do share your thoughts on the SnK final chapter and ending if you read it! <3
OKAY!! Here are just some of my thoughts, none of which are uniform lmaooo and are subject to change if I think about it long enough <22 lots of stuff I haven’t completely figured out or reconciled with yet, but here we go
Eren’s death
I wanted him to die, and one way or another, he was destined to die; so this is kind of the ending I asked for.
I wanted him to die for a few reasons, most of which revolve around my desire for him to finally rest and not have to shoulder all the burdens that have been put on him for any longer. So, his death definitely did that for me, and I wouldn’t change it.
BUT it was heartbreaking to see that, for once, he genuinely did not want to die, and wanted to have time to spend with Mikasa after everything. Eren has asked to die multiple times in the past, and his death was inevitable at some point in time; so to see that in his final moments, he finally said/realized he didn’t want to go made it so bittersweet.
The thing I’m happiest about the most is that he achieved his original goal: to kill all the titans. As a titan himself, he was always a part of that plan, so, again I’m okay with his death. But it’s a twisted, beautiful sort of tragedy that in wanting to kill himself to achieve his dream, he found a sense of personhood that made him think life was worth living [even if his goal wasn’t achieved].
Another important reason I believed he needed to/should have died is because I didn’t want him to have to suffer at the hands of any other government or empire again. Even if none of the shit with Marley or the other nations happened, and he found away to “free” everyone without murder, the government of Paradis wouldn’t have trusted him. They never really did.
Eren has been locked up and/or under constant supervision since he was 15. And when he wasn’t, it’s because he was kidnapped and somebody else was preying on his death. Even when he desperately pleaded to help and showed that he wanted to use his titan to help, he was treated like a criminal, and less than human.
You can’t... you can’t treat a kid like that and expect him to turn out normal 😭😭 or to not want to go to extremes, or to become a pacifist, or to spinelessly hand over his own life and ambitions. (Honestly... think he should have started with murking a few people in Wall Sina, but whatever 🙄)
This is all to say, that if he continued to live, free of the 13 year curse, he wouldn’t have been free in any nation. He probably would have been executed, or at the very least, locked up until he died. So, I’m happy that he was able to die at his own hand (and Mikasa’s, too).
Eren’s character
I obviously still love his character, and I don’t think his actions in the final season ruined him for way. There’s a lot to come to terms with, but I like that about him. I’ll work through all the details one day, and I’m okay with that. In fact, I don’t think Eren even ever got the chance to figure himself out independent of his titan.
His secret keeping was questionable, but not out of character. He’s always ruminated until he figures something out, or gets stuck and needs help—he’s always had the whole thing about doing everything on his own.
Until that one conversation with him, Mikasa, and Armin after the fight with Jean in s3. I’d always read that as him beginning to understand that he didn’t have to everything on his own, and that he was going to be relying on his friends from thereon out. But, sometimes, I feel like that realization got erased...? I don’t know, maybe the more I think about it, the more it’ll make sense, but that’s one part I’m still working through.
The only other thing I didn’t understand is how he got so smart LMAOOO. His plan and actions required quite a bit of thought, foresight, and sacrifice that he’s never really shown before; at least not to this degree. Like I said though, if you factor in how his was treated, and how his life always had an expiration date, it begins to make sense why he was so quick and insistent to act, so it’s not completely out of left field for me—and I could even make the argument that he wasn’t really that smart and was just as impulsive (ish) and hot-headed as he’s always been; but like I said, I’m still figuring it out. Not sure what it was that awakened his braincells but I’ll get there LMAOOO
Eren + Mikasa
Fuck y’all I like Eremika goodnight. I can’t help it, I’m a simple bitch: I see childhood friends to lovers, and I fold. You should too smh.
I... don’t think the little cottagecore timeline from 138 was out of character for either of them. I see the arguments that it was, and that’s cool, but I see it as something very real and plausible.
Eren showed that he did all of this to ensure that even if he couldn’t bring peace to the whole world, at the very least, he could do his best to make sure his friends live long, happy lives. An alternate way for that would have been to give Mikasa the opportunity to spend his remaining years with him.
Eren has always done his best Mikasa and Armin, even if his methods seemed harsh or apathetic. The way I see it, running away with Mikasa in his final year is not only becoming and telling of the kind of friend/person his is, but it would have been his way to atone for being an idiot and not acting upon his feelings [in a more traditional sense] earlier.
He knew either way it was too late, but he also knew that he owed her—and himself—even a piece of peace before it all ended, whichever way it was going to end. And I think that’s a part of Eren’s character that’s often overlooked.
Mikasa’s ending
I think that Eren ultimately killed himself, but it’s undeniable that Mikasa helped, and I’m glad she did. If Eren was going to die by anybody’s hands, I wanted it to be Mikasa’s or Levi’s.
I think Levi would have been symbolic, given his speech in the courtroom in s1, about how killing Eren is the best he could do, and that there was no in-between. But I’m happy with Mikasa doing it too, because, in a way, I think she ended up being able to do the one thing Levi didn’t have the physical strength left to do. I also like it as far as Mikasa’s relationship with Levi goes; she kind of becomes him in this complicated way, and it shows how far they’ve come in terms of trust. They’re a pretty good team.
I don’t see why anyone would give her shit for sitting at Eren’s gravestone. It had been only three years since he died, and regardless of the amount of time that had passed, if it was the anniversary of his death, that’s a perfectly normal thing to do...? So many people hate her for being in love Eren and I don’t get it. She’s just mourning, and she’s well within her rights to do so.
Actually, I think that Mikasa being shown to have loved and mourned for Eren so outwardly were the most profound displays of bravery in this whole series.
It takes so much courage to love, especially in her world, but Mikasa has never shied away from it. I would even go so far as to argue that she is the character with the strongest sense of self and self-worth. I don’t think people realize how much it takes to know anything about yourself that assuredly—so many characters are left with unanswered questions about their world, themselves, and their place in it—but Mikasa has always known that she loves Eren.
That’s an insanely hard thing to know and to do. And she wasn’t blind about it either, nor did she believe her love was unconditional (and if she gets shit for having hope for Eren, then so should Armin, but we know why he doesn’t get the same heat for it). She heard out the concerns of her friends, she let go of the scarf, and she killed him in the end.
I would have liked to see her talk to Kiyoomi again, and perhaps see her being associated with that nation/country/whatever it was. But she’s still thee baddest bitch and the best girl.
Levi
WE IN THIS BITCH!! WE ABSOLUTELY IN THIS BITCH!!
ROUND OF APPLAUSE LADIES AND GAYS AND THEYS FOR THE MAN, THE MYTH, THE LEGEND HIMSELF!!
If he died, I would have rioted. On god.
This is the EXACT ending I wanted for him. I’m so happy that he gets time to rest knowing that none of his decision were in vain; and that he shouldn’t regret anything he did.
l know the wheelchair was literal in the sense that he was injured, but I also think it’s metaphorical in that he no longer has to standing on his own two feet, and carry everyone on his back. For once, for fucking once, he can literally sit back and read a fucking book in peace.
Also Gabi and Falco taking care of him is so fucking cute, I loved that so, so, so much.
