i will!

i was thinking maybe fp was there first and had his own room or maybe his old roommate late idk but fred comes in and at first hes basically catatonic like he just spends all his time curled up in bed or when he has to leave the room he just finds a corner and stays there until he can go back. he doesnt talk to anyone. its a blessing and a curse cuz on the one hand fp gets a quiet roommate but on the other hand it kinda really annoys him

but then one night fps having a really bad nightmare and hes thrashing around in his bed and fred gets up and goes over to him and coaxes him awake and like.... its not the best scenario. cuz maybe fp grabs him and in his frantic state is about to start beating the shit outta fred and it kinda scares the shit outta fred but fp catches himself in time and he doesnt say thank you or anything. he just goes back to bed and freds like “um youre welcome ???” and fps laying in bed thinking about how his old roommate never helped him through a nightmare....

so ANYWAY fred starts coming out of his shell a little more (i like to think he sits and draws a lot... i dont know what this has to do with anything i just thought id share) and he and fp find out theyve got similar taste in music sometimes and movies and other interests (though when they do differ on things it turns into a whole argument but like a playful one which is surprising given how freds seen fp literally come to blows with other people for far simpler shit) and then maybe fred can show fp some of his drawings and maybe fp can ask for something specific or fred just draws something for fp anyway and fp hangs it up by his bed i do not know....

and after they start to form a sort of friendship the next time fps having a bad nightmare fred ends up crawling into his bed and holding him through it... and this is where the romance is born baby!!!

they would defend each other a lot too like during group therapy if one of them wasnt up to talking that day and the therapist kept pushing the other one would speak up and be like “he doesnt want to share so leave him alone!” and that kind of settles that.

them sitting together in the rec room to watch tv or on movie nights... or theyre always playing games together... out in the yard is when freds happiest cuz he gets to be outside in the sun and fp cannot get enough of him like he’ll just stare and stare at fred soaking up the rays he has never seen anything more beautiful 🤧

have also been thinking muchly about fp lashing out at the doctors and nurses for whatever reason like hes throwing shit and maybe got hold of a scalpel or something and theres all this yelling going on to try and restrain him and fred runs in and goes straight for fp cuz he knows how to handle him and one of the bigger dudes working there is holding him back cuz patients arent supposed to interfere with other patients but freds yelling at them to let him go and he can help fp! and finally one of the doctors is like “well we might as well let him try” and fred walks over to him all gentle and gets him to calm down and subdues him... yeah

and then i think they should sneak into supply closets and shit to fool around lmfao a nurse has definitely walked into their room on her morning rounds and found them snuggling in bed together but she was cool and didnt tell anyone but it certainly scared the shit out of them. but if their doctor started catching on to how close they were and was bringing it up during sessions.... i do not know

them squished together in those tiny ass beds under the covers at night telling each other secrets and playing with their hands and stealing kisses and soft touches.... also yeah....

making each other happy amidst miserable circumstances.... also just gonna throw this out there i feel like fps good at one flew over the cuckoos nest jack nicholson impressions lmao and that entertains fred

oh and fps always stealing candy out of vending machines for fred like he’ll go back to their room and just slip him a whole chocolate bar without saying anything and its basically christmas for fred :’)

The Six Realms

Okay, so I was pretty close to giving up on writing analyses but I'm back LMFAO plus I see we're close to 100 followers and I just want to thank you guys for being so very supportive <3

Alright, I'm not sure if anyone's ever written about this, but if an analysis like this exists, please do let me know because I'm kind of curious as to what other people think about this, too!

Remember that time Fukuchi spoke about bringing "about the five signs of an angel's death"?

I read a little bit more about it, and as a minor content warning: this analysis will focus on a few religious aspects (Buddhism + Hinduism). So if I get any of the facts wrong, firstly: I do not mean any disrespect to either religion, and secondly: please do correct me if I interpret anything in the wrong way.

Spoilers for BSD chapter 90 onwards + BEAST!AU under the cut!

So I'll start by talking about the Decay of Angels. As we all know, the members include Fyodor Dostoyevsky, Nikolai Gogol, Sigma, and Bram Stoker, and their leader, Fukuchi Ochi. After Fyodor's arrest, the Decay of Angels came into light with Nikolai murdering four government officials in a week. These murders symbolise the Buddhist cycle of existence, or otherwise known as samsara: the cycle of life, death, and rebirth.

