F U T U R E P R O O F By Kevin Mora-Rosenkranz
Name of Exhibition: Futureproof 2017 (The Bragdon Brothers) Location of exhibition: StreetLevel Photoworks
1. How does the flyer/poster advertise the exhibition?
It’s not clearly advertised, they’ve just got a subtle sign in the back wall of the reception “Futureproof 2017” along with a complimentary image below it.
2. What is the suitability of the gallery space? How is the exhibition laid out?
The whole exhibition is distributed in two main rooms, with approximately 6 different projects. It doesn’t seem to have any particular order, it looked that it’s been arranged with style similarities so that each project compliment one another. It’s laid out in a very interactive way, so there’s a more dynamic approach between the viewer and the photographs. They also had small leaflets arranged next to the window, I feel they should advertise it in a better way, not many people would know that those leaflets are linked to the exhibition. They also offer, next to the leaflets, a sheet of paper where you can leave feedback about the exhibition.
3. How has the work been mounted? Is this appropriate for the work?
Each project has been mounted differently, some of them with classic frames, but others with a more unusual approach complementing the idea behind the project. My favourite piece of work was “The Bragdon Brothers”, mounted with long strips of photographic sheets, attached with needles from the top and hanging in the bottom of the floor. This works great because it adds a more organic/raw feeling to it, offering a more interactive motion with the gallery space.
4. Who made the work?
Gareth Bragdon and Gavin Bragdon, also know as The Bragdon Brothers.
5. Who did they make it for, who is the audience?
It will attract a more alternative audience, the concept of this work is very unique and has a very unusual approach, it doesn’t have the typical aesthetic portrait feeling to it, so I can’t imagine that the general public would appreciate this type of work.
6. How does it make you feel?
It really caught my attention because of the raw look on them, it feels like a very honest approach of street style photography. Definitely has a Martin Parr’s influence, due to the use of flash and strong saturated colours, reinforces the idea of a documentary lifestyle shots. I really enjoy the dark feeling to it, it adds a mysterious concept, a very alternative approach to the general street photography.
7. If the work has a title, does it make you thin about the images differently?
The title for this project is “The Bragdon Brothers”, I feel it doesn’t complement directly to the images, but more to the concept behind it. Judging it by the title, it seems to have an idea of how this brothers see the world, in a very similar way, to the point that they can combine their images and transform it into one set of images, it reinforces the concept of brotherhood and the power of unity.
8. How would I describe it to someone later?
It’s a very interesting project that offers an unusual approach to street photography, delivering a raw set of images that will make you wonder and reconsider the idea of society.
9. Does the photograph make you want to ask questions, what are these questions?
Definitely, I’d like to know what’s their approach when photographing people, do they ask permission first? Is it spontaneous? Were the people in the images hired for the project? Is there any agreement for the use of the images? Contracts signed?.
10. Is the photograph valuable? How do you know?
It is definitely valuable, because like all street photography, it records a significant moment in time. In the future, this set of images will be historical, showcasing the culture of the time, by exposing the fashion, mood, people and moments of that time.
11. Is the work for sale and who might buy it?
It is not for sale in the gallery space, but you can access their website “www.bragdonbrothers.com” and buy prints. They sell some of their images for £50 for an A4 giclee fine art print, signed and numbered, including the shipping and they offer worldwide delivery.
12. What information is available about the artists?
There’s really no information available in the gallery, the only thing advertised is their name, besides from that is just a matter on doing a quick search online. The Bragdon Brothers (Gareth and Gavin), based in Edinburgh they’ve been doing street photography since 2012, graduated from Edinburg College with a BA in photography. Members of Grey Skies and Full Frontal Flash, their work has been exhibited in different places, such as: Out of The Blue Drill Hall, Edinburgh. 2015, “Emerging Talent” Retina Photography Festival, Edinburgh. 2016, London Street Photography Symposium (talk with Full Frontal Flash), London. 2016 and Street Sans Frontières, Paris. 2017.
