It's Pigeon Appreciation Day so you know what that means: Pigeon Facts!

June 13th is Pigeon Appreciation Day. Historically pigeons have served humans as sources of food through their meat and eggs, as war animals much like horses and dogs, as means of communication, and were once widely kept as racing pigeons in coops on large city buildings. They were released in large numbers from their coops when pigeon races lost popularity/profit which contributed to the eventual high population of these feathered friends we see today.

In the 18th Century, due to it's great value and part in the making of gunpower, King George I/II (not 100% which sorry) of England declared that pigeon poo was property of the Crown. I'm not shitting you. ;)

Kept as pets, Pigeons are very affectionate birds and make much less noise compared to birds such as Parakeets or Macaws. No noise complaints from the neighbors, or any bleeding eardrums! ;) Pigeons are about as smart as a three-year-old, so they can learn simple tricks, too.

There are several pigeons who are decorated war heroes (if not "officially", they are heroes in my heart)! Notable examples are Cher Ami who you can find at the Smithsonian Museum in the "Price of Freedom: Americans at War" exhibit in Washington DC, and White Vision, Winkie and Tyke who received the PDSA Dickins Medal established in 1943 by Maria Dickin. It's awarded to animals that showed "conspicuous gallantry or devotion to duty while serving or associated with any branch of the Armed Forces or Civil Defence Units". White Vision, Winkie and Tyke are the first recipients of this medal; they are just 3 of the 32 total pigeons (last I checked) who have ever been awarded this honor!

In 2001 on March 24th, Randy Johnson of the Arizona Diamondbacks accidentally hit a flying bird from the pitcher's mound with a fastball during a spring training game against the San Francisco Giants. The speed of the fastball was unknown (ball needs to reach home plate in order to tell), but it was certainly fast enough to prove fatal for the bird, the incident was also caught on camera. Not the first time it's happened in baseball, but it might be the most famous example. (From photos I've seen of the Giant's player who picked up the bird and brought it off the field, the bird was an unlucky Mourning Dove who was just flying in the wrong place at the wrong time.)

The famous Serbian American engineer and physicist Nikola Tesla had an odd affinity for pigeons during his lifetime. He often took sick and injured pigeons back to his home to nurse them back to health, and regularly spent hours the park each week feeding them. He even kept the windows open to his hotel suite so they could visit him, including one white female pigeon. "I loved that pigeon as a man loves a woman ... As long as I had her, there was a purpose to my life.”

Sam had been off with the girl he’d been seeing, and Natalie was busy with her new job. That left Dean alone, trapped in the familiar cycle of overthinking and restless energy.

It wasn’t new. Nights like this had always ended the same way for him: heading to a bar, hoping to find something—someone—to fill the emptiness. Talking to women used to be second nature, like breathing. But things had changed. He was older now, and though he still had his one-night stands to blow off steam, they didn’t leave him feeling the way they used to. In the back of his mind, something had shifted. Sitting on one of the outdoor benches, her face illuminated by the streetlights, was Natalie. She had her phone in her hand, scrolling through something, completely unaware that Dean was there.

His heart skipped a beat.

He hadn't expected to see her, especially not at this hour. She wasn't the kind of person to be out late, not like him, but there she was—looking comfortable and a little lost in thought, like she was taking a break from everything. It made something inside him stir, and before he knew it, his feet had carried him toward her.

Natalie, who came out to just get one drink, glanced up as he approached, her hazel eyes widening slightly in surprise. "Dean?" she asked, slipping her phone into her jacket pocket. "What are you doing here?"

Dean stood there for a second, unsure of what to say. The truth—that he had just left another woman's bed, but his mind had been stuck on her—wasn't something he could just throw out there. "Uh, just needed some air," he said, his voice gruff, but not unkind. "Couldn't sleep."

Dean glanced over at her, his eyes tracing the soft curve of her face. She was relaxed, her guard down, and in that moment, something about her felt... right. The thought hit him harder than he expected, and he quickly looked away, not wanting her to catch the emotion that had flickered through his eyes.

