[ID: Digital artwork featuring a collection of ocs with arthropod familiars. The 1st image is a lineup of 4 adults, including (left to right): A ducky isopod man named Tito Chen with a pompadour, sunglasses, and flashy suit, a shorter man named Dante-Enriquez Rivera with a toadbug familiar, curly hair in a bun, facial hair, and suspenders, a person named Blizzard Dunkley with a buzz-cut, agrias butterfly familiar, long blue coat, red-and-blue glasses, and large earrings, and finally a woman named Yolanda Sali with a harvestman familiar, in a nurses coat, stethoscope around her neck. Next drawing features 2 new adults, the first of which is named Maikel Miguel Patagara, who has multi-colored hair, prominent freckles, overalls and a prosthetic on their right foot, alongside a cayenne tick familiar. The second iteration of vim has eye shadows and an unhappier expression, and two prosthetic for each foot, seemingly home-made unlike the previous one. Zi is also wearing a necklace with a giant cat-eye type jewel, alongside a coat that’s on the 2nd person in the drawing - a little note mentions that this is xyr look “after Ireneo died”. Ireneo (Maria) Ressa, the 2nd person, has short grey hair, a long, fluffy coat, black cloth gloves, and some vitiligo, alongside a sowbug familiar. He's holding a notebook, pen tucked behind eir ear, and the 2nd iteration shows them without the coat. The final drawing is a doodle dump of Ireneo and Maikel mostly, showing such things as: them at a bar, Ireneo’s arm around Maikel’s shoulders as she says, “Hey me & my partner saw you from across the bar and we think your vibe sucks ass. Can we beat you up”, them kissing, Maikel at a pottery wheel while Ireneo watches, their familiars with hearts around them, and finally Maikel holding a phone up to their ear and saying, “Hey could you come pick me up they’re pelting me with rotten fruit in the town square again”. End ID]
Been thinking about my bug familiar story again

Footballers’ Wives
I have no idea why I’m doing a show from 2002, but it seems to have been a classic year for vintage TV. In addition, the Desperate Housewives post whipped up a storm of reads, so I’ve decided that wives is a popular theme, and this show is about wives as well (clue’s in the title). Then, I’m amplifying that with the power of nostalgia, after the Buffy The Vampire Slayer post drew more attention than I was prepared for: turns out we like to relive our memories of shows from when we were younger and less jaded, safely in the EU and certain of an economically prosperous future.
The next uninteresting detail I will talk you through at length is the orthography of the show’s name itself. After some soul searching, I’ve decided to go with Footballers’ Wives, as you’ll see from the header on the post. This is significant because at any one time I am devoting 20% of my life’s energy to grammatical pedantry. Even at the age of 17, when this week’s programme was first broadcast, my teenage self was appalled at the lack of plural possessive apostrophe concluding the opening credits: Footballers Wives. You’re only young once, so I’m glad I spent that time obsessing about punctuation. Otherwise, how on earth are you supposed to know that the wives belong to the footballers? It just looks like a strange, unconnected list. But then, matters were made worse once I reminded myself how things really appeared: footballers wive$. I won’t unpick why this is an abomination in my eyes (and if you don’t know why, then get out now please), but it does serve handily to illustrate the level of class on offer in this show. In short, there was none. Let’s crack on, then.
But first, it’s 2018, so let’s dispel the myth that wives are the property of their husbands (with or without the appropriate apostrophe to indicate this possession). Yes, in this day and age, people can’t wait to rush up the aisle in order to spend thousands of pounds on flowers that nobody will remember and to secure a sofa buddy for future series of The Crown, but vows tend to be more about an equal partnership rather than referring to any duty of obedience. But this was the beauty of Footballers’ Wives – the ladies wore the trousers. Everything about the menfolk was incidental. There were merely possessions to trade. Even their footballing prowess was limited to a couple of lines in the script – almost no actual match footage ever appealed. For someone with better things to do than sit through any sort of ballsport (such as watching reruns of dinnerladies) this only added to the programme’s appeal.
