I finally got around to playing the Nova Covert Ops missions in Starcraft 2. I had bought them way, way back but never actually played it.
I got reminded of the way Terran missions love the concept of "stay in one spot and HOLD it" which tickled my nostalgia a bit. Same with the difficulty.
I kinda wished there was more actual sneaking around as Nova, or waging asymmetrical warfare while AI allies control a large army.
I had fun.

Are you good? Yeah. Yeah, we got you covered out here. Wherever you go, we go. Well, that's comforting, but I meant, like, are you good? Do you mean do I miss you already? No. I'm fine. You are such a jerk.
| ANATOMY OF A SCENE - CHENFORD EDITION 5.21 - Going Under
Covering Lucy's first days undercover through her conversations with Tim is simply brilliant. Instead of focusing on the isolating side of covert operations, this montage actually emphasises how these two find ways to stay in touch… to hold space for the other, through phone calls that sound like love letters, that serve as a bond between them… And that's the beauty of this scene : it underlines the importance of verbal communication. They can't rely on their usual shorthand here. They can't just guess what the other is thinking with only a look. They have to say things aloud. And that constant dialogue brings out so many things to the surface.
Like how truly different their relationship is. From Tim and Isabel's marriage, that was plagued by miscommunication and secrecy as her recent return pointed out. Or from Sava and Jake's relationship, that was based on lies and deceit. Both Lucy and Tim make a point to constantly check-in with each other here. Right from the start, she asks him point blank how he is doing, recognising his deflection. His little smile when she asks him that… The fondness behind it… His little joke about not missing her and Lucy calling him a jerk… This is so reminiscent of their usual dynamic and they both need this semblance of normalcy. But mostly, it shows how they really pay attention to the other. They make the most of their limited time, discussing the mission as well as personal matters. Like when Lucy asks him to keep an eye on Tamara or to wait for her return to watch Top Chef… Or when she wonders if he ever wishes he had a normal job, one where he wouldn't get shot - talk about foreshadowing by the way… Those are the type of conversations they would normally have. Being undercover doesn't change that : they might be separated by this op, but they're not shutting out the other either. Those little conversations that may seem insignificant are their way of staying connected to each other. The contrast with the previous montage of Lucy sending short text messages to Nyla when she was undercover as Nova couldn't make this clearer.
That's why having Tim as her link to the 'real world' is perfect. It may not be Lucy's first undercover op but it is the first time since they started dating. Tim acting as her case officer gives them both a bit of a preview to what their future might entail, while easing them both to it. It's a way for him to be directly involved in Lucy's op. Besides, no one knows her better than him and she trusts him more than anybody else. And it also provides her with a lifeline, an anchor, the comfort of knowing he's close by. But mostly, this is what forces them to address the elephant in the room. They are both aware of the potential conflict undercover work could create, something that Lucy tried to bring up a couple of times already. But they need to go through one mission to fully grasp how important transparency is - especially Tim. The fact that this op happens right after the return of their doppelgängers and Isabel gives them the opportunity to learn from their errors… to learn from the past. It was important that these two got to fully enjoy their honeymoon period, to solidify their relationship first. So that instead of worrying on how it could tear them apart, they can concentrate on how they can make it work : by communicating, by being transparent with each other. That's the ingredient that was missing in the other relationships. And this scene introduces wonderfully that last act, when they finally voice their fears and feelings. They spent the whole mission finding ways to stay in touch, to communicate with each other and that allows them to finally confront the issue.

So excited I got @crownedinmarigolds into something Sci-fi and it's Star Trek! We watched a season and a half of Voyager and switched to Deep space 9. Of course we immediately came up with a ship that has all of our OCs on it as Starfleet officers. It's also got me inspired to write about it so here is a lil tid bit of what I've been working on. They are aboard the USS Antumbra, a Nova class ship under the command of Captain Carver Delroux. Their mission is to handle the dirty work of Starfleet. Benevolence can only go so far in a galaxy full of warlords and tyrants. They operate off book although they are more of a penal ship and menagerie of misfits rather than strictly covert ops. Sometimes the crimes of the few can be good for the many.
