I've been thinking about collective grief a lot. It seems that everywhere I look, people are stuck in one of the stages of grief. Denial, anger, bargaining, and sadness are the motivations behind so much of the upheaval we're all facing daily. Most of us touch the edge of acceptance, only to get burned by another terrible thing in the news or our communities. It's difficult to imagine how we'll all heal when the challenges just keep coming. Today I'm reminding myself that this is all temporary. I'm working hard to release the things outside of my control, and holding tight to the inner knowing that pressure is how diamonds are made. 2020 has been a time unlike any other in our lives. Disillusionment, grief, and disappointment are now daily events for most of us. My father once told me "grown-ups know that there's no such thing as having control, we only have the ability to make choices" It's been a guiding principle in my life, and one that I'll continue to repeat to myself today. As powerless as we might feel right now, I want to remind everyone that we still have the power to make choices that will help shape the lives that we want to live. Whether that looks like asking for what we need, setting a boundary, unplugging from the news, healing a rift, casting a ballot, walking away from a fight, or making time for creativity and self care, tap into your power and take action.
