TTOI History Nuggets
1.2 - Karlsefni Lineage
Tumblr media
{Image pulled off the Thorfinn Karlsefni Wikipedia page}
To say this family was loaded, is an understatement. As you can see, Thorfinn's father was a descendant of an Irish king, and Ragnar Loðbrók himself
which I take with a grain of salt bc you'd be surprised how many ppl claimed that XD
And his Grandfather, Snorri was not only a Goði {a religious leader in pre 11th century contexts only}, but a massive land owner, we're talking {likely, I could be wrong abt that interpritation} the entirity Skagafjörður {that snippet is here, in chapter 64}. And possible foster father of Óláf the Peacock {evidence for this in chapters 16 and 31}, another super rich guy and better known as inspiration for the character Askeladd from Vinland Saga.
Thórd
Other than the fact that this man was rich, we don't know much about him. So here's where I take some control, aka make shit up: his byname 'Horsehead' indicates that he could have had the might of a horse, which could have been earned on the battlefield. With that, I decided to make him one of the great Jómsvíkings!
Thórrun
As for her. . . we have nothing. Just her name. No saga or text has anything beyond that. So I decided to make her also from money as the daughter of a powerful Jómsvíking.

cbs ghosts theory time!!
so. in this lil snippet we’re introduced to the fact that young children can see ghosts. now i’ve been following this show and even if it is a bit more exposition-heavy than its bbc counterpart, i don’t think it’d just throw something like this in for no reason.
now on to the promo on ghostscbs instagram with hetty and thorfinn. in this hetty explains that she and thorfinn are not ‘hang out alone together outside the group’ friends. to which thorfinn, almost wistfully replies ‘we used to be closer.’ and hetty claims to not know what he’s talking about.
now we know that thorfinn is obviously a lot older than her ghost-wise. and given the nugget we have about kids seeing ghosts, i raise you this theory:
thorfinn and hetty were friends when hetty was little. an imaginary friend of sorts, because he faded away as hetty grew up. she forgot him. but he never forgot her.

TTOI History Nuggets
1.1 - Reynistaðarkirkja & The Settlement Reynis
Welcome to The Taste Of Iron {TTOI} History Nuggets! A series of posts I decided to make to educate others and give context to the shenanigans occurring in my book on my alt. ao3 account. This includes characters, places, events, or whatever historical thing featured in the work that tickles my nerd brain. I will record where I take blatant creative liberties**; and keep in mind, I'm not a professional and all this information comes from my own research and most, if not all sources will be linked in these posts!
Reynistaðarkirkja
This is a location that still stands today, the actual home of Thorfinn Karlsefni. Though it was converted to a church in the 13th century and has been through its fair share of rough ups, the original foundations still exist. {source, translated}
{A reconstruction of the settlement based the content in the paper: pgs. 44-52, 56-75}
Tumblr media
This map took me so long to make for no reason?? But I'm glad I did. I find it interesting that the original Viking settlement was mostly built around the river {called Reynistaðará} and that the fort is on the opposite side, away from the residential/agricultural buildings, which just makes sense.
"Tunnel{?}"
My creative interpretation of this is that Thórd made this tunnel after he deserted for his family and the venerable people of the settlement in case the Jómsvíkings came looking.
Soil
There is even evidence of Birch and Pine trees in the soil and area but I don't know how to fit it in yet ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
{Soil profile below, if you're interested XD}
as well as traces of Sedge, Mare's-tail, Buttercup, Sorrel, Cranberries, Bilberries, Violets, two unknown types of grass seeds, and large amounts of Barley. {pg. 18, 54-56}
And in the tephra {the term for rock ejected from erupting volcanos} layers underground, there was stuff dating to the year 1000 C.E which totally won't become a plot device from the Hrútafjordur area. {pg. 20}
Note, the results from this article is actually a follow up from the other one above vv
Tumblr media
Soil profile✨ ^^
Soil PT. 2
Upon reanylization years later the team found additional traces of a kind of Willow and Rowan trees, chick weed, and. . . dung. {pgs. 4-5}
{I suppose I've reached peak nerd when I read this next section and found it interesting.}
Dung
The dung did not only belonged to livestock, but humans as well. Where this piques my interest, is that both types where sometimes found charred or partially charred. This indicates that the people Reynis used the dung, or its smoke, to preserve food in order to conserve wood fuel! {pg. 5}
I didn't know that was even a viable option?? It's genius??? And it's a method that's still in use in cultures today! {source/further reading}
Agriculture
The results from the soil points to fact that Reynis was partially a wetland, which makes sense bc it was right on water, and it shows as well their approach to agriculture: {pgs. 6-7}
Tumblr media
The arrows look goofy but whatever XD
**To point out {maybe} the obvious, the existence of Thóra and everything that happens up until the voyage to North America is made up or based off real events.
