Summary: When young Y/n gets fired from one of her jobs she struggles to make enough money for college loans and Bills, that’s when she meets Steve. What Steve is looking for isn’t exactly a relationship, he just wants someone to look pretty in his arms and take care of his needs without asking many questions about his job.

CHAPTER THREE

As you stood in that elevator and it went upwards, you were waiting for it to stop on the 33rd floor, your hands clutching on your dress like your life depends on it. You looked at yourself one more time in the glass wall of the elevator and realized you were chewing on your lips so you released it for the sake of your makeup. As the elevator finally came to a stop you quickly took one last look at yourself before walking out of it to the most beautiful scenery you have ever seen with your naked eyes. All the walls were made of glass you could see the whole city from up here. The lights were dim. It was just beautiful but what surprised you the most was there was no other person there besides you and well, Steve.

As soon as Steve saw you he stood up from his place, his eyes soaking you in. They lingered on your face before doing a once-over of your whole body. Damn, he looked good. Wearing a dark blue button-up shirt which was as always a little too tight for him, and his black tie was a little loose around his neck. Cuffs were folded to his elbow making his arms look stronger than ever. You have never even thought that you would ever want to be squeezed by someone, but here you are wanting him to just wrap his big arms around you and pull you into his strong chest. You could literally see his pecs and bulging bicep from the shirt. You noticed that he had shaved his stubble too which made you wanna reach out and caress his face.

“Hello, Mr. Rogers.” You said in a seductive voice as you walked up to him, feeling a little more confident by his reaction.

“Hi, beautiful.” He said before proceeding to pull out your chair for you.

“Thank you, kind sir.” You said and sat down and then he took his seat as well.

“As much as I like hearing those things from your lips, I would settle for just Steve for now.” He said, and there was it again. That authority that turns you on, making you squeeze your thighs together. “You look really beautiful, Y/n.” He said not taking his eyes away from yours.

“Thank you, you don’t look bad yourself......Steve.” His name felt so nice rolling off your tongue, suddenly all he ever wants to hear was you screaming his name as he pounced into you.

“I hope you like french.” He said.

“Oh, I love french.” You replied and a smirk formed on his lips.

He was about to make a remark when one of the servers came in with menus in his hands. “Here are the menus, Sir, ma’am. Just ring that bell when you are ready to order. Is there anything else that I can help you with?” He said placing two food menus in front of the two of you and one drinks menu in the middle.

“No, thank you very much.” You smiled politely at him and he went away. You realized Steve was looking at you with a smile on his face. “What is it?”

“You are really good with people.” He said.

“Well, I have to be good with people for a living. I am a barista and I was a waitress myself before I got fired.” You gave him the information and his smile turned into a little frown.

“You got fired?”

“Yup, on my birthday, the day........we met.” You say and you could see the glint of mischief in his eyes by just a little mention of that day.

“Why?”

“No reason, my manager was a dick and he got jealous because I had two jobs and was earning more than him.” You replied opening your menu. Thankfully you were a waitress before so you had no problem recognizing the french cuisine on the menu.

“Well, he does sound like a dick.” He said making you giggle.

“Steve? Why is there no one here other than us?” You asked looking around the big secluded area. How is this restaurant doing so well if no one comes here? You thought to yourself.

“Because I booked all of it.” He replied casually and you almost choked on your own saliva as you looked at him with wide eyes.

“You booked the whole restaurant?” You tried not to be too loud.

“No, why would I do that? I just booked this floor.” He said going through the wine menu.

“Well, that’s not any better, Steve. You can’t book the whole floor just for a dinner.”

“Actually I can, Doll. And I did.” He said with a proud smirk.

“Why?”

“Because I don’t like too much noise while admiring a gorgeous view.” His answer made you speechless as a heat creeping up to your face. God, he was so straight and smooth with his words. You looked away from him as if you were trying to hide from his gaze, not because it was uncomfortable or something but because it was so overwhelming. You never felt like this before, not even when you were with Brock, and you thought he was your one true love. “Would you like me to order our drinks now, Ms. Y/l/n?” He asked with a smirk, very satisfied by your reaction.

“Yes, please,” you said.

“What kind of wine would you like?” He asked looking at the menu.

“Depends. What kind’s better?” She asked making him raise an eyebrow.

“You’ve never had wine before?”

“I just turned 21, Steve. There are a lot of things that I’ve never had.” You said and Steve couldn’t help but wonder what are the things you’ve never have, you were much more innocent than you let on, were you a virgin? Steve wouldn’t lie, his cock twitched at the thought of you being a virgin. Although it wouldn’t matter if you weren’t one, for him you were still the most innocent person in the world.

“Okay, then let’s start with the most basic ones.” He said putting aside the wine menu and pressing the bell. It was as if the server was standing just behind you because he was there less than 5 seconds.

“Are you ready to order your drinks, sir, ma’am?”

“Yes. May I get the finest of your red and white wine?” Chris said.

“Yes, Sir. Anything else?” He asked and Steve shook his head. “Ma’am?”

“No, thank you.” with that he went away

“So, tell me, y/n, where are you from?” He asked and he genuinely sounded interested in it. To be honest no one ever sounded that interested in your life, ever. At least not on the first date, most of them expected to get in your pants. Or at least for you to suck them off in the front seat of their car while they drive you home. Even Brock. God every time you think about him you can’t help but wonder what the hell did you ever see in him in the first place.

“It's a small town in Idaho I’m pretty sure you’ve never heard of.”

“Try me.”

“Ketchum. But we moved to Queens when I was in middle school.” You replied.

“Ah, you don’t say.” He said in a surprised voice.

“You don’t have to pretend you know where that is, I won’t be offended.” You said with a smirk.

“I’m not pretending, I do know where that is.” He said as the waiter approached you but neither of you took your eyes off of each other. He placed two glasses in front of you and poured both red and wine in them before doing the same with Steve. He put the bottles between you two and went away.

“Really?” You asked with a raised eyebrow.

“Ya, it's near sun valley right?” He asked and you were surprised at his knowledge, and now suddenly you were more attracted to him.

“Yes actually, it is.”

“See I told you you would be surprised.” He said with a cocky smirk. “Now let’s drink to that. What you wanna try first?” He asked and you held up the white wine. He followed your lead and waited for you to finish your drink to see your reaction with an amused smile on his face. You tilted your head and gulped back the whole glass. You literally had to physically hold yourself so you wouldn’t throw up. A hand on your lips and a look of disgust on your face which he swore was the cutest thing he saw in his life. “I’m guessing by your facial expression, you do not like it.”

“I hate it. It’s so bad, why would people want to drink it by choice?” You asked making him chuckle.

“I don’t know, doll, why don’t you try the red one.” He said pointing at the other glass.

“Okay,” you said taking the other glass and gulping it back as well, it was bad too at first, but then the aftertaste surprised you, it was actually really good. “It's bad too, but in an ‘its bad but I still can’t stop drinking it’ kinda way.” You said and he poured you another glass.

“Are you ready to order now?” He asked taking a sip from his own glass

“Yes......sorry.” You whispered when you realized you said it louder than you expected.

“It's okay, doll.” He said pressing the bell again and just like last time the waiter appeared in less than 5 seconds.

“May I take your order now, sir, ma’am.”

“Yes, the lady will have a...”

“Bœuf bourguignon.” You said reading out of the menu.

“And I’ll have the coq au vin and lamb chops with a cognac dijon creme sauce.”

“Anything else, sir, ma’am?”

“No.” with that the waiter went away.

“You sound really sexy when you speak french.” You said as you bit your lips. The wine was kicking in already, making you feel more confident than you did at the starting of the night.

“Really? It was merely a word, doll.” There was that nickname again, that made your heart flutter the whole night.

“And it was a sexy word when it came from you.”

“Thanks, Doll.”

As the end of your date neared and you two were finishing your dinner, you have talked about everything you could on your first date. He told you that he was from Brooklyn, although you have guessed already by his accent. He was a self-made businessman and billionaire, his mom died a few years ago. There was a glint of sadness in his eyes when he was talking about her, and at that moment you so badly wanted to hug him and comfort him. But when you asked him what it was that he actually does he fell silent and instantly converted the conversation to you. It lingered to you at first but then you drank two more glasses of wine and everything was normal again.

He knew that you scored 170 on your LSAT, It was your third year of majoring in criminal justice, and you were preparing for MPRE with it. He knew that you lived with your sister and her husband, you left the details about his sleaziness. He knew you had 1 niece and 2 nephews and you loved those brats a lot.

By the time you were talking about your two best friends, you were a lot tipsier than you wanted to be. You were giggling like crazy.

“You up for dessert, doll?” He asked when you finally finished your meal.

‘yes, and I want you in the dessert.’ you thought but kept it to yourself.

“No, Stevie, I’m full.” You said and he raised an eyebrow. You barely ate anything, how could you be full. He ordered more than you and he still wasn’t full.

“You’re full? You barely ate anything.” He asked and within the next second, you were standing in front of him.

“Trust me I’m full.” You said pulling his hand and putting it on your stomach. If you were not a little drunk right now you would be so embarrassed by yourself. What the hell were you doing? “But I am hungry for something else.” You whispered in a low seductive tone.

At that moment it took everything in Steve to not pull you down and give you the best kiss of your life. But he had no right to take your advantage like that, no one had the right to take your advantage like that. You were not in the right state of mind right now, and it would be wrong to kiss you.

“Okay, Y/n. Let's take you home.”

As the two of you came down in the elevator as you leaned against him you didn’t take your eyes off of his face for even a second. His arm was around your waist the whole time in a protective manner so that you wouldn’t trip on your own steps. He practically carried you out of the building, it was so easy for him. You were so small and fragile that he was scared he would break you in half if he grabs you too tight.

“To Ms. Y/l/n’s place, Pete,” Steve said to his driver as he opened the door of the backseat and helped you inside. When Steve slipped in the car after you, you slide closer to him. You bit your lips before pulling your hair back in a ponytail ready to give him his reward, you definitely weren’t in the right state of your mind. Steve raised an eyebrow at your action. As your hands neared the buckle of his belt he grabbed your wrist and asked.

“What are you doing, Doll?”

“Well, isn’t it what you want?” you asked with a confused expression.

“No, Doll. I mean I do, I really do. But not now, not when you can’t think straight. I can not take advantage of you. And besides, you don’t have to do it because I want it, you can do it when you want it.” He said realizing your hair from the ponytail. He tucked your hair behind your ear as the strands came down and covered your face. He liked looking at your face, ever since he started this business he couldn’t find the innocence around his life anymore. That’s what attracted him to you in the first place, even in that club dancing like that there was something pure and innocent in your face. You gave him an assurance that there was still some innocence remaining in this cruel world. You were so soft, figuratively and literally, that he was scared that he would corrupt you.

“Huh, no one has said that to me before.” You said putting your head on his shoulder.

The rest of the ride was silent, but not awkward. He let you rest till you get to the house that reminded you that you had so confidently told Lisa that you would move out tomorrow but where the hell would you go. Wanda and Sharon’s place was barely big enough for them she wouldn’t be able to fit herself in the tiny apartment. “What happened, Doll?” Steve asked as he saw the look on your face.

“Nothing.” You said with a smile, you didn’t want to tell him your sob story, You wanted to complete the night in a good mood. “Thank you so much for tonight, Steve.”

“Thank you for coming on this date with me, Doll.” He said and you sat up straight looking him in the eyes while biting your lips. It had become a habit of you by now. You were so lost in your ocean blue eyes that you didn’t even realize that the car has come to a stop now, Pete had stepped out of the car to give you and Steve some privacy. “Y/n?” He said.

“Huh?”

“We have arrived.” He said even though he wanted nothing more than to just sit there all night and stare at your face he knew he had to let you go.

His words pulled you out of your trans and you looked around to see your sister’s house. The lights were still on. Which made you frown because they usually go to bed by now.

Steve then opened the door for you and help you out and then led you to the front door.

“It's okay, I can go from here.” You said as you reached the front porch.

“I’m not leaving until you’re safe inside, Y/n.” He firmly stated with that authoritative voice that he uses whenever he wants something and you couldn’t help but nod.

As you reached the front door you turned to face him. You took a step back as you almost collided with his chest. “Goodnight, Steve.” You said, your eyes were almost begging him to kiss you, at least one peck on the lips. Okay just on the cheek, Steve, please. You were silently pleading to him but he just settled for a hug instead. Guess that would do for tonight.

His big strong arms wrapped around your small waist and pulled you close to his chest. He slightly pulled you up from the ground in the process. God, he smelled so good. And you felt so small in his arms, You were not really what people call petite, the curves of your chest and ass were bigger than Wanda and Sharon’s or most women who were considered petite, so it was so good to feel so small and petite in his arms.

“Goodnight, Doll.” He said before pulling away from you and settling you on the ground. You pilled out your key from your purse and opened the door. You sneaked a last glance at him before slipping inside. That stupid grin on your face was back again.

But that stupid grin was soon gone from your face and turned into a scowl when you saw that Lisa was sitting in the living room, sipping tea.

“I wanted to talk to you.” She said as you made your way toward your room.

“What is it?” You asked without looking at her way.

“You can stay here.” That sentence made you turn around so fast that you almost lost your balance. Thanks to the TV stand you didn’t actually fall down. “I’m not saying you can stay here forever without rent. I’m just giving you a week time to find an actual place to live before moving out.” She said

“And you’re doing this out of the goodness of your heart?” You made a sarcastic remark. You couldn’t help but think it had something to do with the Mercedes showing up to pick you up for your date. You didn’t say it though, you didn’t want to sound like an ungrateful bitch.

“Oh please. I just don’t want you to run to dad and bitch to him about how I’m treating you. He already hates me enough.” Lisa said, putting aside her cup and crossing her arms across her chest.

“Dad doesn’t hate you, Lisa. He just hates Martin. And you know it yourself he isn’t really likable. Anyway, Thank you, I appreciate it, really. I promise I’ll be out of your hair as soon as possible. You looked at the clock which read 12:30, still have some time. If you go to sleep right now you’ll be able to make it to the cafe by 6. So you quickly changed your clothes and went to bed.

The next morning you were awoken by your stupid alarm which blared beside you. You groaned before rolling over and shutting it off. As you opened your eyes they went straight to your clock which read 5:10, you’ll have to get up soon or you’ll be late again. Last night was still fresh in your head, a smile made its way on your lips as you thought about Steve. He was so sweet and gentle and at the same time so dominating and supreme. Your hand went straight to your phone in hopes to see a text from him. Disappointment filled you there was none from him, would he talk to you after what you did last night? Before your mind could do any self humiliating presumptions you reminded yourself that it was just 5:10 in the morning, maybe he wasn’t even up yet.

You wanted to feel embarrassed for last night but you couldn’t. He did say he wanted it, right? He just wanted you to want it too before you do it, he wanted you to be sober so he wouldn’t feel like he was taking advantage of you. You couldn’t remember the last time a guy treated you so nicely. Most people you dated didn’t care if you were drunk or not.

You quickly plucked up your courage and got out of the comforter. The cold air of the morning instantly hit you like a ton of bricks made of ice. You took a quick hot shower and changed into blue high waist jeans and a red white and black crop shirt, putting a little more effort into your look. When you rushed out of the front door Lisa, Martin, and the kids were still asleep which was good because you weren’t ready to face the kids after your argument with their mother last night. What did they think about you now? Were you a bad person for them?

“Good morning, Y/n,” Rick said with an enthusiastic smile as you tie your apron around your waist. “You’re right on time today.” He added as he put your name up on the chart.

“Good morning, Rick. Someone’s in a good mood.” You smiled.

“Guess, who’s gonna turn 18 in a week, sweetheart?”

“Not you, because you just turned 17 four months ago.”

“Yes, me. This Bad Boy. I’m gonna change my date of birth on my driving License, so, baby, you don’t have to hide your love for me anymore.” He said spreading his hand out in a romantic gesture making you laugh.

“I’m afraid that’s not how it works, Rick. If your date of birth on your driving license does not match the date of birth on your birth certificate, it is considered to be a fake license.”

“Then I’ll just change the date on the birth certificate.”

“You can’t do that without the court’s permission.”

“What? We have to wait for 8 more months to profess our love for each other. Dammit.” He exclaimed making you laugh again, you ruffled his hair and walked up to your counter. “It's okay, I can wait for you for 80 years, 8 months is nothing.”

You were just halfway through your job when he walked into the coffee house. A smile instantly spread wide on your face. He looked impatient due to the line of four people in front of him. He practically ran up to you when it was his turn which made you giggle a little.

“What can I get you today, Sir?” You asked in a low seductive voice.

“A double espresso and a chat with the beautiful barista.” He said with a smirk.

“I can help you with the espresso but who is this barista you’re talking about?” You asked playing along with Steve.

“This really gorgeous girl that works here. But I can’t see her around right now” He answered while pretending to look around the cafe and making you blush.

“Maybe she’s not working today, Why don’t you tell me and I’ll pass along the message.” You said while proceeding to make his coffee. Your hands worked quickly and he was looking at you with admiration.

“I just really wanted to know if she would like to go on a second date?” He asked with hopeful eyes and you bit your lips as you looked up at him through your lashes.

“I think.......she would love to go on a second date with you.” You said releasing your lower lip with a little pop. “Yeah?” He asked.

“Yeah.”

“Then tell her that Pete would pick her up from her place at 7.” He said.

“If you don’t mind me asking, where are you gonna take her?” You asked and he gestured for you to come closer as if he was about to tell you a big secret and you leaned in.

“It's a secret...Oh, there she is.” He said as he stood back straight and you quickly looked back to see where he was pointing. A giggle escaped your lips as you saw Ruth coming up toward her counter. “Isn’t she pretty?”

“She’s gorgeous.” You replied turning back to look at him.

“Told you.”

“Hmm. That would be 2.75, Mr. Rogers.” You said handing him his cup of coffee and just like last time he handed you a 100 dollar bill.

“Keep the change.” He said and your whole demeanor changed from playful to serious.