Let’s look at Tanya Turner, the ur-WAG. Throughout the five series (yes, five!) she ended up in all manner of relationships, working through around half of the Earls Park FC first team, a proportion of the support staff and anyone else who just happened to be passing for that matter. This wasn’t a search for love, though, but a quest to keep herself in acrylic nails and extraordinarily tacky outfit choices with no expense spared. Once ex-captain Jason was dispatched, she fought for a place in new signing Conrad Gates’ bed (despite his straightened hair), dallied with sports agent/chairwoman Hazel Bailey and even found the time to get herself astride Frank Laslett, the overweight, over-age chairman of the club, specifically with the intention of shagging him to death. Imagine talking about that storyline in the office the next day. But the combination of cocaine, booze and vigorous love making did the job – our Tanya got what she wanted out of each chap (or chapette, in the case of Hazel) and then moved on to the next one. Played with bags of aplomb by Zöe Lucker (whom I don’t seem to spot on TV these days, but ought to be a national treasure), Tanya was a popular creation, rooted for by an audience that was fully entertained by her outrageous behaviour.
In fact, the show suffered whenever she was absent. IMDB tells me that Gillian Taylforth (Cathy from Eastenders, everyone) appeared in the most episodes, playing Jackie Pascoe, the overbearing pushy mother. Yet, my most memorable character is Nurse Dunkley. The name in itself is a comic moniker for someone you’re never going to take seriously. But her arc was as sinister as they come: caring for Frank Laslett during his coma (obviously) she went from an apparently incidental background artist to front-of-camera abuser, pursuing a physical relationship with the unconscious man in her care, while whispering sweet nothings to him in her simpleton-sounding northern accent. Her spectacles practically steaming up with lust is an image that still haunts me to this day.
But this was what we all tuned in for: far-fetched melodrama. But you can watch that in most soap operas, so the attraction is better qualified as: far-fetched melodrama involving wealthy, mostly attractive people in glamorous settings. Which is loads better. Babies were swapped. Boob implants caught fire. Murders were attempted and completed. Sex videos were leaked. Joan Collins popped in. Peter Stringfellow popped in. This was the level of Footballers’ Wives. As a result, it was wickedly fun. I’m not ashamed to admit I also really enjoyed the foul language and frequent nudity – seeing someone being told to f*** off when their boobs are peaking over the duvet is oddly gratifying when you’re a teenager with punctuation-related anxiety.
Sadly, the show ended in 2006; it may well have been shagged to death itself to be honest. I don’t even know if there’s any way to watch it these days, shy of trawling car boots for the old DVDs and then squinting at the appalling image quality with your HD-accustomed eyeballs, before realising things look appalling due to the noughties fashions the show so willingly embraced. In fact, I don’t even recommend re-watching; times have changed, and the old show’s website still exists here, reminding you how crude the old internet was. Have a click around and think of times past. This is the trash that brought millions to ITV’s peak schedule. At least now we have Love Island, eh?

AFL: Bulldogs' AFL flag experience an advantage
AFL: Bulldogs’ AFL flag experience an advantage
sport, national-sport-news Tough midfielder Josh Dunkley believes the Western Bulldogs’ AFL fairytale experience from five years ago will give them an edge over Melbourne in this season’s premiership decider. In 2016, the Bulldogs famously won four consecutive cut-throat finals, rising from seventh on the ladder to end a 62-year flag drought. It left Melbourne nursing the competition’s longest…

5 Lessons Learned – AFL Round 6
1. Melbourne is good
They are real and they’re spectacular.
To all the Melbourne fans reading this – YOU ARE GOOD.
Surge football.
More majors, for your pure enjoyment
https://t.co/93qdmRkbee#FiredUp pic.twitter.com/Po6SpkykMT
— Melbourne Demons (@melbournefc) April 25, 2021
A 6-0 start to the season, high-pressure, star players all flying and boy did they out-Richmond Richmond with a six-goal win on Saturday night.
Every Dees fan around Australia is up and about with a big smile on their face, they are starting to believe.
These are the Monday’s you crave all of the hot-takes and if you’ve been scrolling looking for more pats on the back the way of the Demons, you’ve come to the right place.
I wonder how the 15 Ladbrokes punters who backed Melbourne at $26 for the flag at the start of the season are feeling right now?
The Dees are now fourth in line for premiership betting at $6.50 and will make it a 7-0 start to 2021 on Sunday when they face the bottom of the ladder Kangaroos with Melbourne opening the betting at $1.02 head to head.
"I think the way we're playing is inspiring our crowd. It's inspiring our supporters." – Simon Goodwin following last night's win

— Melbourne Demons (@melbournefc) April 25, 2021
When it comes to following a footy team, the journey can be as fun as the destination and every Melbourne fan should make hay while the sun shines.
