Brief Personality: Aditya is the embodiment of the sun. Hot headed, bold, dramatic, warm. He is one of the only starlings that has never reincarnated so he is a history keeper of sorts. He is very protective of the ones he loves, however he has never been truly human like the others, He has a less of an understanding on his own and other peoples emotions. He oftentimes does or says things that make the others look at him in complete confusion. But he is an alien after all, cut him a little slack for not understanding human social conventions.
Brief Backstory:
Aditya is the only one who still remembers it all. He’s the only one who has never reincarnated. Still in the same body he always has been. The moon once told him, that he needed to be.. the storyteller.. to keep their history even when the others could not.. The sun kept these words in their head for.. a very long time..
Aditya remembers life and death. Aditya remembers being born and given unimaginable power. Aditya remembers all the other starlings. He remembers “Pluto”, he remembers Kita. He remembers falling in love with the first human, along with the moon. Kita was extraordinary she created animals and music and sex and soup.. Until.. she was “accidentally killed”…
The Sun knew it wasn’t an accident. He knew “Pluto” had it out for her.. but the moon calmed him down.. When “Pluto” convinced the other starlings to reincarnate. The sun and moon refused.. and “Pluto” killed the moon for it… The sun and “Pluto” had a violent battle, before Pluto striked him and sent him blazing down to earth. “Pluto” thought the sun was dead. But he wasn’t..
The sun formed a massive crater in the earth, as he stared up into the sky he decided that he was going to destroy this stupid worthless planet. If the moon was gone, if Kita was gone. Then what was the point? He goes to summon his magic and de- Ow.
The sun looks down and his leg, is badly injured.. he.. can barely move… He tries everything to try and move be just.. can’t.. the pain is unbearable.. Until. He saw a human.. a woman.. she slid down into the crater and slowly approached him. He hissed and growled at her, trying to make himself big and scary to scare the human away from him. But she is unphased..
She speaks to him softly and notices the injury on his leg. She begins to bandage him up. She explains to him that she is a doctor and midwife of sorts for the royal palace.. The woman picks the starling up in her arms, and takes him to her home. Where she gives him a warm bed and some soup.. She asks the starling for his name and he said he doesn’t really have one..
She names him Aditya.. after the sun.. because he’s this big glowing ball of fire and light.. Aditya stays with the woman, but he says he will leave once he is no longer injured.. Months go by.. he.. begins to fake being injured.. of course though the woman saw through the starlings little trick.. She tells him that he can stay.. that she would take care of him..
..he accepts.. gaining a mother.. even if she is just a silly human.. Aditya, learns a lot of things from Eeshani. She teaches him how to cook, and how to heal, she teaches him empathy for smaller creatures than him..
Eventually.. Aditya.. creates a new form.. based on Eeshani.. a human one.. He looks exactly like her child.. and now he able to go with her to market or to accompany her to help her at the palace.. He really enjoys this.. especially because he gets to hang out with the princess.. Diya.. Diya was around the same age as him in human years.. they both got along together.. even if she was a stupid human..
Diya and Aditya became quick playmates. The two of them would constantly be running around the castle together. She would show him cool animals and stuff and they would play pretend.
The king and queen didn’t mind this. Eeshani was a well trusted figure in the palace and her son was more than welcome around their child.. The two of them grew up together. Turning into teenagers.. This is when the problems started.
Because Diya and Aditya were now no longer “children” (because this is like the 1000’s- and teenagers are adults for some ungodly reason.) The king no longer wants a boy around his daughter. He forbids him from seeing her in their usual contexts.
Aditya- does not understand this.. he gets incredibly upset.. he just wants to be with his friend.. but even his mother forbids him fearing retaliation from the king. So. He does what any sensible person would do. Sneak into the princess’s room at night without their parents permission. They would talk for hours until the sunrise, then he would sneak back into his own bed..
One thing though.. lead to another.. soon those platonic feelings turned to romantic ones.. and that soon lead to kissing… and that lead to making out.. and that lead to…
The.. Princess fell pregnant…
And you… can imagine…the king and Queen were… not happy.. They tried to get who did this to her out of the princess but she refused to tell.. not wanting to hurt Aditya.. Her parents were outraged.. punishing the poor girl to her room..