Others
I don’t think Hange needed to die, goodbye. I get why they did, and I’m glad they went out in a way they wanted do, but that doesn’t mean I’m happy about it BYE.
Pieck is far too sexy for her titan to have been that ghastly. Porco, too. Speaking of Porcupine, I fucking love him. I didn’t think I would like him this much, but I do, and now I miss him.
When did Connie get so s*xy
I stand by the belief that this wouldn’t have happened with Erwin around—and for the worse. Yes, I think Hange waited longer than they should have to act; but I understand they were overwhelmed, and had a lot of responsibility, and regret, clouding over them.
That being said, I think Erwin would have been 10x worse LMFAO with all his secret keeping and mystery. With all the shit going on, all the information being revealed to Paradis, and with Eren’s own secret keeping, I don’t think Erwin’s character and way of planning would have been conducive the new environment. RIP tho Erwin, you a legend for the shit you did, big ups on that my guy.
I... guys, I like Reiner. Like, a lot. What goes on.
I still hate H*storia and I think she caused a lot of problems that could have been resolved relatively quickly if she left 😐😐 yeah, yeah, girl power or whatever, but I don’t like it. I don’t like her. Bye.
I have more thoughts on Marley and the other nations, but that’s a whole separate rant that I will spare you from for now

[ muse #1 ] ●● is that cillian murphy? no, that’s just dante armstrong, the 45 year old cismale who is a 𝐅𝐁𝐈 𝐀𝐆𝐄𝐍𝐓. some say they’re self-destructive & unpredictable, but their family and friends will swear they’re efficient & candid. when i think of them, i think of at least sleepless nights, bullet proof vests, movie nights with the family, confidential case files, last minute therapy sessions, hidden gun holsters, sunday night roasts, clean shaves. i wonder if his family knows that 𝐇𝐄 𝐒𝐔𝐅𝐅𝐄𝐑𝐒 𝐅𝐑𝐎𝐌 𝐀 𝐁𝐑𝐀𝐈𝐍 𝐃𝐈𝐒𝐎𝐑𝐃𝐄𝐑. ●●
yeah, i did another thing and this one is gonna stick bc well... if you look under the cut i have given you all of dante and myself so i apologise for the length but it just flew out of me. i haven’t even put any wanted connections bc that would make it 10x longer. just love me and i will love you all the same.
trigger warnings: medical terminology, chronic illness, hospitals, vomiting mention.
i’m proud to present dante sean armstrong, eldest son of eris dorothy (nee may) and basil wayne armstrong. his sister was born two years later and then came his younger brother another three years after.
his childhood wasn’t exactly rainbows and glorious days of splendor, but it wasn’t horrendous either. their family lived on a property in the countryside and owned some animals. farm work and chores were to be done every day as well as keeping up with their school work.
both of his parents were strict and enforced a lot of rules and there were to be no questions asked. they hounded into the three of them the importance of working hard and providing for the family and that’s stuck with dante. he wasn’t allowed to get away with the things some of the kids these days do ( eyes at all you rebel lil shits ) and dare he disrespect his parents, he’d be punished for it.
UPDATED NOV 24: with that being said, his parents didn’t show their love physically but they showed it in a lot of other ways. long holidays to the beach, constantly spending time together on the lake, picnics, going to sporting events when they could, traveling sometimes, card game nights. spending quality time together was their way of showing love. to this day, that is still how they show their children their love.
dante is incredibly intelligent ( unlike myself so i’m sorry pls bare with me ) and that could be seen from day dot. he was hitting milestones before the average child was and his parents saw potential in him. they pushed him harder than his siblings, with school work and work on the property. basil originally wanted dante to take over the property but once he hit high school, he knew there was no way he was going to be able to keep this boy there.
he graduated high school top of his class with a full scholarship to boston uni for law, so he packed his bags and he was off. he only saw his family at major holidays whilst he was at college as he put his head down, bum up and studied hard with a job on the side.
with that being said he played as hard as he worked and knows how to have fun, so he says anyway. when the armstrong wife comes along we will plot when they met and we will go from there but aside from that! he was a bit of a player, enjoying the attention and action if you catch my drift.
UPDATED NOV 24: cue graduating college, moving to ashcroft in his early twenties and he went to work in the force for two-ish years until he was qualified, fit enough and had the experience to apply for the fbi as a special agent. blood, sweat and tears went into this passion of his and lord behold, he got in. it’s fair to say that dante should be married to his job, bc he honestly loves it so much and worked so hard to get in. it’s a bit sad. that’s where he’s been since his mid twenties. cue actual marriage and along came their first child.
UPDATED NOV 24: the main goal in his life when children started coming into the picture was to go out everyday and protect his family, no matter the cost. if he worked a 80 hour week to solve a case or to lock up criminals, then so be it. that was more people who cold potentially hurt his family behind bars.
dante is a family man as much as he can be, but he finds it hard to separate work and home as they both mean so much to him. so yes, he is a workaholic and the things he has seen through the years as brought him night terrors but he loves his family to death. anyone touches them and he will go wild.
ADDED NOV 24: dante is one of those parents that has always said it how it is, not wanting to lie (to a certain extent) to them or shielding them from the dangers of the real world. he is a softy especially in times when his family are upset, things are happening, appts needed, etc, but he shows a lot of tough love. before he joined the fbi and the kids were little, he was as soft as one could be but with the trials of his line of work, he had to learn to be tough. that unfortunately comes home with him, like his work.
ADDED NOV 24: if there is a problem, dante wants ppl to tell him about it straight away and not cut out minor details. he needs to know everything and as soon as possible so he can help, can work it out whether that be work, social life, family, etc. he is v unpredictable with his response too so one day if someone doesn’t come to him abt something for a long time, he could be rather tame and just move on with it. on another day, he could go off his rocker. you can’t really pick it esp when he comes across as being cold. (he’s not!! he is really warm with those he trusts and loves i SWEAR)
dante not long had become a supervisory special agent when mateo’s case came up. dante found himself being emotionally drawn to mateo and the situation at hand, having always struggled with not letting things get personal. so he offered him protection, took him in and opened up his home for him. of course, keeping him around is detrimental to the case and there’s no way he will be letting him go any time soon, but dante cannot help but feel protective over him. he is putting his family at risk by bringing him in but he doesn’t regret it and is more determined to resolve the case.
UPDATED NOV 24: emilio is now caught and dante is suspended for using his weapon. now begins the process of gather evidence, trials, etc.
personality.
he is completely unpredictable ; you may think he’ll react to a situation one way but will completely go the opposite. he says things that would be unexpected from him and he keeps shit real. he won’t sit there and talk abt the world being a wonderful place bc he will laugh in your face and tell you to fuck off to fairyland. he’s seen too much shit and done too much shit to know that life is not a movie.
he can come across as cold but he just doesn’t like to talk if he has nothing to say and he has a resting bitch face, sorry.
UPDATED NOV 24: it can take a lot to anger dante but when he gets angry, oh you know about it. he’ll yell and throw things and throw a tantrum if it’s really bad but most of the time, he tries to keep quite calm. if it involves his family getting hurt, he’ll get violent, period. no one touches his family.