2. ..So are the Bulldogs
Are we going to party like it’s 1954?
Check out the #AFLGiantsDogs match report: https://t.co/1f57jHEHnY
— AFL (@AFL) April 23, 2021
The Western Bulldogs have started the season 6-0 with a solid win over GWS, who challenged them on Friday night, but the Dogs ultimately blew them away in the last quarter.
They will go in $1.52 favourites against a defeated and injury-riddled reigning premiers Richmond ($2.55) at the MCG on Friday night.
Injuries are starting to bite at Whitten Oval as well with Tim English, Josh Dunkley and poor old Lin Jong but it appears they bat-deep.
Will see the debut of no.1 draft pickon Friday night?
He kicked five goals in the televised VFL game for Footscray on Thursday
Jesse Hogan (four goals) and Jamarra Ugle-Hagan (five goals) put on strong showings in the VFL on Thursday night. Should either of them get the AFL call up next week? pic.twitter.com/hUCpdgWkd0
— AFL (@AFL) April 24, 2021
You’d fancy the Dogs against Richmond, but you’d have to be foolish to write off the champions.
3. Injuries suck
A real big statement here, I know.
We mentioned in lesson 2 that injury got the better of poor old Lin Jong on Friday night and then injury got the better of two of the absolute superstars of the game over the weekend.
Lachie Neale (ankle surgery) is out indefinitely pic.twitter.com/CfNslHjU7g
— 7AFL (@7AFL) April 25, 2021
Lachie Neale suffered an ankle injury in Brisbane’s win over Carlton on Saturday, meaning the reigning Brownlow medalist is likely to miss 6-8 weeks of football.
From a punting perspective, all Brownlow bets are off on Neale who opened the betting to go back-to-back at $6 at the start of the season.
It’s a shame, but hopefully we’ll see him back on the field later in the season.
Dustin Martin has been ruled out of Friday night’s game against the Bulldogs with Dusty being ruled out with concussion, but it’s been revealed he’s been nursing an injured foot in recent weeks.
. @Richmond_FC are licking their wounds after a night from hell against the @melbournefc – a miserable milestone for Tiger Dustin Martin, he'll miss Friday night's @westernbulldogs blockbuster through concussion, but that's not his only concern. @SeanSowerby7 #7NEWS pic.twitter.com/rPHaKWlFlK
— 7NEWS Melbourne (@7NewsMelbourne) April 25, 2021
The Tigers will also miss the likes of Dylan Grimes and Dion Prestia.
It’s a better problem to have in April rather than in September.
4. Hawthorn v Adelaide was game of the Round
Now, we could look into the likes of how other contenders Port Adelaide and Geelong fared on the weekend or we can look back and smile with what transpired in the Hawks v Crows clash Launceston.
What a game! What a win!
#AFLHawksCrows pic.twitter.com/63nM7G5jsW
— Hawthorn FC (@HawthornFC) April 25, 2021
The 1pm Sunday off-broadway clash between two sides that are not likely to feature in the finals was an absolute delight to watch.
End-to-end, fast ball movement, high-scoring, accurate – especially in the case of the Crows 15 goals without a behind, defense thrown out the window, red footy in the daytime, the stunning five goals on debut from Adelaide’s Riley Thilthorpe and five goals on the other end from Hawk Jacob Koschitzke.
Welcome to the big time Riley Thilthorpe
#AFLHawksCrows pic.twitter.com/yrmnoDUzke
— AFL (@AFL) April 25, 2021
Hawthorn was able to come back from 32 points in the third quarter, finishing with a 15-12 (102) to 16-3 (99) win in their Tassie fortress.
Imagine if there was hindsight multis? Back the Over, Jacob Koschitzke to score 2+ goals @ $2.85 and Riley Thilthorpe @ $2.45 to score 2+ Goals. If only.
Both of these young guns (Thilthorpe – $11, Koschitzke $26) are worth considering for the Rising Star this year.
If you wanna watch a replay of any game from Round 6, 2021 – Hawthorn v Adelaide is top billing.
5. Collingwood isn’t good.
We all know what’s transpiring at Collingwood.
If you are a Magpies fan and you’re reading this – you’ve clearly been doom scrolling.
