Dearest Crow, I've been thinking about Rain's Lake Wife recently.
Do you have any Nyneve thoughts to share? Did Dew ever know her as a water ghoul? Please tell.... leaves a shiny
💙
nyneve lore incoming
ive actually talked about dew's knowledge of her a little previously here! but here's the essential highlights from that:
the elder ghouls may have passed down the knowledge about her, and some, like Water i think, dont. maybe theyre a little selfish about her, feel like theyve been 'chosen' and that everyone else should have to discover her too. with Water (again, Delta, w/e), it was turbulent with the new summonings, the changing of ghouls and even elements. there simply wasnt time to be like 'oh yeah also theres a big tentacle lady in the lake if you want to have a fun time' you know? not his fault . . . . . . Nyneve's def had a relationship with many a ghoul, but it hasnt been linear. it hasnt all been water ghouls either, but i think the interaction of other elements has come and gone throughout time. i havent decided if any of the 'more recent' ghouls beyond the others mentioned have met her, or just know of her . . . . . . Rain had to introduce Dew to Nyneve. once he got over the fact that he'd have to tell everyone else about her, considering hed come home with sucker marks all over with no real logical explanation. i think Mountain is the first one he tells, but Dew is the first one he introduces.
so to answer that question, unfortunately dew never got to meet her when he was a water ghoul. but you know rain goes to him for first dibs, especially after putting two and two together. and dew has a particular . . . thing for tentacles. rain already knew that, considering he has one. but oh. oh. is dew in for it when she gets her hands on him.
funnily enough, i dont know if mist would, uh, fuck with her (unless its a nice lil slimy handy), but i think theyd be mischievous friends, preying on innocent passerbys and snatching ankles for fun haha
something i have been thinking about is a prequel about her life 'before'. ive tumbled around the idea of her actually being human, somehow magically turned into the beginning of the creature we know she is today. something about a traveler during religious prosecution, going from village to village to secretly tempt women and men, but also just live her life.
not witchcraft, though that is what she ultimately is accused of. chased through the town and past the woods, right up to the lake that she currently resides in. maybe they drowned her, maybe she fled from them and couldnt swim. she escapes them that way, but the entities (lucifer, someone else?) saves her soul by morphing it into the fledgling version of her squid-like self.
does she remember her human life? how does she transform into such a creature? these are things i havent worked out yet. nor have i worked out her birth name, nor all the names she chose for herself along the way. but, if i were to write it all, i think id title it 'Maiden of the Mist'
insert copia-esque, self-satisfied 'eh?' here

Tell us MORE about Nyneve Pendragon, please??
@dancingsunflowers-ocs 💖
Yes yes yes! Thank you so much for asking about her!!
Okay so! Nyneve is Arthur's younger half-sister. Uther got re-married after The Great Purge (he never got over Ygraine btw, it was just a politic thing) with the princess of a reign he conquered. Nyneve is born, her mother dies and honestly, Uther, you should ask yourself questions if both your wives died of childbirth, maybe you are the problem here.
Anyway! Some lore! Dragonlords are still a thing, only men, Merlin is still the last one etc etc. But! There is a "female version" (it's actually not, there were also males, they were just less common), very similar, some huge differences, lot of lore, I could stay here ages lmao. Well, Nyneve is one of them. She's born with magic and she's generally everything Uther hates.
Some spoilers, Killgarrah and Aithusa are not the only dragons alive. Nyneve will eventually find some eggs, will raise baby dragons and will become basically the Daenerys Targaryen of Albion and I'm all in for this lmao (she doesn't want the throne tho, she's all in for Arthur becoming King)
Other things are more tbd, like, is Morgana going to be the villain? Am I gonna change things once again? Who knows! Not me!
Oh right! Her plot is not inspired by any arthurian legend but her name is! Nyneve is another name for The Lady Of The Lake. She has nothing to do with that plot but I liked that easter-egg and how the name sounded so sweet and lady-like, when Nyneve is actually the strongest person around, I mean she literally raised and rides dragons, hello?!