"We are the Decay of Angels—hiding here as terrorists, a 'murder association', five people who will announce the demise of the celestial world."

Nikolai Gogol, chapter 57

Samsara is described to be a concept beyond human understanding. According to Hinduism, samsara is the physical world where every being has its soul trapped into a physical vessel. The Hindus believe that everything has a soul, and due to a soul's attachment to desire, it is forced into a deathless cycle of being born, dying, and reincarnating into a different body. In Buddhism, the ultimate way to break free from this cycle is by obtaining nirvana.

Nirvana is a Sanskrit word for the goal of the Buddhist path: enlightenment or awakening. In Pali, the language of some of the earliest Buddhist texts, the word is nibbana; in both languages it means "extinction" (like a lamp or flame) or "cessation." It refers to the extinction of greed, ill will, and delusion in the mind, the three poisons that perpetuate suffering. Nirvana is what the Buddha achieved on the night of his enlightenment: he became completely free from the three poisons. Everything he taught for the rest of his life was aimed at helping others to arrive at that same freedom.

As Fukuchi mentions in the panel above, there are six different realms of existence. These realms represent every possible state of existence, but one cannot live in a specific realm forever. Depending on whether or not one's past actions were morally good or bad, an individual is born into one of these realms. Basically, the controlling factor of which realm a person is born into is dependent on their respective karma. The realms are separated into two categories: the hellish ones and the heavenly ones.

The Deva Realm: where beings are rewarded for the good deeds they have done. This realm is void of anything unpleasant. It is basically paradise— empty of unfulfilled desires, any form of suffering, and fears of every kind. Religious individuals, however, do not seek to be born into this realm since its attitude is more or less carefree.

The Asura Realm: where demigods are admitted. Asuras are driven by greed and envy, and may come in conflict with human beings since they are quite similar. They are powerful beings, but quarrel with each other quite a bit, making this realm quite undesirable to be reborn into.

The Animal Realm: where beings are given the form of an animal (you probably guessed that lol). Individuals here don't actually have good karma to take pride in, but rather, they are born into this realm to work off their bad karma (by being slaughtered, hunted, or forced to work, etc). Being born into this realm forces one to atone for their past sins by living out their life as an animal.

The Hell Realm: where one is punished for their evil actions. The most merciless of realms, where one pays for their transgressions through pure suffering, methods of which include: dismemberment, starvation, and psychological/physical torture. However, once a person's term is fulfilled in this realm, they are presumably promised to be reborn into a higher state.

The Preta Realm: similar to the hell realm, in which beings pay for their past sins (specifically: greed and stinginess) by having to survive through hunger and thirst. This realm is also known as the 'ghost realm,' because some pretas are psychologically tortured by being forced to live in places their past selves have lived in. They are invisible to human beings living at that time, which pushes them to face the depths of despair and loneliness. Your typical horror movie, really.

The Human Realm: the only realm where one's actions determine their future. The status (social ranking, physical wellbeing, and so on) of a human being in this realm is determined by their past actions, but due to the fact that a person has their own conscience to differentiate good morals from bad, the actions they commit in this realm have the power to determine which realm they are sent to next.

Okay, so now that I've got that out of the way, let's shift our focus to the Book. Very little is known about the Book, but the basic fundamentals of how it works is that whatever is written in the book will come into existence only if its contents follow the rules of karma. In addition to that, only a few sentences can be written into a single page of the Book, and it must follow the current narrative of the story.

If I'm not wrong, the first time the Book was mentioned was by Fitzgerald, who wanted it to resurrect his deceased daughter in hopes of restoring his wife's mental health. The next time the Book is brought up is when Fyodor's intentions to possess it are divulged; his goal was to decimate the global population of ability-users. And now, the current arc has the Book as its central focus, with a single page in Fukuchi's possession.

The Book acts as the central point of multiverses, with each character's lives differing from universe to universe.

Dazai committing suicide in this alternate universe stands in sharp contrast with how he decided to start up a new life in the main universe.

Oda staying alive to act as a mentor to Akutagawa in the ADA differs from how Oda uses his death to prompt Dazai to "be on the side that saves people."

And of course, the way Atsushi and Akutagawa have their positions switched in the two universes depicts how different their lives would be if they were given the chance to be mentored by different people— these are just a few examples of how the Book houses an endless amount of possibilities.

