Summary: Going to Stanford to see Sam changes things forever.

Somehow Jack convinces you and Sam to stay in on a Saturday night. You have never been the type of person who likes to go out and party, but sometimes you like to go into town and get a drink with the boys. A board game was on the table in front of you. Jack was sitting next to you eating a slice of pizza. Sam was across from you sipping on a beer.

Lifting the bottle of beer to your lips to take a sip and smile at Sam who is rolling the dice.

It’s just the three of you in the bunker tonight. Somehow Dean convinced Cas to go out to the bar with him. You know this means that Dean was probably going to go home with some random girl.

“Any bets Dean isn’t coming home tonight?” You ask joking.

Jack holds back a smile as he rolls the dice.

“Knowing Dean, Cas is probably going to come home alone,” Sam says before taking another drink of his beer.

“You didn’t want to go out with Dean?” you ask Sam who’s hazel eyes are locked on yours.

He stares at you for a long moment, biting his lip. It’s almost as if he doesn’t know what he should say.

“I don’t have a desire to sleep with random women,” he says simply.

Jack looks at you with his eyebrows knit together.

Sam’s simple words suddenly cause a tension between the two of you. It’s the tension that you both were all too familiar with.

THEN

Spring break of your sophomore year of college you decide to fly out to Stanford to see your best friend.

Your flight lands on warm Tuesday afternoon. You only have two days to spend with Sam but you’re beyond excited. With your suitcase hand you walk through the airport looking for your best friend.

You find him holding a sign with your name on it. He’s smiling as you walk towards him. The moment you are close enough he lunges forward pulling your soft body against his tone one. He holds you as if he’s hasn’t seen you in a decade. In all reality he hasn’t seen you in about a year. Since coming to school he stays in California for every break. According to him the only thing for him in Kansas is you, and he doesn’t want to see his dad.

All the money you have been saving up has gone to you buying this plane ticket. You would go completely broke if it means you get to see your best friend.

He hasn’t let go of you as he hugs you gently swaying side to side.

“I missed you so much,” he says with his lips resting on top of your head.

“I missed you too,” you hold on to him almost clinging to him. You can’t imagine ever letting go of him.

You stay there just hugging for a long moment. Slowly he pulls away from you looks down at you smiling.

“How’s school going?” he asks.

“Good I’m finishing up my general classes.”

He pulls away and reaches down to grab the handle of your suitcase. He hands you the sign with your name on it before he reaches for your free hand. Hand in hand he leads you out of the airport. He leads you over to the car he’s recently been driving.

The drive from the airport to Sam’s school isn’t too long. He takes your bag and leads you off to his dorm. He leads you off to his single dorm he has. It’s small but he says it works for him. The last time you spoke he mentioned getting an apartment in the summer and living off campus.

You sit down on the edge of Sam’s bed and smile. He seems so happy to finally have that normal life he’s always wanted.

“You can have my bed, and I’ll take the couch,” he says sitting down on the futon that sits opposite of his bed.

“What’s the plan for the night Sam?” you ask standing up. “Are you going to show me what life is like in California?”

He nods his head and smiles as he stands up.

He takes you on a tour of his campus and then you walk around town together. His arms is thrown over your shoulder holding you close to his strong body. Everything between you seems so perfect.

Walking into Sam’s favorite bookstore he watches you smiling as you search through the shelves of books. According to him you’re never happier than when you nose is buried in a book. He can’t say he’s wrong. You love reading more than anything.

You leave the bookstore and you can’t help but be in love with the beautiful California weather. For lunch Sam decides to take you to a local deli so you both can get sandwiches and you can have a picnic in the park together.

Sitting in the middle of the park you lay on you back staring up at the clouds. He lays down next to you and looks over at you smiling. You suddenly feel like a little kid again, laying in your backyard.

“So much in our lives have changed since we were little,” you say as you run your fingers through the grass.

“Some stuff has changed for the better and others not so much,” he says.

Glancing over at him you know he’s right, a lot of good has happened in your life, but there’s a lot of stuff you both wish you could change.

“So have you dated anyone since I left?” he asks. You can’t lie you had been waiting for him to ask about your dating life since you stepped off the plane.

Glancing back at him you say, “well I went on a few dates with this guy Jonas, but things didn’t play out as planned.”

He gives you a confused look as he knits his eyebrows together, “what does that mean?”

You suddenly feel embarrassed as you say, “so things were going good and we almost did it, and my dad walked in.”

Your cheeks burn bright red thinking about your father walking in on you making out with Jonas in nothing but your underwear.

Sam sits up quickly and looks at you with wide eyes, “excuse me what? Why would you even risk that if you knew your dad was home?”

You cover your eyes wishing you never said anything, “my dad was on a hunt, and he came home early.”

“Did your dad kill this Jonas guy?” Sam asks trying his hardest not to laugh at your completely embarrassing moment.

“No but he stopped seeing me because he was afraid of my dad,” you sigh uncovering your eyes.

“If I ask you something can you promise to not get mad at me?” he asks.

You narrow your eyes at him suddenly nervous for whatever he was going to ask you, “I guess.”

He bites his bottom lip as if he’s still wondering if he should ask whatever he wants to ask you. You grow more nervous by every single second.

“Are you still a virgin?” he asks hesitantly.

Slowly you nod feeling really embarrassed for some reason. There is absolutely no reason why you should feel embarrassed. You know that Sam would never judge you for never having sex.

“Why are you looking at me like you want to crawl in hole?”

“Because it feels so weird that you know this,” you groan as you sit up.

“You don’t need to feel embarrassed about this,” he reaches over and pushes a piece of hair behind your ear.

“Are you still a virgin?” you ask wanting to know.

You aren’t sure how you’ll feel if he tells you someone has touched Sam the way you have only dreamed of touching him.

He shakes his head silently and your stomach drops.

“Oh,” you say softly.

“Did you still want to be?” he asks sounding so unsure.

Silently you stare at him. You biting your bottom lip as you process what he just said to you. You’re fine with being a virgin. You could wait until marriage and it won’t bother you, but if your first time could be with Sam that’s a dream.

“No,” you say barely above a whisper.

“Would it be weird if I offered to help?” he asks with his cheeks flushing a shade of pink.

You shake your head as smile tugs on your lips.

“Did you want it to be me?” he reaches forward and rest his hand on your knee.

“Yes,” you say as you rest your hand on top of his. You want nothing more in the world for your first time to be with Sam.

“I don’t want you to feel like I’m putting you on the spot, you can say no,” he starting to ramble like he’s worried he said something wrong.

“I don’t think you’re putting me on the spot. I would really like for you to be my first,” you smile.

He stares at you for a long moment and butterflies start fluttering in your stomach.

“I’ll make sure it’s enjoyable for you, and I’ll take care of you,” he leans forward and presses his lips to your temple. Closing your eyes you take in the feeling of his gentle lips. You feel so safe with him, and you trust him with your life.

“Okay, I trust you,” you say and he automatically smile.

You spend the rest of the afternoon walking around the city together. He holds your hand keeping you close to him. The day is literally perfect with Sam. You can’t believe you haven’t seen him in so long.

As he takes you back to his dorm you start feeling nervous. You know he’s going to take care of you, and your first time is going to be special. He leans you into his dorm, and you can tell he seems more nervous than normal.

He releases your hand and moves so he’s standing in front of you. You reach up and rest your hand on his cheek you need to let him know that he means the world to you.

“I trust you so much, and I want you to know that I love you.”

“I love you too, and it means so much to me that you trust me,” he reaches up and removed your hand from his face.

You stare at each other for a long moment, and you know that things are going to be different from here on out.

Leaning forward he presses his lips to yours for your first kiss. His touch is electric as his hands gently hold your round face. Your hands are gripping his white t-shirt holding him close to you. You have kissed plenty of boys in the past, but none of them made you feel the way Sam was. Butterflies fluttered around your stomach as he pulls his lips away from yours slowly. A smile tugs at the corners of your mouth as you look up at your best friend.

“I’ve wanted to do that for a while,” he says softly.