THIS: as much as he keeps a guard up due to his job and is a somewhat strict parent and whatnot, he is a sweetheart. he’ll make his kids breakfast in bed on the weekends and would come in and kiss their heads when he’d come home from work and he’d be the one setting up easter egg hunts and is MUCH more affection than his own parents. his family’s happiness brings him happiness and they’re really the only people that see him smile often. also, he won’t go to work without telling them all he loves them. always. even if they’re sick of it.
UPDATED NOV 24: also, he beats himself up and is normally the one that tears himself down to shit. once he has his mind set in a bad way, he’ll tear himself to pieces and he really is his own worst enemy. and it’s bad. like, he beats himself up about everything and even won’t sleep at night over little things like having a fight with the kids, or not filling in paperwork right, or not speaking to his wife one night bc he is just too Stressed. v much is not okay
ADDED NOV 24: bc of this he tends to push ppl away, very badly too. he doesn’t think abt himself often and just wants to make those he loves happy, but he just??? can’t sometimes??? and i think that can be so frustrating
bonus point ; he is a very passionate lover!
secret.
in terms of his secret!! when he was in his final year of college, dante was mucking around with a group of friends throwing a football and tackling one another in between lectures. he had run backward off of the grass onto the path to catch the football and one of the guys ran and tackled him, knocking him to the ground with a very nasty blow to the head.
knocked out cold, dante was taken to the hospital were he had a severe concussion but there was no bleeding in or around the brain.
after this he became violently ill ; he knew that concussion caused disorientation but this was weeks, even a couple months after the incident and he was still having trouble. he suffered from severe headaches, vomiting, eyesight troubles and even his personality changed.
dante knew he wasn’t okay so he went to a couple doctors, had a bunch of neurological tests, ct and mri scans and he was then diagnosed with non-communicating acquired hydrocephalus. basically, the blow to his head caused one of the ventricles in his brain to block which restricted the flow of csf ( cerebrospinal fluid ).
with that, a shunt was surgically inserted in his brain to drain the excess fluid to other parts of his body and he has lived his life with this as his own personal secret. he hasn’t told his wife or children and his siblings and parents are the only ones who know ( bc they were by his side ofc ).
UPDATED NOV 24: he’s had regular check ups every so many years and as of lately, the shunt has started to play up and he’s suffering from headaches for a while now. will he do anything abt it? probs not. there has been too much going on for him to even think about himself.

How to Take a Sabbatical, According to 6 People Who Did
Imagine this -- you spend an entire month backpacking throughout Southeast Asia, drinking from coconuts on the beaches of southern Thailand, hiking the mountains in Vietnam, and seeing Angkor Wat at sunrise.
Best of all? You're getting paid to do so, and you have the same job waiting back home that you had when you left.
Surprisingly, that type of experience just might be possible with a sabbatical.
Whether you're hiking the Appalachian trail or spending the month learning a new skill, a sabbatical is often a critical opportunity to regain focus and clarity, relax, or check off a bucket-list item. If your employer offers you the option to take a sabbatical, it's a good idea to take one.
However, a sabbatical can seem daunting, and "wasting" your sabbatical on a bad decision can seem more frustrating than not going at all. To combat these challenges, I spoke with six employees at HubSpot who each took a month-long sabbatical at their five-year anniversary. Keep reading to get some ideas for how you want to spend your sabbatical.
But first -- what's a sabbatical?
How long is a sabbatical?
It depends on the stipulations provided by your employer, but typically, a sabbatical can last anywhere from one month to two years. Of course, you will likely have a shorter sabbatical if it's a paid sabbatical, and a longer one if it's unpaid.
What's a sabbatical?
Unlike vacation, a sabbatical is an extended break from work. Employers can offer either unpaid or paid sabbaticals, but typically guarantee an employee's position remain open until the employee returns from their leave.
The length of a sabbatical is up to the discretion of your employer, as are the terms and conditions. Many companies encourage higher retention rates by offering sabbaticals to employees only after a certain period of time -- at Adobe Systems, an employee is eligible for a four-week sabbatical after five years, and a six week sabbatical after fifteen years.
Some companies incentivize employees to pursue professional development by offering a paid sabbatical only if an employee uses the time in a certain manner. For instance, Deloitte offers both paid and unpaid options. A Deloitte employee can choose to take an unpaid one-month sabbatical at any time, or a three-to-six month sabbatical that "can be taken to pursue personal or professional growth opportunities in the areas of career development or volunteerism."
Employees at Deloitte who choose the three-to-six month option will receive 40% of their pre-sabbatical base salary.
At HubSpot, employees are eligible for a four-week paid sabbatical, but only once they've been at HubSpot for five years -- however, this might look different at your company.
It's important to note, sabbaticals can be incredibly effective solutions to turnover rates at your company. Oftentimes, people will work in certain roles until they're exhausted, and then feel they need some time off from work, or even a career-change, to recharge. A sabbatical is an alternative solution to this problem, and allows your employees to return to their roles happier and more productive.
Additionally, your employees will likely gain fresh ideas and perspectives during their sabbaticals. Perhaps they'll observe new potential markets, learn a new skill, or observe how a competitor in another country is successfully solving a problem with which your company has struggled.
Sabbatical Ideas
To get ideas for your sabbatical, take a look at the diverse experiences of six different HubSpot employees.
1. Inbound Marketing Specialist Dan Sally's Sabbatical to Rio de Janeiro
"In July of 2014, I started learning Brazilian Portuguese and, after about five months, got to the point where I was proficient enough to take lessons entirely in the language. I was lamenting the fact that, with a wife and four kids, I’d probably never get the chance to get the immersion I needed to bring my skills to the next level, when HubSpot announced our sabbatical program.
I had just hit my five year anniversary, so the timing was perfect.
My family and I rented an apartment in Rio de Janeiro for the month of July, one block from the beaches at Ipanema. We spent the month swimming, visiting all the sites of Rio, and ate red meat and churros pretty much every day.
Leaving work behind wasn’t a huge issue, as I was working in sales for our Dublin office at the time and Europe shuts down in the summer. Even if it were, being in Rio with four kids would be enough of a distraction to keep my mind off things."
2. VP of Marketing Meghan Keaney Anderson's Sabbatical to Her Hometown
"You may think sabbatical and immediately have your imagination jump to exotic locations or wild adventures. Mine did not. For my sabbatical I rented a quiet house by the harbor in my hometown of Marblehead, Massachusetts. I spent the entire time taking long walks with my dog and sitting in a rocking chair on the front porch.
Above all, I wanted some time to clear my head. Going somewhere familiar and watching my dog sleep in the sun was that precise thing. I am so grateful I did."
3. Senior Director of Customer Selling Corey Beale's Sabbatical to Costa Rica
"For my 31 days I elected to rent a house in Costa Rica and live the surfing life as if I was retired and just doing my thing. I ended up renting this incredible house just minutes from the beach. As you’d expect when you send an open invite to friends and family saying you've rented a beach house and there are open bedrooms available, people are more than happy to take you up on the offer. We had a fun rotation of guests coming and going each week, which meant there were always laughs and adventures to be shared. It was also rewarding that I was able to pay a vacation forward to my parents, and host them for once.