“Steve.” You said in a scolding voice.

“Doll.” He mocked you and before you could say anything he rushed out of the cafe. What was it with him and giving big tips to you? Was it because you told him you were fired? Were you a charity case to him? You had to talk to him about it.

You didn’t see Wanda or Sharon that day at all. They both had classes when you had a little time between your college and study group and after that Wand had a study group until later evening and Sharon was working late. You had to say you were missing both of them a little. You left both of them messages as you got to your sister's place. You smiled and said hi to the kids before rushing into your room. You looked at your clock and it was a little after 6 so you didn’t waste any more time before starting to get ready, Thank god you shaved yesterday, your skin was still smooth today.

You pulled on the skinniest jeans you had which hugged your ass and thighs very well. It made your butt look a little more plumper. You pulled on a white off-shoulder crop top with a sweetheart neckline which complemented the curve of your breast and made your cleavage look deeper. It was sexy yet classy. You completed the look with your black block heels. You let yourself up in a messy bun, a few curly strands escaping and framing your face.

Your heart was jumping in excitement. Pete was right outside Lisa’s house on 7 being the punctual guy that he was. You skipped excitedly out of the house and smiled brightly at him as he opened the back door.

“Good evening, Pete.” You bowed a little making him smile.

“Good evening, Ma’am.” He replied as he helped you inside the car.

“Thank you.” You said as he rushed to his side and got inside before pulling out of the street. “So tell me, Pete, Where are we going today?” You asked.

“To Mr. Rogers place, Ma’am. Please don’t tell him I told you that.” He said meeting your eyes through the rearview.

“Your secret’s safe with me, I wasn’t even listening.” You said making him laugh a little.

You felt like you were in that car for hours, while it was only just 40 minutes. “How longer, Pete? Where does he live.”

“15 more minutes, ma’am. Mr. Rogers lives out of the city.” He replied making you sigh, why does he have to live so far away.

The rest of the 15 minutes again felt like hours. By the time the car finally came to a stop, you couldn’t wait to get out of it. Pete rushed to your side and opened the door and helping you out of the car. As you looked up at the house, sorry, the mansion You physically had to hold Pete so that you wouldn’t fall over.

“He lives here?” you didn’t mean to say it out loud but you did anyway. You swear to god your whole hometown could fit in there. How can someone possibly spend time here alone? It was so massive, doesn’t he get lost?

“Yes, Ma’am. This is where Mr. Rogers lives.” The mansion was mostly made of glass and it was covered by so many trees. The fences were so up to around the mansion that you couldn’t see if there were other houses outside, although you were quite sure there were not.

Pete lead you up to the front door and disappeared before you could ask him to stop because you were definitely gonna get lost here alone. You slowly stepped inside and started looking around for any sign of Steve. Then you heard it, the sound of classic music coming from your left. You took a few steps and realized it was coming from the kitchen. You took a few more steps before taking a turn, You could see Steve’s back, his muscles moving under the tight gray Henley as he moved across the kitchen island.

Every time you see this man he surprises you one way or another. Honestly, you shouldn’t be surprised that he could cook, he’s too perfect to not be able to do something. “Hey, You’re here.” He said as he saw you.

“Hey, you’re cooking.” You said, walking up to him with a big smile on your face. You looked at the neat counter as he kept chopping vegetables.

“Yeah, honestly I’m tired of eating outside.

“What are we having today?” You asked.

“How do you feel about...Indian?” He asked picking up a piece of carrot and held it in front of your lips and you quickly took it out of his fingers with your lips.

“Surprised. You can cook Indian?” You asked as you looked at the curry getting ready on the stove. And it already smelled delicious.

“I try.”

“I’ll give you a 15 on 10 on the fragrance. So that’s a very successful trial.” You said. “What are we having anyway?”

“We are having, Lemon chicken, Biriyani, Prawn curry, and some roasted veggies on the side.” He said introducing you to all the dishes.

“Okay, my mouths watering. What can I help you with, Mr. Rogers?”

“I’m almost done, Doll. Why don’t you just go, sit and make yourself at home.” He said but you weren’t ready to leave his side yet. He looked so good while cooking that you couldn’t help but wonder, is there any time when this man didn’t look ridiculously handsome? The answer was no. His beautiful baby blue eyes were focused on the food in front of him. You just wanted to reach out and kiss his pink plump lips, but you settled with just admiring for now.

“Can I just stand here?” You asked in a small voice almost as if he would scold you.

“Of course, Doll. If you want to.” He leaned down to kiss your head and a swarm of butterflies was released in your stomach. Yup, you could definitely get used to it.

When the dinner was ready you helped Steve to set up the table.

“Don’t be shy to tell me if it's bad okay, Y/n. I only cooked Indian one time before.” Steve said as he served you the food. It looked and smelled so delicious that you doubt it would be any worse. You waited for him to serve himself.

“Bon appetite.”

“Bon appetite.” You replied before taking a spoonful of rice in your mouth. You couldn’t help the loud moan that left your mouth at the taste. It was delicious just like you assumed. You opened your eyes to see Steve staring at you his food untouched.

“I’m sorry, it's so good. You sure you only made Indian food one time before? Honestly, I’ve never tried Indian food before but I know this is the best I’ll ever have.” You said and dipped your spoon in the curry.

“Thanks, Doll.” He replied with a smile before digging in his own food.

You guys talked a little while eating before you asked him a question before you asked him the question you’ve been thinking about since the second time you met him.

“So, how’d you find out my name? I don’t remember telling you at the club.” You asked and he stopped eating for a second.

“Okay, I’m not gonna lie but don’t be creeped out okay?” He said and you raised an eyebrow.

“Should I be?”

“Depends on you, my secretary was with me that night so he said he knew you from the coffee shop you’ve been working at for two years, so I might have asked your manager about you.” He said trying to inspect your facial expression you started to laugh. “You don’t think it's creepy?”

“Honestly, if it was anyone else I would but with you, I don’t know why but it's...cute.”

“Cute?” He asked and you nodded. You could see you’ve hurt his masculinity and ego by calling him cute but he didn’t comment on it......for now.

When the dinner was done you helped him put away the plates.

“God, I’m so full.” You groaned as Steve filled the dishwasher. You loved how he had such a big house but he still did all his work himself. You did not see a single worker in the house.

“Not yet, Doll. I made dessert.” He said as he walked toward the microwave.

“So you bake too? Steve Rogers, are you even real? Is there anything You can’t do?”

“Actually there is. I can’t sing to save my life.” He said making you giggle. “You want some wine with it?” He asked as he took out two slices of pie on two plates. “No. I wanna stay sober tonight.” You replied remembering your last date. You didn’t want him to hold back again just because you drank some wine again. You followed him out in the living room like a puppy. “Take off your shoes, get comfy.” He said and you did as he said.

“Do you not get bored?” You asked as you sat beside him and took one of the plates.

“Why would I get bored, sweetheart?” He asked.

“You live here, alone. It's such a huge place for a single person.” You said looking around the mansion.

“Well, I spent most of my time in my office. And I’m not alone all the time, Bucky and Sam come over sometimes.”

“Bucky and Sam? Your friends?” You asked and he nodded before he casually leaned over, sliding his thumb over your upper lip. You realized you had whipped cream there. He then licked the whipped cream off his thumb. You couldn’t help but imagine what his tongue would feel like on a certain part of your body. You squeezed your thighs at the thought. He made you feel like a horny teenager whenever he’s around.

“You okay, Doll?” He asked with a raised eyebrow.

“Yeah, yeah. By the way, where’d that come from?”

“Where did what come from?”

“The nickname.”

“Doll?” He asked finishing the last of his pie.

“Yeah, that one.” You asked finishing yours as well.

“I don’t know I just looked at you and it came to me.” He shrugged and you sat up straight, turning completely to him.

“Then I should give you a nickname too right? Look at me let me think what comes to my mind.” You said cupping his face and making him turn to you. He smirked at how serious and focused you look. “Let’s see...umm...Your face’s really hunky but then your blond hair makes you look sweet, but then you-”

Your words were cut off by his lips on yours. To say that you were amazed at first would be an understatement, It took you at least a few seconds for your shock to wear off as you started kissing him back, slowly at first. The fluttering inside you that you felt the whole night only intensified. Your heart was pounding in your chest and your knees got weaker, thank god you were sitting on a couch because you would have only fallen down if you were standing.

Steve’s arm wrapped around your small waist and pulled you closer. The sweet kiss turned more intimate as the seconds pass. You could only focus on how soft his lips felt against yours, how addictively he invaded all your senses. Heat rose from your stomach to your chest. Your heart skipped a beat as he ran his tongue over your lower lip, you didn’t need to think twice before granting him access. His hands curled bruisingly on the skin of your waist as he pulled you on his lap.

You pulled away to catch your breath but only for a second as you kissed him back. Your hands curled around his shirt, you were sure it would leave a crease behind but that was the least of your concern right now. His tongue was stroking yours very softly. He let out a groan as you accidentally bit down on his lower lip. As cliche as it sounds, you were so lost in him and his astonishing lips that you almost forgot about time. You very unwillingly pushed him away with a hand on his chest.

“Steve, I need to leave.” You whispered as you tried to catch your breath. You were still blown away by the kiss, your mind was a little inoperative, and couldn’t think straight. Your body was uncooperative to your words, you were mindlessly leaning even closer to him. Your soft breast was pressed firmly against his strong chest. You were looking at each other's eyes like you could see the whole world in it.

“No, you don’t.” It was the first time you heard him sound so eager. His eyes were practically begging you to stay. He looked so appealing that you almost gave in, but that little sensible part of your brain, god you hate it, told you that no matter how good the sex is, it's not worth losing your job. God, you wanted to stay so badly but you knew you couldn’t.

“I have to, I have to get to the cafe by 6.” you sounded so frail that you couldn’t even convince yourself anymore. You bit your lips to hold yourself back from kicking away all those logical thoughts in the back of your brain and kiss those sinful lips of his.

“I’ll drive you in the morning.” He said and his offer was so tempting but you knew that if you said you both won't be in the condition to drive back into the city the next morning.

“Steve, you and I both know if I stayed we wouldn’t be in any state to leave the bed in the morning.” You said and you saw him physically twitch at the thought of it.

“That is true. Can’t you just call in sick tomorrow?”

“No, I already took one a few days ago, my manager will fire me.”

“That makes me think, do you really need this job?” his question made you laugh. He looks so cute when he’s begging for something.

“Yes, Steve, I really need this job. How about we meet again tomorrow, I don’t have a study group tomorrow.”

“Hmm that’s a really tempting offer, but you know we wouldn’t have to meet again tomorrow if you just don’t leave.” He said with a pout.

“Steve.” You said as sternly as you could.

“Okay, fine. I’ll pick you up from your college tomorrow. If that’s ok with you.” with that his arms around you finally loosen up and you got up from his lap to put on your heels back.

“That sounds perfect.” You replied and looked at your watch. “Shit, it's already 10:45.” You said and rushed out of the house with Steve on your trail. Pete was standing just outside as he saw you coming out he opened the car door.

“Y/n,” Steve called out, and as soon as you turn around his warm mouth was against yours pulling you in for another mind-blowing kiss. Your eyes immediately closed. You were still not used to his kisses.

With one last kiss, he pulled away and said

“Goodnight, Doll. Can’t wait to see you tomorrow.”

“Goodnight, Steve.”

With that, you sat in the car and Pete drove away from Steve’s house. As a wide smile spread on your lips you realized you were already missing Steve. You also realized that you were too far gone already.

Favorite Quote(s): I love these sort of things, and people, the sort who can act as proper as their situation calls for one second, and then a regular human the next.

Severus had to violently subdue his urge to cast a silencing spell at the naked toddler. But he watched the scene unfold with curiosity. Mere moments before, the boy had been the perfect, docile high society child. Seen, but not heard, a perfect little complement to the seemingly perfect aristocratic life. Now, he was laughing and tickling, and generally acting like an eleven year old boy should. Severus found this dichotomy of interest.

Harbin, or Hari, Harry’s name under his adoptive parents, is still just as oblivious as he always has been for all that he’s not dumbing himself down anymore, or possibly never at all if the age he was "lost” is right...

Severus was curious, of course, but kept his own counsel, choosing to turn his attention back to the transfigured vase, changing it into the symbol of his house, although a nonpoisonous one. Chevalier seemed to recognize this as he held his hand out for the green garden snake. Father and son seemed to be mesmerized by the snake, Harbin going so far as to hiss to it, laughing in delight when it hissed back.

I love Slytherins, and this whole family is Slytherin fight me

Those muggleborns and their families that Severus had to contact in the years before Harbin Chevalier either stared in stupid gapped-mouth wonder or exclaimed over everything like it was the second coming of Merlin. The Chevaliers and their bodyguard, instead, smoothly glided about Diagon Alley as if they owned it. Purebloods that usually turned up their noses at everyone, nodded at them with gentility and sharing space with them rather than glaring them out of the way.

Embarrassing but loving parents is my favorite thing

Seeing that no one was paying attention to them at all, he pondered how she could think he was growing up so fast when it felt like forever just since Professor Snape had come to the house. Mothers could be strange creatures like that.

I love Ron, he’s the dumbest smart person in the whole series and he’s such a sweetheart, and he always means well, and whenever authors get it right I fall a little bit in love with their works

The girl gave Weasley a tremulous smile. The boy fell like a domino. Pathetic.

I just think this is really important and something not a lot of authors actually touch on when writing Harry Potter stories, even in canon we barely get any of this if at all, at least as far as the movies are concerned which is such a shame

Severus watched as the child contemplated his toy. An orphan never stopped wondering about their biological parents, no matter how happy they were with their current situation. Harbin wandered out of his classroom with nary a goodbye. He forgave the slight, knowing that ruminations about his birth parents were taking up the boy’s entire mind.

Sometimes it isn’t about nature versus nurture. Sometimes it’s nature and nurture. Instead of being raised as Harry Potter by the Dursleys, he became Harbin Chevalier, the son of a French diplomat, and part of a loving Muggle family. What would have been different?

Score: 9459858495880883498439859.9..... So like, literally one of my actual top three reads, I’ve read this about six times and started learning French because of it.

Pairing(s): Eventual Draco Malfoy/Harry Potter does not happen until entry four of the series, Wolfstar!!! Background Sophie Chevalier/Uncle Jonah/Yves Chevalier, eventual Wolfstar

My personal headcanons for each of the (Lovely and wonderful) original characters general looks are as follows because I thought it would be nice to add: Sophie is tall, taller than Yves, but shorter then Jonah, though most humans are. Sophie has warm toned tan skin and dark, nearly black, brown hair and golden eyes as warm as the sun. I always picture her wearing fantastic evening gowns for no other reason than that I can.

Jonah looks like if Vin Diesel and Jason Statham were somehow combined if a bit taller and all around bigger, and his eyes are a deep nearly metallic grey, he is bald, mostly because he shaves his head. I tend to think of him wearing casual easy-to-move-in suits that seem emptier than they actually are.

Yves appears in my head as a slightly shorter than average man, though most don’t notice it past a passing observation, his personality is to warm, he’s a little tanner than most white people, but he is, in fact, white, he’s got beautiful warm friendly ocean blue eyes, and his hair is bright and blonde, a little wavy when left alone, but otherwise stylishly slicked into position. He tends to wear obviously nice, stylish yet comfortable suits similar to Tony Stark when he actually puts on a suit whenever I think about it, honestly, Yves is played by a blonde haired blue eyed RDJ sooooo, take that as you will

Warning(s): Past Child Abuse not very graphically described, but both parents are aware of how bad off he was. Child abandonment by Dumble-douche-bag The Dursleys. Said child was Harry in both situations. I don’t even know who else that would happen to in the HP Universe to be fair though.

The kidnapping of a different child. Not Harry in this case. No worries, he’s perfectly fine and his kidnapper is tormented by him the entire time regardless anyways which is great.

Pros: It’s so good I PICKED A LANGUAGE TO LEARN BECAUSE OF IT. You cannot regret reading this. Even if you don’t care for Drarry, you’re gonna fucking love this regardless, and that doesn’t really happen until like the fourth-ish book anyways so...

But the french is so cool, if you hover over it there will be a translation presented automatically somehow, and since I’ve read this seventeen times I’m starting to recognize a few words, which, is awesome.

And Oooh The Game, I love The Game, for those of you who do not know, The Game is, essentially, what “Important People” do for fun, it’s the reason why there are seventy different utensils at a fancy dinner party, why we serve hors d'œuvre, why everything from how you stand, to your accent, to how you talk, and even how you walk, is important at Certain Social Functions, it is, essentially a political ploy, a game to see who is the most Cultered, so to speak. It is the reason why “Look underneath the underneath” is even a thing, for a more in-depth example I suggest watching someone play Dragon Age: Inquisition, specifically The Game mission/chapter/event.

But gods do I love The Game, it’s so much fun, and such a rush, you just have to be careful to turn off The Game when you’re done tho, and not to run out of batteries so-to-speak, They can sense exhaustian and it’s like sharks to blood once that happens

Harry really enjoys slightly seducing absolutely everyone within a five-foot radius, he’s so sweet, and charming, and open with affection, Draco is very adorable about it too, and Hermione’s just such a lovely character in this one, she’s sweet but still her, and she restrains herself some which is always a nice break, Draco actually has to slowly work through his prejudices which is always fucking amazing, and well-appreciated, Ron also has his own to work through, but he’s always been a simple/single-minded person so that was quite easy to work past.

ALSO, THERE’S NO BASHING!!!!!!!!! Except for Ron for a little bit, but Hari takes care of that Real Quick

Harry is a manipulative little shit and it’s beautiful, this is what I mean when I say all manipulations aren’t bad, like, telling your kids they can get super powers if they eat all their veggies, it’s still manipulation but it’s towards a good end, and well-meant

Rebooting...- A JSE Egos Fanfic: Winter Holidays special pt 2

Congratulations, guys. We’ve done it. World Initiative has officially come to a close... God, what an amazingly fun journey of ups and downs it’s been. Thank you, all of you wonderful people who chose to stick with the story, regardless of where you jumped in and started reading. I’m sorry i didn’t have a better way to subtly thank you than add you in as a character in the very far background, but, hey, at least it helps me with the transitions between major plot points and shit.