Aditya.. however.. came forward and took responsibility.. and.. despite the monarch’s anger at him… they did like Aditya… and they also did not want to lose their doctor.. so.. they allowed him to marry the princess, becoming a prince in the process.. Hooray! Execution avoided!
Eeshani and Aditya had a girl. And as they turned into adults had a few other children as well.. Aditya actually quite enjoyed his role as prince. He tried to do as much good as possible, giving money to the poor, making sure people were okay.
There was a war going on between the surrounding kingdoms. The king had it under control for the most part, until.. he didn’t.. A neighboring kingdom took over, completely devastating everything, including capturing the royal family.. Aditya’s mother, the king and queen, Diya, his children… everyone… He was the only one who couldn’t die.. solely because he was a starling… no blade would pierce his flesh…
He stared at the ashes of his kingdom before him… and he.. felt nothing but anger… he felt so powerless Aditya went into a hibernation. He imprisoned himself in Kanchenjunga, blocking the entrance to a small cave with a rock.. and he just slept…
Until.
Someone found him.
An old friend.. Darrius, “Pluto”… He brought him gifts and wine, and they just talked.. They talked about the past, the world… Darrius showed him something interesting.. a divine birthright that the starlings have.. the strings.. The ability to control everyone and everything..
Darrius offered a deal.. He was weak.. his power was slowly burning out.. he.. might die.. if Aditya becomes.. his.. puppet of sorts… he can help Aditya get revenge.. to give him control.. he can rule the world with him by his side.. And Aditya… accepted…in a heartbeat…

Okay this is something I *struggle* with. I live in NYC and in my last job worked largely with people living in the lowest-income neighborhoods of this city. Many of my clients didn't have stable housing and some of them were sleeping rough. At that job I made about $40k/yr.
I have since finished my master's and gotten a different job, where I am paid just over $70k/year. That's a big difference. It's enough that I don't need a roommate! It's enough that I can order takeout kind of whenever I want. I am not living paycheck to paycheck and I'm able to both save some AND have disposable income. I feel rich.
Comrades, I am NOT rich. According to HUD, I am "moderate income" - about 70% of the area mean income for a single person.
We live in a world which has seen nearly unimaginable wealth disparity develop. If you want to really talk about who is rich, you need to understand that barring situations of inheritance, no one making 5 figures is rich. Do you own multiple houses? Multiple cars? Do you own a watch which cost 5 figures? No? You're not, comparatively, rich. Does your net worth fluctuate significantly based on the stock market (if so you're probably wealthy), or does your net worth depend purely on your paycheck and spending (most of us).
This website is too mobile focused these days. Reblog and tell me what your desktop/laptop background is.

10 Proven Ways to Get Affordable Lead Paint Inspection in NYC – Stay Safe & Save Big!
If you live in or own property in New York City, Brooklyn, the Bronx, or Queens, and your building was constructed before 1978, chances are lead-based paint was used. Over time, deteriorating paint can release harmful lead dust, which poses serious health risks—especially to children, pregnant women, and pets.
Getting a lead-based paint inspection is crucial for homeowners, landlords, and tenants, but cost concerns often prevent people from taking action. The good news? You don’t have to spend a fortune!
In this guide, we’ll share 10 proven ways to get an affordable lead paint inspection in NYC, so you can stay safe and compliant without breaking the bank.
1. Take Advantage of NYC’s Free & Low-Cost Lead Testing Programs
New York City has strict lead paint safety regulations, and local agencies offer assistance programs to help property owners and renters access affordable lead inspections. The NYC Department of Housing Preservation & Development (HPD) and HUD provide funding and grants to help cover the cost of lead testing and hazard reduction.
How to Access These Programs?
Call 311 and ask about NYC’s subsidized lead inspection services.
Visit the NYC HPD website to check your eligibility.
If you’re a low-income homeowner, landlord, or tenant with children under six, you may qualify for free or low-cost lead paint assessments.
2. Choose a Certified Lead-Based Paint Inspector with Affordable Rates
Not all lead inspectors charge the same rates. Some companies offer special discounts, and others provide budget-friendly packages for multiple properties. To ensure your results are legally valid, always choose an EPA-certified lead-based paint inspector in NYC.