Silently you nod your head unsure of what to say. He manages to leave you speechless with a simple kiss.

“I have missed you so much,” he says leaning down and presses his forehead to yours.

“I’ve missed you too.”

“Are you sure you want to do this?” he asks.

You nod and say, “yeah I trust you.”

“That means the world to me,” his thumb gently glides across your bottom lip.

Sam’s your everything, and you trust him with your life. It only seems right that he’ll be your first.

“Come here,” he reaches down and takes your hand leading your towards his bed.

When you made the choice to come to Stanford to see him you never expected for you to lose your virginity to Sam. You love him with all your heart and you would give him anything.

You sit down on the edge of his bed and he stands in front of you. He pulls off his shirt and your eyes automatically travel up and down his tone body. Standing up you reach up and trace his tattoo that is inked on his chest.

His eyes close as he lowers his head. You whisper his name and his hazel eyes open.

“I have one too,” you say stepping away from him.

You got it six months ago when your father requested you did to keep you safe. You reach for the bottom of your shirt and pull it off. You stand in front of him in your bra and feeling very exposed. If anyone else was standing in front of you, you wouldn’t feel comfortable with your round stomach being on display. The thing is that it’s not just anyone standing in front of you, it’s Sam. Your best friend and your everything.

He must sense yours nerves because he reaches forward and touches the ink that’s on your skin below your collarbone. His hazel eyes are on yours as he says, “you’re beautiful.”

Slowly you reach for his belt. Your hands shake slightly as your unbuckle his belt. You feel his eyes on yours as you unbutton his jeans. Pulling your hands away from him you look up at him feeling nervous.

He pushes his pants down his thighs leaving himself only in his boxers. He discards his pants and looks at you and asks, “may I?”

Slowly you nod. You need to be brave, and he’s going to take care of you.

His hands reach for the button on your jeans. As he unbuttons them he drops to your knees in front of you and pushes your jeans down you thick thighs. You’re left on in your bra and panties. You curse yourself for not wearing something a little sexier than your polka dot panties and yellow bra.

He looks up at you and his eyes seem to be filled with wonder. He you feel so safe with him, you weren’t sure why you waited this long for this to happen.

His fingers hooking into your panties and he pulls them gently down your thick thighs. Your eyes are locked on him as you hold your breath. Stepping out of your panties you stand there bare from the waist down only wearing your bra.

“Can I?” he asks looking up at you.

“You don’t have to ask for anything.”

Leaning forward he presses his lips to your mound. Closing your eyes you take in feeling of his lips on your skin. His fingers gently slide through your folds, and it’s not long before you’re putty in his hand. Soon you’re moaning his name and he pushes you over the edge for the first time.

He’s leave you a panting mess. He stands in front of you smiling.

Standing behind you he unclasp your bra and gently pushed the straps down. Standing there completely naked in front of him you want nothing more in the moment then to see his beautiful body on display. He steps in front of you and leans down to press his lips to yours for another soft kiss.

“May I?” you ask with a little smile

He nods and you reach for the band on his boxers. You push them down his thighs and his excitement is on full display for you.

“Are you ready?” he asks.

“Yes,” you step away from him and crawl onto his bed.

He reaches down and grabs his wallet from his jeans pocket. Opening his wallet he pulls out a foil packet he must of been storing in there. He tears the foil packet open and you watch with wide eyes as he slides the rubber down his length.

Slowly he crawls onto the bed so he hovering over you. You know what’s about to happen might be uncomfortable at first.

“Are you sure about this?” he asks.

You nod and say, “I want this.”

“Okay,” he says before slowly sliding into you.

The first sensation you feel is a stinging. You body isn’t used to having something down there. Especially something as big as him. He moved extremely slowly giving you a chance to adjust to his size. He bottoms out and stills completely. He’s hovering over you looking down at you with a worried expression. You know that he’s worried he’s hurting you.

“I’m okay,” you say reaching up and taking his face in your hands.

“You sure,” he says.

Nodding you smile at him. It might be slightly uncomfortable but it isn’t super painful. You knew there was no way Sam could or would ever hurt you. Pulling his face closer to yours you press your lips to his.

Your lips move together. You kiss him as if you’re trying to remind him that you need him. That you don’t actually exist without him. He is the sun and you’re moon, he’s your everything. Everything you’re feeling you’re too afraid to tell him.

“You can move,” you say with your lips ghosting his.

His thrust are slow and gentle. With each slow thrust the discomfort slowly starts disappearing. As you grow closer to the edge you never fully get there, before he comes moaning your name with his lips brushing yours. You’re not even upset you didn’t find your high. What just happened between you was so special. It’s perfect to you.

“I’m sorry you didn’t come,” he says as he holds you close to him.

“It’s my first time I didn’t expect to come.”

You can tell right away he’s worried you didn’t enjoy the whole time.

“Hey,” you reach up and rest your hand on his chest.

He looks up at you with sad eyes.

“That was perfect, you made me come before. I wouldn’t change anything about this.”

NOW

You tell the boys you need another beer. Walking off to the kitchen to get a beer you’re surprised when your phone vibrates. Pulling your phone from your jeans pocket you’re surprised to see a text from your mother. You haven’t talked to her in a couple months. It’s pretty unexpected for her to text you in the first place.

Opening the text you see it reads, “Hey honey I just wanted to let you know Kalen proposed. I’m getting married.”

Her text suddenly brought back a lot of your mixed emotions when it comes to your mother. You haven’t really ever forgiven her from walking away from you and your dad.

After she left you barely ever saw her. As a kid you used to spend one weekend a summer in Minnesota. As a teenager you stopped taking those trips when you turned fifteen.

She’s had little involvement in your life.

The fact that she was going to get remarried left you feeling strange. You weren’t even sure what to say to her. So you just slide your phone back in your pocket and try to act like you didn’t see her message.

Walking back into the library you had Sam a beer and try to act like hadn’t just received a text from your mother.

Sitting down next to him Sam can tell automatically something is up, he’s always been able to read you like an open book.

He reaches over and rest his hand on her knee and gently squeezes it. “Are you okay?” he ask.

You nod lying to him and yourself.

Hunter, Hunter, Demon

Title: Hunter, Hunter, Demon Ship: Taro/Alexys/Cyril [Self Insert/OCs] Word Count: 2010

Summary: Alexys is demon who has, accidentally or not so accidentaly, fallen in love with a couple of demon hunters. Little does she know that the feeling is mutual.

A/N: Another comm for @space-sweetheart !! This one is more lighthearted than the oTHER I PROMISE BUT THEY’RE ALL VERY CUTE

“This wasn’t supposed to happen.”

Alexys paused in her movements about the kitchen of the small hotel room she, Cyril, and Taro had all decided to stop in for the night. Their hunt about the city for a lead on a demonic underground dedicated to selling black market liquid joy to unsuspecting human beings had ended in a cold trail after their lead escaped around a back alley with far too many allure sigils and illusionistic bindings for her to even count let alone warn the two hunters of. Instead she had pulled at the two at her side and forced them to stop, warning with a hiss that they wouldn’t make it. Cyril had gotten angry, of course, claiming that they would. That, with her help, they could do it just fine. When she insisted that she couldn’t unravel all of the sigils at once, Taro was the one to come to her defense, albeit stubbornly, and suggest that they hole up somewhere for the night before other demons caught the scent of their dearest partner in crime.

It led them to the shitty Motel 6 that they were all 3 currently in, the two bedroom area giving away to a small and private foyer right before the bathroom, complete with a barely there doorframe they could slide in place for some semblance of privacy. Of course, what privacy was there between two hunters and a demon? Apparently, Alexys thought with only the slightest hint of bitterness deep in the recesses of her throat, still some. Still enough as the two hunters excused themselves for a private meeting in that hidden foyer, still unaware of how loud they talked as she leaned in slightly to catch the next words that flowed from their lips.

