Book Review: Iced Out
Leighton U (Book 1) by C. E. Ricci
Tumblr media
Source: Google Images
All's fair in hate and hockey.
My path to success never included an enemy as a teammate, especially one as infuriating as Quinton de Haas.
Clawing under my skin is his favorite pastime, only feeding the animosity between us as the years pass.
We’re as completely opposite as two people can be; the golden boy and the black sheep.
Constantly at odds or at each other’s throats.
The only thing we can agree on is hockey is our true love, and we’ll do whatever it takes to come out on top.
I never imagined that drive would lead me to do the unthinkable: falling into bed with my not-so-straight rival.
But athletes are a superstitious bunch, and when our hook-ups lead to victories, we tell ourselves we can’t stop.
Besides, it’s all for the sake of the team, right?
Source: Goodreads (2022)
Believe It or Not, This Was a Very Cute Love Story
Despite being on my radar for so long, I don't know why it took me this long to pick up any one of Ricci's books. It was always a recommendation of one of her books, and what do I do? I go on and find something else to read instead. Oh well. This was a pretty solid start to Ricci's works. I am now interested in her other books.
I forgot why I decided to read this book but whatever it was, I was persuaded almost immediately which was weird because I am not a hockey romance reader. I do read them but once in a few blue moons. So imagine my huge surprise when I actually really enjoyed my time with Iced Out.
The storyline, the characters, the pacing and the writing style were what convinced me that I better be picking up other books by Ricci. Let me first preface this by saying, I never once thought this book was original. It was quite obvious how the story was going to pan out, especially how the breakup in the third act was going to play out. Nevertheless, I was sucked into the book like I was addicted.
One thing I absolutely love about Ricci's writing style (hopefully not for this book only), was the amount of conversation/communication between the main characters. When Oakley and Quinton were rivals or unwilling teammates, the banter was fascinating. When they started their superstition, the level of bonding (through talking) these two had were marvellous. What really did it for me was after the third act, despite being angry, Quinton still allowed Oakley to say what he wanted to say. There was no bullshit like "I don't want to hear any more excuses" or "I have nothing to say to you", etc. I don't know about her other books, but in Iced Out, Ricci knew miscommunication was not going to be it and for that, almost perfection.
The only thing I found lacking was the friends. I was hoping to see more interaction between Oakley and his roommates. I knew Leighton U was a series before I started Iced Out so if you've read enough books, you would know the subsequent books will be people who have appeared in the first book, or be related to people from the first book. Due to that, I really wanted to know the other characters a little more than I did in this book.
All in all, Iced Out is easily one of the top sports romance novels I've ever read. I adore the fact that even though Ricci is a smut author, I did not get smut thrown in my face every other chapter. What can I say? I am the kind of reader who wants plot in such books.
Rating: ★★★★☆

I learned today that a founding member of the Allman Brothers Band, Dickey Betts passed away peacefully in his home in Sarasota, Florida, yesterday following a period of declining health.
Dickey wrote quintessential Brothers songs including “Blue Sky,” “Rambling Man,” “Jessica,” “in Memory of Elizabeth Reed” and many others. His extraordinary guitar playing alongside guitarist Duane Allman created a unique dual guitar signature sound that became the signature sound of the genre known as Southern Rock.
He was passionate in life, be it music, songwriting, fishing, hunting, boating, golf, karate or boxing. Dickey was all in on and excelled at anything that caught his attention.
Betts joins his brothers, Duane Allman, Berry Oakley, Butch Trucks and Gregg Allman, as well as ABB crew members Twiggs Lyndon, Joe Dan Petty, Red Dog, Kim Payne and Mike Callahan in that old Winnebago in the sky touring the world taking their music to all who will listen.
Condolences to his immediate family, Donna, Duane & Lisa, Christy & Frank, Jessica, and Kim.
Play on Brother Dickey, you will be forever remembered and deeply missed.

We’ve lost another one of the original Allman Brothers. Lead and rhythm guitarist Dickie Betts passed away on April 18, 2024. He was the consummate foil to his guitar partner, Duane Allman. In any other band, Dickie Betts would have been an outstanding lead guitarist in his own right. He started out in the shadow of Duane, yet added a different and complimentary style that made the Allman Brothers Band unique. The mastery of Betts and Allman weaving their licks on the live albums At Fillmore East and Eat A Peach is, in my opinion, incomparable in Rock music history. In Gregg Allman’s memoir, My Cross To Bear, he talks about how the band honed their skills by playing constantly. When they were in cites to perform concerts, they would spend their free time playing free shows at local parks. They were, arguably, the tightest jam band in Rock history. (The Tedeschi-Trucks Band, with their Allman Brothers pedigree, may be the next best thing.)
With the untimely death of Duane in 1971 at the age of 24, Betts became the sole guitar player in the band. Reluctant to find a Duane replacement, the band instead added the young and blossoming Chuck Leavell as a piano player to be the foil for Betts. After the death of their bass player and Duane’s kindred spirit, Berry Oakley, they recorded the album Brothers and Sisters, which became the band’s best-selling album. Betts wrote four of the seven songs including their biggest hit, Ramblin’ Man and the FM radio favorite, Jessica. This was when I first saw the band. They played at the now defunct Chicago Stadium on November 1, 1973. (A memorable streak for me as at the tender age of 17, I went to three concerts in three nights; The Moody Blues, Frank Zappa – yes, The Mothers on Halloween, and Allman Brothers Band.) All these years later, I am still going to concerts and music festivals and have already lined up five over the next five months. Yet, after all these years, when I think back to my favorite shows, that 1973 Allman Brothers show still stands out as my all-time favorite.
The Allman Brothers eventually went back to the two-guitar format, first with Warren Haynes and later with Derek Trucks. In the end, Gregg Allman had a falling out with Betts, and the Allman Brothers continued without him until they called it quits in 2014.
With the loss of Duane Allman, Berry Oakley, Butch Trucks, Gregg Allman and now Dickie Betts, drummer Jaimoe is the only surviving member of the original band. With the love I have for this band, I am kicking off the weekend in memory of Dickie Betts with Allman Brothers Band and the Dickie Betts song, In Memory Of Elizabeth Reed.

