The Crossroads

Several years after the tragic death of his younger sister, the Catholic priest, Masa Judice, realized that no matter how hard he preached, no matter how many sins he absolved, no matter how hard he worked to teach his flock the right way, things still didn't improve. After weeks of meditation and praying, Masa realized that the only way for these fools to understand what awaited them if they continued down their wicked path, was to show them firsthand. And if words couldn't convince them, he'd have to resort to more... extreme measures.

Gathering many able men and women of all shapes and ages, he put together a secret group of individuals who obeyed him, and only him. And he had only one mission for them: to find and bring forth those lost sheep who were stumbling around in the darkness into the light.

Bio: After usurping power from the former priest of his church, this cunning Catholic priest created a secret gang hellbent on bringing the Word of God down on those foolish infidels who refused to listen. And if they still refused to adhere to God's law, then he'd personally see them absolved of their sins, one way or another.

Full Name: Juu Judice

Age: 17

Position: Second-in-Command

Bio: The adopted daughter of Masa. He found her out on the street whilst walking around Ginza. After a failed attempt at robbing him, he brought her back to the church and fed her, telling her she'd never go hungry again if she joined his flock. She agreed, and the Catholic priest began molding her into a sadistic, merciless killer who obeys Masa's word to the law. She has an intense hatred and loathing for Sumire Shinomiya of Shinagawa. She hates her for not only stealing away the attention of Max Soukoku (whom she has sworn her undying love for) but also because she blames her and Scorpion Den for the death of her biological parents after they accidentally bombed a government building, with her parents inside.

3. "Nyan"

Full Name: Kahori Maeda

Age: 24

Position: Caretaker

Bio: For as long as she can remember, Kahori has always been fascinated by cats. It eventually got to the point where she ended up believing that she was one! Unfortunately, this sort of behavior got her locked up in a mental institution. Fortunately for her, Masa heard of her situation and got the prison to release her under his custody. After giving her a place in the church with a nice comfy armchair, next to a lovely warm fireplace, as well as some animatronic cat ears and paws created by the Scientist, Kahori has sworn her undivided loyalty to The Father and will tear into anyone who dares go against him, not forgetting to self-mutilate for any ousted intruder...

"Father Masa gave me a home. He gave me a cozy spot by a fire where I can sleep all day if I want. He gives me all the fish I can eat. And when I do a good job, he even gives me pats on the head! This church is Father Masa's home, and it's my home too! I won't let you or anyone else take it from me! Nyan!!!" - Kahori Maeda

4. "Cassiopeia"

Full Name: Tora Yamaji

Age: 18

Position: Member

Bio: The illegitimate child of a rich nobleman and a poor woman, Tora was forced to wear a mask for most of her life under her father's orders so no one would find out about his infidelity. Her mother ceded her parental rights, allowing Tora to live with her father. However, she was frequently insulted and told that she was "ugly beyond repair" daily by her father and her peers, causing her to develop low self-esteem.

Masa, having heard of her, had Juu bring her to him and had her mask removed. With his gift for words, he convinced her that it was not she that was ugly, but this rotten world, that couldn't see the true beauty she possessed. After a week of this, Tora pledged her loyalty to The Father and made the decision to join the Church, along with her mother. A year later, she and her mother inherited her father's estate. According to the rumors, he mysteriously died in his bed...

Bio: Blood... blood is what drives Chimaki. Ever since she was young, this curious woman has always wanted to know how things move and work. A former assistant of Ritsuko Okada's, she was expelled from Chuohku and locked up after she tried to cut open her former mentor, fascinated with her cool and cold nature. Fortunately, she was released from the asylum due to a lack of space and because she wasn’t considered a flight risk. Oh, if only those poor fools realized that a certain Catholic priest had made her a deal to join his gang, where she'd be able to benefit from the services of Juu and the Bros...

"Let's see... a trim of the shears here, a blow with the hammer there, and... there! Perfect! ...Oh, stop screaming, you baby! I'm only taking out some of your blood! Be glad it's joining my collection! ...And it's such an excellent color too. At the hospital, I had trouble getting these sorts of things off victims. People would start questioning if one of the patients was suddenly missing one of their toes. But thanks to Father Masa, I get to study and experiment all I want with no repercussions!"

6. "The Bros (I and Am)"

Name: Manobu Kita and Kuri Kita

Age: 21 and 16

Position: Member/Church Boy

Bio: These two brothers have been through the best and worst of times together. Growing up in a broken home with their drunk and abusive mother, the two only had themselves to rely on. Having enough, the two ran away from home and developed scams to make ends meet. Kuri would often pose as an innocent child to get victims to lower their defenses, while Manobu would then rob them afterward. Eventually, the law caught up to them both, and they were both charged.

However, before they could be sent away, Masa persuaded the police to release them under his custody. Offering them a home and food in exchange for their services, the brothers agreed. Kuri now serves as a young church boy, while Manobu works with the gang. Though they don't fully believe in much of what The Father preaches, they figure this is better than going back home to their mother.

"You know the drill, chump. Empty out your pockets, and we'll let you go!"