“Things happen, Priest,” Taro’s voice was an easygoing and amused tone, laced with that tangible hint of an accent lingering on the bases of his ‘rs’ and ‘t’s. She found it charming, the way he spoke with those lithe hints. He changed his sentences at times to Japanese, a flawless transformation that could only come with the bilingual abilities of someone raised in a house with two or more languages. The only information she had gotten out of it, though, was that his mother already spoke both just fine and used them in the house. Neither liked to discuss their past with her much. She couldn’t say she blamed them.

Taro continued, though, his laughter that echoed relaxed as she heard the shrug in it, “That shouldn’t be something you’re too surprised about. We lose trails, it happens. We know that the ring is operating within this part of the city and, regardless if we take our time to sleep tonight, they can’t pack up and move all of it out of a certain radius. Demons or no, they possess human forms and human forms are heavy and have lingering effects so-.”

“I’m not talking about the job.”

Cyril’s voice was curt. A sharp sounding thing. It ripped through the conversation like a blade tearing through a flimsy sheet of paper, the noise vaguely unpleasant but necessary to hear as Alexys jumped. She half expected both to come barging out of the area, still mid-conversation, growling and huffing under their breaths at one another as they always seemed to do. Cyril never verbally admitted to liking either Alexys or Taro, but Taro could convince a room full of vampires and demons to find his company enjoyable if he wished to. It was the skill that helped him to survive in the world as long as he did, his phrasing careful and nearly as sharp as his teeth.

Even his words didn’t seem to quell the intensity of Cyril’s tone, however, as she listened in more.

“Oh? Then what, praytell, are you referring to?”

Taro’s tone was easy going still, a lax sort of curiosity lacing against his mouth as she heard him lean against something. Likely the counter of the bathroom, his feet crossing over the ankles as he leaned back and sighed, stretching his neck. He had cracked a bone or two during the run, but it was nothing he couldn’t pop back into place with both of their help. She always worried about the way Taro’s bones popped. He was a bag of rice krispy treats. At her side, the two dogs he kept with him whimpered softly at their owner through the door. She shushed them gently, running her hands over the scalp of one of the rottweilers until it rested its head back down on her lap, licking its lips and staring with her back at the closed door.

“You know what I’m referring to, Taro.”

“Pretend I don’t and refresh my mind. I’d like to hear you say it out loud for once instead of blaming me or God or whoever else you think is up to no good.”

There was a low groan of annoyance, followed by Taro’s delighted laughter.

“Alexys,” Cyril finally admitted in a tone so low that she had to strain to her him, “She wasn’t supposed to happen. She wasn’t supposed to be with us! I… We…”

She felt her heart clench at the implication. Did they find her annoying? Was she just an issue to have around rather than a friend as she had considered herself to be to them? Perhaps it was stupid of her, she realized as her hand raised up to bite at her nails nervously, for thinking that something like her could ever befriend demon hunters like them. What was she possibly doing, being with them? Acting as though she could help them in the case that they were far more qualified to do… The doubts rung themselves sharp in her mind as she tried to push them away, her hair shifting slightly with energy as her emotions slowly grew to hold onto her.

When Cyril’s voice appeared again, a whisper of light against a dark background in the back of her mind, her gaze shot open and her jaw went slack.

“We weren’t supposed to fall in love with her.”

His tone was sad. A soft worry coated his voice in a way she had never heard it before. Taro must have never heard it either. She could hear him shift uncomfortably in his spot and not answer, speechless for the first time since she had ever known him.

“We weren’t supposed to… “ Taro admitted back with a slowness in his voice, as though he was trying not to smile, “But we did, didn’t we? There’s nothing we can do to take that back, Cyril. She… means a lot to you and to me. I’ve seen it in your eyes long before you admitted it.”

“When all of this is over,” Cyril murmured weakly, “She’ll go back to Hell. She’ll return to that life that demons have and forget about us. What’s two humans to a creature who can live for eternity, after all?”

His only response was a sad chuckle from the other hunter as they shifted again in their positions, making Alexys wince.

Unable to take it anymore, she flung herself up from her spot on the bed before she could think about it. The dog resting its head on her lap whined at the lack of contact, but watched curiously as the demoness stomped over to the doorway with purpose and flung the flimsy screen open, all but cracking it in the impact her claws had on the delicate surface.

Cyril and Taro turned to face her, eyes wide and faces clearly startled as they took her in. She looked sweet, less than intimidating in her large t-shirt and shorts, but the horns and the fire in her eyes made up for the otherwise casual wear. They cringed back as they realized the situation at hand. She had heard them talking, their voices less than quiet in the passion of their discussion, and the two shared a single gaze of worry amognst one another. Cyril’s squint against his scarred skin was the only semi-glare he offered to the other man before focusing back forward, lips parting to make is case as best as he could to the demon before him.

He got no words out, however, as she ran up to him. Bracing for impact, he expected to die. He was ready to, in a way. The offense he had created must have been horrible to hear for her, certainly.

So when she hugged him, embracing him close to her body, Cyril was certainly confused.

“You’re idiots,” Alexys laughed weakly through the apparent shakiness of breath she experienced, “Both of you… Thinking that I’d leave you… Thinking that I don’t love you back! Of course I do, Hell, of course I do. I’ve never loved anyone more than I love you stupid, ridiculous little humans.”

Behind her, Taro laughed through his shaky smile, a relieved and relaxed sound that echoed its comfort through the acoustics of the bathroom. Cyril stared, wide blue eyes watching the demon hug him, before his own hands rose up. Unsure at first, they hesitated above her body for a long moment before, ever so slowly, they lowered down onto her. When the embrace was returned, Alexys felt tears well in her eyes. The thick black liquid that served as her body’s source of water was discomforting to say the least, but, she couldn’t care. Not when she was being held like this. Not when it was Cyril who was doing it, as he buried his face in her hair and inhaled, tightening his grip as though she would slip from his fingers at any moment. This was, she was pretty sure, the first time they had hugged at all in their relationship. She smiled into his chest as she kept him in place, turning her head slightly to watch Taro in the corner.

Her eyes were an invitation and he smiled at it, approaching the two before opening his arms wide as well. Cyril glared down at him for a moment.

“Don’t you dare.”

“She invited me!”

“No. Wait your turn.”

“Nahhhhh. Group hug time, Priest~.”

And Taro joined in, his long arms enveloping both the demon and the other hunter as they hugged. A kiss was placed on the back of her head, a careful and sweet thing that made her shiver as Taro nuzzled into her from behind, sandwiching her between the two of them. Normally being between two demon hunters like this would be less than pleasant certainly but… with them? Alexys wished the moment would never end for her.

She looked up, gazing into Cyril’s face, and he watched her. He gazed at her so carefully, so delicately, that for a moment she thought she was an angel. This man, with his ability to give demons release from their confines, had found his way into her heart and she felt it fluttering at the sight of him. Taro’s breath was on her neck as he leaned forward as well, laughing behind her with that mischievous smile on his lips.

“You should kiss him now.”

And she did.

Their lips pressed, gentle and soft and carefully together, in fear that she might hurt him in one way or another with her enthusiasm. Instead, after a moment of tense pause, he returned the kiss. Their lips worked together in the most beautiful of ways, her body becoming hotter than it already was as she pressed herself closer to Cyril’s form. This gave Taro the opportunity to lean forward and kiss her shoulder, sighing into her body as the group held one another in the middle of the cheap motel room bathroom in the middle of the night.

This was it, she realized with a jubilation deep in the center of her stomach. This was the thing she had longed for. The situation she wanted. Between these two men, once her enemies and now something more, she had located the thing she wanted most in her life.

This was home.

Greetings from the land of ten thousand lakes! (I’ve always thought this claim-to-fame was an exaggeration, but after living here for a few days, I can say with honesty that pretty much every resident of Minnesota has an actual lake in their backyard.)

Hannah and I are finally settled into our apartment, so I thought now would be a great time to reflect on The Move to Minnesota.

I’m writing this from our new den. I’m near a window that overlooks our quiet street, watching a light snow fall outside. I have a fire crackling to keep me warm. We don’t have a fireplace, so I made it the old fashion way with a few logs in the middle of the floor (just kidding, landlord!).