💋 What traits do they like in other people? What traits do they not like? + 🎪 What would their favorite ride at an amusement park be? (for lunya and whoever else you'd like!)
[OC QUESTIONS - accepting!] [answered]
i answered these for my arr wol quartet!!!
Tumblr media
💋: lunya looks for compassion and empathy in other people first, and not just through big acts like donating to an orphanage - are they willing to give up small things like taking less food at dinner so others can eat more? how well can they read others’ hurt? are they willing to apologize first? is it something they do naturally or because they want to be kind, or is it because they just want to look good in front of others? acting out of your own self-interest is the worst possible thing you could do when you meet her for the first time, and it’ll soil her impression of you from the get-go. she also cant stand people who hoard their wealth, or think that being born into money means they’re worth more than others
shes also fascinated by people who are knowledgable and passionate about their interests, and gets along well with anyone willing to share stories with her or has a friendly, competitive spirit that can drive them both forward.
🎪: shes actually the person who sits at a table waiting with everyones bags and pays for everyones overpriced gift shop souvenirs sdnsnfdnds if she had to go on a ride she would love ferris wheels (they make her feel tall!)
lunya is more of a carnival games girl i think! shes the kind of person who would somehow beat a rigged game and walk away with a giant plushie she’d have to carry around for the rest of the day. she’d also be one of those people at a test of strength who would break the bell.
my other three kids below the cut!!
Tumblr media
💋: majj is used to being left behind, so he really appreciates people who are patient with his clinginess and can regularly express affection for him. he doesnt talk about it often but he really values people who are more level-headed than he is, because he knows hes too impulsive and wild, and he also knows it wouldnt work too well if he was with someone too similar to him.
he has issues with gridania as a whole and wouldnt date anyone from the citystate, and would probably not get along with gridanians in general unless they explicitly say they dont approve of its traditions either.
🎪: he would love love love drop towers and pendulum rides and rollercoasters with REALLY steep drops! the boy just lives on the edge and genuinely thinks he has nine lives to spare. he’s horrible at carnival games and they’d have to put a ban on him after almost taking someone’s eye out with a dart
Tumblr media
💋: nyneve… is the kind of person who would fall in “love” with anyone who is remotely nice to her. or just anyone, in general, considering her most infamous pursuit was estinien. if she actually put thought into what she wants from a partner instead of chasing down every attractive guy she sees, she would want someone who appreciates and can keep up with all her eccentricities. she doesnt want to date anyone who doesnt have a spark to match hers.
🎪: nyneve would go on EVERY RIDE, even the baby ones, and she would love every single one. she and majj would line up for kart races with a bunch of kids and they’d squabble over who won for an hour, even if the answer is “neither of them.” she would probably have a soft spot for carousels though, cause theyre very romantic and cute.
Tumblr media
💋: theo wants a BIG, STRONG HUSBAND who can LIFT LIVESTOCK and also recite 24-stanza love poems to him and knit baby socks. hes the team mom and likes taking care of others, but hes old enough to be a Functioning Adult who can take care of himself and would want to be with someone who is the same. he wouldnt want to be smothered or be with anyone who sees his gentle nature as some kind of weakness.
🎪: theo likes... the chew chew train at disneyland? oh god wait i just looked it up and they got rid of it, i change my mind, he likes the winnie the pooh ride now (thats probably still around right???) hes too old and delicate to enjoy anything faster than that sdnndfsnfsd but the others could force him to go on the scary rollercoasters with them and the whole time his face would be like this

RJ’s notes Part 77 by Shanbear16
A visit to the James O. Rigney, Jr. archives
SOURCE
A few weeks ago I was visiting family in Myrtle Beach for the first time. I figured since we were only a few hours away from Charleston I would take a trip down there to visit the College of Charleston’s James Oliver Rigney, Jr. archives. I’ve been a massive WoT fan since around 1998 and was active in online fan communities for a while. Visiting the archives was sort of like a bucket list thing for me. Unfortunately, they didn’t allow any photos (I think that restriction drops sometime in the 2030s). However, they did have a great display put up in honor of the TV show so I was able to take pictures of that. I was also able to take notes! I know there have been a couple of other fans who have posted about what they found in the archives, but I’m hoping I found a couple of things that haven’t been mentioned yet. I’m just going to kind of bullet list some things others might find interesting. Things in quotes are as they were written in the files.