Todays episode is Holodeck Happenings ~below the break~
Tumblr media
The warm briney breeze blew through their hair as the cool waves lapped at their feet. The hot sand shifted under them in their crescendoing passion. Nythanel’s hand ran through the coarse hair on Sydney’s chest, while Sydney’s hand gripped the back of Nythanel’s neck. Their minds opened to each other and their desires guided their bodies. It was bliss, ecstasy, excitement. It was a moment long waited for. A perfect scene crafted for them to enjoy each other. Nythanel tugged at the waistband of Sydney’s swimming trunks when their empathic bond was suddenly broken by the sound of someone clearing their throat. They looked at the source of the noise to see the human bartender holding a phaser in his hand, aiming it directly at them.
“Fuck, Sydney!” Nythanel said, pushing himself off of his lover. “I get this enough on away missions, can we not?”
Sydney didn't have to be an empath to know Nythanel was frustrated, but being a Betazoid he felt a hot angry wave radiating off his half Klingon half Romulan lover.
“I didn't program this in.” Sydney said, rolling onto his side. “Computer, remove the bartender and any other hostile elements.”
There was a heavy pause with only the sounds of the waves brushing the beach.
“Nice try, but your tricks don't work on me.” The bartender said.
“Did someone come in?” Nythanel asked, looking back at Sydney.
“No, I'm not picking up on thoughts or feelings-” A phaser shot from the bartender cut Sydney off and reduced his coconut drink to a smolder. He was stunned, unsure and inexperienced in dangerous situations. Being the ship's counselor usually kept him out of these sorts of messes.
“Enough talking. I am part of the United Union Consortium. You two StarFleet officers will be-.”
Nythanel cut him off with a loud guttural yell, throwing a cloud of sand into the man's eyes, causing him to reel back and shoot off a wide shot from his phaser. Nythanel leapt up from the ground and tackled the man. With one double fisted pummel the man was unconscious.
“Just what I needed on my day off.” Nythanel grumbled as he picked up the phaser.
Sydney stood up next to him. “Computer, end holodeck program.” He was met with silence. “It's still not responding. Do you think safety protocols have been disengaged?”
“I have no idea. I think I know a way to test it.” Nythanel replied as he began looking around on the beach.
He found a shell and broke it in half, then dragged the sharp side across his forearm. Green blood welled up from the small cut.
“Yep, no safety protocol.” He said before licking the wound clean.
“What do we do? Surely there has to be some kind of override.” Sydney said, a low panic in his voice.
“This ship is crewed by people that don't exactly adhere to regulations. I doubt there is one. If we're lucky that was the only glitch and Lieutenant Lyubov will shut it down once our time is up.” Nythanel said.
“ Well, that’s an hour and I can think of worse places to be trapped with you.” Sydney said with a smirk, feeling more confident as he stepped close to Nythanel.
That confidence quickly faded as the beach suddenly disappeared, and they found themselves in the middle of an arena with a chanting and roaring crowd. Large braziers with bright flames lit the room. A bat'leth replaced the phaser in Nythanel’s hand. Banners displaying the symbol of the Klingon empire unfurled. At the far end of the arena entered two Klingons, armed with their dreadful blades.
“You take the one on the left, I'll distract the one on the right?” Sydney said uneasily as he awkwardly held up his own bat'leth
“Damnit Sydney…” Nythanel said under his breath as he prepared to fight. ~~To be continued???~~

20 for the writing meme, please!
Thanks for asking! You picked a doozy, lol. (Ask me questions about my writing)
20. Tell us the meta about your writing that you really want to ramble to people about (symbolism you’ve included, character or relationship development that you love, hidden references, callbacks or clues for future scenes?)
All right, here's some meta for chapter 2 of Nova, Baby (why chapter 2? Because it's an entire 5+1 inside a single chapter of a multichap fic, which is meta enough reason to choose it).
So yeah, it's a 5+1! I thought this was very clever, lol. Also a little bonkers, but there you go. I love this chapter because it really is a huge arc in Alex and Henry's relationship development, plus I got to play with these little encapsulated moments, and some other characters got to come in too (Nora, Pez). I'll give you some "behind the story" and lists of references for each section!
Below will be spoilers for the entire fic, so be forewarned.