Nathan Buckley: My future is not an excuse or a distraction https://t.co/zLUYGdCn02
— Daniel Cherny
(@DanielCherny) April 25, 2021
While you are 17th on the ladder this week, the Pies are now equal 6th on the line of wooden spoon betting at $21, $5 to make the eight, $26 for the top four and $51 for the miracle turnaround premiership.
The good news is, we’ve got the Pies down as $1.40 favorites as they host the Gold Coast Suns ($3) this Saturday arvo at the MCG.
I’m not going to do a deep-dive into the problems at the Magpies, but my best tip is to stop reading articles like this and give all of the talkback radio and Monday night footy shows a miss.
The same advice applies to supporters of the West Coast Eagles and St Kilda.

Hi all,
October is UK Black History Month, so I’m going to be sharing posts this month featuring iconic Black British/Britain-based women.
Mary Prince was born in Bermuda on the 1st October 1788, making today her 233rd birthday. While visiting Britain, a change in the law allowed her to escape the family she was enslaved by, and she began working for the Anti-Slavery Society. During this time, she wrote her autobiography, “The History of Mary Prince”, believed to be the earliest autobiography of a black woman published in England. The book was so popular it was reprinted twice in its first year, and she has been credited as playing a ‘crucial role in the abolition campaign’. Unfortunately little is known about her later life, or when she died.
Mary Prince is featured in a permanent exhibition in the London Docklands Museum, and is commemorated by a plaque near where she lived in Bloomsbury.

“Temeka came in with a painful knee. Before applying ANF Devices, she could only squat within about a 20-degree range, which was VERY painful.
After the first session, within 15 minutes, she could increase the range to 45 degrees with minor pain.
A week later, Temeka came back, and she still had some residual pain, so we discarded her with higher frequency devices this time, and bang... no pain, and she was able to get to 90 degrees.” - Claire Dunkley, #nurse from #australia Claire Dunkley

Um so the midwife who helped deliver Princess Charlotte... let me introduce you to Jacqui Dunkley-Bent. I dont know about anyone else but while I was in the hospital I had a close relationship with the nurse who watched over me. They even sent me a personal Christmas card.
“I’d bet anything on the fact that Meghan’s the first person of African descent Kate has interacted with on a personal level, meaning in a non-working or engagement capacity. Kate just strikes me as the type of girl who’d never associate with nonwhite people in school and uni. Besides she barely seems to have had any friends in general growing up and even if she wanted to have poc friends I’m sure a snob like her mum would dissuade her from the idea and we all know Kate does whatever Carole orders“ - Submitted by Anonymous

Match report: Dogs win thriller over Tigers
A BRILLIANT final term from Clay Smith has helped the Western Bulldogs overcome a slow start and snatch a five-point win at Etihad Stadium on Saturday night.
The Tigers led by 32 points when Jack Riewoldt goaled early in the second quarter, but the Bulldogs chipped away at the deficit over the next two terms and hit the lead for the first time when Smith goaled at the 16-minute mark of the final term.
The Western Bulldogs led by five points at the time, which was the margin at the final siren, but they survived some anxious final moments before securing an 11.14 (80) to 11.9 (75) victory.
Full match details and stats
Smith kicked two goals in the final term – and an equal game-high four for the match – and, two minutes after his final major, found Lachie Hunter 35m from goal with a superbly centred pass.
Hunter’s converted set shot put the Bulldogs 11 points up, but the Tigers were not done, with Riewoldt hitting back with a goal at the 23-minute mark that brought his side back within four points.
The Bulldogs hung on from there, joining Richmond on five wins for the season.
WATCH: The thrilling last two minutes
Riewoldt kicked the 500th goal of his career when he scored his first major of the game midway through the opening quarter, and finished with four goals for the game to be one of the Tigers’ best players.
Marcus Bontempelli (27 possessions, 10 tackles and one goal) was outstanding for the Bulldogs through the midfield and in attack, while Luke Dahlhaus (31 possessions), Jack Macrae (30) and Lachie Hunter (28) were prime movers through the midfield.
Key defender Marcus Adams (two goals) spent the night in attack and gave the Bulldogs an aerial presence, taking a crucial contested mark at half-back late in the match, while Tom Boyd gave the Dogs a lift in the ruck after a slow start to the game.