In the plot summary circa 1984-1989 Egwene is spelled “Eguene”
Speaking of different names, Rand was originally Rhys al’Thor The Dragon Reborn, The Hammer
There were a lot of notes and prophecies from Le Morte D’Arthur (which is Sir Thomas Malory’s 15th century telling of the King Arthur story) including a note about “sangreal” being an alternate name for The Holy Grail.
There were a bunch of notes on Arthurian lore in general
There were also notes from The White Goddess (a book by Robert Graves published in 1948 that draws a lot on Irish and Welsh mythology. As far as I can tell Graves tries to connect poetry and mythology together somehow. I’m not sure as I’m unfamiliar with this book). Jordan made a specific note of the name Kadsuane from the book.
Also from the outline: “If the power wielder who first finds al’Thor is at some point made into a crone by the Powers of Sa’khan, she will be a perfect precursor for the hag in the Maiden-Nymph-Hag trio. al’Thor would be the means of her rescue, but not in the same book in which the disaster strikes her.” I found this really interesting because it highlights where Jordan initially wanted this story to go
He also had a note to himself asking if the number of ages should be 7 (“as in so many legends and the bible”) or 9 which would be “a number of magical properties.”
The outline also names “Nyneve Bayal” and “Thom Merilyn”
In his original description of Emond’s Field he noted that the stones from the quarry near the town were used more than 1,000 years before. Also, the ancient city that existed was not noted as Manetheran but as “Etheran”
In the original outline I couldn’t find any mention of Mat or Perrin.
The original name for angreal was “Cris”
Ogier was initially spelled “ogyr.” Speaking of Ogyr, they were initially shorter than men. They were primarily lumbermen and miners.
Lews Therin Telamon? Nah, he was originally called Jaran Telamon!
In Jordan’s notes on books 2-6 the story was originally going to go in a totally different place. Rand was going to be shipwrecked on the coast of “a blight” and he wanders. He becomes Morgase’s lover for a time (!!!!). This is what makes Galad bitter. Rand was to be taken prisoner by “the Queen of the land where he was raised, Elyn’s mother. She wants to kill him but Elyn convinces her not to." Rand is instead blinded by hot irons and turned loose to wander as a beggar. There was a note that he would regain his sight later.
Sea Folk= “oriental/Polynesian” people in appearance
Stone of Tear was originally “Stone of Stair”
“Parts of the Arthurian Legend will be blended with Norse myth, Greek myth, and others.”
From the Memory of Light outline: a reminder to himself that “Dragon is one with the land,” “eclipse should be a central scene in the Last Battle,” and a reference to the Karaethon Cycle told by Thom in The Great Hunt chapter 26 to Rand.
Egwene was to become pregnant!
I can’t remember if this was in the book or not. Mat was to go to Tar Valon. Egwene summons Siuan. Siuan retrieves the Horn of Valere from a secret hiding spot in the study and gives it to Mat.
Aludra’s cannon was originally 3 miles long. RJ made a note that this might possibly be excessive. I personally found that note to be hilarious.
A continuity note from the 1980s says bonding is sex specific (note from me: I think he means gender here?). Men can bond women and women can only bond men. Sooooo clearly this is something that changed!
Warder weapon skill and tracking ability is not given via bonding - this is a skill the warder inherently has.
Jordan considered the name Garad Winden Marsan for Artur Hawkwing.