I’m a big fan of earning good karma on trips, so I decided to donate some of the HubSpot provided money to a local school and I ended up bringing home a stray dog! Once his paperwork was all set, I brought him stateside. Best of all, he was adopted by a fellow HubSpotter and he's already been in the office and gotten plenty of HubSpot love.
Hopefully everyone who becomes eligible for a sabbatical takes advantage of it and does something on their bucket list, or several things on their bucket list, with the time off. It’s well worth it, and I for one am incredibly thankful that HubSpot provides the opportunity to partake."
4. Principal III Customer Success Manager Kate Gillette Horne's Sabbatical to California
"There are so many directions you can take for your sabbatical and the best direction to go can also be very dependent on your current lifestyle and living situation. My husband and I threw around a ton of ideas as there are many things on my bucket list, but we also had a baby that was about to turn one and no local family (or any that would take a baby for over two weeks).
Traveling the coast of California was always on our list, and we decided that option would be very baby-friendly. Preparation at work was fairly easy because my team has a customer facing team alias for emergencies, which we can put in our out-of-office. So during any time out of office, the team picks up your slack and you pick up their slack when they are out.
The great thing about HubSpot is that since everyone has the opportunity to take a sabbatical (and any vacation), no one minds helping out and supporting the current person who's out, so I never felt like I was burdening anyone and also don't feel like it's a burden to support others who are out -- which makes the month off 10x better. The only major source of stress of the whole process was making sure I picked the absolute best path up the coast."
5. Product Editor-In-Chief Beth Dunn's Sabbatical at Home
"I think the most important thing about planning your sabbatical is that you don’t bow to pressure to make it amazing in some traditional way. If you’re truly desperate to go on a month-long trek across vast empty landscapes, then by all means do it. But if secretly you’d rather stay home with your cats and knit by the fire (which is what I did), then you should do that instead. Nobody’s grading you on your sabbatical. You shouldn’t 'do it for the ‘gram.' This is for you -- to rest and recharge, whatever that happens to mean for you. Maybe mix a little travel with some downtime at home. Or indulge in nonstop travel if that’s right for you. Or don’t budge from your home turf, and really revel in that.
Just pay close attention to which ideas for your sabbatical make your heart sing, and which ones make your stomach hurt. And follow the song.
Whatever you do, it’s not a bad idea to focus on something tangible you’ll take away with you as a souvenir of the event.
One friend of mine wanted to collect a jar of sand from a particular hidden cove on the Mediterranean Sea. Now it sits on her desk and reminds her of the promise she made herself when she finally got there.
I knitted myself a sabbatical sweater, which actually has a secret message woven into those cables that only I can read. (Knitters will understand what I mean.) It isn’t so much about 'having something to show for it' as much as it is about crafting your sabbatical so that it gives you the space to remember something about yourself that you might have forgotten, or to resolve something new that you want to recall. Try to come out of your sabbatical with some sort of message to your future self, something your sabbatical self would want you to remember."
6. Marketing Team Manager Al Biedrzycki's Sabbatical Building a Guitar
"I wanted to spend my sabbatical doing something creative and something that aligned with my hobbies. I also wanted to ensure it was something that would also only be available to me if I were to have a month of time off. I did some research (and deferred to Andrew Quinn, who had built a guitar already) and ended up booking a two-week intensive course with Charles Fox in Portland, Oregon.
The process of leaving work wasn't too difficult -- I had my current direct report holding down the fort while I was out and it also was the summer (June) so the work cadence was a bit lighter. Once I got back, it took me a few days to adjust and get back into the swing of things -- mostly catching up on what happened and working through my inbox."
How to Take a Sabbatical
If your company offers a sabbatical program, you'll likely need to follow certain guidelines to submit the request for a sabbatical. You can probably find the rules and regulations listed on your company's website.
However -- what if your company doesn't have a fully-fledged sabbatical program? Perhaps you can still take one, by following these steps:
Consider how your sabbatical might contribute to the company's bottom-line down the road. Perhaps you're hoping to expand into new markets, in which case you might propose a month-long sabbatical to visit the city in which you want to expand to get to know the local culture and language. Alternatively, maybe you feel burnt out after five years in a role. You might need a break to recharge, get some fresh perspectives, and come back refreshed and ready to take charge once again.
Once you've figured out how your sabbatical could truly make a difference for your company or team, draft a proposal. Then, schedule a meeting with your manager or director.
Begin by saying something like this -- "I've been thinking about how I can bring more value to my work, and I believe taking a sabbatical to learn XYZ will help me succeed. I've drafted a proposal for you to review."
Alternatively, you might say, "After [recent accomplishment or promotion], I'm feeling a little burnt out. I think a sabbatical could be an effective opportunity for me to recharge as I prepare to lead our team this fall. I've drafted a proposal for your consideration."
Once you get approval from your manager or director, you might still be nervous about taking the time off, unpaid. Fortunately, there are a few grants and scholarships for which you can apply, to help you successfully finance your sabbatical.
Here's a list of resources to look into:
The National Academies of Sciences Engineering Medicine
Louisville Institute Sabbatical Grant for Researchers
The Healing Trust Sabbatical Grant
Julie L. Rogers Sabbatical Program
Professional Fellows Program

Viper Cache Review : Bonus
Viper Cache - what is it? Viper Cache it's the easiest and the fastest cache plugin on the market with almost no server lag - this wordpress plugin will make your wordpress sites up to 10x faster in 1 click.
The #1 biggest problem all WordPress users face is site speed... and of course the #1 fix is cache. The reason why cache works so well is ... it builds a "ready to go" version of all the pages on your site. This massively reduces your sites workload & of course massively increases your page speed - which means higher site rankings, more traffic & more sales for you.
But not all cache plugins are the same... infact they are probably slowing down your site. If your WordPress site is slow & you're not using a cache plugin you are almost certainly wasting traffic. In WordPress every page requested has to be compiled by your site... that takes longer than regular html pages especially when your site gets busy.
At 3+ seconds load speed you lose 50%+ of traffic & at 20+ seconds you lose 95%+ of traffic according to Kissmetrics... so that's a serious problem specially if the site makes you money of if you are paying for ads. So, ignoring site speed today is literally like throwing money down the drain ...especially as 52% of all traffic is mobile.
Currently there are a lot of issues with cache plugins :
Current cache plugins are needlessly complicated to use & often break your site
Most free cache plugins are regularly exploited by hackers
All cache plugins clear the cache on ALL PAGES even if you change 1 word on 1 page - which created needless load on your server
Conventional cache preloading causes additional site lag on large sites
What may also interest you is that the best paid plugin was outperformed by it's free rivals on independent tests. So till now the choice was pretty poor. Viper Cache is a new product that answers the shortcomings of all the other market leading cache products & finally resolves these age old problems for everyone.

10 Years of Running This Business: My Top 10 Red-Pill Truths
Ten years ago this week, I officially launched M&I.
If you do a quick survey of your friends, acquaintances, and co-workers, you probably can’t find anyone else who has held the same job for 10 years.
Which makes me lucky, insane, or a bit of both.
To put the time in perspective, I started out when Lehman Brothers and Bear Stearns still existed, and when Donald Trump was best known for The Apprentice.
