The song quote choice is a bit cheesy maybe but it's what I first thought of when I saw that scene of Valandil alone on the ship. WE know Isildur is alive, HE DOESN'T!!!! 😥😥

@honuofhawaii I think the way the line was written/directed/performed is the genuinely hurt option, though Ontamo isn't deeply wounded by any means—he's so good-natured, and clearly he's used to dealing with the nonsense Valandil and Isildur put him through. Valandil does also seem like he's playing both sides, he could very well say to Ontamo later "you know I only said that to get through to Isildur, you understand how he is, I don't actually think that."

As to the other interpretation, I don't think the show is going in an overtly queer direction at any point just because as I understand it the Tolkien estate would simply not allow that lol, even if the show runners were interested in writing overtly queer relationships. BUT I do love your interpretation here, that's definitely the vibe in some of the fanfic that exists for them haha. And I love queer readings of the show, to be clear I am extremely pro that, and there is a lot of fodder for that imo, definitely between these two!

Highlights of 2022: Ontamo and the Númebros

ontamo volunteering for the expedition because valandil volunteers first...and dying right beside him while valandil survives...

isildur promising he wouldn't leave valandil under a pile of burning rubble...only for valandil to be forced to do exactly that to isildur, who he presumes dead, just like ontamo...

i am not ok and neither is valandil!!!

hi!! always!! especially about númenor, lol.

i think i would choose some type of artist's guild, similar to eärien! i don't know that i could be an architect, but i can paint so that is probably my best best at making myself useful in númenórean society. what about you?

the númebros absolutely loved swimming and enjoying beach time together...they used to spend all their free hours outdoors, swimming, riding, running, reading each other poetry...unfortunately i am incapable of elaborating further without making everything extremely sad. valandil definitely doesn't think about how much he misses ontamo and valandil every time he catches sight of a group of young cadets laughing together as they play in the surf.

so I finally got an AO3 account, primarily so that I can leave comments and kudos with my name rather than anonymously, but AS SOON AS I finalized the setup, a fic idea popped into my brain.