Tips to Get the Best Price:
Contact at least 3-5 local lead inspectors for price comparisons.
Check for seasonal discounts (winter months are typically cheaper).
Look for companies offering bulk inspection discounts for multiple units.
A little research can help you save money while staying compliant with NYC’s lead safety laws.
3. Book an XRF Lead Inspection for Faster & Cost-Effective Testing
When scheduling a lead paint test, ask if the company offers X-ray fluorescence (XRF) testing. This non-invasive method provides instant results without damaging walls or surfaces, making it more affordable than traditional lead dust testing.
XRF lead testing is ideal for landlords, homebuyers, and real estate investors who need quick yet accurate lead inspections before making decisions.
4. Schedule Inspections in Off-Peak Seasons for Lower Prices
Like many home inspection services, lead paint testing prices tend to increase during peak seasons (spring and summer). If you want a better deal, consider scheduling your inspection in winter (January – March) when demand is lower.
Money-Saving Tip:
Some lead inspection companies offer early-bird discounts or off-season promotions—always ask before booking!
5. Bundle Lead Paint, Mold, and Asbestos Testing for a Discount
Many older NYC buildings not only have lead-based paint risks but also mold growth and asbestos contamination. Instead of booking multiple inspections separately, you can save money by bundling lead, mold, and asbestos testing with the same company.
Why Bundle Inspections?
✅ Reduces overall inspection costs ✅ Ensures a comprehensive home safety assessment ✅ Helps with rental property compliance and home purchases
6. Check If Your Insurance Covers Lead Paint Testing
Some homeowner’s insurance policies may offer partial reimbursement for lead paint hazard testing. If you’re a landlord, you may also qualify for tax deductions when paying for lead paint inspections as part of property maintenance.
How to Save More?
Ask your insurance provider about lead hazard coverage.
Keep receipts and inspection reports for potential tax write-offs.
7. Work with Local Lead Inspectors Instead of National Chains
Large national home inspection companies often charge higher fees, while smaller, NYC-based lead inspectors provide more affordable pricing.
Where to Find Affordable Local Inspectors?
Search for top-rated lead paint inspectors near you.
Read Google Reviews and Yelp to find affordable, certified professionals.
Ask local landlords or real estate agents for referrals.
Going local can help you get a high-quality inspection at a fraction of the cost.
8. Renters Can Request Landlords to Pay for Lead Testing
If you're renting an older apartment in NYC, your landlord is legally required to ensure the unit is lead-safe, especially if a child under 6 lives in the home. Under NYC’s Local Law 1, landlords must conduct regular lead inspections and address hazards.
What You Can Do as a Tenant:
Ask your landlord for a recent lead paint inspection report.
If they haven’t tested for lead, request an inspection at no cost to you.
Being aware of NYC lead laws can save you money while keeping your living space safe.
9. Request Lead Paint Clearance Testing After Renovations
If you’re renovating an older home or apartment, lead-based paint dust can spread easily, even if you’re not removing walls or repainting. Some lead inspection companies offer low-cost post-renovation lead dust testing to ensure your home remains safe.
Who Needs Clearance Testing?
Homeowners after renovations in pre-1978 homes
Landlords completing required lead hazard repairs
Contractors working on NYC rental properties
Clearing lead hazards before moving in ensures a safe, toxin-free home.
10. Choose Clean NYC for Affordable Lead Paint Inspection in NYC

Affordable Housing Solutions Highlighted in Long Island City Planning Meeting
During the City Planning Commission's recent public meeting, officials discussed steps being implemented to maintain affordability for proposed housing development projects in Long Island City. The meeting, part of the broader Long Island City Neighborhood Plan, emphasized the importance of integrating affordable housing while accommodating community needs.
Key strategies highlighted include rent stabilization and income restriction, which are crucial tools employed by the NYC Department of Housing Preservation and Development (HPD). Rent stabilization protects households from sudden rent increases, particularly in larger, older buildings and new HPD-administered housing, including inclusionary housing projects. Income restrictions ensure that affordable units are reserved specifically for lower-income families who need them most, allowing those households to pay no more than 30% of their income towards rent (Source: https://youtu.be/2mhNPKBj1Co&t=2134).