Hypothetically speaking, this kind of reminds me of the differing realms I mentioned before, where suffering is promised in some realms, and better things are granted in the rest, depending on one's karma, or the deeds they've done in their past lives. In this scenario, perhaps one's past life can be understood as one's current life in a different universe. That's just a personal opinion though. Take it as you will.

side note: Keep in mind that the person who is more or less impervious to the Book's effect is Dazai, with his nullification ability. I wouldn't want to propose any theories in this aspect (I don't believe I'm fully fact-checked ;_;), but I could use Dazai as a raw example of how your choices affect your future. If Dazai had decided to stay in the Port Mafia after Oda's death, or if he even decided to go through with his suicidal fixations, life would've been different for him in the root universe (obviously, ryley) I mean, you could basically understand that from how he ended up in the BEAST au, but imagine if he really did slip up in his decision-making in any of the universes.

Many analysts have proposed that he went MIA (early in his life) from the main universe for a while to figure out how the BEAST universe worked, whilst having the Book to his advantage. Perhaps his actions were guided? I'm not saying he's all-knowing, but he's sure as hell smart. I'm not sure if Kafka was trying to highlight the concept of karma when it comes to Dazai, but if he is, then I suppose you could say that Dazai is pretty much unaffected by the rules of karma, existing as the centerpiece of all the multiverses. No Longer Human is the namesake of his ability, but the book talks about disqualification from societal norms and generally, the world. I was talking about it with a friend, and they reminded me that Yozo (the main protagonist) was pretty strong in his views against society. Like he didn't speak out of total defeat, he spoke out of defense. If there was anything Dazai actually lost to, it was his guilt— "Living itself is a source of sin."

Then again, that's my personal interpretation since everyone has their unique perspective of his writings. In terms of the actual adaptation, you could translate the word 'disqualification' to 'insusceptibilty' when if it came to the Book's effects on Dazai? This side note is becoming really long lmao anyways I'll link a few theories which afflicted me with brainrot down below.

Another thing before I wrap up, the name 'Decay of Angels' stemmed from Yukio Mishima's book entitled 'The Decay of An Angel.' This is the final novel to the author's tetralogy: 'The Sea of Fertility.' The main protagonist, Honda, meets a person he believes to be a reincarnation of his friend, Kiyoaki, who takes the form of a young teenage boy named Tōru. The last novel of this series enhances Mishima's dominant themes of the series as a whole:

the decay of courtly tradition in Japan

the essence and value of Buddhist philosophy and aesthetics

Mishima’s apocalyptic vision of the modern era

Again, this could be referred to what Fukuchi goes on to say:

Some people view the concept of samsara optimistically, justifying it by saying that perhaps each individual is given a second (third, fourth, fifth, who knows) chance to refine their actions in order to be birthed into a better realm, with their karma being the independent variable.

On the other hand, other people, specifically the Hindus, view the cycle of existence as some sort of plague. To them, the flow of life and being forced to endure the suffering of mere existence in any form was somewhat frowned down upon. Some Hindus viewed samsara as a trap. Besides, having one's soul being limited to a physical body for the rest of eternity was not very appealing, especially since where they ended up at depended on the karmic value their past actions surmounted.

Even so, particular types of Buddhists don't seek nirvana, but instead, like the Hindus, they make an effort to be good people of society, building up their good deeds to increase the likelihood of being reborn into one of the better realms.

As mentioned before, the Deva Realm was the home of angels, the most carefree, gratified beings to exist. Fukuchi describes these angels as the people who don't get their hands dirty, the people who act as the puppeteers of society: politicians.

In terms of parallels, angels were the most fortunate and powerful, but they didn't have anyone ruling over them. A lack of supervision would lead to the abuse of power, which is what I believe Fukuchi was referring to. Deeming himself the Decay of Angels, he sought to prove himself as the 'sign of death that falls on the nation's greed.'

A few fun facts (okay, not really) about Yukio Mishima: he committed seppuku (ritual suicide by disembowelment) on the day he held a speech to voice out his unpopular political beliefs to the public. Mishima deeply treasured traditions and opposed the modern mindset the nation was advancing forward to adapt eventually. In his last book, The Decay of an Angel, he spoke about the five signs which complete the death of an angel:

Here are the five greater signs: the once-immaculate robes are soiled, the flowers in the flowery crown fade and fall, sweat pours from the armpits, a fetid stench envelops the body, the angel is no longer happy in its proper place.