Here’s another one about the Ogier - there were to be tales that Ogier possess boots that allow one of them to cover ten leagues at a stride in the ways. “Jarad Farstrider (of the story)” supposedly stole (or came in possession of ) a pair of these boots.
Parry Coomb was going to be the closest village to Emond’s Field.
The following may be the absolute best thing I read in Jordan’s notes. I loved it so much I wrote the whole thing word for word:
“How many traditional fantasy elements do we have? If so, under what conditions, and in what manifestations? Giants? Elves? Dwarves? Trolls? Ogres? (no fucking unicorns, that’s for damned sure!) Dragons? Beasts of mystery and magic? Sentient animals? Sentient plants? Spirits? Gods?
No Gods
No spirits
No dragons
Beasts of mystery? Certainly, creatures of and creations of the Power
Trolls:Trollocs
Ogres:Ogyr
Giants: The Green Man might qualify. Others? Most likely not"
I went through stacks and stacks of world building notes (an example of this is a list of what each nation calls The Dark One). I also came across a stack of papers about 4 inches tall of questions for Maria Simons (continuity editor and research assistant for Team Jordan) with a few answers that she provided.
So that’s everything I took notes on! It was really neat seeing his world building and original ideas for the series. Every now and then I saw a personal note in there including a note about taking Harriet’s car to the mechanic!
I will say the librarians and staff in Special Collections were lovely (even if they had to talk me down from 45 boxes I asked to be pulled down to 20). I’m a librarian who has had some training in archives which I mentioned when I made my appointment, but nothing I looked at required special handling so I think if anyone is interested in visiting they need only make an appointment!

Wheel of Time Episode 3 Liveblog!
Nyneve: certified badass. Again, why are she and Egwene not our main characters??
That wound still seems like it hasn't been properly cleaned out, I don't care what magic herbs you shoved in there.
Roommate: 🎶Some More Portentous Dreams!🎶
This country has SO MANY conveniently endless fields for them to run through, and I definitely have Thoughts about the weird emptiness of the landscape, but that's another post.
I feel like more fantasy songs should be like actual folk songs: fun and filthy and/or full of booze. People in a bar don't want to hear a sad song about ancient history! They want some light entertainment.
I like Mat's pragmatism but it's undercut by him being kind of a terrible person. I'm sympathetic to him wanting to get back to his sisters, but being too lazy to do actual work? Come on.
Unsurprisingly, the evil poisoned troll wound has not healed. Infection!!
Aaand Mat's gonna go steal a thing, like a dumbass.
I actually like this gleeman. I wanna know his story.
Ooooooh, betrayal!! Damn, literally every woman in this show is cooler than our heroes, even the evil ones.
So we learn the name of the previous Dragon: Ishamael. That is... an extremely Hebrew name for a setting without Judaism.
Ah, the classic "we have to break the world to save it" argument.
Thanks, gleeman! I love how every rando they run into is like, fully plugged into the mythology and lore and the protagonists have apparently never heard a single folktale or bit of history in their entire lives. 😂
Ahhhh damn, we gotta get help from the Murder Squad of Aes Sedai. :/
Overall: definitely more engaging than the previous two. I like having the crew split up and getting a little bit more character development. I liked seeing Egwene experiment with her magic. I am kinda iffy on the whole Travelers situation. Apparently they're based on Irish Travelers and not the Romani, but... I dont' really trust Jordan to have written them in any kind of culturally sensitive way. Case in point: mostly white people with dreads is not a great look.