Officials also reviewed the Mandatory Inclusionary Housing (MIH) program, which allows for variations in affordability based on family size and income levels. The MIH options differ in the percentage of units designated as affordable, with some requiring more units at higher average Area Median Income (AMI) thresholds, and others allowing for fewer units with lower AMI benchmarks (Source: https://youtu.be/2mhNPKBj1Co&t=2070).
Another point of discussion was the necessity for balancing affordable with market-rate housing. The attendees voiced the need for innovative solutions such as converting commercial spaces into residential units to meet the needs of diverse family types, particularly single-person households (Source: https://youtu.be/2mhNPKBj1Co&t=3292).
The overall sentiment at the meeting was one of collaboration among various city agencies, including HPD, the Department of City Planning, and the New York City Housing Authority, to enhance the affordability of new housing developments. Discussion also touched on the challenges of lengthy review processes and the difficulty in building deeply affordable housing on public land. Participants called for greater transparency from developers regarding financial disclosures (Source: https://youtu.be/2mhNPKBj1Co&t=3100).
Community members and advocates concluded by emphasizing the need to prioritize affordable housing development alongside maintaining green spaces, promoting sustainable building practices, and supporting homeownership opportunities for families (Source: https://youtu.be/2mhNPKBj1Co&t=3359). As the city moves forward, these discussions will shape the future of housing policy in Long Island City.

What Is Pregnancy Nose? 3 Ob-Gyns Explain
The body changes a lot during pregnancy, from fluctuating hormones to a sometimes-hard and sometimes-soft pregnant belly. But a new social media trend is shining light on a physical change in pregnancy that has caught many people off guard: pregnancy nose. On TikTok, #PregnancyNose has more than 29 million views, with an additional 2.9 million under #PregnantNose. Each hashtag is filled with people sharing photos of what their noses looked like before they were pregnant and during pregnancy. The difference in many cases is drastic. One creator, whose username is heyosato, has more than 23 million views on their #PregnancyNose video. "I'm going to be so cute pregnant! I can't wait," the first photo caption reads. Then that image is followed up by a second photo where her nose shape is noticeably different. More recently, another user shared photos of her face after someone complimented her pregnancy nose. "Is cute in the room with us?" she captioned the video. Both videos have stirred lots of conversation on TikTok, with others sharing their experience with pregnancy nose or reacting that they've never heard of a nose changing during those nine months. So what's the truth? Is pregnancy nose real? Here's what the experts have to say. --- Experts Featured in This Article Monte Swarup, MD, is a board-certified ob-gyn in Chandler, AZ, and founder of HPD Rx. Kecia Gaither, MD, is an ob-gyn and director of perinatal services at NYC Health + Hospitals/Lincoln. Lynae Brayboy, MD, is an ob-gyn and chief medical officer of Clue, a period tracker app. --- What Is Pregnancy Nose? Pregnancy nose is exactly what it sounds like: how your nose looks (and changes) while pregnant. Despite many people on TikTok being surprised by the change, your nose can be affected by a pregnancy, ob-gyn Monte Swarup, MD, tells POPSUGAR. Dr. Swarup says that pregnancy nose affects approximately 20 percent of pregnant people. Pregnancy nose is an umbrella term for changes in the nose during pregnancy, and experiences can vary. For example, some find themselves with a constant "runny nose," while others may have congestion or swelling or be more prone to a bloody nose, ob-gyn Kecia Gaither, MD, tells POPSUGAR. Why Does Pregnancy Nose Happen? The answer for why some experience pregnancy nose isn't fully understood, says ob-gyn Lynae Brayboy, MD. There are theories, however, as Dr. Brayboy points out. "There have been reports that it is a combination of high levels of hormones from the placenta and immune changes or sensitivities to allergens like dust mites," she says. As Dr. Swarup explains, the hormone level increase in pregnancy can cause blood vessels "to become dilated." As a result, there will be "more blood flow to parts of the body including the nose," which may lead to swelling and congestion. Is Pregnancy Nose a Cause For Concern? While pregnancy nose may be bothersome to some people, it's generally harmless, Dr. Brayboy says. However, some pregnant people should be aware of potential exacerbations of other medical concerns. "Any pregnant person with respiratory or breathing problems should be aware that the congestion can lead to something called post-nasal drip," Dr. Brayboy explains. And this can lead to an exacerbation of breathing issues, like an asthma attack. Also, facial swelling and swelling of the hands accompanied by blurred vision and headaches during pregnancy (particularly during the second half of pregnancy, from 20 weeks) should be flagged to a medical provider, as it can be a sign of preeclampsia, according to the Cleveland Clinic. How Is Pregnancy Nose Treated? When treating pregnancy nose, the focus will be on managing symptoms to minimize the discomfort during pregnancy. Laying on your back can make congestion worse, for example, but keeping the head of your bed elevated during sleep may help ease symptoms and help prevent interrupted sleep, Dr. Gaither says. Other treatments… https://www.popsugar.com/family/pregnancy-nose-explained-49054706?utm_source=dlvr.it&utm_medium=tumblr