Everyone says that moving is one of the most stressful life events, and there were certainly a few moments that fired up the old anxiety (like deciding which soup I wanted at a busy Panera in Ohio), but for the most part, the process was smooth, relaxing, and enjoyable. Much of that ease is owed to Hannah, who was remarkably able to spend the morning of our departure carrying boxes and bags and lamps and shower chairs out to the van, then jam all those items into my van around my wheelchair, then hop in and drive for twelve hours, (stopping only twice to pee!), then unload half the van in the parking lot of the hotel on our first night so I could back my chair out, before finally reloading the van and carrying all of our essentials into the hotel. Hannah did all of this, and lots more the next day, without once becoming cranky or fatigued. Honestly, I don’t know how she did it; I noticed myself getting weary and irritated when the hotel’s room service didn’t have french onion soup, and all I’d done that day was sit back and enjoy the ride!

We also had the luxury of personal moving assistants at both ends of the journey—my parents and brother and his girlfriend in PA, and Hannah’s parents when we arrived in MN. I know there’s nothing more exciting than helping other people move, but I deeply appreciate all the helping hands we had during this transition.

Pulling up to our apartment together for the first time, I was filled with happy anticipation as I absorbed the details of the moment. Hannah holding my hand as she turned off the engine. Our simultaneous exhale after completing such a long journey. The sun shining on our cozy little home. Our new address marked in black numbers above the white-framed front door, and a simple porch light hanging above that. The front lawn was dotted with several trees. It felt like a welcoming place.

In the weeks leading up to the move, so many people warned me about the terrible, horrific, awful cold I was about to experience, but that first afternoon was unseasonably warm—t-shirt weather by my standards. Hannah opened her door and the final unpacking began.

As soon as we were inside and it was officially confirmed that my wheelchair fit in each of the doorways (hooray!), we immediately wanted to dig into all the boxes and begin setting up our new life. This lamp can go over here by the recliner! Look! A perfect drawer for our silverware! Do we have nails? Let’s put this painting above the couch! The TV looks great against this wall.

Our first disagreement revolved around the hanging of my cherished Philadelphia Union soccer scarf. I wanted (needed?) it to be displayed prominently in the dining room, while Hannah passionately believed it belonged in a box in the closet. My favorite joke for dealing with these tussles became “Wow, maybe I shouldn’t have moved.” We compromised on a nice location for the scarf near my desk in the den. After that, we popped down to the supermarket that’s a block away and purchased the makings of our first feast: two rolls of french bread, brie cheese, Go-gurt, and potato salad. I won’t lie, I felt pretty adult carrying the “groceries” back to our apartment.

An interesting detail about our apartment: it’s not wheelchair accessible. There are two steps up to the front landing, and then another step up into the front door. During our hunt for a place to live, I’d been shocked by the lack of accessible apartments and houses that fit our other criteria. Granted, we were searching in a fairly small town outside of Minneapolis, but it was still disheartening to see the all the available options shrink drastically when we selected the “wheelchair accessible” filter. Instead of forking up $3,000 per month for rent, or living in a tent in the woods, we decided to check out a few places that weren’t strictly “accessible,” but which we might be able to modify to fit my needs. This way of thinking was fairly new and scary for me. I’ve always been prone to playing it safe: if a building isn’t accessible, I can’t go there. Looking at houses with steps, and ultimately picking an apartment with three of them, forced me to get outside of my comfort zone, and I’m glad I did.

To make our new apartment easily accessible, I purchased two lightweight, foldable ramps that help me enter and exit our front door. Just like that, a major obstacle was overcome! (I’m grateful to be able to buy adaptive items when I need them. Not everyone can so simply fix accessibility issues in this way, and that’s a huge problem. If you are an apartment owner, and you believe everyone should have equal access to housing, look into what you can do to make your property more accessible, even if it’s just installing a little ramp at the front door.)

Over the next few days, Hannah and I spent every available minute organizing and arranging our home, and the coolest part was that we were finally together. For two long years, our contact was painfully limited to nightly Skype calls and visits when they could be arranged. Living one thousand miles apart just downright sucked most of the time. That was all over now, and it felt like a large weight was lifted from my thoughts and emotions because there was suddenly no more “goodbye” looming in our future. We fell asleep that first night in our new bed, in our new room, listening to new noises in a new neighborhood, and for a split second, the joyful enormity of the move compressed itself down into the quiet sounds of Hannah’s gentle breathing as she drifted off to sleep. It made me smile.

‘Explain to me in greater detail, please, why we are doing this.’ Dorn’s voice carried a note of exasperation under his usual wooden tone as he glanced across the table at his brother.

'Strip-poker is a valuable exercise in reading your opponent’s facial expression to gauge their standing.’ replied Alpharius (or possibly Omegon?) coolly, as he dealt the next round of cards. 'It sharpens many of the necessary skills required to best diplomats and envoys to obtain the most advantageous result. Your pants, Rogal.’

'I still do not understand why we are disrobing. And why we are doing this in my quarters. And why Meli is here.’ Dorn placed his cards face down on the table and efficiently, if stiffly, stripped off his pants.

The biomancer, currently in the form of a primarch-sized woman wearing two thigh-high stockings and nothing else, grinned at him from the opposite side of the table. He studiously avoided looking at her breasts.

'Would “gay” strip poker be less effective than what we are currently doing?’ Dorn edged away from Russ slightly. Russ had lost some time ago, and was naked. Hairy, but naked.

'Depends on wha’ you like!’ said Russ with an even bigger grin than Meli’s. 'I brought Meli along to make it more fun.’ he looked askance at his stoic brother, now clad only in a loincloth and a stony expression. 'Some fun. Ya know. Fun? You should try having some, sometime.’

'I know what fun is, thank you very much. I am just not sure how taking off your clothes in company qualifies.’

’Snrk,’ went Meli, who began to giggle. Russ began to howl with laughter. Alpharius and Omegon merely looked at each other, their expressions schooled to smoothness.

'Please go away, Leman.’ Dorn’s voice was muffled by his hands.

'Ach, fine. I’ll go and find some fun.’ Russ stood up and began to gather his clothes from the floor.

Alpharius and Omegon stood up suddenly. 'Actually,’ said… the one on the left, 'we have to go too. Important intelligence reports are due in soon and we will need to look over them as soon as possible.’ He looked from Meli to Dorn and smiled. 'Perhaps you two can finish together.’

From the corner, hunting for his shirt, Russ barked out another laugh.

The twins gathered up their neatly stacked gloves and belts and filed out, Russ following behind with most of his clothes in his fist.

Dorn looked up from his hands.

'Shall we?’ asked Meli, shifting slightly so that her arms pressed her breasts closer together.

'Must we?’ replied Dorn, his eyes fixed at some point a foot above her head.

'Not if you’ve lost interest,’ she replied back, still grinning at him. 'We could always try figuring out how to have fun whilst naked in company.’ Her grin turned into more of a leer.

'If you are suggesting some sort of further game involving clothing, I do not think I will find it any more useful than this one.’

'I mean maybe we could do something else together.’ She gave him a Look through her lashes. This may have had conveyed some sort of meaning if he hadn’t been staring resolutely into the air above her.

'Well, I have some notes on the newest power armour power-assist system that the artificers are working on, if you would like to look over them and pass along some notes about the bio-interface-’

'Rogal,’ she interrupted him, leaning far forward onto the table, cradling her chin in her hands with an expression of amusement crossed with exasperation on her face, 'What I am completely failing to suggest to you, because I forget that innuendo is not something you are familiar with, is that I would like to have sex with you.’ when his eyes snapped down to her face, she was blushing slightly.

His mind raced. This was completely unexpected, and if he had the right mindset to allow him to expect it, it would have been completely expected. Largely due to the vast number of hints she’d been dropping on him over the last couple of weeks that had rolled off him like lascannon fire off one of his fortifications.

’…Why?’ was the first, and only, thing he could think of to say.

Meli frowned, caught off guard. 'Because I find you very attractive and sex is enjoyable? I mean, if you aren’t interested that’s fine, but that’s how I feel.’