"Needed to get out of there for a bit," he muttered. "Sam's been off with his girl, and... I don't know, just didn't feel like sticking around."

Natalie nodded, understanding. "Yeah, I've been busy with work this week. Haven't had much time for anything else lately." She glanced down at her hands, then back up at him. "It's weird, though. Even with everything going on, I keep thinking about the bunker. About... you and Sam. Like, I miss it when I'm not around."

Dean felt something tug in his chest at her words. He wasn't sure why, but hearing her say that made him feel... something. With the actual "Frasier" reboot now come and gone, I feel compelled to re-post this "Totally Real Episode Guide" I wrote for Salon almost three years ago (March, 2021)....

Episode 12.1 ("Howdy Podner!"): Dr. Frasier Crane is back in Seattle after living for 14 years at a WH Smith in O'Hare Airport while trying to book a return flight from Chicago with a declined NBC corporate card. He is now in the third year of his daily living-room based podcast, "Freud Not." After ten minutes lambasting his listeners for never phoning in for advice, only a returned call from the Apple Store reveals to Frasier that, technically, he cannot have a podcast if he does not have a webops platform. Or if his laptop has an operating system less recent than Windows XP. His 2005 lifetime FCC ban from radio following an on-air incident with Robin Quivers (guest star Issa Rae) is briefly mentioned but not discussed.

Episode 12.2 ("You Might Feel a Little Prick"): Now up and running on Patreon, Frasier suddenly cuts off a podcast episode with a survivor of Stockholm Syndrome (Hope Hicks) when he gets an alert on his phone that there's an open slot available for the latest, most exclusive Covid vaccine, the Moderna Lisa. When the urgent care nurse (Billy Eichner) asks for an emergency family member contact, Frasier hastily scribbles "Lillith S." and a profile link from JDate.

Episode 12.3 ("Driver's Oedipus"): His thirty-second birthday approaching, Frasier's now grown, multi-issued son Frederick (Sean Hayes in a receding blond wig even though he is only heard on the phone) lets his dad know that he is motoring into town for an Oath Keepers 3K Fun Run and makes the old man promise to hook him up with courtside seats for a Sonics game, even though it's August and the NBA team left Seattle 13 years ago. Wounded, and still bitter over losing his medical license after a psychiatric journal published his meant-to-be satirical essay, "Transference in Inflatable Patients," Frasier feels compelled to tell Frederick, "Remember, you're an only child. Just like me…."

Episode 12.4 ("La-Z-Goy"): After finally selling his late father's pea-green recliner on eBay for $112.47 (local pick-up only), Frasier has second thoughts while waiting for the buyer (Riz Ahmed) to show up. He fondly reminisces about a trip to Howard Johnson's when his dad was an active duty cop and momentarily confused the Heimlich maneuver with a sleeper hold on a distressed diner (flashback with Artie Lange playing both parts). When the buyer (Daveed Diggs, after a scheduling conflict with Ahmed) finally arrives, he notices the side lever of the chair is inoperable. Frasier repays him the $112.47, plus $60 to cart the recliner away, plus two bottles of Febreze.  

Episode 12.5 ("All in the Fluidity"): Frasier's podcast is about to get its first revenue producing sponsor, the gender-neutral footwear company Matriarch. But Frasier blows the deal when he keeps insisting to the Matriarch marketing team (Alex Borstein, Dan Levy) that his pronoun should be who/whom. The sudden loss of a reliable income stream forces him to cancel his search for a new housekeeper, now down to six finalists (Busy Phillips, Amber Ruffin, Claire Foy, Justina Machado, Moses Ingram, William Zabka) who were to compete in a Wagner lip synch battle for the job.