The reviews about this series I've read so far describe Mishima's works to be quite complex; his writings demanded a lot of time to deconstruct and understand. They were highly symbolic, and he was pretty obsessed with death and the 'spiritual barrenness of the modern world.' I think you could attach a few strings from here to the mindsets of the DOA members. Of course, this parallel is completely abstract, but I'll go on rambling anyway:

He should have armed them with the foreknowledge that would keep them from flinging themselves after their destinies, take away their wings, keep them from soaring, make them march in step with the crowd. The world does not approve of flying. Wings are dangerous weapons. They invite self-destruction before they can be used. If he had brought Isao to terms with the fools, then he could have pretended that he knew nothing of wings.

I suppose you could resonate Nikolai with that excerpt. As much as Fukuchi takes the lead in this whole murder association, I'd like to believe that each member of the DOA plays an equally interesting part in whatever movement they're trying to execute. Fyodor feels it is his god-sent purpose to cleanse the world of its sins, his motto being, "Let the hand of God guide you." Sigma doesn't know where he belongs, since his origination comes from a page in the Book, and is fueled by the desperation to find a reason to live. Bram holds one of the most powerful abilities which is counted to be one of the "Top Ten Calamities to Destroy the World."

What I mean to say is that the DOA members are incredibly powerful, and they're not your ordinary antagonists (or I'm just biased). It's not just overthrowing authorities, mass genocide, and world domination— you could say that each individual is trying to utilize their purposes to their fullest expenditures, and the way they're trying to assert their plan into action is a little more passive-aggressive (framing the Agency, having a convo with a suicidal dude in jail, etc). They're the gray area between evil and good. As they framed the good guys for their own crimes, they're trying to conquer the bad guys for exploiting the innocent as they please.

This post would definitely age well if all hell breaks loose in the current arc (as if it didn't) and Kafka doesn't give us a happy ending.

it’s ancient greek! it means homecoming, the idea of a triumphant return home for the hero after a long journey. i found it through looking at the root of nostalgia. in this fic of course it’s kind of a grim tongue in cheek play on it. the reader’s coming back to the mountains, but she’s running away after a bad breakup, and the welcome she gets is... shall we say less than ideal haha

ty nonnie!! i didn’t have the right space for it, but after kohsuke was ripped apart and eaten kuroo stayed by the reader’s side until late in the night, only disappearing when he heard the reader’s parents/search party approaching. they found her lying in pools of blood (and scattered half eaten body parts), shaking and unresponsive – they knew no animal could’ve done something like that. so they knew something lurked in those woods, but considering the reader had repressed the memories, her mom couldn’t just come out and say it <33

Uhh...I find it quite difficult to come up with a lot of different active scenarios or stories but I do frequently like to discuss what ifs between my characters and whoever I’m talking to and that often can evolve into an idea for a thread which I am all for taking places. I wouldn’t necessarily call it plotting because it doesn’t always have to turn into something, but its just fun little banter about our characters and their reactions. If I am trying to buckle down and plot I will do my best to contribute to whatever we’re trying to plan?

WHEN A PARTNER DROPS THE THREAD, DO YOU WISH TO KNOW?: YES / NO / DEPENDS. - And why?: I won’t be mad, just be like ‘hey can we drop this?’ and I’ll be like “cool”. No, but If I have concerns or questions about a thread or something we’re doing I am 100% going to talk to them about it to make sure nothing gets misconstrued. I get people get anxious but like...if you have the balls to write a character on the internet with a stranger you can send them an IM if you have a questions/concerns. None of us are mind readers, so don’t leave your partner in the dark about your thoughts and feelings. Obviously if they are writing with you they don’t hate you. 90% of us don’t bite and are just lame nerds behind a computer screen, so....

ARE YOU OKAY WITH ABSOLUTE HONESTY, EVEN IF IT MAY MEANS HEARING SOMETHING NEGATIVE ABOUT YOU AND/OR PORTRAYAL?: I mean, I’m not going to LOVE hearing something negative but if its a valid point or concern I’m absolutely going to listen to it and try to rectify it? Problem is a lot of people thinly spew hate or baseless negativity and then thinly veil it as “criticism” that stems their personal feelings about a character than it really is anything constructive, which is a no go for me. Will I 100% always agree with how everyone else plays their characters? No, but if its not hurting anyone and they’re having fun I’m not going to say anything to them. I 100% welcome constructive criticism or tough questions! It’s one way to improve.