'I have never seen much point, really. Father made us sterile and there are far more productive uses of our time than copulating without producing offspring.’

She lifted her head up and gazed at him lasciviously, her hands still on his hand and forearm. 'Are you interested in continuing?’ she asked softly.

Her now free hand was tracing the shape of the muscles on his back.

Hands. Okay. I should do something with my hands. And my tongue. He slid his hand in a vague circle around her waist and hip. His other hand he brought up to do the same on the other side. He parted his lips slightly, his tongue creeping out to meet hers. As she murmured in approval, he became acutely aware that her entire mostly-naked body was pressed against his mostly-naked body.

When she pulled back from the kiss, her eyes were dark and her face was flushed. She moved across and down, pressing her lips to the side of his neck, below his jaw. Methodically, she began to kiss across his skin, each press of her lips accompanied by a stiff little flick of her tongue. Her movements reminded him of troops searching an area for survivors, and he wondered what she was looking for. Kiss, flick. Kiss, flick. Much, much later, Meli quietly slipped out the door to Rogal Dorn’s quarters, her hair damp from his shower. She was back at human size, mostly because she didn’t have the energy to spare to maintain a larger body at this time. She had thrown back on her dress, which, like her stockings, was made entirely from spanfab - when you routinely shapeshifted from the size of a human to the size of a primarch, your clothes needed to be made out of something that would readily stretch to ten times its original size.

As she walked quietly down the corridor, a voice came from the shadows behind an ornamental pillar.

'Doing the walk of shame, Meli?’

She stopped, and grinned. 'No, Alpharius, my dear,’ she said, without looking around, 'I am doing the stride of pride. The got laid parade. And I owe you one.’ She turned around. 'Each.’

She raised two fists, and got two primarch-sized fistbumps. She strutted off down the hallway.

'Do you think we should tell her?’

'No, she’d be opposed. She has the oddest ideas about the value of a blackmail contingency plan.’

Alpharius and Omegon looked down at the pict-capture on their data slate. Rogal Dorn, his hair in the utmost disarray, his eyes glazed with lust and lips parted, captured at the moment of climax.

Later that day, Leman Russ saw Meli in the halls of the Imperial Palace, on her way to attend to some more difficult healing on injured Astartes. He sniffed the air, and his face split into a predator’s grin. As she approached, he raised one enormous, hairy paw into the air, palm out. What I’ve been playing lately

Hey there, internet, especially the three of you reading this. I’ve wanted to start a game diary for a while now, chronicling my experiences through different video games (and who knows, maybe tabletop games and other stuff too) as I play them. I love using Letterboxd to keep track of what movies I watch when, and as far as I have seen, there’s nothing out there as good for video games. So I started this tumblr instead. Because playing games is a series of unique experiences, more so than with passive media like film and TV, I figured it would be a fun and hopefully worthwhile experience to not just keep track of what games I play, but also how I experienced them.

I’m already in the middle of a few games right now, so I thought to start things off I’d write up a short post detailing what I’ve been playing recently and my thoughts on them.

Let’s start with my most recent playthrough:

The Turing Test (Bulkhead Interactive, 2016, PC version)

This is a game I’ve had my eye on for a while, since it encompasses a lot of things I love - science fiction, puzzles, first-person exploration and environmental storytelling - but I didn’t get around to playing it until a kind user over at the /r/GiftOfGames subreddit sent me a Steam key. (Awesome subreddit, go check it out if you have some spare Humble Bundle keys that need a loving home.)

Overall, I definitely enjoyed the experience - it felt a lot like a cross between Portal and The Talos Principle, with a lot of philosophizing about artificial intelligence and the nature of free will, and the player moving from room to room solving puzzles with laser bridges and balls of electricity and whatnot. The story was pretty much your standard “AI gone rogue, and also it’s in space” plot, albeit with a few clever twists I didn’t see coming. Gameplay was pretty standard first-person puzzle solving a la Portal and the dozens of games it inspired, and while it was fun and challenging, it wasn’t terribly original, and the puzzles started to grate on me after a while. I wanted to get on with the story but had to force myself through the last couple puzzles to make it to the end.

Ultimately, The Turing Test wasn’t really anything we haven’t seen before, but it was still largely very well executed and enjoyable. If this sounds like your kind of thing, I certainly recommend it. Favorite part: all the extra-challenging optional side puzzles that reward you with more story details.

Grow Home (Reflections/Ubisoft, 2015, PC version)

Grow Home is delightful. It’s a gorgeous game with a clean, low-poly art style and some unique platforming gameplay. You play as a robot named B.U.D., who is the best. He makes silly robot noises.

Your goal is to grow this giant plant from one floating island to the next and climb it until you can reach your spaceship. Gameplay consists entirely of walking, jumping, climbing, and (almost always accidentally) falling. To climb, you push the right stick in whatever direction you want to go and alternate pressing the left and right triggers, which lifts and sets down each hand. It can get tedious after a while, but has the advantage of making you really feel like you’re climbing, since it’s an actual gameplay challenge and not a throwaway “hold forward to climb” mechanic. I got Shadow of Mordor for like $4 during the Steam Summer Sale a few weeks ago, hopeful for a worthwhile experience but not expecting much. For the first couple days though, I was pleasantly surprised, and played it pretty much non-stop (or, whenever I could). I liked the Arkham-style combat (I’ve played all the Arkham games and completed Arkham Knight to 100% three times over), the open-world setting, the option to be stealthy, and some of the abilities you gain over time - especially the teleport-to-an-enemy-a-hundred-feet-away ability. That was cool.

After a while, though, everything started to feel the same. It got repetitive pretty quickly, and while the nemesis system was really cool for a while, there wasn’t enough to differentiate each of the Uruks from each other, so it felt like a gimmick more than a real or personal narrative connection. On top of all that, the world of Shadow of Mordor seemed like a duller downgrade of the world I saw in Peter Jackson’s films and read about in The Hobbit, and the revenge-driven plot seemed really out of place for the LOTR mythos - not that I’m an expert or anything, it just felt tonally wrong. Plus, I really didn’t care about Celebrimbor and whoever the protagonist was. I don’t remember his name, all I remember is that he was Troy Baker. And I knew his wife and son for all of three minutes before they were killed off. Not the strongest introduction.

If you love open-world fantasy action games, or Rocksteady’s Batman games, you’ll probably like Shadow of Mordor. If you’re just a huge fan of LOTR, I’d guess that the plot would probably just make you angry, or at least annoyed. If you like hearing the dulcet tones of Troy Baker talking with a British accent to an elf ghost who sounds kinda like Hugo Weaving, you’re in for a real treat.

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild - DLC Pack 1 (Nintendo, 2017, Switch)

After hearing all the great things about Master Mode and the Trial of the Sword, I finally caved and bought the Breath of the Wild Expansion Pass. And the minute I entered Hyrule again with something new to do, I had this feeling of comfort and euphoria - like, “ah, it’s good to be home.” To be back in Hyrule with new goals and challenges ahead, it brought Breath of the Wild back to life in a wonderful way.

So far, I haven’t tried Master Mode, but I have collected every DLC item and cleared the Trial of the Sword (after several tries). The third and final set of trials was far more difficult than the first two, and it was only with a lot of patience and careful resource management that I was able to eventually complete it. (Protip: don’t move on to the next level until you’ve found every useful item in the room. And save your Ancient Arrows for the end. Also: when you get to the white-maned Lynel, that’s not the final level. Not at all.)

The Trial of the Sword was almost more of a test of endurance and strategy than a test of skill. It reminded me a lot of The Challenge caves from The Witness last year - which was my favorite part of that game - in that it was a long, arduous process full of trial-and-error and figuring out new strategies, and which ended with a feeling of utter triumph and joyous pride at my accomplishment. (For the record, The Challenge took me a lot longer and I found it much harder. Still can’t listen to “In The Hall Of The Mountain King” without getting a little anxious.) I’m disappointed that none of the DLC outfits are upgradeable - I really wanted to beat Ganon wearing the Switch t-shirt and Tingle pants - but they’re still nice to have.