Housing Lotteries in America and How It Works in NYC
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/da157213ab06025491dbc9659cf88b8b/d218daef992f766c-fd/s540x810/60e8388f861b69f4cc3b01cb26e7b72782584da9.webp)
The pursuit of affordable housing is a common challenge for many Americans. With skyrocketing rent prices and a shortage of affordable homes, finding an affordable place to live can be a daunting task. Fortunately, housing lotteries have emerged as a creative solution to this problem, offering a glimmer of hope for those looking to secure an affordable home. Understanding Housing Lotteries Housing lotteries, also known as affordable housing lotteries or housing choice lotteries, are government programs that aim to provide low and moderate-income individuals and families with access to affordable housing. These lotteries are typically administered by city or state housing authorities, non-profit organizations, or private developers in collaboration with local government agencies. The primary goal is to ensure that a portion of newly constructed or renovated housing units are set aside for individuals who meet certain income criteria, creating a more inclusive and diverse community. How Housing Lotteries Work Housing lotteries operate on a structured process that includes the following steps: 1. Determine Eligibility: Each housing development or project sets its own income and household size criteria. Prospective tenants must meet these requirements to be eligible for the housing lottery. Eligibility details are usually provided in the lottery announcement. 2. Apply Online: Interested applicants can typically apply online through a designated portal. The application process may require the submission of personal and financial information, such as income, employment history, and family size. 3. Random Drawing: After the application period ends, a random drawing is conducted to select potential tenants from the pool of eligible applicants. This ensures a fair and unbiased selection process. 4. Interview and Verification: Those selected in the lottery are invited to an interview to verify their eligibility. Applicants are required to provide documentation, such as tax returns, pay stubs, and identification, to confirm their financial status. 5. Secure the Affordable Home: Successful applicants are offered a lease for an affordable housing unit within the development. They can then move into their new home at a rent significantly below the market rate. The availability of affordable units through housing lotteries is limited, and the demand is often much higher than the supply. As a result, many applicants may not be selected or may need to apply multiple times to secure a unit. What is the NYC Housing Lottery? New York City is renowned for its vibrant neighborhoods, iconic skyline, and diverse culture. However, one aspect that has long plagued the city is the high cost of housing. Rent in the Big Apple is notoriously expensive, making it challenging for many New Yorkers to find affordable housing. That's where the NYC Housing Lottery comes into play, offering a glimmer of hope for those seeking affordable homes in this bustling metropolis. View current housing lotteries here Please note that different properties have different deadline Understanding the NYC Housing Lottery The NYC Housing Lottery, officially known as the New York City Housing Connect, is a housing assistance program run by the New York City Department of Housing Preservation and Development (HPD). It aims to provide affordable housing options to low and moderate-income individuals and families. Through this program, New Yorkers can apply for housing units in various developments across the city at significantly reduced rents. These housing units are typically part of newly constructed or renovated buildings, and the lottery system ensures that eligible applicants have a fair chance to secure these affordable homes. How Does the NYC Housing Lottery Work? The NYC Housing Lottery operates on a lottery-based system, which means that eligible applicants are randomly selected to rent the available units. Here's a step-by-step overview of how the process typically works: 1. Check Your Eligibility: Before applying, you must determine if you meet the income and household size requirements for a specific development. Each housing project sets its own eligibility criteria, so it's crucial to review the details for each listing. 2. Create an Account: To participate in the lottery, you'll need to create an account on the NYC Housing Connect website, where you can browse available listings and submit applications. Each household is allowed to register only one account, and you have to keep your profile current to stay qualified. 3. Submit Applications: When you find a housing development that matches your eligibility, you can submit an application online through the Housing Connect portal. Make sure to provide accurate information and meet all deadlines. The best part is, you can apply for any lottery that you qualify for, but keep to one application per property, by each deadline. Of course, the best rule of thumb is to only apply for properties that you qualify for based on your income and household size. Take note of each building’s requirements, income limits and occupancy limit for each apartment unit. 4. Wait for the Lottery Drawing: After the application deadline, a random drawing is conducted to select potential tenants. If you're selected, you'll be invited to an interview and asked to provide documents to verify your eligibility. Successful applicants are notified by snail mail, not email, so don’t forget to check your postbox to avoid missing your appointment with housing authorities. Before handing out the keys, they need to interview applicants first. 