"If I was you, I'd listen to my brother, pal. I know I look scary, but trust me, you don't want to see him when he gets mad. You may think of us as nothing more than petty thugs, but we're good folk, we are! Our hands to God!"

"Yeah! It's just... well, hard times have a way of turning even the most decent folk bad, ya' know? It's not our fault we were born into a house with a good-for-nothing drunk as a mom."

"True that. If not for Father Masa, who knows where we'd be right now..."

7. "The Scientist"

Name: Ippei Fujimoto

Age: 35

Position: Inventor/Torturer

Bio: Believe it or not, this young man actually did not plan to join Masa's church or gang. Unlike most members of the Crossroads, he was born into a good family, had a good education, and was blessed with a good job as an electrician. Unfortunately, messing around with dodgy equipment was bound to end badly. One evening, while working in his workshop on a blown-out, old speaker, Ippei got the kind of electric shock that could plunge half a city into darkness. And though it blinded him in his right eye, it gave him an epiphany. And he now has such an in-depth understanding of electricity that he sees himself as the god of thunder and lightning!

Wanting at all costs to be able to send out electric shocks to his critics, he applied to The Crossroads, offering his technical know-how to find a way to make his dreams come true via the shortest possible circuit.

"No, no, no! The charge still isn't high enough! Damn it, maybe I should have listened to Chimaki and waited for a thunderstorm to try this out. These defibrillators need a bit more work it seems. ...Oh well, trial and error, that's all it is. Thanks for your help, pal! A shame you got burnt to a toast, but your contributions will be remembered! ...At least until Father Masa finds me another poor soul I can use these on." - Ippei Fujimoto

Performing more research !

The title is correct. As I will be looking at some examples of weird weapons within popular games that seemingly do not fit the vibe of the rest of the game.

These weapons include Mr Toots from Red Faction: Armageddon, The Dubstep Gun from Saints Row 4 (I remember there used to be a Minecraft mod based around this), the Grooviton from Ratchet and Clank (2016), Mutated Milk from Team Fortress 2, The Cluckshot from Gears of War 3, The Hand Cannon from Dead Space 2, and finally the Super Sheep from Worms - The DIrectors Cut (1997).

That's a lot of weapons and games with no information about them, but I'll get through it.

Mr Toots - Red Faction: Armageddon:

This weapon is an interesting one. (I apologise for the low quality image.)

According to the wiki, this weapon is believed to be based off of the popular Nyan Cat meme, and I can certainly see where they're coming from. Especially because in the game, when you 'fire' him, rainbows seem to shoot out of his rear end. (There was not much on the Wiki, I'm sorry.)

The Dubstep Gun - Saints Row IV

This is another very strange example of a weapon that does not fit the games theme.

It is a very powerful weapon in which while it is firing, as the name implies, there is accompanying dubstep along with it (very 2013).

Groovitron - Ratchet and Clank (2016)

The Groovitron is another interesting weapon that acts similar to the Fortnite Boogie Bomb (though fortnite released after this, so that would probbaly be based off of this, if anything.) It is a recurring item in the Ratched & Clank franchise in which it first appeared as a usable weapon in the 'A Crack in Time' game, released in 2009.

Mutated Milk - Team Fortress 2

Added in the 'Love & War' update of June 2014, the Mutated Milk is an item which seems to be a reskin of a pre-existing item, the Mad Milk, as it does the exact same thing, with only a few cosmetic changes. Out of every weapon in this list, this is the least 'weird' in my opinion as Team Fortress 2 has a wide variety of odd and wacky weapons.

The Cluckshot - Gears of War 3

According to the Wiki (I know none of these weapons except the Dubstep Gun from Saints Row 4, so all of the information I get is from the Wiki's of the respective games), the Cluckshot is identical to an already existing weapon in the game, the Boomshot Grenade Launcher. However, rather than firing grenades, it shoots explosive chickens.

The Hand Cannon - Dead Space 2

Within Dead Space 2 is a weapon called the Hand Cannon. Now, if you've played any game with a gun before, you'd be thinking 'Oh okay it's like a Desert Eagle or something like in Fortnite?'. No.

It is a giant foam finger, a literal 'hand' cannon.

The weapon seems to be very overpowered within the game, though it is only unlockable after beating the game on Hard Core mode, or on Impossible mode in the 2023 remaster.

As it one-shots every single enemy it comes in to contact with, it is definetly one of the more overpowered weapons on this list, being able to rapid fire it with an unlimited ammo capacity and a fast rate of fire.

Super Sheep - Worms: The Directors Cut

As you can tell, this is a very weird weapon, because this is literally just a sheep with a cape.

Interestingly, it isn't even that weird in Worms, considering the fact that is has weapons from the Holy Hand Grenade, to just a literal sheep, not to be confused with this Super Sheep.

This shows that no matter what setting or environment your game has, there can always be funny and unique weapons that don't have to fit the environment.

Obviously, this has to be done in moderation because it could ruin the immersion.

Minions (2015)

Uh... People fucking hate the minions. And I’m not sure their hate stems from their movie making more money than Inside Out did, like mine does. From what I’ve gathered, these characters are super annoying. The annoying things they do include: Being loud, talking too quickly, talking too much, talking in gibberish, cackling, being nonsensical. I can’t really argue with that. That is annoying.