The first iPhone had been released months ago, everyone was incredulous at Facebook’s $15 billion valuation (it’s now worth $500+ billion), and people were certain that Hillary Clinton would be the next President.
And I was young, naïve, and eager to quit my job and live the dream running an online business from a beach in Thailand.
Since then, I’ve taken the red pill.
I’ve launched products and services, hired and fired people, survived crazy relationships in both New York and Korea, and traveled and lived around the world.
And I’ve I learned some uncomfortable truths in the process.
I came up with dozens, but here are my top 10:
1) If You’re an International Student, Watch Out! Universities Are Exploiting You
There has been a massive increase in the number of international students at universities in the U.S., U.K., and other Western countries over the past decade.
Universities might claim they’re doing this to “embrace diversity” or “go global,” but don’t be fooled: It’s mostly about the money.
International students in the U.S. are not eligible for most government aid, so students must pay close to the list price – which means they either come from wealthy families or borrow hundreds of thousands of dollars.
Many universities, especially in the lower tiers, are in dire straits financially, so they need the money. It’s a match made in heaven.
Just one small problem: It is very difficult to get a work visa after graduation, especially if you majored in a non-STEM subject. And even if you do get a work visa, there’s no guarantee that you’ll get to stay in the country indefinitely.
So, you apply, accept admission, pay a small fortune… and then get sent back after graduation.
To get around this, you need to start early and major in a STEM subject, attend a Master’s program and do the same, or give up and return to your home country.
2) The Fundamentals of Recruiting Don’t Change, But the Details Do
The truth is, not that much about finance recruiting has changed, despite what random 18-year-olds say online.
I just glanced at my emails from 2007-2008, and there were a lot of questions about networking, winning interviews from an unknown state school, overcoming low grades, and moving into banking as a career changer.
And today… the questions and comments are virtually identical.
Even in the reader interviews I conduct, the accounts of networking and interviewing at banks have stayed consistent over the years.
The top three points that have changed are:
Candidate Pool – Banks can no longer get “the best and the brightest” because finance jobs have become less appealing. Smart and accomplished people from top schools still go into the field, but the average quality is lower.
Timing – Summer-internship recruiting and buy-side recruiting now start so early that it is almost comical; these early start dates partially explain why banks no longer get the best candidates. If this trend continues, banks will soon be recruiting summer interns from elementary school, 15 years in advance of internships.
Required Technical Knowledge – You need to know significantly more about accounting, valuation, and financial modeling to win offers these days, particularly at the elite boutiques.
These points may seem significant, but think about how much has not changed:
Your story is still critical, and you still tell it in a similar way.
Technical questions still cover the same topics.
You still use emails, LinkedIn, and informational interviews to network in the same way.
I have been revising and updating articles on this site, but that’s mostly because I didn’t capture everything correctly the first time around – not because there have been massive changes.
3) Your University Friends & Network Are Incredibly Valuable… But Only Up to a Certain Age
I’ve lived and worked around the world in the past decade: South Korea, Australia, Argentina, Finland (kind of), Spain, and more.
But I’ve made almost no long-term friends in these places.
Almost everyone in my current social circle is from university or is connected to it in some way (friend of a friend, referral, etc.).
In school, you don’t need a specific reason to become friends with someone, which makes it easier to develop friendships “just because.”
Once you graduate, friendships tend to become more situational and transient.
You might become friends with someone at your new job, but once the person leaves, that’s it.
But the network you develop in school tends to withstand work and geographical changes more readily.
On the other hand, it also gets weaker over time as people settle down, have families, and drift into new fields.
So, you need to replace lost connections and develop a non-university network as you get older.
I’ve done a poor job of this, so I’m not sure I have any specific tactical advice.
But I have observed that “work friends” tend to disappear more quickly than others, so a starting point might be to depend more on activities/hobbies and less on co-workers.
4) Don’t Build a $5,000 Product for a $500 Market
One of my biggest mistakes, detailed in Part 5 of my Life Story, was taking the financial modeling courses and guides I created in 2009-2011 and revamping them to make them 10x more detailed.
Each new case study was based on a real company or deal, and there were SEC filings, press releases, industry research, channel checks, and more.
There were 32-page stock pitches, 50-slide pitch books, Excel models with thousands of rows, and 100+ hours of video.
And… no one cared.
Crickets.
I made the mistake of listening to a vocal minority who wanted “more advanced material” rather than the vast majority who simply wanted efficient training.
Also, I ignored the ugly truth that most people who buy educational products – even expensive ones – do not use them.
We get customers who pay $1,000 or $2,000 and then don’t even open the files or submit their resume/CV for editing.
And if someone does use the product extensively, he/she still tends to value brevity more than 543,123 hours of training.
More comprehensive products don’t necessarily sell better; people are willing to pay a certain amount for certain products/services, and “quality” is tough to define and use as a selling point.
I’m now reversing this mistake by replacing the courses with shorter, simpler versions, but I should never have gone down this path in the first place.
5) Don’t Hire Friends, Family, or Acquaintances
Almost all my hiring mistakes have happened because I hired a friend, a friend-of-a-friend, or an acquaintance rather than a professional.
If you run a business, you may be tempted to hire someone you know because “He/she would be great, and you already know him/her!”
But as Admiral Ackbar might say, it’s a trap!
People you already know personally tend not to respect you as an authority figure, and they often drag personal issues into the job.
One time, I hired a friend to do some design work in the early days of M&I, and he was 6 months late finishing the project because he was busy with his new band.
Another time, a friend I had hired in a customer support role couldn’t answer questions because his roommate locked him out, and he had to use an ax to force open the door.
No joke – he sent me the photos of the broken door.
You get the idea.
You could make a case for co-founding a company with a friend, family member, or acquaintance, but stay away from hiring them as subordinates.
6) If Customer Service is Killing You, You’re Doing Something Wrong
You read a lot of stories about “customer-centric” companies like Zappos killing it because they are responsive and willing to chat with you on the phone 24/7 to resolve problems.
I followed a similar philosophy a long time ago.
I used to kill myself staying up until 3 AM fixing customers’ Excel files, answering every incoming pre-sales question, and even offering phone consultations.
If someone wasn’t happy with even one small part of the product, I went out of my way to please them with free bonuses, services, and my own time.
But eventually, I realized it was all pointless:
80%+ of Customers Don’t Even Ask Questions: There are about 34,000 active BIWS accounts and ~13,000 submitted questions right now. Even if you assume that each question is from one unique customer, 62% of our users have never even asked a question. And the real percentage is much higher – probably 80-85% – because the same 5-10 users tend to ask questions repeatedly.
Fewer Than 5% Ask Questions Before Buying: Yes, even with products priced at $197, $497, $997, and $1,497, we get relatively few questions. Be skeptical of people who claim you “need” to do phone or in-person sales above a certain price point.
The problem with the “Zappos approach” is that someone with complex or demanding requests is unlikely to be satisfied by any response.
You can go out of your way and spend hours attending to the problem, and the person will still not be satisfied because he/she is inherently a difficult person.
So, why bother?
“Customer service” might be a differentiating factor in a commoditized business (online shoe sales), but if you’re selling highly specialized or luxury products/services, don’t kill yourself.