Question #1, #14, and #30
(do I know the answer to all of these? yes. shhhhh)
1. What do you do for work?
Lovingly throw ginger ale and pretzels at people at various heights above the Earth's surface. And ya know.. can evac 8 different aircrafts in 90 seconds 🫡
14. How tall are you?
5'3" maybe. Idk they made us guess on my permit 😂
30. Have you ever met a celebrity?
At least 6. Of varying degrees of fame. Mostly through cons/m&g
Teen Wolf: Tyler Hoechlin, Ian Bohen, Crystal Reed, JR Bourne, Melissa Ponzio, Linden Ashby, Charlie Carver, Holland Roden, Eddy Mays
Starkid: Brian Holden, Joe Walker, Joey Richter, Lauren Lopez, Brian Rosenthal, Meredith Stepien, Jim Povolo, Dylan Saunders, Jaime Lyn Beatty, Clark Baxtresser
Broadway: Ramin Karimloo
A list of celebrities that various work locations have caused me to interact with: Tyler Oakley, Josh Gad, Mariah Carey, Ricky Martin, Kevin Chamberlin
Celebrities I stared at longingly through a window and missed picking up from Disney by like 30 minutes and will forever be bitter that my less experienced coworkers got to interact directly and the person raved about them and my friend has his personal number because he was the hotel manager: Darren Criss

Beard hair is most commonly removed by shaving or by trimming with the use of a beard trimmer.
If only the area above the upper lip is left unshaven, the resulting facial hairstyle is known as a mustache;
if hair is left only on the chin, the style is a goatee.
Goatee: A tuft of hair grown on the chin, sometimes resembling a billy goat's.
Junco: A goatee that extends upward and connects to the corners of the mouth but does not include a mustache, like the circle beard.
Meg: A goatee that extends upward and connects to the mustache, this word is commonly used in the south east of Ireland.
Van Dyke: a goatee accompanied by a mustache.
Monkey tail: a Van Dyke as viewed from one side, and a Lincoln plus mustache as viewed from the other, giving the impression that a monkey's tail stretches from an ear down to the chin and around one's mouth.
Hollywoodian: a beard with an integrated mustache that is worn on the lower part of the chin and jaw area, without connecting sideburns.
Reed: a beard with an integrated mustache that is worn on the lower part of the chin and jaw area that tapers towards the ears without connecting sideburns.
Royale: a narrow pointed beard extending from the chin. The style was popular in France during the period of the Second Empire, from which it gets its alternative name, the imperial or impériale.
Verdi: a short beard with a rounded bottom and slightly shaven cheeks with a prominent mustache
Muslim beard: Full beard with the mustache trimmed
Soul patch: a small beard just below the lower lip and above the chin
Glitter beard: Beard dipped in glitter.[20][21]
Hulihee: clean-shaven chin with fat chops connected at the mustache.
Friendly mutton chops: long mutton chop-type sideburns connected to a mustache, but with a shaved chin and neck.
Stashburns or the Lemmy: sideburns that drop down the jaw but jut upwards across the mustache, leaving the chin exposed. Similar to friendly mutton chops. Often found in southern and southwestern American culture (see, for example, the Yosemite Sam caricature).
Closed or Tied beard: Mostly seen among modern Sikh youth, this is a kind of full beard tied by using a sticky liquid or Gel and stiffens below the chin.
Oakley beard: Described by Indian makeup artist Banu as "neither a French beard nor a full beard". She used the look for Rajinikanth in Enthiran (2010).
Full: downward flowing beard with either a styled or integrated mustache
Garibaldi: wide, full beard with rounded bottom and integrated mustache
Old Dutch: A large, long beard, connected by sideburns, that flares outward in width at the bottom, without a mustache.
Sideburns: hair grown from the temples down the cheeks toward the jawline. Worn by Ambrose Burnside (the namesake of the style), Isaac Asimov and Carlos Menem.
Jawline beard: A beard that is grown from the chin along the jawline. Chinstrap, chin curtain and brett are all variations of a jawline beard with distinctions being chin coverage and sideburn length.
Chinstrap: a beard with long sideburns that comes forward and ends under the chin.
Chin curtain: similar to the chinstrap beard but covers the entire chin. Also called a Lincoln, Shenandoah, or spade.
Brett: similar to the chin curtain beard, but does not connect to the sideburns.[17]
Neckbeard: similar to the chinstrap, but with the chin and jawline shaven, leaving hair to grow only on the neck. While never as popular as other beard styles, a few noted historical figures have worn this type of beard, such as Nero, Horace Greeley, Henry David Thoreau, William Empson, Peter Cooper, Moses Mendelssohn, Richard Wagner, and Michael Costa.
Circle beard: Commonly mistaken for the goatee, the circle beard is a small chin beard that connects around the mouth to a mustache. Also called a doorknocker.[18]
Designer stubble: A short growth of the male beard that was popular in the West in the 1980s, and experienced a resurgence in popularity in the 2010s.[19]
Sea captain: A rounded, bottom-heavy beard of medium length with short sides that is often paired with a longer mustache.