Recap: As it turns out, the Anti invading our beloved egos’ world has been here at least since either late September or the first week of October, working behind the scenes to slowly but surely capture each of the egos, making sure to replace them with each fakes every time he succeeded. Once he had only three left- Chase, Jackieboyman, and Seán-, he snuck into our Anti’s world, and freed the weaker glitch from the dark magic spells Marvin had used to keep him from ever getting back up and resuming his torment of the egos again. They went on to capture Chase at some point just before Christmas Day, which was the day when Monitor- the foreign Anti- finally enacted his plan, and sent our Anti after Seán and Marvin, while he went after Merlin, Jackie, and Jackie’s newly formed family. It wasn’t until after the world was erased that we were forced to stop watching the screens for a little, just so we could reboot the one we’d been using to see this world’s story this entire time. Yeah, by the way, you’re a highly obscured but potentially important character now. Deal with it, because this detail is gonna train you to love yourself whether you want to or not. Anyways, at some point between the monitor’s crash and when we finally got it to reboot, our Anti was brutally betrayed by his new partner in crime, and Jackie was captured.

[December 25th]

Just as you turned your chair back around and looked at the World Initiative monitor, you saw the dreaded blue screen glitch away, but for some reason, the screen was pitch black. Then, a moment later, one of the two Antis’ face appeared, taking up most of the screen.

“L͝oơk̵ a҉t͏ ̀y͏o͠u͏...͡ ̷j̕u͠st͘ ̵si̡t͟t͘íng th̀ere͞,̢ a̶l͟l̕ lo҉s̛t͞ and͢ cònf͜us̛ed.̛.̸.͜ Almơst ͠lik͝e̷ ỳo̶ú ̶d̀o͝n’t h̴a҉ve ͢any̢ ̀cluè wh҉a͝t̴ ju͝şt͜ h̨app͡e̶n͝e̛d̨..͏.̴ ̛H̡a̡. Then, the screen glitched, and revealed the glitch’s entire figure. To your horror, the other anti was lying in the background, facing away from you, in a puddle of what you assumed was his own blood.

“..͠. ͜Y̷o̷u̢ w͠a͟nn͡a ̶k̷now͠ ̴w͡h͡at’̴s ͢g͞r̴ea̷t abo̕u͜ţ this? ̷H̨e̛’s n͢ot̀ e͡ve͢n ̧thę ̕on̛l͜y͡ oné...͏ ̴I̛n fa͠c͠t͟,́ ͜t͝he ̴e͡ǵo͠s ́y̧o͡u’d ̛m͘et ͜o͡ver̷ the ̢s͞h҉or҉t͟ ̛time y͡oư’̨v͏e̡ ̸be͟eń h͜e̡r͏e?͏ T̵h̢e͜y we̵re̷ ͜all̨ ̡j͟u͠st́ ͠f̴a͜k̕e̸s.̨ R̸e͝p̨lace҉m̵e̢n͞ts Ì p͞ut i͞nt͢o͡ ̸t͡h̷ei͟r wo̶r̵ld̡ s̕o͜ it wou͟ld͡n’t̀ be͞ ͞ob̧vious̸ tha͘t̴ s̴o̡m̧e͜one҉ ͜w͜a̢s҉ ̧picki͠n̕g̛ ̸t͠he̡m off on̷e ͜by̧ ̸o͜n̴e...̢” As he spoke, the screen zoomed out a bit more, as the limp bodies of the egos appeared behind the glitch, in the positions you last saw them in, when you had seen Chase accepting his death that would apparently never come. But, horrifyingly enough, Jackie was with them now, and he looked horrible. His coat was stained in blood, and his face was bruised, too.

“N-No..! Wh- Y-You can’t do this to them..! T-They don’t deserve this! They were happy! They- P-Put them back! Let- Let them go..!” A second voice sobbed out, and your heart stopped, as you realized who Anti was talking to. Merlin. The monitor switched to show him, and you felt your heart shattering. His cheeks were stained with tears, as he sat on the ground, looking broken and lost. He seemed to loose sight of Anti as he focused on the bloodied bodies of his new friends in the background, softly muttering something along the lines of “No, god, please no..” over and over again, in a broken, hoarse, and whispery voice.

Anti took out a knife, and your mind started screaming for Merlin to snap out of it as the glitch approached him, but no, Merlin didn’t, he just shakily grabbed his hair between his fingers, and curled up on the ground, sobbing brokenly at the sight of all the pain his failures had caused. Anti finally got to him, and, placing a foot on his back to pin him down to the ground, raised the knife up, totally ready to stab into the poor man child at full force, and end his life right there, when, suddenly, a blue and black blur rammed into him.

“Get the hell away from him, you fucking monster!” Marvin yelled, hurling the obviously much lighter glitch several meters away with a single body slam. Merlin’s eyes were wide open again, and he watched in pure horrified shock as another version of himself kicked the ass of the strongest being he knew just by the sheer power of surprise.

You silently cheered the magicians on as Marvin ran to Merlin, helped him up, and opened up a portal that presumably lead to WorldView.

“W-Wait..! What about the others?! We-We can’t just leave them..!”

“We have to, kid! I only incapacitated him for a bit; there’s no time for us to go back for any of them! Trust me, I would definitely be going back for them if we could spare the time for it.” And with that, they went through the portal, and the monitor shut off. The other monitor turned on soon after, and showed them arriving at the egos’ house in WorldView.

Marvin stumbled through the portal, his arm tightly wrapped around Merlin as he helped him through, and closed it behind him. As soon as he let go of his alternate self, though, he accidentally stumbled and smacked into the ground.

“O-Oh no! Are you okay?!” Merlin yelped in surprise, immediate kneeling by his side.

“M’fine..! Just... clumsy.” He said, his cheeks lightly dusted with a slight tint of pink as he spoke. Merlin laughed at his response, still being cheerful despite the horrors he’d just seen.

“... Marvin? Who is this?” A familiar voice asked cautiously. Marvin looked up to see a nervous-looking Jackie, who was accompanied by a Peregrine falcon in a blue mask not unlike his own.

“Oh, hi Jackie! This is one of my new friends! He’s... kinda... an alternate version of me..? From... another au..?”

“You went to another universe?! Why?! Why didn’t you tell me?!”

“Because you were gonna say no! I had to go after Anti, Jackie! He was planning to hurt more people, and I just can’t stand by and do nothing but watch as he destroys other people’s lives and happiness just because they aren’t from our universe!”

“Marvin, what the hell?! I told you not to go after him!”

“I don’t care!”

“Fine, then! If you’re going to behave like a child, I’m going to treat you like one! Until I say otherwise, you are hereby not allowed to leave the house or go anywhere without someone to keep an eye on you at all times.”

“Are- Are you grounding me?!” Merlin’s voice was somewhere between astonishment and amusement as he spoke, though, his posture almost made it look like he was challenging his older brother.

“Yes.”

“Well, that’s a fuckin’ power move, if i’ve ever seen one.” Marvin grinned.

Merlin glared at him, “Don’t encourage him!”

“I have no sides in this argument, I do what I want.”

Jackie snorted at Marvin’s comment, and extended a hand out to him, offering to help him up, “So, you have a nickname we can call you?”

He took the offer, and Jackie helped him up, “Uh, well, I don’t really do much multiverse traveling, so not exactly? But, uh, since your Marvin goes by ‘Merlin’ outside of this universe, I guess I’ll go by Sauron?” He had no idea what to call himself, honestly.

“Heh, cool. Good to meet ya, pal.”

“You too.” His gaze flicked to the falcon on the hero’s shoulder.

“Oh, that’s right! I forgot to tell you about our furry household friends!” Merlin exclaimed, “The falcon’s name is Ferris, by the way. My familiars are Thorn and Chomp. I’ll, uh, introduce the others later on.”

Jackie sighed, “Well, I guess you’re here for the same reason as the guy my son brought home today, right? Your universe is gone, yeah?”

“... I think so, yep. Who’s the other guy..?”

“Seán.” Jackie stated.

“Oh, thank god that monster didn’t get him, too..” Merlin looked relieved.

“What?”

“... Anti’s got all the other egos from their universe, Jackie... He... He even took their versions of your kids... and..” Merlin paused, voice breaking as he spoke again, “... I think he killed their mother...”

“What?!” Jackie’s demeanor immediately changed at the mention, although somewhat indirect, of Ava’s death.

“He- I-I don’t know, I just know the last thing i heard before the universe disappeared was her screaming in pain..!”

“... Change of plans. We have to save them.”

“Wait, really?!” Merlin’s face lit up with joy.

“Yes.”

“Does this mean I’m ungrounded?!”

“No, not by a long shot, kid.”

“... darn it...”

[January 1st]

Merlin swung gently on his hammock, the sheer level of boredom involved in being on some minor form of house arrest clawing at the edges of his mind. There was nothing fun to do at home! Not even their visitors were worth messing with anymore. The robo-Chase guy was busy testing out a couple new features that his brother apparently installed a few weeks ago, while said brother was mostly being confined to staying in place and not doing anything for pretty much the entire time it would take for his newly reopened wounds to heal. Everyone else that didn’t have a job had figured out how to tell when he was plotting a new prank or something, so they wouldn’t really be any fun to bug, anyways.

His eyes landed on the window, and his face lit up with a mischievous grin, as he suddenly knew what to do. First, he quickly darted to his door, and peeked out, making sure no one was within hearing range.

Nope. Not a soul.

Then, he swiftly snuck his way back to the other side of the room, unlocked his window, and, making sure to be as silent as he could, he lifted it up, and hopped outside, clumsily clinging onto the side of a telephone pole he’d forgotten was there. Oops.

He shrugged it off, and somehow managing to climb to the top, sat once again in the “spiderman” pose, a big, goofy grin on his face as he looked around for somewhere he could jump to, other than the roof of the egos’ house. Thankfully, there was a tree not too far away, so, figuring it’d be worth a shot, he took his chances, and jumped for it.

Barely managing to grab onto a branch and stabilize himself, he hastily clambered up on top of it, after making sure it was strong enough to support his weight. He surveyed the area again, and realized this might’ve been a stupid idea, because he was at least three or four meters up, and there wasn’t any reliable places to land on, at least, from his position. The next closest tree was all the way on the other side of the canopy, and it would probably be fairly difficult to maneuver himself over to a good position for jumping.

Nevertheless, he inched his way over to the trunk of the tree, and looked around for a branch he could grab that brought him closer to the other side. Luckily, there was one neither too far away, nor too high up for him to reach. He did have to jump a bit, and pulled himself onto it, but that wasn’t really a big deal. To be honest, right now he was just worried about making it there safely, and not damaging his cape in the process. Either one of those would compromise his “great escape” immensely.

He soon worked his way over to the other side, and looked for a safe place to land on the other tree.

Merlin had no idea how long he’d been outside for, but he was in the more dense part of their city now, and his travels had sped up a lot. He now practically flew from rooftop to rooftop, using physics to his advantage for most of it, and magic for the rest, laughing joyously from the thrill of the adventure. He made one last jump, spinning around a bit in the air before he landed, now facing the other direction. This was the closest building to the place they usually set off the best of the fireworks in the city on New Year’s Eve, right? Yeah, looked like it.

He peered over the edge of the building, and, sure enough, there was a crowd gathered down there for the celebration. He looked at the digital banners above the entrances to a few of the shops in the area, trying to see if one of them would display the time, and, sure enough, 11:58 scrolled across one of them. He grinned. He was just in time!

Next thing he knew, the last two minutes were almost up, and everyone down below was counting down the final ten seconds. As soon as the clock hit 12AM, cheering erupted from them, and five rockets shot up at the same time, exploding into a beautiful, but blindingly bright array of colorful light patterns in the night sky.

After a long while of beautiful, but absurdly loud explosions in the sky, Merlin figured it was no more than an hour into the new year, but regardless, the fireworks were still going, the crowd was still watching them, and he was getting pretty tired. Honestly, he didn’t even notice it when he slowly started drifting off, the loud booms no longer keeping his mind from sleep. He was more concerned with the fact that he’d just realized he forgot his mask in his room.

“...ht kid? Hey, kid! This isn’t really a good place for a nap, y’know!” The sound of his other self’s voice woke him up, and he blinked a few times, trying to clear his vision. He regretted it though, because he saw a concerned Sauron and, well, Jackie, his arms crossed and eyes narrowed, looking very annoyed with him.

“... Oops..?” He grinned nervously.

∞Guardians commentary time, because I was honestly too wiped out to get to it last night but I’m still very up for it now.

1. So here’s my question about the opening sequence on Morag. If Ronan had hired the people that faced off with Quill in the opening sequence on Morag, was it just the case that Ronan’s men arrived 2.5 minutes too late, like Peter arrived just early enough to beat out Yondu? Because initially my impression was that they were indigenous and guarding it, but I know now that not to be the case because Korath is very much a devotee of Ronan, etc. But even if it is the case that Peter beat Ronan’s people, holy timing Batman. Seriously kudos to Quill for being even if incidentally two steps ahead of even Ronan’s game. 2. Okay one, Nova Prime Irani Rael is a hot piece and two she definitely deserves to be the girlfriend of General Leia Organa you can disagree with me but that makes you a suspect human being. Anyway, Rael making the diplomatic call to the Kree to denounce Ronan was not out of bounds for normal statecraft. Especially with a new and tenuous alliance, she’s not only right in calling bullshit that the Kree empire has said nothing to denounce Ronan, but she’s also right in advising they make a statement to stabilize their early peace because early peace is amazingly fragile. But like way to not maintain an alliance at all Kree Empire. You suck. 3. The actual diversity of felons on the Kyln is pretty neat, I’m not going to lie. Not just interspecies representation but also body type representation. There’s big very obviously non-straight criminals. There’s cool as shit looking alien species. There’s chubby feminine looking criminals! Tell me who they are Marvel! Tell me. 4. Now that Thanos’ real character has been revealed in the course of IW it is no damn wonder why Thanos thought of Ronan as a petulant child. Granted, Thanos’ logic is worse in that it is slightly better, but by comparison Thanos is an overly dire pragmatist were Ronan is very much just a racist bigot with a power complex. Thanos predictably find’s Ronan’s racial shortsightedness pithy, and I really have zero doubt that if Ronan had actually gone to piss on Thanos’ front lawn he would not have lasted long. 5. On the other hand, really Thanos. #1 piece of advice in the universe is don’t torture and dismantle women and then trust them to be complicit. You will die. 6. If anyone doesn’t feel pelvic sorcery during a close listening to Fooled Around & Fell In Love they are definitely soulless. 7. I also really really want to know what the hell they were drinking on Knowhere that got Rocket and Drax drunk (I mean who knows they might both be lightweights but I doubt it.), because Stephen wants some. 8. I’ll come right out and say it it’s a fucking shame that Tivan’s collection gets blown to hell. Not because Tivan isn’t twisted as hell keeping live specimens and slaves to himself, but more on the “holy crap what cool stuff just got destroyed that the universe will never see again” kind of way. It’s like the burning of the Library of Alexandria, only somehow worse. 9. The nods given to Thor: The Dark World and The Avengers are of course interesting given there’s a Dark Elf and a Chitauri, but I’m super curious about what made those particular specimens of each special enough for Tivan to keep them. Tivan deals with the depths and breadths of the universe coming in and out of Knowhere, and he doesn’t just snag one item from every species or race he comes across. So was there something interesting in particular about that Dark Elf and that Chitauri? Was the Chitauri one of the only remaining survivors after the nuclear explosion? Was the Dark Elf one of Malekith’s higher ups? I’m just curious about them, and curious about Tivan’s reasoning for keeping them. 10. Okay but adding to this whole Tivan’s collection tangent, Cosmo the Space dog cracks me up and not just because it’s funny for Tivan to have a doggie cosmonaut in his collection. Cosmo is a legit character in the Guardians comics, and he’s head of security on Knowhere and telepathic. So even if Tivan is keeping him in his collection or is just trying to keep him out of the way for something, just imagine what it’s like having an angry Russian dog thinking at you all the time because you’re getting in the way of him doing his job. 11. Slightly different bend on the Tivan train, but Carina legitimately just heard Tivan talk about how the stone was capable of destroying even a whole group of people who tried to wield it, and she was still willing to take the risk of being incinerated rather than living with her current conditions. Carina wasn’t resolutely making the hero play - she was making a suicide play knowing full well it would end that way if the hero play didn’t work. 12. When Yondu states that Peter doesn’t give a rip about Terra like. Dude. How many fucking references in this movie has he made to Terran culture? Music and movies and art and holy shit would you look at that, he sure as hell talks like a more culturally integrated human than anything else you twat waffle. Great way to piss him off though and get him to play it your way, which granted is what I think Yondu was probably doing the whole time but still. You don’t look at this boy who idolizes Footloose and knows who Jackson Pollock is and tell him he doesn’t care about Earth. Caring about Footloose and Jackson Pollock at all is a labor of love. 13. Speaking of Yondu, how the fuck is that the jewel frog bauble considered by anyone to be worth of the “high end” community? On top of it just hurting me, it does really raise the question of how is trite crap like that so valuable? Does it have some vector of worth and rarity because its origins are weird, obscure, or finite? Are the gems magical artifacts of some kind? Are the wealthy in space that mother-fucking self-ironic? Because if they are I want to know them. 14. Peter Quill, everyone, who makes a dick message to garner trust 15. Not for the first for for the last time will I say this, but Ravager tech is impressive. And I am amazingly intrigued at how Ravagers got such good technology and resources on their hands. True, they steal things and make money off of trades and pilfering. But that isn’t the only way to acquire goods and it’s not the only thing a viable pirating economic model can survive off of. Half the reason the Ravagers succeed is because they run like a business, have clientele, and are clientele for certain sects, right? So what kind of powerful connections do they have that allow them their advanced fleets? That’s the kind of shit I want to know about. 16. Also what the hell are Ronan’s pilots with the weird glowy psychic spheres on the Dark Aster? Is the Dark Aster itself Kree technology, or something Ronan got from Thanos who appropriated it from some other world he’s conquered? Because we know so little about the Kree in the MCU it’s hard to say, but I suppose we’ll have to wait and see if the Kree ever do become a part of canon so we can have more data with which to make a comparison. 17. Guardians does a pretty good job of taking at least some time to portray how terrible aerial dogfighting is on a mass scale because honestly it’s a bloody nightmare. It’s pictured so often and so carelessly in film that it’s not something we often think about, and the only movie I’ve ever seen that addresses how it feels in human terms is Dunkirk, but the intensity and messiness of it in Guardians is still pretty realistic and I give it props for that. 18. It occurs to me that maybe the younger, post-GOTG Groot is so bitter and antisocial for a while because of how giving the elder Groot was, and the seedling felt the sacrifice and his existence was under-appreciated? It was just a thought that crossed my mind. 19. Also Ronan you twat. “Engage Immolation Initiative” is just Big Mean & Fancy for “light ‘em up fuckers,” don’t pretend you’re any cooler than anyone else. 20. I really really appreciate the design that went into the Xandarian cityscape as a fully intergalactic multicultural society that shows it even in the way the city and buildings are assembled. The city isn’t uniform like a lot of science-fiction cities are - it’s got texture. Different sectors have different styles of buildings and different architecture. Like a real metropolitan area, it’s a patchwork of influences and it’s very well done. 21. Kudos to Rocket for identifying that ground-to-air is a super viable defense strategy. One thing that people tend to forget about ground-to-air is that aside from clouds, there’s no obstacles behind which to hide in the sky, so while ground defense might seem clumsy at times, air offense is hugely precarious because there is absolutely no defense mechanism against any attack except maneuvering, and when a defense is fully able to target that weakness it’s pretty damn effective. 22. It’s interesting to me how well superhero movies integrate climaxes within battle sequences? Some people might call it lazy but I call it interesting when when defense lines break, plans fail, and when teams encounter interference to push the plot forward. Plot movement in Marvel movies curry a lot of momentum from these events, but actually they’re pretty interesting replications of how modern society has been built on the results of such events within our own history. History has been moved by these exact same sorts of events, which is why they make sense to us in storytelling. 23. Peter protecting Groot from Rocket’s crash into the into the Dark Aster? Golden. And then Peter immediately going to Rocket from the wreckage? Stellar. Peter Quill you are a gem. 24. I will never forgive Marvel for hurting me as bad with “We are Groot” as Warner Brothers did with “Suuuuuperman” in Iron Giant. Stop giving Vin Diesel more opportunities to rip my heart out of my chest, please. 25. My mom and my uncle, her brother, both adored the entire GOTG soundtrack so much and it brought them so much joy watching it together that it got me into Motown. Even though it was oblique and dorky, Marvel did something amazing with this movie and gave my parents a piece of their own youth back, while giving me a chance to share in their knowledge and experience. It’s stuck with me ever since, especially because fundamentally that experience is the reason I got into Motown music, which I now adore with all my heart.