what are the relationships b/w hypotheca bloom theory cast like?👀
EYES EMOJI
yuzu and holiday: good friends! they met very recently but you know when you meet someone and you just like. Instantly Vibe?? thats them! holiday is squatting at his grandpa's house but he comes over to yuzu's apartment like every day. they're working together to figure out wtf is going on w copegods in this city and also holiday is trying to dodge the dragonet syndicate
nyneve and holiday: nyneve is kinda wary of him. holiday thinks she's a riot. nyneve also interns (????? its fine) with the dragonet syndicate, which holiday doesn't know
nyneve and yuzu: they're not that far apart in age, maybe 5 or so years, so their relationship is less uncle/niece and more older brother/younger sister. nyneve looks after yuzu a fair amount though sdjfklsgj. she's been trying to get his front door fixed for months but he doesn't care about it because he likes climbing in and out via the fire escape
char and holiday: char found out that holiday swallowed one of the pieces of god and is after him in order to take it out and destroy it. holiday has no idea who she is specifically or that she knows he ate a piece of god, but he knows that there's been a witch collecting copegods and that it was probably her that broke into his grandpa's house first (it was) which probably was what allowed the syndicate to get in (it was). char was friends with holiday's grandpa. char and holiday run into each other a lot at babel but holiday has no idea it's her
char and nyneve: nyneve's other part time job is at babel (cafe and also bar at night), where char also works! char only works there when it's a bar and nyneve usually only works there when it's a cafe, but sometimes their shifts cross over. nyneve things char is really cool. char lets nyneve follow her around and chatter while they set up
char and yuzu: char still hasn't put together that holiday is camping out at yuzu's place a lot.....a fair amount of their interactions are at babel, but they seem to run into each other a lot around the town and it always seems important when they do. their main connection to each other is through holiday, but char recently saw yuzu having a vision and wants to know more. yuzu is intimidated by char's general coldness and doesn't talk to her very much
char and lottie: oh girls......i hate that i made these two up as a joke and immediately got very invested in both of them GSDGKLJF. char and lottie are like institutional enemies, since char is out to destroy all the copegods in order to prevent god from reforming and lottie is out to collect and assemble them. neither of them has ever actually knowingly met the other: lottie only knows char as the witch who's stealing god pieces and char only knows lottie as the syndicate member who's stealing god pieces. their dynamic is very fun for me because on paper they absolutely hate each other but they've like accidentally hung out a few times. each one finds the other really interesting but if they ever found out who the other was it would probably be on sight
char and stephen: OH ENEMIES. char knows who stephen is and stephen knows Of char but doesn't know who she is. they are active vitriolic enemies and will stop at nothing to take each other down should the opportunity arise
stephen and lottie: DOTING UNCLE AND SPOILED NIECE.....even though they're probably two of the most powerful people in the syndicate they have very little to do with each other when it comes to syndicate activities and they don't talk about work very much generally, but stephen gives lottie basically anything she wants and dotes on her constantly, and lottie loves him (for more reasons than just because he spoils her sdjkglsjfskl they have a very genuine family bond)
stephen and holiday: stephen and holiday's grandpa definitely had A Thing [Eyes Emoji] back in the day but their differences on god led to a falling-out that led to the formation of the dragonet syndicate (on stephen's side) and a retreat into reclusiveness (on holiday's grandpa's side). they never spoke to each other after the division but they left a huge impact on each other. this is why it took the syndicate until char broke into holiday's grandpa's house to raid it, because it was so heavily guarded against stephen and his people. this means that stephen's relationship with holiday is extremely fraught (not helped by the fact that he has some features in common with his grandpa) (he was dead anyway, a ghost...) and he has a lot of complicated feelings about holiday and about the copegod that holiday ate. holiday has no idea who stephen is in an actual capacity, just that he's the head of the dragonet syndicate (he knows what stephen looks like though). he has no idea about any of the Lore