Bulldogs coach Luke Beveridge was pleased with the pluck his team showed in its comeback, but said there was definite room for improvement.
“We’re making extremely hard work of (our wins). It doesn’t help when the opposition have come to play as well as they did tonight. Richmond were very good,” Beveridge said.
“We were disappointed with our start to the game and our efficiency was very poor, but Richmond just capitalised on everything we didn’t do well and they torched us early.
“Again our players showed how big their hearts are. We’d love them to be able to capitalise on their endeavours a little bit easier.”
GAME BREAKER: Smith saves his best until last
The Tigers were brave in defeat, showing their 76-point flogging from Adelaide last Sunday was not a true reflection of their standing in 2017.
Dustin Martin (28 possessions, six clearances and two goals) did all he could to get Richmond over the line, while Shaun Grigg (29 possessions and one goal) and Josh Caddy (20 and one) were also valuable contributors through the middle of the ground, and Alex Rance provided his typical mix of defence and counter-attack in the back half.
Richmond coach Damien Hardwick could not fault his team’s effort, but said the Bulldogs’ edge in class had told at the end of the game.
“We probably lacked a little bit of courage towards the end of the last quarter when the game probably tightened up,” Hardwick said.
“In fairness, the pressure around the ball was pretty high. I think the Bulldogs’ pressure rating soared through the roof that last quarter and it’s why they sit where they do, We just probably couldn’t get the ball out of defensive 50 cleanly enough to get a nice efficient shot on goal at the other end.
“We probably butchered the ball inside 50 a little bit too at various stages, but there are a lot of positives to take out of the game tonight for us.”
The Tigers came out roaring from the first bounce, opening their account in little more than a minute when Martin accepted a Riewoldt handball and ran into goal unopposed.
The Bulldogs hit back soon after when Jake Stringer soccered a brilliant goal on the half-volley, but the Tigers then took over, kicking four unanswered goals to go into the first break with a 26-point lead.
Five talking points: Western Bulldogs v Richmond
Riewoldt kicked two of those– the first after he lost opponent Zaine Cordy in a marking contest midway through the first term was his 500th – and Dan Butler snapped the last after brilliantly gathering a half-volley at full pace.
The Bulldogs used Josh Dunkley, 190cm, as their ruckman for most of the first term as Tom Boyd was stationed in attack, with Richmond, primarily thanks to debutant Ivan Soldo, winning the quarter’s hit-outs 20-1, including a 6-0 advantage at centre bounces.
Defender Fletcher Roberts won the Dogs’ only hit-out for the first term, but his team still managed to win the clearances 11-9.
When Riewoldt kicked his third goal in the opening 90 seconds of the second quarter, the Tigers had kicked five unanswered goals and led by 32 points.
Tom Boyd returned to the ruck for the Bulldogs in the second quarter and helped arrest the Tigers’ ruck dominance, winning 10 hit-outs for the term as the Dogs won that stat 11-9.
The Bulldogs also started to get on top in general play but struggled to convert in front of goal, kicking 3.5 for the quarter.
They cut the Tigers’ lead to 13 points when Smith goaled with a left-foot snap at the 19-minute mark, but a late Martin goal helped Richmond go into half-time with an 18-point lead.
MEDICAL ROOM Western Bulldogs: Jake Stringer was injured in a tackle by Brandon Ellis midway through the third term, appearing to injure his right knee. He went down to the Dogs’ rooms for assessment and, although he returned to the bench without any strapping on his knee, he did not take any further part in the game. The Bulldogs ruled out any ACL damage after the game, but Stringer will need to undergo scans. Josh Dunkley injured his left shoulder early in the final term and left the ground immediately nursing his arm. He also did not return and Beveridge confirmed after the game that he had dislocated his shoulder and faced a stretch on the sidelines. Jason Johannisen came to the interchange bench late in the second quarter to have his right wrist assessed but returned to the field soon after and played out the game.
Richmond: Nick Vlastuin came from the ground early in the second after appearing to injure his right shoulder in a contest. The defender went into the rooms to be assessed and did not return. Tigers coach Damien Hardwick was unsure of the extent of Vlastuin’s injury at his post-match media conference, saying he expected the defender to have scans on Saturday night.
NEXT UP The Bulldogs face a six-day break before taking on West Coast at Domain Stadium next Friday night, while the Tigers host Fremantle at the MCG next Sunday.