Alright, done with that. These are... just getting longer and longer I’m sorry guys no one should have ever allowed me to do this. Oh well. Too late to stop me now. Captain America: The Winter Solider is up next, and oh the pain.∞

Healing and Hijinks

What happens after the events of Haunted and Hunted.

The kids meet their new caretaker and figure out the specifics of their new living situation. 2651 words.

Renee glowered at the person at the other side of the table from her, Charlie, and Vin. Charlie was looking at the floor, fiddling with zir hands. Vin was looking around absently.

Renee had no idea why she agreed to this. This was a mistake. This was so obviously and unmistakably a mistake. They would have been fine on their own. It wouldn’t have been great, but it would’ve worked. They didn’t need some interloper, whom they knew nothing about besides that they worshipped a demon, to inject themself into their lives to take control of everything. It wasn’t going to end well for them and she should have known it from the start. She should have put her metaphorical foot down from the start. But she didn’t. And now she was here, full of regret. She wondered what Alcor would do if she called this off right now. He had said that she they could end the arrangement for any reason. But he would probably get mad at her for not being willing to actually give the person a chance. And she really didn’t want to make Alcor, Maker of Archipelagos, mad. Even if he had assured her that he wasn’t going to do anything to her or her friends, she wasn’t willing to test his temper.

The person, an older werewolf in their midform, smiled gently at the teens. It was clearly supposed to put them at ease. She wondered if that was why they were in their midform, if they had been told that they might not trust humans so made themself physically inhuman to help relax them. How dumb did they think she was to fall for such obvious tactics?

“Hello,” they said. “My name’s Jarled. Jarled Thornbaker. Feel free to use whichever name you’re more comfortable with. I use pronouns like he/him/his. Would you like to introduce yourselves?”

Jarled sat like a statue: solid and still. He was a large man, even for a midform werewolf. He had two meters of height, broad shoulders, and a fair amount of fat all over. His fur, patterned like that of a grey wolf, was short and soft looking.

“How much did they tell you?” Renee asked.

“About what brings you here? Not much. I was simply told that Our Star had requested that someone ensure the three of you have what you need,” Jarled said. “From that I can assume that you have probably been through a significant ordeal, as Our Star isn’t well known for rehousing those who don’t need greatly.”

“Why are you the one to look after us?” she asked.

“I have the space to house you and have experience adopting teen wards,” he explained.

Renee crossed her arms. “What makes you so interested in adopting teenagers?”

“Well, the first time I did it it was mostly because someone had to, and that went well so I kept doing it.”

Vin extended his neck, placing his head between Renee and Jarled. “So, um, hi. My name is Vin. I’m a him, I guess. It’s nice to meet you or whatever. Charlie, do you wanna introduce yourself?”

“Um, alright.” Charlie pulled zir eyes away from the floor to meet Jarled’s. “I’m Charlie. Ze/zir. Thank you for being willing to take us in.”

“The girl with absolutely no cares about basic etiquette is Renee, I’m sorry about her, she’s not normally this aggressive unless politics are involved.”

“Vin! Don’t apologize for me.”

“Well I wouldn’t,” he said, “but it didn’t seem like you were gonna apologize for yourself is all.”

“I don’t need to apologize! In absolutely no way am I in the wrong.”

“Ya being rude, Renee,” Vin said, pausing for a beat. “Rudenee.”

“Oh, it’s quite alright,” Jarled said, putting his hands in front of himself. “I wouldn’t expect you to trust me, we just met after all.”

“But you will expect us to trust you once we’ve known each other for a while,” she said.

“Not necessarily,” he clarified. “I can’t demand that you trust me, that’s not what trust is, and although I would love it if you grew to trust me I understand that sometimes that’s just not going to happen. That said, I will be expect a certain amount of respect. There are going to be rules, and I am going to hold you to following them.”

“What are the rules?” she asked.

“I was planning on coming up with the household rules with you, once we got to know each other a little. We could do it now though, if you’d prefer.”

“You want us to make the rules that we are going to be living under?”

“Well, yes. They are going to have a pretty significant effect on your life for the next few years, so you should get some say in them. And these rules don’t just affect you - I’m going to be living by them too. They’ll govern how we will operate as a household. It’s a good way to formally set boundaries and make sure needs are met.”

“So what if we want to make some completely unreasonable rules?” Renee said.

“Then we’ll have to talk about it.”

“What if we don’t want to talk about it?” Renee said. “You don’t know anything about us. What if we’re just fundamentally unreasonable people? What would you do then?”

“Well,” Jarled said slowly, “are you a fundamentally unreasonable person?”

“I might be.”

“Oh my god,” Vin interjected. “I will not have my position as the unreasonable one usurped by you of all people. You’re like, the most reasonable person I’ve ever met when you aren’t being difficult for the sake of being difficult.”

“I am not being difficult for the sake of being difficult.”

Vin cocked his head. “So why are you being so difficult then?”

“I’m not being difficult,” she said. “I’m being cautious. Something you could really stand to be more often.”

Vin shrugged. “Caution’s overrated. Constant vigilance takes effort.”

“There’s a difference between constant vigilance and actually caring about what happens to you.”

“Nah.”

Renee pinched the bridge of her nose. “ Anyway . Rules. I’m sure you have some in mind; why don’t you tell us what they are and we can get this over with?”

“I don’t have too many, myself,” Jarled said. “I need it to be quiet when I’m sleeping. You don’t need to be silent but I will need to to be quiet. I’m going to ask that you go to school or do something equivalent - we can set up an independent learning plan if public school would be a problem for you. While we’re still fairly unfamiliar with each other I would ask that you don’t wake me during the night unless it’s an emergency. Being on the moon constantly pushes me towards my canine form so when I’m sleeping I go full wolf, and can be a little excitable around people whose smells I’m not familiar with. I’m going to expect you to do some of the household chores, but we can divvy up the specifics of those a bit later. I’m fine doing anything so you can take your pick at what you want to do.

“Do you have anything in mind for rules you want?”

“It’s not exactly a rule but I want a door with a lock,” Renee said. “Ideally my own room but I would be content enough to share a room with Vin or Charlie.”

“It’s a four bedroom living space, so you can all have your own rooms. And yes, the doors lock. Once the lock is keyed to you the only way I could cause it to open is by starting a fire, as safety protocols will then unlock all the doors.”

“I want a physical lock, one that can’t be opened by a computer.”

“That can be arranged,” said Jarled. “The doors slide open so it wouldn’t be hard to attach something for a padlock. I will warn you ahead of time that the bedrooms are a little on the small side; there isn’t much more room than is taken up by a bed, shelf, and desk.”

“That’s fine. I’m used to confined quarters.”

“So,” Vin said, “why does one guy have a four bedroom place, anyway?”

The wolf sighed. “When I was younger, I had a bit of a hoarding problem. As most places here don’t have that much storage space, and I had a fair sized disposable income from my job at the solar plant, I decided to get a place with extra rooms to hold my things. I’ve gotten a lot better since then, but the communal area might be a little cluttered for the first few days while I get rid of some things.”

“Is having us move into your space going to be a problem for you?” Charlie asked.

Jarled’s head shook as he spoke. “Oh, no, no. I can - and should - get rid of a few things. I’m nowhere near as bad as I used to be. It’s just, when the place is empty and I have so much space, it’s really easy to pick up a thing or two that I don’t need, and, well, it adds up. When I have people living over it’s actually a lot easier for me to restrain myself, because I know I wont have anywhere to put things. Normally I would already have cleaned the space out but this was very short notice.”

“Uh, I have a rule, if it’s alright?” Charlie said.

“Of course it is.”

“Could we always warn each other before inviting someone over?” Charlie said quietly. “Sometimes people I don’t know well are really overwhelming and I’d like to be able to prepare myself.”

Jarled smiled. “That’s fine. I would even add to it and say that any of us can deny a request to have someone over if they aren’t up to that person being in their space. And the moon has plenty of places to hang out, so you don’t need to worry about being unable to see your friends because of that rule.”

Charlie, who had basically wanted just that but hadn't had the nerve to say it for zirself, said, “That’s a nice addition.”

“Do any of you have or require a service animal?” Jarled asked, going through a mental checklist.

“Not unless Charlie’s been holding out on us,” Vin said.

“No, I’ve never had a pet.”

“Well, if you end up thinking that an animal would be beneficial to you just let me know.” Jarled moved onto the next item. “What foods do you like? We’ll mostly be eating algae, but it comes in a wide variety of flavors and textures, so I can get some that are based on foods that you like. I also might be able to get the real deal every now and then as a treat, depending on what you like.”

“Oh man, chocolate. Have you had chocolate? It’s pretty great. Really great. You know the internet? It’s like that but in your mouth. Only tasty. And less full of porn. And it’s nothing like the internet, actually.” Vin tilted his head upwards. “Outside of that I’m not sure. Tofu was pretty good. And like, noodles? Noodles were fun. Loved the cronch. I’m going to have to say no on protein bars though. I’m done with the protein bar. That chapter of my culinary history is behind me, evermore.”

“I am going to agree that, on the off chance that an ‘unflavored protein bar’ variety of algae actually exists, I want nothing to do with it.” Renee shook her head slightly. “That said, I’m not picky, and Vin doesn’t know what he’s talking about. If you get a variety of options I’m sure we’ll be fine.”

“I’ve always liked fish,” Charlie said.

Vin leaned back and said, “You’re a walking stereotype, Charlie. Ya just like ya fatha.”

Ze stared at Vin. “I really don’t understand the things you say sometimes.”

“Well, I don’t understand the things I say all the time so you’re doing better than I am.”

“How are you planning on doing meals?” Renee interjected. “Are you going to expect us to all eat together or do you have something else in mind?”

“Well, I like cooking, so I would be happy to make something for all of you, but if you would rather eat alone I’m certainly not going to stop you,” Jarled answered.

“Well… good,” she said.

They continued to talk about the specifics of living together until Jarled stretched out and said, “That should be enough for now. And keep in mind that nothing that we’ve discussed here is set in stone; if anything isn’t working for you we can always change it.”

Charlie nodded. “That’s good to know.”

“Now, would you guys mind being left on your own for a little while I go and make some final preparations for your stay?”

“That would be fine,” Renee said.

“Excellent. I’ll be back soon.”

“Well,” Charlie said after a moment. “He seems nice.”

“A little too nice if you ask me,” Renee said, glaring at the door.

“Aw,” said Vin, “Is someone a little suspicious about the new guy?”

“It’s just… he seemed to know the right thing to say for everything!”

“Well, he did say that he had done this before,” Charlie pointed out.

“Which is the perfect excuse, isn’t it?” Renee said. “He’s trying to get our guards down.”

“That is generally the goal of taking care of trauma victims,” Charlie said.“Getting them to a place where they can relax and lower their guard, that is.”

Renee crossed her arms. “It’s also generally the goal of someone with an agenda.”

“Not everyone has a agenda.” Ze paused before adding, “Or, at least, not everyone has a bad agenda.”

“I’m not saying that everyone would abuse the power they hold over us, but that anyone could ,” Renee said. “We don’t know this person at all. We have no reason to believe that he won’t try something. Literally the only thing we know about him is that he worships a demon. That’s not a point in his favor.”

Vin rolled his eyes. “Yeah, but it’s Tyrone. He barely counts as a demon.”

Renee stared at Vin. “He killed thirty-five million people in a matter of hours.”

“Happens to the best of us.”

“ Anyway , I am in no way unwilling to give this Jarled a chance. We presently lack options, and I’m not in denial about that,” she explained. “I’m just saying I don’t trust him, that I find his behavior suspicious rather than reassuring, and I don’t see that changing.”

“And we wouldn’t expect you to. After all, if you didn’t have severe trust issues, how would we even know it was you?” Vin asked.

She glared. “I do not have trust issues. My suspicion of strangers with power over me is perfectly reasonable, considering my life experience.”

“Ah, the good ol’ ‘it’s not paranoia if they really are out to get you’ argument, huh?”

“I don’t think that trust issues have to be irrational. I think most people with trust issues had their trust violated at some point,” Charlie said. “You have problems bringing yourself to trust someone new. I think that’s all that trust issues are.”

“Well, fine then, maybe I do have trust issues. But I don’t see that as a problem,” she said. “It just means that when things finally go wrong I won’t be taken by surprise.”

“I don’t think things are going to go wrong, though. At least, not like they went wrong before. It would be pretty improbable for something like that to happen to us twice.”

“I do hope you’re right, but I’m certainly not holding my breath over here,” she said. “Who knows? Maybe he really is what he seems. We’ll just have to wait and see.”

Hey everyone. It's been awhile. I currently have the rough drafts of two other short bits typed up, but it might be awhile until they get posted because I want to have the option of changing things if something doesn't work like i hope it will.

Basically, I'm currently writing the first role-playing campaign these nerds have, and I want to make sure that I can actually get the three characters to work with each other narratively before I post the character creation bit. I think it should be fine, but anxiety.

En vadrouille in Alsace

Getting out and about and switching off from everything that is going on in the world is a pleasure which I personally savour more than ever after the physical restriction and weird subtle mental stress of the confinement days. Though it was actually watching an interview on French television with the legendary actor Pierre Richard during the two months stuck in our flat that I came across the real meaning of the wonderful French expression “en vadrouille” it is getting out and about. When asked what he enjoyed doing most in life Richard’s response was that he loved doing just that, especially on foot from his doorstep. I’ve been adopting that method recently combined with an enhanced desire to appreciate small things and on our recent visit to Alsace visiting family it came up trumps.

We have been up to the charming small town of Obernai in Alsace a number of times now and like you do we visited the local classic’s, the idyllic Christmas markets, the magnificent city of Strasbourg and my personal favourite Colmar. Ferreted around in the shops filled with amusing Alsacien memorabilia which are like permanent Christmas and spent pleasant moments trying out the local specialities in tea shops, bars and restaurants where we indulged in bretzels, streusel and sauerkraut as well as excellent beer and wine and much more.

But I wanted to get away from all that and as my French wife was occupied with her family I set out “en vadrouille”. From the kitchen window of Caroline’s house, I could see a huge white cross set on a hill in the distance, that would be my first point of call. So, on a fine morning, I crossed town on foot having donned my obligatory mask then headed up the hill on the other side free of the need to protect and be protected and got away from people in general.

The Mont National is a 320-metre-high limestone hill which extends for 3 km and dominates the town of Obernai. The towering white cross on the summit is a war memorial dedicated to local men who lost their lives during the great war having been forcefully enlisted into the German army, an unusual twist which I subsequently came across a number of times in the area. From the hilltop, one can clearly make out the historic old town of Obernai, the fields and surrounding villages on the plane as well as the Voges mountain range to the south-west, and on the eastern edge of town the huge Kronenbourg, Carlsburg factory which produces a third of the beer consumed in France and in the distance beyond the long line of the hills of the Black Forest in Germany.