I. My excuse for food-as-a-metaphor-for-love. I love that canonically Alex is a good cook, and this was my excuse to have them indulge when normally you might not get much of that in spy fiction (although, this is also a bit of a reference to my other fandom, The Man from UNCLE, where one of the spies is also a good cook; fancy dishes at safehouses is kind of my jam). I chose molé as a dish because making a traditional one has so many ingredients, to really drive home Alex putting a lot of effort into his relationship with Henry.
II. I had such fun writing this one so that, even though it's from Alex's POV, the reader doesn't know he's wearing a vest until Henry does. He might not have been risking his life (much), but he was definitely risking some broken ribs. This one has a bunch of little references in it, mostly to other spy media:
jumping through a fifth story window into a swimming pool—this is a Burn Notice reference. Throw a mattress into the pool first. Also I just love the idea of Alex being a little Extra when it comes to being a spy.
three guys who look like they walked off a Guy Ritchie set—TMFU is a Guy Ritchie movie, plus I love his movies in general.
Alex hadn’t gotten any confirmation from Langley that MI6 would be a part of this op, Henry had just shown up and Alex hadn’t really questioned it—Meant to sow a tiny thread of doubt in Alex's mind, which would pay off later when the fake burn file comes through.
he notices the way Henry’s eyelashes are wet and clumping together and his eyes are rimmed in red—Henry fucking lost it here. See also the part where he kills the men rather than his usual incapacitating, nonlethal shots. This is probably the point where he realizes how deep he's in.
Turns out, they don’t argue about what to do with it. They destroy the hard drive—direct TMFU reference, (spoilers for that movie), this is what Illya and Napoleon do at the end with the missile plans.
III. The classic Nora-and-Alex-have-a-conversation-about-his-bisexuality scene. Also I just loved the idea of Alex being so oblivious to his bisexuality that he's actually sucked cock before and written it off because 'that's just what spies do'. The layout of desks/offices in this fic roughly comes from the show Covert Affairs, since it's one of the few I've watched that actually regularly shows CIA interiors.
IV. Behind the story peek: Henry bails on this mission because he's concerned, after Lisbon, that he's getting in too deep. Also this scene Alex being a Henry-sexual (not interested in going home with any other people in the bar but can't figure out why), which I love. Also Pez in a poncho, because he would. Pez and Alex have an absolute blast on their mission, and Pez gives Henry no end of shit about Alex when he gets back.
V. Tender wound-tending my beloved. This was such a moment of honesty for them. I mean, not completely honest, but I think this is the first time Alex really realizes just how much Henry cares about him (save the full romantic feelings). There is, of course, a massive callback to this scene near the end of the fic where Alex tells Henry that he can't die because promised he'd always take care of him. All that time, he's carried that in his memory. So yeah, this is a pivotal moment.
+1. Ah, the kiss moment. I always love a kiss-as-a-cover trope, and it made for a good first kiss in this one where it would be easier to write off the potential for feelings, since it was all for the mission. Lots of canon references in this one:
in another life, he would have made a great politician—obvious reference is obvious.
I suppose I could, I don’t know, fall into the dessert table or something—a refence to Cakegate of course.
Christ, you’re thick sometimesI changed the quote because I wanted it to be a bit less severe than "as thick as it gets." Alex is only thick sometimes in this universe, lol.
Henry’s back hits the wall next to some kind of small, indoor tree—always kissing under a tree, these two.
public displays of affection can be strategically useful for diverting scrutiny away from yourself—yes, this a CA: TWS reference
ALL RIGHT, that's probably enough lmaooooo. You asked me to ramble and I rambled. I hope this was interesting to at least one person.

