Philadelphia coronavirus updates: Green phase date, Six Flags reopen, July 4th fireworks, NJ boardwalks

Latest Penn to expand its free virtual summer academy to rising seniors in parochial schools
The University of Pennsylvania will open its free four-week virtual summer academy on career and college preparation and academic enrichment to rising seniors in Philadelphia’s parochial schools. The university will also open to parochial school seniors its free self-paced “How to Apply to College” course.
Penn previously said the program was for rising seniors in the Philadelphia’s public schools, including district schools and charters. Penn created the program in recognition of the losses students experienced this spring, including not being able to go on college campus tours and transitioning to online learning.
Pennsylvania does less coronavirus testing than almost every other state

Nurse Practitioner Nina Marell administers a coronavirus test to a a subject in his car on April 28, 2020, at the Family Health Center at 11th and Parrish.
Pennsylvania has performed 5,215 coronavirus tests per 100,000 people — fewer than all but seven states, counting Puerto Rico and the District of Columbia, according to an analysis by Johns Hopkins University.
New Jersey has conducted the third-most tests of the states, at 14,227 tests per 100,000, while Delaware is not far behind, at 11th.
Will Pennsylvania’s low rate of testing prevent policy makers from determining if the state has reopened too soon?
Epidemiologists say the answer is not simple, and that in one key respect — the percent who test positive — Pennsylvania’s low level of testing may be adequate.
Testing has been a hot topic lately after President Donald Trump’s remarks at a campaign rally Saturday in Oklahoma. Without providing evidence, he said the numbers of COVID -19 cases were up in some parts of the United States not due to any real increase in illness, but because the country was performing too many tests. Aides later said he was being sarcastic, but he repeated the claim Monday, insisting he was serious and saying the country was doing “too good a job” of testing.
Concern in Philly that cases are plateauing

Philadelphia announced 108 new cases of the coronavirus Wednesday — a number roughly in line with the average daily cases the city has reported in the past week.
“The drop in new cases per day has definitely slowed and that could be indicative of a plateauing,” Health Department spokesperson James Garrow said in an email.
Health Commissioner Thomas Farley said Tuesday he was concerned about what a rise in new cases of the virus in many areas of the country could mean for Philadelphia. But Garrow said Wednesday that it was still too soon to determine whether Philadelphia’s cases are plateauing, noting that “it’s tough to say until were past it.”
“Whether it picks back up and we continue moving toward zero, or continues at this level, or starts to rise again is something we won’t know for a bit,” he said.
Officials also confirmed seven additional deaths of Philadelphia residents related to COVID-19 Wednesday, bringing the total number of deaths to 1,570 since the beginning of the pandemic.
A total number of 25,433 cases of COVID-19 have been reported in Philadelphia residents as of Wednesday. The city is planning to allow pools and hair salons to reopen Friday, and to fully move into the “green” phase of reopening July 3.
But Farley has warned that the continued easing of restrictions will depend on a continued reduction in new cases of the virus.
“This epidemic is definitely not over,” Farley said. “The risk right now is rising.”
Museums and aquariums can reopen in N.J. next week. But gyms and movie theaters will remain closed.

Aquariums in New Jersey, including the Adventure Aquarium in Camden, will be allowed to reopen on Thursday, July 2.
New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy said that museums, aquariums, other indoor recreational facilities, and libraries can open at 25% capacity on Thursday, July 2. The state will require heightened sanitation measures, social distancing and face coverings or masks.
The order includes bowling alley, shooting ranges, and arcades.
Movie theaters, concert venues, performing arts centers, nightclubs and gyms will remain closed, though fitness centers can allow individual training sessions by appointment.
“It brings us no joy to say that,” Murphy said. “We just are not there yet. We just don’t think it’s the responsible thing to do.”
New Jersey, New York and Connecticut will quarantine travelers from states with high COVID-19 rates
The governors of New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut announced that anyone traveling into their states from an area with a high level of community spread must quarantine for 14 days.
New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo said he believed the precaution would be essential to keeping the three states moving in the right direction in terms of confirmed cases. “I do believe we’re on the other side of the mountain,” he said. “But it’s not over til it’s over.”
The travel advisory is effective at midnight, and for now applies to people coming from Alabama, Arkansas, Arizona, Florida, South Carolina, North Carolina, Utah, and Texas. The new restrictions apply to travelers in states where the rolling seven-day average of new cases is at 10 or more people per 100,000, or 10% of those tested.
Murphy said the tri-state measure will focus on personal responsibility and rely on messaging on highways, airports, websites and social media to educate travelers. The three states will also ask hotels to communicate the 14-day quarantine to guests who have traveled from one of the impacted states.