13. Who organised the exhibition and who selected the work?
The exhibition was organised by StreetLevel Photoworks, there’s no information available about who selected the work. Futureproof is a yearly exhibition, with the purpose of showcasing new work by recent graduated, this year they focused on exploring materials related to photography, you can definitely appreciate this by seeing the presentation of each project, using different techniques to showcase their work.

120mm Buisness Shoots Summary
For each of my buisness photoshoots I brought along a medium format camera as well as a full frame digital camera. I did this to change up my approach to creating images, forcing myself to slow down and consider each shot more thoroughly. I achieved this to varying degrees of success, film cameras obviously only have one ASA sensitivity per roll which limits their use in environments with varying light levels. To try eleviate this problem as much as possible I used a versatile film stock Porta 400, which is more sensitive to light than the Porta 160 that I intend to use for my studio shoots where I have unlimited light. Porta 400 still has relatively fine grain so I was not too concerned about the quality of the images, this coupled with a constant LED light panel helped to capture frames in different situations of light.
Southville Deli
Southville Deli had a vast variance in the amount of light available, at the front of the shop there was the most light due to the glass windows so this is where I mainly used the Mamiya 7 ii, a range finder. This is where I captured the portrait of the shop owner Paul Wick. I am pleased with the image despite it coming out slightly underexposed, I also feel as though I may have not developed it perfectly as the frame came out slightly odd. Due to the poor light levels I also took 4 frames outside where I had enough light to use comfortable settings such as F7.1 and 100th of a second. These settings allowed me to be more spontaneous with my shooting which meant that I could more easily photograph people, which in my opinion have resulted in my best images from this shoot. The series of three images depicting a man sitting outside and being served a freshly ground coffee by one of the employees are the most successful. I think this because the frame captures a sense of palce, giving the viewer an insight in to the setting of the deli and showcases what happens here as well as the kind of customers and services they offer. I am glad I shot on colour film as the orange seating makes for a very eye catching image, and the fact that the main is the only person in frame makes him clearly the the focus of the photographs.
Burger Joint
The time I arranged to photograph the Burger Joint on North St happened to be on an uncharacteristically quiet lunch shift which meant that I did not manage to photograph many people in the establishment. Due to this I decided to take this as a chance to shift my focus and look at the food that they served, the owner very kindly cooked up two burgers and a side portion of ships specially for me to photograph. This gave me the opportunity to properly compose and construct my images which leant itself well to using the Mamiya 7 ii on a tripod. Burger Joint unique selling point is that the customers fill out a card for their order, ticking boxes to customise everything from the bun to the burger itself. I therefore decided to focuss on this becuase it is a unique aspect of a restaurant and allowed me to create a narrative through the lens which is easily communicated to the audience. I am happy with the outcome of this photoshoot considering the lack of people I had to photograph. I took inspiration from Martin Parr’s book ‘Real Food’ where he gets up close and personal with his food photography, usually filling the frame and making the food the clear focus of the image. I used an LED panel to create more interesting lighting and shadows on the burgers, adding depth and emphasising the different elements of the food.
Tin Can Coffee Co
Tin Can Coffee Co was one of my least successful shoots on medium format, for this shoot I used the SLR Mamiya RZ67. This is a much larger camera which required me to use a tripod for all of my shots, also because of the fact that the lighting was not ideal through the steamy windows which resulted in diffuse lighting. Despite this I manage to capture a successful still life of the esqusite coffee art that they serve at this independent coffee shop. I attempted to take a portrait of a customer who I got talking to, but my shutter speed was too slow and my F number too small - resulting in a blurry narrowly focused image. This portrait also did not convey much, if any, information about the coffee shop so I would not consider it a successful image. My digital images from this shoot were much more successful due to the variable ISO settings that digital cameras have and the full frame sensor. I had to use a tiny aperture for most of my inside frames which meant that hardly any of the image was sharp because I was shooting at such close range, even with the added light from the LED panel. I should have used a more sensitive film stock such as Porta 800, I would have known to do this if I had taken light metre readings prior to the photoshoot.