But I watched Minions, and I liked Minions. Apparently this is an immensely controversial statement. Maybe it’s just me, but I don’t find their behavior annoying. I think I would find it annoying if I was bombarded with it--I’m talking ninety minutes of nonstop talking, flailing, and slipping on banana peel. Just every single second, and a soundtrack entirely filled with bicycle horns. But I really didn’t feel bombarded by their qualities. Not only did the movie smartly leave some breathing room, but--the things the minions are known for aren’t the only thing they do. Often times they’re quiet. Subtle, even.

And when they’re not, I find it funny. These are very different characters from the average, well-mannered person. They don’t just behave in a silly manner, but they have an entirely unique culture. They look bizarrely different and this informs a lot of their physicality. They also sound bizarrely different. Nobody understands their language, and the fact that you’re interpreting what they mean based not off their words but their inflection is really interesting to me as a moviegoer. Shaun the Sheep Movie employed the same thing and it’s up for Best Animated Feature. A lot of what the minions do is over-the-top, ridiculous situational humor. It’s considerably removed from reality, and the amusement I get from that contrast makes me laugh sometimes.

It’s always tricky to explain why you find something funny, but it might be trickier to decipher why people find this so unfunny. Culture today must be very removed from the past, because this movie reminds me a lot of Charlie Chaplin’s work. It also reminds me a lot of the Looney Tunes and many other classic cartoons made in that same era. It even reminds me of the early Disney cartoons--you know, that company that brought you your beloved Frozen or whatever. If Minions were made in the sixties as a cartoon show, I sincerely think it would fit right in. And having their movie take place in the sixties may have been a subtextual way to prove this very point.

People here in 2016 land are different, though. If they hate the style of the minions, then they must have no room for silly stuff. Everything has to be clever and meaningful. But you know--I don’t want to burst any bubbles here, but--silly humor has proven to be clever and meaningful many times. The idea of something subverting an established norm is an actual idea that inspires actual thought. Its existence is based on contrast to our conventions and just because it doesn’t teach us a lesson about bisexuals or banking doesn’t mean that it doesn’t offer some sort of commentary.

But maybe you want there to be a very specific synthesis of ideas and morals in your entertainment. I get that. That’s also complete bullshit because social media exists. I’ve seen what the kids are sharing. I’ve seen their memes, their vines, their YouTube videos. And if there was ever a time where culture as a whole should be willing to embrace silly humor, it should be right the fuck now. We are teeming with it, and people love it. If you can’t think of any relevant examples of this, you’re either incredibly out of touch in 2016 or a complete fucking idiot.

So why are the people who embrace the Harlem Shake and Nyan cat so adamantly opposed to Minions? The minions, contrary to what their name implies, are not your enemies. They are showcasing the same kind of humor you clearly want to see. You could try making a case that the people who like stuff like the Harlem Shake do like the minions, and the minions-haters are the people who also hate all this weird stuff online. But uh... No. I’m not even going to present my evidence, but as a professional surveyor of the Internet, this is not true. I can easily see somebody who embraces the absurdity of the iconic horsehead mask going on a diatribe about how minions are ruining cinema. (And if a video showing this does not yet exist, I am very tempted to make it.)

So why do people hate this? I have a theory. A pattern I’ve noticed in a lot of the popular silly stuff people embrace is that it seems like it was an accident. A creation by somebody that didn’t know any better. I mean, look at Gangnam Style! Those fucking foreigners just don’t get it, and it’s hilarious! And as long as this humor seems to be unintentional, people can enjoy it without really supporting it. They liked it because it failed, not because it succeeded. They have higher standards for the things they want to succeed.

But when something like Minions comes along that completely embraces how silly it is, this is unacceptable. Minions was made by people in Hollywood with a ton of money. They wanted this movie to be full of ridiculous antics. Fuck them! Yeah, I see what this is. You want to shroud yourself in a layer or irony or something, because you don’t want to admit that you like something that’s silly. Oh no, your tastes are far too refined for that kind of stuff--you could only enjoy it if it were a failure. But let’s consider that maybe you’re elaborately lying to yourself. You would watch that awful campy movie even if it’s made that way on purpose. You like bad stuff. You like weird stuff. You like silly stuff. And maybe Minions is better than you because it doesn’t feel insecure enough to hide from that.

And honestly, this theory doesn’t even apply to a lot of the social media people are absorbing. A lot of it is made by entertainers who are absolutely putting on an intentional act. They’re acting silly, on purpose, to entertain people. But hey, maybe people register this as an impression of people that are actually “accidentally silly”. There’s no way these entertainers are just, you know, being fucking silly!

I could be wrong here. Maybe people really do dislike the minions and also happen to be into a six second video of somebody squeezing a bunch of rubber ducks (among the most popular vines as of the time this was written). But if I’m right, I can’t blame people. Here in 2016 land, there’s a lot of sensitivity, and it’s had us set the bar very high. As beneficial as this can be, it can also make people very insecure about what belongs at that bar.