“This is a smart thing to do. We have taken our people through hell and back. And the last thing we need to do is subject our folks to another round,” New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy said. “If you’ve been in a state that has a high infection rate, do the right thing.”
Coronavirus cases in the U.S. return to peak of outbreak
New coronavirus cases in the United States have surged to their highest level in two months, returning to numbers seen during the peak of the outbreak, according to Johns Hopkins University.
On Tuesday, the country reported more than 34,000 new cases of the virus, the third-highest day on record and the most new daily cases since April 24, when the nation reported more than 36,000 cases.
While states in the Northeast like New Jersey and Pennsylvania have seen cases decline for weeks, more than half of states — including Delaware — have seen increases in cases. Arizona, California, Mississippi, Nevada, and Texas all set single-day records Tuesday.
Anthony Fauci, the nation’s leading infectious disease expert, calling the surge of new infections “disturbing” during a congressional hearing Tuesday.
“The next couple of weeks are going to be critical to address those surges that we’re seeing in Texas, Florida, Arizona, and other states,” Fauci said.
Veterinarians in Pennsylvania can begin to spay and neuter pets again

Veterinary practices are now allowed to provide non-essential services and routine or elective surgeries, including spaying and neutering, the Wolf administration said Wednesday.
Under the state’s updated guidance, vets in both yellow and green counties are cleared to resume non-emergency surgical procedures.
In April, the state waived its requirement that dogs and cats had to be spayed or neutered before adoption; pet owners who adopted during the pandemic have 120 days from the adoption date to get their pets fixed.
Veterinary practices were deemed life-sustaining services and were never required to close due to COVID-19.
These preexisting conditions are most likely to hospitalize and kill people who contract coronavirus
These patients were 12 times more likely to die of the virus than patients who had been healthy. Chronic heart disease, diabetes, obesity, and chronic lung disease were the most commonly reported underlying medical conditions, according to the CDC.
In the Philadelphia area, emergency medicine doctors say the CDC’s findings largely reflect their experience treating COVID-19 patients, but predictions are by no means sure.
“COVID-19 is a very wild disease,” said Erica Harris, an emergency physician at Einstein Medical Center. “It’s very hard to predict which way it’s going to go. … There are people who can have every single risk factor and still do fine.”
The virus has hit the elderly, who are considered more vulnerable because they often have multiple chronic conditions, particularly hard. But Clarke Piatt, medical director of Bryn Mawr Hospital’s intensive-care unit, said he has seen some of the worst outcomes among patients in their 50s and 60s with type 2 diabetes and obesity.
Nearly half of patients hospitalized with COVID-19 had obesity, and about 28% had type 2 diabetes, according to the CDC.

Runners take part in the 2019 New York City Marathon in New York. This year’s marathon, scheduled to take place on Nov. 1, has been canceled due to the coronavirus pandemic.
The New York City Marathon, the world’s largest marathon, has been canceled, organizers announced on Wednesday. It had been scheduled for Nov. 1.
“While the marathon is an iconic and beloved event in our city, I applaud New York Road Runners for putting the health and safety of both spectators and runners first,” New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio said in a statement. “We look forward to hosting the 50th running of the marathon in November of 2021.”
The Philadelphia Marathon remains scheduled for Sunday, Nov. 22. The Broad Street run also remains scheduled for Sunday, Oct. 4.
“We have not made a decision on the races yet, further information will be made available in the coming days,” a spokesperson for Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney said.

Citing a reduction in testing appointments, Camden County announced it is closing the coronavirus testing site located at Camden County College in Gloucester Township. The site, which has been running since April 15, will cease operations at 4 p.m. on Friday, June 26.
“At this time, we feel confident that the site at Camden County College has served its purpose and can cease operations without impacting the availability of resources in the community,” Freeholder Director Louis Cappelli Jr. said in a statement.
The coronavirus testing site at 3101 Federal St. in East Camden will continue to operate, the county said. Cappelli Jr. also pointed out that testing capacity among healthcare providers and businesses like Rite Aid and CVS has “increased significantly” since the beginning of the pandemic.
The county reports 7,572 residents have tested positive for coronavirus since the pandemic began, though there were just 15 new positive cases reported on Tuesday. At least 430 county residents have died.
Six Flags Great Adventure to open next week

Six Flags Great Adventure in Jackson, N.J. announced on Wednesday it will reopen Friday, July 3, one day after the state relaxes coronavirus restrictions on amusement parks.
The popular amusement park said it will open first to members and season pass holders. The general public will be allowed to enter the park Saturday, July 4, with attendance levels gradually increasing throughout the month.
Six Flags said it will deploy an online reservation system to manage attendance, schedule guests for entry by day, and stagger arrival times to minimize proximity exposure. There will also be thermal imaging for temperature checks, touchless bag checks, and mobile food ordering.