Episode 12.6 ("Have a Tryst Kit"): His 90-day Tinder suspension suddenly lifted after only four days when the complainant (Amy Sedaris) blames the misunderstanding on a salt deficiency, Frasier renews his Quixotic search for companionship. Unfortunately, minutes into his triumphant return, he dislocates two fingers after swiping right too overzealously. When the urgent care nurse (Ohio Rep. Jim Jordan) asks for an emergency family contact, he writes down the number of the guy who carted off his dad's recliner. In the closing cliffhanger scene, Frasier is seen ringing an apartment buzzer with his free hand, a clutch of pansies and a bag of IV saline under his arm.

Episode 12.7 ("Star Bucks"): Frasier celebrates the ten-year anniversary of the closing of Café Nervosa by showing up with a thermos of Kona, a seat stick umbrella and a copy of "Alfred Adler: Sicko-phant" in front of the SmileDirect that now occupies the space. While the manager (Ken Jeong) calls the police, a well-dressed couple in their mid-forties (Vincent Kartheiser and Luke Kirby) approach. They recognize Frasier instantly and ask him to help get their daughter (a Fanning TBA) into Harvard. When the flattered celeb shrink asks what he can do, they hand him a bag with $250,000 in cash and make him open a Venmo account at gunpoint. Upon seeing the glint of the gun barrel, the assistant manager (Miles Brown) calls the police back and tells them not to bother.

Episode 12.8 ("Seemed Like a Good Idea at the Time…"): Shot documentary style, Paramount+ execs and showrunners stop by Kelsey Grammer's trailer with a magnum of non-alcoholic champagne and news that they've been able to sign original cast member Dan Butler (Dan Butler) to reprise his role as Frasier's unapologetic, misogynistic co-worker Bob "Bulldog" Briscoe. The last 20 minutes is a montage of a Tesla pulling away and a mostly union crew breaking the set down to a looped medley of "There Used to be a Ballpark"/"Crazy"/"It's Raining Men" (BMI license fees pending).

Syverson laid there for a long while after they tucked in, staring up at the ceiling with one arm wrapped around Amelia and his hand behind his head. His mind still reeled from the information he had been given and he struggled to believe it. He was wanting, waiting for someone to call psych, to tell him that it was all just a joke and laugh at him for going along with it. He would even laugh with them, but wanting something didn’t make it real, didn’t negate the man in his medbay with his leg in tatters. He thought back to when Locke and Chase pulled Johnson from the truck and he saw his ruined leg, the armor plating on his thigh hadn’t seemed to stop this thing at all, or even slow it down. If its claws could do that to something that could stop bullets, his men would be easy pickings in their standard issue gear.

“Hey.” He heard and looked down briefly, seeing Amelia awake and looking at him, her chin resting on his chest.

“Hey.” He echoed.

“Where’s your head?” She asked, reaching up and smoothing the furrow between his brows with her thumb. He sighed at her touch, taking her hand in his own and pressing a kiss to her palm before holding it to his chest over his heart.

“Is this how you felt?” He asked and there was a long moment of silence.

“Yeah.” She said finally, “Yeah it is.”

“You were also dealing with the fact that you just lost your parents to one of these things.”

“Uh huh.”

“Fuck, Amy.” He said, covering his face with his hand. “I keep hoping that it’s just one really bad joke.”

“First few nights after it happened, I kept waiting for my parents to come home and be all “Surprise! We’re alive!”, it wasn’t until their funerals, closed caskets, that it really hit me.” She said, “Someone from Chimera was there at the service, and approached me afterward.”

“Is that how you met’em?” He asked, looking at her, but she shook her head.

“One of their teams had been tracking it, but they got there too late. It was dead, my parents were dead, and I was bleeding out on the ground.” His arm tightened around her. “They extracted me to a nearby compound and patched me up, told me the truth that yeah, what I saw, what I killed, was real. It’s how I met Locke.”

“Locke?”

“He was the leader of that team.”

“Shit.” He said, “Well that explains a few things. How’d you kill it?”

“Dad kept a bowie knife in the car.” She said.

“Fuck.”

“I got lucky.” She said, “Really lucky.”