If you loved Breath of the Wild and wish there was more to do, the DLC pack is worth it. Plus, there’s still the story DLC pack coming later this year, which you also get if you bought this one. Definitely worth the twenty bucks, if you ask me.

Plus, I’ve got a long list of games that I own but have yet to play, including Ico, Rise of the Tomb Raider, Deus Ex: Mankind Divided, Spec Ops: The Line, Broken Age, L.A. I think I’ve officially lost track of how long we’ve been self-isolating…and for those of us in NY, there seems to be no end in sight. I’m so grateful to have a job that I can do from home, but I’d be lying if I said that this virus outbreak hasn’t altered the scope of my work. While some of you have mentioned that you welcome the distraction of personal style posts & pretty spring fashion, I also realize that we are living in a very different world right now & I want to share content that is both practical & helpful for navigating these circumstances.

So, today’s post is more lifestyle-related & I’m sharing what I’ve been up to lately – including the tastiest meals I’ve made, the workouts I’ve been doing & the best things I’ve purchased since quarantine began. Paleo Fish Tacos This is my Dad’s favorite recipe of all time – he asks for it weekly! I buy the Siete Almond Flour Tortillas and heat them up in a small pan until they get a little crispy (if you’re not GF, you can use whatever brand you prefer). I recommend using slightly less sparkling water than is called for, so the batter is thicker. I serve with homemade guacamole & these chips (also love these for a grain-free option).

Slow Cooker Honey Garlic Chicken There’s nothing easier than a good crockpot meal – just throw everything in, set the timer & forget about it! This is so easy & delicious – I recommend doubling the sauce ingredients so you have extra. I also modify this a bit and use Coconut Aminos instead of soy sauce & this unsweetened ketchup (you can add more honey if you prefer it a bit sweeter). I serve with jasmine and/or cauliflower rice & French green beans.

Crispy Zucchini Fries This obviously isn’t a meal in & of itself, but these are such a tasty side dish! I make them when we have burgers & they get devoured. I use this ranch dressing (if you’re dairy-free, this is a good alternative).

Mexican Pizza This tastes so similar to the Taco Bell version I grew up eating – definitely a more indulgent (and filling!) meal, but so worth it if you have a craving for Mexican food. Her sauce recipe is amazing & I’ve ended up using it for homemade enchiladas too! I double the recipe for our family & use Siete Almond Flour Tortillas for myself and these white corn tortillas for everyone else.

Maple Walnut Crusted Salmon This sounds & looks so fancy, but it couldn’t be more simple. My kids aren’t huge fans of salmon, but they gobble this up. If you don’t have walnuts, you can substitute pecans (I did this last week & it was just as delicious). I serve alongside Japanese sweet potatoes & roasted broccoli.

Black Pepper Chicken This tastes just like Chinese take-out…without the guilt (or MSG)! And don’t worry if you don’t have fish sauce on hand, it’s just as good without it. I serve this with jasmine rice and/or cauliflower rice.

Honey Mustard Sheet Pan Chicken & Brussels Sprouts I love this meal because it’s quick & easy and you only have one pan to wash when you’re done! I recommend cooking the chicken for about 15 minutes before adding the Brussels sprouts (unless yours are very large) – mine were smaller & ended up a little overcooked when I made this the first time. I also double the sauce to have some extra leftover (trust me, it’s so good!).

They have pretty much everything you could want – yoga & pilates, dance, high intensity cardio, low-impact exercises, boxing & barre. There’s a good range of 20-60 minute workouts & most don’t require any equipment (the 60-minute cardio boxing is my current favorite).

Miya waited eagerly, parked in the family's new soccer mom van. It was something Yasmine had teased her about previously--having exchanged her Ninja for something so out of character for her--but they all knew it was nothing but jest. A 2019 Toyota Sienna Le was hardly something she would have considered in her grittier youth, but after having the greatest joy in her life bless her, she wouldn't dare put her life at risk. She wanted to be there for Sokha--and Asha--every step of the way.

And Miya was no goddess--no immortal who could do no wrong. She had more than her fair share of mistakes and regrets, but in spite of everything that happened, the love around her was strong enough to pick her up and lead her back towards the right path. Markus and Kerven were large parts of what held her together in her teens. However the greatest influence on her, unsurprisingly, was her beloved. Asha had been nothing but patient and understanding. It was clear that the two of them wanted to grow, both individually and together; and they did just that. Fast forward to the moment, and they have a loving family, with a first grader that needed to be picked up from class.

It was a typically hot day in Miami--the warm stickiness from the humidity was always something that people were aware of, but those accustomed to it never let it break into a sweat. Even so, Miya kept the AC running as she waited, lightly tapping her fingers along to the songs on the Spotify playlist Asha made for her. She didn't know what kind of day Sokha had, and at the very least she wanted to give them a comfortable space.

A small smile found its way to Miya's face as she reminisced on the days where Asha would do the same for her. On days where they'd both go to the gym, Asha had always insisted on driving so they could both have a nice ride back home, singing along horribly to whichever oldie Asha had playing. And of course, Asha always made sure the AC was on. There was nothing better than being greeted by cold air after a long workout. It was one of the small signs of affection that Asha showed; little details that others would overlook or not even bother with.

So whether or not Sokha knew, it was something Miya had learned and wished to share too.

A sudden ringing pulled Miya's attention from her daydream. She looked out through the windshield and saw children running excitedly to their parents. There was a waiting area out in the front of the school where parents could wait around for their kids, but it was reserved for kindergartners only. Probably to ease their anxieties about having to walk around and find their parents' cars. It was unfortunate that she couldn't wait out front for Sokha, but she understood that too many parents waiting around was a potential fire hazard. Plus, Sokha drew a good amount of enjoyment from searching for where she parked. It was almost like an extra treasure hunt or something, except instead of finding treasure at X marks the spot, it was mom's van.

A distinct pink shirt caught Miya's attention as it walked around the crowd. Sokha's new favorite color was pink, even though it had been red just a few weeks ago. Miya couldn't help but feel a little bit of pride at her child sharing the same taste as her. But of course, children were always absorbing new things and finding different things to enjoy. She remembered when her favorite color shifted a lot as a kid, too. For a good while it depended on which power ranger was the coolest in the season, before she ended up favoring red permanently. She wanted to say the same applied to Sokha, but she knew that they had developed the preference for pink because Asha's carnations had bloomed, and they were amazed at how pretty the flowers were. And...naturally, children wanted anything and everything in their favorite color. So when Sokha asked to go shopping to pick out a few new clothes in pink, how could she and Asha not cave in? They knew they were a little more giving when it came to Sokha's wishes, but Sokha was a miracle that both of them had never dreamed could happen to them. So they spoiled them a bit. Maybe a little more than a bit, but they always taught Sokha to be humble and thankful, so it was alright. Right?

A knock on the passenger's window grabbed Miya's attention and she turned her head to find Sokha peeking through. They were still a little too short to see completely past the door, but they jumped up and down to make sure they could see Mom.

Rolling down the window, Miya called out to them.

"Hey baby, how was your day? And you know you still can't sit in the front," she said with a smile. The back door slowly slid open and she turned around to watch Sokha hop in. Their little sneakers were covered in grass stains since the current PE unit was soccer, and maybe in a different life, she would have minded the stains tracking all over the car. But she loved Sokha much, much more than some car.

"Mom when can I sit in the front?"

Miya paused. She admittedly couldn’t remember when kids were allowed to sit up front. Something about a certain weight? Or was it height? Either way, it wasn’t any time soon. "When you're ten, I think? It's safer in the back for you," she finally got out.

"So it's not safe for you in the back?" they asked, looking up with curious eyes.

"It is! I can't stay back there and drive, though," Miya laughed.

"Mom when can I drive?"

Miya tapped her chin in thought. "Maybe when you're sixteen? It depends."

"So that means you're sixteen?" Sokha asked.