“We have developed a comprehensive reopening safety plan that includes protocols designed by theme park and waterpark industry experts, along with best practices from top destination parks from around the world, which will allow guests to experience our parks in the safest way possible,” Six Flags President and CEO Mike Spanos said in a statement.
Six Flags Hurricane Harbor will remain closed, but the company noted a “preview date” is forthcoming.
Six Flags’ Wild Safari Drive-Thru Adventure opened May 30 following a seven-year hiatus. According to the company, it will remain open due to its popularity, noting that thousands of cars have taken the five-mile journey each day. The theme park said it aims to reintroduce its Safari Off Road Adventure guided truck tours soon.
Europe likely to keep U.S. travelers out due to spike in coronavirus cases
Joan Mateu / AP
Tourists sit at the beach of Palma de Mallorca, Spain, Tuesday, June 16, 2020. Borders opened up across Europe on Monday after three months of coronavirus closures that began chaotically in March.
Americans are unlikely to be allowed into Europe when the continent reopens its borders next week, because of how the coronavirus pandemic is flaring in the United States and President Donald Trump’s ban on Europeans entering the United States.
European nations appear on track to reopen their borders between each other by July 1, and their representatives in Brussels are now debating what virus-related criteria should apply when lifting border restrictions to the outside world that were imposed in March.
In recommendations to EU nations on June 11, the European Commission said “travel restrictions should not be lifted as regards third countries where the situation is worse” than the average in the 27 EU member countries plus Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland.
That is likely to rule out the United States, where new coronavirus infections have surged to the highest level in two months, according to figures compiled by Johns Hopkins University. After trending down for well over a month, new U.S. cases have risen for more than a week.
Black Lives Matter protests won’t lead to spike on COVID cases: study

Hundreds of people marched to the Art Museum with a protest that began at LOVE Park in Philadelphia, Pa. on June 21.
Based on data collected on protests in 315 U.S. cities where protests occurred, researchers at the National Bureau of Economic Research found no evidence recent demonstrations against police brutality have led to a significant rise in coronavirus cases.
While tens of thousands of people demonstrated in the streets of Philadelphia and elsewhere after the killing of George Floyd, researchers said there was strong evidence that stay-at-home behavior actually increased, as people tried to avoid the protests. Curfews and business closures also had the effect of keeping more people in their homes, researchers said.
“Our findings suggest that any direct decrease in social distancing among the subset of the population participating in the protests is more than offset by increasing social distancing behavior among others who may choose to shelter-at-home and circumvent public places while the protests are underway,” the report reads.
‘Poor Dr. Fauci’: Obama calls out Trump’s handling of the coronavirus pandemic
During a virtual fundraiser for former Vice President Joe Biden on Tuesday, former President Barack Obama condemned President Donald Trump for his administration’s handling of the coronavirus pandemic and for downplaying the threat of the virus.
“That suggests facts don’t matter, science doesn’t matter. That suggests that a deadly disease is fake news,” Obama said.
Obama, making his first remarks in the 2020 campaign since he endorsed Biden in April, said a Biden administration would heed the advice of public health experts, who have urged people to wear masks and avoid large gatherings.
As Obama spoke, Trump was delivering remarks at an indoor rally of about 3,000 students in Phoenix, Ariz, where coronavirus cases are spiking. Most of the people present in the crowd were not wearing masks.
“Poor Dr. Fauci, who has to testify and then see his advice flouted by the person who he’s working for,” Obama said.
Positivity rate up in South Jersey, more young people testing positive for COVID-19

As the coronavirus surges in other parts of the United States, officials in New Jersey said Tuesday they were concerned about avoiding such an uptick in cases here, particularly warning residents not to allow reopenings to coax them into relaxing.
The positivity rate has increased in South Jersey. More New Jerseyans 29 years old and younger are contracting the virus, now making up more than one-fifth of new infections. The increase is concerning health officials, who don’t believe it can solely be attributed to increased testing.
Though New Jersey’s overall statewide transmission rate remains good, Gov. Phil Murphy said it was beginning to creep up in several counties, though he did not identify which ones. He also said hospitalizations and the use of ventilators were slightly up in recent days.
“We can’t get our economy back to where it was if our hospitals fill back up with COVID-19 patients because some people mistakenly thought they were invincible,” Murphy said. “What we cannot have is a one-day increase in our health metrics becoming a trend because people gave up on social distancing.”
Outdoor amusement and water parks in New Jersey can reopen July 2, including rides on boardwalks, Murphy announced Tuesday.
Attendance at amusement parks will be capped at 50% capacity. Murphy said that “specific guidance is currently being finalized and will be forthcoming” but that it is anticipated that employees and attendees will be required to wear masks “whenever practicable.” Murphy also announced that playgrounds across the state will be allowed to reopen.