I got my Curt and Owen X-Com rookies bonded and ranked up to Sergeants, so they finally got their randomly assigned call signs
Curt is "Nova," which is cute. And I put him in armor that has a rocket launcher on his wrist, so I think he'd have fun with that. Owen is "Crash," which is fuckin rude. I mean he did explode to death on his first mission out (it wasn't Curt!) but I'm not too proud to save scum so that shouldn't count against him. Anyways now I have him in a stasis vest so he can regenerate health during encounters
I always get super attached to my soldiers anyways, but it is funny how much more invested I am in keeping these guys alive and seeing them do well. I had Curt blow up a bunch of aliens (and half a building) with his rocket launcher like "good for you, buddy!" Owen stayed in concealment and got right up behind an enemy and took him out in one shot, and it was like "that's my guyyy!!" I'm having fun with it
Currently bonding Tatiana and Barb as teammates through covert ops (I'm playing War of the Chosen) before I start leveling them

So, we know Sito Jaxa was in Starfleet Academy in 2368. Mariner was her classmate, but not neccessarily in the same year. Lower Decks starts in 2380, 12 years later. We know Mariner served in the Dominion War, 2373-2375. The episode Lower Decks (and Sito Jaxa's Death) takes place in 2370, at which point Sito Jaxa has graduated the academy and been assigned to the Enterprise. So, lets say Mariner, Fleet Brat that she is, joined the academy at 18. Memory Alpha says that the academy traditionally lasts 4 years, but can take 6 or 8 years for specialized courses. A Ship's Doctor, for example, needs to do a full course of "How to be a Starfleet Officer", plus "Be a Doctor for all Federation Member Species" plus "Be a Xenobiologist". Mariner is Command division, so probably a 4 year course, most of your specialist knowledge is best gained aboard ship after all. To make Mariner as young as possible, we'll say she turned 19 in 2368, and looks up to the members of Nova Squadron until the incident outlined in The First Duty. She graduates at the age of 22, in 2372. Probably quite young, but she's a Starfleet Brat with her dad en-route to the Admiralty in addition to being extremely capable. This means she's probably less than a year into her first posting when The Dominion War hits. Sito died on a covert mission, Starfleet probably didn't publish her death for some time, so Mariner may not have learned she died until after she left the Academy. Barely has time to process that her friend has been dead for two years when she's thrust into the Dominion War and gets recruited for grey-ops work alongside Klingons. She's about 25 when the dominion war ends in '75. At this point, Bradward Boimler is also 25 himself, gets sick of working the Family Vineyard in California, and gets swept up in the post Dominion War recruiting effort to replenish Starfleet's ranks. He's very much a scientist/explorer type, NOT a soldier, so I think it's unlikely he would have joined during the war. He starts attending the Academy. meanwhile, Mariner spends 4 years bouncing between postings not processing her trauma and getting repeatedly promoted and demoted. Both end up on the Cerritos in '79, Boimler's first posting out of the Academy, both are Ensigns.
Lower Decks Headcanon
Boimler is the Baby of the Warp Core Four.
In the latest episode, we learned that Mariner was a classmate of Sito Jaxa's, meaning she was in the academy during TNG. From the numbers I've seen going around, this means she graduated over a decade ago. Rutherford was implied to be in the academy when he got injured and had his implant put in. In his flashback, Les Buenamigo looked like this
Tumblr media
While in the current time, he looks like This
Tumblr media
So Rutherford must have been an active duty engineer for some time. Tendi is a fresh Academy Graduate...but all indications are that she spent a good chunk of her adult life being her family's Prime before then. I don't know when Orion Assassins start their careers, but she's got quite the reputation. I find it unlikely that she jumped to the Academy right out of Orion High-school without spending the equivalent of her early 20s working as the Mistress of the Winter Constellations. So yeah, Boimler is a good deal younger and less experienced than the rest of them.

(709) I forgot about this one. Apparently Blizz abandoned any thought of doing these mission packs after they realized people like the CO-OP mode so much. Makes me sad because it was a nice little mini campaign and reminded me of the off shoot stories told in the StarCraft: Frontline manga comic things. I would have preferred more RPG missions where you just control Nova, but the different mission objectives did make the building missions more interesting than most of the main campaigns. Also, because it was a solely digital release this is legit the best picture I could find in a good resolution.

Tumblr media
I did mention that the Yakuza series has become my 3rd favorite, as the top 2 have nostalgia. And no, Pokemon is not among those two.
My top favorite franchise... the hints are scattered everywhere in my stories and on Tumblr. Though of course, you need to recognize those hints. The second favorite... well, it’s a lot more closely guarded.
I won’t reveal my second favorite franchise, because... let me keep some secrets. Hahaha.
My top favorite franchise of all time is... ... I did say that I was an RTS nut, right? I love real time strategy games. And what happens if you look up the most popular RTS game of all time?