stephen and yuzu: stephen has heard thru the grapevine that yuzu has visions and is deeply intrigued by this. is currently following up. yuzu has no idea who this man is
holiday and lottie: these two have a long-running rivalry from when they were at babel and got into an aggressive bidding war over the last chocolate croissant. holiday started it. lottie finished it. then she barely ate the croissant. holiday has never forgiven her for this. every time they're in the cafe at the same time you get the sense that they're about 2 seconds away from throwing hands. the dragonet syndicate suspects that holiday was the one who took the copegod out of holiday's grandpa's house but have no proof and have no idea that holiday fucking ate it; due to poor internal communication lottie doesn't know this. holiday currently feels like he recognizes lottie but can't remember from where; he knows a lot of faces from the dragonet syndicate but lottie's doesn't immediately ping as one of them. this is because lottie doesn't go to a lot of gatherings that the syndicate show up to (holiday does, specifically to keep an eye on them)
lottie and yuzu: peak vibing. lottie got a tip from her uncle to check out this dude who has visions, found him, and was aghast to find out that he's good friends with holiday, her enemy. she doesn't hold this against him, partially because of syndicate business and partially because he seems cool. they'll hang out at babel and chat for long periods of time and lottie will pay for both of their drinks. yuzu doesn't mind the company and thinks that holiday and lottie's rivalry is funny
lottie and nyneve: don't really know each other personally, just by sight bc nyneve works cafe shifts and lottie loves the cafe, but lottie tips well. oh also i guess since nyneve interns (!?!??) at the syndicate (?!?!?!?!?!?) they might recognize each other from there! they haven't progressed much past small talk
nyneve and stephen: thats her boss, technically. he vaguely recognizes her

formerly: cavallon NAME: Llwch Llawwynnauc or Lancelot du Lac SPECIES: human ORIENTATION: bisexual GENDER: male
APPEARANCE
Brown hair, and gray wolfish eyes and slender build.
face claims: timothee chalamet {teen}, kim rossi stuart {adult}
RELATIONSHIPS
FAMILY: Nyneve {adopted mother}
SIGNIFICANT OTHER: Arthur Pendragon, Guenevere
CHILDREN: Galahad
PERSONALITY
When he first joined Arthur’s army he was called Arthur’s dog because of the loyalty he showed his master. And such a description fits Lancelot to a T, he’s gives his loyalty and affection rarely but when he does it is absolute.
NEED TO KNOWS
Culturally and religiously, Lancelot, is a Celtic Pagan having been raised on Avalon.
He was the only child on Avalon which is why he can be fairly standoffish.
When he left the island he was blessed/cursed with a geas or Tynged that he could only love/serve the ruler who defeated him. Both Arthur and Guenevere did so albeit in different ways.
note: a geas/tynged in Celtic lore is a requirement that grants power/protection to whoever one is granted too as long as they follow it.
Rescuing Guenevere and abandoning Arthur violated that tynged leading to Lancelot’s death.

First off, let’s admire the introductory lore that you have for your two factions! I really like how you balanced concrete info about where they are with the more cryptic prose. I followed the links to Nyneve and Nashe and their bios made me uber curious about what’s going on with Xebec. Why is she queen if she’s a fisher? Is Nashe a literal siren? I have so many questions, and that morsel of lore really drew me in.
also the art you have is really nice :D
I adore Malykris’ vibrant colors! She really looks like a tropical dweller with those colors sending me danger, no touch! vibes. The art of her as a mer is super cute and I’m just getting mental images of her and her pufferfish friend going around being awesome.
I’m getting pretty mesmerized by the bits of lore I’m seeing. Francis is an airship captain. Malykris is a mer. Nyneve is the rightful queen of... something? It’s all very mysterious and my curiosity is getting the better of me. I love the steampunk-y vibes from hot tamale Francis. That copper makes him look luminous and I am a sucker for rich earthy colors, so it’s impossible for me not to love him.
The plague look on Ash is goals. She’s extremely spooky with the skeleton and all, but there’s something very tasteful and unique about the way you’ve cultivated her plague appearance. The first thing I noticed was how you used scales for an injured/decayed look(?). The current on her wings make me think of how leather kinda gets faded from the sun over time. Bleached bones and faded scales. I kind of want to fight her even tho I’d be lucky to make it to the curb if she didn’t... y’know, squash me.
Anyways, I was drawn in by your lore and I love how you’ve dressed your dragons! Thanks for letting me snoop!