DO YOU THINK YOU CAN HANDLE SUCH SITUATION IN A MATURE WAY? YES / NO.

WHY DO YOU RP AGAIN, IS THERE A GOAL?: My goal is really just to have fun and enjoy myself. The longer I am here the less I am worried about doing big deep threads or having amazing fancy graphics for that RPC clout. I’m here to have fun with my friends and play my OC that I love. Again, I don’t profess myself to be much of a writer so I’m not technically here to really further and deepen my writing skills. That sounds bad, I don’t mean to say I am adverse to improvement and I am always looking for ways or feedback that could make my storytelling better, but it is not my main goal or reason for why I rp, if that makes sense. Telling a narrative has always been something that’s been difficult for me (I HATED having to write stories in school and avoided creative writing like the plague) but I really welcome ways that could help me be better, because it hasn’t always been something natural to me.

WISHLIST, BE IT PLOTS OR SCENARIOS: I YEARN for a good thread with a Shunsui about Miki taking over the 8th division and how she changes it since his time there. She really worries about still holding onto his legacy while also making a name for herself and differentiating herself from him and how he ran things and would really want his feedback and approval. I would also really love if there were some characters that really took an interest in the kinds of stuff she does with the things she grows in her garden and greenhouse. It is more than just “ooh, look at the pretty flowers” and it is not really something I’ve gotten to explore despite my time here.

THEMES I WON’T EVER RP / EXPLORE: Anything gross. Rape/noncon/underage/furry or weird extreme fetish shit. I 100% do not vibe with racism, transphobia, homophobia, etc. I do not mind some darker themes but I don’t really have any interest on writing any threads where Miki is deeply deeply hurt or tortured or anything like that, which kind of falls under the gore category. Will I write her injured and do I welcome some kinds of sparring/fighting threads? Yes. But I won’t subject her to gross violence and having the shit being beat out of her. Miki is not infallible but I don’t want to write it.

WHAT TYPE OF STARTERS DO YOU PREFER / DISLIKE, CAN’T WORK WITH?: Starters that are too open ended, start with a general with a question and/or little scenario building. You know like the “why are you here”, “what are you doing”, “who are you” sorts of starters. They’re boring and I will most likely run out of ways to keep going with them. Set a scene for me and I will have a much easier time!

WHAT TYPE OF CHARACTERS CATCH YOUR INTEREST THE MOST?: That’s a good question...Miki tends to like friendly people (obviously) but also gets a kick out of interacting with cold or difficult to talk to characters (think Soi fon, Kensei, Byakuya etc) because she sees it as something of a challenge. She wants to see if she can befriend them. I also like characters that have an interesting theme or shitck .

WHAT TYPE OF CHARACTERS CATCH YOUR INTEREST THE LEAST?: Characters that are not really in her age group (think the karakura kids). I have the most difficult time thinking about how they might even interact in a way that is not on the most superficial level. Also characters that I can’t realistically see her meeting or running into.

WHAT ARE YOUR STRONG ASPECTS AS RP PARTNER?: I am pretty easy to reach OOC, and once I’m in I’m in. I love talking about our characters interactions and will spam you with asks and shit if that’s what you want. I will talk all day about our characters if you let me. I will send you stupid memes. Even if I am not posting on tumblr I’m easily reached through discord. And Idk my oc is good??? maybe???

WHAT ARE YOUR WEAK ASPECTS AS RP PARTNER?: I would say I’m inconsistent? I know its covid times right now but I do work a full time job that takes a lot of my time and energy usually and I absolutely can’t write when I’m mentally exhausted. It won’t happen. So there may be times where you just won’t see any posting from me and it may take a long time for me to answer a thread or ask. As much as I also don’t like to label myself this way...I guess I technically do suffer from chronic pain (I have a hip malformation), and sitting is one of the things that really can exacerbate my hip and back pain meaning sometimes I just can’t tolerate sitting at my desk for very long or even sitting up in my bed which really prevents me from writing sometimes even when I want to. I wish mobile draft writing was better lol

And I also don’t rp smut with just anyone, there has to be an established relationship between the characters. But if it flows with the story and it makes sense for the scenario then yeah, I’m down for a good smut thread.