“How do you even kill one of these things?”

“Sustained firepower.” She said, “Or a seventeen-year-old cheerleader with an eighteen-inch knife and a fight-or-flight reflex lodged very firmly into the fight response.”

“How many of these things have you taken out?”

“Just the one.” She said and his mind connected the dots.

“You’re telling me that this is the first time you’ve seen one of these things again since the night you lost your parents.” He said and she nodded. “Shit.”

“Locke didn’t even want me on this one, thought I’d be too in my own head to focus.”

“What changed his mind?”

“Higher-ups thought otherwise and they gave him an order. Made me lead for I don’t know what reason.” She said, “You’re handling it a lot better than I did, by the way.”

“I’m not going through what you did on top of all of it.”

“True.” She said and sighed, pressing a kiss to his chest that warmed him. “We need to get some sleep.”

“Yeah, we do.” He agreed and gave a sigh that shook his chest as he shifted a bit on the cot, settling in and closing his eyes.

The next day he walked across base to the medbay, checking in with the nurses before going to where Johnson was in recovery. He was sitting up in a bed, IV hooked into his hand and covered with a blanket. They had gotten him out of his armor and uniform and into a gown and it looked very odd seeing him like that.

“Hey, man.” Syverson said and Johnson looked up from the book he was reading, a small smile tugging at the corner of his mouth.

“Hey, brother!” He said and they grasped each other's forearms in greeting.

“How ya feelin’?”

“My leg kills and the drugs they gave me for it are shit.” He said and Syverson snorted in amusement.

“I’ll see if I can’t get you something better.”

“Appreciate it.” Johnson said and there was a pause. “Chase stopped by earlier.”

“Yeah?”

“Told me they pulled you into the loop.”

“Yeah.” He said with a nod.

“Thanks for pinch hittin’ for me.”

“Don’t mention it.” He said, “How long until you’re up and about?”

“Few days. They wanted to know what did it. I told them local wildlife so they want to watch for signs of infection.”

“After that?”

“After that,” He said and sighed, “If it’s not sorted by then, I’m getting shipped back to the states. I’m no use to the others hobbling around on crutches, only get in the way.”

“Okay.” He said, “Well, get some rest and heal up. That’s an order.”

“Sir, yes Sir!” Johnson said, giving him a mock salute making him laugh and Syverson left medical shaking his head and smiling. Making his way back to his office, he wasn’t surprised to see Amelia there looking over the newest recon report. He had ordered the scouts to look out for anything unusual along with their normal procedures and the first report had come in.

“Anything stand out?” He asked but she shook her head, taking a sip of her coffee.

“Nothing so far, just the normal stuff. These things know how to hide during the day and unless you know what you’re looking at, it’s easy to miss.” She said and he nodded, going over to the sat comm against the wall and powering it up, punching in a number and waiting with the ringing tone until someone picked up.

“General Grant’s office.”

“This is Captain Syverson of Warhorse.” He said leaning back against the cabinet with his arms crossed over his chest, “I need to speak to General Grant.”

“The General is in a meeting right now and cannot be--”

“It’s about Chimera.” There was a long pause and he hoped he was making the right gamble.

“Patching you through, Captain, one moment.” There was another long pause.

“Captain.” The General said, picking up, “I assume by you using that name that you have something to say to me.”

“General…”

“They told you, didn’t they.” The General said and he looked at the sat comm in surprise, Amelia picking her head up from the report, “Now before you get indignant, Captain, know that it was on a need-to-know basis and you didn’t need to know.”

“There’s a goddamn monster out there and you didn’t think I needed to know?” He asked and the General sighed.

“Captain, I respect the hell out of you, you know that. I wanted to pull you in beforehand, give you a briefing on what you're really facing out there, but Brass shot me down. They didn’t want you jumping at shadows.” The General said and Syverson sighed, “After some worrying satellite images came back, they reached out to Chimera Industries to send out a team, take care of the problem as is their wont to do. They keep an eye out for things like this."

