looked up an article and read a bit more into it, no laws have been overturned (yet), what happened was they sent some gun cases that relate to the above restrictions down to the lower courts and asked them to reevaluate in light of NYSPA v Bruen. tl;dr big changes are probably coming, but it will be a little while yet

The Opioid Crisis in New York State
New York State is witnessing an epidemic of opioid-related medical emergencies and opioid overdose deaths, stemming from the use of both prescribed and illicit opioids and heroin.
It is critical that New York State uses the full range of medical, psychological, social, and harm reduction methods and treatments to curb this epidemic, reduce harm to individuals and to society, and to treat each person in a dignified and integrated fashion.
The New York State Psychological Association (NYSPA) Division on Addictions was asked to offer their thoughts about the opioid crisis. Recognizing that addictions are complex disorders that are multifactorial in their origin and maintenance, they did a wonderful job offering suggestions for the opioid crisis from a biopsychosocial perspective that include biological/medical, psychological/psychotherapeutic and social interventions.
We are including this in this month’s newsletter because we wholeheartedly agree with these suggestions and wanted to share NYSPA’s work with people who might otherwise not come across it.
The White Paper focuses on the following select recommendations:
Provide evidence-based training and education about substance misuse for medical and mental health professionals and students.
Require prescriber and patient education about the risks of opioid-based pain medications.
Require health care providers to provide referrals to substance use treatment for opioid overdose survivors and patients coming out of emergency department visits, rehabilitation and detoxification facilities.
Integrate medical, psychological services and social interventions.
Offer referrals for non-pharmaceutical, evidence-based interventions for pain management.
Address opioid use in individuals in, and transitioning out, of the criminal justice system.
Respect the importance of a harm reduction framework for the entire continuum of care.
Solving the opioid crisis will not be easy, but we are confident that a multidimensional approach to this problem will not only save the most lives, but will also help bring about the fastest resolution of this epidemic. Here is the link if you want to read more…it’s incredibly comprehensive.

"Every skilled therapist keeps an eye on the suicide gauge. Even when the needle never moves from zero the gauge is never disconnected. The tragic alchemy that turns suffering into suicidal thoughts and feelings and then some suicidal thoughts and feelings into suicidal behavior is too poorly understood to ever be ignored. As Dr. Shane G. Owens, a psychologist who is Board Certified in Cognitive-Behavioral Psychology and Chair, NYS Psychological Association (NYSPA) Suicide Prevention Task Force, told me in email, “Any therapy—no matter how it is delivered—must include suicide risk assessment and management.”"

Besieged by Another Mass Shooting: Virginia Beach, May 31, 2019
June 1, 2019 And yet, another mass shooting in a culture seemingly permeated by increased acts of violence yesterday, May 31, 2019. https://abc7ny.com/virginia-beach-shooting-12-killed-in-shooting-at-municipal-center/5325179/ https://www.washingtonpost.com/local/public-safety/twelve-people-killed-in-shooting-at-virginia-beach-municipal-complex-police-say/2019/06/01/4a264808-845c-11e9-95a9-e2c830afe24f_story.html The investigation is unfolding and, again, society is reminded of violence at our doorstep, a daily occurrence, that occurs in many forms and contexts, in this instance, workplace violence. It was “a senseless and incomprehensible act of violence” (Dave Hansen, City Manager of Virginia Beach). The shooter used a .45-caliber semiautomatic handgun outfitted with a sound suppressor and extended magazines raising the specter once again about gun violence and gun control and passage of gun laws. I offer the usual cautions not to jump to conclusions too quickly and to check the credibility of information as it becomes available and as the investigation progresses. And, heartfelt condolences to all impacted by this tragedy. I have tried to educate the public via my TV shows (a week ago Domestic Violence on 05/23/19; Hate Crimes on 04/25/19; Natural & Human-Caused Tragedies & Disasters on 03/28/19; Sex Abuse on 10/25/19; and will likely revisit again soon) and via workshops, conferences, and writings. Kindly note the further educational effort sponsored primarily by Manhattan Psychological Association and Fordham University at Lincoln Center with several NYSPA Divisions and Regions as co-sponsors via a 3-hour workshop with six panelists on June 23, 2019 to address — at least briefly — this mind-boggling dilemma (“senseless and incomprehensible” per Dave Hansen; “becoming all too familiar” per Governor Northam) that leaves too many questions and aspires to provide more effective solutions (“All too familiar occurrence; “What really can be done?”; “What possibly causes this?” by CNN): Coping with the Many Faces of Violence Roy Aranda, Psy.D., J.D.

Quote
Dr. Leonard Davidman is current President of NYSPA, long-time NYSPA “Media Watchdog,” and former volunteer for StigmaBusters. He was emphatic that “it reinforces stigma.” Their entire marketing program is based on “reinforcing the stigma of psychotherapy” and “trying to make face-to-face practice unacceptable.” His conclusion was that “Talkspace leaders should be ashamed of themselves for marketing their service as a means to avoid stigma as a selling point, especially because their message so powerfully reinforces that stigma. They can market their service in so many other ways.
