Another beauty day.. started in sunshine but the sun went down quick and so did the temps 🥶 Got to try out my new LED safety vest .. multiple flash modes plus reflective strips. It's pretty bright and effective. First outdoor ride of 2023! 😍😍😍 Finally got the part I needed to fix Carnage! High of 0°C, windchill was -4°C ... a cold north wind was beating on me but the trees provided some respite. Proper clothing and layering sure helps .. plus my battery-heated socks 😁🙃🤣 Feeling the sun on my skin - when it wasn't covered - was so amazing! 😍🥰 I started going thru Heber Down but it was hiker Hell .. so off to Greenwood I went. I find the old, and I mean old, jumps and stunts .. or at least what was left of them. They're very rickety and dangerous .. but maybe they should be rebuilt? 🤔🤫🫣 Along the way, @jamesonthefront flew by me. Well .. that didn't go exactly as planned 🤪🤪🤪 Tonight's ride started off great ... ripping through Heber Down before finding quiet gravel roads in North Ajax and Pickering. It was a grand adventure! I've seen photos of this boat dumped on the side of the road, so I thought I'd go find it. It was only 35km away ... that's nothing. BTW, can Monette Oliphant or her family come collect their garbage before winter comes? Idiots! And Hayden needs to work on his tagging "skillz" 🤪🤣🙃 So while I was taking photos in the boat, the wind knocked Carnage over. I didn't think much of it until I went to ride away and my bike made a funny sound. I looked down and the derailleur hanger had snapped 🤬🤬🤬 It's meant to do that so your rear derailleur doesn't get broken. Only problem is that I don't have a spare hanger on me. Everyone asks me why I carry zip ties... now you know! I attached the derailleur to the frame out of the way and then had to shorten the chain. This meant no shifting and I had to decide what gear to be stuck in. Since the ride was mainly downhill, I went with big ring and tiny cog at the back 😁😁😁 My quads are a little sore but I made it home in great time. Now to get a couple new hangers and new chain. Happy Labour Day Monday ride around @cityofoshawa ... started at the airport and the Sabre jet before zipping down to the lakefront. Not sure who named that poor boat .. "Tufty" is sick an odd name. Second last day of August. I needed 70km to complete my goal of 1,500km for Great Cycle Challenge Canada so I rolled off 40km on Carnage ... down Oshawa Creek Trail, across the WTF Trail to Whitby and then back home. Sunset was stunning! Only Mother Nature can make the train tracks and 401 look better! The wind was whipping up a frenzy on the Lake, but Celina was safe in Port. The sky was mesmerizing all along the WTF but quickly turned dark as I got home. August is the Great Cycle Challenge Canada. I'm riding 1,500km this August and raising money to support SickKids Foundation and cancer research. This is my seventh year supporting GCCC. I now know two children who have or are fighting this terrible disease and one more who lost his fight💔. @greatcyclechallengecanada Ride 6 and Week 1 in the books. Thanks to @teamcolinblog for the invite to join him and @the_bowkinatrix for the inaugural group ride of the newly moved East Scarborough Loop 😁😁😁 In typical @willridesbikes fashion, I didn't drive to the meet up on one of the hottest 🥵🥵 days of the year ... I rode to Scarborough to join in the fun 😁😁😁 We had a great time exploring the best of Scarborough... look at those views from the highest point in Toronto! We found some really cool artwork on the concrete barriers ... got brain freeze at Timmies (check Colin's post) and climbed some really insane gully. Colin shared this really cool stick structure! After 50km of fun in Scarborough, I still had to get home. Did I take the quick and easy way? Oh hell no 🤣🤣🤣 I doubled my distance and a bit for a total of 143km. Why? August is the Great Cycle Challenge Canada and I'm riding 1,500km this August and raising money to support SickKids Foundation and cancer research. I met my weekly goal of 330km so I'm on target. Tonight's adventure brought to you by Carnage! I pointed my @jamisbikes North and East over @cityofoshawa ... it's incredible that we have all this magical scenery so close to home. It was a perfect evening ... started hot and sweaty but the cows didn't seem to mind. I explored some quiet "Unassumed Roads" and found a burned out pickup in the woods. Someone hated that truck 🤣🤣🤣 There was a LOT of sand on some of the roads and still a few bugs. Gave me a nice challenge! I loved seeing the swing .. moving ever so slightly in the gentle breeze. The corn is growing nicely ... can't wait to feast on fresh local corn! Beautiful clouds, lots of sun and an amazing evening nature bathing. First ride after the vacation! Just over 2 weeks off my bikes and I barely noticed it. Legs and lungs felt great .. I guess averaging 12k steps per day on holidays helps 🤣🙃 Took Carnage for a trip down the @cityofoshawa Creek Trail to the harbour .. the pier was pretty quiet but the beach was hopping. It was sticky hot! From there, I fought a headwind to Whitby (whose pier is still closed 🤬🤬🤬) and into Lynde Shores to blast some gravel. Over 50km and I felt great. Another ride full of stunning North Kawartha scenery. I went West this time ... exploring fire roads around Anstruther, Gold and Beaver Lakes. Fresh gravel made some of the roads dicey. After yesterday's rain, everything was saturated and soupy. No KOMs this time around. The water is sooo high ... an entire beach on Anstruther was gone. The fungi seem to like the extra moisture... they've never been so big and colourful before. I could have stayed out all day, but kayaking with my hunny was on the menu for the afternoon. A not-so-quick bit oh-so-scenic tour of North Ajax, Pickering and Whitby on Carnage. Stupid, crazy headwinds over 30km ... idiotic drivers (almost got hit twice at intersections) .. Heber Down full of Walkers and joggers taking up the whole path and getting snotty when I ask to pass (keep right, Karen, keep right) but I finally made it to the blissful peace and solitude of the gravel roads. A Chinook helicopter flew by ... the small waterfall at 3 Rox was flowing mightily ... can you gravel ride without @shimanogravel RX-800 shoes or @reggierider kit? Happy Father's Day to all the great dads, grampas and father figures out there. I spent my day on Carnage ... exploring paved, gravel and unassumed roads plus some rail trail and ATV trails on my way to visit my dad. Had a nice visit before taking the long way home 😁😁 The day started cool... warmed a little... then cooled off again. It was like Spring > Summer > Autumn in one day 🤣🤣🤣 And windy. Crazy wind out of the North ... 30kph gusts and steady 15kph headwind. Ouch! Peterborough has some great riding .. the @rideshimano bike routes are safe and well-travelled by many cyclists. Perfect time to wear my new @fretori kit 😁🥰😍 The fountain in Little Lake was pumping away this trip. And all the recent rain helps the wildflowers bloom! This was the first time I didn't see anyone else on Doube's Trestle Bridge! Eerie! That sunset was worth riding through all the wind tonight! 😍 What a stunner! The sky was full of treats all night .. photogenic clouds ... the @goodyear_blimp!! ... a bright moon! I had it all! I bought a @wolf_tooth_comp B-RAD mount so I could carry my saw and clear a few more trees on 5th the trails. That's about 40 trees (at least 20 good size ones) cleared since that major storm blew through. That @silky_saws Bigboy XL is so damn good! Funniest thing ... I was going up a really steep, long climb when my incident alarm went off.