“We are excited to welcome families back onto the piers again,” said Will and Jack Morey of Morey’s Piers in Wildwood. “We are working hard to redefine family fun this summer.”

Amid Covid Health Worker Shortage, Foreign-Trained Professionals Sit on Sidelines
Use Our Content
It can be republished for free.
As hospitals nationwide struggle with the latest covid-19 surge, it’s not so much beds or ventilators in short supply. It’s the people to care for the sick.
Yet a large, highly skilled workforce of foreign-educated doctors, nurses and other health practitioners is going largely untapped due to licensing and credentialing barriers. According to the Migration Policy Institute think tank in Washington, D.C., some 165,000 foreign-trained immigrants in the U.S. hold degrees in health-related fields but are unemployed or underemployed in the midst of the health crisis.
Many of these workers have invaluable experience dealing with infectious disease epidemics such as SARS, Ebola or HIV in other countries yet must sit out the covid pandemic.
The pandemic highlights licensing barriers that predate covid, but many believe it can serve as a wake-up call for state legislatures to address the issue for this crisis and beyond. Already, five states — Colorado, Massachusetts, Nevada, New Jersey and New York — have adapted their licensing guidelines to allow foreign-trained health care workers to lend their lifesaving skills amid pandemic-induced staff shortages.
“These really are the cabdrivers, the clerks, the people who walk your dog,” said Jina Krause-Vilmar, CEO of Upwardly Global, a nonprofit that helps immigrant professionals enter the U.S. workforce. “They also happen to be doctors and nurses in their home countries, and they’re just not able to plug and play into the system as it’s set up.”
That’s left doctors such as Sussy Obando, a 29-year-old from Colombia, jumping through hoops to become physicians in the U.S. In 2013, she graduated after six years of medical school in Colombia, then spent a year treating patients in underserved communities. But when Obando arrived in the U.S., her credentials and experience weren’t enough.
While licensure guidelines vary by state, foreign-trained doctors typically must pass a medical licensing exam costing more than $3,500, and then complete at least a year of on-the-job training, known as a residency, in the U.S. For many, including Obando, that means brushing up on their English and learning the relevant medical terminology. She also needed U.S. clinical experience to qualify for a residency, something U.S.-trained doctors achieve through rotations during medical school.
“If you don’t know anyone in this field, you have to go door to door to find somebody to give you the opportunity to rotate,” Obando said.
She tried emailing Hispanic doctors she found online to ask if she could complete a rotation with one of them. She ended up paying $750 to enter a psychiatry rotation at the University of Texas McGovern Medical School in Houston.
“I tried to go into internal medicine,” Obando said. “But because psychiatry was less expensive, I have to go for that.”
She also worked for almost a year as a volunteer at Houston’s MD Anderson Cancer Center, and is now assisting with clinical trials for covid vaccines at the Texas Center for Drug Development. She’s applied for a residency through a national program that matches medical school graduates with residency slots. But it’s difficult for foreign-trained physicians to secure a spot, because many are earmarked for U.S. med school graduates. And many residency programs are open only to recent graduates, not those who finished medical school years ago.
“It’s competitive for people who trained in the United States to get into a residency program. If you’re trained outside the United States, it’s even harder,” said Jacki Esposito, director of U.S. policy and advocacy for World Education Services, a nonprofit that helps immigrants find jobs in the U.S. and Canada.
That’s why states such as Colorado have eased the requirement for a residency during the pandemic. Early on, Colorado officials realized they couldn’t license doctors and other health workers because covid lockdowns had canceled required licensing exams. Under an executive order from Democratic Gov. Jared Polis in April, state officials created a temporary licensing program allowing medical school graduates to begin practicing under supervision for six months, and then extended it through June 2021.
Officials created a similar pathway to temporary licensure for foreign medical school graduates who lacked the minimum year of residency.
Colorado also created temporary licenses for foreign-trained nurses, certified nurse’s aides, physician assistants and many other health professionals. All of those licenses require supervision from a licensed professional and are valid only as long as the governor’s public health emergency declaration remains in effect.
The state relaxed the scope-of-practice rules for those health workers, too, allowing them to perform any task their supervisors assign to them.
“So if you’re an occupational therapist, you can give vaccinations as long as they are delegating to you and they’re confident you have the skill and knowledge,” said Karen McGovern, deputy director of legal affairs for the professions and occupations division at the Colorado Department of Regulatory Agencies. “You can exceed your statutory skill and practice to what needs to be done during the pandemic.”
Through mid-December, the state had received 36 applications from foreign-trained doctors seeking temporary licenses, although only one applicant met all the criteria. New Jersey, on the other hand, received more than 1,100 applications for temporary medical licenses last year. (Michigan also issued an executive order allowing temporary licenses, but it was later rescinded.)