Sokha was so innocent and cute, Miya could never get upset with their curious little questions. "I used to be sixteen, Khakou."

Sokha gasped in amazement at the remark, their mouth forming a little circle as they moved to buckle themselves up in their car seat.

"Cool..." they finally settled on.

And with that, they made their way home.

Having pulled into the driveway, both Miya and Sokha saw Asha's car already parked. After the initial wonder at their Mom being older than sixteen, Sokha dozed off into a little nap, tired from their adventures at school.

But as soon as the engine shut off Sokha woke up. Seeing Asha’s car parked out front, the excitement of Mama being home early was enough to pull them from their post nap haze. They quickly unbuckled their seat belt and waited for Mom to open the door for them (child safety lock being on and all), before dashing for the front door and repeatedly ringing the doorbell, leaving behind their backpack next to their car seat.

A warm figure opened the door soon after, her aura radiating love and kindness, and even though Miya was still locking the car and putting up the sunshades, just the sight of her made her heart flutter.

"Mama!!!" Sokha shouted, before being scooped up into Asha's arms. A quick kiss was planted on their forehead as Asha hoisted them up onto her waist.

"How was my little baby's day?" she asked, voice calming Sokha's nerves immediately.

Sokha was all giggles and laughs. "It was gooood," they drawled out, the way kids do when they're trying to think while the words are already coming out.

"What was so good about it?" Asha asked sweetly, freeing an arm to blow a kiss towards her wife. She was always intent on making sure Sokha truly talked to them. As a therapist she saw the importance of communication and how early problems can carry over. So she wanted to ensure that their child felt nothing but comfortable when talking to them, and that Sokha didn't feel like a burden when sharing their feelings.

"Like, today we learned about dinosaurs, and the T-Rex was...the KING of dinosaurs," Sokha smiled.

Miya walked up to the pair, Sokha's backpack in hand, and gave each of them a kiss--Sokha on the cheek and Asha on the lips. "What makes the T-Rex the king?" she asked.

"Well," Sokha started, "it was big and strong, and it ate other dinosaurs with its big teeth." They pulled their lips back to show their own teeth, a few having fallen out, leaving gaps and giving Sokha that iconic little kid smile.

Asha stepped aside to let her wife in and closed the door behind her. "You have big teeth too, Sokha. Are you going to eat other dinosaurs and be a king?"

Miya made sure the door was locked before following Asha and Sokha to the family room. Sokha was still clinging to Asha, even though they were six now. Not that it mattered. They both knew of parents that refused to hold their children because they'd reached a certain age. The worst part was that it was out of shame. To feel ashamed to hold your own kid, because they were "supposed to grow up." How ridiculous. The way the two of them saw it, they'd hold Sokha as long as they had the strength to, no matter Sokha's age. Weening children from something like physical touch and affection all because of societal shame seemed so wrong.

Sokha thought Asha's question over, not entirely sure what they really wanted. "No..." they finally got out. "I don't want to be mean."

"Even if it means being king?" Miya asked.

"Yeahhhh," Sokha said, resting their head against Asha's collar.

Asha smiled at their child's sincerity. She knew Sokha was humble in nature, but it was good to see that she and Miya's careful parenting seemed to affect Sokha positively. They didn't want to raise their child to strive to rise above others. A lot of parents only wanted the best for their children, but they raised them with the wrong ideals--to want to rise to the top and be respected through power or riches, instead of for their character.

"Well that's good," Asha chimed in, bringing a hand to lightly pinch at Sokha's cheek. They still had their baby fat and it was simply irresistible to not poke and prod at their cute little cheeks. "What good is a king if he's mean?"

"Yeah!!" Sokha yelled suddenly.

It made Miya laugh lightly to herself as she set Sokha's backpack down. The warmth and love that radiated off of Sokha was so much different than what she felt during her childhood. It was nice. More than that, it was...incredible. Her own childhood was so opposite of Sokha's, and when she and Asha first talked about starting a family, she knew she'd do everything in her power to give their child the childhood they deserved. Nothing but unconditional love and understanding...it was all she ever wanted, and now she had it, and gave it. To see such a healthy family, and to know that it was because of her and Asha's efforts was simply indescribable.

A sudden soft feeling against Miya's hand startled her and brought her out of her little daydream. She looked down to see Paka, the family's cat dog, walk by and move to meet Sokha; her tail swishing slightly in excitement. Paka wasn't really a cat dog, but she might as well have been. Savannah cats were large and had the tendency to follow their owners around the house, instead of the usual aloofness that was attributed to cats. Despite Paka's dog-like personality, she was still nervous around strangers, and would walk away to her own little corner if someone new was around.

"Paka!" Sokha shouted, squirming a little to let Asha know they wanted to be put down. Asha bent down and let Sokha run over to their expensive, unusual pet. Paka rubbed her head against Sokha's legs affectionately, and Sokha busied themselves with petting her in return.

"How was work?" Miya asked, taking her place by Asha's side.

Asha smiled and leaned in for a gentle kiss, her hand resting on her wife's hip. "It was alright, not much new. One of my patients recently reconciled with their sibling and their mood improved drastically. So we had a nice session."

Even though they were almost a decade into their relationship together, every bit of affection and contact from Asha made her heart skip a beat. "Was that the one that was too stubborn to initially talk to them when you suggested it?"

"Yeah, but I don't hold anything against my patients. I understand how it's a situation I've never encountered, so I can't force them to do something they don't want to. I only give suggestions. They tend to open up after awhile and it's a very rewarding experience." Asha smiled, reaching for Miya's hand and bringing her knuckles to her lips. "Like a certain someone I know."

Miya couldn't help but grin at Asha's words. "It takes a certain kind of person to be able to listen so everyone else's problems. Just listening is such a hard thing for people to do, and you do it AND give advice to help them through it."

"I have my talents," Asha laughed. "But how was your day? Any trouble getting Sokha up in the morning?"

"Nah, they didn't give me any trouble. They sure were sleepy; we told them yesterday that staying up late to watch another episode of whatever it was they were watching would be bad. I still don't think they believe us though," she smiled. Miya was mostly a stay at home mom. She worked part time to supplement Asha's majority income; Muay Thai teacher from 6PM to 10PM, stay at home Mom the rest of the day. They didn’t really need the extra money, but Muay Thai was still a passion of hers. So if she couldn’t perform at a professional level herself, then why not share her skills with others? But even then, it wasn’t enough to make her truly consider a full time career as a coach. Their main priority was to ensure that one of them would always be with Sokha, so they wouldn't grow up lonely. And with Asha bringing in the big bucks, they could easily fit that schedule.

"Well maybe one day they'll learn. Or maybe one day we'll be stricter on them." Asha's thumb brushed across the back of Miya's hand one last time before she let go. "Sokha said they wanted to make their lunch tomorrow with us. Want to join?"

Miya looked over to the family room, where Sokha was still petting Paka; only now, Potato rolled over to join them.

"Sure. Did they ask for anything in particular?"

"No, not really," Asha paused. "Other than a bag of chips, they said they just wanted to watch us make their lunch."

Miya raised a brow. "They just wanna watch us?"

"Mhm. You've been out late recently with all the students asking you for advice after class, and Sokha misses watching you make lunch for them, cause you do it in the morning while they're getting ready." A small smile reached Asha's lips at just how much affection Sokha needed, and how they were so comfortable in talking about what was bugging them. "Our baby misses you, Miya, even when you're here most of the day."

A slight tremble found its way to Miya's lips at the thought of her slight absence affecting Sokha so much. "Well, what if we make an early dinner today with them too? I didn't mean to neglect them..."

"I know you didn't. You didn't know it was affecting them. I'm sure they'll appreciate being able to help out in the kitchen too."

The two of them looked over to Sokha again, their little kid playing so happily with Potato and Paka. Sokha was so full of love. And they'd do everything to cultivate that and let them grow to be a kind person.

"What do you see, Asha," her voice dropped to a whisper, "when you look at Sokha. What does it make you think?"

Asha's eyes followed Sokha, their little hands switching between gently petting Paka and patting Potato's rump. "I see...a child filled with love, and everything along the way that led to this."