5. Secure Your Affordable Home: If you successfully complete the interview and your eligibility is confirmed, you can sign a lease and move into your new affordable home. At the end of the day, the NYC Housing Lottery isn't a quick fix. The demand for affordable housing in New York City is incredibly high, and the number of available units is limited. As a result, many applicants may not be selected in the lottery or may have to apply to multiple developments over time. What is the NYC Housing Lottery Interview Process The NYC Housing Lottery is a program that helps New Yorkers find affordable housing and rent-stabilized apartments. The lottery application process can be lengthy and competitive, but it is worth it for those who are selected. Once you submit your application, you may be selected for an interview to verify your eligibility. Here is what to expect during the NYC Housing Lottery interview process: 1. Notification: If you are selected for an interview, you will be notified by mail or email. It is important to check your mailbox and email regularly to avoid missing your appointment. 2. Paperwork: Once you've been selected for an interview, you'll need to produce a ton of paperwork. This may include proof of income, identification, tax returns, and other documents to verify your eligibility. 3. Interview: During the interview, you will meet with the building developers to discuss your application and eligibility. This is an opportunity for them to ask you questions and for you to ask any questions you may have. 4. Wait: After the interview, you will need to wait for a decision. It may take several weeks or months to hear back from the developers. 5. Sign a lease: If you are selected for an apartment, you will need to sign a lease and move in. If you are not selected, you can appeal the decision or apply to other affordable housing lotteries. It is important to note that the NYC housing lottery is a highly competitive process, with many applicants for each available apartment. It is important to be patient and persistent in your search for affordable housing in New York City. Winning this lottery can be a challenging process, but there are some tips that can help increase your chances of success. Here are some tips to help you win the NYC Housing Lottery: 1. Be persistent and keep applying: The more you apply, the better your chances of winning. Keep an eye on the lotteries that are offered and apply to as many as you can. 2. Apply to apartments in your community board: Due to a community preference clause in the policy, half of the available lottery units go to people who already reside in a neighborhood. If there is an apartment available in your neighborhood, do not miss the opportunity to apply. 3. Keep your information up to date: With life, there come many changes. You should consider updating your information on your NYC Housing Connect profile. Once you update them, they will be updated instantaneously for every lottery you applied for. 4. Only submit one application per building: Submitting multiple applications for the same building will not increase your chances of winning. In fact, it may disqualify you from the lottery. 5. Stay organized with your paperwork: Make sure you have all the necessary paperwork ready and organized before your interview. This will help you avoid any delays or complications during the process. 6. Apply for studios if you're single: Because the household size is only 1, there are fewer people applying for those than the larger units. 7. Check your eligibility: Make sure you are eligible for the programs you are applying to. Check the income requirements and other eligibility criteria before submitting your application. 8. Choose your preferences carefully: When applying for a lottery, make sure you choose your preferences carefully. Consider factors such as location, size, and amenities. 9. Stay informed: Keep up to date with the latest news and updates about the NYC Housing Lottery. Follow the official NYC Housing Connect website and other reliable sources for information. Our final #NewYorksFoundation City Agency spotlight is the NYC Department of Housing Preservation and Development (HPD). Check out the City Story they created "From Abandoned Tuberculosis Hospital to Supportive Housing." (photo and text via @nychousing)⠀ .⠀ 621 Water Street (Manhattan) is a red-brick Renaissance style building that originally served as Gouverner Hospital. Constructed in stages beginning in 1897, it features unusual curved walls intended to help prevent the accumulation of dirt and germs, and wrap-around balconies that provided access to fresh air for tuberculosis patients.⠀ .⠀ The building became outdated and was abandoned in the 1960s. It remained vacant and under threat of demolition until1991 when it was then purchased and rehabilitated by the non-profit Community Access thanks to support from HPD. In 1994, it re-opened as Gouverneur Court, an affordable assisted living residence that continues to serve over 120 vulnerable New Yorkers!⠀ ⠀ The "then" photos from 1991 and was captured by HPD photographer Larry Racioppo before renovation. Behind the Scenes: HPD’s Housing New York Open Data
What/Who is HPD?