Get the offer, the pricing, and the marketing right, and provide competent-but-not-Zappos-like service afterward.
7) The Facts Don’t Matter – Only the Story Does
When I started this site, I had a serious problem: I knew the industry, and I was confident I could coach clients and teach the technical side, but I had zero credibility.
I was very young, and in real life, I didn’t come across like the stereotypical banker at all.
I seemed more like a tech/startup person, and people sometimes didn’t believe I was in finance.
So, I did what any good storyteller would do: I invented a new identity (“The Inquisitor”) that was better aligned with the market.
If I could demonstrate my competence with content and client results, my actual credentials and qualifications – or lack thereof – wouldn’t matter.
Early articles made it sound like I was Patrick Bateman crossed with Jordan Belfort from The Wolf of Wall Street.
I never gave detailed information about myself because I wanted you to come up with your own story about me.
Any story that you create and tell yourself is far more powerful than any story that I could tell you.
It worked!
Back in 2008-2009, many visitors assumed that I was an anonymous Director or Managing Director at a large investment bank.
Anyone who read between the lines and beyond the lines was skeptical, but this is the Internet: Critical thinking is an endangered species.
The usual reaction was: “He has a ton of helpful, in-depth content. Judging by this content and my interactions, he must be an experienced banker who knows this stuff really well.”
To get around my lack of formal credentials and qualifications, I relied on the story.
And if you want to get ahead, so should you.
8) Raise Prices
When Tim Ferriss interviewed Marc Andreessen on his podcast, he asked him the famous “billboard” question:
Tim Ferriss: “If you could have one billboard, anywhere with anything on it, what would you put on it? If you wanted to convey a short message to as many people as possible.”
Marc Andreessen: “I’ve got one, I’ve actually thought about hiring a skywriter to do this one. Right in the heart of San Francisco would be a billboard with just two words on it: Raise Prices.”
Pricing is the #1 mistake that startups make.
It’s certainly one of the top 2-3 mistakes I’ve made.
And it’s almost always the same mistake: Entrepreneurs price their products and services too low, which sets the perception that their products and services can’t be any good.
Then, they can’t afford the sales & marketing required to sell them… and when nothing sells, they cut prices again, making their products look even worse and even harder to sell.
Here are my top pricing mistakes:
Industry-Specific Courses: Initially priced at $97, even though competitors’ courses were in the $497 – $997 range. I should have started at $247 or $347 at the very least; when I finally increased prices to $247, units sold increased!
Interview Guide: Started at $47, went to $97 after a year, and stayed at $97 for almost a decade, even as the content and services multiplied. When we raised the price to $197 in June this year, the dollar volume of sales increased by 2.5x.
Releasing New Versions for Free: When Microsoft releases a new version of Office, do you get it for free? No! You pay for an upgrade, or you get it as part of an annual or monthly subscription.
If I could go back in time, I would fix everything above and gradually increase prices over the years.
9) Make Your Money Early – But Not Too Early
As I’ve written about before, money affects you in unexpected ways.
Coming from a lower-middle-class family and graduating from university with over $100K in student loans, I’ve become more isolated as I’ve gained wealth.
It’s difficult to relate to friends and family members who are struggling to earn more when I have the opposite problem (money, but almost no free time).
But… I’m much happier to be in this position than the “I’m in my mid-to-late 30s, don’t have a stable career, and don’t have enough money” position.
Once you reach that age, it becomes difficult to amass significant wealth with conventional methods.
Careers like investment banking, consulting, and private equity are shut off, so your main options are to start your own business, join a VC-backed startup and win the lottery, or start a side hustle such as real estate.
Those sound nice in theory, but your free time and motivation drop as you get older.
Having kids will annihilate your free time, but even without them, you’ll get sucked into more family/legal/other issues, you may develop health problems, and your day job will get busier with age.
So, if your goal is wealth, act on it when you’re young.
But there is one corollary: Don’t make too much money when you’re too young.
Most of my friends and acquaintances who hit the jackpot by working at companies like Facebook or Google in their early 20s haven’t done much since then.
Making millions or tens of millions at that age is like entering a cheat code in a video game: You win the game, but the boss battles are boring.
It’s good to struggle, fail, pivot, and change because it makes the journey more interesting and the final boss battle more rewarding.
As a rough guideline, I’d say that 20 years after university graduation is a good time frame to target for “financial security.”
I won’t define that term precisely because it means different things to different people.
At that point, you could downshift and focus on family or double down and feel secure enough to start another venture.
10) Don’t Stay in the Finance Industry for the Long Term
You could still make a strong case for starting out in investment banking and spending a few years there.
You gain a well-defined skill set, a solid network, and client/transaction experience that will be valuable everywhere.
But the long-term industry prospects have become much worse – everything from compensation to automation to the increasingly-under-pressure hedge fund/asset management/private equity industries.
Plus, you do nothing useful for the world.
Most of your work involves making rich people even richer, so you arguably make the world worse.
There are occasional exceptions, but they are few and far between.
The only good reasons to stay in finance for the long term are:
You Care About Money and Nothing Else – For example, $1 million is not enough; you need at least $10-20 million, or you’ll be a failure.
You Find the Work Legitimately Interesting – If you enjoy the process of digging into financial statements, wining/dining clients, or advising on deals, then sure, knock yourself out.
Another 10 Years?
As you can tell from the tone of this article, my enthusiasm has declined quite a bit.
I could explain that in many ways: Worsening market conditions, sillier and sillier questions, less rewarding interactions, and increased time spent on minutiae.
But the simplest explanation is often the best one: Ten years is a really long time to spend on one job, especially when that job barely changes.
I don’t necessarily want to quit, but I do expect to change the format of this site in the future.
For example, I may delete the less-popular articles, focus on keeping the top 100-200 updated, and occasionally write something new.
The good news is that I’m more interested in expanding/improving the BIWS courses, so you’ll see updates there far into the future.
I could see that lasting for another decade – even if M&I, in its curren from ronnykblair digest https://www.mergersandinquisitions.com/10-years-top-10-red-pill-truths/

Fast Food Genocide with Dr. Joel Fuhrman
Did you know that eating fast food regularly has a 7 times higher risk of stroke before 45 years? Dr. Joel Fuhrman, an Ivy League educated MD and an international speaker on nutrition has an important new book out Fast Food genocide which highlights how we are slowly killing ourselves and our children. He does a great job of revealing how unhealthy food is also marginalizing our most vulnerable populations. It causes diseases like heart attacks, strokes, cancer, obesity and more. He offers an inspiring message of natural healing. That we have the power to change our health and that its very easy to implement: just change what you put in your mouth!
Here are key questions he answers and highlights from his answers:
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
03:11 1. What is fast food?
- All processed foods
- Food with flour, sugar and oil like candy, soda, donuts, cookies
- Food that can be consumed fast
- These foods contain calories that are densed and are absorbed rapidly in the bloodstream which signals brain stimulation that is addicting
- These food contain synthetic ingredients and chemicals which make them further damaging to the body
- They don't contain significant amount of micronutrients
- Most processed food and junk food lowers intelligence
- The major source of calories the americans consume right now are in the category of fast food
- It also damages our genes resulting to children with lower intelligence, to immune conditions, autism, violence, obesity, diabetes and cancer.