The Mont itself is covered in vineyards and it was grape picking time, which was nostalgic for me having done a couple of seasons in the Bordelais in my youth. I knew a bit about Alsace wine and the local vigneron had gone to the trouble of putting up signs explaining the types grown on the Mont and which food they complimented most. It was a perfect way to casually enhance my wine knowledge whilst basking in the morning sun, admiring the beautiful pristine vines and watching the grape pickers harvesting in some rows whilst the grape picking machine was deployed in others.

That really took me back to the day when the very first of these high tractors equipped with beating sticks and a system to suck up the grapes made its appearance in a vineyard near us when I was grape picking. It was a revolution back then and few of the vineyards were prepared for its use, we were quite awestruck by it and aware that huge change was there in front of us. The long-established vendange system was of local farmers helping each other, complemented by annual travelling gipsy groups from Spain and foreign students like me. The modern machine is obviously much more efficient but I preferred the manual days of secateurs, the comradery and the hard work picking entailed, we laughed a lot and the gentle chug of the collecting tractor and trailer with its big open wooden casks was the only noise, unlike the present-day machine which sounds like an aggressive oversized hoover.

As I walked around the hill on part of what is known as the “route des vins” I enjoyed observing the different grape types and the leaves already gradually changing to their beautiful Autumn colours of golden yellow, soft purple, pink and light green.

Then descending downhill back towards town I was struck by the similarity of the high church tower in Obernai with its distinct four decorative statue holders and that of the one in the village beyond in the direction of the Voges. I decided that would be my next out and about project.

Back at the house, I worked out that it was only a kilometre and a half to the village of Bernardswiller and I asked Matt if there was anything to see there. He said, “you know what, we’ve never been”. Which I think is often the case when you live somewhere and are so busy going about life and doing what you have to do then trying to do fairly exceptional things when you have some precious spare time. We were exactly the same with a young family living in fascinating Oxford, it was our visitors who discovered what was under our noses, not us.

Next day was another fine day and Eliane came with me this time. It was a flat easy ten minutes’ walk to Bernardswiller and as we entered the village we heard the loud hum of bees coming from behind a high wall and saw a small sign by the gate “Miel” with a telephone number. On the way back we rang and encountered a charming Alsacien couple who took us into their garden which was huge, with an abundant vegetable garden, orchard and beehives. We bought some delicious organic honey for half the price one normally pays in the supermarket and took it back for Caroline, Matt and the kids to dig into for afternoon tea.

The village was very quiet, typical, like stepping back in time, with lots of large archways with big wooden doors and a stone family crest above and a smaller insert door leading to courtyards and other buildings beyond, very pretty. I noticed another small sign for a beer microbrewery and resolved to knock on their door next time we visit. There were no shops and the old bar was closed, there were two small wine “caves” in full vendange swing, then there was this gigantic church with its soaring tower, quite out of proportion to the village, a reflection apparently of the regional dominance of the church and the riches generated by the surrounding vines in the old days. The village was very pleasant and beyond we walked through more gorgeous vineyards lined with occasional walnut, apple and pear trees. We picked up some nuts and fruit lying on the ground as we understood from Caroline that it was perfectly acceptable behaviour and considered a local perk.

We wandered along the country lanes and tracks to Saint Nabor, the next village, which was at the foot of the Voges and Mont Saint Odile. I had half a mind to walk up through the forest to the Convent on the top which is a tourist attraction but settled instead for just locating the start of the steep track, I was enjoying the “vadrouille” too much.

The next day I resolved to find the Weibel wine cave which sold the wines made from the grapes grown on the Schenkenburg domaine up on the Mont National. I thought it would be in the centre of Obernai as I had seen some rather posh wine selling establishments in passing but it turns out it was in a leafy lane just a few hundred yards from Caroline’s house, suburbia had engulfed it. It was my sort of place, rustic, family-run, with a lovely old lady who helped us taste the wine and explained everything whilst her rugged handsome son directed operations for the grapes to be pressed, and I couldn’t help noticing you could still see the huge white cross up on the hill.

I had a lovely time chatting about the old days with our hostess though not wanting to take up too much of her time as she was also in the process of preparing lunch for the grape pickers and I remembered very well how important that was after a typical six in the morning start.

You can find the Weibel Marcel and Fils wines on www.vins-weibel.com and I can recommend the Gewurztraminer (which can only be grown in particular conditions, namely on south-facing limestone hills like the Mont National), and the Pinot Gris is pretty good too.

Incidentally, Le Grand Vadrouille is a classic French comedy film which is shown over and over on television in France, it’s fun and stars the amazing Louis de Funes.

Empty Corridors - Ch 18

Last time, Lacey was freaked out by realising that she has fallen head over heels in love with Gold. So expect awkwardness :(

Gold was unused to feeling so content on waking. He was wonderfully warm, his muscles aching pleasantly, and Lacey’s scent was filling his head. Memories of the previous evening oozed into his brain, making him smile, and he licked his lips as though he would still catch the taste of her. He reached out with a hand, hoping to pull her close, but the bed beside him was cold. An odd sensation registered, something smooth and warm, patting his nose, and he opened his eyes. The black kitten was watching him curiously, a paw reaching out to touch him with velvet pads, and he felt his grin widen.

“Well, good morning to you, too.”

He pushed himself up, throwing back the covers and making the kitten scamper away, and hunted for his clothes. He presumed Lacey was already up and dressed. It would have been nice to wake up beside her for once, and the first tingles of anxiety were starting to form, deep in his belly, as he thought about the possible reasons for her absence. It had felt strange to talk about Bae with her; it had been so long since he had spoken to anyone about that, and he wasn’t sure what had made him decide to be open with her. Perhaps her own fear and vulnerability, putting him in the unfamiliar position of wanting to protect and care for someone. He wasn’t sure he was any good at it, and her absence from the bedroom made him wonder if he had shared too much, been too open. Acted too much as though they were an item, instead of - well, whatever the hell this was. Or perhaps she was regretting being open with him about her own past. He could understand that, too. Either way, he was pretty sure he had fucked up.

It took him a little while to get dressed and button everything, and his shirt was badly crumpled from where it had lain on the floor all night. It would have to do until he got home, and he smoothed the front as best he could, knotting his tie.

Lacey was in the kitchen, standing with her back to him and gazing out of the window, but she turned as he entered, sending him a smile that seemed a little thin.

“Hey,” she said. “Still no power, so no coffee. Sorry.”

“No matter.” He glanced out of the window at the clear blue sky. “At least the storm is over.”

“Yeah.” She held up her phone. “Leroy texted me. Power company says it’ll be back on later today, with any luck.”

She slipped the phone into her pocket, wrapping her arms around herself and looking down. The anxious feeling began stealing through him, icy pinpricks crawling over his skin.

“We could try Granny’s,” he suggested. “I’m pretty sure she has backup generators.”

“Yeah, I guess.” She hunched her shoulders. “I - I was kind of wanting to study today. Thought I’d get some in while I can.”

She still wasn’t looking at him, and he wanted to sigh. They had been so in tune the previous night, or so he had thought. They had shared secrets and opened up, and when he had woken her from her nightmare and comforted her in the best way he knew, it had been different. It had been like making love. She had been silent afterwards, chewing her lip and not meeting his eyes, and so he hadn’t pushed it, simply spooning up behind her and feeling her relax as she slipped back into sleep. She seemed to pull back whenever he thought he was getting close to her. He supposed he could understand that, being used to keeping others at arm’s length as he did. It was bloody infuriating, though. He decided to give her space, as that appeared to be what she wanted.

“I’ll have to say no to coffee anyway, I have some things to take care of today,” he said briskly, straightening his cuffs. “Looks as though you’re busy, too. I suppose we’ll see each other on Wednesday, when you start work.”

Lacey blinked at him, uncertainty warring with what looked like hurt in her eyes. Okay, so maybe he didn’t understand her.

“Yeah,” she said eventually. “Yeah, I guess. Wednesday morning, bright and early.”

“I open at eight-thirty,” he said lamely. Lacey nodded. She knew that, of course. He had no idea why he had said it. She was shifting a little awkwardly from foot to foot, and after a moment’s hesitation, he decided to reach out again.

“But if you wanted to meet for coffee beforehand,” he added, “I could see you in Granny’s. Assuming the power’s back on.”

Her face brightened a little. God, he had no clue what she was thinking.

“Okay, sure,” she said. “We’ll start the day with a double-shot of caffeine. Got a feeling I’m gonna need it.”

“Yes.” His hands opened and closed on the handle of his cane, and he gestured at the pans of potatoes and coq au vin he had started to cook the night before. “You - uh - you can heat that through if you like. Should do you a couple of meals.”

“Thanks.” Lacey glanced at the stove. “Fingers crossed I can have it tonight. Potatoes is something I can actually cook. Kind of.”

He wavered, wondering if he should kiss her, and deciding that she didn’t want him to.

“Right,” he said. “Well. Wednesday, then.”

“See you around,” she said carelessly, and he nodded and backed away, heading for the door and wanting to bang his head against the wall as he went down the stairs.

Lacey listened to the door close, feeling anxious and awkward, and hating it. She was aware that he wasn’t sure how to react to her coolness, but having been hit with a deluge of feelings that she didn’t know what to do with, running and hiding in the kitchen had seemed like the best option. She had woken in his arms, warm and safe and content, until the reality of what she was feeling, and their whole situation, had made her panic and bolt. Perhaps it had been the storm, and her being overemotional. Perhaps she would see him on Wednesday and feel nothing for him but the faint sense that she wanted to screw his brains out. Perhaps she could be casual about this whole thing. And while you’re at it, perhaps you’ll get a 1580 on the SATs and every college in the country will beat down the door to enrol you, she thought dryly. Admit it, you bloody idiot. You fell in love with the man. You knew full well it could never last, and you fell in love with him anyway. Stupid, stupid, stupid!

Mentally yelling at herself didn’t make her feel any better, and so she made herself a dish of cereal - the milk was still okay, so there was that - and drank a tall glass of water. Study would put him out of her mind, at least. She was enrolled for the tests, and the second of December wasn’t that far away, really. Sighing to herself, she reached for the books. At least she could do her best in this. Maybe he’d even be proud.

She had to work the next day, her final, early shift at the diner before her new job, and she was surprised to find that she enjoyed it. Perhaps it was the air of excitement that she felt, despite her inner turmoil, or the fact that Leroy bought her flowers and kissed her cheek when she brought out his breakfast (extra bacon). Granny and the other girls had got her a card and a present of a new black shirt and skirt, which she planned to wear on her first day. Ruby had slipped one of the little aprons into her bag as well, causing raised eyes. She had shrugged, grinning.

“Just in case you feel like a bit of roleplay with - anyone,” she said innocently, making Lacey blush and glare at her.

She spent the rest of the day studying, refusing Ruby’s offer of a night out, but agreeing to meet on Wednesday evening to talk about how her first day had gone. The power was back on, and so she studied late into the night, her eyes burning when she finally pushed her books aside.

On Tuesday she decided to take a break and do some chores, and so she went into town to stock up on food with her last paycheck from the diner. There was something else she needed to do, but it meant she would have to speak to her father, and so she had been putting it off for a few days, unable to deal with the inevitable confrontation.

The late October day was crisp and bright, and she breathed deeply as she left her apartment, enjoying the cold scent of the air. She had spent the evening hunched over her books, and so she rolled aching shoulders, glancing down the street to where her father’s shop sat, its front bedecked with hanging baskets filled with ivy and winter pansies. The infamous metal flamingos stood guard outside, and Lacey raised her chin. She would have to go in.

It had been the conversation with Gold that had made up her mind. She usually went to her mother’s grave once a month, just to clear the weeds and brush dust from the stone. Sometimes she took flowers, but she hadn’t done that for a few months now, as the only place in town to buy them was Game of Thorns. She had decided that caring for the grave was more important than how she felt about her father, and so she was about to pay him a visit.

The shop smelt the same, fresh and green, with the heady scent of roses near the counter. Moe French was making up a bouquet, wrapping pink florist’s ribbon around the stems, and his mouth flattened as she walked up.

“Hey,” said Lacey. “I wanted to take some flowers to Mum’s grave.”

He grunted, turning away.

“Haven’t seen you do that in a while.”

“When was the last time you went?”

He didn’t answer, and she sighed.

“Look, just make me up a small bunch of whatever’s pretty,” she said. “You know what she liked, I don’t really remember.”

“You’ll be paying for it.”

“Obviously.” Not as though you’d give me anything, is it?

He finished the bouquet he was working on, setting it aside, and reached into the plastic tubs at his feet for carnations and chrysanthemums. He glanced at her as he worked, and Lacey shifted from foot to foot, feeling his disappointment.

“Did you get anyone to help out?” she asked. “You could do with someone to cover the shop while you make deliveries.”

“I can’t afford an assistant,” he said sourly. “Honest businessmen don’t have money to burn, you know.”

It was a blatant dig at Gold, but she ignored it.

“Just get one of the high school seniors,” she said. “They could do a couple of hours after class.”

“I thought that you would help me out, like you used to,” he said. “Guess not.”

“You never paid me,” she said impatiently. “I can’t live on fresh air, I have bills and rent to pay.”

Moe snorted. “Do you? Gotta say I’m surprised.”

She was about to ask him what he meant, but figured she could guess, so she ignored that, too. He added some greenery to the bouquet, his eyes flicking across to her.

“Walking around town in the middle of the morning, huh?” he said. “What happened to this great new job of yours?”

“It was my last day at Granny’s yesterday,” she said coldly. “I start tomorrow. Signed a contract and everything.”

“I’m not gonna ask what the terms were,” he said, and she flushed.

“Yeah, clause thirteen says I have to blow him on Friday afternoons between three and three-thirty,” she said sarcastically. “Better bring your rent payment in the morning, instead.”

Moe frowned.

“You’ve got a mouth on you, haven’t you?” he said. “I never raised you to be like this.”

“You barely raised me at all!”

She was getting angry now, and the way his thick fingers fumbled at the flower stalks was annoying her further. No doubt his hands were shaking from the drink. He cut a length of ribbon, winding it around the bunch, and pushed it across the counter.

“Twenty bucks.”

“How much?”

Moe shrugged. “You can afford it, right? Must be some perks to being Gold’s whore.”

Shaking with anger, she shoved a hand in her purse and pulled out a ten dollar bill and two fives, slapping them on the desk.

“Better learn as much as you can while you’ve got the chance,” he said gruffly. “I’m guessing you’ll be looking for a new job within six months. Business and pleasure don’t mix, my girl.”

“Like you’d know.”

“I know him,” said Moe, popping open the cash register and putting the money inside. “The man’s a snake. A snake who takes what he wants. The moment he decides he doesn’t want you, I’m guessing you’re out on your arse. So don’t burn your bridges. You might need that diner uniform yet.”

She glowered at him, insecurity crawling through her, and he sent her a wry, ugly grin.

“Unless of course you think he might actually have feelings for you,” he said snidely. “In which case I’ll wait for the happy announcement that the richest guy in town is content to have everyone else’s sloppy seconds.”

Lacey’s jaw worked, and she grasped the flowers and turned on her heel, striding from the shop. Tears pricked her eyes, encouraged by the cold breeze, and she blinked rapidly, setting off up the street towards the outskirts of town, and the cemetery. She was seething with a mix of rage and humiliation, but a part of her whispered that her father was right, and that thought was too painful for words.

Gold had kept himself busy by reorganising some of the stock in the shop, in preparation for Lacey’s arrival. His records were accurate and complete, but he spent all of Sunday and Monday going through each of the items currently for sale on his shelves, checking its description and provenance and deciding whether it deserved space in the shop or should be relegated to the back room. It was exactly the sort of task he needed, keeping him busy enough that he didn’t dwell too much on the fragile state of his non-relationship. He had avoided the diner, knowing it was Lacey’s last day, and hoping that her colleagues would take some of the pressure off her. It would be strange to go in for coffee and not see her. The brief thought that perhaps they might go together each day had evaporated. She seemed to want to withdraw from him, and he knew better than to push his way in where he wasn’t wanted.

By Tuesday afternoon he had finished sorting the stock and was going through one of his rent ledgers when the bell rang above the door. A glance up made him sigh to himself, and he set down his pen. Miss Green strode up to the counter in a swirl of skirts, her dark green coat flaring behind her and her curls bouncing on her shoulders.

“Oh, good, you’re here,” she said. “I want to talk to you about the farm.”

“I trust there isn’t a problem?” he said neutrally, and she smiled. It made his teeth ache.

“Not at all,” she said. “It’s just that I wanted to make some alterations, and I’m aware that as landlord, you’ll want to look them over.”

Gold leaned on the desk, hands poised on splayed fingers. She had his attention now. Tenants taking it into their heads to make improvements without consulting him had cost him dearly in the past.

“I’ll want to see the plans and give my express approval before any work is done, yes.”

“Oh, it’s not the farmhouse itself,” she said airily. “I just want to put up some greenhouses and ducting for the water supply, it’s nothing to cause you concern.”

“I’ll want to see the plans,” he repeated. “And give my express approval.”

“Fine,” she sighed, rolling her eyes. “I have the preliminary drawings. I can bring them in this week.”

“Wonderful.”

He waited for her to go, but instead she stepped nearer, leaning on the counter. It made him want to pull back, but he met her gaze as calmly as he could.

“I could bring them here, of course,” she said. “Or you could come out to the farm.”

“It’s not me that wants to make improvements.”

“You could see what I’ve done with the place,” she said. “The kitchen, for example. I make an excellent pie. I’d be happy to cut you a piece.”

She was grinning at him, and he decided that he had had enough.

“Miss Green, I’m at a loss to understand why it is you seem to think we’re old friends,” he said impatiently. “I’m not aware that our paths have ever crossed, and yet since you came to this town you have been displaying a disturbing amount of over-familiarity. Had we met before and I simply wiped it from my mind?”

