever excuse the anguish he was causing her, anguish he would kill anyone else if they were causing her.
“I’ll… slow down, okay?” Drew said, his thumb tracing along y/n’s knuckles gently. Y/n closed her eyes before pressing a kiss to the top of Drew’s head.
“Thank you.” She whispered, wrapping her arms around his shoulders. Drew’s arms snaked around her, pulling her flush to his chest as he stood again. He inhaled deeply, his hands curling into the t-shirt of his that hung off y/n’s body. He never thought he’d feel this way about someone else. Feeling so fiercely protective of and willing to do anything to avoid seeing them in pain. Feeling so in love that he’d do anything, anything, to see them happy… but here he was on the porch of their shared home, holding onto y/n so tightly as if he could lose her at any second.
“I love you, baby. I’m sorry I scared you.” Drew said gently, his fingers tracing lightly along the curve of y/n’s back.
“I love you, Drew. Please don’t scare me like that again.” Y/n said into the front of Drew’s shirt, her grip on his torso tightening. The two of them stood in the soft morning light for a moment, holding onto each other so tightly it was impossible to discern where y/n ended and Drew began.
“How about Claire’s, hm?” Drew said into y/n’s hair. Her grip on him loosened slightly, allowing her space to look up at him, her lips curling into a wide grin.
“That sounds good.” Y/n whispered, reaching up onto her tiptoes to press a kiss to the curve of Drew’s jaw.

I get that you get it but also: even when killing jj off they could have done it in a more realistic way in context of how outer banks was written in total. They switched character traits so many times, it's frustrating. And I don't mean JJ being impulsive or making bad decisions but still being loyal. That IS JJ being in Character. The problem is the writers inttroducing 373378 plotlines that all lead to nothing.
The JJ that broke into the girl's camp to save kiara? He exists in s4 part 1, but he gets killed soooon after that before jj's death.
The fact that JJ's dad isn't his real that? Yeah there is kind of totally no point of that, we just needed it to be tragic that his own dad is the one who kills him but it does not actually give any value to the story.
Jj then becoming whatever he thought his then fake dad was - a violent alcoholic with no self control - made sense to some amount but NOT the way it was shown here. Him losing it because even THOUGH this bad man was not his father, his real dad is actually even worse? So he truly feels like the worst? Yeah that part makes sense. But he has more skill and logical thinking especially in crisis, we saw that the past seasons, they just reduced him to a pathetic representation. It just seems off in a writing way yk?
The pogues burying (is that how you spell it??) Jj in the middle of nowhere without anything selfmade to mark the grave while the entire town didn't know shit about his legacy and stuff instead of burning him to bring his ashes back home ?
Kiara's father and THE SHERRIF out of all people helping them instead of actually putting the irony of what the sherrif said to jj into this chapter of the story?
That is lazy writing. The rhythm is SO fucking OFF in this season. Only in the 2nd part, I think, which makes rhe entire season even more fucked up in total cuz these two parts are so odd compared to each other.
My problem is NOT that jj is killed off or that rudy wanted to leave the show - i respect that and we are in NO place to say anything about that - but seriously? You can TELL he was not supposed to die in this season. They just wrote his death in one season early, and in the worst way possible.
Just let the man die doing something impulsive. Or protecting his friends while slightly overreacting. Give us actual devastation and not whatever this entire scene was.
obx spoilers ahead!!
I'm so conflicted about the season 4 ending because on one hand I get it. life is unfair, it's unrealistic to give all of your characters happy endings, especially if said characters are constantly putting themselves in danger. it makes sense that not everyone survives four seasons of near-death experiences like being held hostage, getting shot at, almost drowning etc. on the other hand I can't help but be bitter that the person who had been abused/mistreated their entire life and who was clearly suffering was the one who had to die. at the hands of his biological father, may I add. I’ve seen some people say JJ was annoying this season and I get where they’re coming from, but all of his impulsive decisions and everything that happened at/after the town meeting just made me sad. he was struggling so much that he didn’t care what happened to him or if he lived or died. all he wanted was a future where he could live with his friends in their own little paradise without a care in the world. with the money from the crown and shoupe’s promise, it seemed like he was so close to happiness and inner peace, but they didn’t let him have that. so yeah, I get why they did this, but that doesn’t make it less upsetting.

