Penn Central was a year old in June 1969 but this scene at Poughkeepsie carried on the New York Central heritage. E8s 4066-4093 have arrived from Croton-Harmon on a commuter train out of Grand Central, while the Alco S-3 9378 assigned to local switching has tied up for the weekend.

King George VI & Queen Elizabeth traveling in NJ and NY, 1939
Queen Elizabeth and King George VI wave from the Canadian Pavilion at the New York World's Fair in 1939. Here's a little about their journey on that jam-packed day:
On June 10, 1939, the King & Queen arrived in Red Bank, NJ via special train. From there they traveled a few miles by open car to Fort Hancock at Sandy Hook, where they boarded the US destroyer Warrington for the trip across the harbor to Battery Park in lower Manhattan. (This is video of Warrington crossing the harbor. You can see how hazy it was that day.)
Bertie & Elizabeth were excited to see the New York skyline come into view, and when the ship passed the Statue of Liberty, they stood up from their deck chairs to get a better look.
These places are well known to me, and I always get a little bit of a fangirl thrill knowing I could be walking in Bertie's footsteps. 😊
The Sandy Hook ferry terminal today - most likely this was area where Warrington embarked from back in the day.
Fort Hancock is defunct now, but much of the old buildings and fortifications remain through preservation efforts, like these Officers' Quarters, which always make interesting pictures.
At the start of this very long day, the King & Queen first arrived at the train station in Red Bank, NJ, traveling from Washington DC. Here, they are disembarking the Royal Train and meeting with dignitaries. (photos from NPS and some fun first-hand recollections.)
The Red Bank train station today.
USS Warrington arriving at its ultimate destination - Battery Park in NYC. An enormous crowd awaited the royal couple, greeting them with thunderous cheers. Then they were whisked away again in cars for a high speed journey up the West Side Highway to visit the World's Fair in Queens.
Battery Park isn't the easiest spot to photograph right now because there is a lot of construction in the area. But this is opposite side view of the Pier One building where they would have docked. (you can see just the edge of it all the way on the right in the gif above of the ship arriving.) I'm standing at about the point where they would have gotten onto the West Side Highway.
Adding this last bit for fun, though I've shared it before. This is the breathless commentary of reporters and police dispatchers leading the royal entourage as they progressed from the USS Warrington to Pier One at the Battery, onto the West Side Highway and Grand Central Parkway, all the way to the 1939 World's Fair.
It was very unique reportage because this was the first time something like this was attempted on scene; going live to different reporters dispersed throughout the route, in cooperation with the NYPD and using their radios. It was considered a very challenging undertaking and cutting edge for it's day.
The recording is rather long (dispersed with regal marches when they had nothing to talk about!) but it is a very fun listen if you are interested in this sort of historical thing; especially when the crusty New-York-accented reporters get swept away with Royal Fever - "oh he's handsome!" and "oh she's lovely!" 😂

Best National Park Service Site To Vist- MSN
Best National Park in the US? It's not Yellowstone, Yosemite or the Great Smokies, according to new list (msn.com)
I have not had the chance to visit Isle Royale National Park but I have wanted to visit for many many many years. I lied, i did have the opportunity and as i readied to go i broke a toe.... and that kinda screwed me from going since the only way of getting around on the islands is walking and boating.
But I have heard nothing but good things from folks who have visited. And Lake Superior is one of my favorite bodies of water. And would go back to the Upper Peninsula of Michigan in a heart beat if the opportunity showed itself. So go visit if you get the chance. And brush up on your rock knowledge before you go. There are some beautiful rocks on those shores including Lake Superior Agates (am the proud owner of a few), native copper and datolite.
Also if you go, make sure you also visit Keweenaw National Historic Park just a few miles up from the boat dock. It is a fantastic, little known, historic site in the NPS that talks about the copper industry in the US and the people it drew to the country from ALLLL over the world. At one point in the 19th century and early 20th century Calumet, MI was just as ethically diverse as NYC at the time.
Click on the above Identification Badge to be taken to Keweenaw's website of a few of the artifacts they have.