Many of the medical professionals stuck on the sidelines have unique skills and experience that would be invaluable during the pandemic. Victor Ladele, 44, finished medical school in Nigeria and treated patients during a drought in Niger in 2005, in the midst of the Darfur genocide in Sudan in 2007 and after a civil war in Liberia in 2010. His family moved to the U.S. a few years later, but Ladele was recruited to help with the Ebola outbreak in West Africa in 2014. What he thought would be a three-month stay turned into a two-year mission.
Now back in Edmond, Oklahoma, working with a U.N. program that helps new business ventures get off the ground, Ladele has found that the challenges of the covid pandemic parallel many of his past experiences. He saw how a program for Ebola contact tracing told people with a cough or fever to call a hotline, which would direct them to a care center. But as soon as the initiative went live, rumors began to spread on social media that European doctors at the care centers were harvesting organs. It took months of outreach to tribal and religious leaders to instill confidence in the system.
He’s seen similar misinformation spread about covid and masks.
“If, in Oklahoma, the public health officials had done outreach to all the pastors in the churches and gained their support for masking, would there be more people using masks?” Ladele said.
Ideally, he said, he would like to spend about half his time seeing patients, but the licensing process remains a challenge.
“It’s not unsurmountable,” he said. But “when I think of all the hurdles to credentialing here, I’m not really sure it’s worth the effort.”
Upwardly Global helps health professionals navigate that unfamiliar application and credentialing system. Many foreign-trained health workers have never had to write résumés or interview for jobs.
While the pandemic has temporarily eased entry in five states, Krause-Vilmar and others believe it could be a model to address workforce shortages in underserved areas across the country. As of September, the federal Health Resources and Services Administration had designated more than 7,300 health care shortage areas, requiring an additional 15,000 health care practitioners.
“We’ve had a crisis in access to health care, especially in rural areas, in this country for a long time,” she said. “How do we start imagining what that would look like in terms of more permanent licenses for these folks who are helping us recover and rebuild?”

Hi! I strive to be a veterinary technician but where I live there are no schools or programs at the moment and have no money to travel in regards to school. I am going to graduate soon and have already applied to a local college in hopes to pursue a bachelor's degree in bio. I am wondering if this seems like the right choice? Some of my friends have told me it is not required to go to college to become a vet tech but my mom is making me. Thank you in advance!
Hi!
Phew, this is a loaded question.
Let’s start by saying: this varies A LOT by location. It is definitely not straightforward, and every veterinary assistant/technician you ask will have a wildly different answer.
Every US state (I’m sure it varies even more wildly by COUNTRY) has different laws in regards to what people with different levels of certification can do.
I currently work as a veterinary assistant who has been trained on the job. I don’t have any official certification - I was just taught by other assistants, technicians, and doctors over a few years.
In addition, I have my bachelor’s degree in Animal Science, and am planning to go on to veterinary school in the fall.
That being said, I don’t have a lot of experience with veterinary technician schooling, exams, or licensure. Any of my followers with more experience, please feel free to add on or correct me!

According to NAVTA (The National Association of Veterinary Technicians in America) and the AVMA (The American Veterinary Medical Association), the correct term is “Veterinary Technician” in the US (as opposed to terms like “Veterinary nurse” used in other countries) - another source of debate and varied opinions!
There are people with zero official certification, people who are LICENSED veterinary technicians (LVTs), people who are CERTIFIED veterinary technicians (CVTs), and people who are REGISTERED veterinary technicians (RVTs). Again, the difference varies by state.
After completing a Veterinary Technician program (~2 years) and receiving your degree, most jobs require you to take the VTNE (Veterinary Technician National Examination) - the nationwide exam. Once passing this, depending on the state, you may have to pay a fee (no exam required - just proof of your degree and your passing exam grade). Paying the fee will make you “licensed”. I believe this needs to be repaid every 2-3 years to maintain your licensure.
In addition, there may be a mandatory amount of C.E. (Continuing Education) credits you must obtained every year to maintain your licensure.
I’m not sure if this is still in effect - but in some states, you are able to take the VTNE exam WITHOUT attending veterinary technician school. (In other states, you need to show proof of your degree in order to even take the exam). Passing the VTNE will then enable you to pay for your license.
Now, once a veterinary technician or technologist, you can also move forward by becoming a veterinary technician SPECIALIST (they usually work under a veterinary doctor who chose to specialize in a certain field and become a board certified specialist).
——
Let’s do a brief overview of the medical staff in a veterinary hospital.