- ANYTHING YOU WOULD NOT WANT TO RP THERE?: I’m pretty vanilla and I didn’t really give Miki anything that’s really nonstandard. I’m not going to shame anyone for what they’re into or their characters but there’s just kinks I couldn’t convincing write, would be ooc, or I just would be too embarrassed. So far I have not run into anything weird though.

- WHAT COULD POSSIBLY MAKE YOUR MUSE INTERESTING TOWARDS OTHERS, WHY SHOULD THEY RP WITH THIS PARTICULAR CHARACTER OF YOURS NOW, WHAT POSSIBLE PLOTS DO THEY OFFER?: Miki is unique, I’d like to think. She is a blend of soft and gentle, but also stubborn, opinionated and desperate to prove that she shouldn’t be messed with. I basically wanted a character that just seemed like a living and breathing springtime breeze. I’m not saying necessarily that some of the tropes she holds are entirely unique to the series, but I think its the blend of all her aspects that make her different compared to other canon characters. Plus if you love that plant and flower aesthetique™ you have come to the right place. Plus she takes it further than just an aesthetic or a surface level “I like flowers” aspect of her personality. It runs so deep and she is so passionate about it in so many different ways.

- WITH WHAT TYPE OF MUSES DO YOU USUALLY STRUGGLE TO RP WITH?: Again, ones that I can’t find much of a commonality with so those who are not her age or are strictly human. Though it is not impossible to interact with humans, I prefer to develop her story within the scene of the Seireitei. Also characters that are super volatile and aggressive.

- WHAT DO THEY DESIRE, IS THEIR GOAL?: Peace, accomplishment, happiness mostly. Miki wants to be recognized for her hard work as well as desires to form positive relationships with others. She wants the Gotei to feel less disjointed.

- WHAT CATCHES THEIR INTEREST FIRST WHEN MEETING SOMEONE NEW?: The way they talk, their facial expressions, their eyes.

- WHAT DO THEY VALUE IN A PERSON?: Kindness, determination, drive, sense of humor.

- WHAT THEMES DO THEY LIKE TALKING ABOUT?: Plants, flowers, flower arranging, gardening, poisonous plants and their potential affects and uses, tea, shitty jokes, food, general day to day gossip, handsome men (lol), books, kido and other shinigami arts, human world stuff.

answered here! not as far as i remember! which i guess isn’t very far since i’ve forgotten a many number of things sfjgkhs but there was a point where i was in a “band” with my brother and my childhood friend. i use that term loosely bc we were all kids and had no idea what we were doing and no musical talent. but i had an actual drum set and i was the drummer of our band. i literally didn’t do anywhere near good i would just bang on it every now and again bc rhythm?? genuine musical passion?? don’t know her

it would be an apartment bc i refuse to live a house. i’m way too paranoid for that fgjkshg i just don’t feel safe anywhere except an apartment bc there’s safety in numbers and if something awful were to happen there’s people right across the hall who can help immediately. ofc neighbors in a neighborhood can help too but in a case where if someone breaks in all of us would be aware of it and can help, call the police, etc.

we’ve had multiple break ins here so the paranoia definitely stems from that too but also i’ve just watched too many horror/home invasion movies to feel safe in a big house lol

ANYWAY i would just like something of a decent size that’s cozy. i don’t want a really big place and i’d like to have the freedom to make it feel like home. i’d want to put up posters and that kind of stuff. i’m not picky man i just want to feel comfortable 💕

What were your first impressions of each other?'best friends' are so arbitrary. but michelle and i had the same training class at work and she thought i was intimidating lmao i thought she was odd but then realized she was actually cool. we're kind of inseparable now. i want to say my partner is my best friend as well, aside from being my gf we rly do have a close bond and i like talking to her and sharing things with her. of course both of those relationships are different dynamics, but i tell her everything, even shit that i know she's not interested in but she'll enjoy listening bc i am lmao and vice versa, and i wouldn't want it any other way