The New York City Department of Housing Preservation and Development (HPD) publishes nearly 40 open datasets on the city’s Open Data Portal. These datasets highlight the work we do every day to meet our agency mission: to promote the quality and affordability of the city’s housing and the strength and diversity of its many neighborhoods. HPD accomplishes its objectives through four key services:
• Preserving affordable housing and protecting tenants
• Developing new affordable housing
• Enforcing the Housing Maintenance Code
• Engaging neighborhoods in planning
While we publish Open Data related to a variety of our programs and services, this blog post will focus on the datasets related to the Mayor’s Housing New York plan.
What is Housing New York?
Chart based on Affordability Levels Table in Housing New York by the Numbers https://www1.nyc.gov/site/hpd/about/housing-new-york-by-the-numbers.page
HPD is the agency responsible for leading Housing New York (HNY), Mayor de Blasio’s plan to create or preserve 300,000 affordable homes by 2026. HNY is the most ambitious housing plan in the country; 300,000 units are enough homes to house the entire population of Seattle or Boston.
Over the course of this 12-year plan, the goal is to preserve 60% and create (or build) 40% of the total 300,000 affordable housing units. Each housing unit we create or preserve targets a specific income group. Per the graphic above, nearly 85% of our housing units serve extremely low, very low, and low-income households, which are defined as a family of 3 making $76,880 or less each year.
In an effort to better enable the public to track progress towards Housing New York targets, HPD publishes two datasets with information on projects, buildings, and units counted towards the plan. Broadly, these datasets present information on projects that have been counted towards HNY at a building- and a project-level. You can find them by searching for “Housing New York” on the City’s Open Data Portal.
Housing New York Datasets
Housing New York data is divided into project-level and building-level data because some datapoints collected for the plan describe a whole project, and other datapoints describe attributes of buildings and units counted towards the plan.
As shown below, a project is one or more buildings financed and/or regulated as a group entity. A building is a physical structure containing one or more units within a project. And a unit is an apartment, house, or any single residential dwelling unit.
The building-level file displays project information along with its associated building datapoints such as house number, street name, borough-block-lot (BBL), and Building Identification Number (BIN) for each building within a project. Unit counts are provided by building.
The project-level file displays information by project and includes datapoints such as the presence of senior units. Unit counts are provided for each project, rather than by building.
How to use Housing New York Open Data
You might ask: How can I use these Housing New York open datasets to track progress towards the plan’s objectives? Both datasets contain diverse datapoints, but here’s a quick overview of some of the fields included in each file:
You can use the projects file to see what percentage of HNY units serve low-income households:
The buildings file can be used to look at HNY metrics by construction type. See the visualization of HNY units by construction type below.
And that’s not all! We recommend that you play around with the Open Data Portal’s built-in visualization features to explore our data even further. You can access the visualization tool by clicking the “Visualize” button on the top right of the Housing New York dataset pages.
Tips + Tricks for using HPD’s HNY Datasets
Now that we’ve covered the differences between the Housing New York datasets and some basic examples of what you can analyze with this information, we want to leave you with some final tips and tricks for working with this data.
• HNY by Project dataset presents data at the project-level
• HNY by Building dataset presents the data at the building-level
• ‘Project ID’ links the two datasets together
• HNY buildings are geocoded, except for confidential projects (confidential projects assist specific homeowners or other special populations, e.g.:domestic violence survivors)
• Data are updated quarterly
We encourage you to reach out to HPD if you have questions about our Open Data through the Portal’s Contact Us page, linked here.