Facts that most people don't know about:
- The consumption of donuts, cupcakes and candies as early age 10 years shows a greater relation with adult crime and illegal drug use than any other parameter including lack of parenting or poverty.
- Majority of the people in federal prisons are there for nonviolent drug related offenses.
- We flood our criminal system with people who are using drugs and this starts with the addiction to sugar and other fast food and processed foods which destroys brain cells and gives an abnormal brain that seeks stimulation later on in life.
- These foods increase violence, aggression, lack of concentration and inability to make logical decisions.
08:08 2. Who did you write Fast Food Genocide for?
- This is a book for everyone to read because people don't know the implications of what they're putting in their mouth.
- Studies show that people who eat fast food just 2 times a week, just 2 servings of white flour, sugar, oil, commercial baked goods a week doubles the risk of depression.
- We underestimate the effects of poor food and poor nutrition on mental illness
- This will allow us to make better decisions in the future, to work together on equality, wellness for all people and to solve healthcare for the people
- Eating just one helping of fries can change your health for the worst. There is no concept of moderation for fried foods just like there's no eating heroine and cocaine in moderation.
15:39 3. How do you switch from a life of convenience?
- Lots of frozen meals are junkfood. But if you freeze fresh vegetables and fruits they still contain over 90% of their original nutrient content.
- The most important thing that's proved to extend human life and extend healthy life expectancy is eating a diet rich in micronutrients.
- Micronutrients do not contain calories. These contain vitamins, minerals, phytochemicals antioxidants. Many of these are destroyed with heat.
- The pesticide residue is not the major source of disease, but lack of nutrients.
- It is recommended to have mild caloric restriction (not overeating calories)
- A high micronutrient environment includes over a pound need of vegetables/fruits a day
- What makes fastfood dangerous is that its grilled, fried in high flame, and reheating oil increases rancidity.
Effects of fried food:
- These can create cancer cells and damage sperm and eggs. It causes defects in children.
- Fried foods are dangerous one serving of fast food french fries a week increases breast cancer of 26%
- Even low levels of fast food consumption aligns with cancer later on in life
22:00 4. What should a micronutrient rich diet look like? How much toxicity can a body handle through fast food?

VELOCITY IN SOFTWARE DEVELOPMENT
Every unmarried CEO of any it enterprise desires to build software quicker. Time is the most luxurious and valuable resource. You can't waste it on re-work, refactoring, meetings, bodily activities. Right? It depends...
Many groups develop up, slow down, and die. Suitable development pace is vital for surviving. Consider, you've got a in reality wonderful vision confirmed in many instances with the aid of many humans. You already know for certain (properly, this is uncommon in practice, however we're going to gasoline our imagination, adequate?) That this product will be a real hit. All you need is to finish it.
You have a group of dozens proficient and experienced builders, you crunch and ship something in years. The crew is exhausted. The product implements approximately 10% of the vision. There is a massive capability, all and sundry says that, however 10% isn't sufficient to penetrate the marketplace. You conflict for some extra months, have average traction, have below average sales, haven't any money and, in the long run, no company. Amazing imaginative and prescient is terminated by means of slow execution. Who guilty? Perhaps the trouble become too difficult and two years is perfectly affordable time frame for it. Maybe the crew rushed too rapid, had a few correct releases, however got buried with the aid of complexity and technical debt in the long run. Speed in software development is an incredibly complex entity. It's far encouraged by using many stuff, frequently in a shocking way. In this text i will try to proportion my thoughts approximately speed.
SIDES OF SPEED
The general public have a tendency to consider speed as a unmarried entity, but it is not. There are very exceptional forms of speed: quick-term pace (dash) and lengthy-time period speed (marathon). Dash vs. Marathon is an excellent analogy right here. In software program development (and in strolling as well) you can't have both. Allows take a few summary attempt unit, like factor. Working complete throttle in a sprint mode you deliver one hundred factors in line with month. Here is my first argument:
YOU CAN NOT PRESERVE A DASH TEMPO ON AN EXTENDED PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT DISTANCE.
Maybe you could keep a hundred pt/month pace three-6 months, however it's far extraordinarily not going you could do this for a 12 months. Furthermore, draw back increases considerably with high-tempo development. And some day you'll regret the entirety.
At some point maximum of the developers will reach a "f*** it point" (pink dot) and drop performance noticeably.
Your intention is to run a totally lengthy distance (years) with the best possible pace. That's what marathon is ready. You need staying power and evenness.
The way to create software program faster over an extended time stretch? It's a "1 million greenback" question. Most in all likelihood, the solution is unique for each employer, however nonetheless we will construct an affordable rough version that can be beneficial.
Dash, marathon and... Intervals!
At the beginning sight, there are just three alternatives.
CHOICE 1. EXCESSIVE DASH
You could run complete velocity, 12-14 hours/day, fueled with the aid of lively beverages, caffeine, sugar and god knows what else. You could be an all-nighter, sleep for some hours and spend minimal time on ingesting, washing, exercising, and so on. I'll provide you with a month. Perhaps 3 in case you are in an ideal shape. The best aspect about this mode is that everyone is aware of how terrible it is. Burnout is fast.
CHOICE 2. MODERATE SPRINT
You may work 8-10 hours/day, squeezing each drop of productivity. No small talks, no recreation sports at paintings, no a laugh. A few companies do nothing to make work exciting, tough and a laugh. Tasks are constantly past due and all and sundry is usually underneath strain. Unfortunately, this mode can last for years. Human beings can get used to it and don’t observe how depressing they are. They are attempting to locate compensation at home with households and pastimes. That may be a real chance, when you consider that after several months of such work productivity drops and no one notices. It may take several years to think deep about you and have a few insights.
CHOICE 3. MARATHON
This mode looks foremost. You do your first-rate running 6-8 hours/day, locate time to relax and exercising. You don't trap each single minute and have the posh to think about a hassle for some time. No rush to push matters out of the door proper now! That sounds good. However, many managers are not satisfied with marathon pace. They want to deliver matters faster. I accept as true with this natural mode is pretty uncommon in reality. In most corporations managers attempt to velocity things up and try this within the most silly manner, using time beyond regulation, undertaking pushing and “we're the heroes” motivation.
At the first sight, it looks as if there's not anything extra. But i assume we've got one extra option. I had by no means heard about it, to be honest.
CHOICE 4. DURATIONS
I am now not talking about iterative improvement. In truth, iterative improvement may be similarly implemented to slight sprint or marathon modes. C program language period development is when you blend modes. For a short period of time you could do sprints, and then switch to marathon mode. In my opinion, top schedule can be:
· 1 MONTH - RAPID PACE SPRINT
· THREE MONTHS - MARATHON
· 1 MONTH - SPEEDY PACE DASH
COMPETENCIES AND REVEL IN
It's miles quite apparent that skills improve development speed. More professional developers resolve problems quicker and create much less complicated solutions. A few say there may be 10x productivity distinction between extraordinarily skilled and less skilled builders. I don’t suppose it's miles a not unusual case even though.