All Of The Girls You Loved Before (j.b)
Tumblr media
Summary: being long distance in a high profile relationship definitely has its downsides
AN: this is in the same universe as my other Joe Burrow fic! Maybe I’ll write more for the obx actress!reader x Joe Burrow
Y/N shifted on the couch, her script spread across her lap, but her mind wasn’t on the scene. It hadn’t been all day. She reread the same line three times before groaning and tossing the script aside. The tension with Joe had consumed her thoughts since their fight.
Their phone calls had been strained lately, and she had chalked it up to the Bengals' rough season. Joe didn’t talk much about his struggles, but she could sense them in his clipped tone and the way he avoided certain questions. She’d known dating an NFL quarterback would come with unique challenges, but she hadn’t anticipated how isolating it would feel when he withdrew.
The fight two nights ago still stung.
They had started the call with light conversation, her asking about practice and him asking about her day on set. But as usual, his mood shifted.
“Another tough day?” she asked gently when he grew quiet.
“Something like that,” Joe muttered.
“Want to talk about it?”
“No, not really.”
The curt response stung, but she tried to push through. “Joe, you know you can tell me anything, right? I want to be here for you.”
“I said I don’t want to talk about it, Y/N,” he snapped.
She blinked, caught off guard. His tone was sharp, harsher than she’d ever heard from him before.
“Okay,” she said, her voice carefully measured. “But you can’t keep shutting me out. If you’re frustrated, don’t take it out on me.”
Joe let out a frustrated breath. “I’m not taking it out on you. Why do you always think everything’s about you?”
The words hit like a slap.
“Excuse me?” she said, her voice rising.
“You heard me,” Joe replied, his tone defensive now. “I’m allowed to have a bad day without you making it worse.”
She stood up, pacing her small living room as she gripped the phone tighter. “Making it worse? Are you serious right now? Joe, I’ve been nothing but supportive, but I’m not going to sit here and let you treat me like I’m part of the problem!”
“I’m not treating you like anything!”
“Yes, you are!” she shouted. “And you know what? Maybe I’ll stop asking how you’re doing. Maybe I’ll stop caring, since it’s so damn inconvenient for you.”
Joe went silent for a moment. “You’re being dramatic.”
“Yeah, well, maybe I have a right to be! Call me back when you’re ready to act like a grown-up.”
She hung up before he could respond, her chest heaving.
Now, days later, she replayed the fight over and over. Was she dramatic? She didn’t think so. She had only wanted to help, to understand what he was going through. But the way he spoke to her… it wasn’t okay.
Her phone buzzed on the table, and her heart jumped. It wasn’t Joe. Just her friend Madelyn texting about plans for the weekend. Y/N sighed, her chest tightening with disappointment.
She missed him. Despite everything, she missed the way he made her laugh when they were together, the way he’d send her silly memes in the middle of the day, the way he’d whisper ‘goodnight, gorgeous’ before falling asleep on the phone with her.
But she wasn’t going to chase after him. He needed to meet her halfway.
As she stared at her phone, willing it to light up with his name, she wondered if their relationship could weather the storm they were in—or if it was already too late.
||
Y/N sat curled up on the couch in her trailer, a blanket draped over her legs. Filming had wrapped earlier than usual, and instead of heading out with her Outer Banks castmates for dinner, she had opted to spend the evening alone. She had barely spoken to Joe since their argument, and the weight of their silence was beginning to feel unbearable.
She opened Instagram to distract herself, scrolling mindlessly through her feed. Fan accounts, cast photos, and behind-the-scenes snapshots blurred together until her thumb froze over a post.
A drama account she didn’t even follow had posted a photo of Joe standing outside a restaurant.
Her breath hitched as she processed the image. There he was, unmistakably Joe, in his signature black hoodie and jeans. Next to him stood his ex-girlfriend. The caption read:
Spotted: Joe Burrow reconnecting with his ex outside a Cincinnati hotspot. Old flames reigniting?
Y/N’s stomach dropped.
The photo wasn’t damning in itself—Joe was standing a few feet away from his ex, his hands shoved into his hoodie pocket, his posture casual. But the sight of them together, even in such a neutral context, was enough to ignite the insecurities she had been suppressing since the beginning of their relationship.
Joe’s ex had been part of his life during a time when everything seemed to be falling into place for him—his Heisman-winning season at LSU, his rise to fame, his transition to the NFL. Y/N had always felt like a footnote in comparison to someone who had been there for the “glory days.”