Brief Overview of Clan Hierarchies
The Mews are also the base of operations for the members of Iacere. Not quite a true clan, it is rather a hunting pack made up solely of the children of Moro and Nimue. They rove the entirety of Suqutra’s territory, handling threats to those that live within. While they follow the laws established by their mother, they hold their own in a higher esteem, and if they had to choose between them it would not be Moro’s that won. Although they all consider themselves to be of equal rank, the youngest sister Manni is most often to be found and their island estate, coordinating the efforts of her siblings and accepting the petitions for help from their clan mates.
On a slightly smaller island to the south of the Mews is the home of the Water clan Xebec. Led by their queen Nyneve, they were exiled from their former territory years ago. Nyneve was quick to form an alliance with her plague neighbors, hoping to avoid war between them. The seafood they bring to the market at the Mews is always in demand, but while they have settled into the alliance easily Nyneve is always wary of her larger neighbors, and keeps many secret close to her chest.
The SAS Harpy is a small airship captained by the far Francis, and he and his crew are a common and mostly welcome sight at the trading post. They roam the skies of Sornieth untethered and unchecked, and will take to the skies for battle only slightly less readily then for trade.
The mirror Herne has carved a lair just over the border of Shadow territory, and the members of Iacere stumbled upon him quite by accident. How the Ice dragon came to be there no one knows, and if pressed for what clan he belongs to his answer is always only “Widheer.” That this is also apparently the name of the wendigo that lairs near him is slightly concerning to some member of Suqutra, but as neither have ever made moves against them Moro concerns herself with him only when she browses his wares at market. He always has a fine collection of pelts for trade.
There are also several loners who occasionally stumble through the territories of these clans, but they pay them very little mind.

𝔴𝔦𝔩𝔩 𝔶𝔬𝔲 𝔰𝔭𝔦𝔩𝔩 𝔱𝔥𝔢 𝔴𝔦𝔫𝔢 / 𝔱𝔬 𝔰𝔲𝔪𝔪𝔬𝔫 𝔱𝔥𝔢 𝔡𝔦𝔳𝔦𝔫𝔢?
vocalist: Estelle (quintessence) 1st cellist: Naia (water) 2nd cellist: Neve (water) pianist: Artemis (earth/air hybrid)
The chamber ghoulettes are older than the Clergy itself. The four--two friends and two sisters--came together to form the still running quartet. To honor Lucifer. To set a soundtrack for the budding church. Even today, they are highly respected and revered as the chamber ensemble for mass and special events.
The group is elusive--mysterious and private. They prefer to keep to themselves, residing in their own quarters on the abbey grounds. Forming a little commune of their own, as they have for centuries.
Copia, of course had become familiar with them, first as a watcher, and then as a leader. He respected their privacy, their hertiage with the church he now leads. Would never ask too much of them. But with the upcoming movie, he decided it was time they should be officially honored alongside their modern musical counterparts. To highlight the ancestry, the ones who came before them all.
Estelle and Artemis were both born topside. Drawn to the small group of mortals and demons forming a new community in the countryside. Naia and Neve, sisters, younger and older respectively, were refugees of sorts. Escaping from their nearby village after being hunted by invading humans. Finding the church by accident, but inadvertently drawn to its bubble of magick. Finding their shared love for music as instruments evolved and changed over the centuries. Artemis' first instrument was actually the harp, as the first piano wouldn't be constructed until many many years after her cohorts' cellos. Estelle melded them all together, bringing words to their melodies.
The rest, as they say, is history.

Just wanted to say I absolutely LOVE Lady of the Lake and I've reread it so many times that I should be lowkey ashamed haha BUT
I'm also very curious about Nyneve's interactions with other ghouls like Delta or Dew. How did Dew find her?