Zelena pushed back from the counter, looking irritated.

“No,” she said, after a pause. “And there’s no need to be so hostile, I can take a hint.”

“Really?” He turned back to his ledger. “And here I was thinking you were simply a budding stalker with too much free time.”

She pulled back with a huff. “Has anyone ever told you that you’re insufferably rude?”

Gold showed his teeth.

“Frequently. Do I look like I care?”

“Well, fortunately I have a very thick skin,” she said with a sniff. “It takes a lot to knock me down.”

“That is fortunate indeed,” he said. “For you.”

“I’ll see you later in the week, then,” she said. “If you’re in agreement, we can sit down and discuss any terms.”

“My office hours are eight-thirty until six,” he said. “And I’m in no mood to make exceptions, so do please remember that.”

She huffed again, tossing her hair.

“Fine,” she said. “I’ll see you on Friday, I expect.”

“I am almost breathless with anticipation.”

Her mouth flattened, and she whirled away and stormed out, making him grin. Bloody irritating woman! There was something familiar about her, though. Something he couldn’t quite place. Her appearance in the small town, seemingly with no connection there, was unusual enough to make him suspicious, and he decided to do a little digging. He drummed his fingers on the counter, weighing up his options, and after a moment, dug his phone out of his pocket.

“I have a job for you,” he said to the voice on the other end. “A little detective work. Usual fees.”

After giving as much detail about Zelena as he could, he rang off, turning back to his ledger. He would know who she was, and what she really wanted, soon enough.

Wednesday dawned, grey and miserable, and Lacey curled her lip at the weather as she drank a mug of coffee and petted the kittens. It was early, barely seven, and she was already dressed and watching the diner from her kitchen window. It was odd to see Ruby and the others bustling about, setting out cutlery and refilling napkin holders, while she sat in the warmth of her kitchen and watched them. Okay, so maybe she was actually waiting to see if Gold showed up and maybe she was all ready to get out of the door once he did, but that was beside the point.

As if on cue, she saw him out of the corner of her eye, a lone, slender figure in a dark suit and a red shirt, his black overcoat wafting behind him in the breeze and his hair rippling as he walked. She downed the last of the coffee, and picked up the kittens to kiss them one by one.

“I’ll be back at lunchtime,” she promised. “You guys be good, okay?”

Setting them in their basket, she grabbed the bag containing her laptop and charger, pulled a hat down over her hair and trotted out of the door. She still felt awkward about seeing Gold, and was unsure how she was going to react, but she had told herself very firmly that she had a job to do, and her personal feelings towards him shouldn’t get in the way.

Just be casual, she thought as she crossed the road. You’ve interacted tons of times, and the fact that you caught feelings and shit means nothing. Concentrate on the job. Just don’t be fucking weird about it and freak out when you see him.

She pushed open the door to the diner, calling out a greeting to Merida and Ruby, and caught Gold’s eye almost immediately. He was just taking off his coat, draping it over the back of his chair, and he sent her a brief smile, his gold tooth glinting as he shook his hair back. She felt her stomach flip, and almost stumbled into the table.

Great, Lacey. Real smooth.

“Eager to get started, I see,” he said. “Would you like breakfast?”

She busied herself setting down her bag and shrugging off her jacket.

“Coffee would be good,” she said. “And - and I guess some pancakes, if you’re having some.”

“Make that two, please, Miss Lucas,” said Gold, as Ruby bustled up with a pad and pen.

“Sure thing.” Ruby scribbled on the pad, winked at Lacey, and hurried off to grab the coffee.

Lacey pulled off her hat, shoving it into her bag, and sat up, knowing that her cheeks were flushed, and hoping he would think it was the cold air. Gold was looking at her over tented fingers, the dark red of his shirt warm against his skin, light glinting on the heavy ring he wore on his right hand. She sat back as Ruby placed steaming cups of coffee in front of them both.

“I brought my computer,” she said. “I thought I’d probably spend at least the first few days setting up a spreadsheet to record the details of all the items. It’ll make it easier to keep track of everything if we have a good database. I’ll need access to whatever records you have on the crap in your shop.”

He nodded.

“I thought as much,” he said, taking a sip. “I spent the past few days double-checking the prices and provenance on everything.”

She nodded, fidgeting a little in her seat, and he took another sip.

“I suggest you don’t label the goods as ‘crap’ when it comes to listing them for sale,” he added, his eyes twinkling a little, and she gave him a flat look.

“Just make sure I have as much info on them as you can give me.”

“Well, my ledgers have everything I’ve purchased and sold,” he said. “I may need to provide you with more description, as a lot of the detail is held in my head.”

“It’s cool, I need to take pictures anyway.” She added sugar and cream to her cup. “I’ll need to set up in the back room. A flat surface with some cloth covering it.”

“Black would be best for the jewellery, and perhaps green for the furniture and some of the china,” he said, rubbing his chin. “Let me see what I can do. It may not be today.”

“Not a problem, as long as I give everything a reference number we can use to add the pictures later.”

She could feel herself relax, as they talked about work, as they concentrated on what it was he had hired her to do. She was surprised by how easy it was to fall into this new way of earning a living, discussing her ideas with him as though she had done this sort of thing before, and wasn’t an ex-waitress with a working knowledge of Ebay. He seemed receptive to her suggestions, and amused by her enthusiasm, and by the time they left the diner she decided she had made the right choice. She just had to keep on doing her job until she got over her feelings for him.

Gold had cleared a space in the back room for her, a small desk and chair on which she set her laptop. He largely left her to get on with it, sitting at the workbench and making repairs to a pocket watch. They sat in comfortable silence as Lacey began constructing her spreadsheet, adding columns for item descriptions, age and condition, along with purchase price, retail price and reserve auction price. Gold made them tea at eleven, a strong, fragrant brew with chewy oatmeal raisin cookies on the side. Lacey perched on her chair with her feet tucked under, nibbling at her cookie as he leaned back against the bench opposite.

“I’m gonna set up different sheets for different groups of items,” she explained. “So there’ll be a furniture section, and a porcelain section, and a jewellery section, you know? Should make it easier to find stuff.”

“Can you put something in there about sales data?” he asked.

“I can. Do you do your accounts on computer?”

“Don’t be ridiculous.”

Lacey giggled. “Pity. Would have made things easier for you.”

He grinned, and took a bite of his cookie.

“I have to go out to look at one of my properties this afternoon,” he said. “Will you be alright minding the shop until I get back?”

“What if someone wants to buy something?” she asked, and he shrugged.

“Prices are marked. Sell it to them. If they haggle, don’t go lower than ten per cent off.”

“Um…” She chewed her lip, and he smiled.

“No one ever comes in, remember?” he said. “That’s why I hired you.”

“Okay.” She nodded. “Sure. I’m sure it’ll be fine. I’ll - um - I’ll need your records so I can start putting the details in here.”

Gold jerked his head at a large mahogany bookshelf at the side of the room.

“All the ledgers are on there,” he said. “You’ll no doubt find that things aren’t in the order you want, but I’m afraid there’s no way around that.”

“I can manage,” she said, looking at the thick, heavy ledgers. “I think - I think this is gonna keep me busy for some time.”

“Well, that was the general idea,” he said, lifting his teacup. “I assure you this isn’t urgent. Just take your time.”

He took a drink, and she nodded, trying to relax a little more. He was looking too good for her to be entirely comfortable, his jacket off and the red silk sleeves pushed up with his gold sleeve garters. She hadn’t even known those were a thing until she saw them on him, but they only added to the attraction. She found her gaze running down his body, remembering how he felt pressing down on her, and buried her nose in her cup to hide her blush.

“So which property’s causing you problems?” she asked, trying to distract herself.

“Oh, it’s one of my warehouses,” he said. “It’s not causing problems, exactly, I just think it either needs extensive renovations or pulling down and replacing with something else.”

“Another warehouse?” she asked.

“Perhaps. It depends on the interests of potential tenants. The town doesn’t need more housing, it needs business investment.”

“You could turn it into smaller offices or retail spaces,” she suggested. “Give discounts to start-ups, or start a weekly market for small traders.”

“Excuse me?”

Lacey sat forward.

“Look, there are plenty of people in this town who’d like to do something else, but don’t have the space or the time or the money,” she said. “Take Leroy and Walter. They work at the hospital, but Leroy’s a qualified electrician, and Walter’s a plumber. They just never had any advice about setting up in business or any premises to work from.”

He was staring at her, but she pressed on.

“And - and then there’s Tiana,” she said. “Making cupcakes out of her kitchen in the evening for whatever bake sale happens to come along. If she had more space, she could take on some helpers, bake full time and maybe work up to that patisserie she always talked about running.”

“How do you know all this?” he asked.

“I talk to people,” she said patiently. “Customer service, you know? I could tell you the hopes and dreams of pretty much everyone in this town. You know, except you, I guess.”

He was silent, and she wondered if she had overstepped. She decided he could handle it.

“I’m just saying that if you maybe put up a bunch of smaller units and agreed a low rent for like six months, it might encourage start-up businesses,” she said, with a shrug, and Gold blinked.

“An interesting suggestion,” he said. “I’ll consider it when I look the place over.”

He set his cup aside, picking up his jacket and putting it on.

“I’ll be back at lunchtime.”

She nodded, turning back to her laptop as he made his way out. He hadn’t tried to kiss her, hadn’t so much as touched her since meeting her that morning, and it made it easier to think. If she was going to be working for him, she had to hold onto as many of her wits as the man had left her, which were precious few.

She went to the shelves where the ledgers sat, pulling one out and opening it up on the desk. There was page after page of notes on the items in the shop, each numbered, some with an entry to show the sale, all in Gold’s neat, flowing script. She sighed as she looked at how many entries there were just one page. At this rate she’d still be putting the database together when it was time to take the SATs.

Once a couple of entries were on the system, she decided it would be easier to use a ruler to see which item she was copying, and so she went on a hunt. There was nothing on the desk or bench, and so she pulled out one of the desk drawers, reaching inside. Her fingers touched thick paper, and she pulled out a bundle of envelopes, her brow wrinkling curiously. A stack of letters and cards, that appeared to be unopened, bound with a rubber band.

Lacey looked around, suddenly nervous. She was aware that she had no right to look, but she couldn’t help peeking to see if her suspicions were correct. Bailey Gold, the top one said, followed by an address in New York. It had been returned, unopened. A quick flick through the pile showed that the others were the same, although the address changed to Portland, Oregon, and then to Phoenix. The New York address was the most recent, and after a moment she pulled out her phone and took a picture. She wasn’t sure why, exactly, but it felt like something she should take a note of. Just in case.

Gold got back to the shop around one, and Lacey excused herself to go home to feed the cats. He supposed he should have asked her to lunch, but then they were going to be together all afternoon, and she probably wanted time to herself. He made himself some more tea, instead, with two of the oatmeal cookies, and started working on the pocket watch again. He had thought over her ideas as he was looking over the warehouse, but although they had merit, he was not one to make snap decisions when it came to business plans.

Lacey returned at two, smiling briefly at him and returning to her work, and there was little more said until the clocks in the shop started striking six, and she stretched and yawned. Gold flashed her a brief smile.

“How was your first day?” he asked, and she returned the smile.

“Okay, actually,” she said. “See you tomorrow?”

“Coffee at Granny’s?”

She hesitated, but nodded. He noticed that she was clutching her laptop bag to her chest, a little like a shield, and so he kept his distance.

“I’ll see you at seven-fifteen,” he said. “Thank you, Lacey.”

She inhaled sharply, as though she was about to say something, but seemed to think better of it, and scurried out with the laptop bag under one arm. He watched her go, wondering if he would ever understand what was going through her mind. The bell above the door tinkled as she let herself out, and he stood up, his leg stiff and painful after sitting in one position for so long. His phone buzzed in his pocket, and he reached for it, flipping it open to answer.

“It’s me, calling to make your day ten times better.”

The man who called himself Jefferson had an almost lazy drawl to his voice, and was a dreadful flirt. Gold wanted to roll his eyes, amused in spite of himself.

“What do you have for me?” he asked, and Jefferson sighed.

“Straight to the good stuff, huh?” he said. “No foreplay at all?”

“Do you want to be paid or not?” snapped Gold. “I don’t have all night.”

“So my last date said. Turned out that wasn’t true.”

“Jefferson!”

“Fine!” Jefferson sighed heavily. “Her name is Zelena Green, thirty eight years old, raised in London by a banker and his American wife, but went to Northwestern University and studied business. She worked for Oz Industries up until 2012, then got laid off. Since then she’s been doing consultant work for a health and beauty company in Philadelphia.”

“Okay, so far, so boring,” said Gold cautiously. “I know you, though. What’s your big reveal.”

Jefferson clicked his teeth, sounding exasperated.

“You never let me have any fun!”

“Just tell me.”

“She has interesting antecedents, if you move in the wrong circles,” he said. “Her birth mother is Cora Mills.”

Gold tapped his pen on the counter, trying to hide his shock. A name he hadn’t heard in a long time, and an unwelcome one.

“Thank you,” he said quietly. “If I need anything further I’ll be in touch.”

“Sure thing.”

Jefferson rang off, and Gold slipped the phone back into his pocket, frowning. Miss Green had made him uncomfortable from the moment he met her. At least now he knew why.

Mistborn first read- The Well of Ascension part 1.0 chapters 1-5

Spoilers for the chapters covered

On this post I began to go further in depth, and give a little bit of a recap, at least in some places if I had anything to say. I was going to try to avoid Wheel of Time comparisons, but I got a few chapters in and failed miserably. So starting with this one: is people rolling their eyes the smoothing of the skirt, sniffing, or braid tugging of this series?

Expectations and predictions:

•Since it’s the title of the book, I assume that by the end we will know what the Well of Ascension is or what it does. Right now it’s some mysterious thing we keep hearing about that has something to do with how the Lord Ruler got his power, but not much beyond that is known.

•I still worry about Marsh. He was instrumental in defeating the Inquisitors and the Lord Ruler in the previous book, but he went in deep for the cause. That can’t be good for his mental or emotional state. I think something bad is going to happen with him.

•Vin will continue to get more badass as she gains more experience with Allomancy. Maybe she’ll even figure out how to use both Allomancy and Feruchemy like the Lord Ruler did.

•The Deepness will continue to exert its influence on the world, and make things uncomfortable for everyone.

Part 1.0: Heir of the Survivor (chapters 1-5)

Chapter 1

There’s no prologue! Wow! Nonconformist! Haha

It’s the beginning of the second book and there is an enemy army already. Where did it come from? Are there other nations? Is it led by Inquisitors, or perhaps noblemen? Aha, it’s Elend’s father.

Ham still says, “the Lord Ruler only knows...” I guess old habits die hard.

Or else he’s an enemy agent. I’m sure some of the characters are. I suppose I should keep an eye out for clues.

OreSeur (the kandra formerly known as Lord Renoux) meets up with Vin, “...tone respectful—yet somehow still a little hostile. As always.” Why does he sound hostile? Should we not trust him, or is this just how Vin perceives him? Is this an unreliable narrator situation? Does he resent the fact that Kelsier is dead, but he still has to serve Vin? Is this just a personality quirk?

Vin has been following a mysterious person who may also be following her. Looks like that person, or someone else is attacking her. *cue dramatic music

Chapter 2

Vin’s attackers are eight Mistings. The mysterious Watcher (why the capitalization?) briefly interferes, seemingly helping Vin, but for the most part she is on her own, eight against one.

As the fight goes on, and Vin beats several of the attackers, the Watcher helps again, revealing a Mistborn among the other Mistings. Vin is forced to use her last bit of Atium in order to defeat him. She will be vulnerable after this.

OreSeur is injured and will need to find a new body, but Vin won’t let him use any of the attackers. I wonder why, seems like that would be convenient. Well, I mean obviously she’s squeamish about the whole thing, but get over it Vin. You just killed a bunch of people. It can’t be that much worse. Just don’t watch him do it.

Chapter 3

Elend’s political theory clashes with real life practical implementation.

Vin used the mist to fuel her Allomancy in the fight with the Lord Ruler. I missed that part in the first book. Was it even mentioned? Will she be able to further develop this ability?

Vin senses someone burning metals, but has trouble figuring out where it’s coming from. Then she sees a faint figure forming in the mist. Shoot first, ask questions later; great plan Vin!

Ham tells Elend and Vin that the assassins Vin fought earlier were from the west, which means they probably weren’t sent by Elend’s father. Ham thinks they were sent by a western king named Ashweather Cett. Elend is worried about being overwhelmed by foreign armies and doesn’t think his kingdom will last much longer if they don’t come up with a plan. He lists off all the problems they are facing. “Oh, is that all?” Ham said. “See? It’s not so bad after all. I mean, we could be facing an immortal god and his all-powerful priests instead.” Bah duh buh

Chapter 4

Sazed is examining the body of a villager who died mysteriously. Another villager witnessed mist swirl around the man before he died. This was during the day, which is unusual because the mist normally only appears at night. Perhaps this has something to do with the misty figure Vin saw earlier. Maybe shooting first actually was a great plan. I doubt this person or entity would be forthcoming if she had asked questions first. Ooo...could this be the Deepness, or something related to it? (Resist the WOT comparison...resist the WOT comparison...AAAARRRGHH...sorry I have to do it at least once.[spoiler warning] Is it like a bubble of evil from the Dark One? Nah, I’m sure it’s something different that I’m not aware of yet.)

“...not to mention Sazed’s own experience several weeks before.” What was his own experience? Was that mentioned and I missed it, or will he go into it later?

After he buries the man he tries to teach the villagers about the religion that their ancestors may have followed, but they show little interest. “There are other things—more practical things—that I can teach you.” Hmm, I wonder what that will be.

Chapter 5

“And I am the one who betrayed Alendi, for I now know that he must never be allowed to complete his quest.” I’m really interested to see how this Kwaan came to feel this way. What did he find out?

Vin reflects on where she came from, both her life as a skaa street urchin, and her time pretending to be a noblewoman. She notices someone following her unskillfully. Soon others join him. They are skaa, expecting her to lead them where the Lord Ruler once did. She briefly interacts with them, but is unsure how to respond.

She gets away from them, comes across a merchant selling dogs, and asks for a wolfhound. The merchant tries to sell her a small, docile one, but she picks the biggest, meanest one she can find, and punches it in the head, knocking it out. “Oh, for the Lord Ruler’s sake...” Okay, it’s not just Ham; old habits do die hard.

She takes the dog to OreSeur and commands him to use it as his new body. Okay, that is not where I saw this going. I thought she was going to use it as a regular guard dog. That is clever. Will he be able to talk with his new dog mouth? If he didn’t resent her before, I’m sure he will now.

Vin receives a new alloy from Terion, an Allomantic metallurgist, a combination of aluminum and copper called duralumin. Is duralumin an actual thing, or something made up for the book? I wonder what it does, if anything. I’m sure it does something, otherwise why bring it up?

“...but you did not command me to tell you if packages arrived.” Uh oh, definitely resentment. I don’t remember him being this sassy in the first book.

Elend and Dockson apparently pretend to like each other for the good of the kingdom.

Vin and Elend discuss OreSeur the dog, and how Elend would prefer Vin to have the kandra with her when she goes out. “...they’re incredibly loyal—I’ve never heard of one breaking Contract.” There’s a first time for everything, Elend! Discussion turns to Kelsier, and how Vin loved him as a friend, but couldn’t be in love with him. He was too harsh. Elend remembers how Kell saved his life, and how that surprised him. Vin tells him it’s because Kell knew she loved Elend, and that was enough to overcome Kell’s hatred of the nobility.

Ham shows up and Vin decides to test the new alloy. It doesn’t appear to do anything, but at least it doesn’t make her sick. Ham wants to practice sparring. Vin wants Elend to as well, so he is able to defend himself. It’s funny how Elend is trying to convince Vin to take someone along for protection, and Vin is trying to convince Elend to learn self defense, but each is resistant to the other’s argument.

*This is going to be significantly longer than my post about the first book. I’m going to break it up into sections so it isn’t a mile long. I’ll see ya when I get through the next batch of chapters.

10 MCU Characters That Could Lead Their Own Movie.

Since IRON MAN made it's debut in 2008, there have been 15 movies released for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, with more on the way... and a lot of characters and actors.

However, there's only been a handful of lead characters - Tony Stark (Iron Man), Edward Norton (Hulk), Chris Hemsworth (Thor), Chris Evans (Captain America), Chris Pratt (Star-Lord), Scott Lang (Ant-Man) and Benedict Cumberbatch (Doctor Strange) - and we know that over the next three years, they'll be joined by Tom Holland (Spider-Man), Chadwick Boseman (Black Panther) and Brie Larson (Captain Marvel).

In each case, the actor and character have been introduced with the intention of them to lead. Most of the lead from the get-go, whilst a few have been planted in other character's movies as a way of introduction (notably Spider-Man and Black Panther in CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR).

At no point has a character been introduced, purely as support, later to promoted to lead. But with so many popular characters, and able actors, surely, as we head beyond Phase Three, we can consider some of them 'lead worthy'?

Here are, in my opinion, the 10 most likely characters/actors that could lead a future movie in the MCU. So, in no particular order...

ROCKET RACCOON & GROOT

Okay, so, already I'm mixing it up by giving TWO names in one entry! The reason for that is - I'm not sure which one would actually get the top billing?! In the GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY films, Vin Diesel is credited before Bradley Cooper, so to that end, I guess Diesel and Groot would be seen as 'the lead'. However, as we all know, Groot isn't the most chatty of characters with only 3 words in his vocabulary. That suggests to me that if the two get their own story, it'll be Rocket and Bradley Cooper taking the lead.

Of course, this movie is one that might come to be made, I think even GOTG director James Gunn has said he'd like to do it, and with GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL 3 set to be the last outing for this group, if we want for of the characters, their own film may be the only way to go!

PEGGY CARTER

Hayley Atwell was, in my book, one of the highlights of CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE FIRST AVENGER, and the MCU have found ways of bringing the character back a few times since - an aged appearance in THE WINTER SOLDIER, a dream sequence in AGE OF ULTRON, a flashback in ANT-MAN, and - most importantly - two seasons of her very own AGENT CARTER (not to mention a short, and a few appearances in AGENTS OF SHIELD).

Her series may have come to an early end, but there's still plenty of adventures for Steve Rogers' first true love. I predict we'll be getting quite a few female-lead superhero films over the next few years, and whilst not 'super' Peggy Carter works in that world, over many decades!

HOPE VAN DYNE / WASP

We've only actually met Evangeline Lilly once so far, in ANT-MAN, but we know we have more of her coming. in ANT-MAN AND THE WASP, she'll become the first MCU female character to appear in the title, and then she'll get to hang with the Avengers in the untitled INFINITY WAR sequel.

Now, it's possible the character will only ever play second fiddle to Paul Rudd's Ant-Man, but considering the fact Wasp was a character that Joss Whedon was desperate to include in THE AVENGERS, and it's possible - of the character proves popular - Marvel may wish to give her a solo film. As I say, I predict a few female-lead films on the way, and I wouldn't be surprise if Lilly finds herself one of the serious contenders.

JAMES RHODES / WAR MACHINE

Okay, I'll mark this as one of the most unlikely on my list, but that doesn't mean it won't happen. Of course, the character was introduced in the first film in the franchise, with Don Cheadle taking over from Terrence Howard in IRON MAN 2. He's since appeared in IRON MAN 3, AGE OF ULTRON and had a nasty, potentially life-changing, accident in CIVIL WAR.

It's expected that Robert Downey Jr's tenure as Iron Man will come to an end soon, so it's possible bosses will keep Cheadle on to keep that 'shellhead' vibe going. But will Rhodes offer anything new? Well, War Machine does have his own comic line, and Cheadle is popular enough.

I'm including him, but honestly feel, if Rhodes makes it past Phase 3, it might only be as a support.

DR. HANK PYM / ANT-MAN

Well, why not? Pym was the original Ant-Man, and we've already been introduced to him, as played by Michael Douglas in ANT-MAN. He obviously had a lot of adventures long before this new wave of heroes showed up (well, not before Cap, but still) and I think there's an audience for him, and Janet Van Dyne (the original Wasp).

Whether it'd be Douglas continuing on in the role - maybe with that fancy de-aging cg effect - or with a younger actor, it could work with a mix of the two - Douglas could book-end the film if not appearing throughout.

I actually think this is a strong option, depending on how much we get to see in ANT-MAN & THE WASP due out next year.

JANE FOSTER / THOR

Okay, I'm just going to throw it out there... Hemsworth's time as the God of Thunder is due to expire soon. He's a possible casualty of the INFINITY WAR, and if that is the way the movies go, the MCU might call forth a female THOR - just like in the comics!

Jane Foster was revealed as being the new Thor, and that's an interesting route to go down... especially as we know Natalie Portman won't be playing the character in RAGNAROK later this year. That's possibly due to her tantrum at Patty Jenkins leaving THE DARK WORLD (before going on to direct WONDER WOMAN for DC), or maybe they're saving her for bigger things? Portman is a popular actor, and capable of leading a superflick.

This might be something to look out for!

NICK FURY (and SHIELD)

Samuel L Jackson's appearance in the post credits scene that the end of IRON MAN, is what excited the world for the promise of THE AVENGERS. He's appeared in a lot of films since, although those appearances have grown fewer and far between as he closes in on the end of his contract.

It's thought that he has only two films left on his contract. He's going to be in at least INFINITY WAR, possible the next AVENGERS film too, but he also hinted that he might be popping up in CAPTAIN MARVEL, so who knows when we'll be seeing him... but there's been rumblings of Nick Fury for a few years now.

Fury was the Director of SHIELD until it imploded with Hydra-ness in THE WINTER SOLDIER. Since then SHIELD went underground, lead by Phil Coulson - as chronicled in AGENTS OF SHIELD) but it would make sense for Fury to take back leadership for a big screen outing. It would also be a good way of utilising Cobie Smulders in a supporting role as Maria Hill, and (fingers crossed) make use of our favourite characters from the series (such as Daisy Johnson, Fitz and Simmons).

Or maybe we'll get to see a younger version of Fury at the start of his career? I would definitely suggest they go with de-aging Jackson with CG for that, nobody can play Samuel L, like Samuel L!

Now, it might be too far down the line for this film to happen, but whilst Jackson's under contract there's still hope!

CLINT BARTON / HAWKEYE

Barton got a bit of a bum deal in THE AVENGERS, being all mind-possessed by Loki, but he was a highlight in AGE OF ULTRON, whilst getting some good blows in during CIVIL WAR. There character's already retired once, but he's still at it. There's nothing to say he'll survive INFINITY WAR, but if he does, maybe the guy deserves his own film?

Jeremy Renner would certainly like to do more, suggesting maybe Hawkeye could lead a Netflix series, but how about this - with the majority of the Avengers going their own way, or getting killed off over the next Avengers film (we assume) maybe Barton will end up being the boss of team, leading a new guard to save the world.

Just a suggestion, but realistically, I reckon Hawkeye will appear as a support for a different lead...

NATASHA ROMANOV / BLACK WIDOW

Scarlett Johansson is hot property. Black Widow is really the leading lady of the MCU at the moment, and there's been chatter of her own solo film for a film. Joss Whedon wanted to do one, and the Russo Brothers seem pretty keen too. Of all the names on this list, I predicted this is one of the most likely - although not guaranteed. As Johansson has said, she'll not want to fit into the tight costumes for ever, so Marvel are running out of time if they want to get the ball rolling.

I think it will happen though, in either 2021 or 2022, and I wouldn't be surprised if we get some flashback action, with her going on some missions with best bud Hawkeye.

And finally... last but not least...

CAPTAIN AMERICA

And by that, I mean either James Barnes (Winter Soldier) or Sam Wilson (Falcon)!

Steve Rogers didn't die in CIVIL WAR like many thought. That's just as well, we kinda already knew Evans was signed up to INFINITY WAR... but will he make it past 2019? That's a big question with most of the original Avengers. Chris Evans has made it known he intends on stepping away from acting (to behind the camera) once his Marvel contract expires - which it is due to very soon! He has made comments that he'd ready to do more, but that could just be a smoke screen.

In the comics, Bucky Barnes takes over as Captain America, and we do know that Sebastian Stan signed a 9 picture deal (to which he's only used 3 currently, with one to three more coming up with INFINITY WAR, AVENGERS 4 and that persistent rumour he'll be in BLACK PANTHER too (which would make sense considering what happened in the mid credits scene in CW). Rogers seems to have thrown away the shield, so it's possible this is where Barnes (and Stan) take over role). Of course, there is a slight hiccup... having killed Stark's parents, he's unlikely to be a welcomed member of the team, I certainly doubt Tony Stark will allow it, so it might be a tough sell in terms of the MCU.

So what about skipping Barnes for Sam Wilson? Anthony Mackie has proved to be a fun and energetic member of the MCU team, Falcon is certainly one of my favourites. In the comics Wilson has became a flying Captain America, under the watchful eye of an elderly Rogers. This might be an interesting way to pass the torch from Evans to Mackie, and Wilson would be a more accepted member of the team - he's already been an Avenger!

Of course, I quite like the idea that - following the death of Rogers - Bucky and Falcon battle it out for the Shield, possibly both becoming Captain America, with only one victorious at the end. They could even it up with Emily VanCamp appearing as Sharon Carter, in the race to become a female Cap. I'd watch that!

So far, Stan as been credited about Mackie and VanCamp in each outing and unless the writers decide Wilson will be Cap from the start, I guess Stan will edge it. Although, I'll admit it now - I want Mackie for Cap! I'm positive it'll be one of them though!

Planes, Tanks and Automobiles

Fast & Furious 6 opens with Dom and Brian racing along some absurdly beautiful coast and looking very mad at each other. I SEE RIGHT THROUGH IT, YOU GUYS. YOU CAN’T HIDE THE BROMANCE. They’re actually racing to get to the birth of Brian’s baby. (Where were they coming from? Why wouldn’t Brian stay home with Mia when she’s so close to giving birth? He’s a criminal millionaire, it’s not like he had a day job to get to.)

This movie has opening credits like it’s a TV show- like a nine minute super-cut of the best clips from all the previous movies. I’m on board.

I still don’t understand the bond between Dom and Elsa Pataky (or just her character in general. What’s her deal?) It’s gonna be awkward when Letty inevitably comes back.

Hobbs is somewhere, talking to…some suspect. We’re supposed to think it’s Dom, but then he walks around to see him from the front and surprise! It’s not Dom. You couldn’t fool me, movie. As if Dom would run off so soon after the birth of his nephew. Don’t you think we know how important family is to him? He starts beating the shit out of this guy, and someone watching is like “Is this legal?” Hobbs’ partner (whose name I only knew after I looked it up on IMDb, so I’ll call her Angel Dust because that’s her character in Deadpool) is like “nope.” It’s bordering on a little too self aware, but I laughed.

Hobbs comes to see Dom for help, and Dom is like “nah you can’t make me,” but Hobbs gives him the new pictures of Letty. Extremely chill Elsa Pataky is like “babe you should go, it’s fine, I get that I’m your second choice and honestly, likewise.” I’m pumped already, I love a good “criminal with a heart of gold helping to catch the TRUE bad guys” story (Catch Me If You Can, White Collar, etc etc.)

Dom is like “Brian, you should stay, you literally just had a very cute baby moments ago with my sister.” Mia is like “No, you’re stronger together. You always were.” Except all the times they worked as a team and people died, but sure OK. Hobbs is like “I know you guys are a family.” No shit, Hobbs.

I am again surprised that Wonder Woman is in this movie, even though I like and am committed to her character now. I just feel like I should have known? She and Han get a call to meet up. Tyrese turns his private jet around to come join the team. Luda showers some pals with money from an ATM and heads off to meet everyone. They’re like the Avengers, and Hobbs is…Nick Fast&Fury? Is that a thing that works?

They’re trying to catch some extreme bad guy played by Gaston. In true Fast & Furious fashion, all character motivations are laid out very quickly and quietly with very little detail. He’s assembling the pieces to create some kind of device to black out communication “for a whole country” (any size country??) for a day, so he can sell it to somebody, probably. I don’t fully know what law enforcement agency Hobbs works for, but somehow he only has one partner and this band of thieves to work with to find the world’s foremost super-criminal. They all negotiate “wipe our records” deals, which seems silly at this point because you know they’re just going to dirty them right back up again.

They wire up Fake Vin Diesel and send him in to see Gaston so they can catch him. As if it’s gonna be that easy. While they’re watching that go down, Interpol gets robbed, but Gaston basically traps all the cops in the city underground (are they all dead now?? Is this the scene in the franchise with the most fatalities?) and we get the first car chase of the movie, because apparently the gang are now in charge of investigating security breaches at Interpol.

Gaston has this insane low-slung racecar with a little scooper on the front so any car that hits him goes flying. It’s a true evil genius contraption. Cars are flipping left and right. Do cars actually flip that easily? Also, I feel like flipping cars would result in more injuries. More of these people should be dead or at least concussed.

Dom takes off after Letty and after cornering her, they both get out of their cars for their grand reunion. Except Letty shoots him in the shoulder and takes off. Yikes!

Gaston pulls out files on all the good-bad guys, and they find a picture of Letty sitting on Dom’s lap. She just says “That’s the guy I shot.” Letty in this movie is like Peeta in the last Hunger Games. She apparently lost her memory in the car crash that everyone assumed killed her.

They need some cars for their plan, so Hobbs and Luda go on a cute lil man date to a fancy car auction. Hobbs is like “You aren’t thinking about stealing these cars, are you?” Dude this is what you get for hiring car thieves. Some snooty guy comes up to them with some racist nonsense so Luda buys all the cars and also makes him give them his clothes.

Wonder Woman and Angel Dust go try to flirt some info out of a mechanic but he pocket-dials Gaston so he can send some goons. Han and Tyrese can see the goons approaching, but don’t do anything to help, stop them, or warn Wonder Woman and Angel Dust. There are a bunch of fight scenes, which I find kind of boring (these movies aren’t called The FIST and the Furious) but no one dies and they steal some insane harpoon contraption from the mechanic.

They realize that Gaston is working with Braga, the bad guy from Fast & Fourious/Wonder Woman’s old boss, so Brian decides to sneak back into the country with the help of that guy whose face he smashed into a wall a few movies ago.

Paul Walker and his they-must-be-color-corrected insane blue eyes get moved near Braga and he almost gets knifed to death a bunch. Braga tells him that he’ll only get near Gaston if Gaston wants him to, which isn’t really all that helpful. Also we learn that he found out about Letty’s memory loss and passed her along to Gaston.

Meanwhile, Dom gives himself a random night off and heads to Rita Ora’s street race, where he races Letty through a lot of traffic. Is no one racing on closed streets anymore?? He looks at her car and says “You never could resist American muscle,” which, nice. Smooth. I like it.

They chat in an empty parking lot and he reminisces about all their good times and she’s like “sure if you say so, stranger.” Question: if she has no memory, why is her name still Letty?

Gaston shows up and they quip back and forth for a while instead of just shooting each other. Dom almost get snipered but since Hobbs was there they were equally gunned and both backed down. Frankly I think Hobbs should’ve just shot Gaston while he had the chance.

Hobbs figured out where Gaston’s hideout is, so he’s like “Let’s go nail that son of a bitch” and he and Angel Dust barge in. THAT’S YOUR PLAN? TWO PEOPLE TO CATCH THIS NOTORIOUSLY SLIPPERY, DANGEROUS INTERNATIONAL CRIMINAL????

Hobbs calls Luda, which is unremarkable except for the fact that his phone says “Samoan Thor,” and I laaaaughed and laaaughed.

Because he’s some sort of magical one-man TARU, Luda deduces that they’re going to steal “the component” (this is what they call it, I don’t know what it is) from an army base in Spain.