Tumblr media
Yes. My top favorite franchise of all time is Starcraft. “Starcraft is such a Korean game”. ... Well, I am Korean. And it’s not my fault that foreigners, aka non-Koreans, just can’t match Koreans in Starcraft I. In SC II, it’s a lot more diverse, which is great. But I’ve seen the #1 foreigner in SC I take on a Korean champion, in a 7-game showmatch, and lost all 7 games in a straight up stomping. ... And I’ve also seen a Korean guy beat a Chinese guy using his foot for the keyboard. There’s a reason why there are never any foreigners in the ASL. They simply don’t make it through the qualifiers.
Starcraft 1 has been released in 1998. I did mention that the first games I’ve played were from 1998. And Starcraft 2 is from 2010. They’re both very old at this point. And still going on strong. I watch a Starcraft game every day, whether that’d be a pro match, or a world tournament match. Starcraft 1′s tournament, the ASL, is going very strong, delivering tons of amazing games. That game hadn’t had a balance update since like 2000, and the meta is still changing. ... Annoyingly, because I’m watching the AfreecaTV Star League (ASL), Youtube sometimes recommends me the top 25 American Sign Language (ASL) videos.
And I did mention in the “Get to Know Your Buddies” post, that the last series I’ve watched was GSL. Global Starcraft II League. Speaking of which...
Tumblr media
Round of 4 tomorrow. Definitely watching that. ... Not live, since GSL happens in Korea, thus Korean time. C’mon, herO! Win 2 seasons in a row! Don’t let Maru win for the 5th time! He’s going after the G5L trophy! Stop him!
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Anyways. So, what kind of hints did I litter everywhere? For one, specific references! I mention Starcraft units, upgrades, abilities, etc every now and then. In the Zelda game playthrough, Lonk finds a pair of boots? I mention the Zealot Charge upgrade from the Twilight Council (SC II), and the Leg Enhancements upgrade from the Citadel (of Adun) (SC 1). Of course, you need to know what that meant. So loose hints.
Next, Destiny. Destiny’s chapter titles are ALL mission titles from SC I and II campaign missions. I had to avoid the very specific titles, like “For Aiur!”, and there were a lot of those. SA being titled after Halo missions and sub-chapters was a lot easier.
Next, “the Legacy package”. The hell does that mean? If you look at Starcraft II’s expansions... the first one was Wings of Liberty (2010), then Heart of the Swarm (2013), and then Legacy of the Void (2015), and there’s the Nova Covert Ops (”Covert Ops”, you say?). The last three stories of mine are Eternal Legacy, For Her Heart, and The New Wings. SC II starts with “Wings”, “Heart”, and “Legacy”, in that order. My stories END with “Legacy”, “Heart”, and “Wings”, in that order. Of course, the SC II expansions are shorted to “Liberty”, “Swarm”, and “Void”, so that might have been hard to notice immediately.
Next, the Mew icon. What is that on its wrists? People have asked before and I never gave a straight answer.
Tumblr media
Starcraft’s Protoss Psi Blades. Most commonly seen on Protoss Zealots. Which is why I refer to it as zealot blades.
Tumblr media
Because everyone knows that the Protoss stuff is the coolest in Starcraft. Though game-wise, balance is an issue. But that’s a common RTS problem. How can Marines shoot down a Battlecruiser? In the lore, they don’t. In the games, if the Marines have +3 but the Battlecruisers don’t have armor upgrades, they melt to a decent sized ball of Marines.
And this is why that crossover story idea didn’t get anywhere. If a Protoss Mothership appears in orbit above a planet, it’s going to fire its purifier beam, and the planet will be incinerated. How do I write a story about a handful of PEOPLE while that’s happening? Though it would’ve been interesting to write having a single Protoss Zealot helping the main cast through a Zerg invasion, who then later get killed, and the Protoss armor warps away the occupant upon taking fatal damage. And the warrior then comes back inside a Dragoon shell to fight once more.
There’s a specific chapter in Destiny where... “I” appear. Lots of Protoss stuff there, starting with the ability Recall, Stasis, has Zealot Psi Blades, Charge boots, tinkering with a Vortex cannon, has a drone that seems awfully like a miniature Protoss Warp Prism, seems to have Observers scattered around for surveillance, etc.
And note how many times I used the words “warp”, “stasis”, and “recall” in my posts and stories. Whenever something is teleported, I say it’s been “warped away”, or “recalled”. If something’s locked down, it’s in stasis.