Quotes below are according to the NAVTA website: VETERINARIAN: “The veterinarian is solely responsible for diagnosing, prognosing, prescribing medication and performing surgery. They are ultimately responsible for all patient care and outcomes. Most veterinarians apply for veterinary medical school admission while obtaining a bachelor degree in a compatible field. If accepted into a medical school, the course of study usually takes another four years, making that a grand total of eight years of schooling. Every state requires a veterinarian to take and pass a licensing exam. Successful candidates are given a license to practice veterinary medicine.”
BOTH VETERINARY TECHNICIANS AND VETERINARY TECHNOLOGISTS:“The veterinary Technicians and technologists are educated to be the veterinarian’s nurse, laboratory technician, radiography technician, anesthetist, surgical nurse and client educator. Many veterinary technicians and technologists are placed in a supervisory role in veterinary practices, research institutions and other employment options. Veterinary technicians can find employment in veterinary practices, biomedical research, zoo/wildlife medicine, industry, military, livestock health management, pharmaceutical sales, etc. Almost every state requires a veterinary technician/technologist to take and pass a credentialing exam. Passing this exam ensures the public that the veterinary technician has entry-level knowledge of the duties they are asked to perform in the veterinary clinic or hospital.”
That’s important to keep in mind. You don’t have to be working in a general practice small animal hospital giving vaccines to cats and dogs. You have the option to work with small animals (cats/dogs), large animals (horses/cows/sheep), exotics (birds/reptiles/rodents), zoo animals, wildlife animals. You can work in a hospital, or you can work in a research lab. You can work in industrial jobs or government/military jobs. There’s a huge variety of options.
VETERINARY TECHNICIAN: “A veterinary technician is a graduate from a two-year, American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) accredited program from a community college, college or university.”
VETERINARY TECHNOLOGIST: “A veterinary technologist has graduated from an AVMA accredited bachelor degree program.”
VTS: “A veterinary technician or technologist specialist has met the same requirements as above plus spends about 75% of their time doing a specific task and has passed a specialist certification exam administered by a Specialist Academy. Currently, there are eleven academies offering specialty certification.”
Keep in mind this is a huge amount of work. It requires a lot of experience, hard work, and studying to become a VTS.
Giving you even more variety, the VTS specializing options are:Laboratory AnimalAnesthesia and Analgesia Behavior Clinical PathologyClinical Practice - Canine/FelineClinical Practice - Avian/ExoticClinical Practice - Production Animal DentalDermatology Emergency and Critical CareEquineInternal Medicine - Small AnimalInternal Medicine - Large AnimalInternal Medicine - CardiologyInternal Medicine - OncologyInternal Medicine - Neurology NutritionOphthalmology SurgeryZoological Medicine
VETERINARY ASSISTANT: “The veterinary assistant may have training through a high school, college certificate program or through a distant learning program over the Internet. Most, however, are trained on the job by the veterinarian or the veterinary technician. Their role is to assist the veterinarian or the veterinary technician in their daily tasks as well as some basic duties such as setting up of equipment and cleaning of key areas in the clinic like the surgery suite. Some may be asked to do kennel cleaning and janitorial work as well. NAVTA has recently created a Approved Veterinary Assistant program.”
——
In an attempt to clear up some of the CVT/LVT/RVT confusion, also from the NAVTA website:
CREDENTIALED: “The current terminology recognized by decree of both NAVTA and the AVMA is “Veterinary Technician”. Whether you are an LVT, RVT or CVT the term used is mandated by the technician’s state of residence. Here are some definitions to help understand why all three terms are in use.”
CERTIFIED: “Is the recognition by the private sector of voluntarily achieved standards. Certification is usually bestowed by a private sector, nonprofit, professional association or independent board upon those members who achieve specified standards. Certification is therefore distinguished from licensure because it is generally non-governmental and voluntary. Confusion can result when the title “certified” is used for a licensed profession, such as Certified Public Accountant. Many CVTs in the U.S. are recognized by government agencies, such as boards of veterinary medical examiners, which also adds to the confusion. States that currently certify veterinary technicians include Arkansas, Arizona, Colorado, Florida, Idaho, Illinois, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Montana, Mississippi, New Hampshire, New Jersey, Oregon, Rhode Island, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Vermont, Wisconsin and Wyoming.”
REGISTERED: “Refers to the keeping of lists of practitioners by a governmental agency. It can be equivalent to licensure but may also be distinguished from licensure in that criteria for registration may not exist, and registration may not be required for practice. States that currently register veterinary technicians include California, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maine, Maryland, Missouri, New Mexico, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, South Dakota, and West Virginia.
