Firebird

Firebirds have a long history in imagery and popular imagination.  There’s a lot of ground to cover there.  Easily the best known is the mythical phoenix, a great bird that rises from its own ashes after death and was held to symbolize many things, including the sun, reincarnation, and various Christian concepts.  The Egyptian bennu, a possible predecessor of the phoenix, symbolized the sun, creation, and rebirth in its endless cycles and was tied to Ra and Atum at Heliopolis.  From Persia comes the ever-flying huma bird, sometimes said to never touch the ground and referred to as a bird of paradise by Ottoman poets.  In Slavic folklore, firebirds brought weal and woe to anyone who captured them.

The firebirds of the Tome of Horrors 4 aren’t themselves part of death-and-resurrection cycles like the Bestiary’s phoenix and are much smaller and less powerful than those gargantuan beings.  A firebird’s commitment to ideals of righteousness is just as strong, though, and they soar above forests, watching over the denizens and drive off those who harm the land in alliance with druids, fey, and others who protect the natural world.  The artwork in the Tome of Horrors depicts these creatures as particularly aquiline but their gleaming feathers obscure the details as they fly.  Firebirds take to the sky one night a month for a midnight flight into the heavens like a shooting star, an interesting detail that’s definitely a great hook to get a party of novice adventurers started.  Depending on a character’s relationship to nature, firebirds might be a symbol of hope, an enigmatic ally, or a judgmental, menacing presence.

Having structured their cities around open forest districts, the Ohaem peoples need little of the open fields preferred farther north. Instead, they raise crops and hunt the game in the forests, creating a different semi-urban landscape that has attracted the notice of the firebird Duzumas, even prompting the firebird to become associated with (and in the eyes of the city-state’s people, a patron of) the ruling family of Zipana.  When Duzumas dies alongside the current king in battle with several demons, a rival bloodline with ties to the couatl Zalran takes it as a sign that they must rule. For her part, Zalran has little to do with the matter and will gladly offer her advice on preventing the conflict by locating another firebird to take Duzumas’s place as the defender of his territory.

With no choice but to summon and interrogate the devil Quizoch, an adventuring party opts to conduct the dark business well out into the woods.  Unfortunately, they attract the notice of the local firebird and his forceful objections as well.  Keeping the firebird from disrupting things long enough to compel the devil to provide the information they seek will be difficult.  Keeping their reputations intact if the firebird is slain or not convinced to keep quiet will be even harder.

Greatly distrusting the fiendspawn, the firebird Numda has begun keeping an increasingly menacing watch over the tiefling enclave carved out of the Merlanod Forest.  For their part, the tieflings are peaceful, just wanting somewhere to build a life that’s a little more isolated than some ghetto in the city. Unless the firebird can be talked down, the situation seems headed for exactly the kind of tragic misunderstanding that will turn Numda’s distrust of the tieflings into a self-fulfilling prophecy. Their leader Zita is looking for someone that the firebird might listen to before that happens.