The subsequent trivial question is what can be done to increase developers’ skills? First, you could lease handiest professional developers. That might paintings, but this model isn't always easily scalable. Skilled humans have a tendency to work on hard troubles that demand their capabilities. What number of groups within the international work on simply difficult troubles? No longer such a lot of. On the alternative side, in case your product isn't always rocket technology, you don’t need groups complete of PhD developers. So ability for any given organisation is different. A professional developer at Google does not identical a professional developer at a few outsourcing employer.
Adequate, you described professional developer in your agency, but still conflict to locate lots of them. Scalability problem stays. So you need to lease no longer-so-skilled builders as properly to grow. That is adequate, however it's miles actually required to hire individuals who want to analyze new things. How everybody will accumulate talents in the event that they don’t like to examine? Curiosity, lively thoughts, ardour — those merits are primary.
An organization must offer some thing it could to help human beings examine. A few options are under:
PURCHASE ANY BOOK HUMANS ASK FOR
Any enterprise need to have a very good library. Maximum amazing builders i recognise read plenty. There is no manner to pressure humans examine books, however at least it must be extraordinarily smooth to head and seize an awesome e-book to examine.
SHIP HUMANS TO CONFERENCES
Most of the people assume that meetings are a source of latest information. Maybe, however i reflect on consideration on them as passion-drivers. Meetings motivate you to hold getting to know, maintain trying new things and, within the high-quality case, offers you a few path.
I really like to go to conferences on subjects which are new to me. For example, after i started out to examine consumer revel in, i visited two large conferences. First one changed into especially useful, second one turned into not that top.
PREPARE MASTERING EVENTS
One of the exceptional manner to research something is to write a book approximately the topic. Much less intense way is to put together a presentation or a workshop. A corporation should organize internal meetings to reinforce this method. Now not every person is prepared to talk in audience, but many will strive. In our organization we have 2-day conferences each 6 months. There aren't any external speakers, all periods are prepared by means of our group individuals.
OFFER TIME TO ANALYZE NEW MATTERS
That doesn’t seem like a obligatory practice. Perhaps it isn't. Nonetheless if a enterprise affords some unfastened time exclusively committed to studying — that’s amazing. Famous 20% Google’s time is a great example (there are rumors that this practice become canceled already, however these rumors aren't proved). At 92 Technology we have orange Fridays.
Each Friday is devoted to non-public tasks or studying. Many human beings do courser guides, examine articles, test new technology. It's miles impossible to measure effectiveness of this exercise, however there are many benefits:
• In truth it manner four-day work weeks. At least the fifth day is not a common operating day.
• It attracts individuals who want to study, so it’s a massive plus for hiring.
• It's far easier to maintain people, considering they have a choice to strive some thing new on their personal.
• People accumulate new abilities faster.
There may be simplest one drawback — it probable reduces ordinary improvement speed. People work at some point a week much less, which is a right away 20% hit on improvement pace. What is greater critical? It relies upon. In case you are very near release, tactically it isn't wise to spend every Friday on education. In case you are in a marathon mode — it may be really worth it.
WASTE AND NON-COST INTRODUCED SPORTS
We’ve talked about distractions like Facebook or Skype. But, there are numerous risky sports that appear like actual paintings, however don’t generate any price in the end.
MEETINGS
Maximum meetings suck. Right here is a great assembly test i study in some book:
Consider how often you've got stated "wow. That turned into a high-quality meeting!"
I guess it changed into no longer so often. Larger businesses have greater conferences. Small agencies can stay with 0 conferences. Each unmarried meeting may be wasteful. Day by day stand-up meeting? Positive. UX meeting? Why now not. I'm able to easily imagine a completely wasteful each day meeting wherein everyone do popularity reporting and nobody cares what other humans communicate approximately. I attended many UX meetings that were painfully boring and generated not anything.
There are numerous books about efficient meetings. You already know what? They without doubt paintings. Every meeting needs to have a time table, organized individuals, excellent facilitation, sincere and open communication and clear results.
We are able to drop conferences absolutely true meetings are amusing and helpful. It's far an pastime in which you may speak troubles with different people, targeted and fully immersed into a discussion. I think meetings suck at idea era, but they're beneficial for idea sifting. Brainstorming isn't the excellent way to invent new thoughts. I trust in solitude, targeted questioning and time.
To generate something new you need to spend time and think.
Its miles naive to consider you can visit a meeting unprepared and clear up a problem.
GAME AT WORK
I'm hoping more and more corporations accept as true with people. I am hoping it is uncommon to see a scene like that now:
Manager comes to a kitchen at eleven am and see two builders sipping coffee, chatting with every different, smiling and giggling of something. Manager will become purple and shout “why the hell you are doing here? We've got a cut-off date this Friday!” Builders drop cups in a hurry and walk away.
Terrible... Paintings ought to now not be a run of the mill vicinity in which human beings code, take a look at and launch things. Creative paintings needs physical sports, pauses and talks. It is ideal to have a desk tennis, running shoes, yoga/dancing/something instructions right inside the workplace (and a bath of direction). Exercises help to drop stress level and assist people to be more effective in the long run.
Do you certainly think humans will absolutely alternate work for tennis, kicker or some thing else? If so, you have critical problems. Perhaps they may be uninterested and uninterested with tasks they'd remaining month. Or maybe you employed the incorrect human beings. Anyway, this is a manifestation of some thing incorrect occurring there.
So game at paintings is good. You might imagine about this time as a waste, but it is not.
GAINING KNOWLEDGE OF AT WORK
Every software program development agency wants to have individuals who study new things. Nonetheless, not so many corporations offer possibilities to learn new matters. We’ve already mentioned mastering in previous sections, but a few organizations believe that gaining knowledge of at work is a waste. Indeed it doesn’t generate any price, so this activity is non-cost delivered. In software development we ought to focus on “work smarter, not harder” and from this perspective learning at work turns into quite fascinating.
Can we measure the outcome of orange Fridays? Books? Meetings? Side initiatives? It’s truly hard. The final results is long time (years). And there may be no apparent model to quantify know-how into cash.
PAINTINGS / LIFE BALANCE
This section may be quick. We noted burnout already. Software improvement is an interest you may reflect on consideration on all the time. When you have a complicated problem within the software program, you're thinking about it anywhere. It suddenly pops up when you are on foot together with your lady friend, a few mind appear in a shower and your mind even attempts to reinforce the hassle in, well, the maximum beside the point moments. It's miles critical to discover ways to switch off. Sport, touring, yoga and interests are the pleasant applicants.
Organizations have to inspire humans to have some hobbies and aid them. This is actual for sport sports as properly.
0 overtime regulations have to be marketed via top managers. In case you paintings harder and harder at some point you'll work dumber and dumber.
WRAP-UP
I think it will be beneficial to stress a few points.
Software improvement pace / productiveness / pace is a complicated, interdependent and multifaceted concept. It has no smooth solution. You may shout at humans “paintings quicker!” You can’t blindly reduce corners and cognizance on price delivered activities most effective. The most effective answer is to think deeply approximately the organisation, development methods, human beings, gear, and so on. Build a model and suppose.
I am curious to increase the interval development concept similarly. It feels very fascinating to me and might very well be just the proper balance of top pace and proper patience. Marathon and mild sprints blend analogy opens many new guidelines to explore.