Share your martini recipe please love 🍸
Apollo 11 asks, martini asks, and That Man looking like a goddamned snack? This evening is coming up Rose, it seems...
Okay. At the risk of being a bit too into this: I love martinis. Love them. I generally like a dirty martini, either vodka or gin, with a 4:1 proportion of base spirit to vermouth, with about a tablespoon of brine and three olives (so you get a little snack with your drink).
I generally pop a few cubes of ice in the glass (I use an old-school small martini glass) while I mix, and use a little jug for the actual mixing. A few cubes of ice there, add the liquor and brine, and stir for about 45 seconds or so. James Bond is a wuss; a shaken martini is watered down - stirred is preferable but you do need a bit of the ice to break down and dilute the spirits.
Then I strain into the chilled glass, pop in the olives, and there we go.
For vodka, I prefer Stolichnaya; for gin, Bombay Sapphire; and for vermouth, the one and only for me is Noilly-Prat. I like Dolin, too, but NP is the business.
Sometimes I do a 'perfect' martini, a 1:1 ratio of spirit and vermouth. But I prefer them dry, in general - but not bone dry. Some people go 15:1 which is insanity to me 😁
Finally, because I'm thinking about them now, some of the best martinis I've ever had:
Harry's New York Bar, Paris. Icy cold, crisp AF, served by delightful bartenders in white jackets in a tiny bar once frequented by Hemingway, Gershwin and basically every American expat ever. My favourite bar in Paris.
Bemelman's Bar, The Carlyle, NYC. This was one of my must-do things in NYC and it didn't disappoint. Yes, it's expensive but you basically get two martinis for the price (they serve one in the glass and give you a little iced jug with another) and the atmosphere is gorgeous. Plus: the snacks are amazing.
Ognisko/The Polish Club, London. The martinis are amazing value for London and they have a menu, so you can build yours based on your preference of spirit. Being a Polish club they have a focus on vodka but you can try out different styles (the potato one I had last time was really interesting!). And the staff are lovely, too. If you really want to knock your socks off the Polish Martini they serve packs a heck of a punch.
Thank you lovely! And cheers!!
#asked and answered#not sure if you've noticed but i frickin love martinis and their many variations#i have also noticed That Man drinking them so i would like to ask his preferred style too#rambling rose

just curious about your thoughts because on this blog we went from them being a couple after their NYC selfie to them being open to now former situationship ...
Looking back what do you think about it all ?
I still have the feeling that Paul might be struggling in some kind ....
I think the timeline is so weird as the gucci show was not that long ago and the np screening was just recently... what happend at Glastonbury?
I still think that if they were ever more than platonic, they would be in an open/ less rigid relationship, which tends to have ups and downs, like all relationships. Andrew seems to have no interest in monogamy.
I do think it's likely Paul is down harder than Andrew is or maybe Andrew hides it better. I have never thought it was a traditional, monogamous relationship. I am not sure where they are now but that panel looked the same as always to me.
I personally don't think anything happened at Glastonbury that was that bad. Paul spent the Saturday and Sunday with his family and friends. Andrew is probably a little more low-key, didn't want to hang out with a big group of people in their 20s and their key usage, and likely has different music tastes. It looks like he left early anyway, he's a busy man. Glasto is so big, it's not unusual for friends to split up, I have been and not seen people for days on end.
Seeing him cropped out Nell's photo and the fact he was doing lifties to her friends is super cute. Also Paul exited Vanya really quickly when he was spotted.
I think they spent more time together than we know, which to me is such a big hint they are more than friends. Imagine being really into someone and not being allowed to be intimate with them, I'd also decide to stay away. Maybe this is just delusional. That selfie said all I need to know.
I always worry about Paul's mental health, some of the things he has said over the years makes me really sad. That is also nothing to do with that video. But let's not get into that on main, I know too much about some of this stuff.
I'll be honest, I have turned my asks off a few times this week because it can be overwhelming to open up the app and see 30+ messages that are super negative. It's not because of Gracie or Andrew not being with them at Glastonbury. My IRL is chaotic and anxiety-inducing at the moment; I mentally can't cope with it when hates comes in 10s and 20s.
#asks#mescott#i guess i needed to get some stuff out#anyone else? to me the vibes have changed lately

