Summer Internship Recruitment Series: Charishma Alur
Tumblr media
Name: Charishma Alur
Summer Internship Company: American Express
Brand: US Consumer
Role: Marketing Internship
What did you do before Stern?
I worked at an agency called SaleAMP where I was a Marketing Manager. I helped my clients with their marketing strategies that entailed anything from building their website to managing their social media posts. After three years at SaleAMP, I moved on to work at Dell, Inc. which was headquartered in Austin, Texas. As a Digital Marketing Producer, I worked with Dell’s partner brands, such as Bose and Samsung, to come up with creative marketing strategies that would help drive their sales on Dell’s e-commerce website. I decided to pursue an MBA at Stern to strengthen my quantitative skills that will aid me in more senior level positions within the marketing industry.
What was the most helpful piece of advice you received during the recruiting process?
Learning as much as you can before meeting people from the company can really show how passionate you are about working there. Because the MBA job market is so competitive, you can stand out by knowing the industry and reading up on current news about the company and tailoring your questions to that knowledge. It shows that you care to keep up to date on the company and that you’re interested in having a career with them. You can truly never know enough about the position you’re applying for and what the company stands for.
How did you spend your time preparing for your interviews?
I broke my preparation up into three parts. First, I spent a good amount of time on each company’s website to learn as much as I could about what the company valued and what their objectives were. I also searched for any news articles that spoke to their financials and market outlook to get a sense for how the company was performing and where they were projected to go. Second, I walked down memory lane and recalled the challenges and accomplishments of every job role I held. This came in handy for all the behavioral questions that were asked during my interviews. Lastly, I did many many many mock interviews with my peers and with OCD. In addition, when I was by myself, I would tirelessly answer my responses to practice questions out loud in my bedroom. I know it feels funny at first, but it seriously helped me word my answers more eloquently and my answers started to sound more natural as opposed to rehearsed. My three-step process was clearly time-consuming, but not only was it completely worth it, but it definitely made me more confident going in to the interviews.
What are you looking forward to as a summer intern?
I’m excited for the opportunity to help shape the next generation of products & services for one of the world’s top brands! I hope to use some of the skills I’ve learned at Stern to be a thought-leader and a problem-solver who can blend business, technical, and industry best practices to develop innovative solutions and create best-in-class customer experiences. I’m also looking forward to getting to know the people I will be working with both within Amex and from other schools who will be interning there with me! And last but not least, I am SO looking forward to spending the summer in the city!
What aspect of the company made you want to work there?
After speaking to several Stern alumni who work at American Express, it was clear how Amex not only is a rewarding place to work but also one that provides challenging work with purpose. My interest in the luxury field also attracted me to want to work for a world-class brand and be able to provide the highest level of quality service. If all of that wasn’t reason enough, given their high employee satisfaction ratings and awards recognizing Amex as a great place to work, it’s a no brainer why I want to work there!
What are you looking forward to as an MBA2?
Traveling! My first year was busy with recruiting events and re-learning how to be back in school! I didn’t have much free time to do anything outside of working towards getting a summer internship. As an MBA2, I’m hoping my schedule will be more relaxed and that I’ll not only get to travel the world, but explore New York City too since it’s my new home! I also look forward to being more involved at school and being able to do activities that don’t necessarily have recruiting or networking objectives, like kayaking with the Adventure Club or wine-tasting with the Cellar Club!

“This experience has been amazing for me so far because I’m not one-hundred percent sure what exactly I want to do with my life. Interning at an NGO has allowed me to explore one of several career options. “
pbnatnyu:
Building your career at NYU Prague
I came to Prague knowing absolutely nothing about the Czech Republic, short of what I was taught during the study abroad orientation held in November in Kimmel. It was the best decision I could’ve made for my sophomore spring. Not only did I meet new people and make new friends, but I also rekindled old friendships and became immersed in a culture I would otherwise not have experienced. I learned some Czech and sampled other parts of Europe. I also started to build my career and explore different career paths through an internship.
I’m currently an intern at CEE Bankwatch Network, an NGO that operates in Central Eastern Europe, monitoring energy projects in the area, their financiers, and their ecological impacts. Working at CEE Bankwatch as a Research and Campaigns Intern broadened my horizons. I’ve worked in government before– in fact, I spent my sophomore fall interning at the New York City Department of Buildings. I’ve interned at my father’s startup. I’ve worked as a researcher for an website. I even have a summer job as a lifeguard. But never have I experienced working for an NGO. I’m glad CEE Bankwatch opened up this pathway.
I found out about CEE Bankwatch through NYU, as it was listed as a non-credit internship. A week later, I found myself interviewing for the position. In February, I heard back and was asked when I could start. It’s a great environment to work in. The office is unassuming, on the third floor of a building in Prague 9, a 30 minute tram ride from where I live in Prague 2. It’s filled with plants and quite cozy. The furniture is all wooden, and there are about 15 employees sitting at their desks. It’s quite casual, people are super friendly, it’s international, and everyone wears jeans. I love it.