Miya turned her gaze to Asha.

"I see," Asha continued, "the first time I saw you at the gym, the first time I considered a romance with you. I see the first time we went on a date, the first time we moved in together. I see the day you suffered a broken leg and the aftermath of it. I see the pain and loneliness we both felt, but even then, I still see the day you proposed to me, along with the day we both said I do. And I see the day we both sat down and talked about the possibility of a family."

Asha paused. "When they smile, their eyes lift up the same way yours do. And when they laugh, their nostrils flare a little the way mine do. Their lips are so full and plump, like yours--"

"Yours are the same, you can't give me all the credit," Miya smiled.

"Patience Miya." Asha's own smile shone as she playfully slapped her wife's arm. "Their lips are full like yours, and their hair is thick like mine. They have my beauty mark, and a mix of both of our skins. When I see Sokha, I see everything we've been through, and the love we have; how it all turned into another soul, already so full of love and kindness. It's a miracle, and it's a privilege, to have had Sokha. And I wouldn't have liked to share the experience with anybody else," Asha stopped to turn to Miya, "than with you."

Sokha took that exact moment to turn around to look at the two of them.

"Mom why are you crying?" they asked worriedly.

Miya couldn't help but smile at both Sokha's sincerity and Asha's soul baring words. She didn't bother wiping away at the tears welling up in her eyes, because she found no shame in crying--especially not when they were tears of joy.

"Mama just said something really sweet to me, Sokha. And I love you so much, it...made me cry," Miya reasoned.

"But don't you only cry when you're sad?" Sokha asked.

"Not always. Sometimes when you feel so good, you don't know what else to do but cry. And that's okay." A little sniffle made Miya pause, but she continued, trying to find a way to explain it to Sokha. "Have you ever laughed so hard your eyes watered, Khakou?"

Asha smiled at the interaction. The two of them always tried their best to explain things in terms Sokha would understand, and she felt as though Miya would nail this explanation too.

"Yeah one time, when Paka was carrying Potato by right here," Sokha moved over to point at Potato's scruff, "Potato farted and it scared Paka and Paka, she jumped and ran away. But it was, was like Potato's fault and she still holded onto Potato."

Asha herself couldn't help but laugh at the retelling. Sokha had a bad habit of slipping people food out for Potato and it resulted in a more active...gastrointestinal tract. They both lectured Sokha on why they couldn't give Potato their food all the time, and it seemed to have gotten through after they explained that Sokha wouldn't eat Potato's kibble, so Potato shouldn't eat their food. Plus, Potato was on a strict diet since she couldn't move very much. They didn't want to give her even more health problems.

Miya let out a little huff of air at Sokha's memory. She was there when it happened. Watching Paka run around fearfully with Potato in her mouth, while Potato seemed to be having the time of her life, was very amusing.

"Well it's like that," Miya started. "I was just so happy, I couldn't help but cry."

Sokha stood up and walked over to the two of them, their little arms wrapping around one of each of their legs in an attempt to hug them both. "I wanna be so happy I cry too." They looked up at their parents with a smile.

Asha and Miya simultaneously cooed at their child's display of affection.

"Here, why don't we all do something together then?" Miya asked, picking Sokha up and letting them rest on her hip. "Mama told me you missed me. You don't have to be shy; you can tell me whenever anything is bugging you, Khakou."

"I know but...I keep forgetting and I'm too sleepy to wake up in the morning," they frowned.

"And that's why Mama had to come to the rescue," Asha chimed in with a smile. She patted Sokha's back. "But remember, you never have to hide anything from us, okay Khakou? If anything is bothering you, you can tell us. Promise?"

Sokha looked at Asha curiously, as if she'd somehow lie about something so important. "Can we make it a piiiiinky promise?" They held their pinky out and stuck their hand out towards Asha.

Asha quickly stuck her own pinky out and wrapped it around Sokha's. "It's a pinky promise," she smiled.

Miya followed the same gesture. "Now, what do you want to make for dinner, Sokha? We'll make your lunch afterwards when we're done eating."

Sokha's eyes lit up at the freedom to pick whatever they wanted for dinner. "I want...dinosaur meat."

Miya blinked in surprise. "Dinosaur meat?"

"Yeah!!! Like," Sokha paused and squirmed a bit before Miya let them down. When they were free they ran to get a piece of paper from their backpack, and returned with some crayons. They went over to the dining table and climbed atop a chair; their crayon quickly scribbling and sketching a little drawing of what seemed like a chunk of meat with a bone through it. "Like this!" Sokha finally finished.

Asha and Miya looked the drawing over, both unsure of what kind of meat would ever look like that. The closest thing Asha could envision was maybe fried chicken? Maybe a drumstick or two for Sokha while she and Miya had the wings or thighs. They never bothered buying chicken breast anymore.

"I don't think--" Miya started, only to be lovingly interrupted by Asha.

"I think we can make it no problem. Do you want to help, Sokha? You can pretend like you're a T. rex," Asha said.

"YEAHH!!" Sokha screamed, standing a little on the chair cause they were so excited.

Miya looked over at Asha with a little confusion. Her voice was just above a hush as she spoke to Asha. "Asha how are we gonna make it?"

Asha smiled as she watched Sokha run and grab Potato and tell her about how they were gonna have dinosaur meat for dinner. "We still have drumsticks right?"

"Yeah, we do. OHH I gotcha," Miya grinned. "Fried, right?"

"Mhm," Asha replied.

"Well let's get everything out then. Do you wanna prep and I batter and fry, or which would you prefer?" Miya had no preference for either, but she wanted to make sure Asha didn't work too hard considering she had already worked the entire day.

Asha tapped her finger against her chin. "Why don't you batter and fry? Sokha would probably want to help with that, and they're doing this cause they miss you, after all."

Miya smiled at that. "I'm getting showered with a lot of attention. You gotta step your game up if you wanna get that mom of the year mug," she laughed.

Asha feigned a gasp. "That's unfair; Sokha sees less of you since they're at school all day. That's why they miss you, Mom of the year runner up," Asha grinned.

It was Miya's turn to gasp as she imagined a cup with ‘world's #2 Mom’ or something along those lines on it. Their playful back and forth would have continued a little longer had it not been for Sokha running up with Potato.

"Mom!! Mama!! Can Potato watch us make the dinosaur meat? I told her she could...even though I didn't ask," they looked towards the ground dejectedly.

Asha raised a brow at the idea of putting a dog up on the counter while preparing food. It wasn't a thought she'd entertain, but she didn't have to hand the news to Sokha rudely. "Aw baby, we can't put Potato on the counter. She has a lot of germs rolling around on the ground all day and we don't want them getting in our food. I'm sure she'd be happy to play with Paka in the meantime," Asha smiled apologetically, rubbing Sokha's back.

"Okay!" Sokha smiled, their mood taking no hit at all. It seemed they were more guilty about committing to something before asking. They went to the living room couch and gently placed Potato on a pillow, leaving her be with a little kiss on her head. Her tail started wagging, and, unfortunately her wiggles made her lose her balance and slide off the pillow. But she didn't seem to mind; her tail still thumped against the couch all the same.

Sokha ran back up to their parents, their hands outstretched, gesturing for someone to pick them up. "I wanna sit on mom's shoulders."

Miya happily obliged, bending down to pick them up and hoisting Sokha up behind her neck. "Hold on tight, okay?" she asked, holding onto Sokha's knees just to add more security.

Asha looked at the two of them with a smile, before opening the fridge and looking around for the ingredients they'd need to make dinner.

Their home was so happy--so full of love and warmth and security. It was something that took time to cultivate; all of it starting with her and Miya's relationship, but it was something she'd relive over and over again if she could. All the hardships and good times led to smiles and unending affection. It was something that she knew didn't happen magically; love had to be nurtured and tended to, or else it would shrivel and wither away. It was a lesson Miya knew all too well, but, Miya was no longer a Srey. The Sarrs loved differently, and she'd ensure they all worked towards creating a home filled with unconditional love.