LICENSED: “Is understood as the permission to do something as given by an authority, with the implication that one would not be permitted to do this thing without permission. To be licensed is more than a statement of qualification, as certification is. It is a statement of qualification, and it is the right to do a thing otherwise not permitted by a given authority. Both certification and licensure, however, carry the connotation of trust, belief and confidence; for without these attributes, the certification or the license would have little worth. States that license veterinary technicians include Alaska, Alabama, Delaware, Georgia, Michigan, Nebraska, Nevada, New York, North Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, and Washington.”
——
It’s actually very difficult to find Licensed Veterinary technicians, so a lot of practices use on-the-job training, and teach people (over the course of years) the different skills a veterinary technician needs. Again, the legality of this varies by state, but it is done VERY often.
Legally, if licensure is required in these states, these employees are “assistants” and have a limit to what they should be doing. Some LVTs are insulted by these employees being called “technicians”, as the LVTs worked hard through their schooling and exams to earn that title. On the other side of the spectrum, some un-credentialed employees working as technicians will tell you that licensing means nothing - and that some of the most skilled technicians never went to school.
I am not going to TOUCH this very controversial area - as I have seen both perspectives.
—-
Okay, anon. More from NAVTA:“Where are the programs for veterinary technicians/technologists?There are over 230 AVMA accredited Veterinary Technology Programs located around the United States. You can earn either an Associate Degree, which takes 2 years or a Bachelor’s Degree, which takes 4 years at the various community colleges, colleges and universities offering a veterinary technology program. There are a number of distance learning veterinary technology programs that are also AVMA accredited and can be accessed through the web. The cost varies from school to school. You should contact the school of your choice and they will be able to give you information regarding tuition, as well as financial aid.Where are the programs for veterinary assistants?Individuals interested in attending a NAVTA Approved Veterinary Assistant Program may review the current list of approved schools on NAVTAs AVA webpage. NAVTA currently approves 35 programs throughout the US and Canada with three online programs approved.”
Personally - I don’t see the point in a veterinary assistant program since most are inexperienced people who learn everything on the job. The veterinary assistant programs are very new.
—–
NAVTA on not going to school:“In most states you can’t become credentialed without graduating from an accredited veterinary technology program. Very few states currently have an “alternate route” that allows people to sit for the exam, however there are a number of prerequisites that must be met before taking the exam. In 2000 there was a ruling by the Association of American Veterinary State Boards that within ten years they will no longer allow the National Veterinary Technician Exam to be used under these circumstances. If you are in a position to attend a veterinary technology program in your state it is well worth the effort. The amount of knowledge behind the skills you already know will astound you. If you cannot physically get to a program, there are five Distance Learning Programs that are currently accredited by the AVMA that can be taken via the Internet.”
Again, I have to recommend going to an actual school if at all possible. In my experience, online classes don’t give you the hands-on experience you need in this particular field. Being in a classroom and having labs will help immensely. (In addition to getting LOTS of experience in a hospital!)
——
In regards to not having money for school - most people don’t! What kind of graduating high schooler has $50k/year for college?
Are you SURE there’s no programs around you? Check out NAVTA’s website and see if you’re missing any. If not, you unfortunately may have to travel.
You can save money by commuting and driving to class every day, but if that’s not an option, you may just have to use a loan for dorming/renting an apartment for the 2-4 years you’re away at school. You will NOT be alone in doing that.
If your mom wants you to get your bachelor’s so badly - is she willing to help you at all with college costs? If she can’t/won’t, look into (both private and government) student loans. Most people get through college on student loans, and once you have a steady salary, you can worry about paying them back.
If you’re lucky, maybe you’ll even get some financial aid that you don’t have to pay back! In addition, you can try applying for scholarships.
When you get a job, sometimes there is loan forgiveness. Not sure how this applies to veterinary technicians specifically, but if you work for a government job (public health, food animal production, military, etc.) or even a big corporation, sometimes they will offer to pay back your school loans if you commit to working for them for a certain amount of time.
——
You can definitely get your associates or bachelor’s degree while deciding what you want to do. If possible, I would aim for a program that has an Animal Science degree. You will have access to a lot more relevant classes and hands-on experience. For example, I was able to take classes like Comparative Mammalian Anatomy, Animal Nutrition, Animal Reproduction, Companion Animal Science, etc. in addition to working with laboratory animals and farm animals over 4 years. That will probably be harder to find with a program for a degree in biology. Biology will be focusing a lot on humans, in addition to plants and the environment.
However, if you definitely want to become a veterinary technician, I would just go straight to veterinary technician school.
If you (or your mom) want you to have your bachelor’s degree - it sounds like a 4-year veterinary technologist program (as opposed to a 2-year veterinary technician program) would work for both purposes. You would have your bachelor’s degree, and you would have finished a program allowing you to take the VTNE exam.