bonfire - describe your dream house.two-story w maybe three bedrooms (i guess 4 if i magically end up having 2 kids). i would like "den" so to speak as an office/library space. i prefer open layouts with a lot of natural light available. enough greenlife in a balcony upstairs, the backyard has nice landscaping and a huge deck. whole thing is fenced in, white picket type thing so my neighbors ain't sneaking. it would be nice if it looked over a lake of some sort. i have a nice vision in my mind that i know i can't put into words. ideally we'll build a lot of it ourselves. the master suite would be NICEEE w french doors leading out to the balcony as well. bathroom has both, a nice porcelain tub and a two-headed shower (in this fantasy we can afford that kinda sewage bill). floors are hardwood all around, and matching marble countertops in the bathroom(s). the kitchen is a nice tile as well. cabinets are a pretty hard wood as well. alternative is a nife spacious open loft with everything mentioned, except the balcony is much bigger and access to a rooftop deck of our own. a loooot of glass, a lot of natural light over looking a huge city. in the perfect world i'd have that view of the space needle on one side and the mountain range on the other.

cinnamon - if you had to live in a time period different than the present, which would you choose and where?there are no previous time periods that are exactly good for women of color

cobweb - (if you’ve graduated) do you miss high school?fuck no. but i would still want to redo it better. the only thing i miss i not having to pay bills but.. everything else i dealt with wasn't worth the tradeoff

I want to think of a scenario in which no one looses, an outcome that saves all of our naive hearts from ruin—but there isn’t a world where we survive unscathed. There are always causalities in a war of hearts and the trick is to be the one still beating by the end of it all.

“You and Sophie?”

Instantly, Abram’s cheeks turn red—but he refuses to break eye contact, “Me and Sophie nothing, we’re just friends.”

“Like you and I are just friends?”

“That’s different.”

I’m clutching my pen between tightly wound fingers, knuckles aching, “Is it really, though?”

Mrs. Pierce finally enters the room and I lean back, but Abram refuses to look forward, refuses to take his eyes away from me, “Completely different. And even if it wasn’t, Elise, at least Sophie isn’t afraid of what she wants—she goes after it. She doesn’t try and waste away to nothing just so she doesn’t have to deal with life.” His words are low, vicious and cut through skin. Any sharper and I would be choking back blood.

“Mrs. Pierce,” I raise my hand, “I’m not feeling very well. I’d like to go back to my room now.”

“You haven’t been in class all week Elise, do you think that’s a really good idea?”

“If you’d rather me waste away to nothing on your classroom floor, I’d be more than happy to. Otherwise I’d rather complete whatever assignments in my room.”

She rolls her eyes, releases her short hair from the tight confines of her bun and shakes her head, “Do whatever you want.”

I shove my books into my bag and slide my chair noisily across the floor—I move by Abram, not without bumping him with my hip on the way out.

Who is this?

Ellie. Can I call you? We need to do something about his situation.

How did you get my phone number? Abram doesn’t even have my phone number.

And what situation are you even talking about?

You do know I’m not his handler, right?

“You can’t really be that mad?” Jason asks. He’s given up completely on studying and has been nervously eating an entire sleeve of peanut butter cups. “Didn’t you ask Abram to take her out?”

“Yes,” I say, “But that doesn’t mean I wanted him to do it. I thought he would make up some excuse like he has twenty times before.”

Jason scoffs, “He’s probably just you know… pent up and needed to release some aggression.” A large smile spreads across his face at the innuendo and I roll my eyes. Stomach churning at the thought of Abram doing anything with Sophie.

Not because I thought she was disgusting—the exact opposite. Sophie was gorgeous; she had legs for days and was effortlessly pretty. She was smart, in a scary way and was constantly underestimated—it made her resilient, a fighter, and more often than not, a winner.

I wanted to scream at Jason. I wanted to tear away all the pages from the book in my lap, but instead I dug my nails into my thigh, digging in further until the pain in my leg outweighed the pain in my chest and I only stopped when he leaned over and plucked my hand away from my body.

“Jesus Christ, Elise, you’re drawing blood. What is wrong with you?”

“Nothing is wrong with me. Why would you ask that?”

“You haven’t been acting like yourself lately—you haven’t been eating, is that why you were hospitalized? And anytime someone brings up Abram you go nuts.”

“I go nuts?”

“That’s not what I meant.”

I throw the book off my lap and stand up, “Maybe, but it’s what you said.”