“What “worrying satellite images”? Is there more than one out there?” Syverson asked and there was silence.

“Three that we know about.”

“Three?” Amelia exclaimed. “We were only told about one!”

“Captain, are you not alone?” The General asked.

“Amelia Jones, Sir, of Chimera Industries. I’m leading the team that was sent out.” She said, putting down the report and walking over. “I made the decision to pull Captain Syverson in after one of my men got injured in the line.”

“What���s his status?”

“He’ll be fine, but he’s down for the count.” Syverson said, “I’m steppin’ up to fill his slot.”

“They asked you to do this?”

“I volunteered.”

“Captain, I don’t think I need to remind you that you’re on the payroll of the US Army, not Chimera Industries.” The General said.

“It would take too long to get another guy out here and get them up to speed. They gave me a crash course.” Syverson said, “I know the area and I can join my resources with theirs to track these things down and take’em out.”

“This is not a joint assignment, Captain.” The General said, “I am not giving you leave from your duties to go monster hunting with the mercs.”

“Sir, one of these things is moving closer to the base by the day, putting my men at risk.” Syverson said, “I think it would be a good idea if we cooperated with--”

“You have your job, Captain, and they have theirs.”

“General…”

“I’m giving you an order, Captain Syverson, I expect you to follow it.” There was a lengthy pause, his jaw clenching. “Captain Syverson, do you understand.”

“Yes, General, I understand.” He said, meeting Amelia’s eyes as she looked at him.

“Good. Now I hope this is the end of this discussion.”

“Yes, General.” The line went dead and he turned off the machine. They stood in silence for a long moment and she watched his shoulders tighten. “Fuck!” He yelled, making her flinch and she thought for a second he was going to take his anger out on the sat comm. He started pacing, breathing heavily, his hand running back and forth over his head.

“I’ll call HQ.” Amelia said evenly, “Get someone else out here as quickly as possible.”

“No, you’re not.” He said, still pacing.

“What?”

“No.” He repeated, “You’re not.”

“Silas?” He didn’t say anything to her, turning and leaving the office, “Silas!”

"Eddie Redmayne relished shedding nice guy persona to play a serial killer in ‘The Good Nurse’

"Eddie Redmayne has made some remarkable physical transformations to bring the stories of real-life people to the screen, from theoretical physicist Stephen Hawking to early 20th century transgender artist Lili Elbe. But in playing Charles Cullen, thought to be the most prolific serial killer in recorded history, he had to play himself.

Well, a version of himself, at least. Redmayne is widely regarded as one of the nicest stars in Hollywood, and a giving actor to his co-stars. As a nurse, Cullen often displayed a caring and charming demeanor toward his patients and co-workers.

But underneath that friendly exterior was a killer. In “The Good Nurse” — which opens in select theaters Wednesday, Oct. 19, and streams on Netflix beginning Oct. 26 — the star of the “Fantastic Beasts” franchise relished the challenge of exploring the dichotomy of a man who might have killed some 400 patients from 1988 to 2003, yet was a trusted friend to a fellow nurse, played by Jessica Chastain, who eventually helped bring him to justice.

“The thing I loved about the script was that it defied definition,” Redmayne told The Chronicle in an exclusive interview in San Francisco hours before “The Good Nurse” closed the Mill Valley Film Festival on Oct. 16. “I went into it thinking it was going to be a true-crime story, which on the one hand it is, but it focuses on the woman who was able to prevent this man from doing these things. The violence was ended through her compassion, ultimately.

“But also it felt like it was highlighting the cracks in the system. It was dumbfounding to me that this may well be the most prolific serial killer in American history and I’d never heard of him. And he had worked at nine hospitals, many of whom had a great sense of what he was doing.”

Chastain plays Amy Loughren, the real-life nurse who worked with detectives (played in the film by Nnamdi Asomugha and Noah Emmerich) to arrest him. Redmayne said he and Chastain, who are good friends, prepared for the role by spending time in nursing school, and both had conversations with Loughren.