25
25 has been quite the ride so far. Two of my best friends took me on a staycation in downtown Las Vegas. We drank margaritas by the pool and ordered room service, after we walked the town all night. They treated me to a better birthday than any boyfriend could. I got to spend time with my best friend since childhood. We are born four days apart and haven’t gotten to spend a birthday together in three years. I also finally got to meet her boyfriend which in a long-distance friendship is a big deal. However, my damn car insurance went up. Isn’t that some bullshit? That’s supposed to be the best part about turning 25. I finally got accepted into a nursing program.
At 25 I thought I would’ve graduated school. I didn’t think I would have credit card or student loan debt. I didn’t think I would have made the mistakes I’ve made. I’d be a nurse by 25. That’s as far as I ever saw my future though. I don’t know what comes next after being a nurse and finishing school. I’ve never envisioned kids and marriage not that I don’t want those things, they just aren’t on my timeline. A year ago I was in tears telling both of my parents I’d be attending community college receiving an RN certificate rather than a BSN. I had such higher standards and expectations for myself. Perfectionism is what I strove for and that was an unattainable goal. I didn’t know any better back then.
I started at UNLV and I worked so hard. School was so much of my identity. I wasn’t always pretty. I wasn’t always a lot of things but I was always smart. I never had to work too hard for it either. Suddenly, I’d say third semester into college things got hard. Around this time, I also first started getting sick. I got a lung infection that later turned into pleurisy (an infection in the lining of my lung). It was to date the most painful thing I’ve experienced and had to function with. I couldn’t walk around a room. I wasn’t getting better no matter the course of antibiotics or steroids. It was then I also discovered my gallbladder was diseased and stuck inside my liver. It had to be removed at the start of the following semester. I then found out I have a stomach disease called gastroparesis. Simply put I can’t digest food naturally this leads to a limited diet and medication with my meals. This was the start of such a rollercoaster. I was so sick all of the time. I was in and out of the hospital. Multiple trips to the ER. Multiple trips to my general practitioner. I would get IV fluids, GI cocktails and muscle relaxers just to study for a final. It was really hard to work and go to school full time with everything else going on. There was a time after losing my Uncle that I was working so hard and would teach other students the material then do poorly on the exam. I didn’t know it then but it was my anxiety taking over. I didn’t stop and take time off to mourn my Uncle or deal with the complications of his death. There was plenty of “family stuff” that I haven’t decided if I want to write about publicly yet going on.
Eventually after a failed roommate situation and totaling my car things become even tougher financially. I was working two, three jobs struggling to literally just make the ends meet. I got into serving which allowed me to make more money and moved in with my dad as roommates. This freed me up a lot financially. I went from UNLV to Nevada State College and again I was working and going to school full time. My health was in better shape than it had been in but I still wasn’t a 100%. I still hadn’t sought treatment for my anxiety and depression. I still didn’t know that I even had anxiety and depression. Long story short my GPA fell just below the requirements for their program and the time it would take to try to raise it just wasn’t worth it anymore. I realized a program with less classes might just be a better fit for me as I am still working full time. A year ago I was crying about where I would be today. I felt like I fell so short of my goals. My dad made a really interesting point that put things into perspective for me. I was telling him how if I knew then what I know now I’d do things differently. (Get my RN, start working and then get my BSN). He told me maybe you weren’t ready then. That must be one of the best things my dad has ever told me. He was right. I don’t think I could have gone through all the tragedy and tribulations I did as a nurse. At least a successful nurse. Even the very worst things that I have experienced have made me a stronger, better person. Even the rape showed me that you can do all the things to protect yourself and still end up hurt. That’s given me a sense of invincibility though. It’s a reminder in the back of my head that I’ve lived through that I can live through anything.
Today I’m the happiest I’ve quite possibly ever been. I’ve accomplished all but two goals I set for myself this year. I may not have it all figured it out but I am okay with that. I’m excited for the next half of my twenties as I’m sure they’ll be better than the first. I am going into them with so much more life experience, mental and physical strength. I’ve made so many strides in the last three months alone. I’ve started developing a plan how to manage my self care, work and life balance when school starts. It’s been a long road to reach this place. There’s been hard work in and out of therapy sessions. All the intakes I did and attending outpatient programs in behavioral hospitals. Dragging myself out of bed when the depression was pulling me in. Throughout it all I wouldn’t change a thing. It’s brought me to a place where I have a life that is worth living. There was a time, a long period of time where I thought about ending my life EVERY single day. I didn’t think that would ever pass. I didn’t think I would ever be able to “fix” me. So, if you ever think you can’t or its impossible to come out the other side of this, it is. I promise it is. I may not know exactly what you’re feeling or where you are. I do know what absolute rock bottom, cannot live one more day like this feels like. I did it and you can to. If you found this post helpful or insightful please feel free to like, comment, share and follow. https://allisfigureoutable.com/2017/06/04/25/