Jason’s quick to stand too, walking toward me with outstretched arms. When I don’t move away he wraps them around me, “I’m sorry, that’s not what I meant. You just seem protective over him, that’s all.” His lips press to the crook of my neck and he breathes in deeply, “You care about him a lot?” Jason asks.

He pulls away and it takes everything in me not to cry, so I nod, teeth digging into my cheek. “He’s my best friend, Jason.”

“He’s like a brother to you.”

I don’t know if Jason says that to convince himself or me—but he brings my forehead to his lips and I don’t argue. He doesn’t try to convince me otherwise when I tell him I’m tired and that I’ll see him tomorrow.

When I’m alone, I fall onto my mattress, letting the ragged beat of my heart lull me into a calmer state where the knot in my lungs isn’t quite as big and I can breathe.

A knock at the door stirs me and I’m hoping to find Abram on the other side. I brush back my hair, fix my skirt and try to button up my shirt to maintain some modesty.

“Expecting someone else?” Sophie asks as I open the door.

My shoulders hunch and I use my body to keep her from coming in the room any further, “I’m getting ready for bed, Soph, what do you want?”

She held up three different sized condoms, “Abram and I are going to get coffee and I wanted to know which size is more accurate?”

I clench my jaw, so tight I’m surprised I don’t break teeth. “Abram isn’t like that.”

“We’ll see. I think I’m slowly starting to rip your claws out of him.” She sighs and shoves them back into her pocket, “Remember Elise, you can’t have your cake and throw it up, too.”

Cerise has always compared me to dying fruit. When other mothers thought rainbows shined out of their little girls’ asses, Cerise often reminded me that I was pretty on the outside—but when you bit in all you got was a mouthful of rot.

I couldn’t say I blamed her.

The pretty skin and long hair was only a mask and underneath was the true horror. I had spent hours scratching at the surface of my skin, trying to pull the monster out. Under my skin was red and raw and uninviting. Until all the pretty little freckles were dots of blood any tan lines were replaced with welts left by fingernails.

The last thing to go was my hair. I grabbed a pair of sheers from my desk and pulled my hair out of its ponytail.

Ugly little thing, I thought—relief warming my body. I held my hair and watched with jaded eyes as the sheers ripped through the meticulously cared after tresses. Years of expensive, imported shampoo was now sitting in my sink and the weight—literally was lifted.

I don’t stop cutting until my bob, jagged—but not half bad, was below my chin and when I can breathe I drop the scissors.

For a moment I don’t recognize the girl staring back at me—eyes wide and wild, ravenous with a hunger that couldn’t be satisfied with food.

The stares aren’t half as bad as I thought they would be. Some quiet whispers but mostly, two-faced compliments left people’s mouth.

I don’t feel so watched until lunch when we’ve all crowded the cafeteria and I’m sitting alone at a table, staring at the food on my tray—willing myself to eat.

Abram is the first to sit down, staring with his mouth agape.

Jason is next.

And finally Sophie who sits beside Abram. She grins, “Did you mean to cut it all short and choppy like that? I mean, really, Elise, there’s a Great Clips a mile away. Abram and I could’ve brought you last night.”

I glare back at her. Stabbing into my chicken and shoving it in my mouth to keep from snapping at her.

“I like it,” Jason announces. “I think it’s sexy, babe.” He leans over and kisses my cheek. Abram hasn’t said anything and I pull my sweater down to cover any angry skin from last night’s breakdown.

Jason asks Abram a question about hockey and Sophie’s conversation turns to her father—who she said is running for Congress in Georgia. I’m doing my best to nod without listening when my phone buzzes on the table.

Jason’s phone pings next, and then Abram’s—soon the entire cafeteria is filled with different text tones. At different times, thumbs click the recording delivered by text and moaning stuns everyone silent.

“We shouldn’t be doing this.”

A very distinct, very Abram’s voice says and all of our eyes are cast on him.

The moaning that follows makes me wish I had successfully crawled out of my skin the night prior. I would know that second voice anywhere, it’s mine.

I look up at Abram who stares back at me in horror, face red. But when the recording ends, he’s rewarded with a few slaps on the back from guys and girls talking behind their hands, eyeing him like a piece of meat.

“Dude!” Jason shouts, “Who was that? She sounded so familiar.”

Abram and I are still staring at each other and my hand was holding the plastic fork so tight it snapped.