Wednesday, September 6 - New York City
We never saw The Statue of Liberty on our way in this morning, as at the expected time of 4:30 AM we were well on our way up the Hudson River. We were off the ship by 8:30 (at a pier a bit further south than expected, which was actually closer to our hotel), and headed east towards our lodging. Even at this hour, it was fairly quiet on the streets until we got closer to 8th Avenue, and by the time we reached our destination near 7th Ave and 49th Street, the sidewalks were crowded, mostly with tourists. We repackaged our small daypacks, dropped off our luggage, and headed out.
First up was heading downtown via subway, to take the Staten Island ferry, allowing us to see lady Liberty from a distance. It was already quite hot (heat advisory), but the breeze out on the water made it bearable, and the waiting areas at the ferry terminals were air conditioned. Our survival strategy for the day was to alternate exploration with air conditioned spaces, since the temperature got up to 95 ("feels like 99"). We explored the financial district a bit, having lunch in a shady park and looking at the facade of the Old Customs Building (5th photo), now partially a Museum of the American Indian. Somewhat ironically, there are four large statues out front, representing the four continents (only Asia, Europe, America and Africa seemed to make the cut). The one representing America has an Indian sneaking up on a woman, or at least that's what it looked like. Not terribly PC, but better than the smaller statues representing the "eight races".
The Wall Street bull (actually not near Wall Street) has become a tourist attraction, and there was a long queue of folks waiting to have their picture taken with it. We cooled off a bit in the old Federal Hall (NPS site, so there were bathrooms, too), and then headed to the 9/11 memorial. It wasn't yet designed or built the last time I was in NYC, and it's actually quite affecting. There are two large voids where the towers stood, and water pours down the sides, and eventually into another smaller void in the middle. The names of those lost are engraved in a railing around the outside of both voids. The new tower at One World Trade Center is rather unfortunate, and somewhat distracts from the simplicity of the memorial. There is also a museum (we didn't go in) and across the street, a subterranean shopping mall and subway entrance, covered at street level by this white wing-like structure. We opted instead to walk west to the Hudson and north through a few parks, before finding another subway stop.
This time our subway car was actually air conditioned, and we got off before Times Square, and headed east to Bryant Park and the NY Library (air conditioning and bathrooms - we were staying hydrated). We finished off our adventure by stopping in Whole Foods to pick up some breakfast foods, and a couple of quick dinners, since our lodging has a small kitchen. By the time we walked back to our room and checked in, we were more than ready for a shower!
We had bought tickets for "Some Like it Hot" before we left, but it was an 8 PM curtain, so we spent a little time wandering around Times Square ahead of the show. There are so many more electronic billboards than the last time I was here, but the same crowds, both before and after the show. "Some Like it Hot" got several Tonys, including best choreography, which was well earned. The story has been adapted to resonate better with current sensibilities, but was still the same basic premise as the movie, and the result was a fun, somewhat overcaffeinated production. Lots of great performances, too.
Tomorrow we will probably head north to Central Park and maybe check out 5th Avenue. It's supposed to be even hotter tomorrow, so our strategy will be the same. We are hoping to pick up some tickets for another show at the TKTS booth, as it's a fun way to top off the day (and about the only time when it is actually comfortable to wander around outside).

Woke Up This Morning!
On the way into NYC, Tony & Carmella talk about AJ, and how much better he’s doing after the suicide attempt. As they drive, we see in the background the exact opposite order of scenery as originally shown in the show’s intro. Instead of watching Tony drive home from NYC to NJ, we now see all those familiar places along the way, but in reverse. While they get closer to NYC and the tunnel, familiar music is playing on the radio. The songs are no coincidence though, as they have been played on the show before and foreshadow what’s coming.