She opened the comments, against her better judgment.
They look so good together.
I knew it! He and Y/N didn’t seem like a good match.
Y/N could never compare to her.
Her heart twisted painfully as she locked her phone and set it down beside her. For a moment, she tried to rationalize it. Maybe it wasn’t what it looked like. Maybe it was just a coincidence. Maybe—
Her thoughts spiraled as doubt crept in. Joe hadn’t called her since their fight. He hadn’t tried to make amends or even check in. What if he had gone to his ex for comfort? What if he missed the simplicity of a relationship that wasn’t long-distance and riddled with the challenges of their demanding careers?
She picked up her phone again, staring at his contact name.
“Just call him,” she muttered to herself.
But she didn’t.
Y/N hated how the fight had left things between them. She hated how the silence had stretched into days. But most of all, she hated how vulnerable the photo made her feel. This wasn’t her—jealousy wasn’t an emotion she wore well. She prided herself on being confident and independent, on trusting Joe and the bond they had built.
Still, the photo lingered in her mind like an itch she couldn’t scratch. Every time she closed her eyes, she saw them together, and the doubts whispered louder.
She poured herself a glass of wine and sank deeper into the couch, replaying the past six months in her mind. Joe had never given her a reason to doubt him before. He was loyal and grounded, far from the egotistical superstar he could easily have become. But the distance between them—and the way he had pulled away after their fight—left her questioning everything.
Hours passed, and by the time Y/N went to bed, her resolve was firm.
If Joe wanted to explain himself, he’d have to be the one to reach out.
||
Y/N was sitting at her kitchen counter, sipping her second cup of coffee and scrolling aimlessly through her phone, when it buzzed. The name on the screen sent her heart lurching: Joe.
For a moment, she stared at it, debating whether to answer. She wasn’t sure if she was ready to hear what he had to say—or if she wanted to. But the call persisted, and with a deep breath, she swiped to answer.
“Hey,” she said, her voice cool, but betraying a tinge of nerves.
“Hey,” Joe replied softly. His tone was different, gentler, like he knew he had some explaining to do.
An awkward silence stretched between them. Y/N didn’t know whether to start or let him speak first. She tapped her fingers against the countertop, waiting.
“I, uh, I figured you might’ve seen that photo,” Joe finally said, breaking the silence.
“Yeah, I saw it,” she replied tersely. “Kind of hard to avoid it when I’m being tagged in the comments every 30 seconds.”
Joe sighed. “I need you to know that whoever took that picture posted it without any context.”
“Okay,” she said cautiously. “Then give me the context.”
He hesitated for a moment, and she could hear him take a breath. “I was leaving a restaurant with Ja’Marr. We’d grabbed dinner after practice. As we were walking out, I ran into her. She was coming in. We said hi, and that was it.”
“That was it?”
“Yeah. That was it. I didn’t even stay to talk—I left right after.”
Y/N leaned back against her chair, her mind working through his words. The explanation made sense, and Joe didn’t sound defensive or evasive. But the sight of the photo had opened a wound she didn’t know was still there.
“Why didn’t you tell me?” she asked softly after a moment.
“I thought about it,” Joe admitted. “But after our fight, I didn’t want to make things worse. I figured we needed some space, and I didn’t think it was a big deal.”
“It is a big deal, Joe,” she said, her voice trembling slightly. “She’s the one person I’ve always been insecure about. And then I see a picture of you with her, and you don’t even think to give me a heads-up?”
“I get it,” Joe said quickly. “I should’ve told you. I didn’t mean to make you feel like that. I was just trying to give you space.”
“Well, it didn’t help,” Y/N said bluntly, though her voice had softened.
“I’m sorry,” he said, his voice earnest. “I swear to you, there’s nothing there. You’re the only one I want to be with, Y/N. You have to believe that.”
She sighed, the tension in her shoulders easing slightly. “I do believe you. I just… I don’t like how things have been between us lately. We barely talk anymore, and when we do, it’s like you’re a million miles away.”
“I know,” Joe said, his tone heavy with regret. “I’ve been caught up in my own head, and that’s not fair to you. You’ve been nothing but patient with me, and I’ve taken that for granted. I’m sorry, Y/N. For everything.”
His words melted away the last of her defenses. She missed him, missed the warmth in his voice when they talked, missed the way he made her feel like the only person in the world who mattered.
“I missed you,” she admitted softly.