They move the component in a convoy to some secret new location, but Gaston and his crew attack the convoy and hijack a freaking tank! (Side note, the convoy is being escorted by 2 giant Jeep-y things, but they’re very easily taken down by bullets. Why wouldn’t you have this super valuable component escorted by some sort of armored vehicle? It was previously housed on an army base!

This tank just starts rolling over all the other cars on the highway, but somehow when the gang races in with their speedy speed cars they’re all going about the same speed. How fast can this tank go?? (I googled it and it said “up to 45 miles per hour on roads,” and “Some tanks have even gone as fast as 60 to 70 miles per hour for short periods of time” so I call shenanigans on this.)

I appreciate that the family is trying to draw attention from all the civilian cars because it seems like that tank is going out of its way to run directly over random cars (which, again, I think could easily outrun the tank except for when it crossed over and started going against the flow of traffic.) A LOT of people died in this scene.

They lasso the tank’s gun and us a car as an anchor, and Gaston sends Letty out during this high-speed tank chase to fix it. Except at that second the tank lurches, Letty goes flying, so Dom launches himself across a highway overpass to grab her and smash through a car hood. I think I yelled “WHAT?” out loud.

Han and Wonder Woman make such a cute team, but I know something has to happen to her since she’s not in Tokyo Drift, and it makes me sad in advance.

They capture Gaston and his few remaining goons, Letty defects to the good side, and they all head back to the army base. It’s extremely clear from the ominous music that this movie is not over.

Brian talks to Letty and apologizes for her amnesia, which he blames himself for. She’s like “I’m sure you didn’t make me, we cool.” According to imdb THIS IS THE FIRST TIME THEIR CHARACTERS EVER SPEAK TO EACH OTHER IN THE ENTIRE MOVIE FRANCHISE.

Gaston says he kidnapped Mia and she’s dead unless he gets to waltz out of there with the chip he stole from the tank. Brian and Dom freak out and the reasonable army guy is like “That sucks but too effing bad, we’re not gonna let a super-criminal go just for this.” Hobbs, the coolest/worst government agent ever, is totally fine with letting Gaston walk but also the family doesn’t get their records cleaned anymore. Obviously they’re like “family first.”

Gaston leaves but first turns to Letty and is like “Hey babe you coming?” Angel Dust is like “Hell yeah you bet.” OH SHIT! I briefly suspected she was a double agent like an hour ago but I forgot about it because frankly she’s not that interesting. I guess I was right all along.

They immediately start another chase scene while Ludacris starts trying to block the cell signals so Gaston can’t put in a call to have Mia killed. Ludacris joined this series as a street race facilitator; I’m not really sure why he’s a hacker now? They’re all like “Where tf does Gaston even think he’s going?” but then a giant plane appears overhead and drops a ramp for them to drive up.

On the plane we’ve got Gaston, Angel Dust, and Enormous Tattooed Goon fighting Dom, Brian, Letty and at some point, Hobbs.

Mia is also there, but she’s a lover not a fighter. I find it comical that Gaston is supposed to be an even match for Dom.

The rest of the team is in cars chasing the plane, also fighting some goons. They harpoon the plane a few times but the lines are anchored to the cars so eventually the plane starts lifting the cars off the ground as it tries to take off. Finally, the moment I’ve been dreading arrived. Wonder Woman falls off a car (heroically and on purpose to shoot the goon who’s about to attack Han) and presumably dies. RIP Wonder Woman.

The plane is eventually disabled by all the harpoons and gunshots, and it bursts into flame/explodes. Letty and Hobbs had made it off the plane, and Dom had somehow ejected Gaston who is presumed dead. Everyone is worried Dom is dead but he emerges from the rubble shockingly unscathed. Mia looks at Han and asks “Where’s Giselle?” which is apparently Wonder Woman’s name. Hugs and tears all around.

Dom hands the stolen chip, which he’d recovered from the plane, back to Hobbs and says all he wants is to go home. The family has a nice chill barbecue at the house. Hobbs shows up and makes fun of Tyrese’s forehead, which is weird since most of them are bald and Tyrese doesn’t even have a big forehead.

Hobbs and Dom talk about something but to be honest I wasn’t paying attention because I was just looking at the weird perspective of these shots. Why do these shots look so weird? Why is The Rock’s head so big?

Elsa Pataky, who is back to being a cop again, comes in to say goodbye and Dom is like “You don’t have to go.” I honestly thought he was gonna pitch the idea of a threesome (which, frankly, I kind of think would make sense in this weird family dynamic. A polyamorous alpha trio?) She and Letty high five over having the same boyfriend. The end.

Epilogue: That scene from Tokyo Drift where Han dies. Except after the crash, Jason Statham throws Dom’s cross necklace on the ground and calls him on the phone as he walks away from the rubble.

I’d been really torn on whether to watch Tokyo Drift 3rd or 6th (aka release order vs chronologically.) I had friends arguing for both and I see the merit in both sides, but I watched in release order. The downside was that when Han died, I didn’t really know or care about him, and when I DID get to know him I knew he was doomed the whole time. However, if I’d watched Tokyo Drift 6th and seen that mid-credits scene, I’d already know he dies in the next movie (and on a smaller level, it spoils that insane shot where they drift around the corner and the crowd scatters like ants.) I’ve settled on, for first viewings, watching them in release order makes sense. For any subsequent viewings, chronological is probably better.

Silver Screen Surprise

Written for Prompt #74 on @cutiepieprompts: Muse A and Muse B are watching a movie together, when suddenly an unexpected sexy/sexual scene comes on, causing extreme awkwardness between them, as they are crushing on each other but not yet together. (The fic is more “unexpected romantic scene.”)

The movie the group is watching is based on the “Action Husbands” series by @boazpriestly, which you can read more about here. The name of the movie was chosen by a name generator here.

Fandom: Hawaii Five-0 (2010) Pairing: Steve/Danny Rating: T (some light cursing) Word Count: 2585 Notes: Set after 7.10 since events from that episode are mentioned. Also, for the purposes of this story, Steve and Danny are conveniently single.

It was a Friday evening after a long week, and the team planned to watch a movie together. Kono had been telling Lou about how the group watched CHiPs together one time and the hilarious argument Steve and Danny had about which one of them would be Ponch, and Lou had remarked that he had never watched TV with the team at the office. Therefore, the team decided to make a night of it. Steve, Danny, Kono, and Lou were waiting for Chin to come back with a movie that he wanted to rent from Redbox.

Lou had made a bunch of popcorn for everyone, and Danny asked him to serve a portion for two people in a larger bowl. He raised his eyebrows slightly, but he gave Danny a large bowl of popcorn.

Danny and Lou returned to the table, where Kono and Steve were waiting for them. Lou sat down next to Kono and gave her an individual bowl of popcorn and kept the other for himself. Danny put the smaller bowl of popcorn in the empty seat next to him and sat down next to Steve, scooting his chair closer until it was pressed up against Steve. Steve put his arm around the back of Danny's chair, and Danny put the popcorn between them where they could both easily reach it. Danny took a bite of their popcorn and leaned against Steve's side as much as he could while they were sitting in separate chairs.

“What?” Steve asked. He sounded tense, and Danny glanced up at Steve and noted that his face was set in a worried frown.

Danny turned his attention to Kono and Lou, who were staring at them with wide eyes. Kono's shock melted away to be replaced by that amused expression she had sported when she caught Danny touching Steve's lower back in Steve's office. There had been a completely plausible explanation for why Danny had been touching Steve like that, but Kono had not been there for the conversation that would give Danny's actions context. To Kono, it probably looked like Danny had been coming on to Steve.

Which was totally not what this was. Steve and Danny always ended up snuggling or leaning into each other when they watched movies together and had ended up laughing and talking to each other even when they went on that double date with their girlfriends Cath and Gabby. It was just a little quirk of theirs, and it was completely innocent.

At least on Steve's part, because Steve was straight and had no idea that Danny was hopelessly pining away for him. And hopefully he would never know. Danny knew he could never have more with Steve, and he wanted to keep Steve's friendship, free from the drama that might occur if Danny ever revealed his true feelings.

If Danny got an occasional guilty pleasure tingle up his spine from Steve doing things because he lacked companionship that would read differently to most people (like cuddling him during a movie), there was nothing wrong with that.

Danny ignored Kono whispering something to Lou and the amused looks on both of their faces and gestured with the popcorn bowl to Steve. “You want some of this, babe?”

Steve gave him a fond, close-lipped smile and took a handful of popcorn. “Thanks, Danno.”

Chin entered the room and raised his eyebrows slightly when he saw the way Steve and Danny were sitting before he shook off his surprise and turned to the group. “I got the movie, Maximum Justice.”

Danny recognized the title because he had seen some promos for it in the theaters. It looked like an entertaining buddy cop action film starring Vin Diesel and The Rock, but Danny had never actually seen it.

“I was thinking about seeing that, but I never got the chance when it was out in theaters,” Kono said.

“Me neither,” Chin said. “That's why I thought it would be a good one to rent.”

“Samantha told me she saw it with her boyfriend when it came out,” Lou said. “She said that it was... interesting.”

There seemed to be a significant weight to the word Lou used, interesting. But maybe Danny was just being paranoid. It had been a fairly tough week for all of them. Maybe watching this movie would give Danny a chance to relax.

He quickly got absorbed in the storyline and characters, which were well-developed for an action movie. He could kind of relate to the Vin Diesel character, Andy, who had a daughter, Cynthia. Thirty minutes into the movie, the movie revealed that Cynthia was transgender in a low-key way Danny hadn't been expecting.

“Huh, it's nice they added that to the movie,” Chin said.

Danny nodded and glanced around the table. Everyone, including Steve, seemed impressed by that. He rested his head against the back of Steve's arm, which had drifted down slightly from its position on the top of Danny's chair, and continued to watch the movie.

As the movie continued, Danny kept wondering when one of the guys’ girlfriends would show up. In a lot of these buddy cop movies, at least one of the guys would have a wife or girlfriend, even though the focus of the movie was on the partnership and the friendship between the two men.

That friendship was obviously close, if the “bickering like an old married couple jokes” the guys kept getting from other characters were any indication. They did argue somewhat, since The Rock's character, Matt, was more of a risk-taker and Andy was more of a guy who preferred to do things by the book, but they were constantly smiling at each other and giving each other casual touches. In between the action sequences, the film showed the two characters hanging out and doing stuff together outside of work. They had special nicknames for each other and inside jokes, and they generally just seemed thrilled to be in each other's company.

“These guys kind of remind me of Steve and Danny,” Kono said.

This was what his relationship with Steve would be like if he wasn't a pathetic, pining idiot, Danny thought. It's how it appeared to outsiders, anyway. Danny reached his hand forward in the popcorn bowl and stilled when he felt the back of his hand brushing against Steve's. He swore that he could feel static electricity between them, and his heart was racing just from the way Steve's hand was barely touching his.

Steve's hand had frozen in the bowl, and he was gazing down at Danny with an expression Danny couldn't interpret.

Danny withdrew his hand from the bowl and chuckled feebly. “Sorry.”

Steve blinked and took out another handful of popcorn. “Don’t worry about it.”

Steve sagged in his seat and sighed as if he was deeply disappointed about something. Danny couldn't make heads or tails of Steve’s behavior.

The climax of the movie approached, and Matt was pacing as he worked with a team that included the other cops who had been featured in the movie to deal with a situation in which the main villain of the film was holding a group of people hostage. Andy and Cynthia were included in that group.

Steve's hand tightened on Danny's shoulder, and Danny wondered if Steve was thinking about the winter formal, when Danny and Grace had been held hostage at Grace's school. He glanced up at Steve's face to see that he was intensely focused on the movie.

Finally, the team of cops was able to storm the warehouse where the hostages were being kept. Matt immediately sought out Andy and Cynthia. The daughter rushed forward to hug Matt, which reminded Danny of how Grace and Steve had hugged once all of the terrorists were gone at that dance.

Matt stepped over towards Andy, and they embraced each other in a meaningful way. The hug lasted for a really long time, but Danny just chalked it up to the heightened emotions from the situation they had just been in.

“I was so worried,” Matt said. He pulled away slightly, but his hands were still resting on Andy's shoulders.

Andy glanced down at Matt's shoulders, and he released a deep sigh. “When that guy was holding a gun on all of us, it made me think of all the things I wish I had done with my life. My biggest regret was not telling you this...” Andy paused before gazing right into Matt's eyes. “I love you, Matt.”

“Whoa!” Kono exclaimed. “What's happening right now?”

Lou grinned and shook his head. “Just keep watching.”

Matt was stroking Andy's cheek with his hand, and Danny was starting to feel just as confused as Kono was. Matt's grin was lighting up his entire face. “I love you, too.” And then they started... kissing?

Danny's mouth hung open in shock while Lou burst into laughter. Apparently, Lou had been spoiled for this particular twist. Danny thought Kono might react first, but instead it was Steve, who began coughing.

Shit, is he choking?! Danny patted Steve's back roughly. “Are you all right?”

Steve coughed a couple of more times and nodded. “I'm fine.” His voice was hoarse, but, otherwise, he seemed to be okay. “I just picked a really bad time to eat popcorn.”

“Yeah, but I don't think you could have planned to see Vin Diesel and The Rock making out on screen,” Kono said with an enormous smile. "Not that I object at all.”

Danny looked back at the screen to see that the two actors were indeed, still kissing. And really selling it, too. The whole thing looked very passionate and emotional. At least until one of the background characters told Matt and Andy to get a room.

“Man, I hate that guy,” Steve said.

Danny stared at his partner with wide eyes. Was he enjoying seeing the two main characters make out or something?

It's probably not that. Danny watched as Andy suggested that he and Matt go home. The couple left the scene with Andy's daughter.

Lou grinned. “Aww, well that's just cute. Look at them acting like an adorable little family.”

Danny's heart raced in his chest. The couple and the daughter resembled how he and Steve had been after the end of the dance.

The next scene definitely did not resemble him and Steve after the dance. According to a brief title screen, it was the next morning, and the camera did a slow pan to reveal the two characters in bed. Together. And shirtless, with a sheet below their waists, which suggested that the viewer was supposed to assume that they were naked.

All they were doing was kissing, and Danny felt like goosebumps were forming on his arms. He had watched a romantic comedy with Steve before and they had seen The Notebook together on the couch that one Halloween, but this felt different. Both of the couples in those movies had been a man and a woman, but it felt so much more suggestive to have two men kissing on screen while Steve's arm was wrapped around his shoulders. The fact that Danny wanted to do exactly that with Steve had Danny valiantly attempting to hide the blush rising on his cheeks.

He shot another look at Steve to see how he was taking this. Frankly, Danny was surprised that Steve hadn't removed his arm from Danny's shoulders yet. His breath caught when he saw that Steve was staring right at him and especially when his gaze lowered to Danny's lips. Was Danny imagining things?

Chin's thoughtful humming noise distracted Danny from the hypnotic spell Steve was casting with his eyes. “You know, I thought this was just gonna be a typical buddy cop movie. I definitely wouldn't have expected this from what they advertised in theaters.”

“It's supposed to be a twist,” Lou replied. “It looks a lot different when you know what's already going to happen.”

“You could have told us,” Kono teased. “Might have saved Steve from inhaling his popcorn.”

Lou shook his head vehemently. “And miss seeing the way y'all reacted?! Hell nah!”

“Speaking of which, what did you think, Danno?”

During all of their talking, the movie had transitioned to show Andy and Matt having breakfast together with Cynthia. The sequence was very domestic.

Danny breathed in and out deeply. It felt like Steve was asking him about more than just the movie.

“Well, I didn't know what was going to happen like Chin, so for a while, I was wondering when a girlfriend or wife would show up. But then the kiss happened, and the lack of girlfriends made sense. I mean, look at them...” He gestured vaguely at the screen, where Matt served up a plate of pancakes to Cynthia, before he dropped a kiss on Andy's lips and Cynthia giggled. “They look perfect together.”

Kono smiled over at Danny. “Aww, Danny, that was really sweet.”

Steve leaned in to whisper in Danny's ear. “I think they look perfect together, too.”

Danny was starting to think he wasn't imagining things. Maybe Steve had been having the same thoughts he had been having, making the same connections between their lives and the lives of Matt and Andy. Danny felt hope breaking through his typical negative thoughts, and he let himself bask in the sensation.

The movie concluded and Chin walked to the DVD player as the credits rolled. “Well, I guess they didn't need girlfriends.” Chin opened the DVD player and put the DVD back in its case. He smiled serenely at the group, focusing most of his attention on Steve and Danny. “I think they just needed each other.”

Kono laughed. “You have good taste in movies, but that was really lame, cuz.” She yawned and stretched exaggeratedly. “Wow, look at the time! I better get home soon.”

“Oh, uh, yeah, me too.” Lou stood up as well.

Danny rolled his eyes at their poor acting. It wasn't that late. They were obviously just pretending to be tired so that Steve and Danny could have “alone time.”

The door swung behind Chin as he followed Lou and Kono out of the room. For a couple of moments, Steve and Danny sat in an awkward silence until Steve turned his chair at an angle so that he was facing Danny.

“Hey, Danny, just, uh, hypothetically speaking...”

“Of course.” Danny nodded, trying not to grin too hard.

“If we were in a buddy cop movie, do you think the girlfriends would show up at some point?”

Danny shook his head. He started to lean in and let his goofy smile break through. “No. Hypothetically, do you think we would surprise everyone?”

Steve beamed as he leaned in further, and his gaze traveled down to Danny's lips again. “Yeah. Hypothetically.”

Danny closed the small distance between their lips, and the kiss they shared was not hypothetical. It was filled with laughter because Steve was apparently so happy that he couldn't stop smiling, and Danny ended up kissing his teeth. The next one was more tender, because after Danny finally stopped laughing, Steve cradled Danny's face in his hands and kissed him with all of the emotion he had been suppressing (which was a lot since Steve often had trouble expressing his feelings).