Look at the icon for the story that I don’t like talking about. What is Mew’s silhouette carrying? Looks like twin green reaper scythes.
Tumblr media
Protoss Dark Templar’s Warp Blades, that’s what. And since Dark Templar are cloaked and thus invisible... it fits how the silhouette is barely visible.
These are all Protoss stuff though! Starcraft has three races. Human Terrans, high-tech Protoss, and swarming Zerg. ... I’m a Protoss main in both SC I and II. But I do mention other races’ abilities from time to time.
In Destiny, I refer to “burrow charge” a lot. That is a Zerg Ultralisk ability that was scrapped given how stupidly powerful that was.
I do remember mentioning “stimpack” or “stims” from time to time. Terran ability. Marines take a quick stim to move and shoot faster somehow. ... I think stimmed Marines have the highest DPS in the game. So you just make Barracks, make Marines, and keep doing that to win. ... Until you run into splash damage like Protoss Colossus or Psionic Storm, Zerg Lurkers or Banelings... and then you complain about balance on the forums like all Terran players.
... Anyways. I think this post has gone on long enough. I think you get the idea. I can’t point out all the references I’ve made. This Tumblr was made in December 2013. I’ve been playing/watching Starcraft since 1998. It’s safe to say that this Tumblr is filled with references.

#Call of duty black ops zombies five pig series
He allows Dragovich and the Soviet Union to create an underwater base nearby Cuba in order to transmit numbers to release a poison known as Nova 6 across the United States in the event of a Global Conflict. He then turns Mason over to Nikita Dragovich as a "gift" in exhange for Cuba's new relationship with Russia. However, he is captured by Cuban forces and brought before the real Castro, who reveals that he had a double die in his place. The team is apparently successful in assassinating Castro, but as the invasion goes south, they frantically escape, with Mason staying behind to eliminate hostile forces. These rewards in Killstreaks include remote-control explosive cars, guided missiles and controllable attack helicopters, which are a lot of fun.During the Bay of Pigs invasion, Captain Alex Mason was apart of a CIA black ops team called "Operation 40" and was sent in on a covert mission to assassinate Castro behind enemy lines in an operation codenamed "Zapata". Killstreaks are awarded after eliminating an allotted number of enemies. In addition, new custom Killstreaks have been added. Weapons are also customizable with clan tag writing, emblems, attachments, camouflage painting and modified reticules. After unlocking it, players have access to the revamped “Create-a-Class.” This allows greater personalization of appearance as well as upgradeable abilities. It is a system that was established by previous games. In the multiplayer matches, players will earn experience points, which will help unlock new modes of play, weapons, upgrades and more. And then there is competitive online play, which is still some of the most popular gaming today. Zombie mode offers cooperative play, where you can buddy up and fend off waves of walking dead. Combat training mode offers newcomers a way to play online without getting slaughtered by old-time vets. “Black Ops” offers a number of ways to do this. In this mode, players will have the option to play each other competitively online. The main event is the online multiplayer mode, in which many fans will spend months playing. Rather than shooting at someone a foot away, they will take aim at you at a much larger distance. Friendlies will shoot at cover spots or unmanned vehicles, and enemies will sometimes completely ignore your partners. The biggest problem in this mode is some of the worst artificial intelligence I’ve seen. Most players will be able to breeze through it in a couple of days. The single-player mode is longer than the one in “Modern Warfare 2” but still feels short. They are enhanced by great sound effects and an amazing score, which includes some classic rock anthems from the era. Cameos from some well-known historical figures are a bonus.Īs one would expect from the game, the graphics are top-notch. The story is rich and compelling, and has a dynamic end. You’ll get to drive cars and bikes and fly vehicles, as well as shoot your way through some adrenaline-fueled encounters. The single-player campaign mode starts off like a fast-paced action movie. You will go behind enemy lines as a member of an elite special forces unit engaging in covert warfare, classified operations and explosive conflicts across the globe. “Black Ops” takes players back to the 1960s to experience the political climate that shaped the Bay of Pigs and the Vietnam War. “Call of Duty: Black Ops” matches that effort but doesn’t beat it. Rather, the question becomes: How does it stack up to its predecessor? “Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2” set the bar high last year.