“I missed you too,” Joe said, his voice tender. “So much. I hate how things have been between us. Can we fix this? I don’t want to lose you.”
“You won’t lose me,” she assured him, a small smile creeping onto her face. “But you have to promise me one thing.”
“Anything,” he said quickly.
“No more shutting me out. Even when things are tough, I need you to let me in.”
“I promise,” he said without hesitation. “I’ll do better, Y/N. I mean it.”
For the first time in days, Y/N felt a weight lift off her chest. Things weren’t perfect, but they were talking, and that was a start.
“Good,” she said, her voice lightening. “Because I’m not going anywhere, Joe.”
“Neither am I,” he said. “And I’m going to make it up to you. Just wait and see.”
As they ended the call, Y/N felt a spark of hope. Their relationship wasn’t perfect, but neither of them wanted to give up on it—and for her, that was enough.
The weeks that followed their reconciliation were a whirlwind for both Y/N and Joe. They fell back into a rhythm of late-night phone calls and spontaneous FaceTime sessions, sharing moments from their hectic lives.
Joe’s mood had lightened, and while the Bengals' season still had its ups and downs, he made good on his promise to let Y/N in.
But as they navigated the challenges of distance, the world outside their relationship remained relentless. Y/N was on set in Charleston, finishing a long day of shooting, when she received a text from Madelyn.
Have you seen this?
Attached was a link to yet another drama account post. Y/N hesitated before clicking, already bracing herself for the worst.
The photo that loaded onto her screen showed her walking alongside her co-star Drew Starkey, both of them smiling under the warm South Carolina sun. The caption read:
Y/N spotted holding hands with Drew Starkey during an off-day in Charleston. Sparks flying on and off the screen?
Y/N blinked, scrolling down to the comments, her stomach sinking.
They look so cute together!
Drew > Joe, no offense.
Poor Joe. Long-distance never works anyway.
Her jaw clenched. She remembered the day the photo was taken—just two days ago. The cast had gone out for lunch as a group during a rare break in their filming schedule. Drew had walked beside her, but they hadn’t been holding hands. That part was completely fabricated.
She hated how easily people could twist something innocent into a narrative that didn’t exist.
Her phone buzzed again, this time with a call from Joe. She stared at the screen, her heart racing. Of course he’d seen it. She could only imagine what he was thinking.
Taking a deep breath, she answered. “Hey.”
“Hey,” Joe said, his tone calm but strained. “So, I saw the post.”
“I figured,” she said softly. “Joe, it’s not true. I wasn’t holding hands with Drew. That whole thing is made up.”
“I believe you,” he said quickly, and she could hear the sincerity in his voice. “I know how these accounts work. It’s just… I hate seeing stuff like that. You’re out there living your life, and I’m stuck here. It’s hard not to feel… I don’t know. Insecure, I guess.”
Her heart ached at his vulnerability. Joe was always so steady, so sure of himself, and hearing him admit to feeling insecure reminded her that even he had his moments of doubt.
“Joe,” she said gently, “you don’t have to feel that way. Drew is just a friend. That day, the whole cast went out. It wasn’t just him and I.”
“I know,” he said, though his voice was still tight. “It’s just hard, you know? I’m not there with you. I wouldn’t blame you if you… I don’t know, wanted to be with someone who’s actually around.”
“That’s not what I want,” she said firmly. “Joe, listen to me. I don’t care about anyone else. I care about you. Only you.”
He was quiet for a moment, and she could hear him let out a slow breath. “I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have let it get to me.”
“It’s okay,” she said. “But you have to trust me. Just like I trust you.”
“I do,” he said softly. “I trust you, Y/N. I just hate that we’re apart so much. I miss you.”
“I miss you too,” she said, her voice thick with emotion.
The words hovered on the tip of her tongue. She hadn’t said them before, and neither had he. But now, after everything, it felt like the right moment.
“I love you, Joe,” she said, her voice steady despite the nerves coursing through her.
The line went silent for a beat, and she held her breath.
“I love you too,” he finally said, his voice filled with warmth. “I’ve been wanting to tell you for a while. I just didn’t want to scare you off.”
She let out a soft laugh, relief washing over her. “You could never scare me off.”
They stayed on the phone for hours, the conversation shifting from deep confessions to light hearted banter. For the first time in weeks, Y/N felt completely at ease, knowing that no rumor or distance could shake the foundation they had built together.