Danish director Tobias Lindholm, known for his work with Mads Mikkelsen in “The Hunt” and “Another Round,” said the idea was not to make “The Good Nurse” a thriller but, as he put it, “a friendship story.”

“What Eddie and I were struggling with the most was to keep him friendly, never to invite us into his darkness,” said Lindholm, who accompanied Redmayne and Asomugha to Mill Valley. “I think that helped because you like him, even though you know he did it, there’s no signs of it. You are a little, ‘But he’s so nice. Could it really be him?’ I mean, he’s such a good friend to Amy.”

Redmayne said the fact that he and Chastain are friends — they met a decade ago at Giffoni, the noted children’s film festival in Italy, and have remained in touch since — created instant chemistry.

“We’d always dreamt of working together, and then this came along — it was a no-brainer,” said Redmayne, who laughed as he explained, “but my expectations were high. I’m a bit of a pessimist. I therefore think that if it’s fun to make, maybe the thing won’t be great. But Jessica is wonderfully galvanizing, so despite the subject matter, we had a really wonderful time making it.”

There was at least one day, though, that wasn’t much fun. It was during an intense interrogation scene between him, Asumogha and Emmerich when Redmayne displayed the type of transformation he achieved in his Oscar-winning performance as Hawking in “The Theory of Everything” and in his Oscar-nominated work as Elbe in “The Danish Girl.”

Lindholm said Redmayne requested that the set be chilly, so cold air was pumped in between takes. Then the director surprised his lead actor by handcuffing his wrist to the interrogation table. That was not in the script.

“We put on the handcuff, there’s this little click sound,” Lindholm recalled. “And he looks up and smiles. It’s like he found something there. I know that he’s the kind of actor who feeds from these real settings, real obstacles, and I realized ‘Oh my god’ when I saw what he’d found when we handcuffed him.”

Lindholm said the scene took 11 hours to shoot. Asomugha — known to Bay Area sports fans from his days playing football for Cal, the Oakland Raiders and the San Francisco 49ers — remembered it well.

“He’s pounding the table and he’s yelling and screaming. The camera was on him, and he did that nonstop for maybe 30 minutes,” said Asomugha of Redmayne. “Then the camera turned around and was on us. And he did the exact same thing, maybe with even more energy than he did when the camera is on him — just to aid us as actors.

“You don’t get that a lot. You hope to get that a lot from other actors, but the reality is you don’t. And for him to do that, I knew immediately, ‘Oh, this is a guy who not only cares about his work, but he cares about the people who are working opposite him.’ That’s exactly who he is as a person. He just genuinely cares about you and what you have to say and what’s going on in your life, and how your day was versus ever talking about himself, which I think is just remarkable.”

What’s going on in Redmayne’s life is that he is using his schedule promoting “The Good Nurse” and some treasured downtime with his family — he is raising two young children with wife Hannah Bagshawe, whom he first met in high school — to come down from the high of his first theater role in a decade.

He recently finished playing the Emcee opposite Jessie Buckley’s Sally Bowles in a production of “Cabaret” in London’s West End, and it was among the most rewarding professional experiences of his career. Both he and Buckley won the coveted Laurence Olivier Award for musical acting.

Redmayne said the experience took him back to his roots.

“When I was like 10 or 11, I was one of a hundred children in a production of ‘Oliver’ in the West End, at the London Palladium, a very beautiful old Victorian London theater,” Redmayne said. “I used to get to leave school, to go travel across London on the Tube to Oxford Circus, to go through the stage door of this stunning theater. I found it very seductive and and romantic. That’s where I got the bug for acting.

“I hadn’t done a musical onstage professionally since then, until ‘Cabaret.’ It was a wonderful thing. It was an immersive experience coming out of the pandemic, and there was an intimacy to it because everyone had not been to the theater for an age. It felt clandestine, and scintillating.”