Kask
Kask also presented problems when shooting on the Mamiya 7ii because the atmosphere in the bar was low warm lighting which did not allow for much light or many defining shadows. This became apparent when I developed my film and saw that my portrait of the buisness owner, Natalie, was out of focus due to her trying to keep her dog Indie still for the photograph. I thought that this was the case at the time so I took two frames, however the best of the two did not come out well in processing which is a shame - I did my best in photoshop to recover it but the colours are completley off and it has lost its depth. The other interior photos I captured at Kask are also not sharply focused due to the limititing camera settings that I could use. The most successful images from this medium format shoot were the ones I took outside when I put the shutter on a timer and kept it open from 1 - 2 seconds. This shoot was late at night so the only light sources were the street lamps, the Kask sign and the light escaping through the windows. I think these are successful because they are quite atmospheric and enticing... depicting a damp cold night, cut through by the warmth, light and activity of the Kask bar.

RALPH GIBSON (b.1939-, America) Days at Sea
Tumblr media

Martin Parr GB. England. ‘I don’t think it’s anything particularly forced on Deborah. We’ve just always enjoyed the same sort of things.’ From ‘Signs of the Times’. 1991. © Martin Parr | Magnum Photos
Martin Parr GB. England. Weymouth. From ‘Common Sense’. 1998. © Martin Parr | Magnum Photos

Jonas Bendiksen GB. Runnymede. 2015. Dolores (David Shaylers transvestite femme persona) speaking to the flock. Paul the apostle writes “nor is there male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus”. Today’s Messiah has an alter ego named Dolores Kane, who embodies the feminine aspects of divinity. Like Jesus of Nazareth, David and Dolores move in circles far outside of society’s establishment. David Shayler the Christ was born December 24th, 1965 in Middlesbrough, an industrial town in North East England. A former MI5 agent, he blew the whistle on the secret services in 1996 to uncover corruption and incompetence. He has been fighting the Goliaths of the Earthly Judiciary and Establishment ever since. His revelation that he was Jesus Christ came in 2007. Since then he has been on a mission to teach humanity Christ consciousness, unconditional love and the supremacy of God’s law over Man’s legislation. © Jonas Bendiksen | Magnum Photos
Jonas Bendiksen RUSSIA. Krasnoyarsk Territory. 2015. Disciples of Vissarion at a communal lunch during a Christmas pilgrimage. Christmas for them is January 14th, Vissarion’s birthday. In 1988 the man born as Sergei Torop lost his job as a traffic policeman in the Siberian town of Minusinsk. Shortly afterwards, just as the Soviet Union unraveled around him, he had his first revelations that he was Jesus Christ. He founded the Church of the Last Testament in the early 1990s. People flocked to him from all corners of the Russian empire and founded an off-the-grid utopian eco-village in the Siberian wilderness, the Abode of Dawn. The community now numbers around five thousand dedicated followers. They have built their own schools, churches, formed a priesthood and their own social structure. Vissarion’s right-hand disciple, Vadim, is always close by and records all Vissarion’s deeds and proclamations. The resulting chronicles are continuously published in thick Russian-language tomes titled Pozledniy Zavet, or The Last Testament. They are currently on volume sixteen. © Jonas Bendiksen | Magnum Photos
Jonas Bendiksen INRI Cristo’s disciples rolling him around on the compound grounds on his rolling pedestal. INRI (born Alvaro Theiss) takes his first name from the initials of the inscription the Romans placed on the cross to spite him 2,000 years ago: Iesus Nazarenus Rex Iudaeorum, or Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews. The first awakening as the Christ came already in 1979 during a fast in Santiago of Chile, and INRI subsequently spent many years as a wandering preacher before settling in New Jerusalem, which is located outside of Brasilia. Most of the dozen or so disciples who live inside INRI’s compound are women. While the 69-year old Saviour and his followers live a private and secluded life, they are also busy disseminating his teachings to the world via the Internet, using YouTube, music videos and live broadcasts of sermons.