You can absolutely take this as an opportunity to ramble about it if you want :)
okay so. i admit that technically the ghoul i call Water in my fic i guess is Delta? im terribly bad at tracking who's who in the water ghoul 'lore'. but Terzo called his bass player before Mist 'Water' so thats what i went with. so please call him whatever you'd like lmao.
for anyone who needs a refresher, this is sort of all i've established about Nyneve's past interactions w/ghouls or otherwise:
Uh, how long has it been? Since you’ve met a ghoul, I mean. Rain isn’t sure what to do with himself—what to do with his hands, his limbs, any of it. He dangles in front of her like a worm on a lure, and he supposes he is one, in a way. A slice of life outside the murky waters she inhabits. But he knows he’d be her catch of the day, not the other way around.
Many years, Nyvene says wistfully. I can sense those who venture into the water at any depth, as well as those close to the shore. But the ones who seem most closely aligned to you have never traveled as far as yourself. They were surface dwellers. Rain gives her a confused look. Not all are drawn to the depths, and that is perfectly fine for a being such as myself. But I did begin to wonder who would come next.
Dew had been telling the truth, then. Who was before me?
His name was simply Water. He was quite robust in his search, perhaps a little impatient. But he was kind to me. So I cannot fault him too much. She seems wistful, reminiscent. Rain realizes he doesn’t know much about the water ghouls before him and Dewdrop, let alone any of the ghouls that came before their current pack.
How many before him?
Many, she says simply.
Rain swallows, more bubbles escaping his gills. How, uh—how old are you, exactly?
Hm, age is a funny thing. That can’t be good. I have existed for a long time, longer than your congregation.
So, we didn’t, um, create you?
No, my child. Though, the dark magick running more frequently through these lands has been . . . refreshing, to put it simply.
You’ve always been here? In this lake, I mean.
Well, as long as I can remember, yes. She chuckles.
so, you'll notice, and as a gentle reminder, Dew and Mist did not interact with her. to me, they are not a deep-water alignment as Rain is. that's not to say Dew never meets her. because he does. but he didn't interact with her prior to Rain.
i think water ghouls, and ghouls/demons in general, have more specified alignments within the elements they are 'made' of/from. just water itself can be saltwater, freshwater, deep sea, rivers/streams, storms, ice, and things of the like.
so not all of them will have desired to go to the bottom of the lake (i think its pretty deep, think some of the deeper american great lakes depth despite its overall size). the elder ghouls may have passed down the knowledge about her, and some, like Water i think, dont. maybe theyre a little selfish about her, feel like theyve been 'chosen' and that everyone else should have to discover her too. with Water (again, Delta, w/e), it was turbulent with the new summonings, the changing of ghouls and even elements. there simply wasnt time to be like 'oh yeah also theres a big tentacle lady in the lake if you want to have a fun time' you know? not his fault.
so Nyneve's def had a relationship with many a ghoul, but it hasnt been linear. it hasnt all been water ghouls either, but i think the interaction of other elements has come and gone throughout time. i havent decided if any of the 'more recent' ghouls beyond the others mentioned have met her, or just know of her.
certainly there'd be urban legends passed around amongst humans that live in the surrounding areas, so they may have heard about something in passing. esp if any of those humans happened to become siblings of the church. but humans that do know of her have never truly known who she is, and mainly just call her varelse, creature. a monster.
the poem at the end you may have noticed uses her real name, Nyneve. so we can assume someone more personally familiar with her wrote it. scribbled it in some tome somewhere about local myths and legends, or historical drafts about the abbey itself.
she's very mysterious and not even i know everything about her, haha! dark magick gone rougue, some creature that crawled up from the depths, or something created by some long forgotten god.
all this to say, Rain had to introduce Dew to Nyneve. once he got over the fact that he'd have to tell everyone else about her, considering hed come home with sucker marks all over with no real logical explanation. i think Mountain is the first one he tells, but Dew is the first one he introduces.
i really appreciate that you enjoy LOTL so much; apologies for taking a little bit to answer this, but thanks for stopping by xx
if you havent already read about Nyneve and Rain, and this sparks your interest, you can do so here:
